Development of dispersive micro-solid phase extraction based on micro and nano sorbents

Nickel-manganese-cobalt tetragonal spinel ternary oxide nanocomposite as an effective adsorbent for dispersive solid phase micro-extraction of cadmium in food and water samples

Nickel-manganese-cobalt tetragonal spinel ternary oxide nanocomposite (NMC-TSO) was synthesized. It was utilized as an efficient sorbent for the dispersive solid phase microextraction (D-SPμE) without vortexing of cadmium. The analysis of the cadmium was carried out by FAAS. The effective analytical parameters including pH (6) contact times (no vortexing), sample volume (70 mL), eluent volume (3 mL of 2 mol L-1 HCl), linear dynamic ranges (1.07-85.7 μg L-1), and re-useability (33) on the D-SPμE efficiency were investigated. The PF, RSD% and LOD of the D-SPμE for cadmium were 23.3, ≤ 2.8% and 0.49 μg L-1, respectively. The tolerable concentrations of Ca2+, Mg2+, K+ and Na+ on Cd(II) were 50,000 mg L-1, 50,000 mg L-1, 25,000 mg L-1 and 7500 mg L-1, respectively. The method was accurated by analysis of food and water certificate reference materials (NW-TMDA-54.6 Lake water, SPS-WW1 121 Batch wastewater, 1573a Tomato Leaves and TORT-3 Lobster Hepatopancreas) and - recovery experiments. The D-SPμE-FAAS method was applied for the cadmium determination in dam water, wastewater, river water, well water, sea water, tea, cacao, nut, bitter chocolate, rice, leek, cinnamon and parsley.

Quantification of trace heavy metals in environmental water, soil and atmospheric particulates with their bioaccessibility analysis

In this work, sulfhydryl (SH) functionalized magnetic covalent organic framework (COF) was synthesized by using 4-aldehyde phenyl butadiyne (DEBD) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as the monomers and ethanedithiol as the modifier, with the aid of thiol-alkyne "click" reaction. The prepared Fe3O4@COFTAPB-DEBD@SH exhibited relatively strong magnetism (32.8 emu g-1), good stability and selectivity to target analytes with a high sulfhydryl content (0.24 mmol g-1). Based on Fe3O4@COFTAPB-DEBD@SH, a method combining magnetic solid phase extraction with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed for the quantitative analysis of trace metals. Under the optimal conditions, the method merited fast desorption kinetics (<2 min), adsorption kinetics (<20 min), fast phase separation (<1 min), high enrichment factor (100), and the detection limits for Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi were determined to be 1.18, 0.51, 4.91 and 0.39 ng L-1, respectively. A good resistance to complex matrices was demonstrated for the method in the analysis of soil, atmospheric particles and simulated pulmonary fluids samples. Certified reference materials (coal fly ash GBW08401 and soil GBW07427) were employed to validate the accuracy of the method. Four target metals in the range of 12.9-215 ng L-1, 0.06-24.6 μg g-1 and 0.52-33.1 ng m-3 were found in local water, soil and atmospheric particulates (PM), respectively. Additionally, artificial lysosome solution and gamble's solution were used to simulate human pulmonary fluid and the bioaccessibility of Cd, Hg, Pb and Bi in PM2.5 was evaluated to be 58.6-73.1 % and 1.3-7.1 %, respectively.

The magnetic layered double hydroxide/zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 nanocomposite coupled with HPLC-MS/MS for the detection of heterocyclic aromatic amines in thermally processed meat

In this research, a novel magnetic nanocomposite (Fe3O4@Zn/Al-LABSA-LDH/ZIF-8) was synthesized using Fe3O4 as the magnetic core, layered double hydroxide (LDH) with linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (LABSA) intercalation and zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) as the shell. Benefiting from the intercalation of LABSA into LDH combined with ZIF-8, the multiple interactions, including π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interactions, conferred high selectivity and good extraction capability to the material towards heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs). Fe3O4@Zn/Al-LABSA-LDH@ZIF-8 was used as an adsorbent for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) to enrich HAAs in thermally processed meat samples, followed by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) detection. The method exhibited a low detection limit (0.021-0.221 ng/g), good linearity (R2 ≥ 0.9999), high precision (RSD < 7.2 %), and satisfactory sample recovery (89.7 % -107.5 %). This research provides a promising approach for developing novel adsorbents in sample preparation and improving analytical performance.

Nitrophenols in the environment: An update on pretreatment and analysis techniques since 2017

Nitrophenols, a versatile intermediate, have been widely used in leather, medicine, chemical synthesis, and other fields. Because these components are widely applied, they can enter the environment through various routes, leading to many hazards and toxicities. There has been a recent surge in the development of simple, rapid, environmentally friendly, and effective techniques for determining these environmental pollutants. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the latest research progress on the pretreatment and analysis methods of nitrophenols since 2017, with a focus on environmental samples. Pretreatment methods include liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, dispersive extraction, and microextraction methods. Analysis methods mainly include liquid chromatography-based methods, gas chromatography-based methods, supercritical fluid chromatography. In addition, this review also discusses and compares the advantages/disadvantages and development prospects of different pretreatment and analysis methods to provide a reference for further research.

