Current applications and perspectives of ion mobility spectrometry to answer chemical food safety issues

Accurate Collisional Cross Section Measurement by Multipass Cyclic Ion Mobility Spectrometry

Ion mobility-mass spectrometry (IM-MS) is a powerful analytical tool for structural characterization. IM measurement provides collision cross section (CCS) values that facilitate analyte identification. While CCS values can be directly calculated from mobility measurements obtained using drift tube ion mobility spectrometry (DT-IMS), this method has limited mobility resolution due to the practical constraints on the length of the ion drift path. Consequently, DT-IMS cannot differentiate analytes with similar mobilities or resolve fine mobility features of individual ions. Cyclic IMS (cIMS) instruments leverage a cyclic path enabled by traveling wave ion mobility (TWIM) technology and offer increased mobility solution to address this challenge. While TWIM devices must first be calibrated to enable CCS measurements, current calibration strategies are primarily tailored for single-pass analyses. This preference is partly attributed to the challenges associated with multipass calibration methods, which require both calibrants and analytes to experience the same number of passes. Achieving this consistency can be complicated due to factors like peak splitting and diffusion, and may not be feasible for online IM-MS analyses. A recent report employed average ion velocities obtained from multiple measurements under different separation pathlengths as a path length-independent metric for CCS calibration. However, the ability to exploit this averaging approach is limited by observed variation in ion drift time/velocity in these measurements. In this study, we introduce a novel calibration strategy designed for multipass cIMS analyses, directly targeting the root cause for the path length- and mobility-dependent variations in ion drift time. With this method, we demonstrate that CCS values derived from multipass measurements closely align with those obtained from single-pass analyses, with an average deviation of 0.1%. We apply this method to characterize four isomeric trisaccharides. Our approach not only results in excellent agreement between our measured cIMSCCS values and the reported DTCCS values, with an average difference of only 0.5%, but also allows us to effectively identify subtle mobility characteristics of each compound and determine their respective CCS values. This level of detail and accuracy was previously unattainable using DT-IMS or single-pass cIMS measurements. We developed an algorithm for reconstructing arrival time distribution in cases where wrap-around has resulted in peak splitting. Collectively, the new calibration strategy and the reconstruction procedure maintain reproducibility and precision in CCS measurements while largely eliminating the need for meticulous selection of separation times. We expect that our method will empower researchers to harness the high mobility resolution offered by multipass cIMS analyses without compromising the accuracy of CCS measurement, making it appropriate for straightforward use across a wide range of applications.

Recent advances and challenges in the analysis of natural toxins

Natural toxins (NTs) are poisonous secondary metabolites produced by living organisms developed to ward off predators. Especially low molecular weight NTs (MW<∼1 kDa), such as mycotoxins, phycotoxins, and plant toxins, are considered an important and growing food safety concern. Therefore, accurate risk assessment of food and feed for the presence of NTs is crucial. Currently, the analysis of NTs is predominantly performed with targeted high pressure liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) methods. Although these methods are highly sensitive and accurate, they are relatively expensive and time-consuming, while unknown or unexpected NTs will be missed. To overcome this, novel on-site screening methods and non-targeted HPLC high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) methods have been developed. On-site screening methods can give non-specialists the possibility for broad "scanning" of potential geographical regions of interest, while also providing sensitive and specific analysis at the point-of-need. Non-targeted chromatography-HRMS methods can detect unexpected as well as unknown NTs and their metabolites in a lab-based approach. The aim of this chapter is to provide an insight in the recent advances, challenges, and perspectives in the field of NTs analysis both from the on-site and the laboratory perspective.

Anabolic steroids in livestock production: Background and implications for chemical food safety

The use of steroids in livestock animals is a source of concern for consumers because of the risks associated with the presence of their residues in foodstuffs of animal origin. Technological advances such as mass spectrometry have made it possible to play a fundamental role in controlling such practices, firstly for the discovery of marker metabolites but also for the monitoring of these compounds under the regulatory framework. Current control strategies rely on the monitoring of either the parent drug or its metabolites in various matrices of interest. As some of these steroids also have an endogenous status specific strategies have to be applied for control purposes. This review aims to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of analytical strategies, whether targeted or non-targeted, and whether they focus on markers of exposure or effect in the specific context of chemical food safety regarding the use of anabolic steroids in livestock. The role of new approaches in data acquisition (e.g. ion mobility), processing and analysis, (e.g. molecular networking), is also discussed.

Effect of resolution enhancement using metal ion assisted strategy based on electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry: A case study of carbendazim and thiabendazole in fruits

A method for the rapid and simultaneous determination of carbendazim and thiabendazole residues by electrospray ionization-ion mobility spectrometry (ESI-IMS) combined with a metal ion-assisted technique was developed and validated in different fruit matrices. The metal ion assisted strategy was performed instead of tedious pre-separation procedures to overcome the limitation of low resolution of IMS. Four transition metal cations, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II), were screened and their interactions with carbendazim and thiabendazole were investigated. The injection flow rate and metal ion concentration were optimized. The Cu(II) assisted approach helped to achieve well-separated peaks with a peak-to-peak resolution of 3.61. This method was then applied to detect carbendazim and thiabendazole simultaneously in apples, pears, bananas, and mangoes. The limit of detection (LOD) were 0.03 mg kg-1 and 0.13 mg kg-1 for carbendazim and thiabendazole, respectively, while spiked recoveries were 61.5-122.0% and 83.5-119.8%, respectively, with RSDs less than 13.9%. These satisfactory evaluation parameters indicated that the approach was capable of performing quantitative analysis of multi-pesticide residues. In addition, the feasibility of using metal ion assisted-ESI-IMS for the simultaneous detection also was theoretically demonstrated through molecular electrostatic potential analysis and binding energy calculation based on density functional theory (DFT). Both experimental and theoretical results revealed the effectiveness of the metal ion assisted strategy in improving the resolution of ESI-IMS.

