Perception of contours and shapes: Low and intermediate stage mechanisms

Measures of angularity in digital images

In light of the growing interest in studying the affective and aesthetic attributes of curvature, the present paper describes four digital image processing techniques that can be used to objectively discriminate between angular and curvilinear stimuli. MATLAB scripts for each of the techniques accompany the paper. Three studies are then reported that evaluate the efficacy of five metrics, derived from the four techniques, at quantifying the degree of angularity depicted in an image. Images of simple polygons (Study 1), artistic drawings of everyday objects (Study 2), and real-world objects, typefaces, and abstract patterns (Study 3) were analyzed. Logistic regression models were used to determine the relative importance of the metrics at distinguishing between angular and curvilinear items. With one exception, all of the metrics were capable of distinguishing between angular and curvilinear items at a level above chance, but some metrics were better at doing so than others, and their discriminative capacity was influenced by the characteristics of the image. The strengths and limitations of the metrics are discussed, as well as some practical recommendations.

Impaired contour object perception in psychosis

Contour integration, the process of joining spatially separated elements into a single unified line, has consistently been found to be impaired in schizophrenia. Recent work suggests that this deficit could be associated with psychotic symptomatology, rather than a specific diagnosis such as schizophrenia. Examining a transdiagnostic sample of participants with psychotic psychopathology, we obtained quantitative indices of contour perception in a psychophysical behavioral task. We found impaired contour discrimination performance among people with psychotic psychopathology (PwPP, n = 62) compared to healthy controls (n = 34) and biological relatives of PwPP (n = 44). Participants with schizophrenia (n = 31) showed impaired task performance compared to participants with bipolar disorder (n = 18). We also measured responses during an analogous task using ultra-high field (7T) functional MRI and found higher responses in the lateral occipital cortex of PwPP compared to controls. Using task-based functional connectivity analyses, we observed abnormal connectivity between visual brain areas during contour perception among PwPP. These connectivity differences only emerged when participants had to distinguish the contour object from background distractors, suggesting that a failure to suppress noise elements relative to contour elements may underlie impaired contour processing in PwPP. Our results are consistent with impaired contour integration in psychotic psychopathology, and especially schizophrenia, that is related to cognitive dysfunction, and may be linked to impaired functional connectivity across visual regions.

Age-related changes in the susceptibility to visual illusions of size

As the global population ages, understanding of the effect of aging on visual perception is of growing importance. This study investigates age-related changes in adulthood along size perception through the lens of three visual illusions: the Ponzo, Ebbinghaus, and Height-width illusions. Utilizing the Bayesian conceptualization of the aging brain, which posits increased reliance on prior knowledge with age, we explored potential differences in the susceptibility to visual illusions across different age groups in adults (ages 20-85 years). To this end, we used the BTPI (Ben-Gurion University Test for Perceptual Illusions), an online validated battery of visual illusions developed in our lab. The findings revealed distinct patterns of age-related changes for each of the illusions, challenging the idea of a generalized increase in reliance on prior knowledge with age. Specifically, we observed a systematic reduction in susceptibility to the Ebbinghaus illusion with age, while susceptibility to the Height-width illusion increased with age. As for the Ponzo illusion, there were no significant changes with age. These results underscore the complexity of age-related changes in visual perception and converge with previous findings to support the idea that different visual illusions of size are mediated by distinct perceptual mechanisms.

Development of radial frequency pattern perception in macaque monkeys

Infant primates see poorly, and most perceptual functions mature steadily beyond early infancy. Behavioral studies on human and macaque infants show that global form perception, as measured by the ability to integrate contour information into a coherent percept, improves dramatically throughout the first several years after birth. However, it is unknown when sensitivity to curvature and shape emerges in early life or how it develops. We studied the development of shape sensitivity in 18 macaques, aged 2 months to 10 years. Using radial frequency stimuli, circular targets whose radii are modulated sinusoidally, we tested monkeys' ability to radial frequency stimuli from circles as a function of the depth and frequency of sinusoidal modulation. We implemented a new four-choice oddity task and compared the resulting data with that from a traditional two-alternative forced choice task. We found that radial frequency pattern perception was measurable at the youngest age tested (2 months). Behavioral performance at all radial frequencies improved with age. Performance was better for higher radial frequencies, suggesting the developing visual system prioritizes processing of fine visual details that are ecologically relevant. By using two complementary methods, we were able to capture a comprehensive developmental trajectory for shape perception.

Faster bi-stable visual switching in psychosis

Bi-stable stimuli evoke two distinct perceptual interpretations that alternate and compete for dominance. Bi-stable perception is thought to be driven at least in part by mutual suppression between distinct neural populations that represent each percept. Abnormal visual perception has been observed among people with psychotic psychopathology (PwPP), and there is evidence to suggest that these visual deficits may depend on impaired neural suppression in the visual cortex. However, it is not yet clear whether bi-stable visual perception is abnormal among PwPP. Here, we examined bi-stable perception in a visual structure-from-motion task using a rotating cylinder illusion in a group of 65 PwPP, 44 first-degree biological relatives, and 43 healthy controls. Data from a 'real switch' task, in which physical depth cues signaled real switches in rotation direction were used to exclude individuals who did not show adequate task performance. In addition, we measured concentrations of neurochemicals, including glutamate, glutamine, and γ-amino butyric acid (GABA), involved in excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission. These neurochemicals were measured non-invasively in the visual cortex using 7 tesla MR spectroscopy. We found that PwPP and their relatives showed faster bi-stable switch rates than healthy controls. Faster switch rates also correlated with significantly higher psychiatric symptom levels, specifically disorganization, across all participants. However, we did not observe any significant relationships across individuals between neurochemical concentrations and SFM switch rates. Our results are consistent with a reduction in suppressive neural processes during structure-from-motion perception in PwPP, and suggest that genetic liability for psychosis is associated with disrupted bi-stable perception.

