Investigating the effect of hardness cations on coagulation: The aspect of neutralisation through Al(III)-dissolved organic matter (DOM) binding

Transformation of Al Species on Carbon Surfaces: Effects of Al Species and Carbon Surface Oxygen Groups

Control of residual Al is critical, owing to its high tendency to accumulate in drinking water distribution systems and its potential risks to human health. Herein, the effects of surface properties of activated carbon (AC) on intercepting different Al species (including monomeric Al and polymeric Al species-Al13) are evaluated. The results showed that Al in the form of monomers was considerably adsorbed by AC; whereas Al in the form of polymeric Al13 was held to a much lower degree by AC, and the effluent Al concentration was even higher than that without AC. By comparing virgin AC and hydrogen thermal treated AC, the surface oxygen functional groups on the AC were proposed to play a critical role in the transformation of Al species. The oxygen functional groups on the AC surface can directly form complexes with monomeric Al, thereby inducing the binding of monomeric Al on the AC surface. However, the AC surface oxygen groups could not bind to polymeric Al13, and the interaction between AC surface oxygen groups and polymeric Al13 partially transforms Al13 into monomeric Al species, which inhibited the self-aggregation of Al13. This study aims to provide new insights into the control of residual Al in water treatment plants to ensure drinking water safety.

Characterization of copper binding to different molecular weight fractions of dissolved organic matter in surface water

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a kind of substance with complex compositions and wide molecular weight distribution, which can strongly combine with various pollutants. Therefore, the binding characteristics of DOM and heavy metal pollutants can be studied specifically according to the binding characteristics of DOM and pollutants. In this study, DOM in surface water bodies was divided into three levels (MW < 1 kDa, 1 kDa < MW < 5 kDa, MW > 5 kDa) according to different molecular weights (MW). The binding properties were investigated by fluorescence spectrum analysis and complex model. Four components (C1-C4) were identified by PARAFAC. Among them, the contribution rate of protein-like components C1, C2 and C4 to the total fluorescence intensity reached more than 78%, and the log Ka values of low molecular weight components were the highest, which were 3.28, 3.14 and 3.47, respectively, indicating higher binding ability with Cu2+.With the decrease of molecular weight, the log Kb value increases, indicating that the complexation is more stable. The humic component C3 in high molecular weight has stronger binding stability with Cu2+, but the number of binding sites for C3 is 0.36, while that for C2 is 1.51, indicating that its binding sites and binding ability are relatively low. The results showed that the DOM ligand of Cu2+ in surface water showed a certain molecular weight dependence. In addition, different MW DOM lead to different pollution forms. Different properties of DOM ligand combined with Cu2+ were studied in order to control the migration, transformation, bioavailability, morphology and stability of heavy metal pollutants, and to provide theoretical support for the practical application management of surface water pollution control.

Suppression of performance of activated carbon filter due to residual aluminum accumulation

Extending the lifetime of granular activated carbon (GAC) filters with no significant loss in their effectiveness is a considerable challenge for drinking water supply utilities. However, the effects of residual Al from coagulants on GAC performance are rarely considered. Herein, in-service GAC samples obtained from full-scale water treatment plants were investigated to evaluate the amount of accumulated Al. Although the Al concentration in water was two to three times lower than the Ca concentration, Al exhibited considerable accumulation (second to Ca accumulation) in in-service GAC samples (0.68-8.63 mg g^-1). Surface characterization results indicated that Al accumulation could have been caused by the co-precipitation of Al with Ca and Si to form Ca₄Al₂Si₃O₁₀·H₂O and Ca₄Al₆O₁₂SO₄, self-precipitation or complexion with -OH/-COOH on the GAC or biofilm surfaces. Correlation analysis of the accumulated Al and GAC properties implied that Al accumulation considerably reduced the surface area of GAC by ∼30%. Lab simulation experiments indicated that the removal of dissolved organic matter was reduced by 6-10% when additional Al was loaded. In addition, results showed that the residual Al (up to 200 μg L^-1) considerably affected the extracellular polymeric substance component and microorganism community structure. In summary, strict control of residual Al is beneficial for maintaining the efficacies of GAC and biologically activated carbon.