Gas chromatography ion mobility spectroscopy: A rapid and effective tool for monitoring oil oxidation

Oil autoxidation is an early process of food deterioration, monitoring oil oxidation is therefore of great significance to ensure food quality and safety. In this study, a detection method of the primary and secondary oxidative products was developed by gas chromatography ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS).The secondary oxidative products was analyzed by GC-IMS. Then, the relationships between peroxide values and the contents of secondary oxidative products were investigated by constructing a prediction model of peroxide value of rapeseed oil with the help of secondary oxidative products and chemometrics. The coefficient of determination Q2 of the model validation set is 0.96, and the RMSECV is 0.1570 g/100 g. These validation results indicated that secondary oxidative products could also reflect the content of the primary oxidative products. Moreover, 10 characteristic markers related to oxidative rancidity were identified for monitoring edible oil rancidity and oxidative stability.

Differentiation of steroid isomers by steroid analogues adducted trapped ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry

Steroids are one of the important indicators of health and disease. However, due to the high similarity of steroid structures, there are several potential obstacles in the differentiation of steroids, especially for their isomers. Herein, we described a trapped ion mobility spectrometry-mass spectrometry (TIMS-MS) approach based on the steroid analogue adduction for isomer-specific identification of steroids. The application of dexamethasone (DEX) to form heterodimers with steroids enhanced the separation of their isomers in TIMS. Two isomer pairs including 17-hydroxyprogesterone/11-deoxycorticosterone and androsterone/epiandrosterone were successfully separated as the heterodimers with DEX by TIMS. The stability of DEX-adducted heterodimers is comparable with steroid dimers. Owing to the high separation efficiency and stability, the relative quantification of steroid isomers was demonstrated with the proposed method.

Characterization of Key Compounds of Organic Acids and Aroma Volatiles in Fruits of Different Actinidia argute Resources Based on High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and Headspace Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS)

Actinidia arguta, known for its distinctive flavor and high nutritional value, has seen an increase in cultivation and variety identification. However, the characterization of its volatile aroma compounds remains limited. This study aimed to understand the flavor quality and key volatile aroma compounds of different A. arguta fruits. We examined 35 A. arguta resource fruits for soluble sugars, titratable acids, and sugar-acid ratios. Their organic acids and volatile aroma compounds were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS). The study found that among the 35 samples tested, S12 had a higher sugar-acid ratio due to its higher sugar content despite having a high titratable acid content, making its fruit flavor superior to other sources. The A. arguta resource fruits can be classified into two types: those dominated by citric acid and those dominated by quinic acid. The analysis identified a total of 76 volatile aroma substances in 35 A. arguta resource fruits. These included 18 esters, 14 alcohols, 16 ketones, 12 aldehydes, seven terpenes, three pyrazines, two furans, two acids, and two other compounds. Aldehydes had the highest relative content of total volatile compounds. Using the orthogonal partial least squares discriminant method (OPLS-DA) analysis, with the 76 volatile aroma substances as dependent variables and different soft date kiwifruit resources as independent variables, 33 volatile aroma substances with variable importance in projection (VIP) greater than 1 were identified as the main aroma substances of A. arguta resource fruits. The volatile aroma compounds with VIP values greater than 1 were analyzed for odor activity value (OAV). The OAV values of isoamyl acetate, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 1-hexanol, and butanal were significantly higher than those of the other compounds. This suggests that these four volatile compounds contribute more to the overall aroma of A. arguta. This study is significant for understanding the differences between the fruit aromas of different A. arguta resources and for scientifically recognizing the characteristic compounds of the fruit aromas of different A. arguta resources.

Analysis of the effect of Tenebrio Molitor rennet on the flavor formation of Cheddar cheese during ripening based on gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS)

This study aimed to evaluate the potential application of Tenebrio Molitor rennet (TMR) in Cheddar cheese production, and to use gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) to monitor flavor compounds and fingerprints of cheese during ripening. The results indicated that Cheddar cheese prepared from TMR (T_F) has fat content significantly lower than that of commercial rennet (C_F) (p < 0.05). However, the results of the sensory evaluation showed that there were no statistically significant differences between the two kinds of cheese (p > 0.05). Both cheeses were rich in free amino acids and free fatty acids. Compared to the C_F cheese, gamma-aminobutyric acid and Ornithine contents of the T_F cheese reached 187 and 749 mg/kg, respectively, during 120 days of ripening. Moreover, GC-IMS provided information on the characteristics of 40 flavor substances (monomers and dimers) in the T_F cheese during ripening. Only 30 flavor substances were identified in the C_F cheese. The fingerprint of the two kinds of cheese during ripening can be established by GC-IMS and principal component analysis based on the identified flavor compounds. Therefore, TMR has potential application in Cheddar cheese production. GC-IMS might be applied for the quick, accurate and comprehensive monitoring of cheese flavor during ripening.

Functional, Physical, and Volatile Characterization of Chitosan/Starch Food Films Functionalized with Mango Leaf Extract

Active packaging is one of the currently thriving methods to preserve highly perishable foods. Nonetheless, the integration of active substances into the formulation of the packaging may alter their properties-particularly mass transfer properties-and therefore, the active compounds acting. Different formulations of chitosan (CH), starch (ST), and their blends (CH-ST), with the addition of mango leaf extract (MLE) have been polymerized by casting to evaluate their food preservation efficiency. A CH-ST blend with 3% MLE using 7.5 mL of the filmogenic solution proved to be the most effective formulation because of its high bioactivity (ca. 80% and 74% of inhibition growth of S. aureus and E. coli, respectively, and 40% antioxidant capacity). The formulation reduced the water solubility and water vapor permeability while increasing UV protection, properties that provide a better preservation of raspberry fruit after 13 days than the control. Moreover, a novel method of Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry to analyze the volatile profiles of the films is employed, to study the potential modification of the food in contact with the active film. These migrated compounds were shown to be closely related to both the mango extract additions and the film's formulation themselves, showing different fingerprints depending on the film.

