Abstract
In pursuit of sustainable nanomaterial production, this study presents a novel biogenic fibrous silica sphere functionalized with a crown ether ionic liquid for advanced dual-adsorption of methyl orange and Cd(II) from aqueous solution. Sorghum waste serves as the silica source in the adsorbent preparation process, ensuring an eco-friendly approach. The benzo-15-crown-5 ionic liquid is coupled to thiol-functionalized fibrous silica spheres through an efficient thiol-ene click reaction. Under constant conditions (temperature: 298 K, solution volume = 50 mL, adsorbent dosage = 5 mg, pH = 7, shaking speed = 200 rpm), the synthesized material demonstrates maximum adsorption capacities of 507.1 mg g-1 and 306.3 mg g-1 for methyl orange and Cd(II), respectively, according to the Langmuir model. Thermodynamic investigations reveal exothermic adsorption for methyl orange with an enthalpy change of -77.49 KJ mol-1, while endothermic adsorption is observed for Cd(II) with an enthalpy of +24.10 KJ mol-1. The entropy change of adsorption is -0.153 KJ mol-1 K-1 for methyl orange, indicating a more ordered state, and + 0.192 KJ mol-1 K-1 for Cd(II), suggesting increased disorder. The change in Gibbs free energy ranges from -32.66 to -29.60 KJ mol-1 for methyl orange and -32.29 to -35.99 KJ mol-1 for Cd(II), demonstrating that both adsorption processes are spontaneous. These results indicate that the adsorbent has potential as a dual-adsorption material for water remediation applications.

Abstract
Large mechanical hysteresis, stemming from the inherent viscoelasticity of the hydrogel networks, seriously affected its service life and application scope. Herein, we introduced a synergistic approach combining MXene nanoconfinement and bridging effect to produce hydrogels with low mechanical hysteresis. The introduced MXene was able to provide an effective nanoconfined effect on the polymerization of acrylamide monomers. By synergizing with the bridging effect-facilitated by strong interactions between chitosan-grafted polyacrylamide and solvent molecules to accelerate stress transfer-we successfully developed a MXene-reinforced conductive hydrogel with mechanical hysteresis as low as 3.17 %. Additionally, the strong electrostatic interactions between the chitosan and MXene further affiliate the dispersion of MXene within the hydrogel. The resulting MXene-reinforced conductive hydrogel demonstrated remarkable temperature sensitivity (TCR = -1.42 %/°C), making it suitable to be used as a health monitoring device. These findings opened up new perspectives for the further expansion of MXene and beyond.

Abstract
To address the challenge of balancing the mechanical, thermal insulation, and flame-retardant properties of building insulation materials, this study presented a facile approach to modify the rigid polyurethane foam composites (RPUFs) via commercial expandable graphite (EG), ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and silica aerogel (SA). The resulting EG/APP/SA/RPUFs exhibited low thermal conductivity close to neat RPUF. However, the compressive strength of the 6EG/2APP/SA/RPUF increased by 49% along with achieving a V-0 flame retardant rating. The residual weight at 700 °C increased from 19.2 wt.% to 30.9 wt.%. Results from cone calorimetry test (CCT) revealed a 9.2% reduction in total heat release (THR) and a 17.5% decrease in total smoke production (TSP). The synergistic flame-retardant mechanism of APP/EG made significant contribution to the excellent flame retardant properties of EG/APP/SA/RPUFs. The addition of SA played a vital role in reducing thermal conductivity and enhancing mechanical performance, effectively compensating for the shortcomings of APP/EG. The cost-effective EG/APP/SA system demonstrates a positive ternary synergistic effect in achieving a balance in RPUFs properties. This study provides a novel strategy aimed at developing affordable building wall insulation material with enhanced safety features.

Abstract
In this study, an efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite was designed for deep oxidative/adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model and real fuel oils employing surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIP) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). On the surface of silanol-functionalized MCM-48-HPW prepared at different 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW wt%) as the oxidation catalyst, an imprinted polymethacrylic acid polymer (PMAA) as a selective adsorbent of DBT was formed using different amounts of DBT template. Then, various oxidant/sulfur molar ratios were applied during the desulfurization reactions according to the central composite design (CCD). The successful synthesis of the optimum SMIP-PMAA@MCM-48-HPW nanocomposite was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, N2-adsorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, and NMR techniques. The desulfurization percentage of the model oil reached 98.54% under the optimum conditions, and the catalyst percentage was found to be the most significant parameter for desulfurization efficiency. Comparison experiments showed that the combined role of oxidation and adsorption had an extensive impact on desulfurization efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, 96% DBT from gasoline was removed by the optimum nanocomposite. The optimum nanocomposite showed good stability and could be reused five times without a remarkable decrease in the desulfurization ability.

