Nitrous oxide emissions from cascade hydropower reservoirs in the upper Mekong River

Nitrous oxide (N2O) Emissions at the Air-Water-Sediment Interfaces of Cascade Reservoirs in the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau: Spatial Patterns and Environmental Controls

The construction of cascade reservoirs can interfere with the natural hydrologic cycles of basins, causing negative environmental effects such as altering the emission patterns of the Nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. To elucidate the impact of cascade reservoirs construction on river N2O emissions, we utilized the thin boundary model and the incubation experiments to estimate the N2O fluxes at the air-water interface and at the water-sediment interface of cascade reservoirs on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, respectively. Additionally, we explored the influence of various factors, with particular emphasis on damming, on N2O emissions and production. Moreover, we identified the main pathways of N2O production and proposed management strategies to mitigate N2O emissions from cascade reservoirs. The findings revealed that N2O fluxes at the air-water interface and the water-sediment interface were 4.73 ± 1.32 μmol · m-2 · d-1 and 15.56 ± 1.98 μmol · m-2 · d-1, respectively. Influenced by temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), resource substances (active nitrogen substrates and dissolved organic carbon (DOC)) and reservoir properties (scale, hydraulic retention time (HRT), reservoir age, etc.), the N2O concentration and flux exhibited notable spatial heterogeneity, gradually increasing downstream. Temperature has a significant direct impact on N2O flux, as well as indirect effects through DO and resource chemicals. Furthermore, the correlation between dissolved oxygen utilization rate (AOU) and net N2O flux (△N2O) indicated that N2O emissions at the water-air interface were primarily attributable to nitrification, whereas those at the water-sediment interface were predominantly driven by denitrification. These findings not only enhance our comprehension of N2O emissions at various interfaces of cascade reservoirs but also offer theoretical backing for the formulation of management strategies aimed at efficiently mitigating N2O emissions from continuously dammed rivers.

Controlling factors and sources-specific ecological risks associated with toxic metals in core sediments from cascade reservoirs in Southwest China

Toxic metals (TMs) in reservoir sediments pose significant risks to ecosystem security and human safety, yet their presence in the cascade reservoirs of the Lancang River remains understudied. This research examined TMs in core sediments from the Manwan (MW) and Dachaoshan (DCS) cascade reservoirs, aiming to elucidate contamination characteristics, controlling factors, and source-specific ecological risks. The study revealed that the concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, and Zn in the MW Reservoir (37.3, 0.54, 95.1, 44.0, 0.09, 44.8, and 135.7 mg/kg) were notably higher compared to the DCS Reservoir (14.6, 0.30, 82.6, 31.0, 0.08, 36.6, and 108.7 mg/kg). While both reservoirs demonstrated elevated contamination levels of Cd and Hg, the MW Reservoir also exhibited high levels of As, whereas the DCS Reservoir showed relatively high levels of Pb. Mining activities in upstream metal deposits significantly correlated Cd, Hg, and Zn in the MW Reservoir with sulfur. In both reservoir sediments, Cr and Ni displayed a greater affinity for iron oxides, while As, Cd, Cu, Hg, and Zn showed more affinity with manganese oxides. Ecological risk index (RI) values in half of the sediments from the MW Reservoir ranged from 300 to 600, denoting a significant ecological risk. Conversely, in the DCS Reservoir, 93.3 % of the sediments exhibited RI values between 150 and 300, signifying a moderate ecological risk. Source-oriented ecological risks highlighted the need for particular attention to Cd from anthropogenic sources in the MW Reservoir. These findings underscore the importance of implementing measures for TM contamination prevention and control, contributing to strategic planning for sustainable water resource management in the Lancang-Mekong River.

