Rapid ultrasound-assisted magnetic microextraction of gallic acid from urine, plasma and water samples by HKUST-1-MOF-Fe3O4-GA-MIP-NPs: UV-vis detection and optimization study

Determination of Azole Fungicide Residues in Fresh Juice by Magnetic Solid Phase Extraction Based on Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al) Sorbent in Combination with High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph

In this work, a magnetic adsorption material based on metal-organic framework (Fe3O4@ZnAl-LDH@MIL-53(Al)) was synthesized and used as an adsorbent in the process of magnetic solid phase extraction. Then, a high-performance liquid chromatograph was used to quantitatively detect triazole fungicides in samples. In order to verify the successful preparation of the material, a series of characterization analyses were carried out. Besides, the key parameters that may affect the extraction efficiency have been optimized, and under optimal conditions the three triazole fungicides showed good linearity in the range of 10-1000 μg/L (R2 ≥ 0.9796); Limit of detections were ranged from 0.013 to 0.030 μg/mL. Finally, the established method was applied to the detection of triazole fungicides in four fresh juice samples. The results showed that the target analyte was not detected in all the test samples. By detecting the recoveries (73.3-104.3%) and coefficient variation (RSD ≤ 6.8%) of triazole fungicides in fortified samples, it proved that this established method meets the requirements of pesticide residue analysis and showed excellent application potential.

Polyethyleneimine in designed nanocomposite based magnetic halloysite nanotubes for extraction and determination of gallic acid in green tea

An innovative and simple nanocomposite denoted as MHNTs@PEI was synthesized for gallic acid (GA) analytical sample pretreatment. Polyethyleneimine (PEI) functionalized was binded onto magnetic halloysite nanotubes (MHNTs) to inhence adsorption capacity. MHNTs@PEI was obtained only through two steps modification (amination and PEI modification). Characterizations showed that there are layers of synthetic PEI on the tubular structure of the material and magnetic spheres on its surface, both indicating successful synthesis of the nanocomposite. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherms and kinetic modeling showed that the Langmuir model and pseudo-first-order model fit the adsorption data, respectively. MHNTs@PEI achieved an adsorption capacity of 158 mg·g-1. Overall, the abundant adsorption sites significantly improved the adsorption performance of the MHNTs@PEI. Regeneration tests demonstrated that the MHNTs@PEI exhibits effective adsorption, even after undergoing five consecutive cycles. Optimization of key parameters (ratio, volume of elution, elution time and frequency) in the process of adsorption and desorption was also conducted. The limit of detection (LOD) and that of the quantification (LOQ) were 0.19 and 0.63 μg·mL-1, respectively, and the recoveries were 95.67-99.43 %. Finally, the excellent magnetism (43.5 emu·g-1) and the adsorption feature of MHNTs@PEI enabled its successful utilization in analytical sample pretreatment through the extraction of GA from green tea.

SPE of gallic acid and ascorbic acid in fruits using polymerized deep eutectic solvent-modified substrate

Aim: Novel substrates were synthesized by porous and nonporous polymerization of deep eutectic solvents on magnetic silica nanoparticles and introduced for dispersive solid-phase extraction of two analytes. Materials & methods: The prepared substrates were characterized, and an extraction procedure was implemented to select the best substrates and eluent. The central composite design acted to optimize the effects of parameters that influenced the extraction efficiencies. Results: For gallic and ascorbic acids, the limits of detection were obtained at 0.136 and 0.165 μM, respectively, with linear ranges of 0.6-125.2 and 0.5-106.8 μM, respectively. Conclusion: The substrate produced good extractions even after being used three-times and was successfully applied for the analysis of real samples.

A modified strategy to improve the dissolution of flavonoids from Artemisiae Argyi Folium using ultrasonic-assisted enzyme-deep eutectic solvent system

