Abstract
Biofouling has been a persistent problem hindering the application of membranes in water treatment, and quorum quenching has been identified as an effective method for mitigating biofouling, but surface accumulation of live bacteria still induces biofilm secretion, which poses a significant challenge for sustained prevention of membrane biofouling. In this study, we utilized quercetin, a typical flavonoid with the dual functions of quorum quenching and bacterial inactivation, to evaluate its role in preventing biofilm proliferation and against biofouling. Quercetin exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), and the decreased bioactivity was positively correlated with the quercetin concentration, with inhibition rates of 53.1 % and 57.4 %, respectively, at the experimental concentrations. The RT-qPCR results demonstrated that quercetin inhibited AI-2 of E. coli and AGR of S. aureus mediated quorum sensing system, and reduced the expression of genes such as adhesion, virulence, biofilm secretion, and key regulatory proteases. As a result, the bacterial growth cycle was retarded and the biomass and biofilm maturation cycles were alleviated with the synergistic effect of quorum quenching and antibacterial activity. In addition, membrane biofouling was significantly declined in the dynamic operation experiments, dead cells in the biofilm overwhelmingly dominated, and the final normalized water fluxes were increased by more than 49.9 % and 34.5 % for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. This work demonstrates the potential for mitigating biofouling using protocols that quorum quenching and inactivate bacteria, also provides a unique and long-lasting strategy to alleviate membrane fouling.

Eat seldom is better than eat frequently: Pharmaceuticals degradation kinetics, enantiomeric profiling and microorganisms in moving bed biofilm reactors are affected by feast famine cycle times. Abstract
Feast-famine (FF) regimes improved the removal of recalcitrant pharmaceuticals in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs), but the optimal FF cycle remained unresolved. The effects of FF cycle time on the removal of bulk substrates (organic carbon and nitrogen) and trace pharmaceuticals by MBBR are systematically evaluated in this study. The feast to famine ratio was fixed to 1:2 to keep the same loading rate, but the time for the FF cycles varied from 18 h to 288 h. The MBBR adapted to the longest FF cycle time (288 h equaling 48 × HRT) resulted in significantly higher degradation rates (up to +183%) for 12 out of 28 pharmaceuticals than a continuously fed (non-FF) reactor. However, other FF cycle times (18, 36, 72 and 144 h) only showed a significant up-regulation for 2-3 pharmaceuticals compared to the non-FF reactor. Enantioselective degradation of metoprolol and propranolol occurred in the second phase of a two phase degradation, which was different for the longer FF cycle time. N-oxidation and N-demethylation pathways of tramadol and venlafaxine differed across the FF cycle time suggestin the FF cycle time varied the predominant transformation pathways of pharmaceuticals. The abundance of bacteria in the biofilms varied considerably between different FF cycle times, which possibly caused the biofilm to remove more recalcitrant bulk organic C and pharmaceuticals under long cycle times.

Abstract
In response to the demand for advanced purification of industrial secondary effluent, a new method has been developed for treating chlorophenol wastewater using the novel ceramsite-based Ti/SnO2-Sb particle electrodes (Ti/SnO2-Sb/CB) enhanced electrocatalytic denitrification biofilter (EDNBF-P) to achieve removal of chlorophenols (CPs), denitrification, and reduction of effluent toxicity. The results showed that significantly improved CPs and TN removal efficiency at low COD/N compared to conventional denitrification biofilter, with CPs removal rates increasing by 0.33%-59.27% and TN removal rates increasing by 12.53%-38.92%. Under the conditions of HRT = 2h, 3V voltage, charging times = 12h, and 25 °C, the concentrations of the CPs in the effluent of EDNBF-P were all below 1 mg/L, the TN concentration was below 15 mg/L, while the effluent toxicity reached the low toxicity level. Additionally, the Ti/SnO2-Sb/CB particle electrodes effectively alleviated the accumulation of NO2--N caused by applied voltage. The Silanimonas, Pseudomonas and Rhodobacter was identified as the core microorganism for denitrification and toxicity reduction. This study validated that EDNBF-P could achieve synergistic treatment of CPs and TN through electrocatalysis and microbial degradation, providing a methodological support for achieving advanced purification of chlorophenol wastewater with low COD/N in industrial applications.

