Complex impact of metals on the fate of disinfection by-products in drinking water pipelines: A systematic review

Metals in the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) play an important role on the fate of disinfection by-products (DBPs). They can increase the formation of DBPs through several mechanisms, such as enhancing the proportion of reactive halogen species (RHS), catalysing the reaction between natural organic matter (NOM) and RHS through complexation, or by increasing the conversion of NOM into DBP precursors. This review comprehensively summarizes these complex processes, focusing on the most important metals (copper, iron, manganese) in DWDS and their impact on various DBPs. It organizes the dispersed 'metals-DBPs' experimental results into an easily accessible content structure and presents their underlying common or unique mechanisms. Furthermore, the practically valuable application directions of these research findings were analysed, including the toxicity changes of DBPs in DWDS under the influence of metals and the potential enhancement of generalization in DBP model research by the introduction of metals. Overall, this review revealed that the metal environment within DWDS is a crucial factor influencing DBP levels in tap water.

Occurrence of iodinated contrast media (ICM) in water environments and their control strategies with a particular focus on iodinated by-products formation: A comprehensive review

Iodinated contrast media (ICM), one of the pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are frequently detected in various water bodies due to the strong biochemical stability and recalcitrance to conventional water treatment. Additionally, ICM pose a risk of forming iodinated by-products that can be detrimental to the aquatic ecosystem. Consequently, effectively removing ICM from aqueous environments is a significant concern for environmental researchers. This article provides a comprehensive review of the structural characteristics of ICM, their primary source (e.g., domestic and hospital wastewater), detected concentrations in water environments, and ecological health hazards associated with them. The current wastewater treatment technologies for ICM control are also reviewed in detail with the aim of providing a reference for future research. Prior researches have demonstrated that traditional treatment processes (such as physical adsorption, biochemical method and chemical oxidation method) have inadequate efficiencies in the removal of ICM. Currently, the application of advanced oxidation processes to remove ICM has become extensive, but there are some issues like poor deiodination efficiency and the risk of forming toxic intermediates or iodinated by-products. Conversely, reduction technologies have a high deiodination rate, enabling the targeted removal of ICM. But the subsequent treatment issues related to iodine (such as I- and OI-) are often underestimated, potentially generating iodinated by-products during the subsequent treatment processes. Hence, we proposed using combined reduction-oxidation technologies to remove ICM and achieved synchronous control of iodinated by-products. In the future, it is recommended to study the degradation efficiency of ICM and the control efficiency of iodinated by-products by combining different reduction and oxidation processes.

High efficiency removal of organic and inorganic iodine with ferrate[Fe(VI)] through oxidation and adsorption

I- is a halogen species existing in natural waters, and the transformation of organic and inorganic iodine in natural and artificial processes would impact the quality of drinking water. Herein, it was found that Fe(VI) could oxidize organic and inorganic iodine to IO3-and simultaneously remove the resulted IO3- through Fe(III) particles. For the river water, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluent, and shale gas wastewater treated by 5 mg/L of Fe(VI) (as Fe), around 63 %, 55 % and 71 % of total iodine (total-I) had been removed within 10 min, respectively. Fe(VI) was superior to coagulants in removing organic and inorganic iodine from the source water. Adsorption kinetic analysis suggested that the equilibrium adsorption amount of I- and IO3- were 11 and 10.1 μg/mg, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity of IO3- by Fe(VI) resulted Fe(III) particles was as high as 514.7 μg/mg. The heterogeneous transformation of Fe(VI) into Fe(III) effectively improved the interaction probability of IO3- with iron species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation suggested that the IO3- was mainly adsorbed in the cavity (between the γ-FeOOH shell and γ-Fe2O3 core) of Fe(III) particles through electrostatic adsorption, van der Waals force and hydrogen bond. Fe(VI) treatment is effective for inhibiting the formation of iodinated disinfection by-products in chlor(am)inated source water.

Iodine revisited: If and how inorganic iodine species can be measured reliably and what cause their conversions in water?

This study revisited a list of inorganic iodine species on their detections and conversions under different water conditions. Several surprising results were found, e.g., UV-vis spectrophotometry is the only reliable method for I3- and I2 determinations with coexisting I-/IO3-/IO4-, while alkaline eluent of IC and LC columns can convert them into I- completely; IO4- can be converted into IO3- completely in IC columns and partly in LC columns; a small portion of IO3- was reduced to I- in LC columns. To avoid errors, a method for detecting multiple coexisting iodine species is suggested as follows: firstly, detecting I3- and I2 via UV-vis spectrophotometry; then, analyzing IO4- (> 0.2 mg/L) through LC; and lastly, obtaining I- and IO3- concentrations by deducting I- and IO3- measured by IC from the signals derived from I3-/I2/IO4-. As for stability, I- or IO3- alone is stable, but mixing them up generates I2 or H2OI+ under acidic conditions. Although IO4- is stable within pH 4.0-8.0, it becomes H5IO6/H3IO62- in strongly acidic/alkaline solutions. Increasing pH accelerates the conversions of I3- and I2 into I- under basic conditions, whereas dissolved oxygen and dosage exert little effect. Additionally, spiking ICl into water produces I2 and IO3- rather than HIO.