Abstract
Due to the ever-growing global population, it is necessary to develop highly effective processes that minimize the impact of human activities and consumption on the environment. The levels of organic and inorganic contaminants have rapidly increased in recent years, posing a threat to ecosystems. Removing these toxic pollutants from the environment is a challenging task that requires physical, chemical, and biological methods. An effective solution involves the use of novel engineered materials, such as silica-based nanostructured materials, which exhibit a high removal capacity for various pollutants. The starting materials are also thermally and mechanically stable, allowing for easy design and development at the nanoscale through versatile functionalization procedures, enabling their effective use in pollutant capture. However, improvements concerning mechanical properties or applicability for repeated cycles may be required to refine their structural features. This review focuses on hybrid/composite polymer-silica nanostructured materials. The state of the art in nanomaterial synthesis, different techniques of functionalization, and polymer grafting are described. Furthermore, it explores the application of polymer-modified nanostructured materials for the capture of heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons and petroleum derivatives, drugs, and other organic compounds. The paper concludes by offering recommendations for future research aimed at advancing the application of polymer-silica nanostructured materials in the efficiency of pollutant uptake.

Abstract
In this work, silica nanoparticles were modified by 5-chloro-8-quinolinol as a new nanocomposite for the efficient elimination and preconcentration of Al3+ ions from several water sources. The fabricated composite was characterized utilizing XRD, SEM, FT-IR, TEM, CHN elemental analyzer, and N2 adsorption/desorption analyzer. The XRD demonstrated the existence of a wide peak at 2θ = 30°. Also, all the peaks of silica were severely reduced, which confirms the success of loading the 5-chloro-8-quinolinol on the surface of the silica. The SEM and TEM images demonstrated that the composite resembled cotton, and this confirms that 5-chloro-8-quinolinol was successfully loaded on the silica surface. The specific surface area, the average pore size, and the total pore volume of the synthesized composite are 80.53 m2/g, 3.26 nm, and 0.185 cc/g, respectively. In addition, the greatest uptake capacity of the synthesized composite toward aluminum ions is 95.06 mg/g. The results indicated that the adsorption of aluminum ions onto the silica/5-chloro-8-quinolinol composite follows the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. Moreover, the adsorption of aluminum ions by the silica/5-chloro-8-quinolinol composite is spontaneous, chemical, and thermodynamically favorable. The values of % recovery were more than 97%, whereas the values of % RSD were less than 3.5%. Hence, this confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method in the determination of aluminum ions in real water samples.

Abstract
In this study, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) was extracted from Napier grass stems and subsequently functionalized to carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal (XCNC) by using an environmentally friendly method, namely, the KMnO4/oxalic acid redox reaction. The XCNC was subsequently modified with triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS), called VCNC, by using ultrasound irradiation. The characterization of the prepared XCNC and VCNC was performed. The needle-like shape of XCNC was observed with an average diameter and length of 11.5 and 156 nm, respectively. XCNC had a carboxyl content of about 1.21 mmol g-1. The silane treatment showed no significant effects on the diameter and length of XCNC. When incorporated into natural rubber (NR), both XCNC and VCNC showed very high reinforcement, as evidenced by the substantial increases in modulus and hardness of the biocomposites, even at very low filler loadings. However, due to the high polarity of XCNC, tensile strength was not significantly improved with increasing XCNC loading up to 2 phr, above which it decreased rapidly due to the filler agglomeration. For VCNC, the silane treatment reduced hydrophilicity and improved compatibility with NR. The highly reactive vinyl group on the VCNC's surface also takes part in sulfur vulcanization, leading to the strong covalent linkages between rubber and VCNC. Consequently, VCNC showed better reinforcement than XCNC, as evidenced by the markedly higher tensile strength and modulus, when compared at an equal filler loading. This study demonstrates the achievement in the preparation of a highly reinforcing bio-filler (VCNC) for NR from Napier grass using an environmentally friendly method and followed by a quick and simple sonochemical method.

Abstract
Microporous organic networks (MONs) are a booming class of functional materials in elimination of environmental pollutants. However, the limit varieties of MONs still restrict their broad applications. Here we report the synthesis of a novel type of crown ether (CE)-based MONs via the coupling between brominated 18-crown-6 ether and different aromatic alkynyls. The constructed CE-based MONs integrates the good conjugation property of MONs and the inherent host-guest binding sites of CE, allowing the ultrafast and efficient adsorption and removal of a typical environmental priority pollutant 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP). The hydrophobic CE-based MONs can also address the recovery challenge of unstable discrete CE in most organic and inorganic solvents. All CE-based MONs displayed fast adsorption kinetics (< 3 min) and large adsorption capacities (229.1-341.7 mg g-1) for 2,4,6-TCP. The CE-based MONs also gave stable adsorption capacities for 2,4,6-TCP in pH range of 4.0-6.0, NaCl concentration of 0-40 mg L-1, HA concentration of 0-30 mg L-1, or H2O2 ratio of < 5 %. Density functional theory calculation, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectra evaluation revealed adsorption process involved hydrophobic, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions. The CE-based MONs also showed favorable reusability and good adsorption for other toxic chlorophenols. This work highlights the potential of CE-based MONs in contaminants elimination.