In this study, enzyme-deep eutectic solvent-assisted ultrasonic extraction technique (EnDUE) was developed for the efficient dissolution of flavonoids from Artemisiae Argyi Folium. The extraction results of Artemisiae Argyi Folium flavonoids (quercetin, luteolin, and isorhamnetin) were used as indicators to investigate the influencing factors through single factor experiment, Placket-burman design, and Box-behnken design, so as to obtain satisfactory yields. After systematic optimization, the optimal conditions for extraction of the target flavonoids were: Choline chloride/1,4-butanediol with a water content of 25%, cellulase+pectinase with a concentration of 1.6%, solid-liquid ratio of 1/32 g/mL, pH of 4.2, ultrasonic frequency of 80 kHz, ultrasonic power of 160 W, ultrasonic temperature of 40 °C, and ultrasonic time of 25 min, respectively, which derived a total yield of 8.06 ± 0.29 mg/g. Compared with the reference techniques, the proposed EnDUE technique showed significant advantages in the yield and extraction efficiency of flavonoids. In addition, after preliminary purification, the Artemisiae Argyi Folium flavonoids showed good antioxidant activity. Deep eutectic solvent (DES) can degrade the cell wall components and increase the action site of enzyme, and enzyme can promote the penetration of DES into the cell wall matrix, which is mutually beneficial to the dissolution of intracellular components. Therefore, the extraction technique proposed in this work (EnDUE) greatly promotes the dissolution of flavonoids from Artemisiae Argyi Folium, and provides theoretical support for the further application of plant flavonoids.

A novel core-shell composite of PCN-222@MIPIL for ultrasensitive electrochemical sensing 4-nonylphenol

A novel core-shell composite of PCN-222 and molecularly imprinted poly (ionic liquid) (PCN-222@MIPIL) with high conductivity and selectivity was prepared for electrochemical sensing 4-nonylphenol (4-NP). The electrical conductivities of some MOFs including PCN-222, ZIF-8, NH₂-UIO-66, ZIF-67, and HKUST-1 were explored. The results indicated that PCN-222 had the highest conductivity and was then used as a novel imprinted support. PCN-222@MIPIL with core-shell and porous structure was synthesized using PCN-222 as support and 4-NP as template. The average pore volume of PCN-222@MIPIL was 0.085 m³ g^-1. In addition, the average pore width of PCN-222@MIPIL was from 1.1 to 2.7 nm. The electrochemical response for PCN-222@MIPIL sensor for 4-NP was 2.54, 2.14, and 4.24 times that of non-molecularly imprinted poly (ionic liquid) (PCN-222@NIPIL), PCN-222, and MIPIL sensors, respectively, which result from superior conductivity and imprinted recognition sites of PCN-222@MIPIL. The current response of PCN-222@MIPIL sensor to 4-NP concentration from 1 × 10^-4 to 10 μM presented an excellent linear relationship. The detection limit of 4-NP was 0.03 nM. The synergistic effect between the PCN-222 supporter with high conductivity, specific surface area and shell layer of surface MIPIL results in the outstanding performance of PCN-222@MIPIL. PCN-222@MIPIL sensor was adopted for detecting 4-NP in real samples and presented to be a reliable approach for determining 4-NP.

Highly efficient nanocomposites based on molecularly imprinted magnetic covalent organic frameworks for selective extraction of bisphenol A from liquid matrices

Highly efficient nanocomposites, hydrophobic molecularly imprinted magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MI-MCOF), have been farbricated by a facile Schiff-base reaction. The MI-MCOF was based on terephthalaldehyde (TPA) and 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl) benzene (TAPB) as functional monomer and crosslinker, anhydrous acetic acid as catalyst, bisphenol AF as dummy template, and NiFe₂O₄ as magnetic core. This organic framework significantly reduced the time consumption of conventional imprinted polymerization and avoided the use of traditional initiator and cross-linking agents. The synthesized MI-MCOF exhibited superior magnetic responsivity and affinity, as well as high selectivity and kinetics for bisphenol A (BPA) in water and urine samples. The equilibrium adsorption capacity (Q_e) of BPA on the MI-MCOF was 50.65 mg g^-1, which was 3-7-fold higher than of its three structural analogues. The imprinting factor of BPA reached up to 3.17, and the selective coefficients of three analogues were all > 2.0, evidencing the excellent selectivity of fabricated nanocomposites to BPA. Based on the MI-MCOF nanocomposites, the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE), combined with HPLC and fluorescence detection (HPLC-FLD), offered superior analytical performance: wide linear range of 0.1-100 μg L^-1, high correlation coefficient of 0.9996, low limit of detection of 0.020 μg L^-1, good recoveries of 83.5-110%, and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.5-5.7% in environmental water, beverage, and human urine samples. Consequently, the MI-MCOF-MSPE/HPLC-FLD method provides a good prospect in selective extraction of BPA from complex matrices while replacing traditional magnetic separation and adsorption materials.

