Abstract
OBJECTIVES Accurate intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement is essential for managing glaucoma, requiring tonometry. Local anesthesia is typically used, but nerve blocks may be needed for blepharospasm. This study investigated the efficacy of auriculopalpebral nerve block with lidocaine in achieving eyelid akinesia and its influence on IOP in dogs. ANIMALS AND PROCEDURES In a randomized, blinded trial, 12 healthy adult mixed-breed dogs (24 eyes) received either auriculopalpebral nerve block with 2% lidocaine (n = 12 eyes) or no block (n = 12 eyes). Tetracaine drops were used for topical anesthesia in half of blocked/non-blocked eyes, and the rest of the eyes got artificial tears as control. The impact of nerve block was evaluated through assessments of menace response, palpebral reflex, and IOP before the block, after drop instillation, and at 15-min intervals until block dissipation. RESULTS Auriculopalpebral nerve block provided effective eyelid akinesia in 58.5% (7/12 eyes) at 15 min, reaching 91.7% (11/12 eyes) at 30 min, indicating peak efficacy. Subsequently, the block gradually diminished, with 66.7% (8/12 eyes) and 33.3% (4/12 eyes) maintaining akinesia at 45 and 60 min, respectively. Importantly, neither auriculopalpebral nerve block nor tetracaine administration significantly affected IOP measurements (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS Auriculopalpebral nerve block using lidocaine demonstrated efficient eyelid akinesia, peaking at 30 min postinjection. This technique proved to be safe with no notable alterations in IOP, suggesting its potential utility in canine ophthalmology for procedures requiring eyelid akinesia, particularly in the management of glaucoma where maintaining accurate IOP measurements is crucial for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring the disease.

Abstract
Rats are a commonly used animal model for the study of the pathogenesis and novel treatments of glaucoma, which is induced experimentally using invasive, painful procedures. Peribulbar anaesthesia (PBA) is frequently used in people and domestic animals prior to ophthalmic surgeries to provide excellent perioperative analgesia. Our goal was to develop a PBA technique adapted to rat anatomy, improving the welfare of animals used as a model for glaucoma. Eighteen rat cadavers (n = 36 eyes) were used to establish the optimal needle insertion location. Five injection techniques using 0.1 mL/100 g lidocaine 2% and a contrast agent (1:1 volume ratio) were compared via computed tomography (CT). CT images were scored for injectate distribution at four locations: extraconal, intraconal, around the optic nerve and at the orbital fissure (scale 0-8, where 0 = none and 8 = excellent). Median scores using the dorso-medial-75° (5; range 2-6) and medial-canthus (4.5; range 2-8) injection techniques were not different from the dorso-medial-45° (4; range 3-6) technique and were higher (better distribution) compared with mid-ventral (3; range 2-5) and ventro-lateral (2; range 1-3) techniques. The two superior techniques were used in two experimental rats (n = 4 eyes) to determine the volume of bupivacaine 0.5% necessary to affect corneal touch threshold (CTT) and periocular skin sensitivity (PSS). A volume of 0.05 mL/100 g decreased CTT and PSS for several hours, while a larger volume produced excessively long effects. Dorso-medial-75° or medial-canthus PBA using 0.05 mL/100 g bupivacaine are likely to provide ocular and periocular analgesia in rats, with minor transient adverse effects.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study compared the quality of retrobulbar anesthesia using a blind inferior-temporal palpebral approach (ITP) with an ultrasound-guided supratemporal (ST) technique in dogs undergoing unilateral enucleation. ANIMAL STUDIED Twenty-one client-owned dogs were undergoing enucleation. PROCEDURES Dogs were randomly assigned to receive ITP (n = 10) or ST (n = 11) with 0.5% ropivacaine at 0.1 mL/cm of neurocranial length. The anesthetist was blinded to the technique. Intraoperative data included cardiopulmonary variables, inhalant anesthetics requirement, and requirement for rescue analgesia (intravenous fentanyl 2.5 mcg/kg). Postoperative data included pain scores, sedation scores, and need for intravenous hydromorphone (0.05 mg/kg). Treatments were compared using Wilcoxon's rank sum test or Fisher's exact test as appropriate. Comparison of variables over time were tested using a mixed effect linear model on rank. Significance was set at p = 0.05. RESULTS Intraoperative cardiopulmonary variables and inhalant requirements were not different between groups. Dogs receiving ITP required median (interquartile range, IQR) 1.25 (0, 2.5) mcg/kg intraoperative fentanyl while those receiving ST required none (p < 0.01). Intraoperative fentanyl was required in 5/10 and 0/11 of dogs in the ITP and ST groups, respectively (p = 0.01). Postoperative analgesia requirements were not