Abstract
Sediment, consisting of different aggregation fractions, is a hotspot site for transport and transformation of various pollutants including antibiotics. However, the fate of different antibiotics in aquatic sediments mediated by sediment aggregation fraction adsorption and the mechanism behinds are still unclear. In this study, we investigated the adsorption behavior of two fluoroquinolone antibiotics (ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin) on four aggregation fractions separated from the sediment of Taihu Lake, a typical lake contaminated by antibiotics in China. The results showed that the adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin fitted the Freundlich model, irrespective of sediment aggregation size. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin was depended on the size of sediment aggregation fractions, and the macroaggregation (> 200 μm) exhibited the strongest capacity, followed by large microaggregation (63-200 μm), medium microaggregation (20-63 μm), and small and primary microaggregation (< 20 μm). This fraction size-dependent effects of sediment aggregations on antibiotic adsorption might be closely related to the differences in their specific surface areas, organic matter contents, and surface functional groups. The adsorption of ciprofloxacin and ofloxacin by sediment aggregation fractions was characterized by a combination of chemical and physical adsorptions, with the former being the dominant process. Compared with ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin could be more rapidly and easily absorbed by four sediment aggregation fractions, and more readily complexed with carboxyl groups on macroaggregation surface. The adsorption of two antibiotics by extracellular polymeric substance showed that tryptophan and tyrosine protein-like, humic-like substance on the surface of sediment could bind to both antibiotics through a complexation reaction. The π-π electron donor-acceptor interaction and hydrogen bonds were responsible for the antibiotic adsorption by sediment aggregation.

Abstract
Modified maifanite (MMF) was prepared by the synthesized method with sulfuric acid treatment and high-temperature calcination and evaluated as an effective adsorption material to remove the nutrient salt in waste watery. Compared with the raw maifanite (RMF), the MMF exhibited a higher adsorption capacity and higher removal efficiency. The results showed that the adsorption rates of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NOx-N), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) by MMF were 86.7%, 44.9%, 29.1%, 19.8%, and 11.9%, respectively, and compared to RMF, the average adsorption capacity of these nutrients by MMF increased by 20.5 mg/kg, 126.2 mg/kg, 61.9 mg/kg, 117.18 mg/kg, and 86.9 mg/kg, respectively. MMF maintained the basic structure and composition of maifanite, while having a rougher and looser surface, more irregular pores, wider gaps, and more active materials such as oxidizing Fe. This study suggests that MMF can be further applied to treat domestic sewage and eutrophic water.

Abstract
We developed a computational-based model for simulating adsorption capacity of a novel layered double hydroxide (LDH) and metal organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite in separation of ions including Pb(II) and Cd(II) from aqueous solutions. The simulated adsorbent was a composite of UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH)2 MOF grown onto the surface of functionalized Ni50-Co50-LDH sheets. This novel adsorbent showed high surface area for adsorption capacity, and was chosen to develop the model for study of ions removal using this adsorbent. A number of measured data was collected and used in the simulations via the artificial intelligence technique. Artificial neural network (ANN) technique was used for simulation of the data in which ion type and initial concentration of the ions in the feed was selected as the input variables to the neural network. The neural network was trained using the input data for simulation of the adsorption capacity. Two hidden layers with activation functions in form of linear and non-linear were designed for the construction of artificial neural network. The model's training and validation revealed high accuracy with statistical parameters of R2 equal to 0.99 for the fitting data. The trained ANN modeling showed that increasing the initial content of Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions led to a significant increment in the adsorption capacity (Qe) and Cd(II) had higher adsorption due to its strong interaction with the adsorbent surface. The neural model indicated superior predictive capability in simulation of the obtained data for removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) from an aqueous solution.

Abstract
Multifunctional magnetic nanocomposites based on mesoporous silica have a wide range of potential applications in catalysis, biomedicine, or sensing. Such particles combine responsiveness to external magnetic fields with other functionalities endowed by the agents loaded inside the pores or conjugated to the particle surface. Different applications might benefit from specific particle morphologies. In the case of biomedical applications, mesoporous silica nanospheres have been extensively studied while nanorods, with a more challenging preparation, have attracted much less attention despite the positive impact on the therapeutic performance shown by seminal studies. Here, we report on a sol-gel synthesis of mesoporous rodlike silica particles of two distinct lengths (1.4 and 0.9 μm) and aspect ratios (4.7 and 2.2) using Pluronic P123 as a structure-directing template and rendering ∼1 g of rods per batch. Iron oxide nanoparticles have been synthesized within the pores yielding maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanocrystals of elongated shape (∼7 nm × 5 nm) with a [110] preferential orientation along the rod axis and a superparamagnetic character. The performance of the rods as T2-weighted MRI contrast agents has also been confirmed. In a subsequent step, the mesoporous silica rods were loaded with a cerium compound and their surface was functionalized with fluorophores (fluorescamine and Cyanine5) emitting at λ = 525 and 730 nm, respectively, thus highlighting the possibility of multiple imaging modalities. The biocompatibility of the rods was evaluated in vitro in a zebrafish (Danio rerio) liver cell line (ZFL), with results showing that neither long nor short rods with magnetic particles caused cytotoxicity in ZFL cells for concentrations up to 50 μg/ml. We advocate that such nanocomposites can find applications in medical imaging and therapy, where the influence of shape on performance can be also assessed.