Elucidation of the dominant factors influencing N2O emission in water-level fluctuation zones in a karst canyon reservoir, southwest China

The water-level fluctuations zones (WLFZs) are crucial transitional interfaces within river-reservoir systems, serving as hotspots for N2O emission. However, the comprehension of response patterns and mechanisms governing N2O emission under hydrological fluctuation remains limited, especially in karstic canyon reservoirs, which introduces significant uncertainty to N2O flux assessments. Soil samples were collected from the WLFZs of the Hongjiadu (HJD) Reservoir along the water flow direction from transition zone (T1 and T2) to lacustrine zone (T3, T4 and T5) at three elevations for each site. These soil columns were used to conduct simulation experiments under various water-filled pore space gradients (WFPSs) to investigate the potential N2O flux pattern and elucidate the underlying mechanism. Our results showed that nutrient distribution and N2O flux pattern differed significantly between two zones, with the highest N2O fluxes in the transition zone sites and lacustrine zone sites were found at 75 % and 95 % WFPS, respectively. Soil nutrient loss in lower elevation areas is influenced by prolonged impoundment durations. The higher N2O fluxes in the lacustrine zone can be attributed to increased nutrient levels resulting from anthropogenic activities. Furthermore, correlation analysis revealed that soil bulk density significantly impacted N2O fluxes across all sites, while NO3-and SOC facilitated N2O emissions in T1-T2 and T4-T5, respectively. It was evident that N2O production primarily contributed to nitrification in the transition zone and was constrained by the mineralization process, whereas denitrification dominated in the lacustrine zone. Notably, the annual N2O efflux from WLFZs accounted for 27 % of that from the water-air interface in HJD Reservoir, indicating a considerably lower contribution than anticipated. Nevertheless, this study highlights the significance of WLFZs as a vital potential source of N2O emission, particularly under the influence of anthropogenic activities and high WFPS gradient.

Nitrate dynamics in the streamwater-groundwater interaction system: Sources, fate, and controls

Nitrate (NO3-) pollution has attracted widespread attention as a threat to human health and aquatic ecosystems; however, elucidating the controlling factors behind nitrate dynamics under the context of changeable hydrological processes, particularly the interactions between streamwater and groundwater (SW-GW), presents significant challenges. A multi-tracer approach, integrating physicochemical and isotopic tracers (Cl-, δ2H-H2O, δ18O-H2O, δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), was employed to identify the response of nitrate dynamics to SW-GW interaction in the Fen River Basin. The streamwater and groundwater NO3- concentrations varied greatly with space and time. Sewage and manure (28 %-73 %), fertilizer (14 %-36 %) and soil organic nitrogen (12 %-28 %) were the main NO3- sources in water bodies. Despite the control of land use type on streamwater nitrate dynamics in losing sections, SW-GW interactions drove NO3- dynamics in both streamwater and groundwater under most circumstances. In gaining streams, streamwater nitrate dynamics were influenced either by groundwater dilution or microbial nitrification, depending on whether groundwater discharge ratios exceeded or fell below 25 %, respectively. In losing streams, groundwater nitrate content increased with streamwater infiltration time, but the influence was mainly limited within 3 km from the river channel. This study provides a scientific basis for the effective management of water nitrate pollution at the watershed scale.

Investigating key drivers of N2O emissions in heterogeneous riparian sediments: Reactive transport modeling and statistical analysis

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas that also contributes to ozone depletion. Recent studies have identified river corridors as significant sources of N2O emissions. Surface water-groundwater (hyporheic) interactions along river corridors induce flow and reactive nitrogen transport through riparian sediments, thereby generating N2O. Despite the prevalence of these processes, the controlling influence of physical and geochemical parameters on N2O emissions from coupled aerobic and anaerobic reactive transport processes in heterogeneous riparian sediments is not yet fully understood. This study presents an integrated framework that combines a flow and multi-component reactive transport model (RTM) with an uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis tool to determine which physical and geochemical parameters have the greatest impact on N2O emissions from riparian sediments. The framework involves the development of thousands of RTMs, followed by global sensitivity and responsive surface analyses. Results indicate that characterizing the denitrification reaction rate constant and permeability of intermediate-permeability sediments (e.g., sandy gravel) are crucial in describing coupled nitrification-denitrification reactions and the magnitude of N2O emissions. This study provides valuable insights into the factors that influence N2O emissions from riparian sediments and can help in developing strategies to control N2O emissions from river corridors.