Effect of antibiotics on the performance of moving bed biofilm reactor for simultaneous removal of nitrogen, phosphorus and copper(II) from aquaculture wastewater. ECOTOXICOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY 2023; 266:115590. [PMID: 37839187 DOI: 10.1016/j.ecoenv.2023.115590] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 07/28/2023] [Revised: 09/24/2023] [Accepted: 10/11/2023] [Indexed: 10/17/2023]
Abstract
Co-existence of NO3--N, antibiotics, phosphorus (P), and Cu2+ in aquaculture wastewater has been frequently detected, but simultaneous removal and relationship between enzyme and pollutants removal are far from satisfactory. In this study, simultaneous removal of NO3--N, P, antibiotics, and Cu2+ by moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was established. About 95.51 ± 3.40% of NO3--N, 61.24 ± 3.51% of COD, 18.74 ± 1.05% of TP, 88% of Cu2+ were removed synchronously in stage I, and antibiotics removal in stages I-IV was 73.00 ± 1.32%, 79.53 ± 0.88%, 51.07 ± 3.99%, and 33.59 ± 2.73% for tetracycline (TEC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), respectively. The removal kinetics and toxicity of MBBR effluent were examined, indicating that the first order kinetic model could better reflect the removal of NO3--N, TN, and antibiotics. Co-existence of multiple antibiotics and Cu2+ was the most toxicity to E. coli growth. Key enzyme activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, and its relationship with TN removal were investigated. The results showed that enzymes activities were significantly different under the co-existence of antibiotics and Cu2+. Meanwhile, different components of biofilm were extracted and separated, and enzymatic and non-enzymatic effects of biofilm were evaluated. The results showed that 70.00%- 94.73% of Cu2+ was removed by extracellular enzyme in stages I-V, and Cu2+ removal was mainly due to the action of extracellular enzyme. Additionally, microbial community of biofilm was assessed, showing that Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Gemmatimonadetes played an important role in the removal of NO3--N, Cu2+, and antibiotics at the phylum level. Finally, chemical bonds of attached and detached biofilm were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and effect of nitrogen (N) and P was proposed under the co-existence of antibiotics and Cu2+. This study provides a theoretical basis for further exploring the bioremediation of NO3--N, Cu2+, and antibiotics in aquaculture wastewater.

Abstract
Sponge iron (SI) is a potential material for removing nitrate and phosphate from water. We decorated the SI with copper (Cu) to enhance its removal performance. To gain insight into the nitrate and phosphate removal utilizing SI/Cu and microbial coupling systems, three biofilters filled with corn cob (CC), corn cob + sponge iron (CS) and corn cob + sponge iron/copper (CSCu) were constructed. The results showed that the effluent NO3--N and PO43--P concentrations of CSCu remained consistently below 1 and 0.1 mg/L. The introduction of SI/Cu led to the enrichment of the Dechloromonas genus, making it the dominant microbial group, occupying 42.65% of the effective sequences. Modification of SI with Cu increased nitrogen cycle-related functional genes abundance in CSCu, with a 634% increase in nirS compared to CS. These findings proved that SI/Cu was a promising material, providing an approach to concomitantly removing nitrate and phosphate.

Abstract
Physiological changes with the assist role of soluble microbial products (SMP) of preserved denitrifying sludge (DS) undergoing long-term stress of starvation under different storage temperature is extremely important. In this study, SMP extracted from DS were added into DS in starvation condition under room temperature (15-20 °C), 4 °C and -20 °C with three different bio-augmentation phases of 10, 15 and 30 days. Experimental results showed that added SMP in room temperature was optimal for preservation of DS under starvation stress with optimized dosage of 2.0 mL mL-1 sludge and bio-augmentation phase of 10 d. SMP was more effective in maintaining the specific denitrification activity of DS, and it was nearly boosted to 94.1 % of control one due to assist of 2 times SMP addition with 10 days interval of each. Under assist of SMP, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) secretion was enhanced as the defense layer to withstand starvation stress, and the protein may be utilized as an alternative substrate to gain energy, accelerate electron transport and transfer during denitrification process. This investigation revealed the feasibility of SMP as an economical and robust strategy for preservation of DS.

