Mechanism and application of bacterial exopolysaccharides: An advanced approach for sustainable heavy metal abolition from soil

The escalation of heavy metal pollutants in soils and effluents, driven by industrialization and human activities, poses significant environmental and health risks. Conventional remediation methods are often costly and ineffective, prompting a shift towards sustainable alternatives such as biological treatments. Natural biosorbents, including microbial cells and their byproducts, have emerged as promising solutions. One such approach involves leveraging exopolysaccharides (EPS), complex high-molecular-weight biopolymers synthesized by microbes under environmental stress conditions. EPS are intricate organic macromolecules comprising proteins, polysaccharides, uronic acids, humic compounds, and lipids, either located within microbial cells or secreted into their surroundings. Their anionic functional groups enable efficient electrostatic binding of cationic heavy metals, making EPS effective biosorbents for soil remediation. This review thoroughly explores the pivotal role of bacterial EPS in the removal of heavy metals, focusing on EPS biosynthesis mechanisms, the dynamics of interaction with heavy metals, and case studies that illustrate their effectiveness in practical remediation strategies. By highlighting these aspects, the review underscores the innovation and practical implications of EPS-based bioremediation technologies, demonstrating their potential to address critical environmental challenges effectively while paving the way for sustainable environmental management practices. Key findings reveal that EPS exhibit robust metal-binding capacities, facilitated by their anionic functional groups, thereby offering a promising solution for mitigating metal pollution in diverse environmental matrices.

Photoreduced Ag+/sodium alginate supramolecular hydrogel as a sensitive SERS membrane substrate for rapid detection of uranyl ions

BACKGROUND

In the fields of environmental monitoring and nuclear emergency, in order to obtain the relevant information of uranyl-induced environmental pollution and nuclear accident, it is necessary to establish a rapid quantitative analytical technique for uranyl ions. As a new promising technique, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is hopeful to achieve this goal. However, uranyl ions are easily desorbed from SERS substrates under acidic conditions, and the structures of SERS substrates will be destroyed in the strong acidic aqueous solutions. Besides, the quantitative detection ability of SERS for uranyl ions needs to be promoted. Hence, it is necessary to develop new SERS substrates for accurate quantitative detection of trace uranyl in environmental water samples, especially in acidic solutions.

RESULTS

In this work, we prepared silver ions/sodium alginate supramolecular hydrogel membrane (Ag+/SA SMH membrane), and the Ag+ ions from the membrane were transformed into Ag/Ag2O complex nanoparticles under laser irradiation. The Raman signal of uranyl was strongly enhanced under the synergistic interaction of electromagnetic enhancement derived from the Ag nanoparticles and charge transfer enhancement between uranyl and Ag2O. Utilizing the peak of SA (550 cm-1) as an internal standard, a quantitative detection with a LOD of 6.7 × 10-9 mol L-1 was achieved due to a good linear relation of uranyl concentrations from 1.0 × 10-8 mol L-1 to 2 × 10-6 mol L-1. Furthermore, foreign metal ions hardly affected the SERS detection of uranyl, and the substrate could determine trace uranyl in natural water samples. Particularly, the acidity had no obvious effect on SERS signals of uranyl ions. Therefore, in addition to the detection of uranyl ions in natural water samples, the proposed strategy could also detect uranyl ions in strong acidic solutions.

SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY

A simple one-step method was used to prepare an Ag+/SA SMH membrane for rapid quantitative detection of uranyl ions for the first time. The proposed substrate successfully detected uranyl ions under acidic conditions by immobilizing uranyl ion in hydrogel structure. In comparison with the previous studies, a more accurate quantitative analysis for uranyl ions was achieved by using an internal standard, and the proposed strategy could determine trace uranyl in either natural water samples or strong acidic solutions.

Progress in the Sustainable Development of Biobased (Nano)materials for Application in Water Treatment Technologies

Water pollution remains a widespread problem, affecting the health and wellbeing of people around the globe. While current advancements in wastewater treatment and desalination show promise, there are still challenges that need to be overcome to make these technologies commercially viable. Nanotechnology plays a pivotal role in water purification and desalination processes today. However, the release of nanoparticles (NPs) into the environment without proper safeguards can lead to both physical and chemical toxicity. Moreover, many methods of NP synthesis are expensive and not environmentally sustainable. The utilization of biomass as a source for the production of NPs has the potential to mitigate issues pertaining to cost, sustainability, and pollution. The utilization of biobased nanomaterials (bio-NMs) sourced from biomass has garnered attention in the field of water purification due to their cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. Several research studies have been conducted to efficiently produce NPs (both inorganic and organic) from biomass for applications in wastewater treatment. Biosynthesized materials such as zinc oxide NPs, phytogenic magnetic NPs, biopolymer-coated metal NPs, cellulose nanocrystals, and silver NPs, among others, have demonstrated efficacy in enhancing the process of water purification. The utilization of environmentally friendly NPs presents a viable option for enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of water pollution eradication. The present review delves into the topic of biomass, its origins, and the methods by which it can be transformed into NPs utilizing an environmentally sustainable approach. The present study will examine the utilization of greener NPs in contemporary wastewater and desalination technologies.

Pyrolysis of Specific Non-Recyclable Waste Materials: Energy Recovery and Detailed Product Characteristics

This study explores the pyrolysis process applied to various non-utilized waste materials, specifically focusing on separated plastics from municipal waste, wood waste (including pallets and window frames), paper rejects, and automotive carpets. Different combinations of these waste materials were subjected to pyrolysis, a process involving high-temperature treatment (600 °C) in a nitrogen atmosphere. The resulting products, including biochar, gas, and liquid fractions, as well as the residual waste materials, underwent comprehensive analysis. The evaluation of pyrolysis products emphasizes their quality, energy content, and potential applications. Notably, the pyrolysis gas derived from the combination of separated municipal plastics and waste wood exhibited the highest calorific value at 49.45 MJ/m3. Additionally, Mixture 2, consisting of plastic and wood waste, demonstrated the highest calorific value for the pyrolysis condensate, reaching 30.62 MJ/kg. Moreover, Mixture 3, benefiting from biochar utilization as a sorbent, displayed the highest iodine value at 90.01 mg/g.

Biomass conversion and radiocaesium (Rad-Cs) leaching behaviors of radioactive grass in anaerobic wet fermentation systems: Effects of pre-treatments

Persistent concerns regarding environmental hazards arise from the difficulty in disposing of radioactive plant-based wastes originating from the nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FNPP) in Japan in 2011. In this study, three anaerobic digestion (AD) strategies were proposed: Sole anaerobic wet fermentation, and wet fermentations with either alkaline-heat or ultrasonic pre-treatment, which were employed for long-term anaerobic treatment of a genuine radioactive grass stemming from the FNPP accident. The objectives of this work are to investigate the effects of pre-treatments on biomass conversion efficiency and to gain insight into the leaching behavior of radiocaesium (Rad-Cs) within AD processes. Experimental results indicate that by introducing alkaline-heat and ultrasonic pre-treatments to AD systems, the removal efficiencies of total solids (TS) from the raw grass increased by 60.8 % and 42.5 %, respectively, compared to sole wet fermentation. Pre-treatments have been shown to enhance the stability of AD systems, both in terms of enhancing methane production and mitigating pH fluctuations triggered by the accumulation of organic acids. Remarkably, even though the Rad-Cs leaching rate was highest when the AD system was fed with the alkaline-heat pre-treated grass, it remained unsatisfactory at only 5.77 %. We inadvertently isolated a soil-like component from the raw grass, and analyzed both its proportion in the raw grass and the radioactivity intensity. The results indicate that although the soil constituted only 9.51 % TS of the raw grass, it accounted for a significant 81.35 % of the total radioactivity. The soil, which has a pronounced affinity for ionic Cs, being mixed into the raw grass, was identified as the primary factor limiting the leaching efficiency of Rad-Cs throughout both the pre-treatment and wet fermentation phases.