A Z-scheme CdS/Ag3PO4 catalyst: Characterization, experimental design and mechanism consideration for methylene blue

Due to the explosive use of Azo dyes in various industries such as textiles, discharging these industrial effluents into the environment critically polluted water supplies. Accordingly, constructing/developing novel binary catalysts to diminish the pollution extent of such effluents before discharging into environment is an excellent issue in environmental chemistry. Here, a binary CdS/ Ag₃PO₄ was constructed, and its boosted photocatalytic activity was proven against methylene blue (MB), as a model dye pollutant. The Wurtzite CdS and Ag₃PO₄ cubic crystal nanoparticles were synthesized and coupled mechanically. The binary sample's lowest photoluminescence (PL) results confirm a higher e/h separation. DRS results confirmed a decreased energy gap for the coupled system. The semiconductors' VB and CV potentials were calculated and used for constructing of Z-scheme mechanism. The photocatalytic activity was followed via an experimental design approach. The model F-value of 89.75 > F_0.05,14,13 = 2.42 and LOF F-value of 6.57 < F_{0.05,10, 3} = 8.79 reveal that the model well processed data. The optimal run conditions were CMB: 5 ppm, Catalyst dose: 1 g/L, pH: 3.25, and irradiation time: 139 min, at which 85% of MB molecules were degraded. Based on the trend of ascorbic acid > isopropanol > formic acid ≈ nitrate obtained for the scavengers' importance in decreasing the photocatalyst activity, superoxide radicals had the highest effect in MB degradation and then ^•OH. The results showed the direct Z-scheme has the main effect on MB degradation by the binary sample.

Design of an S-scheme photo-catalyst utilizing a Cu-doped perovskite and MOF-5 for simultaneous degradation of organic pollutants under LED light irradiation: Application of EXRSM method for spectra separation and BBD-RSM modeling

Heterojunction photo-catalysts have attracted significant attention in solar energy conversion due to their ability to reduce suppressing electron-hole pairs and improve catalytic capability. Herein, we designed an S-scheme photo-catalyst by encapsulating a Cu-doped perovskite inside the pores of MOF-5 for the first time, exhibiting excellent efficiency in a pollutant degradation process. The pristine MOF cannot act in the visible light region because of its wide bandgap. However, the encapsulation modified its bandgap and but also increased its photo-catalytic activity. Simultaneous photo-degradation of two organic contaminants, methylene blue (MB) and paracetamol (PA), was investigated to evaluate the catalytic activity of this composite. As a challenge, the UV-vis spectra of PA strongly overlapped with MB in a binary mixture preventing direct measurement of its concentration without previous separation via conventional methodologies. Hence, we used a simple and fast technique called the extended ratio subtraction method (EXRSM) to separate their absorption spectra. The statistical investigations established that it could resolve the issue of signal overlapping. Also, a statistical approach, Box-Behnken (BBD-RSM), was used to model and optimize the degradation process providing a better way to explain the effect and interactions of main parameters on degradation efficiency. Now, an empirical model for each pollutant can make a relationship between them. The photo-degradation yield was obtained at 67.12% and 87.96% for PA and MB, respectively, under optimum conditions. Furthermore, the kinetics and mechanism of reaction were investigated, and the results revealed that it follows a pseudo-first-order model for each pollutant.

Recent molecularly imprinted polymers applications in bioanalysis

Molecular imprinted polymers (MIPs) as extraordinary compounds with unique features have presented a wide range of applications and benefits to researchers. In particular when used as a sorbent in sample preparation methods for the analysis of biological samples and complex matrices. Its application in the extraction of medicinal species has attracted much attention and a growing interest. This review focus on articles and research that deals with the application of MIPs in the analysis of components such as biomarkers, drugs, hormones, blockers and inhibitors, especially in biological matrices. The studies based on MIP applications in bioanalysis and the deployment of MIPs in high-throughput settings and optimization of extraction methods are presented. A review of more than 200 articles and research works clearly shows that the superiority of MIP techniques lies in high accuracy, reproducibility, sensitivity, speed and cost effectiveness which make them suitable for clinical usage. Furthermore, this review present MIP-based extraction techniques and MIP-biosensors which are categorized on their classes based on common properties of target components. Extraction methods, studied sample matrices, target analytes, analytical techniques and their results for each study are described. Investigations indicate satisfactory results using MIP-based bioanalysis. According to the increasing number of studies on method development over the last decade, the use of MIPs in bioanalysis is growing and will further expand the scope of MIP applications for less studied samples and analytes.