Abstract
Reservoirs have been served as the major source of drinking water for dozens of years. The water quality safety of large and medium reservoirs increasingly becomes the focus of public concern. Field test has proved that water-lifting and aeration system (WLAS) is a piece of effective equipment for in situ control and improvement of water quality. However, its intrinsic bioremediation mechanism, especially for nitrogen removal, still lacks in-depth investigation. Hence, the dynamic changes in water quality parameters, carbon source metabolism, species compositions and co-occurrence patterns of microbial communities were systematically studied in Jinpen Reservoir within a whole WLAS running cycle. The WLAS operation could efficiently reduce organic carbon (19.77%), nitrogen (21.55%) and phosphorus (65.60%), respectively. Biolog analysis revealed that the microbial metabolic capacities were enhanced via WLAS operation, especially in bottom water. High-throughput sequencing demonstrated that WLAS operation altered the diversity and distributions of microbial communities in the source water. The most dominant genus accountable for aerobic denitrification was identified as Dechloromonas. Furthermore, network analysis revealed that microorganisms interacted more closely through WLAS operation. Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) and total nitrogen (TN) were regarded as the two main physicochemical parameters influencing microbial community structures, as confirmed by redundancy analysis (RDA) and Mantel test. Overall, the results will provide a scientific basis and an effective way for strengthening the in-situ bioremediation of micro-polluted source water.

Abstract
The practical application of solid phase denitrification (SPD) was hindered by either poor water quality from natural plant-like materials or high cost of pure synthetic biodegradable polymers. In this study, by combining polycaprolactone (PCL) with new natural materials (peanut shell, sugarcane bagasse), two novel economical solid carbon sources (SCSs) named as PCL/PS and PCL/SB were developed. Pure PCL and PCL/TPS (PCL with thermal plastic starch) were supplied as controls. During the 162-day operation, especially in the shortest HRT (2 h), higher NO3--N removal was achieved by PCL/PS (87.60%±0.06%) and PCL/SB (87.93%±0.05%) compared to PCL (83.28%±0.07%) and PCL/TPS (81.83%±0.05%). The predicted abundance of functional enzymes revealed the potential metabolism pathways of major components of SCSs. The natural components entered the glycolytic cycle by enzymatical generation of intermediates, while biopolymers being converted into small molecule products under specific enzyme activities (i.e., carboxylesterase, aldehyde dehydrogenase), together providing electrons and energy for denitrification.

Fast start-up of ANAMMOX biofilm processes at low temperatures by economical quorum sensing regulation: The importance of endogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactones from enhanced inoculated sludge. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2022; 214:114097. [PMID: 35973461 DOI: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.114097] [Citation(s) in RCA: 7] [Impact Index Per Article: 3.5] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 06/20/2022] [Revised: 07/21/2022] [Accepted: 08/08/2022] [Indexed: 06/15/2023]
Abstract
The start-up of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (ANAMMOX) processes at low temperatures is quite difficult. In this study, the fast start-up (43 days) of ANAMMOX biofilm processes at 18 ± 3 °C was achieved by adding enhanced ANAMMOX granules (LT-granules) into the inoculated denitrification sludge. The results showed that the addition of LT-granules significantly reduced the duration of the three start-up phases (cell lysis phase, activity lag phase, and activity elevation phase) of reactor R2 compared with the control group R1 without LT-granules. It was demonstrated that LT-granules released high contents of N-hexanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone (C6-HSL), N-octanoyl-DL-homoserine lactone (C8-HSL), and N-3-oxohexanoyl-L-homoserine lactone (3OC6-HSL). The C6-HSL and C8-HSL from LT-granules were strongly positively correlated with the concentrations of polysaccharides (TB-PS) and proteins (TB-PN) in tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) in R2 biofilms, respectively. Thus, LT-granules promoted the release of TB-PS and TB-PN from the biofilm in R2 during activity lag and activity elevation phases, improving the biofilm adhesion performance. Furthermore, it was proved that the C6-HSL, C8-HSL, and 3OC6-HSL from LT-granules significantly stimulated the relative abundance of Candidatus Brocadia genus and the expression of functional genes hzo and hzsA in R2 biofilms during activity lag and activity elevation phases. These are the main reasons why adding LT-granules promoted the start-up of reactor R2 at 18 ± 3 °C effectively. This study is the first work to accelerate the start-up of the ANAMMOX biofilm system at the low temperature by the economical quorum sensing (QS) regulation based on endogenous N-acyl-homoserine lactone signals (AHLs) and supply a new way for the rapid start-up of ANAMMOX processes in the low-temperature environment.