Abstract
The catalytic reduction reaction is one of the most commonly used solutions to convert high-risk contaminants into safe or low-risk materials. Today, with the increasing water pollution, the urgent need for efficient and effective catalysts is felt more than ever. For this purpose, for the first time, a green catalyst composed of silver nanoparticles anchored on itaconic acid-modified Ca-Al layered double hydroxide/gellan gum nanocomposite (Ag/LDH-ITA-GG NC) was prepared from a green approach without the use of any toxic organic solvents. To gain an in-depth insight into the physicochemical properties of the catalyst, different techniques including nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, FESEM/mapping, FTIR, TGA, and XRD were used. The catalytic performance of the Ag/LDH-ITA-GG NC toward 4-nitrophenol reduction by NaBH4 was investigated. The calculated values of the apparent rate constant for this reaction are 0.2142 min-1 (for 1.0 mg of the catalyst), 0.2375 min-1 (for 3.0 mg of the catalyst), and 0.2550 min-1 (for 5.0 mg of the catalyst), indicating that the catalytic conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol on the Ag/LDH-ITA-GG NC catalyst follows the pseudo-first-order kinetics and is comparable to the previous findings in the literature. The results of this study indicated that Ag/LDH-ITA-GG NC can potentially be utilized as an auspicious high efficient green catalyst for the reduction of pollutants like 4-nitrophenol.

Abstract
Herein, two novel porous polymer matrix nanocomposites were synthesized and used as adsorbents for heavy metal uptake. Methacrylate-modified large mesoporous silica FDU-12 was incorporated in poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix through an in-situ polymerization approach. For another, amine-modified FDU-12 was composited with Nylon 6,6 via a facile solution blending protocol. Various characterization techniques including small-angle X-ray scattering, FTIR spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, porosimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis have been applied to investigate the physical and chemical properties of the prepared materials. The adsorption of Pb(II) onto the synthesized nanocomposites was studied in a batch system. After study the effect of solution pH, adsorbent amount, contact time, and initial concentration of metal ion on the adsorption process, kinetic studies were also conducted. For both adsorbents, the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order models were found to be the best fit to predict isotherm and kinetics of adsorption. Based on the Langmuir model, maximum adsorption capacities of 105.3 and 109.9 mg g-1 were obtained for methacrylate-modified FDU-12/poly(methyl methacrylate) and amine-modified FDU-12/Nylon 6,6, respectively.

Abstract
Biomimetic cell membrane-coated nanoparticles have been broadly applied because of their superior biochemical properties. The right-side-out cell membrane coating manner provides nanoparticles with an immune-evasive stealth function in vivo. However, this acts as a drag for drug discovery when the drug targets are the intracellular domain of transmembrane receptors. Herein, inside-out-oriented cell membrane-coated nanoparticles were prepared for screening tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which specifically interacted with the intracellular kinase domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor. Biotinylated human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cell membranes specifically interacted with streptavidin-immobilized Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles and then formed inside-out-oriented cell membrane-coated magnetic nanoparticles (IOCMMNPs). The cell membrane orientation of the IOCMMNPs was successfully confirmed by immunogold electron microscopy, fluorescently labeled confocal microscopy, sialic acid quantification assay, and the adsorption capacity assay. Moreover, IOCMMNPs possessed satisfactory binding capacity, selectivity, and high sensitivity (limit of detection = 0.4 × 10-3 μg mL-1). Ultimately, IOCMMNPs successfully targeted two main compounds from Strychnos nux-vomica whose potential antitumor activities were further validated by pharmacological studies. The application of the inside-out cell membrane coating strategy further enhances the drug screening efficiency and broadens the insight and methodologies for drug lead discovery. This inside-out cell membrane coating concept also provides a method for the future development of engineered cell membrane-coated nanotechnology.