A hybrid computational approach to anticipate individuals in sequential problem solving

Human-awareness is an ever more important requirement for AI systems that are designed to assist humans with daily physical interactions and problem solving. This is especially true for patients that need support to stay as independent as possible. To be human-aware, an AI should be able to anticipate the intentions of the individual humans it interacts with, in order to understand the difficulties and limitations they are facing and to adapt accordingly. While data-driven AI approaches have recently gained a lot of attention, more research is needed on assistive AI systems that can develop models of their partners' goals to offer proactive support without needing a lot of training trials for new problems. We propose an integrated AI system that can anticipate actions of individual humans to contribute to the foundations of trustworthy human-robot interaction. We test this in Tangram, which is an exemplary sequential problem solving task that requires dynamic decision making. In this task the sequences of steps to the goal might be variable and not known by the system. These are aspects that are also recognized as real world challenges for robotic systems. A hybrid approach based on the cognitive architecture ACT-R is presented that is not purely data-driven but includes cognitive principles, meaning heuristics that guide human decisions. Core of this Cognitive Tangram Solver (CTS) framework is an ACT-R cognitive model that simulates human problem solving behavior in action, recognizes possible dead ends and identifies ways forward. Based on this model, the CTS anticipates and adapts its predictions about the next action to take in any given situation. We executed an empirical study and collected data from 40 participants. The predictions made by CTS were evaluated with the participants' behavior, including comparative statistics as well as prediction accuracy. The model's anticipations compared to the human test data provide support for justifying further steps built upon our conceptual approach.

Rhythm contour drives musical memory

Listeners' use of contour information as a basis for memory of rhythmic patterns was explored in two experiments. Both studies employed a short-term memory paradigm in which listeners heard a standard rhythm, followed by a comparison rhythm, and judged whether the comparison was the same as the standard. Comparison rhythms included exact repetitions of the standard, same contour rhythms in which the relative interval durations of successive notes (but not the absolute durations of the notes themselves) were the same as the standard, and different contour rhythms in which the relative duration intervals of successive notes differed from the standard. Experiment 1 employed metric rhythms, whereas Experiment 2 employed ametric rhythms. D-prime analyses revealed that, in both experiments, listeners showed better discrimination for different contour rhythms relative to same contour rhythms. Paralleling classic work on melodic contour, these findings indicate that the concept of contour is both relevant to one's characterization of the rhythm of musical patterns and influences short-term memory for such patterns.

Consensus recommendations on peripheral blood smear review: defining curricular standards and fellow competency

Graduate medical education training in hematology in North America is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Trainees routinely review peripheral blood smears (PBS) in providing clinical care. Competency in PBS review at graduation is required by the ACGME. However, there are no consensus guidelines on best practices surrounding PBS review, education, or competency. We describe the generation of proposed theory and the consensus recommendations developed through a multi-institutional focus group, developed using constructivist grounded theory and a modified nominal group technique. Eight academic hematologists, spanning classical and malignant hematology, enrolled and participated in 2 one-hour focus groups. All routinely worked with fellows and half had formally instructed trainees on PBS interpretation. Focus group data were analyzed using mixed-methods techniques. Tenets of emerging theory were identified through inductive coding. Consensus recommendations (CR) were generated. Participants reviewed CR in an iterative fashion until consensus was reached. Strong consensus was reached on multiple aspects of PBS education. All agreed that trainees should learn PBS review through a systematic approach. Group discussion focused on disorders of red and white blood cells. The diagnoses of acute leukemia and thrombotic microangiopathies were most commonly discussed, with specific emphasis on disorders in which prompt recognition was required to avert significant patient morbidity. These CR offer external validity to future research and curricular development for both PBS review and other visuospatial tasks in medical education.

The Psychosis Human Connectome Project: Design and rationale for studies of visual neurophysiology

Visual perception is abnormal in psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. In addition to hallucinations, laboratory tests show differences in fundamental visual processes including contrast sensitivity, center-surround interactions, and perceptual organization. A number of hypotheses have been proposed to explain visual dysfunction in psychotic disorders, including an imbalance between excitation and inhibition. However, the precise neural basis of abnormal visual perception in people with psychotic psychopathology (PwPP) remains unknown. Here, we describe the behavioral and 7 tesla MRI methods we used to interrogate visual neurophysiology in PwPP as part of the Psychosis Human Connectome Project (HCP). In addition to PwPP (n = 66) and healthy controls (n = 43), we also recruited first-degree biological relatives (n = 44) in order to examine the role of genetic liability for psychosis in visual perception. Our visual tasks were designed to assess fundamental visual processes in PwPP, whereas MR spectroscopy enabled us to examine neurochemistry, including excitatory and inhibitory markers. We show that it is feasible to collect high-quality data across multiple psychophysical, functional MRI, and MR spectroscopy experiments with a sizable number of participants at a single research site. These data, in addition to those from our previously described 3 tesla experiments, will be made publicly available in order to facilitate further investigations by other research groups. By combining visual neuroscience techniques and HCP brain imaging methods, our experiments offer new opportunities to investigate the neural basis of abnormal visual perception in PwPP.

The contour effect: Differences in the aesthetic preference and stress response to photo-realistic living environments

The interest in the response to contours has recently re-emerged, with various studies suggesting a universal preference for curved over angular stimuli. Although no consensus has yet been reached on the reasons for this preference, similar effects have been proposed in interior environments. However, the scarcely available research primarily depends on schematic or unmatched stimuli and faces heterogeneity in the reported results. In a within-subject design, we investigated the claimed contour effect in photo-realistic indoor environments using stimulus material previously tested in virtual reality (VR). A total of 198 online participants rated 20 living room images, exclusively manipulated on the contours (angular vs. curved) and style (modern vs. classic) levels. The scales represented aesthetic (beauty and liking) and stress (rest and stress) responses. Beyond our main focus on contours, we additionally examined style and sex effects to account for potential interactions. Results revealed a significant main effect of contours on both aesthetic (η2g = 1–2%) and stress (η2g = 8–12%) ratings. As expected, images of curved (vs. angular) contours scored higher on beauty, liking, and rest scales, and lower on stress. Regarding interactions with style, curvature was aesthetically preferred over angularity only within images depicting modern interiors, however, its positive effect on stress responses remained significant irrespective of style. Furthermore, we observed sex differences in aesthetic but not in stress evaluations, with curvature preference only found in participants who indicated female as their sex. In sum, our study primarily confirms positive effects of curvature, however, with multiple layers. First, the impact on aesthetic preference seems to be influenced by individual and contextual factors. Second, in terms of stress responses, which might be especially relevant for designs intended to promote mental-health, the consistent effects suggest a more generalizable, potentially biophilic characteristic of curves. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate these effects in fully-matched, photo-realistic, and multi-perspective interior design stimuli. From the background of a previous VR trial from our research group, whereby the same rooms did not elicit any differences, our findings propose that static vs. immersive presentations might yield different results in the response to contours.