Unravelling the potential of magnetic nanoparticles: a comprehensive review of design and applications in analytical chemistry

The study of nanoparticles has emerged as a prominent research field, offering a wide range of applications across various disciplines. With their unique physical and chemical properties within the size range of 1-100 nm, nanoparticles have garnered significant attention. Among them, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) exemplify promising super-magnetic characteristics, especially in the 10-20 nm size range, making them ideal for swift responses to applied magnetic fields. In this comprehensive review, we focus on MNPs suitable for analytical purposes. We investigate and classify them based on their analytical applications, synthesis routes, and overall utility, providing a detailed literature summary. By exploring a diverse range of MNPs, this review offers valuable insights into their potential application in various analytical scenarios.

An overview of preconcentration techniques combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry for trace element determination in biological studies

In the last decades, the determination of trace elements in biological materials has emerged as an important area of study because of its relevance to human health and the environment. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) has proven to be a powerful tool for trace element analysis, owing to its high sensitivity and ability to determine several elements in a single measurement. However, given the complex nature of biological matrices and the presence of elements, most of them at ultratrace levels, it becomes crucial to complement ICP-MS with preconcentration techniques to increase the sensitivity and selectivity of analytical methods. This article presents an exhaustive overview of liquid- and solid-phase preconcentration techniques used in combination with ICP-MS for trace element determination in different biological samples from 2000 to the present. An in-depth discussion of the advances on the application of state-of-the-art solvents and materials in trace element extraction and preconcentration is presented. Special attention is given to different strategies for elemental speciation analysis, employing both chromatographic and non-chromatographic techniques. The role of automation in these methodologies is also described. Finally, future trends and challenges related to this topic are discussed.

Pretreatment and analysis techniques development of TKIs in biological samples for pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have emerged as the first-line small molecule drugs in many cancer therapies, exerting their effects by impeding aberrant cell growth and proliferation through the modulation of tyrosine kinase-mediated signaling pathways. However, there exists a substantial inter-individual variability in the concentrations of certain TKIs and their metabolites, which may render patients with compromised immune function susceptible to diverse infections despite receiving theoretically efficacious anticancer treatments, alongside other potential side effects or adverse reactions. Therefore, an urgent need exists for an up-to-date review concerning the biological matrices relevant to bioanalysis and the sampling methods, clinical pharmacokinetics, and therapeutic drug monitoring of different TKIs. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the advancements in pretreatment methods, such as protein precipitation (PPT), liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), solid-phase extraction (SPE), micro-SPE (μ-SPE), magnetic SPE (MSPE), and vortex-assisted dispersive SPE (VA-DSPE) achieved since 2017. It also highlights the latest analysis techniques such as newly developed high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) methods, capillary electrophoresis (CE), gas chromatography (GC), supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) procedures, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays as well as novel nanoprobes-based biosensing techniques. In addition, a comparison is made between the advantages and disadvantages of different approaches while presenting critical challenges and prospects in pharmacokinetic studies and therapeutic drug monitoring.

Analysis and remediation of phthalates in aquatic matrices: current perspectives

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are high production volume chemicals used extensively as plasticizers, to increase the flexibility of the main polymer. They are reported to leach into their surroundings from plastic products and are now a ubiquitous environmental contaminant. Phthalate levels have been determined in several environmental matrices, especially in water. These levels serve as an indicator of plasticizer abuse and plastic pollution, and also serve as a route of exposure to different species including humans. Reports published on effects of different PAEs on experimental models demonstrate their carcinogenic, teratogenic, reproductive, and endocrine disruptive effects. Therefore, regular monitoring and remediation of environmental water samples is essential to ascertain their hazard quotient and daily exposure levels. This review summarises the extraction and detection techniques available for phthalate analysis in water samples such as chromatography, biosensors, immunoassays, and spectroscopy. Current remediation strategies for phthalate removal such as adsorption, advanced oxidation, and microbial degradation have also been highlighted.

Synergy of iron-natural phenolic microparticles and hydrophobic ionic liquid for enrichment of tetracycline residues in honey prior to HPLC-UV detection

Iron-natural phenolic microparticles were developed as absorbents for dispersive micro solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) synergistic with hydrophobic ionic liquid (IL) for dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) to enrich tetracycline residues, including tetracycline, doxycycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline. In situ iron microparticles synthesized from betel nut natural reagent were employed as an adsorbent for D-μSPE. The hydrophobic IL [Hmim][PF6] was synergistically utilized as an extraction solvent to extract and accumulate adsorbents bound with tetracyclines before quantitation by HPLC-UV. The synergistic combination of DLLME with D-μSPE provided excellent extraction recovery compared with individual extraction. The developed method was successfully applied to enrich and determine tetracycline residues in honey samples, with recoveries ranging from 80.0 to 121.5% and providing high enrichment factors ranging from 61 to 197. This alternative method is simple and rapid, with high extraction efficiency and a high enrichment factor and is also environmentally friendly for the analysis of tetracyclines.

Deep eutectic solvent-based ferrofluid for vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from environmental waters

A novel ferrofluid of Fe3O4 nanoparticles and a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of menthol and pentanoic acid was introduced as a green microextraction medium. The ferrofluid was successfully used as an extractant for vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction (VALLME) of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in environmental waters prior to their determination by HPLC-DAD. Once the ferrofluid was dispersed in the sample by vortex agitation, phase separation could be easily achieved by placing a neodymium magnet next to the tube, which eliminated the centrifugation step and simplified the operational procedure. As a result, the sample pretreatment took only ≈2 min. The experimental parameters, including pH, nanoparticle amount, ferrofluid volume, vortex time, salt amount, and disruptive solvent type and its volume, were optimized stepwise. The method showed linear behavior for all NSAIDs from 5 to 100 μg/L, with limit of detection values and enrichment factors in the ranges of 1.68-2.05 μg/L and 38.9-50.6, respectively. Intra- and Inter-day accuracies obtained from the analysis of spiked river, lake, and tap water samples at low and high-quality control levels (20 and 80 μg/L) ranged from 90.3% to 108.0%, with relative standard deviations less than <12.3%. The results of this study demonstrate that the use of DES-based ferrofluid in VALLME can be considered a simple, environmentally friendly, and reliable alternative for the determination of NSAIDs in environmental waters.