Sunflower-like missing-linker covalent organic framework for efficient extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

As excellent crystalline materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are widely used in drug adsorption. In this work, a defective engineering strategy was proposed for designing and preparing the functionalized end-capping monomer and missing-linker COFs. The missing-linker COF 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde compound with glycidyltrimethyl ammonium chloride modified benzene-1,4-diamine (TpPa-GTA) was synthesized through Schiff base reaction with wide pore size distribution for adsorption of four nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the four drugs reached adsorption equilibrium within 10 min. The sunflower-like structure helps to promote intraparticle diffusion during the adsorption process, thereby realizing the rapid adsorption of TpPa-GTA. The equilibrium isotherms fit well with both the Freundlich and Langmuir models, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 83.3-315 mg g-1 calculated from the Langmuir model. Based on the detection results of Zeta potential and XPS, the adsorption mechanism was inferred, and the rapid capture of NSAIDs in the wide pH range of 4.0 to 7.5 was realized under electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interaction. The detection of lake and river samples using the missing adapter TpPa-GTA has a recovery rate of 84.2-117%, which provides a new approach to the adsorption of pollutants with COFs.

Effective adsorption of Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution onto ZSM-5 zeolite synthesized from Vietnamese bentonite clay

ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully synthesized from bentonite clay sourced from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, using the hydrothermal method at 170 °C for 18 h. The synthesized ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 ratio ~ 34) exhibited a single phase with high crystallinity (91.8%), and a clear and uniform shape. In a detailed examination of the synthesized material's Pb(II) adsorptive capacity, various factors were taken into account, including pH, interaction time, ionic strength, and the amount of adsorbent. Isotherms and kinetics were examined to elucidate the uptake behavior. Study results suggested that Pb(II) ion uptake by ZSM-5 was most appropriately described by the Sips isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The calculated maximum monolayer adsorption capacity according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 48.36 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) on ZSM-5 involving electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and diffusion into pores were demonstrated using the analytical techniques before and after Pb(II) adsorption. These findings demonstrate that ZSM-5 synthesized from bentonite clay exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity for Pb(II), resulting in promising applications for treating drinking water or aqueous industrial waste containing Pb(II) ions.

Water Quality Degradation Due to Heavy Metal Contamination: Health Impacts and Eco-Friendly Approaches for Heavy Metal Remediation

Water quality depends on its physicochemical and biological parameters. Changes in parameters such as pH, temperature, and essential and non-essential trace metals in water can render it unfit for human use. Moreover, the characteristics of the local environment, geological processes, geochemistry, and hydrological properties of water sources also affect water quality. Generally, groundwater is utilized for drinking purposes all over the globe. The surface is also utilized for human use and industrial purposes. There are several natural and anthropogenic activities responsible for the heavy metal contamination of water. Industrial sources, including coal washery, steel industry, food processing industry, plastic processing, metallic work, leather tanning, etc., are responsible for heavy metal contamination in water. Domestic and agricultural waste is also responsible for hazardous metallic contamination in water. Contaminated water with heavy metal ions like Cr (VI), Cd (II), Pb (II), As (V and III), Hg (II), Ni (II), and Cu (II) is responsible for several health issues in humans, like liver failure, kidney damage, gastric and skin cancer, mental disorders and harmful effects on the reproductive system. Hence, the evaluation of heavy metal contamination in water and its removal is needed. There are several physicochemical methods that are available for the removal of heavy metals from water, but these methods are expensive and generate large amounts of secondary pollutants. Biological methods are considered cost-effective and eco-friendly methods for the remediation of metallic contaminants from water. In this review, we focused on water contamination with toxic heavy metals and their toxicity and eco-friendly bioremediation approaches.

Plants, animals, and fisheries waste-mediated bioremediation of contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs)-a circular bioresource utilization approach

The release of contaminants of environmental concern including heavy metals and metalloids, and contaminants of emerging concern including organic micropollutants from processing industries, pharmaceuticals, personal care, and anthropogenic sources, is a growing threat worldwide. Mitigating inorganic and organic contaminants, which can be coined as contaminants of environmental and emerging concern (CEECs), is a big challenge as traditional physicochemical processes are not economically viable for managing mixed contaminants of low concentrations. As a result, low-cost materials must be designed to provide high CEEC removal efficiency. One of the environmentally viable and energy-efficient approaches is biosorption, which involves using biomass or biopolymers isolated from plants or animals to decontaminate heavy metals in contaminated environments using inherent biological mechanisms. Among chemical constituents in plant biomass, cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose, proteins, polysaccharides, phenolic compounds, and animal biomass include polysaccharides and other compounds to bind heavy metals covalently and non-covalently. These functional groups include carboxyl, hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, amine, and sulfhydryl. Cation-exchange capacities of these bioadsorbents can be improved by applying chemical modifications. The relevance of chemical constituents and bioactives in biosorbents derived from agricultural production such as food and fodder crops, bioenergy and cash crops, fruit and vegetable crops, medicinal and aromatic plants, plantation trees, aquatic and terrestrial weeds, and animal production such as dairy, goatery, poultry, duckery, and fisheries is highlighted in this comprehensive review for sequestering and bioremediation of CEECs, including as many as ten different heavy metals and metalloids co-contaminated with other organic micropollutants in circular bioresource utilization and one-health concepts.

A Comprehensive Review of the Current Progress of Chromium Removal Methods from Aqueous Solution

Chromium (Cr) exists in aqueous solution as trivalent (Cr³⁺) and hexavalent (Cr⁶⁺) forms. Cr³⁺ is an essential trace element while Cr⁶⁺ is a dangerous and carcinogenic element, which is of great concern globally due to its extensive applications in various industrial processes such as textiles, manufacturing of inks, dyes, paints, and pigments, electroplating, stainless steel, leather, tanning, and wood preservation, among others. Cr³⁺ in wastewater can be transformed into Cr⁶⁺ when it enters the environment. Therefore, research on Cr remediation from water has attracted much attention recently. A number of methods such as adsorption, electrochemical treatment, physico-chemical methods, biological removal, and membrane filtration have been devised for efficient Cr removal from water. This review comprehensively demonstrated the Cr removal technologies in the literature to date. The advantages and disadvantages of Cr removal methods were also described. Future research directions are suggested and provide the application of adsorbents for Cr removal from waters.

Application of response surface methodology and box-behnken design for the optimization of mercury removal by Ulva sp

Mercury (Hg) is a global and top priority contaminant, toxic at low concentrations. Although it has been progressively eliminated from processes, this metal continues to circulate in the atmosphere, soil, and water. In this work, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) combined with a Box-Behnken Design (3 factors - 3 levels) was used to optimize key operational conditions that influence the removal and uptake of Hg by living macroalga Ulva sp. in a complex mixture containing several elements used in industry (potentially toxic elements, rare earth elements, and platinum-group elements) (initial concentration 10, 100 and 190 µg/L, salinity 15, 25 and 35, seaweed stock density 1.0, 3.0 and 5.0 g/L). Results evidenced the great capability of Ulva sp. to remove Hg, with removal efficiencies between 69 % and 97 %. 3-D surfaces showed that the most impactful variable was seaweed stock density, with higher densities leading to higher removal. Regarding the uptake, a positive correlation between initial concentration and q_t values was observed. The appliance of RSM made possible to obtain optimal operating conditions for removing virtually 100 % of Hg from waters with high ionic strength, which is a pivotal step in the direction of the application of this remediation biotechnology at large scale.