Zerovalent Iron/Cu Combined Degradation of Halogenated Disinfection Byproducts and Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship Modeling

Previous studies have reported that zerovalent iron (ZVI) can reduce several aliphatic groups of disinfection byproducts (DBPs) (e.g., haloacetic acids and haloacetamides) effectively, and the removal efficiency can be significantly improved by metallic copper. Information regarding ZVI/Cu combined degradation of different types of halogenated DBPs can help understand the fate of overall DBPs in drinking water distribution and storage systems consisting of unlined cast iron/copper pipes and related potential control strategies. In this study, we found that, besides aliphatic DBPs, many groups of new emerging aromatic DBPs formed in chlorinated and chloraminated drinking water can be effectively degraded by ZVI/Cu; meanwhile, total organic halogen and total ion intensity were reduced significantly after treatment. Moreover, a robust quantitative structure-activity relationship model was developed and validated based on the ZVI/Cu combined degradation rate constants of 14 typical aromatic DBPs; it can predict the degradation rate constants of other aromatic DBPs for screening and comparative purposes, and the optimized descriptors indicate that DBPs possessing a lower value of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy and a higher value of dipole moment tend to present higher degradation rate constants. In addition, toxicity data of 47 DBPs (belonging to 18 groups) were predicted by two previously established toxicity models, demonstrating that, although most DBPs exhibit higher toxicity than their dehalogenated products, some DBPs show lower toxicity than their lowly halogenated analogs.

Sequential combination of pre-chlorination and powdered activated carbon adsorption on iodine removal and I-THMs control in drinking water

Combining pre-oxidation with activated carbon adsorption was explored as an ideal approach for removing iodine from water source to eliminate the formation of Iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs). Compared with permanganate and monochloramine, chlorine is more suitable as pre-oxidant to obtain higher active iodine species (HOI/I₂). Active iodine species adsorption using both powdered activated carbon (PAC) and granular activated carbon (GAC) can be well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicating that chemical adsorption was the dominant mechanism for HOI/I₂ adsorption. The average pore size of activated carbons was the most strongly correlated with the adsorption capacity (R² > 0.98), followed by methylene blue (R² > 0.76), pore volume (R² > 0.70) and iodine number (R² > 0.67). Moreover, three models, including intraparticle diffusion, Byod kinetic, and diffusion-chemisorption were used to illustrate the mechanisms of HOI/I₂ adsorption. Chemical adsorption was the dominant mechanism for HOI/I₂ adsorption. In summary, at the molar ratio of [NaClO] and [I^-] as 1.2, pre-chloriantion time of 5 min, subsequently dosage of 15 mg/L of PAC E with 20 min adsorption can remove 79.8% iodine. In addition, the combined process can eliminate 61%-87.2% of I-THMs in the subsequent chlor(am)ination. The results indicate that pre-chlorination combined with PAC can effectively removed HOI/I₂ and attenuate I-THMs formation in the subsequent disinfection process.

Enhanced coagulation and oxidation by the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate process: Performance and mechanisms

To improve the performance of the conventional coagulation process, a permanganate (Mn(VII)) pre-oxidation combined with Fe(III)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) coagulation process (Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS) that can significantly improve the removal of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), turbidity, and micropollutants is proposed in this study. Compared with conventional Fe(III) coagulation, the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process can also significantly enhance the removal of iohexol and sulfamethoxazole in raw water. During this process, the primary reduction product, Mn(IV), after Mn(VII) pre-oxidation was adsorbed on the floc surfaces and involved in the Fe(III)/PMS process. The natural organic matter (NOM) in raw water mediated the redox cycle of iron. The synergistic effect of NOM, Fe, and Mn facilitated the redox cycle of Mn(III)/Mn(IV) and Fe(III)/Fe(II) to promote the activation of PMS. The sulfate radical (SO₄^•-) played an important role in the degradation of micropollutants. The formation potential of the detected volatile disinfection by-product (DBP) during the subsequent chlorination was reduced by 21.9% after the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process. This study demonstrated the promising application of the Mn(VII)-Fe(III)/PMS process for coagulation and micropollutant control and illustrated the reaction mechanism. This study provides guidance for improving conventional drinking water treatment processes.