How universal is preference for visual curvature? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Evidence dating back a century shows that humans are sensitive to and exhibit a preference for visual curvature. This effect has been observed in different age groups, human cultures, and primate species, suggesting that a preference for curvature could be universal. At the same time, several studies have found that preference for curvature is modulated by contextual and individual factors, casting doubt on this hypothesis. To resolve these conflicting findings, we conducted a systematic meta-analysis of studies that have investigated the preference for visual curvature. Our meta-analysis included 61 studies which provided 106 independent samples and 309 effect sizes. The results of a three-level random effects model revealed a Hedges' g of 0.39-consistent with a medium effect size. Further analyses revealed that preference for curvature is moderated by four factors: presentation time, stimulus type, expertise, and task. Together, our results suggest that preference for visual curvature is a reliable but not universal phenomenon and is influenced by factors other than perceptual information.

DPED: Bio-inspired dual-pathway network for edge detection

Edge detection is significant as the basis of high-level visual tasks. Most encoder-decoder edge detection methods used convolutional neural networks, such as VGG16 or Resnet, as the encoding network. Studies on designing decoding networks have achieved good results. Swin Transformer (Swin) has recently attracted much attention in various visual tasks as a possible alternative to convolutional neural networks. Physiological studies have shown that there are two visual pathways that converge in the visual cortex in the biological vision system, and that complex information transmission and communication is widespread. Inspired by the research on Swin and the biological vision pathway, we have designed a two-pathway encoding network. The first pathway network is the fine-tuned Swin; the second pathway network mainly comprises deep separable convolution. To simulate attention transmission and feature fusion between the first and second pathway networks, we have designed a second-pathway attention module and a pathways fusion module. Our proposed method outperforms the CNN-based SOTA method BDCN on BSDS500 datasets. Moreover, our proposed method and the Transformer-based SOTA method EDTER have their own performance advantages. In terms of FLOPs and FPS, our method has more benefits than EDTER.

Forgetting in visual working memory: Internal noise explains decay of feature representations

The precision of visual working memory (VWM) representations decreases as time passes. It is often assumed that VWM decay is random and caused by internal noise accumulation. However, forgetting in VWM could occur systematically, such that some features deteriorate more rapidly than others. There exist only a few studies testing these two models of forgetting, with conflicting results. Here, decay of features in VWM was thoroughly tested using signal detection theory methods: psychophysical classification images, internal noise estimation, and receiver operant characteristic (ROC). A modified same–different memory task was employed with two retention times (500 and 4000 ms). Experiment 1 investigated VWM decay using a compound grating memory task, and Experiment 2 tested shape memory using radial frequency patterns. Memory performance dropped some 15% with increasing retention time in both experiments. Interestingly, classification images showed virtually indistinguishable weighting of stimulus features at both retention times, suggesting that VWM decay is not feature specific. Instead, we found a 77% increase in stimulus-independent internal noise at the longer retention time. Finally, the slope of the ROC curve plotted as z-scores was shallower at the longer retention time, indicating that the amount of stimulus-independent internal noise increased. Together these findings provide strong support for the idea that VWM decay does not result from a systematic loss of some stimulus features but instead is caused by uniformly increasing random internal noise.

Measuring image distortions arising from age-related macular degeneration: An Iterative Amsler Grid (IAG)

Metamorphopsia, perceived as distortion of a shape, is experienced in age-related macular degeneration (AMD): straight lines appear to be curved and wavy to AMD patients and some other retinal pathologies. Conventional clinical assessment largely relies on asking patients to identify irregularities in Amsler Grids - a standardized set of equally spaced vertical and horizontal lines. Perceived distortions or gaps in the grid are a sign of macular pathology. Here, we developed an iterative Amsler Grid (IAG) procedure to obtain a quantifiable map of visual deformations. Horizontal and vertical line segments representing metamorphopsia are displayed on a computer screen. Line segments appearing distorted are adjusted by participants using the computer mouse to change their orientation in several iteratively such that they appear straight. Control participants are able to reliably correct deformations that simulate metamorphopsia while maintaining fixation in the center. In a pilot experiment, we attempted to obtain deformation maps from a small number of AMD patients. Whereas some patients with extensive scotomas found this procedure challenging, others were comfortable using the IAG and generating deformation maps corresponding to their subjective reports. This procedure may potentially be used to quantify local distortions and map them reliably in patients with early AMD.

Hiding the Rabbit: Using a genetic algorithm to investigate shape guidance in visual search

During visual search, attention is guided by specific features, including shape. Our understanding of shape guidance is limited to specific attributes (closures and line terminations) that do not fully explain the richness of preattentive shape processing. We used a novel genetic algorithm method to explore shape space and to stimulate hypotheses about shape guidance. Initially, observers searched for targets among 12 random distractors defined, in radial frequency space, by the amplitude and phase of 10 radial frequencies. Reaction time (RT) was the measure of “fitness.” To evolve toward an easier search task, distractors with faster RTs survived to the next generation, “mated,” and produced offspring (new distractors for the next generation of search). To evolve a harder search, surviving distractors were those yielding longer RTs. Within eight generations of evolution, the method succeeds in producing visual searches either harder or easier than the starting search. In radial frequency space, easy distractors evolve amplitude × frequency spectra that are dissimilar to the target, whereas hard distractors evolve spectra that are more similar to the target. This method also works with naturally shaped targets (e.g., rabbit silhouettes). Interestingly, the most inefficient distractors featured a combination of a body and ear distractors that did not resemble the rabbit (visually or in spectrum). Adding extra ears to these distractors did not impact the search spectrally and instead made it easier to confirm a rabbit, once it was found. In general, these experiments show that shapes that are clearly distinct when attended are similar to each other preattentively.

Visual sensitivity to parallel configurations of contours compared with sensitivity to other configurations

People can perceive 3D information from contour drawings and some types of configurations of contours in such drawings are important for 3D perception. We know that our visual system is sensitive to these configurations. Koshmanova & Sawada (2019, Vision Research, 154, 97-104) showed that the sensitivity is higher to a parallel configuration of contours than to a perpendicular configuration of contours. In this study, two psychophysical experiments were conducted that compared the sensitivity to a parallel configuration to two different configurations. In Experiment 1, orientation thresholds were measured with parallel and converging configurations composed of three contours. In Experiment 2, orientation thresholds of configurations composed of two contours were measured with parallel, collinear, and perpendicular configurations. The results of Experiment 1 showed that the visual system is more sensitive to parallel configurations than to converging configurations. The results of Experiment 2 showed that the sensitivity to the parallel configuration is analogous to the sensitivity to the collinear configuration, and it is higher than the sensitivity to the perpendicular configuration. The role that the parallel configuration plays in the 3D perception of contour-drawings is discussed.