Analysis of volatile compounds and flavor fingerprint in hairtail (Trichiurus lepturus) during air-drying using headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS)

In the present study, changes in volatile compounds during processing were analyzed using the headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), to investigate the generation of aroma in hairtails (Trichiurus lepturus) during air-drying. Physicochemical indices, such as moisture content and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), were also detected. Flavor fingerprints were studied and developed to distinguish the samples of fresh hairtails (0 day) from air-dried hairtails (2 and 4 days). A total of 75 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified in hairtails, in which alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and esters were the principal contributors to the formation of the overall flavor of hairtails during air-drying. Seven flavor compounds (ethanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 1-pentanol, hexanal, octanal, benzaldehyde, and 3-methylbutanal), two flavor compounds (acetoin and dimethyl sulfide), and eight flavor compounds (1-hexanol, 1-octen-3-ol, nonanal, heptanal, 2-heptanone, ethyl acetate, trimethylamine, and ammonia) were identified in 0, 2, and 4 air-dried hairtails as biomarkers, respectively. The results showed that HS-GC-IMS could detect VOCs in different air-dried hairtails rapidly and comprehensively.

Metabolomics-centered mining of plant metabolic diversity and function: Past decade and future perspectives

Plants are natural experts in organic synthesis, being able to generate large numbers of specific metabolites with widely varying structures that help them adapt to variable survival challenges. Metabolomics is a research discipline that integrates the capabilities of several types of research including analytical chemistry, statistics, and biochemistry. Its ongoing development provides strategies for gaining a systematic understanding of quantitative changes in the levels of metabolites. Metabolomics is usually performed by targeting either a specific cell, a specific tissue, or the entire organism. Considerable advances in science and technology over the last three decades have propelled us into the era of multi-omics, in which metabolomics, despite at an earlier developmental stage than genomics, transcriptomics, and proteomics, offers the distinct advantage of studying the cellular entities that have the greatest influence on end phenotype. Here, we summarize the state of the art of metabolite detection and identification, and illustrate these techniques with four case study applications: (i) comparing metabolite composition within and between species, (ii) assessing spatio-temporal metabolic changes during plant development, (iii) mining characteristic metabolites of plants in different ecological environments and upon exposure to various stresses, and (iv) assessing the performance of metabolomics as a means of functional gene identification , metabolic pathway elucidation, and metabolomics-assisted breeding through analyzing plant populations with diverse genetic variations. In addition, we highlight the prominent contributions of joint analyses of plant metabolomics and other omics datasets, including those from genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, phenomics, microbiomes, and ion-omics studies. Finally, we discuss future directions and challenges exploiting metabolomics-centered approaches in understanding plant metabolic diversity.

Food metabolomics: Latest hardware-developments for nontargeted food authenticity and food safety testing

The analytical requirements for food testing have increased significantly in recent years. On the one hand, because food fraud is becoming an ever-greater challenge worldwide, and on the other hand because food safety is often difficult to monitor due to the far-reaching trade chains. In addition, the expectations of consumers on the quality of food have increased, and they are demanding extensive information. Cutting-edge analytical methods are required to meet these demands. In this context, non-targeted metabolomics strategies using mass and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers (mass spectrometry [MS]) have proven to be very suitable. MS-based approaches are of particular importance as they provide a comparatively high analytical coverage of the metabolome. Accordingly, the efficiency to address even challenging issues is high. A variety of hardware developments, which are explained in this review, have contributed to these advances. In addition, the potential of future developments is highlighted, some of which are currently not yet commercially available or only used to a comparatively small extent but are expected to gain in importance in the coming years.

Characterization of the Volatile Compounds of Onion with Different Fresh-Cut Styles and Storage Temperatures

The flavor of fresh onion and its processed products is an important index with which to evaluate its quality. In this study, the highly volatile compounds of onion with different fresh-cut styles (bulb, ring, and square) and different storage temperatures (4 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C) were characterized at the molecular level, focusing in particular on the volatile sulfur compounds. Headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) and headspace solid-phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS) were employed. A total of 14 highly volatile compounds were identified in onion samples by HS-GC-IMS, and the square sample contained more volatile components. (E,E)-2,4-heptadianal, ethyl acetate, 2-methyl-1-pentanol, 2-pentylfuran, propyl acetate, and 2,6-dimethylpyrazine were produced in the ring and square samples when stored at higher temperatures, while pentanal, 2-heptenal, hexanal were decreased after cutting. Simultaneously, 16 sulfur compounds were identified in onions by HS-SPME-GC-MS. The sulfur compounds profile of the bulbs was significantly different from that of the rings and squares at any temperature. When stored at a low temperature (4 °C), cutting onions into a ring or square shape produced more sulfur. However, at higher temperatures (20 °C and 25 °C), fresh-cutting decreased the sulfur concentration. The total content of sulfur compounds was higher in the same cut style stored at higher temperatures (20 °C or 25 °C). 2-Mercapto-3,4-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrothiophene and 2,4-dimethylthiophene were formed during storage; however, (E)-1-(prop-1-en-1-yl)-3-propyltrisulfane, 1-(1-(methylthio)propyl)-2-propyldisulfane, (Z)-1-(1-propenyldithio)propyl disulfide, dipropyl trisulfide, and methyl 1-(1-propenylthio)propyl disulfide were lost from all samples after storage.

Ion mobility-mass spectrometry to extend analytical performance in the determination of ergot alkaloids in cereal samples

This work evaluates the potential of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) to improve the analytical performance of current liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) workflows applied to the determination of ergot alkaloids (EAs) in cereal samples. Collision cross section (CCS) values for EA epimers are reported for the first time to contribute to their unambiguous identification. Additionally, CCS values have been inter-laboratory cross-validated and compared with CCS values predicted by machine-learning models. Slight differences were observed in terms of CCS values for ergotamine, ergosine and ergocristine and their corresponding epimers (from 3.3 to 4%), being sufficient to achieve a satisfactory peak-to-peak resolution for their unequivocal identification. A LC-travelling wave ion mobility (TWIM)-MS method has been developed for the analysis of EAs in barley and wheat samples. Signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) was improved between 2.5 and 4-fold compared to the analog LC-TOF-MS method. The quality of the extracted ion chromatograms was also improved by using IMS.