Insight into the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes during chlorination, monochloramination, and dichloramination of iodide-containing water

In this study, the formation of iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) was systematically evaluated and compared for three treatment processes - (i) chlorination, (ii) monochloramine, and (iii) dichloramination - under different pH conditions. The results demonstrated that I-THM formation decreased in the order of monochloramination > dichloramination > chlorination in acidic and neutral pH. However, the generation of I-THMs increased in the dichloramination < chlorination < monochloramination order in alkaline condition. Specifically, the formation of I-THMs increased as pH increased from 5 to 9 during chlorination and monochloramination processes, while the maximum I-THM formation occurred at pH 7 during dichloramination. The discrepancy could be mainly related to the stability of the three chlor (am) ine disinfectants at different pH conditions. Moreover, in order to gain a thorough insight into the mechanisms of I-THM formation during dichloramination, further investigation was conducted on the influencing factors of DOC concentration and Br^-/I^- molar ratio. I-THM formation exhibited an increasing and then decreasing trend as the concentration of DOC increased from 1 to 7 mg-C/L, while the yield of I-THMs increased with increasing Br^-/I^- molar ratio from 5:0 to 5:10. During the three processes mentioned above, similar I-THM formation results were also obtained in real water, which indicates that the excessive generation of I-THMs should be paid special attention during the disinfection of iodide-containing water.

Preferential Halogenation of Algal Organic Matter by Iodine over Chlorine and Bromine: Formation of Disinfection Byproducts and Correlation with Toxicity of Disinfected Waters

The increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in surface waters may increase the input of algal organic matter (AOM) in drinking water. The formation of halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during combined chlorination and chloramination of AOM and natural organic matter (NOM) in the presence of bromide and iodide and haloform formation during halogenation of model compounds were studied. Results indicated that haloform/halogen consumption ratios of halogens reacting with amino acids (representing proteins present in AOM) follow the order iodine > bromine > chlorine, with ratios for iodine generally 1-2 orders of magnitude greater than those for chlorine (0.19-2.83 vs 0.01-0.16%). This indicates that iodine is a better halogenating agent than chlorine and bromine. In contrast, chlorine or bromine shows higher ratios for phenols (representing the phenolic structure of humic substances present in NOM). Consistent with these observations, chloramination of AOM extracted from Microcystis aeruginosa in the presence of iodide produced 3 times greater iodinated trihalomethanes than those from Suwannee River NOM isolate. Cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of disinfected algal-impacted waters evaluated by Chinese hamster ovary cell bioassays both follow the order chloramination > prechlorination-chloramination > chlorination. This trend is in contrast to additive toxicity calculations based on the concentrations of measured DBPs since some toxic iodinated DBPs were not identified and quantified, suggesting the necessity of experimentally analyzing the toxicity of disinfected waters. During seasonal HAB events, disinfection practices warrant optimization for iodide-enriched waters to reduce the toxicity of finished waters.

The fate and transformation of iodine species in UV irradiation and UV-based advanced oxidation processes

Iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) formed in water treatment are of emerging concern due to their high toxicity and the tase-and-odor problems associated with iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs). Iodoacetic acid and dichloroiodomethane are currently regulated in Shenzhen, China and the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China has also been considering regulating I-DBPs. Iodide (I^-), organoiodine compounds (e.g., iodinated X-ray contrast media [ICM]), and iodate (IO₃^-) are the three common iodine sources in aquatic environment that lead to I-DBP formation. While UV irradiation effectively inactivate a wide range of microorganisms in water, it induces the transformation of these iodine sources, enabling the formation of I-DBPs. This review focuses on the fate and transformation of these iodine sources in UV-based water treatment (i.e., UV irradiation and UV-based advanced oxidation processes [UV-AOPs]) and the formation of I-DBPs in post-disinfection. I^- released in UV-based treatments of ICM and can be oxidized in subsequent disinfection to hypoiodous acid (HOI), which reacts with natural organic matter (NOM) to produce I-DBPs. Both UV and UV-AOPs are not able to fully mineralize ICM and completely oxidize the released I^- to (except UV/O₃). Results reveal that UV and UV-AOPs are adequate for I-DBP degradation but require high UV doses. While the ideal I-DBP mitigation strategy awaits to be developed, understanding their sources and formation pathways aids in informed selections of water treatment processes, empowers water suppliers to meet drinking water standards, and minimizes consumers' exposure to I-DBPs.