Mycotoxins-Imprinted Polymers: A State-of-the-Art Review

Mycotoxins are toxic metabolites of molds which can contaminate food and beverages. Because of their acute and chronic toxicity, they can have harmful effects when ingested or inhaled, posing severe risks to human health. Contemporary analytical methods have the sensitivity required for contamination detection and quantification, but the direct application of these methods on real samples is not straightforward because of matrix complexity, and clean-up and preconcentration steps are needed, more and more requiring the application of highly selective solid-phase extraction materials. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors mimicking the natural antibodies that are increasingly being used as a solid phase in extraction methods where selectivity towards target analytes is mandatory. In this review, the state-of-the-art about molecularly imprinted polymers as solid-phase extraction materials in mycotoxin contamination analysis will be discussed, with particular attention paid to the use of mimic molecules in the synthesis of mycotoxin-imprinted materials, to the application of these materials to food real samples, and to the development of advanced extraction methods involving molecular imprinting technology.

Magnetic solid phase extraction coupled to HPLC-UV for highly sensitive analysis of mono-hydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine

BACKGROUND

As a common pollutant, the carcinogenic properties of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have garnered considerable attention. Trace metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be detected in urine as a non-invasively approach to monitor the exposure level. Nonetheless, the urine samples have the disadvantages of being large in volume and containing numerous impurities. Given the growing demand to study metabolites with low abundance and potential biomarkers, there is a pressing need for a preconcentration and high-throughput technique for effectively handling complex liquid samples.

RESULTS

Polystyrene-coated magnetic nanoparticles were used to establish a novel magnetic extraction method for monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urine samples. Polystyrene magnetic nanoparticles are an ideal absorbent for solid-phase extraction. After the material was mixed with the sample and adsorbed the target analyte, the analytes on the material were eluted and quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography. Influencing factors were optimized, and the proposed method achieved desirable sensitivity in analyzing low-abundance metabolites in large volumes of complex urine samples. The recoveries of intra-day and inter-day were 78.0-118.0 % and 81.0 %-115.0 %, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day reproducibility were less than 4.5 % and 8.6 %, respectively. The limits of detection were in the range of 0.009-0.041 ng mL-1, and the limits of quantification were in the range of 0.030-0.135 ng mL-1.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

The application of reusable polystyrene-coated magnetic solid-phase nanoparticles as adsorbents makes the extraction of monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from urine samples economical and environmentally benign. The proposed method is simple, sensitive, and efficient compared to existing techniques. The nanoparticles are easy to prepare, showing potential for rapid screening of complex bulk bio-samples in batches with high efficiency and low budget.

Selective and fast magnetic dispersive solid phase micro-extraction of copper and lead in water and vegetables after synthesis of magnetic mesoporous carbon

Magnetic mesoporous carbon (Fe3O4@C, MMC) was synthesized and characterized. It was used for the first time as a sorbent for the magnetic dispersive solid phase microextraction (M-dSPμE) of copper and lead in water and vegetables. FAAS was used to determine the analyte concentrations after elution. The MMC was found to be have surface area of 145.9 m2 g-1 and average pore diameter of 15 nm. The analytical parameters affecting M-dSPμE of copper and lead were optimized. They were pH of sample, 6; eluent, 2 mol L-1 HCl (3 mL); and sample volume, 250 mL. The MMC reaches equilibrium very fast without vortexing for adsorption and only 5 s for elution. The LOD and PF of the M-dSPμE method for copper and lead were found to be 0.87 μg L-1 and 83 for Cu(II) and 2.8 μg L-1 and 167 for Pb(II), respectively. The precision of the M-dSPμE method was found to be ≤ 3.2%. The M-dSPμE method was verified by certificate reference materials (TMDA-53.3 Fortified Lake water and NIST SRM 1573a Tomato Leaves). It was successfully applied to the determination of copper and lead in lake water, wastewaters, sea water, radish, spinach, lettuce, and celery samples.

Dispersive Solid-phase Microextraction of Lead in Waters and Edible Lettuce and Dill Extracts in the Unified Bioaccessibility Method (UBM) Saliva Solution

A new thiosemicarbazide-modified, sulfonamide-based poly (styrene) adsorbent (T-CSPS) was prepared starting from the reaction of chlorosulfonated polystyrene and thiosemicarbazide. It was characterized by SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and zeta potential. The T-CSPS was used as an adsorbent for the first time for the dispersive solid-phase microextraction (d-SPµE) and preconcentration of Pb(II) ions from waters and dill and lettuce extracts in the unified bioaccessibility method (UBM) saliva. Lead was then determined using the FAAS. In the first step of optimization, the solution pH was changed from 2 to 8, and pH 4 with a recovery value of 103% ± 5 was selected. Two milliliters of 2 mol L-1 HCl was chosen as eluent. Contact times were found to be only 2 min. Effects of coexisting ions and sample volume were tested. Under optimal conditions, the preconcentration factor (PF) and the adsorption capacity were 15 and 40 mg g-1. The RSD% was 2.2% and 3.1% for intra-day and inter-day precision, respectively. The LOD and LOQ were found to be 5.1 µg L-1 and 16.9 µg L-1, respectively. The accuracy of the d-SPµE was checked by TMDA-70.2 Lake water and BCR-482 Lichen-certified reference materials and also applying d-SPµE to spiked waters and lettuce and dill extracts in UBM saliva.