The Use of Computational Methods for the Development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand-molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field.

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Dispersive (Micro)Solid Phase Extraction: A Review

The review describes the development of batch solid phase extraction procedures based on dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) and magnetic MIPs (MMIPs). Advantages and disadvantages of the various MIPs for dispersive solid phase extraction and dispersive (micro)solid phase extraction are discussed. In addition, an effort has also been made to condense the information regarding MMIPs since there are a great variety of supports (magnetite and magnetite composites with carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, or organic metal framework) and magnetite surface functionalization mechanisms for enhancing MIP synthesis, including reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization. Finally, drawbacks and future prospects for improving molecularly imprinted (micro)solid phase extraction (MIMSPE) are also appraised.

Surface molecularly imprinted magnetic MOFs: A novel platform coupled with magneto electrode for high throughput electrochemical sensing analysis of oxytetracycline in foods

In order to solve inherent problems of traditional molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors (MIECS), a novel platform of surface molecularly imprinted magnetic metal-organic frameworks (mMOFs@MIPs) was coupled with magneto electrode to establish magnetic MIECS for the recognition of oxytetracycline (OTC). mMOFs@MIPs were synthesized using layer-by-layer modification method for the recognition of OTC. With the help of magneto electrodes, mMOFs@MIPs can be magnetically modified on the electrode surface, forming the electrochemical sensing interface. The imprinted cavities of mMOFs@MIPs can act as the electron channel of the probe to realize label-free detection of OTC. A linear response was obtained within the OTC concentration range of 1.0 × 10^-9 g mL^-1-1.0 × 10^-4 g mL^-1. The applicability of the sensor was estimated using the spiking and recovery method in milk samples with the recoveries ranging from 89.0% to 103.1%. It has potential applications in food safety analysis with high throughput detection capability, high specificity and good stability.

Magnetic Nanoparticle Composites: Synergistic Effects and Applications

Composite materials are made from two or more constituent materials with distinct physical or chemical properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics which are at least to some degree different from its individual components. Nanocomposite materials are composed of different materials of which at least one has nanoscale dimensions. Common types of nanocomposites consist of a combination of two different elements, with a nanoparticle that is linked to, or surrounded by, another organic or inorganic material, for example in a core-shell or heterostructure configuration. A general family of nanoparticle composites concerns the coating of a nanoscale material by a polymer, SiO2 or carbon. Other materials, such as graphene or graphene oxide (GO), are used as supports forming composites when nanoscale materials are deposited onto them. In this Review we focus on magnetic nanocomposites, describing their synthetic methods, physical properties and applications. Several types of nanocomposites are presented, according to their composition, morphology or surface functionalization. Their applications are largely due to the synergistic effects that appear thanks to the co-existence of two different materials and to their interface, resulting in properties often better than those of their single-phase components. Applications discussed concern magnetically separable catalysts, water treatment, diagnostics-sensing and biomedicine.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Bioanalysis: Extraction of Small Organic Molecules

The quantitative determination of xenobiotic compounds, as well as biotics in biological matrices, is generally described with the term bioanalysis. Due to the complexity of biofluids, in combination with the low concentration of the small molecules, their determination in biological matrices is a challenging procedure. Apart from the conventional solid-phase extraction, liquid-liquid extraction, protein precipitation, and direct injection approaches, nowadays, a plethora of microextraction and miniaturized extraction techniques have been reported. Furthermore, the development and evaluation of novel extraction adsorbents for sample preparation has become a popular research field. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials composed of metal ions or clusters in coordination with organic linkers. Unequivocally, MOFs are gaining more and more attention in analytical chemistry due to their superior properties, including high surface area and tunability of pore size and functionality. This review discusses the utilization of MOFs in the sample preparation of biological samples for the green extraction of small organic molecules. Their common preparation and characterization strategies are discussed, while emphasis is given to their applications for green sample preparation.