Characterization of the Key Aroma Volatile Compounds in Nine Different Grape Varieties Wine by Headspace Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), Odor Activity Values (OAV) and Sensory Analysis

During this study, the physicochemical properties, color, and volatile aroma compounds of the original wines produced from the grape varieties ‘Hassan’, ‘Zuoshaner’, ‘Beibinghong’, ‘Zuoyouhong’, ‘Beta’, ‘Shuanghong’, ‘Zijingganlu’, ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, and ‘Syrah’ were determined and sensory evaluation was performed. Results indicated that ‘Hassan’ contained the most solids, ‘Zuoshaner’ produced the most total acid, residual sugar, total anthocyanin, and total phenol, and ‘Shuanghong’ produced the most tannin. Calculation of the chroma and hue of the wines according to the CIEL*a*b* parameters revealed that the ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ wines were the brightest of the nine varieties and that the ‘Zuoshaner’ wines had the greatest red hue and yellow hue and the greatest saturation’. A total of 52 volatile compounds were identified and quantified in nine wine samples by HS-GC-IMS analysis, with the most significant number of species detected being 20 esters, followed by 16 alcohols, 8 aldehydes, four ketones, one terpene, and one furan, with the highest total volatile compound content being ‘Beta’. A total of 14 volatile components with OAV (odor activity value) >1 were calculated using the odor activity value (OAV) of the threshold of the aromatic compound, and the OPLS-DA analysis was performed by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) using the OAV values of the compounds with OAV values >1 as the Y variable. The VIP (Variable Importance in Projection) values of six compounds, ethyl isobutyrate, ethyl hexanoate-D, 2-methylpropanal, ethyl octanoate, ethyl butanoate-D, and Isoamyl acetate-D, were calculated to be higher than one between groups, indicating that these six compounds may influence aroma differences. It is essential to recognize that the results of this study have implications for understanding the quality differences between different varieties of wines and for developing wines that have the characteristics of those varieties.

Almost perfect sequence modulated multiplexing ion mobility spectrometry

RATIONALE

Multiplexing ion mobility spectrometry with multiple ion injection pulses was used to achieve a high duty cycle and thus improve the signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio while maintaining high resolving power compared with the traditional single-pulse signal averaging method. Historically, an ion mobility spectrum was reconstructed by various multiplexing methods including Fourier transform ion mobility spectrometry (FT-IMS), Hadamard transform ion mobility spectrometry (HT-IMS), and linear frequency modulation correlation ion mobility spectrometry (LFM-CIMS) sequence or Barker code.

METHODS

To achieve an artifact-free multiplexing ion mobility spectrum, an almost perfect sequence (APS) with correlation technique was proposed to modulate the Bradbury-Nielson ion gate and was compared with FT-IMS, HT-IMS, LFM-IMS, and the traditional single-pulse signal averaging method.

RESULTS

Experimental results showed that there are no artifact peaks in the APS-IMS spectra except an inverted mirror peak, and the S/N ratio was improved 5-8 times with a repetition time of 40-60 ms, corresponding to the improvement in the duty cycle. With the same duty cycle and similar acquisition time, APS-IMS showed a higher S/N ratio than HT-IMS for its unique autocorrelation response.

CONCLUSIONS

The APS-IMS technique offered a higher duty cycle and relatively shorter modulation period compared with reported multiplexing methods and is suitable to track rapidly changing signals without losing information and adding extra transformation artifact peaks.

Miniaturized Photo-Ionization Fourier Deconvolution Ion Mobility Spectrometer for the Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds

Because of its simplicity, reliability, and sensitivity, the drift tube ion mobility spectrometer (IMS) has been recognized as the equipment of choice for the on-site monitoring and identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the performance of handheld IMS is often limited by the size, weight, and drift voltage, which heavily determine the sensitivity and resolving power that is crucial for the detection and identification of VOCs. In this work, we present a low-cost, miniaturized drift tube ion mobility spectrometer incorporated with a miniaturized UV ionization lamp and a relatively low drift voltage. The sensitivity and resolving power are boosted with the implementation of Fourier deconvolution multiplexing compared to the conventional signal averaging data acquisition method. The drift tube provides a high resolving power of up to 52 at a drift length of 41 mm, 10 mm ID dimensions, and a drift voltage of 1.57 kV. Acetone, benzene, dimethyl methyl phosphonate, methyl salicylate, and acetic acid were evaluated in the developed spectrometer and showed satisfactory performance.

Current Role of Mass Spectrometry in the Determination of Pesticide Residues in Food

The extensive use of pesticides represents a risk to human health. Consequently, legal frameworks have been established to ensure food safety, including control programs for pesticide residues. In this context, the performance of analytical methods acquires special relevance. Such methods are expected to be able to determine the largest number of compounds at trace concentration levels in complex food matrices, which represents a great analytical challenge. Technical advances in mass spectrometry (MS) have led to the development of more efficient analytical methods for the determination of pesticides. This review provides an overview of current analytical strategies applied in pesticide analysis, with a special focus on MS methods. Current targeted MS methods allow the simultaneous determination of hundreds of pesticides, whereas non-targeted MS methods are now applicable to the identification of pesticide metabolites and transformation products. New trends in pesticide analysis are also presented, including approaches for the simultaneous determination of pesticide residues and other food contaminants (i.e., mega-methods), or the recent application of techniques such as ion mobility–mass spectrometry (IM–MS) for this purpose.