Heavy Metal Contamination in the Aquatic Ecosystem: Toxicity and Its Remediation Using Eco-Friendly Approaches

Urbanization and industrialization are responsible for environmental contamination in the air, water, and soil. These activities also generate large amounts of heavy metal ions in the environment, and these contaminants cause various types of health issues in humans and other animals. Hexavalent chromium, lead, and cadmium are toxic heavy metal ions that come into the environment through several industrial processes, such as tanning, electroplating, coal mining, agricultural activities, the steel industry, and chrome plating. Several physical and chemical methods are generally used for the heavy metal decontamination of wastewater. These methods have some disadvantages, including the generation of secondary toxic sludge and high operational costs. Hence, there is a need to develop a cost-effective and eco-friendly method for the removal of heavy metal ions from polluted areas. Biological methods are generally considered eco-friendly and cost-effective. This review focuses on heavy metal contamination, its toxicity, and eco-friendly approaches for the removal of heavy metals from contaminated sites.

Bioremediation potential of cadmium by recombinant Escherichia coli surface expressing metallothionein MTT5 from Tetrahymenathermophila

Cadmium (Cd) is a common heavy metal contaminant in industrial wastewater that causes many diseases in humans. Metallothionein (MT), a cysteine-rich metal-binding protein, is well known in chelate-heavy metals. In this study, we expressed MTT5 of Tetrahymena thermophila fused with Lpp-OmpA in the outer membrane of Escherichia coli to determine its ability to accumulate and adsorb Cd. Our results revealed that our recombinant E. coli had a 4.9-fold greater Cd adsorption compared to wild E. coli. Adsorption isothermic analysis demonstrated that the adsorption behavior for Cd in our recombinant bacteria was better fitted into the Freundlich isotherm model than Langmuir isotherm model. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that phosphate and organic phosphate groups were involved in the interaction between Cd and the bacterial surface. Using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, we further showed that the expression of metal-resistance genes (dnaK and clpB) was downregulated due to surface MTT5 protected our recombinant bacteria from Cd²⁺ adsorption. Furthermore, we showed that our recombinant bacteria could adsorb Cd from the contaminated wastewater containing other metals and were suggested to be applied in the field study.

Rare earths stick to rare cyanobacteria: Future potential for bioremediation and recovery of rare earth elements

Biosorption of metal ions by phototrophic microorganisms is regarded as a sustainable and alternative method for bioremediation and metal recovery. In this study, 12 cyanobacterial strains, including 7 terrestrial and 5 aquatic cyanobacteria, covering a broad phylogenetic diversity were investigated for their potential application in the enrichment of rare earth elements through biosorption. A screening for the maximum adsorption capacity of cerium, neodymium, terbium, and lanthanum was conducted in which Nostoc sp. 20.02 showed the highest adsorption capacity with 84.2-91.5 mg g^-1. Additionally, Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973, Calothrix brevissima SAG 34.79, Desmonostoc muscorum 90.03, and Komarekiella sp. 89.12 were promising candidate strains, with maximum adsorption capacities of 69.5-83.4 mg g^-1, 68.6-83.5 mg g^-1, 44.7-70.6 mg g^-1, and 47.2-67.1 mg g^-1 respectively. Experiments with cerium on adsorption properties of the five highest metal adsorbing strains displayed fast adsorption kinetics and a strong influence of the pH value on metal uptake, with an optimum at pH 5 to 6. Studies on binding specificity with mixed-metal solutions strongly indicated an ion-exchange mechanism in which Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺, and Ca²⁺ ions are replaced by other metal cations during the biosorption process. Depending on the cyanobacterial strain, FT-IR analysis indicated the involvement different functional groups like hydroxyl and carboxyl groups during the adsorption process. Overall, the application of cyanobacteria as biosorbent in bioremediation and recovery of rare earth elements is a promising method for the development of an industrial process and has to be further optimized and adjusted regarding metal-containing wastewater and adsorption efficiency by cyanobacterial biomass.

Sodium Alginate/β-Cyclodextrin Reinforced Carbon Nanotubes Hydrogel as Alternative Adsorbent for Nickel(II) Metal Ion Removal

Water pollution issues, particularly those caused by heavy metal ions, have been significantly growing. This paper combined biopolymers such as sodium alginate (SA) and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) to improve adsorption performance with the help of calcium ion as the cross-linked agent. Moreover, the addition of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the hybrid hydrogel matrix was examined. The adsorption of nickel(II) was thoroughly compared between pristine sodium alginate/β-cyclodextrin (SA-β-CD) and sodium alginate/β-cyclodextrin immobilized carbon nanotubes (SA-β-CD/CNTs) hydrogel. Both hydrogels were characterized by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) spectral analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The results showed SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel exhibits excellent thermal stability, high specific surface area and large porosity compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel. Batch experiments were performed to study the effect of several adsorptive variables such as initial concentration, pH, contact time and temperature. The adsorption performance of the prepared SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel was comprehensively reported with maximum percentage removal of up to 79.86% for SA-β-CD/CNTs and 69.54% for SA-β-CD. The optimum adsorption conditions were reported when the concentration of Ni(II) solution was maintained at 100 ppm, pH 5, 303 K, and contacted for 120 min with a 1000 mg dosage. The Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic model are the best fits to describe the adsorption behavior. A thermodynamic study was also performed. The probable interaction mechanisms that enable the successful binding of Ni(II) on hydrogels, including electrostatic attraction, ion exchange, surface complexation, coordination binding and host-guest interaction between the cationic sites of Ni(II) on both SA-β-CD and SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel during the adsorption process, were discussed. The regeneration study also revealed the high efficiency of SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel on four successive cycles compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel. Therefore, this work signifies SA-β-CD/CNTs hydrogel has great potential to remove Ni(II) from an aqueous environment compared with SA-β-CD hydrogel.

Use of COMSOL software for modeling and simulation of copper removal in a dynamic mode on a new biowaste

The main purpose of this investigation is to model the results related to biosorption using COMSOL (Multiphysics 4.3a), and to solve the advection-dispersion equation by using both linear and Langmuir models. A bidimensional model was then proposed to study the mass transfer in the process of copper ions sorption in a dynamic mode on cider vinegar residues. Sorption tests were realized by evaluating the influence of flow rate (0.75, 1, and 2.65 ml min^-1 ), bed height (3.5, 7 and 8.5 cm), and copper initial concentration (169 and 300 mg L^-1 ). For all cases, the mathematical formulation was solved by assuming that the column is homogeneous and the sorption is instantaneous. The corresponding results were exploited through breakthrough curve profiles, where it was shown that the solutions obtained by the "Langmuir COMSOL" model coincide with the experimental values. In contrast, the linear model has been unable to fit them. The optimal results were analyzed by Thomas, Adam-Bohart Yoon Nelson, and Ogata-Bank models, which proves that the Thomas method is well adapted with a satisfactory correlation coefficient (0.93). Further, the model validation was performed by determining the residual root mean square error, which was found less than 0.3, thereby indicating a reasonable concordance between the estimated and experimental points. The high sorption capacity obtained was around of 41.37 mg g^-1 , which suggests that the cider vinegar residues can be exploited as a low-cost, available, and effective sorbent biomass in the field of the treatment of industrial effluents. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Cider vinegar residues (CVR) as low cost biosorbent were studied for continuous biosorption. A successful COMSOL model was proposed and validated. CVR is an effective biosorbent for copper fixed bed biosorption. High sorption capacity was around of 41.37 mg g^-1 under optimal conditions.