Optimization of green and rapid analytical procedure for the extraction of patulin in fruit juice and dried fruit samples by air-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent-based solidified homogeneous liquid phase microextraction using experimental design and computational chemistry approach

In this paper, a green and inexpensive air-assisted natural deep eutectic solvent-based solidified homogeneous liquid phase microextraction procedure was optimized for extraction of patulin in fruit juice and dried fruit samples using experimental design prior to its spectrophotometric determination. Four different natural deep eutectic solvent were prepared and applied to ensure efficient, and selective extraction of patulin. The significant variables including Zn(II) amount, cooling time, pH and amount of natural deep eutectic solvent were optimized by using central composite design. Under optimized conditions, working range was 10-750 μg L^-1 with 0.9996 of correlation coefficient. Detection limit and preconcentration factor were 3.5 μg L^-1 and 150, respectively. The repeatability and reproducibility precision were in the range of 3.2-4.6% and 4.3-5.6% respectively. Recoveries ranging from 94% to 104% proved the accuracy of the method. The optimized method was successfully applied to the extraction and identification of patulin in the selected samples.

Application of magnetic nanomaterials in bioanalysis

The importance of magnetic nanomaterials and magnetic hybrid materials, which are classified as new generation materials, in analytical applications is increasingly understood, and research on the adaptation of these materials to analytical methods has gained momentum. Development of sample preparation techniques and sensor systems using magnetic nanomaterials for the analysis of inorganic, organic and biomolecules in biological samples, which are among the samples that analytical chemists work on most, are among the priority issues. Therefore in this review, we focused on the use of magnetic nanomaterials for the bioanalytical applications including inorganic and organic species and biomolecules in different biological samples such as primarily blood, serum, plasma, tissue extracts, urine and milk. We summarized recent progresses, prevailing techniques, applied formats, and future trends in sample preparation-analysis methods and sensors based on magnetic nanomaterials (Mag-NMs). First, we provided a brief introduction of magnetic nanomaterials, especially their magnetic properties that can be utilized for bioanalytical applications. Second, we discussed the synthesis of these Mag-NMs. Third, we reviewed recent advances in bioanalytical applications of the Mag-NMs in different formats. Finally, recently literature studies on the relevance of Mag-NMs for bioanalysis applications were presented.

Ultrasound wave assisted removal of Ceftriaxone sodium in aqueous media with novel nano composite g-C3N4/MWCNT/Bi2WO6 based on CCD-RSM model

The aim of this study was ultrasound assisted removal of Ceftriaxone sodium (CS) based on CCD model. Using sonochemical synthesized Bi₂WO₆ implanted on graphitic carbon nitride/Multiwall carbon nanotube (g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆). For this purpose g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆ was synthesized and characterized using diverse approaches including XRD, FE-SEM, XPS, EDS, HRTEM, FT-IR. Then, the contribution of conventional variables including pH, CS concentration, adsorbent dosage and ultrasound contact time were studied by central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). ANOVA was employed to the variable factors, and the most desirable operational conditions mass provided. Drug adsorption yield of 98.85% obtained under these defined conditions. Through conducting five experiments, the proper prediction of the optimum point were examined. The respective results showed that RSD% was lower than 5% while the t-test confirmed the high quality of fitting. Langmuir isotherm equation fits the experimental data best and the removal followed pseudo-second order kinetics. The estimation of the experimentally obtained maximum adsorption capacities was 19.57 mg.g^- of g-C₃N₄/MWCNT/Bi₂WO₆ for CS. Boundary layer diffusion explained the mechanism of removal via intraparticle diffusion.

Recent applications of magnetic solid phase extraction in sample preparation for phytochemical analysis

Sample preparation such as isolation and pre-concentration is a crucial step for the phytochemical analysis. Magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) has received considerable attention, mainly due to its phase separation more conveniently by facile magnetic decantation as compared to traditional SPE. This review focused on the recent applications of MSPE in sample preparation for the analysis of phytochemical compounds in plants, biological samples and Chinese herbal preparations. In addition, the enzymes immobilized on the magnetic materials and used for the biospecific extraction of enzyme inhibitors were also discussed. The information summarized in this article may provide a reference to the further applications of MSPE in phytochemical analysis.