Enhanced coagulation for mitigation of disinfection by-product precursors: A review

The unintended formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) has received considerable attention as it may pose risks to human health. Coagulation is the most common process for removing particulates as well as dissolved organic matter (DOM) (i.e., DBP precursors) during drinking water and wastewater treatments. With the improvement of water quality standards and the increased fluctuation in source water quality, conventional coagulation becomes challenging. Thus, significant efforts have been made to enhance coagulation to promote the removal of DOM in source water and mitigate the formation of DBPs in drinking water. This review provides a brief summary of the properties of DBP precursors and summarizes the effectiveness of enhanced coagulation involving three types of coagulants (metal-based coagulants, organic polymers, and organic-inorganic hybrid coagulants) in controlling the formation of DBPs during chlor(am)ination disinfection. Metal-based coagulants can achieve a reduction in DBP formation potential of approximately 20%-60% in natural water under enhanced coagulation conditions. Both the organic polymers (used as coagulant aids) and novel hybrid coagulants increase the removal of DOM and exhibit high potential for mitigating DBP formation. In addition, integrated treatments combining coagulation with other treatment processes (e.g., oxidation, membrane filtration, ion exchange, and adsorption) to enhance DBP precursor removal are evaluated in terms of performance, mechanisms, and features. Advanced treatments, such as membrane filtration and activated carbon adsorption, are effective coagulation-assisted processes, and can further control chlorinated DBPs; however, the elevated formation of bromate or highly brominated DBPs is of particular concern.

Effects of pre-oxidation on residual dissolved aluminum in coagulated water: A pilot-scale study

Residual dissolved aluminum (Al) in drinking water is becoming a serious concern due to its high potential risks to human health. However, the mechanism by which residual dissolved Al forms is yet to be elucidated in detail. In this study, the effects of pre-oxidation by ozonation and chlorination on the properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and residual Al concentrations remaining in solution after coagulation were explored in a pilot-scale test. Changes in the DOM properties caused by the water treatment process were characterized by ultraviolet-visible absorbance spectroscopy. Theprotonation-active sites, carboxylic- and phenolic-type groupsof DOM were quantified by spectral parameter DlnA400 (differential log-transformed spectra at wavelength 400 nm) in combination with the revised non-ideal competitive adsorption model. The results show that ozonation and chlorination significantly affect the properties of DOM and the amount of residual dissolved Al in coagulated drinking water. This effect was associated with the changes in the carboxylic- and phenolic-type groups in DOM. Results of the study show that residual dissolved Al in coagulated water can be controlled by affecting theAl binding sites in DOM by pre-oxidation before coagulation. The nature of pre-oxidation agent and its dosage should be selected depending on the quality of the raw water to be treated. Ozonation was concluded to be preferable pre-oxidation agent for the water in examined this study.

In-situ characterization of dissolved organic matter removal by coagulation using differential UV-Visible absorbance spectroscopy

Removing dissolved organic matter (DOM) is of great concern due to its adverse effects on water supplies. Great effort has been given to studying DOM removal by coagulation, while the mechanism of DOM removal and the changes in its properties during coagulation have not been clearly illustrated due to the limitations of detection methods under practical environmental conditions. In this paper, the changes in DOM during coagulation were quantified using differential UV-Visible absorbance spectroscopy, and the differential spectra of DOM in the wavelength range of 200-600 nm could be deconvoluted into six Gaussian bands with maxima at approximately 200, 240, 276, 316, 385, and 457 nm after coagulation, respectively. The intensity of these maxima decreased with the type and dosage of coagulants. These observations should reflect the difference in the removability of DOM by coagulation, and this perspective was further confirmed by examining the deprotonation-protonation properties of DOM before and after coagulation. The affinity sites of DOM in coagulated waters, quantified by spectra parameter DlnA₄₀₀ (differential log-transformed spectra at wavelength 400 nm) in combination with the revised NICA model, increased as the coagulant dosage, which indicates that coagulation is inclined to remove the DOM fraction with fewer functional groups. Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and Al-aggregate (Al₁₃) were more efficient than Alum for removing DOM due to their high efficiency for removing DOM fractions with fewer functional groups. The residual dissolved Al concentration depended on the total amount of reactive binding sites in DOM, and there was a strong linear correlation between residual dissolved Al and the total amount of reactive binding sites in DOM for Alum, while a weaker correlation was presented for PAC and Al₁₃. This indicates that Al_a was the dominant species to bind with the affinity sites in DOM to form residual dissolved Al.