Innovative binary sorption of Cobalt(II) and methylene blue by Sargassum latifolium using Taguchi and hybrid artificial neural network paradigms

The present investigation has been designed by Taguchi and hybrid artificial neural network (ANN) paradigms to improve and optimize the binary sorption of Cobalt(II) and methylene blue (MB) from an aqueous solution, depending on modifying physicochemical conditions to generate an appropriate constitution for a highly efficient biosorption by the alga; Sargassum latifolium. Concerning Taguchi's design, the predicted values of the two responses were comparable to actual ones. The biosorption of Cobalt(II) ions was more efficient than MB, the supreme biosorption of Cobalt(II) was verified in run L21 (93.28%), with the highest S/N ratio being 39.40. The highest biosorption of MB was reached in run L22 (74.04%), with a S/N ratio of 37.39. The R2 and adjusted R2 were in reasonable values, indicating the validity of the model. The hybrid ANN model has exclusively emerged herein to optimize the biosorption of both Cobalt(II) and MB simultaneously, therefore, the ANN model was better than the Taguchi design. The predicted values of Cobalt(II) and MB biosorption were more obedience to the ANN model. The SEM analysis of the surface of S. latifolium showed mosaic form with massive particles, as crosslinking of biomolecules of the algal surface in the presence of Cobalt(II) and MB. Viewing FTIR analysis showed active groups e.g., hydroxyl, α, β-unsaturated ester, α, β-unsaturated ketone, N-O, and aromatic amine. To the best of our knowledge, there are no reports deeming the binary sorption of Cobalt(II) and MB ions by S. latifolium during Taguchi orthogonal arrays and hybrid ANN.

Isotherm and kinetics modeling of biosorption and bioreduction of the Cr(VI) by Brachybacterium paraconglomeratum ER41

Chromium is one of the most widely used metals in industry. Hexavalent form [Cr(VI)], which is found in industrial discharges, is very toxic and very soluble in water. From soil taken from an abandoned lead and iron mine, a bacterial strain capable of reducing Cr(VI) was isolated and identified as Brachybacterium paraconglomeratum ER41. Objective of this work was to evaluate the power of this bacterium to reduce Cr(VI). Results obtained showed that this bacterium is capable of eliminating 100 mg/L of Cr(VI) after 48 h (pH 8 and temperature 30 °C). For modeling biosorption kinetics, pseudo-first-order and intraparticle diffusion models gave a better fit. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism conformed well to Langmuir's isothermal model indicating monolayer type sorption. Biomass analysis of this bacterium before and after contact with chromium by scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray and by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the surface ligands of bacterial wall are probably responsible for biosorption and bioreduction process. These results suggest a potential application of B. paraconglomeratum ER41 in bioremediation of polluted discharges.

A re-analysis of NH4+ sorption on biochar: Have expectations been too high?

Sorption of nutrients such as NH₄⁺ is often quoted as a critical property of biochar, explaining its value as a soil amendment and a filter material. However, published values for NH₄⁺ sorption to biochar vary by more than 3 orders of magnitude, without consensus as to the source of this variability. This lack of understanding greatly limits our ability to use quantitative sorption measurements towards product design. Here, our objective was to conduct a quantitative analysis of the sources of variability, and infer which biochar traits are more favourable to high sorption capacity. To do so, we conducted a standardized remodelling exercise of published batch sorption studies using Langmuir sorption isotherm. We excluded studies presenting datasets that either could not be reconciled with the standard Langmuir sorption isotherm or generated clear outliers. Our analysis indicates that the magnitude of sorption capacity of unmodified biochar for NH₄⁺ is lower than previously reported, with a median of 4.2 mg NH₄⁺ g^-1 and a maximum reported sorption capacity of 22.8 mg NH₄⁺ g^-1. Activation resulted in a significant relative improvement in sorption capacity, but absolute improvements remain modest, with a maximum reported sorption of 27.56 mg NH₄⁺ g^-1 for an activated biochar. Methodology appeared to substantially impact sorption estimates, especially practices such as pH control of batch sorption solution and ash removal. Our results highlight some significant challenges in the quantification of NH₄⁺ sorption by biochar and our curated data set provides a potentially valuable scale against which future estimates can be assessed.

Biomass-Derived Anion-Anchoring Nano-CaCO3 Coating for Regulating Ion Transport on Li Metal Surface

The free transport of anions in a Li metal battery can cause multiple issues, including a high anion transference number, space charge, and concentration polarization, eventually leading to uncontrolled dendrite formation and decreased performance. Herein, we report an anion-anchoring nano-CaCO₃ (NC) coating derived from eggshell biowaste for stabilizing Li metal anodes. As the adsorption of local TFSI^- anions onto the NC adsorbent can undermine the anion concentration gradient and promote rapid Li-ion diffusion, it can effectively inhibit the proliferation of Li dendrites assisted by the NC coating. Consequently, Li/Cu cells with NC@Cu electrode can achieve a high Coulombic efficiency of ∼98.4% for more than 420 cycles and can even reach ∼99.1% at an ultrahigh areal capacity of 20 mAh cm^-2. In particular, full cells with NC/Li@Cu electrodes show a stable lifespan of over 240 cycles with an average efficiency of ∼99.8% at a low N/P ratio of ∼3.3.

Pharmaceuticals in the Aquatic Environment: A Review on Eco-Toxicology and the Remediation Potential of Algae

The pollution of the aquatic environment has become a worldwide problem. The widespread use of pesticides, heavy metals and pharmaceuticals through anthropogenic activities has increased the emission of such contaminants into wastewater. Pharmaceuticals constitute a significant class of aquatic contaminants and can seriously threaten the health of non-target organisms. No strict legal regulations on the consumption and release of pharmaceuticals into water bodies have been implemented on a global scale. Different conventional wastewater treatments are not well-designed to remove emerging contaminants from wastewater with high efficiency. Therefore, particular attention has been paid to the phycoremediation technique, which seems to be a promising choice as a low-cost and environment-friendly wastewater treatment. This technique uses macro- or micro-algae for the removal or biotransformation of pollutants and is constantly being developed to cope with the issue of wastewater contamination. The aims of this review are: (i) to examine the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in water, and their toxicity on non-target organisms and to describe the inefficient conventional wastewater treatments; (ii) present cost-efficient algal-based techniques of contamination removal; (iii) to characterize types of algae cultivation systems; and (iv) to describe the challenges and advantages of phycoremediation.

Removal of Iron(II) from Effluents of Steel Mills Using Chemically Modified Pteris vittata Plant Leaves Utilizing the Idea of Phytoremediation

Dargai District Malakand, Pakistan, is a tax-free zone that attracts many industrialists to install their plants in this area. Along with other industries, a number of steel mills are polluting the natural environment of this locality. This study aimed to evaluate heavy metals levels in steel mills effluents and fabricate an efficient adsorbent from the leaves of plants growing on the banks of the drainage lines of the industries and having high phytoremediation capabilities, through chemical modifications. Initially, the effluents were analyzed for heavy metal concentrations, then the leaves of a plant (Pteris vittata) with better phytoremediation capability were chemically modified. The leaves of Pteris vittata were crushed into a fine powder, followed by chemical modification with HNO3, then washed with distilled water, neutralized with NaOH and finally activated through calcium chloride to enhance its biosorption ability, abbreviated as CMPVL. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), surface area analyzer, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) were used to characterize the CMPVL. The modified leaves in the powdered form were then used for the reclamation of Fe(II) present in the effluents of the mentioned industries. Batch biosorption tests were performed under varied physicochemical conditions of pH (2–9), contact time (10–140 min), temperature (293–333 K), biosorbent dose (0.01–0.13 g), and initial metal concentration (20–300 mg L−1) to optimize the removal of the selected metal. Langmuir, Jovanovic, Freundlich, Temkin, and Harkins–Jura isotherm models were used to assess the equilibrium data. With a high R2 value of 0.977, the Langmuir model offered an excellent match to the equilibrium data. The pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, power function, intraparticle diffusion, and Natarajan–Khalaf models were applied to experimental kinetics data. With R2 values of 0.999, the pseudo-second order model well fitted the obtained data. The Van’t Hoff equation was used to calculate ΔH°, ΔS° and ΔG° of Fe(II) sorption on CMPVL. The ∆H° and ∆G° were negative, whereas ΔS° was positive, suggesting that the biosorption process was exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous. The selected plant leaves were found to be efficient in the reclamation of iron from the industrial effluents (as the plant has a high natural capability for remediating the selected metal ion) after chemical modification and may be used as an alternative to activated carbon as being a low-cost material and a high phytoremediator of iron metal. Such natural phenomena of phytoremediation should be utilized in obtaining efficient adsorbents for other metals as well.