Upgradation of sludge deep dewatering conditioners through persulfate activated by ferrous: Compatibility with sludge incineration, dewatering mechanism, ecological risks elimination and carbon emission performance. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2022; 211:113024. Abstract
Serious loss of organic substances and notable release of refractory intracellular organics and cell-free antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) caused by cell lysis are found when quick lime, FeCl3, and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) were used as sludge conditioners, which is not feasible to sludge separate incineration and increases ecological risks. Therefore, persulfate oxidation through ferrous (Fe2+-Na2S2O8) activation was applied for the upgradation of sludge conditioner in China, the specific resistance to filtration (SRF) and capillary suction time (CST) significantly decreased and the removed water increased from 40% to 54%, implying that the persulfate activated by ferrous (PAF) conditioner presents good performance in sludge dewatering. Organic matter content and heating value of sludge merely decreased, and Cl- content in sludge simultaneously decreased with the use of the PAF conditioner, thereby effectively reducing the corrosion risk to the incinerator and showing good compatibility with sludge separate incineration. In accordance with ferrous activation, sulfate radical plays an important role in sludge dewatering process because remarkable decrease in polysaccharides and protein contents from tightly bound extracellular polymeric substances (TB-EPS) was discovered. Based on flow cytometry analysis, slight cell lysis presented better filtrate quality by the use of PAF conditioner, 49.3% of refractory intracellular organics was removed and the respective ermB, tetW and blaTEM decreased by factors of 37.3%, 54.5% and 63.6% due to the strong oxidizing property of sulfate radical. The intensive decrease in refractory intracellular organics and cell-free ARGs will reduce the ecological risks. The total carbon emission significantly decreases to 1771.1 kgCO2/tDS when PAF conditioner was employed, which is beneficial to the upgradation of sludge deep dewatering conditioners.

Correlation of structural extracellular polymeric substances in the mesh biofilms with solids retention time and biofilm hydraulic resistance in dynamic membrane bioreactors. Abstract
Dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR), which mainly relied on the in-situ formed biofilms on support materials with large aperture (e.g., nylon mesh) to separate fine particles in wastewater, has attracted a lot of attentions due to low cost. The filtration performance of DMBR is mainly determined by the structure and hydraulic resistance of biofilms formed on the mesh. Therefore, understanding the correlation of operation conditions with mesh biofilm compositions and permeability are critically important for optimizing DMBR operation. In present study, how structural extracellular polymeric substances, including alginate-like extracellular polysaccharide (ALE) and amyloid-like protein (AP), in mesh biofilms correlate to solids retention time (SRT) and biofilm structures was explored in DMBRs. At 5d-SRT, compact and gel-like mesh biofilms were formed with a high specific filtration resistance (SFR) of 459 × 109 m/g, while at 40d-SRT porous mesh biofilms were developed with a low SFR of 24 × 109 m/g. Consequently, the 5d-SRT MBR experienced more rapid rise in transmembrane pressure. Further studies found that the 5d-SRT mesh biofilms had a higher AP content, which was positively correlated to biofilm hydraulic resistance. On the contrary, the 40d-SRT mesh biofilms contained a higher content of ALE, suggesting that ALE was negatively correlated to biofilm hydraulic resistance. Therefore, AP instead of ALE likely played a more important role in the formation of compact and gel-like mesh biofilms.

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH INTERNATIONAL 2022; 29:49335-49345. Abstract
In this study, effects of carbon to nitrogen (COD/TN) ratios of biogas slurry on shortcut nitrification-denitrification in a pilot-scale integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) system were investigated. Lowering the COD/TN ratio from 11.7 to 6.2 exerted a negative impact on shortcut nitrification-denitrification performance. Accordingly, the NH3-N and TN removal rates decreased from 94.4 to 91.2% and 92.3 to 85.9%, respectively. The dynamics of microbial assembly was analyzed by MiSeq sequencing, and the denitrifying functional genes were quantified by qPCR. The results showed that ammonia oxidizing bacteria and amoA gene were more abundant on the biofilm of oxic tank, indicating they play a key role in NH3-N removal. Autotrophic, endogenous, and fast heterotrophic kinetics denitrifiers were coexisted and enriched in the IFAS system with a decreasing of COD/TN ratio. TN removal was mainly affected by denitrifiers (including Arenimonas, Acidovorax, and Thaurea) harboring narG and nirS genes. Canonical correspondence analysis proved that COD/TN ratio was the most critical factor driving the succession of microbial community. Dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH were found positively correlated with denitrifiers at low COD/TN ratio conditions. As a result, NH3-N and TN removal were effectively enhanced when the DO level in the oxic tank of IFAS system was increased to 1.0-3.0 mg/L.