Comprehensive review on iodinated X-ray contrast media: Complete fate, occurrence, and formation of disinfection byproducts

Iodinated contrast media (ICM) are drugs which are used in medical examinations for organ imaging purposes. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have shown incapability to remove ICM, and as a consequence, ICM and their transformation products (TPs) have been detected in environmental waters. ICM show limited biotransformation and low sorption potential. ICM can act as iodine source and can react with commonly used disinfectants such as chlorine in presence of organic matter to yield iodinated disinfection byproducts (IDBPs) which are more cytotoxic and genotoxic than conventionally known disinfection byproducts (DBPs). Even highly efficient advanced treatment systems have failed to completely mineralize ICM, and TPs that are more toxic than parent ICM are produced. This raises issues regarding the efficacy of existing treatment technologies and serious concern over disinfection of ICM containing waters. Realizing this, the current review aims to capture the attention of scientific community on areas of less focus. The review features in depth knowledge regarding complete environmental fate of ICM along with their existing treatment options.

Reduction of bromate by zero valent iron (ZVI) enhances formation of brominated disinfection by-products during chlorination

Bromate (BrO₃^-) is a predominant undesired toxic disinfection by-product (DBP) during ozonation of bromide-containing waters. The reduction of BrO₃^- by zero valent iron (ZVI) and its effect on formation of organic halogenated DBPs during chlorination were investigated in this study. The presence of ZVI could reduce BrO₃^- to bromide (Br^-), and Br^- formed could be transformed to free bromine (HOBr/OBr^-) during chlorination, further leading to organic brominated (Br-) DBPs formation. Formation of DBPs during chlorination, including trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetonitriles (HANs) was detected under different conditions. The results showed that when ZVI dosage increased from 0 to 1 g L^-1, the formation of Br-DBPs (e.g., TBM and DBCM) was significantly improved, while the formation of Cl-DBPs (e.g., TCM, TCAN and DCAN) reduced. Higher ZVI dosage exhibited inhibitory effect on Br-DBPs formation due to the competition between ZVI and free chlorine (HOCl/OCl^-). The bromine substitution factor (BSF) of THMs significantly decreased from 0.61 ± 0.06 to 0.22 ± 0.02, as the pH was raised from 5.0 to 9.0. Besides, the increase of initial BrO₃^- concentration significantly improved the formation of Br-DBPs and decreased the formation of Cl-DBPs, leading to an obvious rise on the BSF of THMs. As the initial concentration of HOCl increased, all THMs and HANs gradually increased. Moreover, the analysis based on the cytotoxicity index (CTI) of the determined DBPs showed that reduction of BrO₃^- by ZVI during chlorination had certain risks in real water sources, which should be paid attention to in the application.

A multivariate Bayesian network analysis of water quality factors influencing trihalomethanes formation in drinking water distribution systems

Controlling disinfection by-products formation while ensuring effective drinking water disinfection is important for protecting public health. However, understanding and predicting disinfection by-product formation under a variety of conditions in drinking water distribution systems remains challenging as disinfection by-product formation is a multifactorial phenomenon. This study aimed to assess the application of Bayesian Network models to predict the concentration of trihalomethanes, the dominant halogenated disinfection by-product class, using various water quality parameters. Naïve Bayesian and semi-naïve Bayesian models were constructed from Sydney and South East Queensland datasets across 15 drinking water distribution systems in Australia. The targeted variable, total trihalomethanes concentration, was discretised into 3 bins (<0.1 mg L^-1, 0.1 - 0.2 mg L^-1 and >0.2 mg L^-1). The Bayesian network structures were built using water quality parameters including concentrations of individual and total trihalomethanes, disinfectant species (free chlorine, monochloramine, dichloramine, total chlorine), nitrogen species (free ammonia, total ammonia, nitrate, nitrite), and other physical/chemical parameters (temperature, pH, dissolved organic carbon, total dissolved solids, conductivity and turbidity). Seven performance parameters, including predictive accuracy and the rates of true and false positive and negative results, were used to assess the accuracy and precision of the Bayesian network models. After evaluating the model performance, the optimum models were selected to be Bayesian network augmented naïve models. These were observed to have the highest predictive accuracies for Sydney (78%) and South East Queensland (94%). Although disinfectant residuals are among the key variables that lead to trihalomethanes formation, potential concentrations of trihalomethanes in distribution systems can be more confidently predicted, in terms of probability associated with a wider range of water quality variables, using Bayesian networks. The modelling procedure developed in this work can now be applied to develop system-specific Bayesian network models for trihalomethanes prediction in other drinking water distribution systems.