Natural organic matter-cations complexation and its impact on water treatment: A critical review

The quality and quantity of natural organic matter (NOM) has been observed to evolve which poses challenges to water treatment facilities. Even though NOM may not be toxic itself, its presence in water has aesthetic effects, enhances biological growth in distribution networks, binds with pollutants and controls the bioavailability of trace metals. Even though NOM has heterogeneous functional groups, the predominant ones are the carboxyl and the phenolic groups, which have high affinities for metals depending on the pH. The properties of both the NOM and the trace elements influence the binding kinetics and preferences. Ca²⁺ prefers to bind with the carboxylic groups especially at a low pH while Zn²⁺ prefers the amine groups though practically, most cations bind to several functions groups. The nature of the chemical environment (neighboring ligands) the ligand finds itself equally influences its preference for a cation. The presence of NOM, cations or a complex of NOM-cations may have significant impact on the efficiency of water processes such as coagulation, adsorption, ion exchange resin and membrane filtration. In coagulation, the complexation between the coagulant salts and NOM helps to remove NOM from solution. This positive influence can further be enhanced by the addition of Ca²⁺. A negative influence is however, observed in lime-softening method as NOM complexes with Ca²⁺. A negative influence is also seen in membrane filtration where divalent cations partially neutralize the carboxyl functional groups of NOM thereby reducing the repulsion effect on NOM and increasing membrane fouling. The formation of disinfection by-products could either be increased or reduced during chlorination, the speciation of products formed is modified with generally the enhancement of haloacetic acid formation observed in presence of metal cations. This current work, presents in details the interactions of cations and NOM in the environment, the preference of cations for each functional group and the possible competition between cations for binding sites, as well as the possible impacts of the presence of cations, NOM, or their complex on water treatment processes.

Effects of ion species on the disinfection byproduct formation in artificial and real water

Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) have attracted extensive attention due to their cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. This study investigates the effects of different ions on DBP formation during chlorination and chloramination in artificial and real water samples. Compared with chlorination, chloramination can reduce the formation of DBPs. K⁺ only reduce the formation of DBPs during chloramination. Ca²⁺ forms less DBPs than Mg²⁺ does during chlorination and chloramination due to the stronger binding effect. Al³⁺ and their hydroxide colloids have a significant effect on DBP formation. Anions have no significant effect on DBP formation. Due to the difference between the real and artificial water samples, the large amount of NH₄⁺ in the real water will form chloramine during chlorination. Furthermore, the effects of different ion in the chlorination will have the same tendency during chlorination. In the wastewater with high ionic strength, the effects of salts are mostly ignored. Studying the effects of different ions on DBP formation is important in controlling the content of DBPs in the disinfection process.

Investigating the features in differential absorbance spectra of NOM associated with metal ion binding: A comparison of experimental data and TD-DFT calculations for model compounds

In this study, seven model compounds containing typical functional groups (phenolic and carboxylic groups) present in nature organic matter (NOM) were used to ascertain the nature of the characteristic bands in differential absorbance spectra (DAS) of NOM that are induced by metal ion binding. Some similarities were found between the DAS of the examined model compounds, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, sinapic acid, terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, esculetin and myricetin and those of NOM. The binding of Cu(II) with carboxylic group might produce two peaks, A1 and A2, while the binding of Cu(II) with phenolic group might produce all four Gaussian peaks, from A1 to A4 displayed in the DAS of NOM. The UV-visible spectra predicted using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT)-based methods met well with the experimental DAS of model compounds at different stages of Cu(II) binding. It demonstrates that the features in absorbance spectra are chiefly caused by HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital) - LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital) transitions in the molecule and that the appearance of peaks in DAS reflects the changes of the molecular orbitals around reactive functional groups in a molecule before and after metal ion binding. The basis of the DAS features of NOM that are induced by metal ion binding could be identified primarily by the frontier molecular orbital theory.