Intermittent Microaeration Technology to Enhance the Carbon Source Release of Particulate Organic Matter in Domestic Sewage. WATER 2022. [DOI: 10.3390/w14121876] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 12/10/2022]
Abstract
Domestic sewage treatment plants often have insufficient carbon sources in the influent water. To solve this problem, the commonly used technical means include an additional carbon source, primary sludge fermentation, and excess sludge fermentation, but these methods are uneconomical, unsustainable, and not applicable to small-scale wastewater treatment plants. Intermittent microaeration technology has the advantages of low energy-consumption, ease of application, and low cost, and can effectively promote anaerobic digestion of municipal sludge; however little research has been reported on its use to enhance the carbon sources release of particulate organic matter (POM) from domestic wastewater. Therefore, the effect of intermittent microaeration on the carbon source release of POM was evaluated in this study, with POM as the control test. The results showed that the release concentration of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was the highest on day 4 under microaerobic conditions, and the concentrations of SCOD, NH4+-N, and PO43−-P in the liquid phase were 1153, 137.1, and 13 mg/L, respectively. Compared with the control group, the SCOD concentration increased by 34.2%, and the NH4+-N and PO43−-P concentrations decreased by 18.65% and 17.09%, respectively. Intermittent microaeration can effectively promote the growth of Paludibacter, Actinomyces, and Trichococcus hydrolytic fermentation functional bacteria. Their relative abundances increased by 282.83%, 21.77%, and 23.47%, respectively, compared with the control group. It can simultaneously inhibit the growth of acetate-type methanogenic archaea, Methanosaeta and Methanosarcina, with a decrease in relative abundances of 16.81% and 6.63%, respectively. The aforementioned data show that intermittent microaeration can not only promote the hydrolysis of POM, but can also reduce the loss of acetic acid carbon source, which is a cost-effective technical way to enhance the release of a carbon source of particulate organic matter in domestic sewage.

Abstract
Anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) process was achieved in a constructed rapid infiltration (CRI) system and the effect of organic matter on the anammox performance and microbial community structure was investigated. The results showed that the removal efficiencies of NH4+-N, NO2-N and TN were 99.7 ± 0.3%, 99.8 ± 0.2% and 91.3 ± 0.2% respectively after 83 days of acclimation without the presence of organic matter in the influent. The average TN removal efficiency increased by 3.2%-7.7% due to the synergistic effect of anammox and denitrification at a low level of organic matter concentration (10-30 mg COD/L). At medium or high organic matter concentration (50-100 mg COD/L), denitrification gradually replaced anammox as the predominant nitrogen removal route due to its stronger ability to compete with substrate, resulting in a significant decline in anammox activity. The contribution rate of anammox to nitrogen removal dropped by 70.3% with the influent COD increased from 0 to 100 mg/L, and the TN removal efficiency decreased to 68.4 ± 3.6% since the anammox was seriously suppressed. 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing analysis illustrated that the genus Candidatus Kuenenia was the predominant anammox bacteria (AAOB) with a relative abundance of 12.63% when no organic matter was applied. While the heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria (DNB) Thauera gradually dominated the community with the elevated organic matter introduction. The findings of this study provide useful information for the stable operation and optimal regulation of anammox in the CRI system when the influent contains organic matter.

Abstract
In environmental microbiology, the ability to assess, in a high-throughput way, single-cells within microbial communities is key to understand their heterogeneity. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) uses fluorescently labeled oligonucleotide probes to detect, identify, and quantify single cells of specific taxonomic groups. The combination of Flow Cytometry (FLOW) with FISH (FLOW-FISH) enables high-throughput quantification of complex whole cell populations, which when associated with fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) enables sorting of target microorganisms. These sorted cells may be investigated in many ways, for instance opening new avenues for cytomics at a single-cell scale. In this review, an overview of FISH and FLOW methodologies is provided, addressing conventional methods, signal amplification approaches, common fluorophores for cell physiology parameters evaluation, and model variation techniques as well. The coupling of FLOW-FISH-FACS is explored in the context of different downstream applications of sorted cells. Current and emerging applications in environmental microbiology to outline the interactions and processes of complex microbial communities within soil, water, animal microbiota, polymicrobial biofilms, and food samples, are described.