Abstract
2H-NbSe2 single crystal flake (ca. 2 × 2 × 0.5 mm in size) by chemical vapor transport is employed as the precursor for a top-down preparation of NbSe2 micro/nanoparticles by two kinds of processes, i.e. (1) mechanical exfoliation; (2) ultrasonic-assisted exfoliation in ethanol without ageing and with ageing for 210 days. NbSe2 micro/nanoparticles are applied on top of a Cu disk by a drop-casting process and the tribological property in sliding against a Cu pin under sliding electrical contact is investigated at room temperature. Mechanical exfoliation produces NbSe2 microplatets with typical sizes of 1 μm to 30 μ m with a thickness less than 2 μm. Ultrasonic-assisted exfoliation without aging facilitates the formation of NbSe2 micro/nanoplatets with sizes of 0.1 μm to 25 μm and nano-whiskers with 100 nm in diameter and 1 ~ 3 μm in length, but Nb2O5 and Se are also found on the basis of XPS results. Prolonged aging of the suspensions modifies the morphology by converting platets and whiskers into corrugated floccules (hybrid material), which are composed of Nb2O5, Se, NbSe2, and graphene. Notably, NbSe2 micro/nanoparticles by ultrasonic-assisted exfoliation without ageing exhibit an excellent lubricating property with low friction coefficient (0.3), mild wear, and longer wear lifetime (120 min) than that of mechanical exfoliated NbSe2 microplatets (10 min). The wear lifetime for the aged NbSe2 micro/nanoparticles can be as long as 504 min and are 4.2 times of the sample without aging, which can be a good solid lubricant for sliding electrical contact.

Abstract
Mesoporous silica nanomaterials provide an extraordinary advantage for making
new and superior heterogeneous catalysts because of their surface silanol groups. The functionalized
mesoporous SBA-15, such as acidic, basic, BrÖnsted, lewis acid, and chiral catalysts,
are used for a wide range of organic syntheses. The importance of the chiral ligands,
which were immobilized on the SBA-15, was mentioned in this review to achieve chiral
products as valuable target molecules. Herein, their synthesis and application in different organic
transformations are reviewed from 2016 till date 2020.

Abstract
This study was designed to prepare an adsorbent without any complex modification process for the removal of atrazine (AZN) from aqueous phase. Thus, Mobil composition of matter No. 41 (MCM-41) was synthesized and modified by physical activation at high temperature (650 °C). The synthesized adsorbent was tested by XRD, SEM, EDX, FT-IR and BET to confirm the successful synthesis as well as effectiveness for the adsorption of AZN. The average particle size of prepared material was found to be about 500 nm, while the BET calculations showed that adsorbent was porous with a specific surface area of 25.9 m2/g. Later, it was used in batch removal studies of AZN for which, it showed a high adsorption capacity of 89.99 (mg/g). The pH of 6, temperature of 313 K was found to be the optimized conditions for the maximum removal of AZN. Of the four kinetic models studied, the pseudo-first-order yielded a superior fit in comparison with the other three models. The results indicated that the five linearized adsorption equilibrium isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, Temkin and Harkins-Jura models) closely correlate the AZN adsorption removal process with Pearson correlation coefficient (R2) values of 0.9955, 0.8551, 0.8736, 0.8913 and 0.7253, respectively. The energy functions obtained by thermodynamic analysis suggested that the AZN sorption follows a non-spontaneous and endothermic path.

Abstract
To date, many nanoadsorbents have been developed and used to eliminate heavy metal contamination, however, one of the challenges ahead is the preparation of adsorbents from processes in which toxic organic solvents are used in the least possible amount. Herein, we have developed a new carboxylic acid-functionalized layered double hydroxide/metal-organic framework nanocomposite (LDH/MOF NC) using a simple, effective, and green in situ method. UiO-66-(Zr)-(COOH)2 MOF nanocrystals were grown uniformly over the whole surface of COOH-functionalized Ni50Co50-LDH ultrathin nanosheets in a green water system under a normal solvothermal condition at 100 °C. The synthesized LDH/MOF NC was used as a potential adsorbent for removal of toxic Cd(II) and Pb(II) from water and the influence of important factors on the adsorption process was monitored. Various non-linear isotherm and kinetic models were used to find plausible mechanisms involved in the adsorption, and it was found that the Langmuir and pseudo-first-order models show the best agreement with isotherm and kinetic data, respectively. The calculated maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II) and Pb(II) by the LDH/MOF NC were found to be 415.3 and 301.4 mg g-1, respectively, based on the Langmuir model (pH = 5.0, adsorbent dose = 0.02 g, solution volume = 20 mL, contact time = 120 min, temperature = 25 ℃, shaking speed 200 rpm).

Abstract
Purpose Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a critical situation in which liver failure affects brain function. HE could result in a state of coma and death. The liver is the main organ for ammonium ion (NH4 +) metabolism. Hence, acute and/or chronic liver failure could lead to hyperammonemia. NH4 + is the most suspected neurotoxic agent in HE. Thus, finding new therapeutic options to decrease plasma and brain NH4 + levels has a significant clinical value. Mesoporous silica (MS) particles have revolutionized many aspects of pharmaceutical sciences, including drug delivery systems. Moreover, recently, MS has been applied as agents for the detoxification of chemicals (eg, drugs and poisons). Methods First, MS particles containing amine groups (MS-NH2) were synthesized in co-condensation processes. Then, the structure was modified by succinic anhydride to have MS-SA. The MS-SA was characterized (FT-IR, XRD, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), DLS-Zeta FESEM-EDX, and HRTEM). Then, the potential of MS-NH2 and MS-SA particles in adsorption of NH4 + was investigated in vitro and in vivo. MS-NH2 and MS-SA were incubated with increasing concentrations (0.1-10 mM) of NH4 +, and the scavenging capacity of the investigated particles was evaluated. On the other hand, different doses (1 and 5 mg/kg per day) of nanoparticles were administered to a hyperammonemia animal model. Results It was figured out that both MS-NH2 and MS-SA significantly scavenged NH4 + in the in vitro model. However, the NH4 + scavenging capability of MS-SA was more significant. Administration of MS-NH2 and MS-SA also considerably decreased the level of ammonium in plasma and brain and improved cognitive and locomotor activity in hyperammonemic animals. The effects of MS-SA were more significant than MS-NH2 in the HE animal model. Conclusion Collectively, our data suggest that MS particles, especially succinic acid-functionalized MS, could act as special ancillary treatment in HE as a critical clinical complication.