Environmentally friendly nanoflower Al2O3@carbon spheres as adsorbent for dispersive solid-phase microextraction of copper and lead in food and water samples

A fast and simple dispersive solid-phase microextraction method (d-SPμE) was described for the determination of copper and lead in food, water, and sediments using FAAS. Firstly, nanoflower Al2O3@carbon spheres composite (NF Al2O3@CSs) was synthesized and then characterized. The obtained NF Al2O3@CSs was used for the d-SPμE of copper and lead in aqueous solutions. The influence of important parameters like pH, contact time, eluent conditions, volume of sample, and competing ion effects on the d-SPμE efficiency of copper and lead was investigated. They were pH, 7; eluent, 2 mol L-1 HCl (2 mL); sample volume, 250 mL for copper and 150 mL for lead with recoveries ≥90%. The adsorption and elution of analytes on NF Al2O3@CSs were realized quickly without vortexing. The LODs of the d-SPμE for copper and lead were found to be 0.69 μg L-1 and 2.8 μg L-1, respectively, while its PF was 125 for copper and 75 for lead. The intra-day precision and inter-day repeatability (RSD%, n = 7) were 1.3% and 1.6% for Cu(II) and 2.3% and 3.2% for Pb(II), respectively. Finally, the accuracy of the d-SPμE was investigated by determination of the analytes in four certified reference materials (TMDA-53.3 Lake water, NW-TMDA-54.6 Lake water, NIST 1573a Tomato leaves, and NIST RM 8704 Buffalo River Sediment). The analyte recoveries together with analyses of dam water, river water, wastewater, sea water, sumac, tea, chocolate, and lentils were studied. The results indicate that recoveries ranged from 90 to 103% in water samples and 91 to 110% in food samples.

In-situ formation of the adsorbent based on octadecylamine for the extraction of Ag+ ions from aqueous solutions and its determination by microinjection flame atomic absorption spectrometry

In this research, a dispersive solid phase extraction procedure based on changing the solubility of octadecylamine with pH was proposed to determine Ag+ ions in different water samples. For this purpose, first, the pH of sample solution containing the analyte was adjusted to 10.5. Then desired volume of the octadecylamine dissolved in acidic solution was injected into the solution. Because of the low solubility of octadecylamine in alkaline solution, a cloudy state was formed. The produced octadecylamine particles acted as a complexing agent for Ag+ ions and adsorbent for the formed complex. The obtained cloudy solution was centrifuged and the sedimented particles were removed and dissolved in a diluted nitric acid solution. It was injected into a flame atomic absorption spectrometry to determine the extracted amounts of the analyte. The effect of important parameters such as the amount of octadecylamine, volume of nitric acid, and centrifugation and vortexing conditions on the extraction efficiency of the procedure was studied and optimized. In optimal conditions, the developed method showed a linear range of 0.50-200 µg L-1. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.18 and 0.50 µg L-1, respectively. Extraction recovery was 93.6%. The relative standard deviations were less than 4%. The effectiveness of the method was investigated by determination of Ag+ ions in water and wastewater samples.

An overview on human exposure, toxicity, solid-phase microextraction and adsorptive removal of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) from water matrices

Perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) are sub-class of perfluoroalkyl substances commonly detected in water matrices. They are persistent in the environment, hence highly toxic to living organisms. Their occurrence at trace amount, complex nature and prone to matrix interference make their extraction and detection a challenge. This study consolidates current advancements in solid-phase extraction (SPE) techniques for the trace-level analysis of PFCAs from water matrices. The advantages of the methods in terms of ease of applications, low-cost, robustness, low solvents consumption, high pre-concentration factors, better extraction efficiency, good selectivity and recovery of the analytes have been emphasized. The article also demonstrated effectiveness of some porous materials for the adsorptive removal of the PFCAs from the water matrices. Mechanisms of the SPE/adsorption techniques have been discussed. The success and limitations of the processes have been elucidated.

Introduction of a new and safe synthesis procedure for Ni-MOF-I in aqueous solution and its application for the extraction of some pesticides from different beverages

For the first time, this research introduces an analytical application of Ni-MOF-I, which was used as an adsorbent in a dispersive micro solid phase extraction procedure followed by dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for the extraction and preconcentration of seven pesticides from different fruit juices. Also, Ni-MOF-I was synthesized by a new and green method with many advantages over the previously published synthesis procedures. For example, effortless and green synthesis, no need for autoclaves and ovens, and elimination of organic solvent usage are the main highlights. The synthesized Ni-MOF-I was characterized by applying nitrogen adsorption/desorption, energy-dispersive X-ray, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, and X-ray diffraction analyses. The studied pesticides were extracted and preconcentrated by the proposed method. Then, the extracted analytes in the sedimented organic phase were injected into a gas chromatography-flame ionization detector. Acceptable analytical results such as low limits of detection (0.15-0.60 μg L-1) and quantification (0.50-2.0 μg L-1), reasonable extraction recoveries (51-80%), high enrichment factors (255-400), satisfactory relative standard deviation values of 4.8-7.2% (intra-day precision, n = 6) and 5.3-7.5% (inter-day precision, n = 4), and wide linear ranges were obtained. The proposed method can be introduced as an effective analytical technique based on Ni-MOF-I for the analysis of different pesticides in fruit beverages.