The Using of Nanoparticles of Microalgae in Remediation of Toxic Dye from Industrial Wastewater: Kinetic and Isotherm Studies

Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the removal of the toxic Methylene Blue Dye (MBD) from synthetic aqueous solutions using the nanoparticles form of Arthrospira platensis NIOF17/003. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for MBD was investigated using different amounts of A. platensis nanoparticles at different contact times, temperatures, pH, and MBD initial concentrations in the synthetic aqueous solution. In addition, A. platensis nanoparticles were characterized using Electron Microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), and Ultraviolet spectra (UV) techniques. The optimum removal of MBD was found at a concentration of 0.4 g A. platensis nanoparticles. A. platensis nanoparticles remove 93% of MBD in 5 min (under agitation conditions at 150 rpm). The highest adsorption capacity was found by the Langmuir model to be 58.8 mg g⁻¹. It is an endothermic process with spontaneity increasing with temperature. The probable mechanism for the adsorption is chemisorption via surface-active charges in the initial phase, which is followed by physical sorption by occupying pores of A. platensis. MBD adsorption by A. platensis follows pseudo-second-order kinetics. The Freundlich and Langmuir models fit well with the experimental data. The adsorption experiments suggested that the regeneration of the adsorbents was possible for repeated use, especially regarding MBD up to 65.8% after three cycles, which proves it can be easily recycled. In conclusion, the nanoparticles of A. platensis have a significant adsorption potential in the removal of MBD from effluent wastewater.

Removal of Aflatoxins Using Agro-Waste-Based Materials and Current Characterization Techniques Used for Biosorption Assessment

Aflatoxins are the most hazardous fungal-generated secondary metabolites produced by toxigenic Aspergillus species. These toxins are frequently detected in food and feed and impose either acute or chronic effects in humans and animals, causing great public concern. Because of the adverse effects of aflatoxins, many physical, chemical, and biological decontamination approaches have been developed. However, the most commonly used procedure is the addition of adsorbent materials into aflatoxin-contaminated diets to reduce toxin absorption and distribution to blood and target organs. In recent times, sorption technology with agro-waste-based materials has appeared as a promising alternative over conventional binding agents with the benefits of low cost, higher rentability, feasibility, and exceptional efficiencies. This review is mainly focused on discussing the most important agro-waste-based materials able to adsorb aflatoxins such as pomaces, seeds, stems, hulls, peels, leaves, berries, lignins, fibers, weeds, and various horticultural byproducts. Further data of the in vitro, in vivo, and in silico efficacy of these biomaterials to adsorb and then desorb aflatoxins are given. Besides, an overview of the main characterization techniques used to elucidate the most important physical and chemical mechanisms involved in the biosorption is presented. Finally, conclusions and future research necessities are also outlined.

Magnetic responsive mesoporous alginate/β-cyclodextrin polymer beads enhance selectivity and adsorption of heavy metal ions

Mesoporous (~7-8 nm) biopolymer hydrogel beads (HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD) were synthesised via ionic polymerisation route to separate heavy metal ions. The adsorption capacity of HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was higher than that of raw halloysite nano tubes (HNTs), iron nanoparticles (FeNPs), and bare alginate beads. FeNPs induce the magnetic properties of adsorbent and metal-based functional groups in and around the hydrogel beads. The mesoporous surface of the adsorbent permits access of heavy metal ions onto the polymer beads to interact with internal active sites and the mesoporous polymer network. Maximum adsorption capacities of lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and nickel (Ni) were 21.09 mg/g, 15.54 mg/g, 2.47 mg/g, and 2.68 mg/g, respectively. HNTs-FeNPs@Alg/β-CD was able to adsorb heavy metals efficiently (75-99%) under environment-relevant concentrations (200 μg/L) from mixed metal contaminants. The adsorption and selectivity trends of heavy metals were Pb > Cu > Cd > Ni, despite electrostatic binding strength of Cd > Cu > Pb > Ni and covalent binding strength of Pb > Ni > Cu > Cd. It demonstrated that not only chemosorption but also physisorption acts as the sorption mechanism. The reduction in surface area, porosity, and pore volume of the expended adsorbent, along with sorption study results, confirmed that pore filling and intra-particle diffusion played a considerable role in removing heavy metals.

Separation of anthropogenic radionuclides from aqueous environment using raw and modified biosorbents

In this study, two types of biosorbents were used to remove ¹³⁷Cs and plutonium isotopes from aqueous solutions - moss (Ptilium crista - castrensis) and oak sawdust (Quercus robur), both in the form of natural and modified state. Sorbent modification significantly increases the sorbent surface area (for moss sorbents - from 4.0 to 47.2 m²/g, and for sawdust sorbents - from 1.1 to 26.3 m²/g), pore volume (from 10^-3 to 10^-2), concentration and amount of basic cations and anions, as well as active functional groups on the sorbent surface. The main functional groups on the surface of natural sorbents modified with iron hydroxide interacting with analytes are carboxyl and hydroxyl groups. For carbonized sawdust and its subsequent activation with concentrated HCl, in addition to carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, acetyl groups also become active. Carbonated sawdust treated with HCl showed the highest average removal efficiency and sorption capacity for radiocesium and plutonium isotopes in laboratory column experiments - for ¹³⁷Cs ∼78.6% and ∼196.6 Bq/g and for ^239+240Pu ∼83% and ∼41.5 Bq/g, respectively. The moss and moss modified with iron hydroxide also showed good properties of adsorbing plutonium isotopes in field (in-situ) experiments. The best results on the sorption of ¹³⁷Cs in field experiments were shown by carbonated sawdust activated with HCl, and for isotopes of plutonium - the raw moss and moss modified with iron hydroxide. The results of the study showed that sorbents can be used not only for purification of water from plutonium isotopes but allow the operational sampling and more accurate measurement of radiocesium and plutonium isotopes in the fresh water reservoirs by the dynamic flow method.

Mechanistic study for mutual interactions of Pb2+ and Trichoderma viride

Fungi play significant roles in the geochemical processes of heavy metals in the environment. However, the interaction between heavy metals and fungi, especially at the cellular level, is quite complicated and remains unknown. This study explored the mutual interaction mechanism between Pb²⁺ and Trichoderma viride by combining batch experiments, spectroscopy, and in vitro approaches. Batch experiments revealed that Pb²⁺ had toxic effect on T. viride, originally causing the biomass of T. viride decreased from 1.3 g in the control group to 0 g in the presence of 200 mg/L Pb²⁺. The difference in biomass further led to varied pH, even decreasing from 5.7 at the outset to 3.4 due to the acid-production properties of T. viride. Moreover, structural deformation and damage of T. viride mycelium appeared when exposed to Pb²⁺, and were more evident at a higher dose of Pb²⁺ exposure. The growth curve exhibited that T. viride gradually adapted to Pb²⁺ exposure, which related to Pb²⁺ exposure concentration. Further, intracellular and extracellular secretions of T. viride changed with varying exposure concentrations of Pb²⁺, indicating that T. viride adapted differently to different concentrations of Pb²⁺, and MT participated in the detoxification of T. viride. SEM-EDX showed that T. viride could bio-adsorb and bioaccumulate more Pb²⁺ when exposed to more Pb²⁺, which was closely related to the content of P. And carbonyl, phosphate, and amino groups of T. viride participated in the Pb²⁺ biosorption onto T. viride, as evidenced by FT-IR and XPS. Meanwhile, the biomineralization and reduction of Pb²⁺ by T. viride were observed by XRD and XPS, which might be a possible factor for Pb²⁺ biosorption and bioaccumulation. CLSM showed that the bio-adsorbed and bioaccumulated Pb²⁺ were mainly distributed in the membrane of T. viride mycelium.