Differential mobility spectrometry coupled to mass spectrometry (DMS-MS) for the classification of Spanish PDO paprika

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) has proved its huge potential in many research areas, especially when hyphenated with chromatographic techniques or mass spectrometry (MS). However, focusing on food analysis, and particularly in classification and authentication issues, very few applications have been reported. In this study, differential mobility spectrometry coupled to mass spectrometry (DMS-MS) is presented for the first time as an alternative and high-throughput technique for food classification and authentication purposes using a fingerprinting strategy. As a study case, 70 Spanish paprika samples (from La Vera, Murcia, and Mallorca) were analyzed by DMS-MS to address their classification -using partial least squares regression-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA)- and authentication -through soft independent modeling of class analogy (SIMCA). As a result, after external validation, complete sample classification according to their geographical origin and excellent La Vera and Mallorca sample authentication were reached.

Volatilomics-Based Microbiome Evaluation of Fermented Dairy by Prototypic Headspace-Gas Chromatography–High-Temperature Ion Mobility Spectrometry (HS-GC-HTIMS) and Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NNMF)

Fermented foods, such as yogurt and kefir, contain a versatile spectrum of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including ethanol, acetic acid, ethyl acetate, and diacetyl. To overcome the challenge of overlapping peaks regarding these key compounds, the drift tube temperature was raised in a prototypic high-temperature ion mobility spectrometer (HTIMS). This HS-GC-HTIMS was used for the volatilomic profiling of 33 traditional kefir, 13 commercial kefir, and 15 commercial yogurt samples. Pattern recognition techniques, including principal component analysis (PCA) and NNMF, in combination with non-targeted screening, revealed distinct differences between traditional and commercial kefir while showing strong similarities between commercial kefir and yogurt. Classification of fermented dairy samples into commercial yogurt, commercial kefir, traditional mild kefir, and traditional tangy kefir was also possible for both PCA- and NNMF-based models, obtaining cross-validation (CV) error rates of 0% for PCA-LDA, PCA-kNN (k = 5), and NNMF-kNN (k = 5) and 3.3% for PCA-SVM and NNMF-LDA. Through back projection of NNMF loadings, characteristic substances were identified, indicating a mild flavor composition of commercial samples, with high concentrations of buttery-flavored diacetyl. In contrast, traditional kefir showed a diverse VOC profile with high amounts of flavorful alcohols (including ethanol and methyl-1-butanol), esters (including ethyl acetate and 3-methylbutyl acetate), and aldehydes. For validation of the results and deeper understanding, qPCR sequencing was used to evaluate the microbial consortia, confirming the microbial associations between commercial kefir and commercial yogurt and reinforcing the differences between traditional and commercial kefir. The diverse flavor profile of traditional kefir primarily results from the yeast consortium, while commercial kefir and yogurt is primarily, but not exclusively, produced through bacterial fermentation. The flavor profile of fermented dairy products may be used to directly evaluate the microbial consortium using HS-GC-HTIMS analysis.

Methodology for Analysis of Peptide Consumption by Yeast during Fermentation of Enzymatic Protein Hydrolysate Supplemented Synthetic Medium Using UPLC-IMS-HRMS

Several studies have shown the ability of yeast to consume peptides as a nitrogen source in single-peptide containing media. However, a suitable and cost-effective methodology to study the utilization of peptides by yeast and other microorganisms in a complex peptide mixture has yet to be put forward. This article addresses this issue by presenting a screening methodology for tracking the consumption of peptides by yeast during alcoholic fermentation. As a peptide source, the methodology makes use of an in-house prepared peptide-mapped bovine serum albumin (BSA) proteolytic digest, which was applied to a synthetic grape must. The peptide uptake was analyzed using high-throughput ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography coupled to data-independent acquisition-based ion mobility separation-enabled high-resolution mass spectrometry (UPLC-DIA-IMS-HRMS) analysis. The relative changes of abundance of 123 di- to hexapeptides were monitored and reported during fermentations with three commercial wine strains, demonstrating different uptake kinetics for individual peptides. Using the same peptide-mapped BSA hydrolysate, the applicability of an untargeted workflow was additionally assessed for peptide profiling in unelucidated matrixes. The comparison of the results from peptide mapping and untargeted analysis experiments highlighted the ability of untargeted analysis to consistently identify small molecular weight peptides on the length and amino acid composition. The proposed method, in combination with other analytical techniques, such as gene or protein expression analysis, can be a useful tool for different metabolic studies related to the consumption of complex nitrogen sources by yeast or other microorganisms.

Plants Metabolome Study: Emerging Tools and Techniques

Metabolomics is now considered a wide-ranging, sensitive and practical approach to acquire useful information on the composition of a metabolite pool present in any organism, including plants. Investigating metabolomic regulation in plants is essential to understand their adaptation, acclimation and defense responses to environmental stresses through the production of numerous metabolites. Moreover, metabolomics can be easily applied for the phenotyping of plants; and thus, it has great potential to be used in genome editing programs to develop superior next-generation crops. This review describes the recent analytical tools and techniques available to study plants metabolome, along with their significance of sample preparation using targeted and non-targeted methods. Advanced analytical tools, like gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography mass-spectroscopy (LC-MS), capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (CE-MS), fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance-mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) have speed up precise metabolic profiling in plants. Further, we provide a complete overview of bioinformatics tools and plant metabolome database that can be utilized to advance our knowledge to plant biology.

The EU-SENSE System for Chemical Hazards Detection, Identification, and Monitoring

Chemical reconnaissance, defined as hazards detection, identification, and monitoring, requires tools and solutions which provide reliable and precise data. In this field, the advances of artificial intelligence can be applied. This article aims to propose a novel approach for developing a chemical reconnaissance system that relies on machine learning, modelling algorithms, as well as the contaminant dispersion model to combine signals from different sensors and reduce false alarm rates. A case study of the European Union Horizon 2020 project–EU-SENSE is used and the main features of the system are analysed: heterogeneous sensor nodes components, chemical agents to be detected, and system architecture design. Through the proposed approach, chemical reconnaissance capabilities are improved, resulting in more effective crisis management. The idea for the system design can be used and developed in other areas, namely, in biological or radiological threat reconnaissance.