Cascade damming impacts on microbial mediated nitrogen cycling in rivers

Rivers display essential role in nitrogen (N) cycling in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, but now they are suffering from damming worldwide, especially from cascade damming. Despite of the importance of microorganisms in biogeochemical nutrient cycling, little attention has been paid to microbial functional biogeography under damming disturbances. Here, the Geochip microarray was applied to investigate the microbial mediated N cycling across the single-dammed Yarlung Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River and the cascade-dammed Lancang-Mekong River in southwest China. Our results showed that the N cycling processes (nitrogen fixation, ammonification, denitrification, nitrification and anammox) were stimulated in reservoirs in both rivers and the enhancement was inversely coupled with hydraulic retention time, but the recovery of N-cycling gene abundance in downstream of dam was intervened by cascade damming. Moreover, N-cycling gene composition was significantly altered in the single-dammed river, while no remarkable change was found in the cascade-dammed reaches. However, different from the unvaried gene composition, cascade damming intervened the recovery of N-cycling gene flow connectivity and resulted in the continuous decrease of connectivity in cascade damming reaches. In addition, in the single-dammed river, nutrients were the important drivers for variation in gene abundance, while they did not influence gene composition. Meanwhile, the abundance and composition of N-cycling genes in the cascade-dammed river were both significantly correlated to geographical parameters and water physical characteristics. Therefore, our study has vital implications for anticipating microbial functional response and biogeochemical feedback to ongoing cascade damming, contributing to the protection of river ecosystems under river regulation.

Spatiotemporal variations and dominated environmental parameters of nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations from cascade reservoirs in southwest China

Anthropogenic activity has caused rivers and reservoirs to become sources of nitrous oxide (N2O), which is thought to play an important role in global climate change. There are thermal and DO stratification in deep-water reservoirs with long hydraulic retention time, which change N2O production mechanism compared with shallow-water reservoirs. To promote our understanding of the relationship of N2O production in reservoirs at different depths, spatiotemporal variations in water environmental factors and N2O from cascade reservoirs of Chaishitan (CST), Longtan (LT), Yantan (YT) and Dahua (DH) reservoirs in the Zhujiang River were detected, and the LT and YT reservoirs were compared as representatives of deep-water and shallow-water reservoirs in April and July 2019. The average N2O concentrations in the LT and YT reservoirs were 22.82 ± 2.21 and 21.55 ± 1.65 nmol L-1, respectively. During spring and summer, the WT (water temperature) and DO (dissolved oxygen) concentrations in the YT reservoir were well mixed. In contrast, the LT reservoir, as a deep-water reservoir, had thermal and DO stratifications in both the shallow and middle water, especially in the summer when the solar radiation intensity was high. During summer stratification, the DO concentration in the LT reservoir showed obvious spatial variation, ranging from 1.23 to 9.84 mg L-1, while the DO concentration in the YT reservoir showed very little variation, ranging from 6.45 to 7.09 mg L-1. Structural equation modeling results showed that NH4+ was the main determinant of the N2O concentration in the YT reservoir, and DO was the most influential factor of the N2O concentration in the LT reservoir. These results suggest significant variations in the factors influencing N2O concentration among reservoirs. Additionally, the mechanisms of N2O production differ between deep-water and shallow-water reservoirs. This study highlights the spatio-temporal variations and influential factors contributing to N2O concentration. Furthermore, it discusses the production mechanisms of N2O in different types of reservoirs. These findings contribute to our understanding of N2O distribution in hydropower systems and provide valuable data for the management of hydropower facilities and research on greenhouse gas emissions.