significantly different between groups; 2/10 and 1/10 dogs in the ITP and ST groups, respectively. Sedation score negatively affected pain score (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The ultrasound-guided ST technique was more effective at decreasing intraoperative opioid requirements than the blind ITP approach in dogs undergoing unilateral enucleation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conductive anaesthesia of the nerves around the head is one of the methods of intraoperative pain relief (under deep anaesthesia but before proceeding with the procedure). Performing this procedure on primates is especially challenging for the veterinarian, due to their cranial anatomy and topography, which has more in common with the human skull than with the skulls of other animals. Knowledge of key bony structures, including cranial foramina, is essential for effective anaesthesia of the cranial nerves. RESULTS In this study, the differences in the topography of the cranial foramina in eight selected species of primates were examined: Angola colobus (Colobus angolensis), Celebes crested macaque (Macaca nigra), L'Hoest's monkey (Allochrocebus lhoesti), baboon (Papio cynocephalus), buff-bellied capuchin (Sapajus xanthosternos), black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata), crowned lemur (Eulemur coronatus), and a ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) coming from the Wroclaw Zoological Garden (Poland). The cranial nerves running through the foramina have also been described and their anaesthesia techniques against bone points have been tested to relieve post-operative pain in the area of the head supplied by these nerves. CONCLUSION The tests carried out show differences in the topography of the cranial foramina, and therefore also differences in the methods of injection, so the results obtained in this study may be useful in veterinary medicine, especially for practising veterinarians.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare postoperative analgesia and the time of limb weight bearing induced by the intraoperative administration of a local anesthetic at the site of the femoral head and neck excision (FHNE) in dogs, with and without the administration of preoperative epidural anesthesia. Additionally, the impact of postoperative opioid drug administration on weight-bearing time was examined. This randomized, blinded, prospective clinical study included 30 client-owned dogs. The dogs were randomly divided into three groups (A, B, C), each further divided into two subgroups (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2). Group A received epidural anesthesia and ropivacaine at the ostectomy site, Group B received only ropivacaine, and Group C served as the control group. Subgroup 1 received a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug postoperatively, while Subgroup 2 had tramadol added to their regimen. Pain assessment was conducted using the University of Melbourne Pain Scale (UMPS) and an algometer. The study concluded that multimodal analgesia, utilizing all the aforementioned analgesic techniques, resulted in faster limb weight bearing for dogs undergoing FHNE.

Abstract
The objective of this retrospective case series is to report the outcomes of an opioid-free anesthetic plan in dogs undergoing enucleation surgery. A total of 14 dogs were admitted for enucleation between March and December 2020. A multimodal approach to perioperative analgesia was used, with a focus on retrobulbar anesthesia. A combination of an ultrasound-guided retrobulbblock with a supratemporal approach in association with ketamine, dexmedetomidine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs was used in the reported cases. Intraoperative nociception was defined as an increase of 20% from the baseline in one or more of the following parameters: heart rate, respiratory rate or mean arterial pressure. An ultrasound-guided retrobulbar block in an opioid-free anesthesia regime was effective at managing the perioperative analgesia of 13 out of 14 dogs. In only one case, a bolus of fentanyl was administered to treat intraoperative nociception. Recovery was uneventful in all the dogs, and the postoperative pain scores remained below the intervention threshold at all time points. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case series of opioid-free anesthesia for enucleation in dogs.

Abstract
Understanding the effects of diabetes and hyperglycemia on hydration, acid-base status, and immune function is paramount to safely anesthetizing diabetic cats and dogs. Preoperative stabilization of glucose concentrations, hydration, and electrolyte imbalances is key to minimizing morbidity and mortality. Blood glucose monitoring perioperatively will help guide insulin and dextrose administration. Specific anesthetic considerations, and peri-anesthetic management of animals with diabetes mellitus, including anesthetic drugs and recommended insulin protocols are discussed.