Behavioural Adaptation to Hereditary Macular Dystrophy: A Systematic Review on the Effect of Early Onset Central Field Loss on Peripheral Visual Abilities

Purpose:

Hereditary macular dystrophies (HMD) result in early onset central field loss. Evidence for cortical plasticity has been found in HMD, which may enhance peripheral visual abilities to meet the increased demands and reliance on the peripheral field, as has been found in congenitally deaf adults and habitual action video-game players. This is a qualitative synthesis of the literature on the effect of early onset central field loss on peripheral visual abilities. The knowledge gained may help in developing rehabilitative strategies that enable optimisation of remaining peripheral vision.

Methods:

A systematic search performed on the Web of Science and PubMED databases yielded 728 records published between 1809 to 2020, of which seven case-control studies were eligible for qualitative synthesis.

Results:

The search highlighted an overall paucity of literature, which lacked validity due to small heterogeneous samples and deficiencies in reporting of methods and population characteristics. A range of peripheral visual abilities at different eccentricities were studied. Superior performance of HMD observers in the peripheral field or similarities between the preferred retinal loci (PRL) and normal fovea were observed in four of seven studies. Findings were often based on studies including a single observer. Further larger rigorous studies are required in this area.

Conclusions:

Spontaneous perceptual learning through reliance on and repeated use of the peripheral field and PRL may result in some specific superior peripheral visual abilities. However, worse performance in some tasks could reflect unexpected rod disease, lack of intensive training, or persistent limitations due to the need for cones for specific tasks. Perceptual learning through training regimes could enable patients to optimise use of the PRL and remaining peripheral vision. However, further studies are needed to design optimal training regimes.

Developmental trajectories of global motion and global form perception from 4 years to adulthood

Literature on the development of global motion and global form perception demonstrated their asynchronous developmental trajectories. However, former studies have failed to clearly establish the critical period of maturation for these specific abilities. This study aimed to analyze the developmental trajectories of global motion and global form discrimination abilities by controlling for basic visual functions and general cognitive ability and to present the global motion and global form normative scores. A sample of 456 children and adolescents (4-17 years of age) and 76 adults recruited from the Italian and Swedish general population participated in the study. Motion and form perception were evaluated by the motion coherence test and form coherence test, respectively. Raven's matrices were used to assess general cognitive ability, the Lea Hyvärinen chart test was used for full- and low-contrast visual acuity, and the TNO test was used for stereopsis. General cognitive ability and basic visual functions were strongly related to motion and form perception development. Global motion perception had an accelerated maturation compared with global form perception. For motion perception, an analysis of the oblique effect's development showed that it is present at 4 years of age. The standardized scores of global motion and form coherence tests can be used for clinical purposes.

Impact of microsaccades on visual shape processing

Sensitivity to subtle changes in the shape of visual objects has been attributed to the existence of global pooling mechanisms that integrate local form information across space. Although global pooling is typically demonstrated under steady fixation, other work suggests prolonged fixation can lead to a collapse of global structure. Here, we ask whether small ballistic eye movements that naturally occur during periods of fixation affect the global processing of radial frequency (RF) patterns-closed contours created by sinusoidally modulating the radius of a circle. Observers were asked to discriminate the shapes of circular patterns and RF-modulated patterns while fixational eye movements were recorded binocularly at 500 Hz. Microsaccades were detected using a velocity-based algorithm, allowing trials to be sorted according to the relative timing of stimulus and microsaccade onset. Results revealed clear perisaccadic changes in shape discrimination thresholds. Performance was impaired when microsaccades occurred close to stimulus onset, but facilitated when they occurred shortly afterward. In contrast, global integration of shape was unaffected by the timing of microsaccades. These findings suggest that microsaccades alter the discrimination sensitivity to briefly presented shapes but do not disrupt the spatial pooling of local form signals.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Microsaccades cause rapid displacement of visual images during fixation and dramatically alter the perception of basic image features. However, their effect on more complex aspects of visual processing is not well understood. Here, we demonstrate a dissociation in the impact of microsaccades on shape perception. Although overall shape discrimination performance is modulated around the time of microsaccades, the pooling efficiency of global mechanisms that combine local form information across space remains unaffected.

Frequency ratio determines discrimination of concentric radial frequency patterns in the peripheral visual field

Using a radial frequency discrimination task that has not been tested in many previous studies, we examined the dependence of the pattern radius (4 to 16 deg) on the radial frequency thresholds of two different types of concentric radial frequency (RF) patterns: constant circular contour frequency (CCF) RF patterns with different radii, which have the constant physical length of modulation cycle in external real-world space, and constant radial frequency magnified RF patterns with different radii, which have the constant cortical length of modulation cycles. These two types RF patterns used as the reference stimuli had an equal maximum orientation difference from circularity regardless of change in radius. The discrimination threshold expressed by the frequency ratio between RF patterns of different frequencies vs. radius functions for the constant CCF RF patterns indicated different functional forms dependent on the modulation amplitude of the RF patterns. The thresholds increased with increasing pattern radius for small modulation amplitude RF patterns but were relatively flattened for large-amplitude RF patterns. This dependence was ascribed to the eccentricity effect wherein the deformation thresholds for discriminating the RF pattern from a circle increase with increasing stimulus eccentricity (Feng et al. 2020). The discrimination thresholds vs. radius functions for the magnified RF patterns were also flattened for different modulation amplitudes and frequencies. The thresholds (frequency ratio) were similar at all eccentricities. Cortical magnification neutralized the eccentricity effect observed for the constant CCF patterns.

Eccentricity Effect of Deformation Detection for Radial Frequency Patterns With Their Centers at Fixation Point

We measured the eccentricity effect of deformation thresholds of circular contours for two types of the radial frequency (RF) patterns with their centers at the fixation point: constant circular contour frequency (CCF) RF patterns and constant RF magnified (retino-cortical scaling) RF patterns. We varied the eccentricity by changing the mean radius of the RF patterns while keeping the centers of the RF patterns at the fixation point. Our peripheral stimulus presentation was distinguished from previous studies which have simply translated RF patterns at different locations in the visual field. Sensitivity for such shape discrimination fell off as the moderate and high CCF patterns were presented on more eccentric sites but did not as the low CCF patterns. However, sensitivity held constant as the magnified RF patterns were presented on more eccentric sites, indicating that the eccentricity effects observed for the high and moderate CCF patterns were neutralized by retinocortical mapping. Notably, sensitivity for the magnified RF patterns with large radii (4°–16°) presented in the peripheral field revealed a similar RF dependence observed for RF patterns with small radii (0.25°–1.0°) presented at the fovea in previous studies.