Abstract
Poor effect of contaminants removal efficiency and low organic matter content of activated sludge are common in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China due to the low-strength wastewater. An anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (AAO) and an adsorption/AAO (A/AAO) combined system were established simultaneously to conduct a comparative study for realizing the conversion of carbon source in influent and the enrichment and recovery of proteins and amino acids through the assimilation of ammonia nitrogen. The experimental results showed that 63.5% of the organic matter in influent was adsorbed and flocculated in adsorption process, and the removal rates of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen and total phosphorus in A/AAO process were 88.7%, 77.1%, and 93.0% respectively, which were remarkably better than those in AAO process owing to the addition of improved carbon source. Ammonia assimilation rate of A/AAO process was 26.7% higher than that of AAO process, which implied that the ammonia used to synthesize sludge protein was prominently increased. Furthermore, intracellular proteins and amino acids in A/AAO process were 20% higher than those of AAO process, and the quality was equivalent with fish meal or soybean meal as feed. In addition, the microbial community analysis based on 16S rDNA was conducted. Dechloromonas, Zoogloea, Nitrospira, and Flavobacterium were the main genera, and played important roles in nutrient removal and ammonia nitrogen assimilation. The integration of adsorption process was significant to low-strength wastewater treatment and the improvement of excess sludge quality, which is a prospective inspiration for the resource recovery-based wastewater treatment process.

Abstract
A denitrifying strain with high efficiency at low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio of 2.0 was isolated and characterized. It belongs to the genus Pseudomonas. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that GF2 was rod-shaped. The nitrate removal efficiency reached up to 92.41% (1.85 mg L-1 h-1) with the C/N ratio of 2.0 and the nitrite accumulation eventually decreased to 0.88 mg L-1. By response surface method (RSM) method, three reaction conditions of strain GF2 were optimized, including pH, C/N ratio, and nitrate concentration. Nitrogen balance and gas detection revealed that 88.03% of nitrogen was removed in gaseous form (included 98.80% nitrogen gas), which confirmed its efficient denitrification ability and pathway. 3D fluorescence spectrum (3D-EEM) manifested that in the absence of organic matter, strain GF2 can utilize extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) as carbon source for efficient denitrification. This research strived to provide new research ideas for low C/N ratio sewage treatment.

Abstract
Methane is a type of renewable fuel that can generate many types of high value-added chemicals, however, besides heat and power production, there is little methane utilization in most of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) all round the world currently. In this review, the status of methane production performance from WWTPs was firstly investigated. Subsequently, based on the identification and classification of methane oxidizing bacteria (MOB), the key enzymes and metabolic pathway of MOB were presented in depth. Then the production, extraction and purification process of high value-added chemicals, including methanol, ectoine, biofuel, bioplastic, methane protein and extracellular polysaccharides, were introduced in detail, which was conducive to understand the bioconversion process of methane. Finally, the use of methane in wastewater treatment process, including nitrogen removal, emerging contaminants removal as well as resource recovery was extensively explored. These findings could provide guidance in the development of sustainable economy and environment, and facilitate biological methane conversion by using MOB in further attempts.

Abstract
This study demonstrated the feasibility of anaerobic ammonia oxidation (anammox) served as tertiary nitrogen removal process. An upflow fixed-bed reactor (UFBR) pre-inoculated with anammox bacteria (AnAOB) followed an anoxic/oxic (A/O) reactor treating magnetic-coagulation pretreated municipal wastewater. When bypassing 15% of influent into UFBR, UFBR removed 5.37 mg-TN/L contributing to 23.4% on total TN removal, in which the combination of partial nitritation and partial denitrification with anammox was main nitrogen removal pathway. Relatively low concentrations of NH4+-N and anaerobic environment promoted the growth of ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) in the inner-layer of biofilm in UFBR. The cooperation of AOA and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) with AnAOB was achieved, with AOA, AOB, and AnAOB abundances of 0.01-0.32%, 0.25-0.44%, and 0.77-2.18% on the biofilm, respectively. Metagenomic analysis found that although AOB was the main NH4+-N oxidizer, archaeal amo gene on biofilm increased threefold during 90 days' treatment.

Abstract
Microbial community may respond to different adverse conditions and result in the variation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in denitrification biofilm; this study discovered the role of EPS in accordance with the analysis of cyclic diguanylate (c-di-GMP) and electron equilibrium (EE) under low organic loading rate, shock organic loading rate and low temperature conditions. Good nitrate removal performance could be achieved under shock organic loading rate and low temperature conditions; however, owing to the low organic loading rate, the carbon source was preferentially utilized for biomass growth. Tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) contents progressively increased and facilitated cell adhesion and biofilm formation. The stable TB protein (TB-PN) content in TB-EPS built a cross-linked network to maintain internal biofilm structure and led to the rapid biosynthesis of polysaccharides, which could further enhance microbial adhesion and improve nitrate removal. C-di-GMP played an important role in biomass retention and biofilm formation, based on the correlation analysis of c-di-GMP and EPS. TB polysaccharide (TB-PS) contents presented a significant positive correlation with c-di-GMP content, microbial adhesion and biofilm stabilization was further enhanced through c-di-GMP regulation. In addition, a remarkable negative correlation between electron deletion rate (EDR) and TB-PN and TB-PS was discovered, and TB-PS was required to serve as energy source to enhance denitrification according to EE analysis. Surprisingly, dynamic microbial community was observed due to the drastic community succession under low temperature conditions, and the discrepancy between the dominant species for denitrification was found under shock organic loading rate and low temperature conditions. The notable increase in bacterial strains Simlicispira, Pseudomonas and Chryseobacterium was conducive to biofilm formation and denitrification under shock organic loading rate, while Dechloromonas and Zoogloea dramatically enriched for nitrate removal under low temperature conditions. The high abundance of Dechloromonas improved the secretion of EPS through the downstream signal transduction, and the c-di-GMP conserved in Pseudomonas concurrently facilitated to enhance exopolysaccharide production to shock organic loading rate and low temperature conditions.