Abstract
A 13-year-old neutered, blue-eyed female Siamese cat with a bodyweight of 4.8 kg was admitted for enucleation of the right eye. An ultrasound guided retrobulbar block with 1 mL of ropivacaine was performed under general anaesthesia. When the tip of the needle was visualised inside the intraconal space, negative aspiration of the syringe before injection and no obvious resistance during injection were confirmed. Instantly, after ropivacaine was administered, the cat became apnoeic, and its heart rate and the blood pressure increased significantly for a short period of time. During surgery, the cat needed cardiovascular support to maintain blood pressure and was under continuous mechanical ventilation. Spontaneous breathing returned 20 min after the end of anaesthesia. Brainstem anaesthesia was suspected, and after recovery, the contralateral eye was examined. A reduced menace response, horizontal nystagmus, mydriasis, and absence of the pupillary light reflex were present. The following day, mydriasis was still present, but the cat was visual and was discharged. The inadvertent intra-arterial injection of ropivacaine was suspected to be the cause of the spread into the brainstem. To the current authors' knowledge, possible brainstem anaesthesia has only been reported in a cat 5 min after a retrobulbar block but never instantly.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is limited knowledge regarding the safety and accuracy of ultrasound-guided retrobulbar nerve blocks in horses. The aim of this study was to compare these parameters between blind and ultrasound-guided injection techniques for the dorsal retrobulbar nerve block in horses. METHODS Equine cadaver heads were used to inject the retrobulbar space with contrast medium (CM). Injections were performed either blindly based on anatomic landmarks (blind group, n = 44) or under ultrasonographic guidance (US-group, n = 44), equally divided between an experienced and unexperienced operator. Needle position and distribution of CM were assessed with computed tomography imaging and evaluated by a board-certified veterinary diagnostic imager blinded to the technique. Safety and accuracy of both techniques were compared. RESULTS Ocular penetration was observed in two cases (n = 2/44) in the blind group but not in the US group (n = 0/44). No intrathecal, intraneural, or intravascular injections were seen in either group. Safety was significantly improved in the US group (p = .026). There was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the accuracy of the injection. Excellent accuracy was achieved more often with the ultrasound-guided technique (n = 11/22) than with the blind technique (n = 7/22) when performed by the unexperienced operator, but this difference was not statistically significant. CONCLUSION To prevent globe-threatening complications and improve the safety of the injection, we recommend using the ultrasound-guided injection technique for the dorsal retrobulbar nerve block.

Abstract
Two new metal-organic compounds, namely [Cu(CrO4)(4,4'-bipy)(H2O)]·n(H2O) (1) together with [Mn(Cr2O7)(bpp)2]n (2) (4,4'-bipy is 4,4'-bipyridine and bpp is 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane), were hydrothermally generated, which were characterized structurally through a series of characterization techniques. Moreover, compounds 1 and 2 have 2.95 eV and 3.02 eV of narrow optical band gap values, and possess outstanding photocatalytic effects for the methylene blue degradation under irradiation of visible light. The application of above compounds in the ophthalmic local anesthesia was examined and the specific mechanism was tested. First of all, the acetylcholine content in the synaptic cleft was measured with enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) assay after treated with the CPs. The acetylcholine receptor relative expression on nerve cells was subsequently measured via real time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) under the treatment of compounds. In the end, the complexes' toxicity was evaluated by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) detection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Standing surgery in horses combining intravenous sedatives, analgesics and local anaesthesia is becoming more popular. Ultrasound guided (USG) peribulbar nerve block (PB) has been described in dogs and humans for facial and ocular surgery, reducing the risk of complications versus retrobulbar nerve block (RB). OBJECTIVE To describe a technique for USG PB in horse cadavers. METHODS Landmarks and PB technique were described in two equine cadaver heads (Phase 1), with computed tomography (CT) imaging confirming contrast location and spread. In Phase 2, ten equine cadaver heads were randomised to two operators naïve to the USG PB, with moderate experience with ultrasonography and conventional "blind" RB. Both techniques were demonstrated once. Subsequently, operators performed five USG PB and five RB each, unassisted. Contrast location and spread were evaluated by CT. Injection site success was defined for USG PB as extraconal contrast, and for RB intraconal contrast. RESULTS Success was 10/10 for USG PB and 0/10 for RB (p < 0.001). Of the RB injections, eight resulted in extraconal contrast and two in the masseter muscle (p = 0.47). CONCLUSIONS