The perception threshold of the panda illusion, a particular form of 2D pulse-width-modulated halftone, correlates with visual acuity

To call attention to the danger of extinction of the panda bear, the Lithuanian artist Ilja Klemencov created the artwork “They can disappear”. The illustration is composed of black-and-white zigzagged lines, which form the famous panda logo of the World Wild Fund For Nature (WWF) when seen from a distance. If one is too close to the artwork, it is difficult to spot the bear, however, if one steps back or takes off one’s glasses the panda suddenly appears. This led us to ask if the ability to see the panda is related to the visual acuity of the observer and if therefore, the panda illusion can be used to assess the spatial resolution of the eye. Here we present the results of the comparison between visual acuity determined using the Landolt C and that predicted from the panda illusion in 23 healthy volunteers with artificially reduced visual acuity. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the panda illusion is based on a 2D pulse-width modulation, explain its technical history, and provide the equations required to create the illusion. Finally, we explain why the illusion indeed can be used to predict visual acuity and discuss the neural causes of its perception with best-corrected visual acuity.

Neural dynamics of cue reliability in perceptual decisions

To extract meaningful information from scenes, the visual system must combine local cues that can vary greatly in their degree of reliability. Here, we asked whether cue reliability mostly affects visual or decision-related processes, using visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and a model-based approach to identify when and where stimulus-evoked brain activity reflects cue reliability. Participants performed a shape discrimination task on Gaborized ellipses, while we parametrically and independently, varied the reliability of contour or surface cues. We modeled the expected behavioral performance as a linear function of cue reliability and established at what latencies and electrodes VEP activity reflected behavioral sensitivity to cue reliability. We found that VEPs were linearly related to the individual behavioral predictors at around 400 ms post-stimulus, at electrodes over parietal and lateral temporal cortex. The observed cue reliability effects were similar for variations in contour and surface cues. Notably, effects of cue reliability were absent at earlier latencies where visual shape information is typically reported, and also in data time-locked to the behavioral response, suggesting the effects are not decision-related. These results indicate that reliability of visual cues is reflected in late distributed perceptual processes.

Gamma-band correlations in the primary visual cortex

This paper generalizes and extends previous work on using neural field theory to quantitatively analyze the two-dimensional (2D) spatiotemporal correlation properties of gamma-band (30-70 Hz) oscillations evoked by stimuli arriving at the primary visual cortex, and modulated by patchy connectivities that depend on orientation preference (OP). Correlation functions are derived analytically for general stimulus and measurement conditions. The theoretical results reproduce a range of published experimental results. These include (i) the existence of two-point oscillatory temporal cross correlations with zero time lag between neurons with similar OP; (ii) the influence of spatial separation of neurons on the strength of the correlations; and (iii) the effects of differing stimulus orientations. They go beyond prior work by incorporating experimentally observed patchy projection patterns to predict the 2D correlation structure including both OP and ocular dominance effects, thereby relaxing assumptions of translational invariance implicit in prior one-dimensional analysis.

Smaller visual arrays are harder to integrate in schizophrenia: Evidence for impaired lateral connections in early vision

Long-range horizontal connections in early vision undergird a well-studied "collinear facilitation" effect, wherein a central low-contrast target becomes more detectable when flanked by collinear elements. Collinear facilitation is weaker in schizophrenia. Might lateral connections be responsible? To consider the possibility, we had 38 schizophrenia patients and 49 well-matched healthy controls judge the presence of a central low-contrast element flanked by collinear or orthogonal high-contrast elements.   The display (target+flankers) was scaled in size to produce a lower and higher spatial frequency ("SF") condition (4 and 10 cycles/deg, respectively).  Larger stimulus arrays bias processing towards feedback connections from higher-order visual areas; smaller arrays bias processing toward lateral connections. Patients had impaired facilitation relative to controls at higher but not lower SFs. Combining data from a past study on "contour integration" (in which subjects sought to detect chains of co-circular elements), we found correlated integration and facilitation performance at the higher SF and a similar effect of spatial scaling across SF, suggesting a common mechanism. In an exploratory analysis, worse contrast thresholds (without facilitation) correlated strongly with more premorbid dysfunction. In schizophrenia, inter-element filling-in worsens at smaller spatial scales potentially because of its increased reliance on impaired lateral connections in early vision.

Reference-Free Quality Assessment of Sonar Images via Contour Degradation Measurement

Sonar imagery plays a significant role in oceanic applications since there is little natural light underwater, and light is irrelevant to sonar imaging. Sonar images are very likely to be affected by various distortions during the process of transmission via the underwater acoustic channel for further analysis. At the receiving end, the reference image is unavailable due to the complex and changing underwater environment and our unfamiliarity with it. To the best of our knowledge, one of the important usages of sonar images is target recognition on the basis of contour information. The contour degradation degree for a sonar image is relevant to the distortions contained in it. To this end, we developed a new no-reference contour degradation measurement for perceiving the quality of sonar images. The sparsities of a series of transform coefficient matrices, which are descriptive of contour information, are first extracted as features from the frequency and spatial domains. The contour degradation degree for a sonar image is then measured by calculating the ratios of extracted features before and after filtering this sonar image. Finally, a bootstrap aggregating (bagging)-based support vector regression module is learned to capture the relationship between the contour degradation degree and the sonar image quality. The results of experiments validate that the proposed metric is competitive with the state-of-the-art reference-based quality metrics and outperforms the latest reference-free competitors.

Early-Stage Vision and Perceptual Imagery in Autism Spectrum Conditions

Autism spectrum conditions (ASC) are characterized by multifaceted alterations in visual perception and mental imagery. However, the interaction between early-stage visual perception and imagery has not been explored. We recruited 40 individuals with ASC and 20 neurotypical control volunteers to participate in a lateral masking task. Participants detected a luminance-contrast target pattern (Gabor patch) flanked by two collinear masks. The flanking masks inhibit target detection at small target-mask distances and facilitate target detection at intermediate target-mask distances. In the perceptual task, the masks appeared adjacent to the target. In the imagery task, participants imagined the masks immediately after seeing them. Results revealed that individuals with ASC characterized by exceptional visuoconstructional abilities (enhanced Block Design performance; n = 20) showed weaker inhibition at small target-mask distances and stronger facilitation at intermediate target-mask distances relative to the controls. Visual imagery was markedly dampened in ASC regardless of the visuoconstructional abilities. At the behavioral level, these results indicate increased facilitation via lateral connections in the primary visual cortex (V1) of individuals with ASC who exhibit exceptional visuoconstructional abilities, together with less efficient mental imagery.