Changes in volatile organic compounds and lipid oxidation in traditional Chinese bacon during cold smoking

The smoking time of cold-smoked traditional Chinese bacon (TCB) in northeast Chongqing is not precisely controlled. In this study, the accumulation of, and changes in, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during smoking were investigated by gas chromatography–ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Simultaneously, the lipid oxidation and sensory attributes of TCB were assessed. Thirty-nine VOCs were identified in samples, most of which were alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and esters. Samples smoked for 12 and 15 days contained characteristic VOCs, mainly comprising phenols, esters, and heterocyclic compounds, which produce the flavor of mature TCB. Odorous substances other than characteristic VOCs reached their maximum or sub-maximum on day 12, which was consistent with the sensory assessment results. The peroxide value of TCB increased continuously with smoking; while 2-thiobarbituric acid reactive substances test (TBARS) values were at a lower level between days 9 and 12. Therefore, the recommended smoking time should be about 12 days.

Electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometer with new tristate ion gating for improved sensitivity for compounds with lower ion mobility

An electrospray is a dispersed nebula of charged droplets produced under the influence of a strong electric field. The charged droplets subsequently result in ions in the gas phase. Therefore, electrospray is a commonly used method for transferring liquids to the gas phase while ionizing its constituents at the same time. In this work, we investigate the performance of an electrospray ionization ion mobility spectrometer by varying the electric field strength in the desolvation region. In particular, we investigate a new tristate ion shutter with increased sensitivity for ions with higher molecular mass and lower ion mobility that are usually suppressed by classical Bradbury-Nielsen or Tyndall-Powell ion shutters when using short gating times as required for high resolving power. The electric field in the tristate ion shutter affects the optimal ratio of the electric field strengths in the drift and desolvation region. Furthermore, the solvent flow rate needs to be considered when setting the field strengths in the desolvation region. However, a higher electric field strength in the desolvation region affects the field at the emitter tip. For this reason, a smaller ratio of the drift field strength and the desolvation field strength is beneficial, especially since higher solvent flow rates require higher fields to initiate an electrospray. In this work, we use tetraoctylammonium bromide as an instrument standard and the fungicide metalaxyl, the herbicide isoproturon and the antibiotic cefuroxime as model compounds.

Data analysis strategies for the characterization of chemical contaminant mixtures. Fish as a case study

Thousands of chemicals are potentially contaminating the environment and food resources, covering a wide spectrum of molecular structures, physico-chemical properties, sources, environmental behavior and toxic profiles. Beyond the description of the individual chemicals, characterizing contaminant mixtures in related matrices has become a major challenge in ecological and human health risk assessments. Continuous analytical developments, in the fields of targeted (TA) and non-targeted analysis (NTA), have resulted in ever larger sets of data on associated chemical profiles. More than ever, the implementation of advanced data analysis strategies is essential to elucidate profiles and extract new knowledge from these large data sets. Specifically focusing on the data analysis step, this review summarizes the recent progress in integrating data analysis tools into TA and NTA workflows to address the challenging characterization of chemical mixtures in environmental and food matrices. As fish matrices are relevant in both aquatic pollution and consumer exposure perspectives, fish was chosen as the main theme to illustrate this review, although the present document is equally relevant to other food and environmental matrices. The key features of TA and NTA data sets were reviewed to illustrate the challenges associated with their analysis. Advanced filtering strategies to mine NTA data sets are presented, with a particular focus on chemical filters and discriminant analysis. Further, the applications of supervised and unsupervised multivariate analysis methods to characterize exposure to chemical mixtures, and their associated challenges, is discussed.

Non-Targeted Screening Approaches for Profiling of Volatile Organic Compounds Based on Gas Chromatography-Ion Mobility Spectroscopy (GC-IMS) and Machine Learning

Due to its high sensitivity and resolving power, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) is a powerful technique for the separation and sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds. It is a robust and easy-to-handle technique, which has recently gained attention for non-targeted screening (NTS) approaches. In this article, the general working principles of GC-IMS are presented. Next, the workflow for NTS using GC-IMS is described, including data acquisition, data processing and model building, model interpretation and complementary data analysis. A detailed overview of recent studies for NTS using GC-IMS is included, including several examples which have demonstrated GC-IMS to be an effective technique for various classification and quantification tasks. Lastly, a comparison of targeted and non-targeted strategies using GC-IMS are provided, highlighting the potential of GC-IMS in combination with NTS.

Characteristic volatile organic compounds in “HeTao” melon and other cultivars grown in Hetao region analyzed by HS-GC-IMS

The headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) was used to compare the volatile organic components of the Hetao melon and six other cultivars of melon grown in the Hetao region of China. The results showed that the common VOCs that could be qualitatively identified from the 7 different melon samples were 35 monomers and dimers of certain compounds, mainly including alcohols, esters, aldehydes, terpenes, acids and pyridines. Hexyl acetate, 3-methylbutyl acetate, ethyl acetate and ethyl formate were predominant VOCs in seven melon cultivars. Among them, Xizhoumi No. 25 (XZM25) had 3 unique volatile organic components: 3-methylbutanal, benzaldehyde and nonanal. Xizhoumi No. 17 (XZM17) had 3 unique volatile organic components: alpha-pinene, linalool and (E)-2-hexenol. Jinhongmi (JHM) had 1 unique volatile organic component: ethyl pentanoate. The Hetao melon (HLS) contained 3 unique volatile organic components: heptanal, 2-ethyl-6-methyl pyrazine and 3-methyl valeric acid. Yinmi (YM) had 2 unique volatile organic components: 3-methylbutanol and 1-butanol, and Huangjinmi (HJM) had 1 unique volatile organic component: limonene. YM, GMB2010, HLS and JHM were similar based on the principal component analysis. This research analyzed the flavor components of different melon cultivars grown in the Hetao region of China for the first time.