Abstract
Denitrification in mixed culture system has been extensively researched to date, but few studies have focused on accelerating the process using redox mediators to promote electron transfer. Strain L2, an iron-reducing bacteria, can remove 75.44% of nitrate under temperature of 30.60 °C, pH of 6.75 and Fe2+ concentration of 27.86 mg·L-1. Additionally, the removal rate of nitrate reached 1.516 mg·L-1·h-1 in 8 h with the addition of 0.030 mmol·L-1 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ), which increased by 1.38 times than control group. Furthermore, analysis by fluorescence spectroscopy, flow cytometer and gas chromatography demonstrated that HNQ positively stimulated denitrification. This study provides a reference for enhancing denitrification in mixed culture and lays the foundation for the practical application of redox mediators in groundwater treatment.

Abstract
Sponge iron (s-Fe0) is a potential alternative electron donor for nitrate reduction. To gain insight into the mechanism of denitrification in a constructed wetland- sponge iron coupled system (CW-Fe0 system), the removal performance and reduction characteristics of nitrate in constructed wetlands (CWs) with and without s-Fe0 application were compared. Results indicated that s-Fe0 intensified the removal of nitrate with a 6h-HRT. The nitrate removal efficiency was improved by 16-76 % with various influent NO3--N concentrations (10-30 mg L-1) and at a chemical oxygen demand(COD)/N ratio of 5. The rates of chemical denitrification were positively correlated with the dosage of s-Fe0 and negatively correlated with the influent COD concentration. 16S rDNA sequencing revealed that hydrogen-utilizing autotrophic denitrifier of Hydrogenophaga was highly enriched (accounting for 10 % of the total OTUs) only in CW-Fe0 system. The micro-environment created by s-Fe0 was suitable for heterotrophic denitrifiers of Thauera, Tessaracoccus and Simplicispira. The determination of physiological indicators for plants showed that the application of s-Fe0 causes abiotic stress to wetland plants (Canna indica L.). Nevertheless, s-Fe0 can be used as a substrate for CWs, since it allows a high-efficiency removal of nitrate by mediating chemical denitrification and hydrogen-driven autotrophic denitrification.

Abstract
Organ carbon are often used to enhance denitrification in wastewater treatment. However, their possible effects on microbial interactions are very limited. In this work, an anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) coupled with sulfur autotrophic/mixotrophic denitrification (SAD/SMD) system was used to investigate the changes in microbial interactions among the microbial communities under different nutrient condition. The removal efficiency of total nitrogen increased from 70% (SAD) to 97% (SMD). The Illumina sequencing analysis indicated that Planctomycetes was the most dominant bacterial phylum in anammox system. Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas, two typical autotrophic denitrifiers, decreased significantly from 31.9% to 17.7%-12.2% and 9.3%, when the nutrient condition changed from SAD to SMD (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, some heterotrophic or mixotrophic denitrifying bacteria, including Gemmobacter, Pseudomonas and Thauera increased significantly (P < 0.05). Molecular ecological network (MEN) analysis showed that the addition of organic carbon substantially altered the overall architecture of the network. Compared with SAD, the SMD had shorter path lengths, indicating higher transfer efficiencies of information and materials among different microorganism. The addition of organic carbon increased the microbial interaction complexity of Proteobacteria. The links of Thiobacillus, which was a typical sulfur-oxidizing autotrophic denitrifying bacteria, significantly reduced (P < 0.05) with the addition of organic carbon, while the links of the heterotrophic bacteria Geobacter significantly increased (P < 0.05). This study provided new insights into our understanding of the shifts in the bacteria community and their microbial interactions under different nutrient conditions (SAD and SMD) in sulfur-supported denitrification system.