A comparison of dissolved organic matter transformation in low pressure ultraviolet (LPUV) and ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED)/chlorine processes

This study compared the degradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM) by UV/chlorine advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) with emerging ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED, 275 nm) and traditional low pressure UV (LPUV, 254 nm) as UV sources. Excitation emission matrix-parallel factor (EEM-PARAFAC) analysis and two-dimensional (2D) correlation gel permeation chromatograph were applied to explore the evolutions of DOM during oxidation processes. The degradation behaviors of DOM indicated by UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV₂₅₄), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and fluorophores fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetics well. The removal efficiency of DOM was similar under UV-LED and LPUV irradiation alone. However, UV-LED exhibited much higher degradation rates (increased by 29-160%) than LPUV regardless of the tracking variables during UV/chlorine processes. For three PARAFAC components, humic-like fluorescences were preferentially degraded by UV/chlorine oxidation compared with protein-like fluorescence potentially due to the differences of electronic moieties and molecular weight (MW). The decline in UV₂₅₄, DOC, and fluorophores increased with increasing chlorine dosage; linear correlations between those indicators were observed during the two AOPs. Moreover, UV-LED/chlorine could achieve greater extents of MW change. Our study demonstrated that UV-LED could be a superior alternative for the future selection of UV source in the UV/chlorine process.

Coagulation of Iodide-Containing Resorcinol Solution or Natural Waters with Ferric Chloride Can Produce Iodinated Coagulation Byproducts

Iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) are of particular concern in drinking water due to the more cytotoxic and genotoxic properties than their chlorinated and brominated analogs. Formation of I-DBP primarily results from the oxidation of iodide-containing waters with various oxidants and the chlor(am)ination of iodinated organic compounds in drinking water. This study first reports that ferric chloride (FeCl₃) can lead to the formation of iodinated coagulation byproducts (I-CBPs) from iodide-containing resorcinol solution or natural waters. The unwanted I-CBP formation involved the oxidation of iodide by ferric ions to generate various reactive iodine species, which further oxidize organic compounds. Although the oxidation rate of iodide by FeCl₃ was several orders of magnitude slower than that by chlorine or chloramine, most of the converted iodide under the ferric/iodide system was transformed into iodine and iodinated organic compounds rather than iodate. Formation of four aliphatic I-CBPs was observed, and four aromatic I-CBPs were identified by gas chromatography mass-spectrometry and theoretical calculation. Coagulation of iodide-containing waters with FeCl₃ also produced I-CBPs ranging from 12.5 ± 0.8 to 32.5 ± 0.2 μg/L as I. These findings call for careful consideration of the formation of I-CBPs from coagulation of iodide-containing waters with ferric salts.

Iodination of Dimethenamid in Chloraminated Water: Active Iodinating Agents and Distinctions between Chlorination, Bromination, and Iodination

Few studies have elucidated the agent(s) that generate iodinated disinfection byproducts during drinking water treatment. We present a kinetic investigation of iodination of dimethenamid (DM), a model compound lacking acid-base speciation. Water chemistry parameters (pH, [Cl^-], [Br^-], [I^-], and [pH buffer]) were systematically varied. As pH increased (4-9), DM iodination rate decreased. Conventional wisdom considers hypoiodous acid (HOI) as the predominant iodinating agent; nevertheless, HOI (pK_HOI = 10.4) could not have produced this result, as its concentration is essentially invariant from pH 4-9. In contrast, [H₂OI⁺] and [ICl] both decrease as pH increases. To distinguish their contributions to DM iodination, [Cl^-] was added at constant pH and ionic strength. Although chloride addition did increase the iodination rate, the reaction order in [Cl^-] was fractional (≤0.36). The contribution of ICl to DM iodination remained below 47% under typical drinking water conditions ([Cl^-] ≤ 250 mg/L), implicating H₂OI⁺ as the predominant iodinating agent. Distinctions between DM iodination versus chlorination or bromination include a more pronounced role for the hypohalous acidium ion (H₂OX⁺), negligible contributions by hypohalous acid and molecular halogen (X₂), and a more muted influence of XCl, leading to lesser susceptibility to catalysis by chloride.

Disinfection byproduct formation during drinking water treatment and distribution: A review of unintended effects of engineering agents and materials