Performance Analysis of MAU-9 Electronic-Nose MOS Sensor Array Components and ANN Classification Methods for Discrimination of Herb and Fruit Essential Oils

The recent development of MAU-9 electronic sensory methods, based on artificial olfaction detection of volatile emissions using an experimental metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-type electronic-nose (e-nose) device, have provided novel means for the effective discovery of adulterated and counterfeit essential oil-based plant products sold in worldwide commercial markets. These new methods have the potential of facilitating enforcement of regulatory quality assurance (QA) for authentication of plant product genuineness and quality through rapid evaluation by volatile (aroma) emissions. The MAU-9 e-nose system was further evaluated using performance-analysis methods to determine ways for improving on overall system operation and effectiveness in discriminating and classifying volatile essential oils derived from fruit and herbal edible plants. Individual MOS-sensor components in the e-nose sensor array were performance tested for their effectiveness in contributing to discriminations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analyzed in headspace from purified essential oils using artificial neural network (ANN) classification. Two additional statistical data-analysis methods, including principal regression (PR) and partial least squares (PLS), were also compared. All statistical methods tested effectively classified essential oils with high accuracy. Aroma classification with PLS method using 2 optimal MOS sensors yielded much higher accuracy than using all nine sensors. The accuracy of 2-group and 6-group classifications of essentials oils by ANN was 100% and 98.9%, respectively.

Classification and Identification of Essential Oils from Herbs and Fruits Based on a MOS Electronic-Nose Technology

The frequent occurrence of adulterated or counterfeit plant products sold in worldwide commercial markets has created the necessity to validate the authenticity of natural plant-derived palatable products, based on product-label composition, to certify pricing values and for regulatory quality control (QC). The necessity to confirm product authenticity before marketing has required the need for rapid-sensing, electronic devices capable of quickly evaluating plant product quality by easily measurable volatile (aroma) emissions. An experimental MAU-9 electronic nose (e-nose) system, containing a sensor array with 9 metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors, was developed with capabilities to quickly identify and classify volatile essential oils derived from fruit and herbal edible-plant sources. The e-nose instrument was tested for efficacy to discriminate between different volatile essential oils present in gaseous emissions from purified sources of these natural food products. Several chemometric data-analysis methods, including pattern recognition algorithms, principal component analysis (PCA), and support vector machine (SVM) were utilized and compared. The classification accuracy of essential oils using PCA, LDA and QDA, and SVM methods was at or near 100%. The MAU-9 e-nose effectively distinguished between different purified essential oil aromas from herbal and fruit plant sources, based on unique e-nose sensor array responses to distinct, essential-oil specific mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

HS-GC-IMS with PCA to analyze volatile flavor compounds across different production stages of fermented soybean whey tofu

The variations in flavor substances across the different stages of fermented soybean whey tofu (FSWT) production were analyzed by headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) combined with principal component analysis (PCA). The results revealed 24 representative flavor compounds in the samples across all production stages. After heating, the signal intensity of hexanal, 1-octen-3-ol, heptanal, and (E)-2-hexenol, which are unpleasant flavor substances found in raw soymilk, weakened, whereas those of some aroma substances increased. Furthermore, fermented flavor compounds, namely, 2-heptanone, 2-pentylfuran, pentanal, and 2,3-butanedione, were produced after the addition of fermented soybean whey as a coagulant. A PCA based on the signal intensity of the detected volatile compounds revealed effective differentiation of samples from different stages into comparatively independent spaces. These results showed that the flavor fingerprints of the samples from different stages of FSWT production can be successfully built using HS-GC-IMS and PCA based on the detected volatile compounds.

Determination of volatile organic compounds by HS-GC-IMS to detect different stages of Aspergillus flavus infection in Xiang Ling walnut

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for evolution monitoring and early detection of Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus) contamination in walnuts. We successfully applied headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) to evaluate walnut VOC changes caused by A. flavus contamination. A total of 48 VOCs were identified in walnuts contaminated with A. flavus. After identification of VOCs, a heat map and principal component analysis (PCA) highlighted ethyl acetate-D, 3-methyl-2-butanol, and cyclohexanone as potential biomarkers specific to A. flavus contamination in walnuts. These results provided valid targets for the development of sensors to evaluate the early mold contamination in stored walnuts.

Onsite/on-field analysis of pesticide and veterinary drug residues by a state-of-art technology: A review

Pesticides and veterinary drugs are generally employed to control pests and insects in crop and livestock farming. However, remaining residues are considered potentially hazardous to human health and the environment. Therefore, regular monitoring is required for assessing and legislation of pesticides and veterinary drugs. Various approaches to determining residues in various agricultural and animal food products have been reported. Most analytical methods involve sample extraction, purification (cleanup), and detection. Traditional sample preparation is time-consuming labor-intensive, expensive, and requires a large amount of toxic organic solvent, along with high probability for the decomposition of a compound before the analysis. Thus, modern sample preparation techniques, such as the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe method, have been widely accepted in the scientific community for its versatile application; however, it still requires a laboratory setup for the extraction and purification processes, which also involves the utilization of a toxic solvent. Therefore, it is crucial to elucidate recent technologies that are simple, portable, green, quick, and cost-effective for onsite and infield residue detections. Several technologies, such as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, quantum dots, biosensing, and miniaturized gas chromatography, are now available. Further, several onsite techniques, such as ion mobility-mass spectrometry, are now being upgraded; some of them, although unable to analyze field sample directly, can analyze a large number of compounds within very short time (such as time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometry). Thus, to stay updated with scientific advances and analyze organic contaminants effectively and safely, it is necessary to study all of the state-of-art technology.

Ion Mobility–Mass Spectrometry for Bioanalysis

This paper aims to cover the main strategies based on ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) for the analysis of biological samples. The determination of endogenous and exogenous compounds in such samples is important for the understanding of the health status of individuals. For this reason, the development of new approaches that can be complementary to the ones already established (mainly based on liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry) is welcomed. In this regard, ion mobility spectrometry has appeared in the analytical scenario as a powerful technique for the separation and characterization of compounds based on their mobility. IMS has been used in several areas taking advantage of its orthogonality with other analytical separation techniques, such as liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, or supercritical fluid chromatography. Bioanalysis is not one of the areas where IMS has been more extensively applied. However, over the last years, the interest in using this approach for the analysis of biological samples has clearly increased. This paper introduces the reader to the principles controlling the separation in IMS and reviews recent applications using this technique in the field of bioanalysis.