Magnetic amino-rich hyper-crosslinked polymers for fat-rich foodstuffs pretreatment in nontargeted analysis of chemical hazards

Nontargeted analysis for chemical hazards is highly desirable in controlling food safety to ensure human health. As the dominating interference in fat-rich foodstuffs, lipids removal is a great challenge in sample pretreatment. Herein, diverse lipids from both animal and vegetable oils are effectively removed and 565 chemical hazards with various physicochemical properties are used for method validation. These benefits are from the designed magnetic amino-rich hyper-crosslinked core-shell polymeric composites (Fe₃O₄@poly(MAAM-co-EGDMA)) and the application of an auto extraction system. Among them, the amino groups are the key factors for lipid removal. Theoretical calculations, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and functional monomer replacement demonstrated that the mechanisms to universally capture free fatty acids (FFAs) and triglycerides (TGs) are electrostatic interaction and supplemented by hydrogen bonding. Overall, this work highlights the great application potentials of polymeric adsorbents as sample pretreatment materials for nontargeted analysis in food safety.

Magnetic layered double hydroxides for the sensitive dispersive solid phase microextraction of hippuric acid in urine samples prior to HPLC-UV analysis

The core- shell structural layered double hydroxide (Fe₃O₄-SiO₂-EN@Zn-Al-LDH) was successfully synthesized and applied as a solid sorbent in the magnetic dispersive micro solid-phase-extraction (M-DµSPE) method. It was combined with high-performance liquid chromatography for the trace analysis of hippuric acid (HA) from urine samples. The obtained magnetic layered double hydroxides (LDHs) were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, VSM, FE-SEM, and BET techniques. The characterization analysis indicated that Fe₃O₄- SiO₂- EN@ Zn-Al-LDH has a sufficient surface area and good saturation magnetism. The affecting variables on the extraction of HA by the proposed method were optimized. Excellent adsorption capacity (127.8 mg g^-1), wide linearity dynamic range (0.015-500 µg mL^-1), and satisfactory limits of detection and quantification (0.055 and 0.014 µg mL^-1, respectively) could be obtained under optimum conditions. The good repeatability and low relative standard deviation (7.2 %), low carry-over (2.7%), good matrix effect (93.6%), high reusability (up to 19 times), and an acceptable percent recovery value (97.2%) proved the selectivity and applicability of the proposed method for the extraction of the trace levels of HA in real urine samples.

Hybrid biomaterials to preconcentrate and determine toxic metals and metalloids: a review

Toxic elements represent a serious threat to the environment and cause harmful effects on different environmental components, even at trace levels. These toxic elements are often difficult to detect through the typical instrumentation of an analytical laboratory because they are found at very low concentrations in matrices such as food and water. Therefore, preconcentration plays a fundamental role since it allows the effects of the matrix to be minimized, thus reaching lower detection limits and greater sensitivity of detection techniques. In recent years, solid-phase extraction has been successfully used for the preconcentration of metals as an environmentally friendly technique due to the fact that it eliminates or minimizes the use of reagents and solvents and offers reduced analysis times and low generation of waste in the laboratory. Hybrid biomaterials are low-cost, eco-friendly, and useful as efficient solid phases for the preconcentration of elements. In this review, recent investigations based on the use of hybrid biomaterials for the preconcentration and determination of toxic metals are presented and discussed, given special attention to bionanomaterials. A brief description of hybrid biomaterials often used for analytical purposes, as well as analytical techniques mostly used to characterize the hybrid biomaterials, is explained. Finally, the future prospects that encourage the search for new hybrid biomaterials are commented upon.

Direct immersion dual-drop microextraction for simultaneous separation and enrichment of Cr(III) and Cr(IV) in food samples prior to graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry detection

Non-chromatographic speciation methods generally involve speciation conversion, which may cause sample contamination, analysis errors and tedious operations. In this work, a direct immersion dual-drop microextraction (DIDDME) was firstly developed for separation and preconcentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI). In DIDDME, two organic drops on needle tips of microsyringes were concurrently immersed in a stirred sample solution. Each drop contains a chelating reagent for reacting with a specific species. Thus, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were selectively extracted into different drops. This method afforded detection limits of 3.0 and 4.1 ng/L, quantification limitof 10 ng/L and 14 ng/L, linear range of 0.01-30 ng mL^-1 and enrichment factors of 354-fold and 326-fold for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively. Precisions like repeatability and reproducibility were assessed by calculating relative standard deviations, which were lower than 5.4 % and 6.9 %, respectively. This procedure was used successfully for quantification of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in food samples.