The USG PB had a high injection site success rate compared with the RB technique; however, we cannot comment on clinical effect. The USG technique was easily learnt, and no potential complications were seen. The USG PB nerve block could have a wide application for use in horses for ocular surgeries (enucleations, eyelid, corneal, cataract surgeries, and ocular analgesia) due to reduced risk of iatrogenic damage. Further clinical studies are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Injection techniques for retrobulbar anaesthesia are published in horses, but neither safety nor anaesthetic efficacy and duration have been evaluated objectively in vivo. OBJECTIVE To characterise the safety and efficacy of one published technique for retrobulbar anaesthesia. STUDY DESIGN Randomised, controlled descriptive experiment. METHODS Unilateral retrobulbar injection with 10 mL lidocaine (2%) was performed in eight sedated adult mares. Contralateral eyes served as untreated controls. Neurophthalmic parameters, intraocular pressure (IOP), and corneal and periocular sensation were measured awake, post-sedation and at periodic time points for 24 hours following injection. Adverse effects were documented. RESULTS Injection of 10 mL lidocaine significantly increased IOP for up to 2 hours (P < .05) maximally at 30 min (mean [95% CI]: 6.0 [2.7, 9.2] mm Hg, P < .001). Six of the eight treated eyes developed mild to moderate reversible chemosis for 2 to 24 hours. One eye developed severe chemosis and superficial corneal ulceration at 24 and 48 hours following injection respectively. Corneal sensitivity significantly decreased for 6 hours (P < .05), maximally at 10 min (-44.4 [-34.6, -54.1] mm, P < .001). Periocular sensitivity (measured as increase in applied force) significantly decreased dorsally and medially for up to 2 hours (maximal at 2 hours (367.1 [238.5, 495.7] g, P < .001, and at 30 min: 345.8 [202.6, 488.9] g, P < .001) respectively). Ventral and lateral sensitivity were not effectively decreased beyond 30 min. Optic nerve function was not consistently reduced following injection. MAIN LIMITATIONS Investigators were not masked to the treated eye. CONCLUSIONS Retrobulbar injection using 10 mL lidocaine is safe in normal eyes of adult horses, but carries risk in structurally compromised or glaucomatous eyes due to transient IOP increase. Reversible chemosis commonly develops 2-4h following injection, and may be severe in some horses with risk for corneal ulceration. Corneal anaesthesia is rapid and prolonged, but all periocular regions are not consistently anaesthetised. Retrobulbar injection should be combined with other local anaesthetic injections for eyelid surgeries or enucleations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a comprehensive formula for calculating the volume of local anaesthetic solution used for retrobulbar anaesthesia in dogs with different skull morphologies. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort imaging study. ANIMALS Skull computed tomography (CT) images of 188 dogs of different breeds collected between January 2009 and December 2017. METHODS Anatomical integrity of the orbit and adjacent structures, presenting complaint, clinical signs and CT findings were verified to exclude ocular abnormalities. The volume of the retrobulbar cone of 376 eyes was calculated using CT scans of the dogs' skulls. Additional data recorded included morphology of the skull, body weight, sex and size of the dogs, all of which were matched for possible association to the retrobulbar cone volume through univariable and multivariable linear regression models. Results of linear regression models were expressed as estimated beta coefficients with the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs). RESULTS Using univariate analysis, the retrobulbar cone volume was positively associated with weight and male sex. In addition, brachycephalic and dolichocephalic dogs showed a larger retrobulbar cone volume than mesocephalic dogs, while sex was no longer significantly associated with the retrobulbar cone volume. In multivariate analysis, when considering all variables in the model, weight emerged as the strongest predictor (beta coefficient: 0.062 mL kg-1, 95% CI: 0.056-0.067 mL kg-1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS and clinical relevance In the veterinary literature, there is no agreement on the precise volume of local anaesthetic solution that should be used to achieve intraconal retrobulbar anaesthesia in dogs. Here we suggest a formula to calculate the retrobulbar cone volume and, accordingly, the injection volume of local anaesthetic solution for effective retrobulbar anaesthesia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the analgesic effects of a retrobulbar block with ropivacaine in dogs undergoing enucleation. STUDY DESIGN Prospective, randomized, masked placebo-controlled trial. ANIMALS A total of 23 client-owned dogs. METHODS Dogs were randomized to be administered a preoperative inferior-temporal palpebral retrobulbar injection of either ropivacaine 0.75% (1 mL 10 kg-1; group RG) or equivalent volume of 0.9% saline (control; group CG). Intraoperative variables recorded to detect a response to noxious stimuli included heart rate (HR) and mean arterial pressure (MAP). Three observers assessed and recorded