Development and Characterization of Bioadsorbents Derived from Different Agricultural Wastes for Water Reclamation: A Review

The presence of dangerous pollutants in different water sources has restricted the availability of this natural resource. Thus, the development of new low-cost and environmentally-friendly technologies is currently required to ensure access to clean water. Various approaches to the recovery of contaminated water have been considered, including the generation of biomaterials with adsorption capacity for dangerous compounds. Research on bioadsorbents has boomed in recent years, as they constitute one of the most sustainable options for water treatment thanks to their abundance and high cellulose content. Thanks to the vast amount of information published to date, the present review addresses the current status of different biosorbents and the principal processes and characterization methods involved, focusing on base biomaterials such as fruits and vegetables, grains and seeds, and herbage and forage. In comparison to other reviews, this work reports more than 60 adsorbents obtained from agricultural wastes. The removal efficiencies and/or maximum adsorption capacities for heavy metals, industrial contaminants, nutrients and pharmaceuticals are presented as well. In addition to the valuable information provided in the literature investigation, challenges and perspectives concerning the implementation of bioadsorbents are discussed in order to comprehensively guide selection of the most suitable biomaterials according to the target contaminant and the available biowastes.

Recovery of Au from dilute aqua regia solutions via adsorption on the lyophilized cells of a unicellular red alga Galdieria sulphuraria: A mechanism study

The high electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and low toxicity of elemental Au make it a highly valuable resource. However, wastewater produced during the mining, utilization, and disposal of Au inevitably contains small amounts (10-40 mg L^-1) of Au, thus posing environmental risks. It is too acidic to be treated with inexpensive and eco-friendly bioadsorbents previously studied for the remediation of less acidic effluents. Herein, lyophilized Galdieria sulphuraria cells are shown to directly adsorb Au from simulated Au-containing wastewater with a total acid concentration of 4 M, achieving an adsorption capacity of 35 ± 2.5 mg g^-1 Au after 30-min exposure and a selectivity that exceeds that of an ion-exchange resin and is comparable to that of activated carbon. Additionally, Au adsorbed on these cells is more easily eluted than that adsorbed on the ion-exchange resin or activated carbon. Detailed characterizations reveal that Au accumulates on the surface of lyophilized cells, where it is mainly present as AuCl₄^- and not as Au⁰, in contrast to a previously proposed adsorption mechanism. Thus, our work provides valuable insights into the mechanism of Au adsorption on biomaterials and paves the way to the cheap and eco-friendly recovery of Au from acidic wastewater.

A remediation approach to chromium-contaminated water and soil using engineered biochar derived from peanut shell

Hexavalent chromium (Cr[VI]) is one of the major environmental concerns due to its excessive discharge through effluents from the leather tanning industry. Peanut production leads to the generation of residual shells as waste calling for sustainable disposal. In this study, we employed an innovative approach of applying peanut-shell-derived pristine and engineered biochar for the remediation of Cr-contaminated wastewater and soil. The peanut shell waste was converted to biochar, which was further engineered with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB, a commonly used cationic surfactant). The biochars were then used for the adsorption and immobilization of Cr(VI) in water and soil, respectively. The adsorption experiments demonstrated high Cr(VI) removal efficiency for the engineered biochar (79.35%) compared with the pristine biochar (37.47%). The Langmuir model best described the Cr(VI) adsorption onto the biochars (R² > 0.97), indicating monolayer adsorption. Meanwhile, the adsorption kinetics indicated that chemisorption was the dominant mechanism of interaction between the Cr(VI) and the biochars, as indicated by the best fitting to the pseudo-second-order model (R² > 0.98). Adsorption through the fixed-bed column also presented higher Cr(VI) adsorption onto the engineered biochar (q_eq = 22.93 mg g^-1) than onto the pristine biochar (q_eq = 18.54 mg g^-1). In addition, the desorption rate was higher for the pristine biochar column (13.83 mg g^-1) than the engineered biochar column (10.45 mg g^-1), indicating that Cr(VI) was more strongly adsorbed onto the engineered biochar. A higher immobilization of Cr(VI) was observed in the soil with the engineered biochar than with the pristine biochar, as was confirmed by the significant decreases in the Cr(VI) bioavailability (92%), leachability (100%), and bioaccessibility (97%) compared with the control (soil without biochar). The CTAB-engineered biochar could thus potentially be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal and the immobilization of Cr(VI) in water and soil, respectively.

Chlorella vulgaris meets TiO2 NPs: Effective sorbent/photocatalytic hybrid materials for water treatment application

A new class of bio-nano hybrid catalyst useable in downstream wastewater treatment was developed. We combined the sorption potentialities of Chlorella vulgaris microalgae with the photocatalytic properties of TiO₂ NPs in order to investigate unexplored synergistic effects that could push the algal remediation technology toward a more promising cost-effective balance. We exploited non-living C. vulgaris, which keeps the biosorption properties of the living microalgae, but greatly enhancing the overall processability. C. vulgaris biomass was coupled with TiO₂ NPs and the nanosols were then dried by means of a spray freeze drying (SFD) process able to produce highly reactive granules. A widespread physicochemical characterization supported the preparation and the performance evaluation, so highlighting the key-role of C. vulgaris/TiO₂ interaction at the colloidal state. Heavy metal adsorption, tested for copper ions, and photocatalytic activity, assessed for Rhodamine B (RhB) photodegradation, were evaluated as key performances. The results pointed out a positive synergistic effect for hybrid samples consistent with the enhancement of metal biosorption which ranges from 103 mg g^-1, for pristine C. vulgaris, to about 4000 mg g^-1, when the biomass was coupled with the inorganic nanophase. The photocatalytic activity was well preserved with a complete RhB conversion after 1 h and even advanced in presence of SiO₂NPs into the inorganic counterpart, so increasing the kinetic constant from 8.70 to 10.7 10^-2 min^-1. The results pave the way for the integration of these sorbent/photocatalytic hybrid materials into water remediation systems in an innovative sustainable design perspective.

The Utilization of Algae and Seaweed Biomass for Bioremediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Wastewater

The presence of heavy metals in water bodies is linked to the increasing number of industries and populations. This has serious consequences for the quality of human health and the environment. In accordance with this issue, water and wastewater treatment technologies including ion exchange, chemical extraction, and hydrolysis should be conducted as a first water purification stage. However, the sequestration of these toxic substances tends to be expensive, especially for large scale treatment methods that require tedious control and have limited efficiency. Therefore, adsorption methods using adsorbents derived from biomass represent a promising alternative due to their great efficiency and abundance. Algal and seaweed biomass has appeared as a sustainable solution for environmentally friendly adsorbent production. This review further discusses recent developments in the use of algal and seaweed biomass as potential sorbent for heavy metal bioremediation. In addition, relevant aspects like metal toxicity, adsorption mechanism, and parameters affecting the completion of adsorption process are also highlighted. Overall, the critical conclusion drawn is that algae and seaweed biomass can be used to sustainably eliminate heavy metals from wastewater.