Advances in solid-phase extraction techniques: Role of nanosorbents for the enrichment of antibiotics for analytical quantification

Antibiotics are life-saving medications for treating bacterial infections; however it has been discovered that resistance developed by bacteria against these incredible agents is the primary contributing factor to rising global mortality rates. The fundamental cause of the emergence of antibiotic resistance in bacteria is the presence of antibiotic residues in various environmental matrices. Although antibiotics are present in diluted form in environmental matrices like water, consistent exposure of bacteria to these minute levels is enough for the resistance to develop. So, identifying these tiny concentrations of numerous antibiotics in various and complicated matrices will be a crucial step in controlling their disposal in those matrices. Solid phase extraction, a popular and customizable extraction technology, was developed according to the aspirations of the researchers. It is a unique alternative technique that could be implemented either alone or in combination with other approaches at different stages because of the multitude of sorbent varieties and techniques. Initially, sorbents are utilized for extraction in their natural state. The basic sorbent has been modified over time with nanoparticles and multilayer sorbents, which have indeed helped to accomplish the desired extraction efficiencies. Among the current traditional extraction techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, protein precipitation, and salting out techniques, solid-phase extractions (SPE) with nanosorbents are most productive because, they can be automated, selective, and can be integrated with other extraction techniques. This review aims to provide a broad overview of advancements and developments in sorbents with a specific emphasis on the applications of SPE techniques used for antibiotic detection and quantification in various matrices in the last two decades.

β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide for the efficient enrichment of bisphenols in milk and milk packaging

In this work, β-cyclodextrin-functionalized magnetic graphene oxide (NiFe₂O₄@GO@β-CD) was synthesized and employed as magnetic solid-phase extraction adsorbent for the extraction of bisphenols before high performance liquid chromatography analysis. The modification of β-cyclodextrin could enhance the adsorption performance of NiFe₂O₄@GO@β-CD towards bisphenols through the host-guest interaction and hydrogen-bond interaction. Under the optimal conditions, good linearities between peak area and concentration of bisphenols (1 - 300 μg L^-1, r ≥ 0.9989) were obtained with the limits of detection (S/N = 3) in the range of 0.050 - 0.10 μg L^-1. The recoveries of bisphenols in milk and milk packaging ranged from 78.0% to 101.6%. Moreover, NiFe₂O₄@GO@β-CD showed stable chemical properties and good reusability with the recoveries of bisphenols remained above 80.0% after 12 MSPE cycles. The adsorption characteristics of NiFe₂O₄@GO@β-CD towards bisphenols fitted well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model. The hydrogen-bond interaction, π-π interaction, host-guest interaction and electrostatic interaction between sorbent and bisphenols played important role during the adsorption process. The developed method showed potential applications for the analysis of trace bisphenols in milk and milk packaging.

Analytical approaches for determination of COVID-19 candidate drugs in human biological matrices

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of antiviral and other available drugs has been considered to combat or reduce the clinical symptoms of patients. In this regard, it would be necessary to choose sensitive and selective analytical techniques for pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic studies, monitoring of drug concentration in biological fluids, and determination of the most appropriate dose to achieve the desired effect on the disease. In the present study, the analytical techniques based on spectroscopy and chromatography with different detectors for diagnosis and determination of candidate drugs in the treatment of COVID-19 in human biological fluids are reviewed during the period 2015-2022. Moreover, various sample preparation and extraction techniques, are being used for this purpose, such as protein precipitation (PP), solid-phase extraction (SPE), liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), and QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) are investigated.

Application of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and zeolite nanoparticles for simultaneous preconcentration of codeine and tramadol in saliva prior to HPLC determination

In this work, a dispersive micro-solid phase extraction technique along with high-performance liquid chromatography-UV detection was developed for simultaneous preconcentraion and determination of trace levels of codeine and tramadol in human saliva. This method is based on the adsorption of codeine and tramadol on a mixture of oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and zeolite Y nanoparticles with 1:1 ratio as an efficient nanosorbent. Various analytical parameters influencing the adsorption step including the amount of adsorbent, the pH of the sample solution, the temperature, the stirring rate, the contact time of the sample solution, and the adsorption capacity were investigated. Based on the results, 10 mg adsorbent, sample solutions with pH = 7.6, temperature of 25 °C, stirring rate 750 rpm and contact time 15 min, in the adsorption step shows the best results for both drugs. Then the effective parameters on the analyte desorption stage such as the type of desorption solution, pH of the desorption solution, desorption time and desorption volume were investigated. Studies have shown that water/methanol (50:50 v/v) as desorption solution, pH = 2.0, desorption time of 5 min and desorption volume of 2 ml gives the best results.Chromatographic separation was performed on a RP-Shim-pack CLC-ODS-C18 column (250 mm × 4.6 mm, 5 µm) with isocratic mode. The mobile phase contained of acetonitrile:phosphate buffer (18:82, v/v) at pH = 4.5 and the flow rate was 1 ml.min^-1. The wavelength of UV detector was adjusted at 210 nm and 198 nm for codeine and tramadol, respectively.Under optimum conditions, the extraction efficiencies of 98.5% and 99.2% were achieved for codeine and tramadol respectively. Enrichment factor of 13, detection limit of 0.3 μg L^-1, relative standard deviation of 4.07 for codeine; and an enrichment factor of 15, a detection limit of 0.15 μg L^-1, and standard deviation of 2.06 for tramadol were calculated. The linear range of the procedure for each drug was 1.0 to 1000 μg L^-1. This method was successfully applied for the analysis of codeine and tramadol in saliva samples.