Suitability of High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry for Routine Analysis of Small Molecules in Food, Feed and Water for Safety and Authenticity Purposes: A Review

During the last decade, food, feed and environmental analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry became increasingly popular. Recent accessibility and technological improvements of this system make it a potential tool for routine laboratory work. However, this kind of instrument is still often considered a research tool. The wide range of potential contaminants and residues that must be monitored, including pesticides, veterinary drugs and natural toxins, is steadily increasing. Thanks to full-scan analysis and the theoretically unlimited number of compounds that can be screened in a single analysis, high-resolution mass spectrometry is particularly well-suited for food, feed and water analysis. This review aims, through a series of relevant selected studies and developed methods dedicated to the different classes of contaminants and residues, to demonstrate that high-resolution mass spectrometry can reach detection levels in compliance with current legislation and is a versatile and appropriate tool for routine testing.

Flavor Changes of Tricholoma matsutake Singer under Different Processing Conditions by Using HS-GC-IMS

Headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) was used to analyze the changes to volatile compounds in fried Tricholoma matsutake Singer under different heating temperatures and times. A total of 40 signals that corresponded to 24 compounds were identified through this approach. Differences in volatile compounds of T. matsutake samples were shown in topographic plots and fingerprints. The heating temperatures were more important than the heating times in affecting the volatile compounds. Moreover, changes to the main volatile compounds in T. matsutake under different processing conditions were based on the thermal decomposition and a series of chemical reactions of C8 compounds. Principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that samples under different processing conditions could be effectively distinguished. Hence, the combination of HS-GC-IMS and PCA can identify and classify the volatile compounds of T. matsutake quickly and sensitively. This study provides a new supplementary analytical method for the rapid identification of T. matsutake. The above results can provide a theoretical basis for the quality control and change mechanism of flavor in the processing of traditional edible fungi products.

Analysis of volatile compounds and flavor fingerprint in Jingyuan lamb of different ages using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS)

In this study, gas chromatography coupled to an ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) was used for analyzing some volatile components and flavor fingerprint in samples from Jingyuan lambs of different ages (2, 6, and 12 months). The data obtained from ion mobility were processed using laboratory analysis view processing software for fingerprint recognition, and the principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. GC-IMS provided information on the characteristics and strength of 66 volatile flavor compounds (monomers and dimers). The differences in flavoring substances between lambs of different ages were observed. The compounds with higher intensity peaks in the lamb meat samples were alcohols (1-octen-3-ol, ethanol, (E)-2-hexen-1-ol, 1-pentanol, and 2-propanol), ketones (2-pentanone, 2-heptanone, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, 2-hexanone, 2-butanone, 2-propanone, and 4-methyl-2-pentanone), aldehydes (n-nonanal, octanal, heptanal, 3-methylbutanal, hexanal, pentanal, 2-methylbutanal, (E)-2-octenal, (E)-2-nonenal, methional, and phenylacetaldehyde), esters (methyl benzoate), furan (2-pentylfuran), and thiazole (trimethylthiazole). The results showed that the flavor fingerprint in samples from Jingyuan lambs of different ages (2, 6, and 12 months) can be established by GC-IMS and PCA based on the identified volatile compounds. This method might be used for the rapid and comprehensive analysis of volatile components in lamb meat.

Food safety and quality assessment: comprehensive review and recent trends in the applications of ion mobility spectrometry (IMS)

Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is an analytical separation and diagnostic technique that is simple and sensitive and a rapid response and low-priced technique for detecting trace levels of chemical compounds in different matrices. Chemical agents and environmental contaminants are successfully detected by IMS and have been recently considered to employ in food safety. In addition, IMS uses stand-alone or coupled analytical diagnostic tools with chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. Scientific publications show that IMS has been applied 21% in the pharmaceutical industry, 9% in environmental studies and 13% in quality control and food safety. Nevertheless, applications of IMS in food safety and quality analysis have not been adequately explored. This review presents the IMS-related analysis and focuses on the application of IMS in food safety and quality. This review presents the important topics including detection of traces of chemicals, rate of food spoilage and freshness, food adulteration and authenticity as well as natural toxins, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, veterinary, and growth promoter drug residues. Further, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), acrylamide, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), biogenic amines, nitrosamine, furfural, phenolic compounds, heavy metals, food packaging materials, melamine, and food additives were also examined for the first time. Therefore, it is logical to predict that the application of the IMS technique in food safety, food quality, and contaminant analysis will be impressively increased in the future. Towards a hand-held, fast, and sensitive gas chromatograph-ion mobility spectrometer for detecting volatile compounds

Ion mobility spectrometers can detect gaseous compounds at atmospheric pressure in the range of parts per trillion within a second. Due to their fast response times, high sensitivity, and limited instrumental effort, they are used in a variety of applications, especially as mobile or hand-held devices. However, most real-life samples are gas mixtures, which can pose a challenge for IMS with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mainly due to competing gas-phase ionization processes. Therefore, we present a miniaturized drift tube IMS coupled to a compact gas chromatograph for pre-separation, built of seven bundled standard GC columns (Rtx-Volatiles, Restek GmbH) with 250 μm ID and 1.07 m in length. Such pre-separation significantly reduces chemical cross sensitivities caused by competing gas-phase ionization processes and adds orthogonality. Our miniaturized GC-IMS system is characterized with alcohols, halocarbons, and ketones as model substances, reaching detection limits down to 70 pptv with IMS averaging times of just 125 ms. It separates test mixtures of ketones and halocarbons within 180 s and 50 s, respectively. The IMS has a short drift length of 40.6 mm and reaches a high resolving power of RP = 68.