Optimization of nickel and cobalt biosorption by native Serratia marcescens strains isolated from serpentine deposits using response surface methodology

The treatment of metal-polluted wastes is a challenging issue of environmental concern. Metals can be removed using microbial biomass, and this is an interesting approach towards the design of eco-friendly technologies for liquid waste treatment. The study reported here aimed to optimize nickel and cobalt biosorption from aqueous solutions using three native metal-resistant Serratia marcescens strains. Ni(II) and Co(II) biosorption by S. marcescens strains was found to fit better to Langmuir's model, with maximum uptake capacities of 13.5 mg g-1 for Ni(II) ions and 19.9 mg g-1 for Co(II) ions. Different experimental conditions of initial metal concentration, pH, initial biomass, and temperature were optimized using the Plackett-Burman method, and, finally, biomass and metal concentration were studied using the response surface methodology (RSM) to improve biosorption. The optimum uptake capacities for Co(II) ions by the three biosorbents used were obtained for initial metal concentrations of 35-40 mg L-1 and an initial biomass of 6 mg. For Ni(II) ions, the optimum uptake capacity was achieved with 1 mg of initial biomass for S. marcescens C-1 and C-19, and with 7 mg for S. marcescens C-16, with initial concentrations of 20-50 mg L-1. The results obtained demonstrate the viability of native S. marcescens strains as biosorbents for Ni(II) and Co(II) removal. This study also contributes to our understanding of the potential uses of serpentine microbial populations for the design of environmental cleanup technologies.

Biosorption of nickel, cobalt, zinc and copper ions by Serratia marcescens strain 16 in mono and multimetallic systems

The metallurgical industry is one of the main sources of heavy metal pollution, which represents a severe threat to life. Metals can be removed from aqueous solutions by using microbial biomasses. This paper analyses the heavy metal biosorption capacity of Serratia marcescens strain 16 in single and multimetallic systems. The results obtained show that Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) biosorption in monometallic systems is two to three times higher than in the presence of bi-metallic and multimetallic solutions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that carbonyl, carboxyl and hydroxyl were the main functional groups, as well as the amide bands I and II involved in metal uptake, which are present in external structures of the bacterial cell. The results obtained demonstrated the viability of S. marcescens strain 16 as a biosorbent for the design of eco-friendly technologies for the treatment of waste liquor.

Removal of nano-sized polystyrene plastic from aqueous solutions using untreated coffee grounds

Nanoplastic (NP) pollution is an emerging global concern due to its adverse impact on aquatic ecosystems. Nevertheless, the removal of aqueous NPs from aquatic environments remains a significant challenge. This study aims to investigate whether polystyrene NP in aqueous solutions can be removed using coffee grounds. Due to the difficulty associated with directly measuring NP levels and monitoring the biosorption process, we used fluorescent-orange amine-modified polystyrene beads (fluo-NP, 100 nm) to evaluate the efficacy of the biosorption process. The factors including pH, coffee grounds concentration, initial fluo-NP concentration, and contact time were optimized on batch experiments. In addition, the isotherm and kinetic models were employed to clarify the adsorption behaviors and mechanisms. It was found that aqueous fluo-NP particles were effectively adsorbed onto the coffee grounds over a wide pH range (pH 2-12), with a coffee ground concentration of 25 g/L leading to the maximum adsorption efficiency (74%). The equilibrium adsorption capacity of the coffee grounds was 4 mg/g for a reaction time of 40 min. Coffee grounds demonstrated the highest removal efficiency when the initial fluo-NP concentration was 100-125 mg/L. The Dubinin-Radushkevich model and pseudo-second-order model described the adsorption isotherm and kinetics well, respectively, and the adsorption at high fluo-NP concentration range was favorable. Moreover, the results suggest that the mechanism lies in the electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding between surface functional groups of the coffee grounds and the fluo-NP particles. Given that there is an urgent need to remove NPs from aqueous systems, this study illustrates that it is possible to use coffee ground biowaste for this purpose.

Mechanistic insights into soil heavy metals desorption by biodegradable polyelectrolyte under electric field

In this study, we firstly used alginate to enhance an electrokinetic technology to remediate soil contaminated with divalent heavy metals (Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, Zn²⁺). The mechanisms of alginate-associated migration of metal ions in electric field were confirmed. Alginate resulted in a high electrical current during electrokinetic process, and soil conductivity also increased after remediation. Obvious changes in both electroosmotic flow and soil pH were observed. Moreover, these factors were affected by increasing alginate dosage. The highest Cu (95.82%) and Zn (97.33%) removal efficiencies were obtained by introducing 1 wt% alginate. Alginate can desorb Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions from soil by forming unstable gels, which could be dissociated through electrolysis. However, Pb²⁺ ions did not easily migrate out of the contaminated soil. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations show Pb²⁺ ions could form a more stable coordination sphere in metal complexes than Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions. The metal removal efficiency was decreased by increasing alginate dosage at a high level. More alginate could provide more carboxyl ligands for divalent metal ions to stabilize gels, which were difficult to dissociate by electrolysis. In summary, the results indicate it is potential for introducing alginate into an electrokinetic system to remediate Cu- and Zn- contaminated soil.

Response surface approach to optimize the removal of the critical raw material dysprosium from water through living seaweeds

Dysprosium (Dy) is a rare earth element with a high economic and strategic value, and simultaneously an emerging contaminant, whose removal from wastewaters is gaining increasing attention. In this work, the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) combined with a Box-Behnken Design (3 factors-3 levels) was used to optimize the key operational conditions that influence the uptake of Dy by two living seaweed, Ulva sp. and Gracilaria sp.. The initial concentration of Dy (10-500 μg/L), water salinity (10-30), and seaweed dosage (0.5-5.5 g/L) were the independent variables, while the removal efficiency (%) and bioaccumulation (q, μg/g) were the response variables. Results highlighted the high capacity of both species to capture Dy. After 168 h, the optimal conditions that led to a maximum of 91 % of Dy removed by Gracilaria sp. were: 500 μg of Dy per L of water, salinity 10, and 5.5 g of seaweed per L. For Ulva sp., a maximum removal percentage of 79 % was achieved in the conditions: any initial concentration of Dy, salinity 20, and seaweed dosage of 3.7 g/L. Independently of the species, the response surfaces showed that the most important variable for the removal is the seaweed dosage, while for bioaccumulation is the initial concentration of Dy. Using RSM, it was possible to obtain the optimal operating conditions for Dy removal from waters, which is a fundamental step toward the application of the proposed technology at large scale.

Innovative method for encapsulating highly pigmented biomass from Aspergillus nidulans mutant for copper ions removal and recovery

Biosorption has been considered a promising technology for the treatment of industrial effluents containing heavy metals. However, the development of a cost-effective technique for biomass immobilization is essential for successful application of biosorption in industrial processes. In this study, a new method of reversible encapsulation of the highly pigmented biomass from Aspergillus nidulans mutant using semipermeable cellulose membrane was developed and the efficiency of the encapsulated biosorbent in the removal and recovery of copper ions was evaluated. Data analysis showed that the pseudo-second-order model better described copper adsorption by encapsulated biosorbent and a good correlation (r2 > 0.96) to the Langmuir isotherm was obtained. The maximum biosorption capacities for the encapsulated biosorbents were higher (333.5 and 116.1 mg g-1 for EB10 and EB30, respectively) than that for free biomass (92.0 mg g-1). SEM-EDXS and FT-IR analysis revealed that several functional groups on fungal biomass were involved in copper adsorption through ion-exchange mechanism. Sorption/desorption experiments showed that the metal recovery efficiency by encapsulated biosorbent remained constant at approximately 70% during five biosorption/desorption cycles. Therefore, this study demonstrated that the new encapsulation method of the fungal biomass using a semipermeable cellulose membrane is efficient for heavy metal ion removal and recovery from aqueous solutions in multiple adsorption-desorption cycles. In addition, this reversible encapsulation method has great potential for application in the treatment of heavy metal contaminated industrial effluents due to its low cost, the possibility of recovering adsorbed ions and the reuse of biosorbent in consecutive biosorption/desorption cycles with high efficiency of metal removal and recovery.