Abstract
The mesoporous silica-polymer hybrid was prepared as an adsorbent for divalent heavy metals (Pb(II), Ni(II), and Cu (II)) from rice husk and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) through three successive steps. The first is the preparation of the mesoporous silica (SBA-15), the second is grafting 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane on SBA-15, and the following step is the formation of Schiff base (PVP-SBA-15) between amine end-capped silica and PVP moieties. The materials were characterized by different techniques, including FTIR, low and wide-angle XRD, N2-adsorption, and HR-TEM. The NH2-SBA-15 displayed a moderate affinity toward heavy element ions under study. Grafting of PVP moieties introduces a high affinity toward heavy metal ions, and the adsorption is a well-fitted Langmuir adsorption model. A series of experiment adsorption equilibrium reported with SBA-15, NH2-SBA-15, and PVP-SBA-15, which showed an adsorption capacity of 128 mg/g (Cu (II)), 175 mg/g (Pb (II)) and 72 mg/g for Ni(II). Kinetic studies have shown that the best way to describe the adsorption process of heavy metals is pseudo-first-order. The value of ΔG°, ΔH°, and ΔS° demonstrated that the adsorption of heavy metals on the PVP-SBA-15 was endothermic in nature and spontaneous. These results exhibited that PVP-SBA-15 material has considerable competence in eliminating heavy metals from wastewater.

Abstract
Cell membrane-cloaked nanotechnology has attracted increasing attention owing to its unique bionic properties, such as specific recognition and biocompatibility conferred by the integrated membrane structure and receptors. However, this technology is limited by the dissociation of the cell membrane from its carrier. Here, we report a novel type of cell membrane-cloaked modified magnetic nanoparticle with good stability in drug discovery. High α1A-adrenergic receptor (α1A-AR) expressing HEK293 cell membrane-cloaked magnetic nanogrippers (α1A/MNGs) were used as a platform for the specific targeting and binding of α1A-AR antagonists as candidate bioactive compounds from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Furthermore, using a dynamic covalent bonding approach, α1A/MNGs showed great stability with positive control drug recoveries of α1A/MNGs showing almost no decline after use in five adsorption-desorption cycles. Moreover, the α1A/MNGs possessed a unilamellar membrane with magnetic features and exhibited good binding capacity and selectivity. Ultimately, TCM and pharmacological studies of the bioactivity of the screened compounds confirmed the considerable targeting and binding capability of α1A/MNGs. Application of aldehyde group modification in this drug-targeting concept further improved biomaterial stability and paves the way for the development of new drug discovery strategies. More importantly, the successful application of α1A/MNGs provides new insights into methodologies to improve the integration of cell membranes with the nanoparticle platform.

Abstract
The development of easier, cheaper, and more effective synthetic strategies for hierarchical multimodal porous materials and multi-shell hollow spheres remains a challenging topic to utilize them as adsorbents in environmental applications. Here, the hierarchical architecture of multi-shell hollow micro–meso–macroporous silica with pollen-like morphology (MS-HMS-PL) has been successfully synthesized via a facile soft-templating approach and characterized for the first time. MS-HMS-PL sub-microspheres showed a trimodal hierarchical pore architecture with a high surface area of 414.5 m2 g−1, surpassing most of the previously reported multishelled hollow nanomaterials. Due to its facile preparation route and good physicochemical properties, MS-HMS-PL could be a potential candidate material in water purification, catalysis, and drug delivery. To investigate the applicability of MS-HMS-PL as an adsorbent, its adsorption performance for Cr(VI) in water was evaluated. Important adsorption factors affecting the adsorption capacity of adsorbent were systematically studied and Kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics parameters were computed via the non-linear fitting technique. The maximum capacity of adsorption computed from the Langmuir isotherm equation for Cr(VI) on MS-HMS-PL was 257.67 mg g−1 at 293 K and optimum conditions (pH 4.0, adsorbent dosage 5.0 mg, and contact time 90 min).

