Utilisation of ultrasonic treatment to improve the soil amelioration property of coal fly ash

Environment-friendly disposal of coal fly ash (CFA) is essential for sustainable development and cleaner production of electricity in thermal power plants. Although CFA has been employed for soil amelioration, direct application of CFA to soil may pose risks such as heavy metal contamination. This study investigated recycling of CFA through a novel method, which employs the ultrasonic treatment of CFA before its application. Physico-chemical properties of refuse dump soil and CFA were analysed. Subsequently, the effect of ultrasonic treatment on the physico-chemical properties of CFA was investigated. Different ultrasonic parameters (ultrasonic frequency, time interval, and temperature) were studied using response surface methodology. Finally, plant growth experiments were conducted to verify the feasibility of using ultrasonically treated CFA (UTCFA) for soil amelioration. The results show that untreated CFA cannot be used for soil amelioration due to its unsuitable high pH (10.20) and threatening concentrations of trace elements (6.80 mg/kg for Cadmium and 109.75 mg/kg for Arsenic). Ultrasonic treatment increases the soil amelioration properties of CFA by decreasing pH (to 8.50-9.20), decreasing concentrations of Cadmium and Arsenic (satisfying GB 15618-2018), and improving the water-holding capacity of CFA (reducing water loss). Plant indicators confirm the feasibility of using UTCFA for soil amelioration and suggest that the optimum UTCFA proportion is 20%. This study is a benchmark for the utilisation of ultrasonic treatment to improve the soil amelioration properties of CFA.

Removal and Extraction of Carboxylic Acids and Non-ionic Compounds with Simple Hydroxides and Layered Double Hydroxides

Carboxylic acids are an important natural component as a final product or intermediates for syntheses. They are produced in plants, animals and also as products from biotechnological processes. This review presents the use of single hydroxide particles and layered double hydroxides as alternative adsorbents to remove carboxylic acids from liquid media. The proposal to use hydroxide particles is based on its affinity to adsorb or intercalate carboxylic acids. Besides, the change in properties of the adsorbate-sorbate product evinces that this intermediate can be used as a vehicle to transport and release carboxylic acids. Additional examples will also be presented to prove that layered hydroxides are capable of removing non-ionic compounds from wine, milk and tomato. The use of layered compounds to remove active ingredients could reduce the number of separations steps, costs and reduce or eliminate solvents, thus encouraging the design of industrial processes of separation using hydroxides particles.

Physicochemical and sensory profile of Beauregard sweet potato beer

Beer has been one of the most consumed alcoholic beverages worldwide. However, the incorporation of adjuncts in the beer can add new organoleptic and functional characteristics to the beverage. For this, Beauregard sweet potato shows high potential due to being a rich source of starch and many bioactive compounds. The aim of this study was to develop the best process condition to produce a Sweet potato beer with enhanced nutritional and antioxidant properties and good sensory characteristics. Beer samples showed increased antioxidant activity especially due to β-carotene and their total phenolic content. The phytochemical profile of sweet potato biocompounds demonstrated a direct effect of this adjunct on sensory and functional characteristics of the finished beer. In conclusion, it was found that Beauregard sweet potato is a promising adjunct for beer brewing with nutraceutical properties due to its rich composition of bioactive compounds.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of porphyrin conjugated microporous polymers for microextraction of volatile organic acids in tobaccos

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) with permanent microporosity and extended p-conjugated skeletons have recently shown the fascinating application in separation and enrichment. In this report, porphyrin CMP that possessed microporous structure and nitrogen-rich pyrrole building blocks was successfully synthesized by microwave-assisted method. Then, a novel coating based on porphyrin CMP was fabricated on silica fiber for efficient enrichment volatile organic acids (VOAs). The simulation showed the coating exhibited strong interaction with volatile organic acids based on charge transfer interaction, hydrogen bond and size effect. Hence, we proposed a method for determination of volatile organic acids in tobaccos by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) with porphyrin CMP coating by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that the coating provided high enrichment factors for VOAs ranging from 66,657 to 133,970 and low limits of detection from 4.6 to 22 ng/L. A good linearity was observed for propionic acid and crotonic acid ranging from 0.050 to 8.0 μg/L, 2-methylheptanoic acid ranging from 0.063 to 1.5 μg/L, others ranging from 0.025 to 3.0 μg/L with the determination coefficient (R2) between 0.9900 and 0.9980. The strategy for determination of volatile compounds in complex solid samples was successfully applied to the analysis of volatile organic acids in tobacco leaves. The results showed that the method was accurate and reliable.

Ultrasound-assisted synthesis of NiFe- layered double hydroxides as efficient electrode materials in supercapacitors

Under ultrasound irradiation, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanostructures with three molar ratios and three dissimilar reaction times were prepared. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were employed to characterize the synthesized nanomaterials. Using a sonochemichal route, various morphologies of the NiFe-LDH nanostructures without any impurity and variations in the structure were produced. During the optimization process, it was found that sonication time and reagent concentration in a fixed irradiation frequency can affect the size and the morphology of the produced nanostructures. Under ultrasound irradiation, non-aggregated particles with uniform, spherical morphology were obtained with molar ratios of 4:1 (Ni:Fe) with 45 W at 180 min. The NiFe-LDH samples were observed to be supercapacitor under a 6 M KOH solution. When morphologically-controlled NiFe-LDH samples were used, the pseudo-capacitive behavior of the nanostructures was tuned. After 3 h of ultrasonic irradiation, the optimized sample (NiFe-LDH spherical nanostructures with 4:1 M ratio) had a high value of specific capacitance (168F g^-1).

Ultrasonically synthesis of Mn- and Cu- @ ZnS-NPs-AC based ultrasound assisted extraction procedure and validation of a spectrophotometric method for a rapid preconcentration of Allura Red AC (E129) in food and water samples

This study is devoted on Allura Red as food colorant preconcentration and determination in beverage, fruit juice and drink water samples is based on usage of Mn- and Cu- @ ZnS-NPs-AC as new sorbent for ultrasound-assisted-dispersive solid-phase microextraction (UA-DSPME) combined with ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometric based method (UV-Vis). Contribution of volume of eluent, pH, sorbent mass and sonication time on response following conduction of 28 experiments were optimized and investigated while their significantly justified according to p-value. Values of "Prob > F" less than 0.0500 is proportional with their significant influence on recovery of analyte. Under the optimum conditions 0.14 mL of THF; pH of 2.5; 8 mg of sorbent and 3 min sonication time guide and help achievement of limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) of 6.08 and 20.26 ng mL^-1, respectively. The accuracy of method was validated according to calculation of recovery following spiking 400 and 600 ng mL^-1 to blank solution and recovery as more reliable indication of accuracy 93.41 and 102.17% recoveries with RSD < 3.5%, which demonstrate the successful applicability of present method for real sample analysis. The maximum sorbent capacity was 50.0 mg g^-1 based on Langmuir isotherm as best model with high correlation coefficient. Combination of UA-DSPME and UV-Vis lead to higher sensitivity and lower cost for accurate and repeatable monitoring of Allura Red level in beverage, fruit juice and drink water samples with acceptable recovery and reasonable RSD%.

Simple and selective detection of quercetin in extracts of plants and food samples by dispersive-micro-solid phase extraction based on core–shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers

In the present study, a D-μ-SPE clean-up method was established for the analysis of quercetin in extracts of plants and food samples using a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer as the sorbent by HPLC-UV detection.