Abstract
Based on the collection and analysis of essential data from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in recent ten years, the work provides the wastewater characteristics and energy consumption performance in full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) process in East Taihu basin, China. High-quality effluent was achieved although the influent carbon source was not beneficial to total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal. The average specific energy consumption (SEC) was 0.52 kWh/m3, which was remarkably lower than that of full-scale MBR process in developed countries, however, the average SEC value was higher than that of conventional activated sludge (CAS) process in China. In addition, the SEC value was largely reduced in 2018, and the regulation of suction pump and aeration mode were considered as the main control methods. Energy consumption will increase along with the influent volume, while the elevation of COD and NH4+-N reduction will bring about relatively low energy consumption. Furthermore, sustainability index was established to comprehensively evaluate the performance of full-scale MBR process, meaning that with relatively low permeate ratio of effluent, full-scale MBR process presented to be inferior to CAS process in sustainability and not feasible to be applied in the upgradation and construction of WWTPs.

Abstract
Acetic acid and sodium acetate are generally supplied to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China to improve total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal, and the addition of carbon source also facilitates to increase sludge growth rate and further provides material basis for the extraction of proteins and amino acids from activated sludge. To recycle ammonia nitrogen resources, a system that combined adsorption and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/AAO) process for treating low strength wastewater was established. Experimental results showed that by the addition of carbon substrate from a mixture of anaerobically fermented adsorption sludge, the average removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, TN, and TP were 88%, 96.9%, 93.9%, and 92.1%, respectively, and the ratio of nitrogen assimilation to nitrogen dissimilation significantly increased by a factor of 2.5. Through energy analysis (based on adenosine triphosphate, ATP), sludge flocculation capacity and settling property, it was found that the AAO process sludge presented the logarithmic growth characteristics. The respective sludge protein and amino acids contents increased by over 11.4% and 40.3%, and the synthetic products of glutamic acid, alanine and aspartate increased through the assimilation of ammonia nitrogen, thereby indicating that replenishing the carbon substrate could markedly enhance protein and amino acids contents in AAO process sludge. Moreover, the diversity of the microbial community in adsorption process was relatively rich, the diversity in the adsorption process sludge was the highest, while the diversity of the AAO process sludge evidently decreased. The microbial community in each process was similarly based on 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis, microflora was prominent in the AAO process, with Dechloromonas, Flavobacterium, Zoogloea, Unclassified_Rhodocyclaceae and Thauera as the dominant species. Promising carbon utilization facilitates contaminants removal in low strength wastewater treatment and is conducive to protein production through ammonia nitrogen assimilation.

Abstract
Denitrification biofilters (DNBFs) are widely used in advanced nitrogen removal of wastewater with low C/N and effective biofilm formation is critical to their long-term operation. Hereby the influence of rhamnolipid addition in DNBFs was investigated for the first time. Gradient concentrations (0, 20, 40, 80, 120 mg/L) of rhamnolipid were applied to investigate nitrogen removal, biofilm properties and microbial community of lab-scale DNBFs. A significant increase of nitrogen removal was observed in rhamnolipid-treated DNBFs (p < 0.05). Total solid (TS), extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and adhesion force of biofilms in DNBF with 120 mg/L rhamnolipid reached the maximum, which were 2.17, 2.15 and 3.36 times of those in the control, respectively. Moreover, rhamnolipid exhibited an improvement in abundance of Simplicispira and Gemmatimonas which were responsible for enhanced biofilm formation and denitrification. The results suggested that rhamnolipid addition can be a novel strategy to improve the start-up and denitrification performance of DNBFs.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the performance of biological denitrification in an anoxic sequencing batch biofilm reactor (ASBBR) and its nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. After 90 days operation, the effluent chemical oxygen demand and total nitrogen removal efficiencies high of 94.8% and 95.0%, respectively. Both polysaccharides and protein contents were reduced in bound EPS (TB-EPS) and loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) after biofilm formation. According to typical cycle, N2O release rate was related to the free nitrous acid (FNA) concentration with the maximum value of 3.88 μg/min and total conversion rate of 1.27%. Two components were identified from EEM-PARAFAC model in soluble microbial products (SMP). Protein-like substances for component 1 changed significantly in denitrification process, whereas humic-like and fulvic acid-like substances for component 2 remained relatively stable. High-throughput sequencing results showed that Lysobacter, Tolumonas and Thauera were the dominant genera, indicating the co-existence of autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrifiers in ASBBR.