Edge-Enhanced Disruptive Camouflage Impairs Shape Discrimination

Disruptive colouration (DC) is a form of camouflage comprised of areas of pigmentation across a target's surface that form false edges, which are said to impede detection by disguising the outline of the target. In nature, many species with DC also exhibit edge enhancement (EE); light areas have lighter edges and dark areas have darker edges. EE DC has been shown to undermine not only localisation but also identification of targets, even when they are not hidden (Sharman, Moncrieff, & Lovell, 2018). We use a novel task, where participants judge which "snake" is more "wiggly," to measure shape discrimination performance for three colourations (uniform, DC, and EE DC) and two backgrounds (leafy and uniform). We show that EE DC impairs shape discrimination even when targets are not hidden in a textured background. We suggest that this mechanism may contribute to misidentification of EE DC targets.

The processing of compound radial frequency patterns

Radial frequency (RF) patterns can be combined to construct complex shapes. Previous studies have suggested that such complex shapes may be encoded by multiple, narrowly-tuned RF shape channels. To test this hypothesis, thresholds were measured for detection and discrimination of various combinations of two RF components. Results show evidence of summation: sensitivity for the compounds was better than that for the components, with little effect of the components' relative phase. If both RF components are processed separately at the point of detection, they would combine by probability summation (PS), resulting in only a small increase in sensitivity for the compound compared to the components. Summation exceeding the prediction of PS suggests a form of additive summation (AS) by a common mechanism. Data were compared to predictions of winner-take-all, where only the strongest component contributes to detection, a single channel AS model, and multi-channel PS and AS models. The multi-channel PS and AS models were modelled under both Fixed and Matched Attention Window scenarios, the former assuming a single internal noise source for both components and compounds or different internal noise sources for components and compounds respectively. The winner-take-all and single channel models could be rejected. Of the remaining models, the best performing one was an AS model with a Fixed Attention Window, consistent with detection being mediated by channels that are efficiently combined and limited by a single source of noise for both components and compounds.

Evaluating spatiotemporal interactions between shapes

Spatiotemporal interactions between stimuli can alter the perceived curvature along the outline of a shape (Habak, Wilkinson, Zakher, & Wilson, 2004; Habak, Wilkinson, & Wilson, 2006). To better understand these interactions, we used a forward and backward masking paradigm with radial frequency (RF) contours while measuring RF detection thresholds. In Experiment 1, we presented a mask alongside a target contour and altered the stimulus onset asynchrony between this target-mask pair and a temporal mask. We found that a temporal mask increased thresholds when it preceded the target-mask stimulus by 130-180 ms but decreased thresholds when it followed the target-stimulus mask by 180 ms. Furthermore, Experiment 2 demonstrated that the effects of temporal and spatial masks are approximately additive. We discuss these findings in relation to theories of transient and sustained channels in vision.

A shape-level flanker facilitation effect in contour integration and the role of shape complexity

The detection of an object in the visual field requires the visual system to integrate a variety of local features into a single object. How these local processes and their global integration is influenced by the presence of other shapes in the visual field is poorly understood. The detectability (contour integration) of a central target object in the form of a two dimensional Gaborized contour was compared in the presence or absence of nearby surrounding objects. A 2-AFC staircase procedure added orientation jitter to the constituent Gabor patches to determine the detectability of the target contour. The set of contours was generated using shape profiles of everyday objects and geometric forms. Experiment 1 examined the effect of three types of congruencies between the target and two flanking contours (contour shape, symmetry and familiarity). Experiment 2 investigated the effect of varying the number and spatial positions of the flankers. In addition, a measure of shape complexity (reciprocal of shape compactness) was used to assess the effects of contour complexity on detection. Across both experiments the detectability of the target contour increased when the target and flanker had the same shape and this was related to both the number of flankers and the complexity of the target shapes. Another factor that modulated this shape-level flanker facilitation effect was the presence of symmetry. The overall results are consistent with a contour integration process in which the visual system incorporates contextual information to extract the most likely smooth contour within a noise field.

Scotopic contour and shape discrimination using radial frequency patterns

Radial frequency (RF) patterns are valuable tools for investigations of contour integration and shape discrimination. Under photopic conditions, healthy observers can detect deformations from circularity in RF patterns as small as 3 seconds of arc. Such fine discrimination may be facilitated by cortical curvature detectors or global shape-detecting mechanisms that favor a closed contour. Rods make up 95% of photoreceptors in the retina, but we know very little about how spatial information is processed by rod-mediated pathways. We measured scotopic radial deformation discrimination using both full and partly occluded RF pattern stimuli. We found radial deformation thresholds of around 2–3 minutes of arc for stimuli with a wide range of radii and RFs. When parts of the stimulus were occluded, scotopic thresholds improved up to the point that three or four cycles of modulation were visible; no further improvement occurred with the addition of more visible cycles. When only one to three cycles were visible, an increase in curvature per cycle became important, allowing observers to detect smaller deformations from circularity. Our results indicate that the scotopic radial deformation thresholds for the stimuli tested are not dependent on global circularity cues but are instead mediated by local curvature cues.

Radial frequency patterns describe a small and perceptually distinct subset of all possible planar shapes

The visual system is exposed to a vast number of shapes and objects. Yet, human object recognition is effortless, fast and largely independent of naturally occurring transformations such as position and scale. The precise mechanisms of shape encoding are still largely unknown. Radial frequency (RF) patterns are a special class of closed contours defined by modulation of a circle's radius. These patterns have been frequently and successfully used as stimuli in vision science to investigate aspects of shape processing. Given their mathematical properties, RF patterns can not represent any arbitrary shape, but the ability to generate more complex, biologically relevant, shapes depicting the outlines of objects such as fruits or human heads raises the possibility that RF patterns span a representative subset of possible shapes. However, this assumption has not been tested before. Here we show that only a small fraction of all possible shapes can be represented by RF patterns and that this small fraction is perceptually distinct from the general class of all possible shapes. Specifically, we derive a general measure for the distance of a given shape's outline from the set of RF patterns, allowing us to scan large numbers of object outlines automatically. We find that only between 1% and 6% of naturally smooth outlines can be exactly represented by RF patterns. We present results from a visual search experiment, which revealed that searching an RF pattern among non-radial frequency patterns is efficient, whereas searching an RF pattern among other RF patterns is inefficient (and vice versa). These results suggest that RF patterns represent only a restricted subset of possible planar shapes and that results obtained with this special class of stimuli can not simply be expected to generalise to any arbitrary planar shape.