pain using a numerical rating pain scale and visual analog scale (VAS) before anesthesia (baseline) and postoperatively at 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 24 hours after extubation. Rescue analgesia was administered if intraoperative HR or MAP increased by ≥ 20% from the previously recorded surgical time point, average postoperative pain scores totaled ≥ 9/20, scored ≥ 3/4 in any one category with VAS ≥ 35/100, or if VAS was ≥ 35/100 with a palpation score > 0/4. RESULTS Intraoperatively, there was no significant difference in HR or MAP between groups. Rescue analgesia was administered intraoperatively to four and one dogs and postoperatively to five and seven dogs in groups CG and RG, respectively, with no significant difference between groups. VAS scores were significantly lower in ropivacaine dogs at extubation (p = 0.02), but not at other postoperative time points. Adverse events were not observed in either group. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Preoperative retrobulbar 0.75% ropivacaine injection (1 mL 10 kg-1) provided analgesia in dogs following enucleation at extubation; however, intraoperative and postoperative pain control did not differ from a placebo injection with saline. Lack of differences between groups may have been influenced by sample size limitations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the peribulbar injectate distribution and probability of regional anaesthesia of four peribulbar anaesthetic techniques in equine cadavers. STUDY DESIGN Prospective experimental cadaver study. ANIMALS A total of 12 isolated equine cadaver heads and 24 eyes. METHODS The 24 orbits underwent one of four injection techniques (six orbits each) with a mixture (1:4) of contrast medium and saline (CM): 20 mL ventrolateral peribulbar injection (V-20), 20 mL dorsolateral peribulbar injection (D-20), combined ventrolateral and dorsolateral peribulbar injections 10 mL each (VD-20) or 20 mL each (VD-40). To evaluate and score CM distribution at the base of, within the extraocular muscle cone (EOMC), and around the optic nerve (before and after pressure application to the periorbital area), computed tomography was performed. To assess the probability of achieving locoregional anaesthesia, two criteria were applied and both scored as 'likely', 'possible' or 'unlikely'. To compare CM distribution scores between injection techniques, Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance was used. Mann-Whitney U test was used for post hoc comparisons between groups when needed. A p value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS The CM distribution within the EOMC and around the optic nerve circumference was detected as 'possible' only after pressure application in seven out of 24 orbits (V-20, 3; D-20, 1; VD-40, 3). It was never considered 'likely' either before or after pressure application. The CM distribution at the EOMC base was considered 'likely' to provide regional anaesthesia in 50% (V-20), 0% (D-20), 33% (VD-20), 100% (VD-40) and in 66% (V-20), 16% (D-20), 50% (VD-20), 100% (VD-40) before and after applying pressure, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Complete regional anaesthesia seems more likely using the VD-40 technique, although the authors advise caution due to the risk of potential complications. Future studies are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of the technique in vivo.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe a novel in-plane ultrasound (U/S)-guided temporal approach to peribulbar block in dogs. STUDY DESIGN Prospective experimental cadaver study. ANIMALS A group of 10 Beagle cadavers. METHODS After describing the U/S anatomy, peribulbar injection was performed bilaterally in 10 thawed Beagle cadavers by two randomly assigned operators. A 5-8 MHz microconvex U/S probe was positioned caudal to the orbital ligament in the longitudinal plane. Using an in-plane technique, methylene blue dye was injected in five dogs (10 eyes total), while methylene blue dye and iohexol contrast mixture (50:50) were injected in the remaining five dogs. Injection volume was 0.2 mL cm-1 of cranial length. A computed tomography (CT) scan was performed on dogs injected with dye and contrast to identify spread of contrast. Dissection to visualize dye spread in the orbit was performed in all dogs. Injection success was defined as spread of contrast into the peribulbar space. The pattern of distribution of contrast-dye was also assessed. Comparisons between operator and bilateral injections were assessed using a Student t test (p < 0.05). All other data are reported as number (n/N) and percentage (%). RESULTS Peribulbar spread was noted in 19/20 injections (95%) on dissection. CT imaging (five dogs) illustrated peribulbar contrast spread in 9/10 injections (90%), with mixed peribulbar/retrobulbar spread for the remaining injection. Contrast was present at the rostral alar foramen in 4/10 (40%) injections, orbital fissure in 5/10 (50%), oval foramen in 1/10 (10%), maxillary nerve in 3/10 (30%) and intracranial in 5/10 (50%). Coverage of the maxillary nerve was noted on 3/20 (15%) injections on dissection. No further dye spread was noted. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE This technique demonstrated peribulbar spread of injectate in 100% of injections for the 10 canine cadavers studied. Further studies are required to evaluate this technique clinically.