Abstract
This study was planned to recycle calcium and the phosphorus-rich Nile tilapia fish scale biowaste into nano-hydroxyapatite (FHAP), using ultrasonic-assisted extraction of calcium and phosphorus from fish scales, which was optimized in term of extraction time, acid concentration, extraction temperature, and ultrasonic power. These two elements were determined simultaneously by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry and the FHAP phase was formed upon addition of the extracted element solution in alkaline medium using homogenous precipitation assisted with ultrasound energy. The FHAP adsorbent was characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller. A combination of FHAP and the ultrasonic method was then used to remove Hg2+ from aqueous solution. Four significant variables affecting Hg2+ removal, namely, adsorbent dosage, pH, ultrasonic power, and adsorption time, were studied. The results exhibited that the optimal conditions for maximizing the removal of Hg2+ were 0.02 g adsorbent dosage, pH 8, 0.4 kW ultrasonic power, 20 min adsorption time, and 30 °C adsorption temperature. The sorption mechanism of Hg2+ was revealed by isotherm modeling, indicating that FHAP adsorbent has a potential for Hg2+ removal in aqueous media with the maximum adsorption capacity being 227.27 mg g-1. This adsorption behavior is in agreement with the Langmuir model as reflected by a satisfactory R2 value of 0.9967, when the kinetics data were fitted with pseudo-second-order. Therefore, the FHAP could be an alternative adsorbent for the ultrasonic-assisted removal of Hg2+ at very high efficiency and within a very short period of time.

Abstract
This work focuses on the development of a simple method to prepare heterogeneous catalysts with tunable basicity and stability for aldol condensation of furfural and acetone. Silica gel was grafted by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) with 20, 30, 40 and 50 wt. % of APTES using probe-type ultrasonicator with a power of 130 W and a frequency of 20 kHz. The grafted samples were studied by XRD, SEM, N2 sorption, FTIR, XPS, CHN and TG analysis, and CO2-TPD. The sonication facilitated the bond formation between APTES and the silica gel with less pore blocking than the conventional grafting method. The basicity of the samples was tunable with the quantity of APTES loading. The grafted samples were active catalysts for aldol condensation between furfural and acetone at 60 °C. The catalyst with 30 wt. % APTES grafting (30APS-U) provided a nearly complete furfural conversion and high furfurylbutenone selectivity. The conversion and selectivity increased with time and reached the highest values at 24 h. Thus, the catalysts with tunable basicity prepared by ultrasound-assisted grafting of silica with various APTES amounts were effective in furfural valorization.

Abstract
Microwave-ultrasound-assisted facile synthesis of a dumbbell- and flower-shaped potato starch phosphate (PSP) polymer, hereafter PSP, was carried out by cross-linking the hydroxyl groups of native potato starch (NPS) using phosphoryl chloride as a cross-linking agent. Structural and morphological analysis manifested the successful formation of the dumbbell- and flower-shaped PSP biosorbent with enhanced specific surface area and thermal stability. Viscoelastic behavior of NPS and PSP suggested increased rigidity in PSP, which helped the material to store more deformation energy in an elastic manner. The synthesized PSP biosorbent material was successfully tested for efficient and quick uptake of Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) ions from aqueous medium under competitive and noncompetitive batch conditions with q m values of 130.54, 106.25, 91.84, and 51.38 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption selectivity was in consonance with Pearson's hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) theory in addition to their order of hydrated radius. Adsorption of Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Hg(II) followed a second-order kinetics and the adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model. Quantum computations using density functional theory (DFT) further supported the experimental adsorption selectivity, Zn(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Hg(II), in terms of metal-oxygen binding energy measurements. What was more intriguing about PSP was its reusability over multiple adsorption cycles by treating the metal(II)-complexed PSP with 0.1 M HCl without any appreciable loss of its adsorption capacity.

Abstract
Reactive dyes have been identified to be highly hazardous pollutants because they were shown to be more toxic towards mammals than general organic compounds and organic dyes. Accordingly, for the first time, meso-architectured mercapto-modified siliceous hollow quasi-capsules (SH-SHQC) were prepared by a facile, ultrasonic-assisted, and one-step synthesis protocol. Adsorptive removal of rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene blue (MB) onto SH-SHQC in a batch system has been investigated. Isotherm results agreed very well with the Langmuir equation for both dyes. The maximum adsorption capacity of SH-SHQC for RhB and MB was determined with the Langmuir equation and was found to be 147.06 and 119.05 mg g-1 at 298 K, respectively (pH: 6.0 for RhB and 7.0 for MB; adsorbent dosage: 15.0 mg; the volume of the dye solution: 40.0 mL). Among different kinetic models, the pseudo-first-order equation was better fitted since experimental data agreed very well with theoretical data. SH-SHQC was shown to be a promising adsorbent for adsorptive removal of reactive dyes from aqueous solutions. To date, there has been no report on the adsorption of reactive dye cations by meso-architectured mercapto-modified siliceous hollow quasi-capsules prepared by an ultrasonic-assisted, one-pot, and sol-gel synthesis method.