Magnetically controlled colorimetric aptasensor for chlorpyrifos based on copper-based metal-organic framework nanoparticles with peroxidase mimetic property

The fabrication of a magnetically controlled colorimetric aptasensor for chlorpyrifos is reported. The aptasensor was fabricated by the attachment of the colorimetric labels onto the magnetic carrier due to the hybridization reaction between the complementary DNA and aptamer. Chlorpyrifos detection was realized by monitoring the color changes of the TMB/H₂O₂ solution before and after incubation of the aptasensor with chlorpyrifos via exposure to external magnetic force. The color change was monitored at 650 nm by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Under the optimal conditions, this magnetically controlled Cu-MOF-based aptasensor showed a detection limit of 4.4 ng/mL with a linear range of 0-1250 ng/mL. The colorimetric aptasensor displayed high selectivity for chlorpyrifos toward other interfering pesticides. The aptasensor was successfully applied for the spiked test of chlorpyrifos in fruits and vegetable samples with good recovery, which were in agreement with data obtained by GC-MS analysis. This magnetically controlled Cu-MOF-based sensing strategy not only leads to development of efficient and facile phase separation, but also expands the MOF's target scope from H₂O₂ or glucose to pesticides. Selective separation and purification of polydatin by molecularly imprinted polymers from the extract of Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix, rats' plasma and urine

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) based on polydatin were prepared by precipitation polymerization method. Synthesis process of MIPs was optimized by discussion of functional monomers, porogens and the molar ratio of template- functional monomer-cross linker. Then, MIPs were prepared with polydatin as the template, 4-vinyl pyridine as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethyl acrylate as the cross linker, acetonitrile as the porogen and the molar ratio of template-monomer-cross linker at 1:10:20. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer were used to inspect macroscale and chemical bond of MIPs. Adsorption capability and selectivity of MIPs to polydatin were investigated by carrying out the static, dynamic and selective experiments. The results showed MIPs performed high adsorption ability and selectivity to polydatin, indicating MIPs could be used to separate and enrich polydatin from the complex systems. Finally, MIPs were applied as the adsorbent for isolation and purification of polydatin from the extract of Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix, rats' plasma and urine samples. MIPs were successfully used to separate polydatin from the Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma et Radix and recovery ranged from 89.2% to 91.6%. The maximum concentration of polydatin in rats' plasma and urine samples was 2.84 ± 0.0748 µg mL^-1 and 2.64 ± 0.485 µg mL^-1, respectively. Moreover, to compare with the MIPs method, organic solvent methods were used to analyze the polydatin in rats' plasma and urine samples. The results illustrated MIPs method was effective and selective for enrichment of polydatin from the medicinal plants and biological samples.

Facile potentiometric sensing of gallic acid in edible plants based on molecularly imprinted polymer

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have become a valuable material in the field of electrochemical sensors, due to their selective recognition capabilities towards target molecules. A low-cost potentiometric sensor based on molecular imprinting was developed for the measurement of gallic acid (GA) in edible plants. The imprinted polymer was synthesized by bulk polymerization in the presence of trimethylolpropane triacrylate as the cross-linker and 2,2'-azo-bisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. The sensing component of the sensor was fabricated by the incorporation of MIPs in a polyvinyl chloride matrix. The species and amount of MIPs were optimized, and the imprinted poly(methacrylic acid) sensor was examined and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and potential response. The proposed sensor exhibited a fast near-Nernst response to GA in the range of 1 × 10^-5 to 3.2 × 10^-4 mol/L. The potentiometric measurement of GA in edible plants was checked by high-performance liquid chromatography, and the two test results showed no significant difference (P > 0.05). The imprinted sensor is applicable to the electrochemical determination of GA in edible plants. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The proposed MIP-based potentiometric sensor provided a low-cost, efficient, and green tool for the rapid determination of the bioactive ingredient GA in edible plants. The knowledge obtained will offer useful reference to the quality control and bioactive assessment of botanical food.

MOFs for the treatment of arsenic, fluoride and iron contaminated drinking water: A review