Unintended effects of engineering agents and materials on the formation of undesirable disinfection byproducts (DBPs) during drinking water treatment and distribution were comprehensively reviewed. Specially, coagulants, biologically active filtration biofilms, activated carbons, nanomaterials, ion-exchange resins, membrane materials in drinking water treatment and piping materials, deposits and biofilms within drinking water distribution systems were discussed, which may serve as DBP precursors, transform DBPs into more toxic species, and/or catalyze the formation of DBPs. Speciation and quantity of DBPs generated rely heavily on the material characteristics, solution chemistry conditions, and operating factors. For example, quaternary ammonium polymer coagulants can increase concentrations of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) to above the California notification level (10 ng/L). Meanwhile, the application of strong base ion-exchange resins has been associated with the formation of N-nitrosamines and trichloronitromethane up to concentrations of 400 ng/L and 9.0 μg/L, respectively. Organic compounds leaching from membranes and plastic and rubber pipes can generate high NDMA (180-450 ng/L) and chloral hydrate (∼12.4 μg/L) upon downstream disinfection. Activated carbon and membranes preferentially remove organic precursors over bromide, resulting in a higher proportion of brominated DBPs. Copper corrosion products (CCPs) accelerate the decay of disinfectants and increase the formation of halogenated DBPs. Chlorination of high bromide waters containing CCPs can form bromate at concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Owing to the aforementioned concern for the drinking water quality, the application of these materials and reagents during drinking water treatment and distribution should be based on the removal of pollutants with consideration for balancing DBP formation during disinfection scenarios. Overall, this review highlights situations in which the use of engineering agents and materials in drinking water treatment and distribution needs balance against deleterious impacts on DBP formation.

Effect of UV wavelength on humic acid degradation and disinfection by-product formation during the UV/chlorine process

The efficiency of the ultraviolet (UV)/chlorine process strongly depends on UV wavelength because chlorine photolysis and its subsequent radical formation are highly wavelength-dependent. This study compared the degradation of humic acid (HA) during the UV/chlorine process by low pressure mercury lamp (LPUV, 254 nm) and ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED, 275 and 310 nm). The results indicated that HA degradation followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the fluence-based degradation rate constants (k_obs) were significantly affected by UV wavelength and solution pH. HA degradation decreased greatly with increasing solution pH during the UV/chlorine process at 254 nm, while the opposite trend was observed at 275 and 310 nm. In the meantime, k_obs decreased in the order of 275 nm > 254 nm > 310 nm at pH > 7.0. The changes of chlorine molar absorption coefficients at different UV wavelengths resulted in the variation of chlorine photodecay rates (k_{obs, chlorine}), and the synergistic effects of k_{obs, chlorine} and chlorine quantum yields (Φ_chlorine) affected HA reduction. The formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) during the UV/chlorine process was also evaluated. A significant suppression on DBP formation and DBP-associated calculated theoretical cytotoxicity were observed at 275 nm high UV fluence and alkaline pHs. These findings in this study demonstrate that UV wavelength at 275 nm is more suitable for HA degradation by the UV/chlorine advanced oxidation process in practical applications.

Formation of Iodinated Disinfection Byproducts (I-DBPs) in Drinking Water: Emerging Concerns and Current Issues

Formation of iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) in drinking water has become an emerging concern. Compared to chlorine- and bromine-containing DBPs, I-DBPs are more toxic, have different precursors and formation mechanisms, and are unregulated. In this Account, we focus on recent research in the formation of known and unknown I-DBPs in drinking water. We present the state-of-the-art understanding of known I-DBPs for the six groups reported to date, including iodinated methanes, acids, acetamides, acetonitriles, acetaldehyde, and phenols. I-DBP concentrations in drinking water generally range from ng L^-1 to low-μg L^-1. The toxicological effects of I-DBPs are summarized and compared with those of chlorinated and brominated DBPs. I-DBPs are almost always more cytotoxic and genotoxic than their chlorinated and brominated analogues. Iodoacetic acid is the most genotoxic of all DBPs studied to date, and diiodoacetamide and iodoacetamide are the most cytotoxic. We discuss I-DBP formation mechanisms during oxidation, disinfection, and distribution of drinking water, focusing on inorganic and organic iodine sources, oxidation kinetics of iodide, and formation pathways. Naturally occurring iodide, iodate, and iodinated organic compounds are regarded as important sources of I-DBPs. The apparent second-order rate constant and half-lives for oxidation of iodide or hypoiodous acid by various oxidants are highly variable, which is a key factor governing the iodine fate during drinking water treatment. In distribution systems, residual iodide and disinfectants can participate in reactions involving heterogeneous chemical oxidation, reduction, adsorption, and catalysis, which may eventually affect I-DBP levels in finished drinking water. The identification of unknown I-DBPs and total organic iodine analysis is also summarized in this Account, which provides a more complete picture of I-DBP formation in drinking water. As organic DBP precursors are difficult to completely remove during the drinking water treatment process, the removal of iodide provides a cost-effective solution for the control of I-DBP formation. This Account not only serves as a reference for future epidemiological studies to better assess human health risks due to exposure to I-DBPs in drinking water but also helps drinking water utilities, researchers, regulators, and the general public understand the formed species, levels, and formation mechanisms of I-DBPs in drinking water.