Kinetics and equilibrium study for the biosorption of lanthanum by Penicillium simplicissimum INCQS 40,211

Lanthanum (La) is a light rare-earth element that plays an essential role in manufacturing technological products, clean technologies, medical products, electron cathodes, scintillators, fluorescent lamps, and fertilizers. This study is the first investigation of La³⁺ biosorption using inactive lyophilized biomass from Penicillium simplicissimum INCQS 40,211. The maximum sorption capacity (q_max) for P. simplicissimum was 7.81 mg g^-1. La ³⁺ biosorption followed the Freundlich model, where the biosorption system possibly multilayer coverage of P. simplicissimum by lanthanum ions. The kinetic data for the adsorption process obeyed a pseudo-second-order (R ² > 0.92), indicating chemical sorption. The results indicated that inactive lyophilized biomass from Penicillium simplicissimum INCQS 40211are an excellent candidate for removing light rare-earth elements from aquatic environments.

The current status, challenges and prospects of using biomass energy in Ethiopia

Despite enormous challenges in accessing sustainable energy supplies and advanced energy technologies, Ethiopia has one of the world's fastest growing economies. The development of renewable energy technology and the building of a green legacy in the country are being prioritized. The total installed capacity for electricity generation in Ethiopia is 4324.3 MW as on October, 2018. Renewable energy accounts for 96.5% of total generation; however, despite the county's enormous biomass energy potential, only 0.58% of power is generated using biomass. Ethiopia has surplus woody biomass, crop residue and animal dung resources which comprise about 141.8 million metric tons of biomass availability per year. At present the exploited potential is about 71.9 million metric tons per year. This review paper provides an in-depth assessment of Ethiopia's biomass energy availability, potential, challenges, and prospects. The findings show that, despite Ethiopia's vast biomass resource potential, the current use of modern energy from biomass is still limited. As a result, this study supports the use of biomass-based alternative energy sources without having a negative impact on the socioeconomic system or jeopardizing food security or the environment. This finding also shows the challenges, opportunities and possible solutions to tackle the problem to expand alternative energy sources. The most effective techniques for producing and utilizing alternate energy sources were also explored. Moreover, some perspectives are given based on the challenges of using efficient energy production and sustainable uses of biomass energy in Ethiopia as it could be also implemented in other developing countries. We believe that the information in this review will shed light on the current and future prospects of biomass energy deployment in Ethiopia.

Natural community of macroalgae from chromium-contaminated site for effective remediation of Cr(VI)-containing leachates

The natural macroalgal community, which developed in the unique and extremely Cr(VI)-polluted aquatic reservoir situated near a historical chromium-waste landfill, was studied in order to recognize the main mechanisms of Cr(VI) detoxification by the algal species. The conducted taxonomic analysis revealed mixed composition of the filamentous forms of algae and showed that three species of Tribonema, namely T. vulgare, T. microchloron and T. viride, which have not been studied before with regard to the mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal, are likely responsible for the effective bioremediation of this highly Cr(VI)-polluted habitat. The studied algal community, with the ability to grow in extremely high concentrations of Cr(VI), i.e. up to ca. 6150 times the upper limit for surface water, exhibited hyperaccumulative properties for chromium (max 16230 mg/kg dry weight) under the given environmental conditions. We found that the main mechanism of Cr(VI) detoxification was reduction followed by Cr(III) biosorption - feasibly by ion exchange and complexation mechanisms - and that the excellent efficiency of chromium reduction under the given, unfavorable weakly alkaline conditions indicates the biological origin of this process. It was concluded that the examined reservoir inhabited by the algal community can be used, after some modifications, as a simple cost-effective "bioreactor" allowing the reduction of chromium concentration to the desired level. Moreover, the conducted studies are also essential to obtain in-depth knowledge and should also be helpful in the relevance of the community for its further application as a potential biosorbent of Cr(VI) on a global scale.

Role of intertidal microbial communities in carbon dioxide sequestration and pollutant removal: A review

Intertidal microbial communities occur as biofilms or microphytobenthos (MPB) which are sediment-attached assemblages of bacteria, protozoa, fungi, algae, diatoms embedded in extracellular polymeric substances. Despite their global occurrence, they have not been reviewed in light of their structural and functional characteristics. This paper reviews the importance of such microbial communities and their importance in carbon dioxide sequestration as well as pollutant bioremediation. Global annual benthic microalgal productivity was 500 million tons of carbon, 50% of which contributed towards the autochthonous carbon fixation in the estuaries. Primary production by MPB was 27-234 gCm^-2y^-1 in the estuaries of Asia, Europe and the United States. Mechanisms of heavy metal removal remain to be tested in intertidal communities. Cyanobacteria facilitate hydrocarbon degradation in intertidal biofilms and microbial mats by supporting the associated sulfate-reducing bacteria and aerobic heterotrophs. Physiological cooperation between the microorganisms in intertidal communities imparts enhanced ability to utilize polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants by these microorganisms than mono-species communities. Future research may be focused on biochemical characteristics of intertidal mats and biofilms, pollutant-microbial interactions and ecosystem influences.

Native Desmodesmus sp. and Chlorella sp. isolated from the Reconquista River display a different binding preference for Cu(II) and Zn(II)

The present work was developed to study the metal removal performance of unicellular algae isolated from the Reconquista River and to evaluate the effect of the presence of more than one metal in the removal process. Thus, native species of unicellular algae were isolated from the highly contaminated Reconquista River. All of the isolates were classified, at genus level, based on their morphological appearance. Nine isolates were screened for their Zn(II) removal capacities. Chlorella sp. RR5 and Desmodesmus sp. RR7 were selected based on their removal performance, and their potential in the remediation of multiple metals was analyzed. Therefore, zinc (Zn(II)), copper (Cu(II)), and chromium (Cr(VI)) removal was evaluated in mono- and multi-metallic solutions. Biosorption capacities were high (0.8-1.8 mmol g^-1) for Zn(II) and Cu(II) in mono-metallic solutions. Removal capacities decreased up to 48% in multi-metallic solutions. Interestingly, when multi-metallic systems were considered, each strain showed a metal preference. Chlorella sp. removed better Cu(II) meanwhile Desmodesmus sp. showed a preference for Zn(II). Thus, a metal-binding selectivity in each strain was determined. Chromium (VI) remediation was almost null in the conditions analyzed in this work. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis showed that polysaccharides were the main functional group involved in metal adsorption and, in some cases, also the carboxylates played an important role. Overall, we were able to analyze a new source of algal diversity and perform a metal removal characterization of them, leading to the identification of a metal selectivity based on the characteristics of the tested algal strains.

High capacity Pb(II) adsorption characteristics onto raw- and chemically activated waste activated sludge

The Pb(II) adsorption characteristics of chemically activated waste activated sewage sludge (WAS) were compared to raw WAS. Adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherm parameters were fit using classic adsorption models. HCl and H₂SO₄ activation terminated any significant sludge-based adsorption. Raw and ZnCl₂ activated WAS displayed Langmuir adsorption capacities of 307 mg/g and 274 mg/g, respectively. Surface characterization revealed that chemical activation with ZnCl₂ increased the BET surface area for raw WAS from 0.97 m²/g to 1.78 m²/g, but did not significantly change the surface structure. FTIR analyzes and XPS were used to further investigate the nature of lead binding. The relationships between equilibrium ion concentration and Pb(II) adsorption suggest cationic exchange with hydrogen, calcium, and zinc as a significant mechanism of Pb(II) removal alongside electrostatic attraction. The pH_PZC was determined as 2.58 and 2.30 for ZnCl₂ activated WAS and raw WAS respectively. HNO₃ and Ca(NO₃)₂ demonstrated sufficient elution properties for WAS recovery. For authentic industrial effluent both raw and ZnCl₂ activated WAS displayed Pb(II) removal behavior comparable to simulated Pb(II) solutions. In comparison with modified and unmodified sludges from literature, this study demonstrates the auspicious potential of raw WAS as an effective Pb(II) adsorbent independent of pyrolytic or chemical activation.