Image-Based Aspect Ratio Selection

Selecting a good aspect ratio is crucial for effective 2D diagrams. There are several aspect ratio selection methods for function plots and line charts, but only few can handle general, discrete diagrams such as 2D scatter plots. However, these methods either lack a perceptual foundation or heavily rely on intermediate isoline representations, which depend on choosing the right isovalues and are time-consuming to compute. This paper introduces a general image-based approach for selecting aspect ratios for a wide variety of 2D diagrams, ranging from scatter plots and density function plots to line charts. Our approach is derived from Federer's co-area formula and a line integral representation that enable us to directly construct image-based versions of existing selection methods using density fields. In contrast to previous methods, our approach bypasses isoline computation, so it is faster to compute, while following the perceptual foundation to select aspect ratios. Furthermore, this approach is complemented by an anisotropic kernel density estimation to construct density fields, allowing us to more faithfully characterize data patterns, such as the subgroups in scatterplots or dense regions in time series. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach by quantitatively comparing to previous methods and revisiting a prior user study. Finally, we present extensions for ROI banking, multi-scale banking, and the application to image data.

Biologically Inspired Hierarchical Contour Detection with Surround Modulation and Neural Connection

Contour is a very important feature in biological visual cognition and has been extensively investigated as a fundamental vision problem. In connection with the limitations of conventional models in detecting image contours in complex scenes, a hierarchical image contour extraction method is proposed based on the biological vision mechanism that draws on the perceptual characteristics of the early vision for features such as edges, shapes, and colours. By simulating the information processing mechanisms of the cells’ receptive fields in the early stages of the biological visual system, we put forward a computational model that combines feedforward, lateral, and feedback neural connections to decode and obtain the image contours. Our model simulations and their results show that the established hierarchical contour detection model can adequately fit the characteristics of the biological experiment, quickly and effectively detect the salient contours in complex scenes, and better suppress the unwanted textures.

Prior object-knowledge sharpens properties of early visual feature-detectors

Early stages of visual processing are carried out by neural circuits activated by simple and specific features, such as the orientation of an edge. A fundamental question in human vision is how the brain organises such intrinsically local information into meaningful properties of objects. Classic models of visual processing emphasise a one-directional flow of information from early feature-detectors to higher-level information-processing. By contrast to this view, and in line with predictive-coding models of perception, here, we provide evidence from human vision that high-level object representations dynamically interact with the earliest stages of cortical visual processing. In two experiments, we used ambiguous stimuli that, depending on the observer’s prior object-knowledge, can be perceived as either coherent objects or as a collection of meaningless patches. By manipulating object knowledge we were able to determine its impact on processing of low-level features while keeping sensory stimulation identical. Both studies demonstrate that perception of local features is facilitated in a manner consistent with an observer’s high-level object representation (i.e., with no effect on object-inconsistent features). Our results cannot be ascribed to attentional influences. Rather, they suggest that high-level object representations interact with and sharpen early feature-detectors, optimising their performance for the current perceptual context.

Spatial vision in older adults: perceptual changes and neural bases

PURPOSE

The number of older adults is rapidly increasing internationally, leading to a significant increase in research on how healthy ageing impacts vision. Most clinical assessments of spatial vision involve simple detection (letter acuity, grating contrast sensitivity, perimetry). However, most natural visual environments are more spatially complicated, requiring contrast discrimination, and the delineation of object boundaries and contours, which are typically present on non-uniform backgrounds. In this review we discuss recent research that reports on the effects of normal ageing on these more complex visual functions, specifically in the context of recent neurophysiological studies.

RECENT FINDINGS

Recent research has concentrated on understanding the effects of healthy ageing on neural responses within the visual pathway in animal models. Such neurophysiological research has led to numerous, subsequently tested, hypotheses regarding the likely impact of healthy human ageing on specific aspects of spatial vision.

SUMMARY

Healthy normal ageing impacts significantly on spatial visual information processing from the retina through to visual cortex. Some human data validates that obtained from studies of animal physiology, however some findings indicate that rethinking of presumed neural substrates is required. Notably, not all spatial visual processes are altered by age. Healthy normal ageing impacts significantly on some spatial visual processes (in particular centre-surround tasks), but leaves contrast discrimination, contrast adaptation, and orientation discrimination relatively intact. The study of older adult vision contributes to knowledge of the brain mechanisms altered by the ageing process, can provide practical information regarding visual environments that older adults may find challenging, and may lead to new methods of assessing visual performance in clinical environments.

Curvature Blindness Illusion

We report a novel illusion––curvature blindness illusion: a wavy line is perceived as a zigzag line. The following are required for this illusion to occur. First, the luminance contrast polarity of the wavy line against the background is reversed at the turning points. Second, the curvature of the wavy line is somewhat low; the right angle is too steep to be perceived as an illusion. This illusion implies that, in order to perceive a gentle curve, it is necessary to satisfy more conditions––constant contrast polarity––than perceiving an obtuse corner. It is notable that observers exactly “see” an illusory zigzag line against a physically wavy line, rather than have an impaired perception. We propose that the underlying mechanisms for the gentle curve perception and those of obtuse corner perception are competing with each other in an imbalanced way and the percepts of corner might be dominant in the visual system.

Adaptation to Skew Distortions of Natural Scenes and Retinal Specificity of Its Aftereffects

Image skew is one of the prominent distortions that exist in optical elements, such as in spectacle lenses. The present study evaluates adaptation to image skew in dynamic natural images. Moreover, the cortical levels involved in skew coding were probed using retinal specificity of skew adaptation aftereffects. Left and right skewed natural image sequences were shown to observers as adapting stimuli. The point of subjective equality (PSE), i.e., the skew amplitude in simple geometrical patterns that is perceived to be unskewed, was used to quantify the aftereffect of each adapting skew direction. The PSE, in a two-alternative forced choice paradigm, shifted toward the adapting skew direction. Moreover, significant adaptation aftereffects were obtained not only at adapted, but also at non-adapted retinal locations during fixation. Skew adaptation information was transferred partially to non-adapted retinal locations. Thus, adaptation to skewed natural scenes induces coordinated plasticity in lower and higher cortical areas of the visual pathway.