Disinfectant residual stability leading to disinfectant decay and by-product formation in drinking water distribution systems: A systematic review

Secondary disinfectants, such as chlorine and chloramine, have been widely applied to minimise microbial risks in drinking water during distribution. Key challenges have included the maintenance of stable concentrations of disinfectant residuals and the control of disinfection by-products that may form as a consequence of residual decay processes. Many factors may influence disinfectant residual stability and the consequential formation of by-products. Thus predictions of disinfectant stability and by-product formation are multifactorial problems, complete with numerous complications of parameter co-dependence and feedback amplification of some key parameters. The aim of this review was to derive an understanding of how disinfectant residual stability in drinking water distribution systems is impacted by various influencing factors such as water quality and operational parameters. Factors known to influence disinfectant stability and by-product formation were critically reviewed. A systematic review method was applied to identify 1809 journal articles published in the two decades from January 1998 to December 2017. From the initial screening, 161 papers were selected for detailed assessment. Important factors were identified to include temperature, water age, piping material, corrosion products, pH, hydraulic condition, disinfectant residual type and dosage and microbial activity. Microbial activity is a particularly complex parameter on which to base predictions since many factors are known to influence the degree and nature of such activity. These include temperature, water age, piping material, corrosion products, nutrients, natural organic matter, hydraulic condition and disinfectant residual type and dosage. Disinfectant types and dosages were found to be among the most important factors. Many knowledge gaps and research needs still remain, including the need for a more complete understanding of the factors that influence the production of nitrogenous disinfection by-products.

Photochemical degradation of iodate by UV/H2O2 process: Kinetics, parameters and enhanced formation of iodo-trihalomethanes during chloramination

In this paper, it was demonstrated that UV/H₂O₂ process can not only obviously promote the degradation rate of IO₃^-, but also greatly enhance iodo-trihalomethanes (I-THMs) formation in sequential chloramination. UV/H₂O₂ exhibited much faster IO₃^- decomposition than either UV or H₂O₂ treatment alone due to the contribution of highly reactive species including O^-, OH and e_aq^-. The degradation rate of IO₃^- was affected by H₂O₂ dosages, pH, UV intensity as well as the presence of natural organic matter (NOM). The calculated pseudo-first order rate constant gradually increased with H₂O₂ dosages and solution pH, but behaved directly proportional to the UV intensity. Although NOM remarkably reduced the degradation rate of IO₃^- in UV/H₂O₂ process, their presence greatly enhanced the formation of I-THMs during subsequent chloramination. The overwhelming majority of iodoform at high UV fluences was also observed, which indicated improved iodination degrees of the detected I-THMs. UV/H₂O₂ was proved to be more capable on the evolution of IO₃^- to I^- as well as I-THMs than UV and thereby enhanced the toxicity of disinfected waters in the following chloramination process. This study was among the first to provide a comprehensive understanding on the transformation of IO₃^- as the emerging iodine precursor to form I-THMs via diverse advanced oxidation process technologies like UV/H₂O₂.

Formation of iodinated trihalomethanes during chlorination of amino acid in waters

Chlorination is essential to provide safe drinking water. However, this process leads to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). In this study, tryptophan (Trp) has been selected as a precursor to conduct the chlorine disinfection. Moreover, the factors that affect the formation of trihalomethanes (THMs) and iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) are investigated. The formation pathway of Trp chlorination is proposed based on the intermediate products identified. According to the experimental results, the formation of THMs and I-THMs during Trp chlorination fitted a new first-order kinetic model. The dosage of chlorine, temperature, pH and the ratio of bromide and iodide had major influence on the formation of THMs and I-THMs during chlorination. In addition, the inhibition of luminescent bacteria Vibrio fischeri in the water sample increased during Trp chlorination.

Effect of UV irradiation on iodinated trihalomethane formation during post-chloramination

Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation has been widely used in drinking water treatment processes, but its influence on the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs), especially the emerging iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) during post-chloramination remains unclear. This study evaluated the impact of low pressure (LP) UV treatment on the formation of I-THMs during post-chloramination through two pathways. The first pathway is through the transition of DOM structure and composition during UV-chloramination, resulting significant increase of I-THM formation with increasing UV dosage in different dissolved organic matter (DOM)-containing water (49.7%-90.5% at 1160 mJ/cm²). With the application of excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), we found that I-THM formation in UV-chloraminated water correlated well with two ratios of three PARAFAC humic-like components (C3/C2 and C1/C2, R² = 0.958-1.000), suggesting that the ratios of fluorescent components can be used as reliable indicators for I-THM formation. Moreover, the shift in these fluorescent components is crucial for I-THM formation during UV-chloramination. Another pathway for UV irradiation to affect I-THM formation during post-chloramination is through the transformation of iodine species. Large amounts of reactive iodine species (HOI/I₂ and I₃^-) can be generated directly in the mixed iodine system by UV light, leading to the enhancement of iodine utilization factor (IUF) (up to 0.040) after post-chloramination. These results suggest that UV application to DOM-containing water may induce changes in organic precursors and iodine species so as to enhance I-THM formation during post-chloramination.