Advancements in Clay Materials for Trace Level Determination and Remediation of Phenols from Wastewater: A Review

The wide spread of phenols and their toxicity in the environment pose a severe threat to the existence and sustainability of living organisms. Rapid detection of these pollutants in wastewaters has attracted the attention of researchers from various fields of environmental science and engineering. Discoveries regarding materials and method developments are deemed necessary for the effective detection and remediation of wastewater. Although various advanced materials such as organic and inorganic materials have been developed, secondary pollution due to material leaching has become a major concern. Therefore, a natural-based material is preferable. Clay is one of the potential natural-based sorbents for the detection and remediation of phenols. It has a high porosity and polarity, good mechanical strength, moisture resistance, chemical and thermal stability, and cation exchange capacity, which will benefit the detection and adsorptive removal of phenols. Several attempts have been made to improve the capabilities of natural clay as sorbent. This manuscript will discuss the potential of clays as sorbents for the remediation of phenols. The activation, modification, and application of clays have been discussed. The achievements, challenges, and concluding remarks were provided.

Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes Embedded in a Polymeric Matrix as a New Material for Thin Film Microextraction (TFME) in Organic Pollutant Monitoring

It is essential to monitor organic pollutants to control contamination levels in environmental water bodies. In this respect, the development of new materials based on functionalised polymeric films for the measurement of toxic compounds is of interest. In this study, we prepare new films based on polymer cellulose triacetate modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes for the monitoring of selected compounds: a fungicide (chlorpyrifos) and two emerging contaminants, the musk tonalide and the bactericide triclosan, which are used in the formulation of personal care products. The films, upon contact with water samples and following the principles of thin film microextraction, allow the determination of organic pollutants at low concentration levels. The contact time of the film with a predetermined volume of water is fixed at 60 min, and the compounds are eluted with a small volume (1 mL) of organic solvent for GC-MS analysis. Parameters such as repeatability for different films and detection limits are found to be satisfactory. Applying the method to river water demonstrates its suitability and, in the cases of chlorpyrifos and tonalide, the absence of a significant matrix effect.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymeric Sorbent for Targeted Dispersive Solid-Phase Microextraction of Fipronil from Milk Samples

Fipronil, a phenyl pyrazole insecticide, is extensively used in agriculture to control insect infestation. It has the potential to assimilate into the food chain, leading to serious health concerns. We report molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-based dispersive solid-phase microextraction for the targeted determination of fipronil in milk samples. Designing such a sorbent is of paramount importance for measuring the accurate amount of fipronil for monitoring its permissible limit. Response surface methodology based on a central composite design following a face-centered approach was used to optimize experimental conditions. The maximum binding capacity of 47 mg g^-1 was achieved at optimal parameters of time (18 min), temperature (42 °C), pH (7), and analyte concentration (120 mg L^-1). Under these conditions, a high percentage recovery of 94.6 ± 1.90% (n = 9) and a low limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) (5.64 × 10^-6 and 1.71 × 10^-5 μg mL^-1, respectively) were obtained. The MIP was well characterized through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) as well as Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) methods. Adsorption kinetics of the MIP followed the pseudo-first-order model (R ² 0.99 and χ² 0.96), suggesting the MIP-analyte interaction to be a physiosorptive process, while adsorption isotherms followed the Freundlich model (R ² 0.99). The real sample analysis through high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) confirmed the selective determination of fipronil from milk samples.

Preparation and Application of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Flavonoids: Review and Perspective

The separation and detection of flavonoids from various natural products have attracted increasing attention in the field of natural product research and development. Depending on the high specificity of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs), MIPs are proposed as efficient adsorbents for the selective extraction and separation of flavonoids from complex samples. At present, a comprehensive review article to summarize the separation and purification of flavonoids using molecular imprinting, and the employment of MIP-based sensors for the detection of flavonoids is still lacking. Here, we reviewed the general preparation methods of MIPs towards flavonoids, including bulk polymerization, precipitation polymerization, surface imprinting and emulsion polymerization. Additionally, a variety of applications of MIPs towards flavonoids are summarized, such as the different forms of MIP-based solid phase extraction (SPE) for the separation of flavonoids, and the MIP-based sensors for the detection of flavonoids. Finally, we discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the current synthetic methods for preparing MIPs of flavonoids and prospected the approaches for detecting flavonoids in the future. The purpose of this review is to provide helpful suggestions for the novel preparation methods of MIPs for the extraction of flavonoids and emerging applications of MIPs for the detection of flavonoids from natural products and biological samples.

Application of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 as a Dispersive Microsolid-Phase Extraction Material for Determination of Cyclophosphamide in Urine by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

In this paper, an aluminum-based metal-organic framework (MIL-53(Al)-NH₂) was synthesized and employed as a well-known and efficient dispersive microsolid-phase extraction (Dμ-SPE) sorbent for reliable determination of cyclophosphamide in urine samples by the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) technique. The synthesized MIL-53(Al)-NH₂ was characterized by FT-IR, PXRD, FE-SEM, and EDS for more details. Then, the effective parameters of the preconcentration and extraction of urinary cyclophosphamide including the amount of the solid sorbent, the pH of the sample, sample volume, extraction and desorption time, and the type and volume of elution solvent were thoroughly investigated and optimized. According to the results, a linear dynamic range of 0.14-120 μg mL^-1 with a good correlation coefficient (R ² = 0.998) and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.05 μg mL^-1 were obtained with intra- and interday relative standard deviations (n = 9) of 3.13 and 3.99% in optimized conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the absolute recovery of urinary cyclophosphamide at three concentrations (0.5, 50.0, and 100.0 μg mL^-1) was 94.0%. Finally, the optimal condition of the developed method was successfully applied to the extraction and analysis of cyclophosphamide from the real urine samples with satisfactory recovery (94.0-97.0%) and acceptable precision (<4.1%). The findings proved that MIL-53(Al)-NH₂ can be utilized as a suitable adsorbent for highly reliable extraction of cyclophosphamide in biological matrices.