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe a contrast medium distribution pattern after peribulbar injection in cadavers. STUDY DESIGN A cadaveric study. ANIMALS A group of eight male dogs and four canine cadaver heads. METHODS In phase 1, ultrasound-guided peribulbar injections (1.0 mL dye) were performed in four orbits using a subzygomatic approach. After dissection, the procedure was considered successful if 1) no dye was found in the retrobulbar space, 2) the peribulbar compartment was stained and 3) the dye reached the orbital fissure. In phase 2, using 16 orbits, the same technique was used to inject 0.1 mL kg-1 contrast medium into (group A, n = 8) or outside (group B, n = 8) the peribulbar compartment. After freezing at -20°C, orbits were imaged using computed tomography, and the contrast medium distribution was analysed. RESULTS In phase 1, the procedure was successful in all four eyes. In phase 2, two orbits (one in each group) were removed from the study: one was not injected and the other was injected twice. The contrast medium was found inside the peribulbar compartment in six of seven (85.7%) group A orbits and two of seven (28.6%) group B orbits. In all of these cases, distribution to the orbital fissure, rostral alar foramen, mandibular foramen and inside the skull was observed. The oval foramen was reached in three of seven (42.9%) group A orbits and one of seven (14.3%) group B orbits. In one/seven (14.3%) group A orbits and five/seven (71.4%) group B orbits, the contrast medium was found inside the masseter and temporal muscles, and no distribution towards the aforementioned structures was observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Ultrasound-guided peribulbar injection of 0.1 mL kg-1 contrast medium in canine cadavers can lead to an extensive distribution of the injectate that reaches the orbital fissure, the rostral alar, oval, and mandibular foramina and can be found intra-cranially.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate complications associated with, and without, bupivacaine retrobulbar local anesthesia in dogs undergoing unilateral enucleation surgery. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective, observational study. ANIMALS A total of 167 dogs underwent unilateral enucleation surgery via a transpalpebral approach. METHODS Records from 167 dogs that underwent unilateral enucleation surgery that did (RB) or did not (NB) include retrobulbar bupivacaine anesthesia were reviewed, including anesthetic record, daily physical examination records, surgery report, patient discharge report and patient notes within 14 days of the surgery. Specific complications and severity were compared between RB and NB using the Wilcoxon rank-sum test. A 'complication burden' (0-5) comprising five prespecified complications was assigned and tested using rank-sum procedures. Statistical significance was set to 0.05. RESULTS Group RB included 97 dogs and group NB 70 dogs. Dogs in NB had a 17.0 percentage points (points) greater risk for a postoperative recovery complication (38.6% versus 21.6%; 95% confidence interval: 3.0-30.6 points; p = 0.017). There was inconclusive evidence that dogs in group RB had a lower risk of requiring perioperative anticholinergic administration (12.4% versus 22.9%; 10.5 points; p = 0.073). Other complications were similar between groups RB and NB with risks that differed by <10 points. The risk of hemorrhage was similar between groups RB (22.7%) and NB (20.0%) with no significant difference in the level of severity (p = 0.664). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE In this retrospective study, the use of retrobulbar bupivacaine for enucleation surgery in dogs was not associated with an increased risk of major or minor complications.

Abstract
Pain management in veterinary patients is a crucial component of appropriate patient care. Local anaesthetic drugs used in local and regional blockade can completely block the transmission of nociceptive impulses, decreasing both intra‐operative nociception and postoperative pain, while decreasing the potential incidence of adverse effects that can be associated with systemic boluses of drugs. For efficacy and safety, this class of drugs is recommended as part of the analgesic protocol in the majority of surgical procedures and traumatic injuries. Numerous local and regional blocks are proven effective in dogs and cats, thus providing the clinician with ample opportunity to include these blocks in practice. This manuscript, Part 2 of a two‐part instalment, focuses on brief descriptions of select commonly used local/regional anaesthesia techniques for dogs and cats that cover a multitude of painful surgeries/injuries and that can be implemented in any practice. In Part 1 of this topic, detailed information on local anaesthetic drugs commonly used in small animal practice was reviewed (Grubb & Lobprise, 2020).

Abstract
Locoregional (local and regional) anesthesia is used routinely during surgical procedures of the head. The goal of this article is to provide a practical guide for the clinician to safely perform different techniques in dogs and cats and to minimize the risk of complications associated with locoregional anesthesia.