Insight into carbamazepine degradation by UV/monochloramine: Reaction mechanism, oxidation products, and DBPs formation

UV/monochloramine (NH₂Cl) process has attracted some attention for the elimination of contaminants of emerging concern as a novel advanced oxidation process. However, there is still much uncertainty on the performance and mechanisms of UV/NH₂Cl process because of its complexity and generation of various species of radicals, including NH₂^•, HO^•, Cl^• and other reactive chlorine species (RCS). The mechanism and influence factors of degradation of carbamazepine (CBZ) in the UV/NH₂Cl process were investigated, and a synergistic effect was observed. Degradation of CBZ under all investigated conditions followed pseudo-first order kinetics. The corresponding rate constant increased along with the dosage of NH₂Cl, and was affected significantly by the presence of bicarbonate and natural organic matter. The process has little pH-dependency, while the specific contribution of RCS and HO^• changed with solution pH, and RCS always act as a major contributor to the degradation of CBZ. Eleven byproducts of CBZ were identified and their respective evolution profiles were determined. The participation of UV in chloramination can reduce the formation of nitrogenous DBPs, but promote the formation of carbonaceous DBPs. Furthermore, when influent, sand filtered, and granular activated carbon filtered water was respectively used as background, degradation of CBZ was inhibited to different degree and more disinfection byproducts (DBPs) were generated, compared to deionized water. The electrical energy per order for degradation of CBZ in the UV/NH₂Cl process was also calculated to obtain some preliminary cost information.

Electrochemical reductive dehalogenation of iodine-containing contrast agent pharmaceuticals: Examination of reactions of diatrizoate and iopamidol using the method of rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE)

This study examined the electrochemical (EC) reduction of iodinated contrast media (ICM) exemplified by iopamidol and diatrizoate. The method of rotating ring-disc electrode (RRDE) was used to elucidate rates and mechanisms of the EC reactions of the selected ICMs. Experiments were carried at varying hydrodynamic conditions, concentrations of iopamidol, diatrizoate, natural organic matter (NOM) and model compounds (resorcinol, catechol, guaiacol) which were used to examine interactions between products of the EC reduction of ICMs and halogenation-active species. The data showed that iopamidol and diatrizoate were EC-reduced at potentials < -0.45 V vs. s.c.e. In the range of potentials -0.65 to -0.85 V their reduction was mass transfer-controlled. The presence of NOM and model compounds did not affect the EC reduction of iopamidol and diatrizoate but active iodine species formed as a result of the EC-induced transformations of these ICMs reacted readily with NOM and model compounds. These data provide more insight into the nature of generation of iodine-containing by-products in the case of reductive degradation of ICMs.

Deiodination of iopamidol by zero valent iron (ZVI) enhances formation of iodinated disinfection by-products during chloramination

Iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) is considered as one of iodine sources for formation of toxic iodinated disinfection byproducts (I-DBPs) during disinfection. This study investigated transformation of a typical ICM, iopamidol (IPM) by zero valent iron (ZVI) and the effect of transformation on the formation of I-DBPs during chloramination. It was found that the presence of ZVI could deiodinate IPM into I^- and the transformation of IPM exhibited a pseudo-first-order kinetics. Acidic circumstance, SO₄^2-, Cl^- and monochloramine could promote the transformation of IPM by ZVI, while SiO₃^2- inhibited the transformation of IPM. Moreover, the transformation of IPM by ZVI changed both the formed species and amounts of I-DBPs during chloramination. During the chloramination of IPM-containing water, CHCl₂I and iodoacetic acid were the predominant iodinated trihalomethanes (I-THMs) and iodinated haloacetic acids (I-HAAs), respectively in the absence of ZVI, while CHI₃ and triiodoacetic acid became the predominant ones with 1.0 g L^-1 ZVI. The addition of 5.0 g L^-1 ZVI increased I-DBPs formation amounts by 6.0 folds after 72 h and maximum formation of I-DBPs occurred at pH 5.0. Enhanced I-DBPs formation was also observed with various real water sources. Given that ZVI ubiquitously exists in the unlined cast iron distribution pipes, the deiodination of IPM by ZVI during distribution may increase the formation of I-DBPs, which needs receive enough attention.