Potential of sodium dodecyl sulfate micellar solutions as eluents in magnetic dispersive micro-solid phase extraction with polydopamine-coated magnetite nanoparticles. Application to antidepressant drugs

In this paper, the potential of micellar solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as eluents in dispersive micro-solid phase extraction (D-μSPE) using polydopamine-coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs) for the extraction and preconcentration of seven basic drugs (bupropion, citalopram, fluoxetine, mianserin, nomifensine, trimipramine, and viloxazine) is explored for the first time (to the best to our knowledge) and compared with conventional hydro-organic eluents. The impact of the sample solution pH, Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs and PDA coating amounts and extraction time on the extraction efficiency (EE), as well as the composition of the eluent on the overall efficiency (OE) are studied. Under the selected experimental conditions (50 mg of Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs, 100 μL of 1 M NH₃, 5 min of extraction time and 0.15 M SDS at pH 2.6 as eluent), EE and OE values were higher than 90% for all compounds and for the most hydrophobic compounds (trimipramine, fluoxetine and mianserin), respectively. The results shown in this paper demonstrate the suitability of Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs as a sorbent for the extraction of antidepressants as well as the advantages of using SDS micellar solutions over classic hydro-organic eluents containing methanol, acetonitrile or tetrahydrofuran. Finally, the stability and reusability of the Fe₃O₄@PDA NPs is proven.

Green bioanalysis: an innovative and eco-friendly approach for analyzing drugs in biological matrices

Green bioanalytical techniques aim to reduce or eliminate the hazardous waste produced by bioanalytical technologies. A well-organized and practical approach towards bioanalytical method development has an enormous contribution to the green analysis. The selection of the appropriate sample extraction process, organic mobile phase components and separation technique makes the bioanalytical method green. UHPLC-MS is the best option, whereas supercritical fluid chromatography is one of the most effective green bioanalytical procedures. Nevertheless, there remains excellent scope for further research on green bioanalytical methods. This review details the various sample preparation techniques that follow green analytical chemistry principles. Furthermore, it presents green solvents as a replacement for conventional organic solvents and highlights the strategies to convert modern analytical techniques to green methods.

Metal-organic frameworks in chiral separation of pharmaceuticals

Stereoselective chiral molecules are responsible for specific biological functions in nature. At present, more than half of the prescribed drugs are chiral. Living organisms display divergent pharmacological responses to the enantiomers, leading to altered toxicity, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. Thus, chiral analysis, separation, and extraction are crucial for ensuring enantiomeric purity to develop safe and effective medication. In recent times, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with appealing structures are gaining importance because of their fascinating properties as a sorbent and stationary phase. MOFs are crystalline porous solid materials built by interconnecting metal ions or clusters and organic linkers. This review explores the advancements in MOFs for the isolation and separation of chiral active pharmaceutical drugs.

A nanocomposite of silica coated magnetite nanoparticles and aniline-anthranilic acid co-polymeric nanorods with improved stability and selectivity for fluoroquinolones dispersive micro solid phase extraction

Adsorbents composed of polyaniline nanostructures or their derivatives immobilized on magnetic nanoparticles had gained increasing interest for application in dispersive micro-solid phase extraction. However, reproducible binding between polymeric PANI nanopaterials and magnetic nanomaterials are still a challenging task. Furthermore, other challenges are the enhancement of physical and chemical stability of adsorbent magnetic nanoparticles as well as improvement of polymeric PANI nanoparticles selectivity towards target analytes. This work described the reproducible preparation of a nanocomposite of aniline-anthranilic acid co-polymeric nanorods with silica coated magnetite nanoparticles by physical mixing of its basic components. The prepared nanocomposite had proven stability against chemical and atmospheric attack. The formed nanocomposite in this work had advantages regarding stability and selectivity towards fluoroquinolones as compared with analogues prepared from polyaniline polymers and/or uncoated magnetite nanoparticles. The selectivity of the formed adsorbent was further optimized for microextraction of four fluoroquinolone antibacterial agents. The application of the prepared nanocomposite was exemplified in microextraction of the studied fluoroquinolones from spiked milk samples to enable their detection down to their stated maximum residue limits.

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine and related compounds in the environment: Recent updates on pretreatment, analysis, and removal techniques

Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (1,1-Dimethylhydrazine, UDMH) has been widely used as aerospace fuel in many countries. The launch of space vehicles can cause the release and leakage of UDMH into the environment, posing serious threats to ecology system and human population. Even worse, the health risks are also pertinent to its numerous classes of transformation products including N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), because most of them display carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Recently, there has been an intense ongoing development of simple, fast, green, and effective techniques for determining and removing these hazardous substances. This review summarizes the latest research progress regarding the sources, fates, pretreatment, analysis, and removal techniques of UDMH and related products in the environment. Sample preparation methods mainly include pressurized liquid extraction, liquid-phase microextraction techniques, solid-phase extraction, headspace-solid-phase microextraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. Detection and identification methods mainly include high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), gas chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), and sensors. Removal methods mainly include advanced oxidation processes, adsorption, biodegradation techniques. The advantages/disadvantages, applications, and trends of the proposed approaches are thoroughly discussed to provide a valuable reference for further studies.