Object Recognition in Mental Representations: Directions for Exploring Diagnostic Features through Visual Mental Imagery

One of the fundamental goals of object recognition research is to understand how a cognitive representation produced from the output of filtered and transformed sensory information facilitates efficient viewer behavior. Given that mental imagery strongly resembles perceptual processes in both cortical regions and subjective visual qualities, it is reasonable to question whether mental imagery facilitates cognition in a manner similar to that of perceptual viewing: via the detection and recognition of distinguishing features. Categorizing the feature content of mental imagery holds potential as a reverse pathway by which to identify the components of a visual stimulus which are most critical for the creation and retrieval of a visual representation. This review will examine the likelihood that the information represented in visual mental imagery reflects distinctive object features thought to facilitate efficient object categorization and recognition during perceptual viewing. If it is the case that these representational features resemble their sensory counterparts in both spatial and semantic qualities, they may well be accessible through mental imagery as evaluated through current investigative techniques. In this review, methods applied to mental imagery research and their findings are reviewed and evaluated for their efficiency in accessing internal representations, and implications for identifying diagnostic features are discussed. An argument is made for the benefits of combining mental imagery assessment methods with diagnostic feature research to advance the understanding of visual perceptive processes, with suggestions for avenues of future investigation.

Rejecting probability summation for radial frequency patterns, not so Quick!

Radial frequency (RF) patterns are used to assess how the visual system processes shape. They are thought to be detected globally. This is supported by studies that have found summation for RF patterns to be greater than what is possible if the parts were being independently detected and performance only then improved with an increasing number of cycles by probability summation between them. However, the model of probability summation employed in these previous studies was based on High Threshold Theory (HTT), rather than Signal Detection Theory (SDT). We conducted rating scale experiments to investigate the receiver operating characteristics. We find these are of the curved form predicted by SDT, rather than the straight lines predicted by HTT. This means that to test probability summation we must use a model based on SDT. We conducted a set of summation experiments finding that thresholds decrease as the number of modulated cycles increases at approximately the same rate as previously found. As this could be consistent with either additive or probability summation, we performed maximum-likelihood fitting of a set of summation models (Matlab code provided in our Supplementary material) and assessed the fits using cross validation. We find we are not able to distinguish whether the responses to the parts of an RF pattern are combined by additive or probability summation, because the predictions are too similar. We present similar results for summation between separate RF patterns, suggesting that the summation process there may be the same as that within a single RF.

Imagining circles--Empirical data and a perceptual model for the arc-size illusion

An essential part of visual object recognition is the evaluation of the curvature of both an object's outline as well as the contours on its surface. We studied a striking illusion of visual curvature--the arc-size illusion (ASI)--to gain insight into the visual coding of curvature. In the ASI, short arcs are perceived as flatter (less curved) compared to longer arcs of the same radius. We investigated if and how the ASI depends on (i) the physical size of the stimulus and (ii) on the length of the arc. Our results show that perceived curvature monotonically increases with arc length up to an arc angle of about 60°, thereafter remaining constant and equal to the perceived curvature of a full circle. We investigated if the misjudgment of curvature in the ASI translates into predictable biases for three other perceptual tasks: (i) judging the position of the centre of circular arcs; (ii) judging if two circular arcs fall on the circumference of the same (invisible) circle and (iii) interpolating the position of a point on the circumference of a circle defined by two circular arcs. We found that the biases in all the above tasks were reliably predicted by the same bias mediating the ASI. We present a simple model, based on the central angle subtended by an arc, that captures the data for all tasks. Importantly, we argue that the ASI and related biases are a consequence of the fact that an object's curvature is perceived as constant with viewing distance, in other words is perceptually scale invariant.

Behavioral evidence for a functional link between low- and mid-level visual perception in the autism spectrum

BACKGROUND

Most investigations of visuo-perceptual abilities in the Autism Spectrum (AS) are level-specific, using tasks that selectively solicit either lower- (i.e., spatial frequency sensitivity), mid- (i.e., pattern discrimination) or higher-level processes (i.e., face identification) along the visual hierarchy. Less is known about how alterations at one level of processing (i.e., low-level) interact with that of another (i.e., mid-level). The aim of this study was to assess whether manipulating the physical properties (luminance vs texture) of local contour elements of a mid-level, visual pattern interferes with the discrimination of that pattern in a differential manner for individuals with AS.

METHODS

Twenty-nine AS individuals and thirty control participants (range 14-27 years) were asked to discriminate between perfect circles and Radial Frequency Patterns (RFP) of two, three, five, and 10 radial frequencies (RF), or deformations along the pattern's contour. When RFP have few deformations (<five RF), a global, pattern analysis is needed for shape discrimination. Conversely, when RFP contain many deformations (≥10 RF), discrimination is dependent on the analysis of local deformations along the RFP contour. The effect of manipulating RF on RFP discrimination was assessed for RFP whose local contour elements were defined by either luminance or texture information, the latter previously found less efficiently processed in AS individuals.

RESULTS

Two separate mixed factorial ANOVAs [2 (Group)×4 (RF)] were conducted on mean deformation thresholds for luminance- and texture-defined conditions. A significant Group×RF interaction was found for the luminance-defined condition where thresholds were higher in the AS group for the two and three RF conditions; no between-group differences were found for the five and 10 RF conditions. A significant main effect of group was identified for the texture-defined condition, where mean thresholds were higher for the AS group across all RF conditions assessed (two, three, five and 10); a Group×RF interaction effect was not found. Performance for each RFP condition was not affected across group by either chronological age or intelligence, as measured by either Weschler scales or Raven Progressive Matrices.

CONCLUSIONS

The ability of AS individuals to discriminate a circular pattern is differentially affected by the availability (number of deformations along the RFP contour) and type (luminance vs texture) of local, low-level elements defining its contour. Performance is unaffected in AS when RFP discrimination is dependent on the analysis of local deformations of luminance-defined contour elements, but decreased across all RF conditions when local contour elements are texture-defined. These results suggest that efficient pattern perception in AS is functionally related to the efficacy with which its local elements are processed, indicative of an early origin for altered mid-level, pattern perception in AS.