Over the last few decades, the global pollution of surface and groundwater poses a serious threat not only to human beings but also towards aquatic lives due to the presence of emerging contaminants. Among the others, the presence of arsenic, fluoride, and iron are considered as the most common toxic pollutants in water bodies. The emergence of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with high porosity and surface area is represented as significant inclusion into the era of entrapping contaminants present in drinking water. In the present review article, an in-depth insight is provided on the recent developments in the removal of arsenic, fluoride, and iron from drinking water using MOFs. Various aspects related to the synthesis, latest technologies adopted for the modifications in the synthesis process and advanced applications of MOFs for the removal of such contaminants are explicitly discussed. A detailed insight was provided to understand the mechanism of various interactions of MOFs with arsenic and fluoride. With respect to arsenic, fluoride, and iron removal the ultrastructural morphology of MOFs is assessed based on different molecular arrangements. Further, commercial aspects of various MOFs are presented in order to highlight the process feasibility. Finally, various perspectives and challenges involved in process scale up are comprehensively narrated with an aspiration of futuristic developments. The paper will be beneficial to the readers for acquiring a piece of in-depth knowledge on MOFs and its various synthesis approaches along with remarkable achievements for the removal of arsenic, fluoride, and iron from contaminated drinking water.

Magnetic nanoparticles assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction of chloramphenicol in water samples

This work describes the development of a new methodology based on magnetic nanoparticles assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME-MNPs) for preconcentration and extraction of chloramphenicol (CAP) antibiotic residues in water. The approach is based on the use of decanoic acid as the extraction solvent followed by the application of MNPs to magnetically retrieve the extraction solvent containing the extracted CAP. The coated MNPs were then desorbed with methanol, and the clean extract was analysed using ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. Several important parameters, such as the amount of decanoic acid, extraction time, stirring rate, amount of MNPs, type of desorption solvent, salt addition and sample pH, were evaluated and optimized. Optimum parameters were as follows: amount of decanoic acid: 200 mg; extraction time: 10 min; stirring rate: 800 rpm; amount of MNPs: 60 mg; desorption solvent: methanol; salt: 10%; and sample pH, 8. Under the optimum conditions, the method demonstrated acceptable linearity (R ² = 0.9933) over a concentration range of 50-1000 µg l^-1. Limit of detection and limit of quantification were 16.5 and 50.0 µg l^-1, respectively. Good analyte recovery (91-92.7%) and acceptable precision with good relative standard deviations (0.45-6.29%, n = 3) were obtained. The method was successfully applied to tap water and lake water samples. The proposed method is rapid, simple, reliable and environmentally friendly for the detection of CAP.

Magnetic metal organic framework for pre-concentration of ampicillin from cow milk samples

The aim of this study is a present of a simple solvothermal synthesis approach to preparation of Cu-based magnetic metal organic framework (MMOF) and subsequently its application as sorbent for ultrasound assisted magnetic solid phase extraction (UAMSPE) of ampicillin (AMP) from cow milk samples prior to high performance liquid chromatography-Ultraviolet (HPLC-UV) determination. Characteristics of prepared MMOF were fully investigated by different techniques which showed the exclusive properties of proposed sorbent in terms of proper functionality, desirable magnetic property and also high specific surface area. Different influential factors on extraction recovery including sorbent dosage, ultrasonic time, washing solvent volume and eluent solvent volume were assessed using central composite design (CCD) based response surface methodology (RSM) as an operative and powerful optimization tool. This is the first report for determination of AMP using MMOF. The proposed method addressed some drawbacks of other methods and sorbents for determination of AMP. The presented method decreases the extraction time (4 min) and also enhances adsorption capacity (250 mg/g). Moreover, the magnetic property of presented sorbent (15 emu/g) accelerates the extraction process which does not need filtration, centrifuge and precipitation procedures. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed method is applicable for linear range of 1.0–5000.0 μg/L with detection limit of 0.29 μg/L, satisfactory recoveries (≥95.0%) and acceptable repeatability (RSD less than 4.0%). The present study indicates highly promising perspectives of MMOF for highly effective analysis of AMP in complicated matrices.

Colorimetric determination of F-, Br- and I- ions by Ehrlich's bio-reagent oxidation over enzyme mimic like gold nanoparticles: Peroxidase-like activity and multivariate optimization