Abstract
Clay-hydrogel nanocomposites are suitable material for mitigating the pollution/environmental impact because of their high adsorption capacity. In this study, the synthesis of polyacrylamide/bentonite hydrogel nanocomposite was assisted by ultrasound through successful incorporation of nanobentonite as filler and cross-linker into polyacrylamide framework. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, XRD, BET, SEM-EDX, and TEM in order to observe structural changes and sorption interactions. The effect of adsorbent dose, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and pH on the sequestration of Pb2+ and Cd2+ was analyzed. The adsorbent removed more than 95% Pb2+ and Cd2+ within first 20 min, which corresponds to relatively high pseudo-first order rate constant, k1 (0.240 for Pb2+ and 0.253 1/min for Cd2+) and pseudo-second order rate constant, k2 (0.031 for Pb2+ and 0.033 g/mg/min for Cd2+). The isotherm and kinetics modeling data were best described by Freundlich isotherm over the entire concentration range and pseudo-second order rate equation, respectively. The thermodynamic studies implied spontaneous and endothermic nature of adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity (138.33 for Pb2+ and 200.41 mg/g for Cd2+) determined using Langmuir model along with a good regeneration potential depicts that polyacrylamide/bentonite hydrogel nanocomposite could be used effectively for Pb2+ and Cd2+ uptake from aqueous solution.

Abstract
The design and development of an environmentally benign porous adsorbent for effective simultaneous adsorption of organic dyes and heavy metals from water are important but remain a big challenge. Herein, we have designed a layered double hydroxide/metal-organic framework-based hierarchical nanocomposite (LDH/MOF HNC) by a facile, room-temperature in situ approach. This paper for the first time reports a hierarchical trimodal micro-meso-macroporous LDH/MOF composite with a high surface area (surface area 1282 m2 g-1 and pore volume 0.93 cm3 g-1), synthesised by uniformly growing MOF nanocrystals on the surface of LDH nanosheet ultrathin films. An attempt is made to quantitatively demonstrate the adsorption data via suitable nonlinear kinetic and isotherm equations for single, simultaneous, and consecutive adsorption of the orange II reactive dye and Cr(vi). Experiments were performed at various values of pH (6.0-11.0), adsorbent dosages (1.0-8.0 mg), adsorbate concentrations (5-500 mg L-1), and temperatures (293-323 K). The Langmuir model revealed a satisfactory fit to the equilibrium data of the LDH/MOF HNC (correlation coefficients R2 > 0.98) with a calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 1173 and 733 mg g-1 for orange II and Cr(vi), respectively, in a simultaneous adsorption system. The results of the study demonstrated that LDH/MOF HNCs could potentially be applied as a promising nanoadsorbent for the simultaneous removal and extraction of toxic dyes and metals from water.

Abstract
A key challenge in adsorption process of toxic organic and inorganic species is the design and development of adsorbent materials bearing an abundance of accessible adsorption sites with high affinity to achieve both fast adsorption kinetics and elevated adsorption capacity for toxic contaminants. Herein, a novel anion-exchange adsorbent based on fibrous silica nanospheres KCC-1 was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-assisted post-grafting modification of KCC-1 with 1-methyl-3- (triethoxysilylpropyl)imidazolium chloride for the first time. Silica fibers with micro-mesoporous structure display the proper combination of features to serve as a potential scaffold for decorating adsorption sites to create desired ion-exchange adsorbent. The obtained N-methylimidazolium-functionalized KCC-1 (MI-Cl-KCC-1) with fibrous nanosphere morphology showed a high surface area (∼241 m2 g-1) and high pore volume (0.81 m2 g-1). The adsorption behaviors of toxic hexavalent chromium from aqueous media by the MI-Cl-KCC-1 were systematically studied using the batch method. The adsorption rate was relatively fast, and MI-Cl-KCC-1 possesses a high capacity for the adsorption of Cr(VI). The maximum Cr(VI) adsorption was obtained at pH 3.0-4.0. Different non-linear isotherm equations were tested for choosing an appropriate adorption isotherm behavior, and the adsorption data for MI-Cl-KCC-1 were consistent with the Langmuir model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 428 ± 8 mg g-1.

Abstract
To enhance the adsorption capacity of Cd2+, -NH2 groups were introduced into the rice straw-derived biochar surface by combining nitrification and amination. The batch and continuous Cd2+ adsorption experiments were performed to determine the role of -NH2 groups on the surface of biochar. The physical and chemical characteristics were analyzed for comparison. The results indicated that the adsorption capacity of the modified biochar (BC-NH2) was boosted by 72.1%. The results of continuous adsorption experiments in fixed bed columns showed that the penetration time of BC-NH2 was three times that of original biochar. The adsorption of Cd2+ by BC-NH2 is a spontaneous endothermic chemical reaction, which was obtained by combing sorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamic analysis. The Cd2+ adsorption was mainly the complexation between -NH2 group on biochar surface and Cd2+ in solution. Finally, a possible interaction mechanism between Cd2+ and BC-NH2 was proposed.