Citrate and polyvinyl alcohol capped gold nanoparticles (PVA-GNPs) were synthesized via chemical reduction technique and fully characterized by DLS, SEM, EDS, XRD, UV-Vis and FT-IR analysis. A simple and practical colorimetric sensor based on red-ox reaction of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DABA) as ehrlich's bio-reagent and Au(III) with H₂O₂ on PVA-GNPs mimic catalyst with enzyme-like activity, has been fabricated for determination of F^-, Br^- and I^- halide anions. Prepared PVA-GNPs, can simultaneously catalyze the disintegration of H₂O₂, that used to reduce Au(III) ions into co-doped Au-NPs and oxidation of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent while in the presence of halide ions Au-X complex can be formed and improved sensor selectivity. Halide ions (F^-, Br^- and I^-) effectively diminishes the catalytic activity of GNPs to disintegrate oxygenated water by the interaction among Au⁺ and Au⁰ and suppressing oxidation of p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent. In this system which contains PVA-GNPs, H₂O₂, p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde ehrlich's bio-reagent, and Au(III), increasing the halide ions (F^-, Br^- and I^-) concentration show color changes from deep green to red. In view of this rule, in this work, a novel colorimetric technique for sensitive determination of F^-, Br^- and I^- was developed. This method has the detection limits of 2.60 × 10^-6 M, 6.64 × 10^-8 M and 9.93 × 10^-9 M and linear ranges between 1.98 × 10^-5-1.22 × 10^-3 M, 1.99 × 10^-6-2.0 × 10^-4 M and 1.07 × 10^-7- 2.86 × 10^-5 M for F^-, Br^- and I^-, respectively. Assays are highly selective over other ions. They effectively applied to detection of halide ions in real water samples.

Synthesis and application of magnetic-surfaced pseudo molecularly imprinted polymers for zearalenone pretreatment in cereal samples

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a fungal contaminant widely found in grains. In cereal samples, trace zearalenone was extracted and enriched using magnetic-surfaced pseudo molecularly imprinted polymers (SPMIPs) and detected. SPMIPs were prepared with Fe₃O₄ as the magnetic core, modified halloysites nanotubes as supporting materials, and selective imprinted polymers as shells. Vinyl was modified on the surface of halloysites nanotube. SPMIPs were synthesized with pseudo templates. SPMIPs as the adsorbent of dispersed-solid phase extraction (μ-SPE) were used to purify and enrich ZEA from maize samples. After optimized, the pretreatment method was evaluated. The linearity of the method was ranged within 10-200 ng mL^-1. LOD and LOQ were 2.5 ng mL^-1 and 8 ng mL^-1 respectively. The ZEA spiking recoveries in maize samples ranged within 74.95-88.41% were with good RSDs lower than 4.25%. The developed method was successful applied in maize, oat, and wheat sample treatments and compared.

A restricted access molecularly imprinted polymer coating on metal–organic frameworks for solid-phase extraction of ofloxacin and enrofloxacin from bovine serum

A restricted access molecularly imprinted polymer (RAMIP) crosslinked with bovine serum albumin (BSA) was prepared on the surface of the mesoporous UiO-66-NH₂ metal–organic framework (MOF). The surface morphology, imprinting behavior, and protein exclusion properties of UiO-66-NH₂@RAMIP@BSA were investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity was 50.55 mg g⁻¹ for ofloxacin, with a 99.4% protein exclusion rate. Adsorption equilibrium was reached in 9 min. Combined with RP-HPLC, a solid-phase extraction column filled with UiO-66-NH₂@RAMIP@BSA was used to selectively enrich and analyze ofloxacin and enrofloxacin antibiotics from bovine serum with recoveries of 93.7–104.2% with relative standard deviations of 2.0–4.5% (n = 3). The linear range and the limit of detection were 0.1–100 μg mL⁻¹ and 15.6 ng mL⁻¹, respectively. These results suggest that UiO-66-NH₂@RAMIP@BSA is an efficient pretreatment adsorbent for biological sample analysis.

Tailoring of the electronic property of Zn-BTC metal–organic framework via ligand functionalization: an ab initio investigation

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials of recent interest due to their promising properties for technological applications. In this paper, the structure–property relationships of pristine and functionalized Zn-BTC (Zn₃(BTC)₂) MOFs are investigated. The results based on density functional theory (DFT) find that MOFs with coordinatively saturated secondary building units (SBU) are metallic, and MOFs with coordinatively unsaturated SBU are semi-conducting. The ligand functionalization with electron acceptor (cyano-) and electron donor (amino-) groups appears to tailor the electronic properties of Zn-BTC MOFs; amino-functionalization led to a significant upward shift of the band-edges whereas cyano-functionalization yields shifting of band-edges in the opposite direction, which led to a narrowing of the band gap. Modifying the electronic properties through such ligand functionalization design principles can be useful in engineering MOFs for gas sensing and device applications.