Thin boundary layer model underestimates greenhouse gas diffusion from inland waterways

Inland waters are significant sources of atmospheric greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The thin boundary layer (TBL) model is often employed as a means of estimating GHG diffusion in inland waters based on gas transfer velocity (k) at the air-water interface, with k being subject to regulation by near-surface turbulence that is primarily driven by wind speed in many cases. This wind speed-based estimation of k (wind-k), however, can introduce substantial uncertainty for turbulent waterways where wind speed does not accurately represent overall turbulence. In this study, GHG diffusion in the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal (China), the first and longest man-made canal in the world, was estimated using the TBL model, revealing that this model substantially underestimated GHG diffusion when relying on wind-k. Strikingly, the carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide diffusions were respectively underestimated by 159%, 162%, and 124% when using this model. These findings are significant for developing more reliable approaches to evaluate GHG emissions from inland waterways.

A synthesis of hydroclimatic, ecological, and socioeconomic data for transdisciplinary research in the Mekong

The Mekong River basin (MRB) is a transboundary basin that supports livelihoods of over 70 million inhabitants and diverse terrestrial-aquatic ecosystems. This critical lifeline for people and ecosystems is under transformation due to climatic stressors and human activities (e.g., land use change and dam construction). Thus, there is an urgent need to better understand the changing hydrological and ecological systems in the MRB and develop improved adaptation strategies. This, however, is hampered partly by lack of sufficient, reliable, and accessible observational data across the basin. Here, we fill this long-standing gap for MRB by synthesizing climate, hydrological, ecological, and socioeconomic data from various disparate sources. The data- including groundwater records digitized from the literature-provide crucial insights into surface water systems, groundwater dynamics, land use patterns, and socioeconomic changes. The analyses presented also shed light on uncertainties associated with various datasets and the most appropriate choices. These datasets are expected to advance socio-hydrological research and inform science-based management decisions and policymaking for sustainable food-energy-water, livelihood, and ecological systems in the MRB.

Spatial patterns in water quality and source apportionment in a typical cascade development river southwestern China using PMF modeling and multivariate statistical techniques

River cascade development is one of the human activities that have the most significant impact on the water environment. However, the mechanism of cascade development affecting river hydrochemical components still needs to be further studied. In this study, water quality index(WQI), positive matrix factorization(PMF) model and multivariate statistical techniques were used to identify the mechanism of cascade development affecting river hydrochemical components in an typical cascade development Rivers, Lancang River, China. The results showed that the water quality of Lancang River is relatively good due to less affected by human activity. The spatial variation of river hydrochemistry is affected by the development of cascade reservoirs, and shows three patterns: irregular variation (pH and DO), fluctuating decreasing (Na+, Cl-, SO42- and HCO3-) and multi-peak variation (TN, TDN, NO3--N and NH4+-N). It's worth noting that the concentration of the most hydrochemical parameters is higher in the upper reaches (less human activities) than that in the middle and lower reaches of river due to the retention effect of the reservoir on the chemical composition. The PMF model outputs revealed that the rock weathering and internal source, sewage and soil nitrogen, and chemical fertilizer were primary material sources of Lancang River. Compared with the natural channel zone (41.0%), the interaction of water-rock has more influence on chemical component in the reservoir area (56.3%), while the contribution of fertilizer (11.2%) to the river hydrochemistry is less. The sites of downstream of the reservoir dam were affected by the retention of the reservoir and the disturbance of the bottom drainage, which leads to the weakening of the influence of the sewage (44.7%) on the river material and the increase of the contribution of fertilizer (25.0%). These results could provide valuable information in controlling the eutrophication of cascade reservoirs and the scientific construction of river cascade reservoirs.

NosZI microbial community determined the potential of denitrification and nitrous oxide emission in river sediments of Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Denitrification in river sediments is the hotspot of nitrogen removal and nosZI gene is essential for reducing nitrous oxide (N₂O) emissions. However, few studies tried to link nosZI communities with variations of denitrification rates in sediments along the high-elevation rivers. Here, we investigated the spatial variation of potential denitrification rates of sediments along a section (hereafter YJ) of the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We also used the real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and high-throughput sequencing techniques to evaluate the abundance and composition of nosZI-containing microbial groups. The influences of physicochemical factors and denitrifier communities on potential denitrification rates were further revealed through structural equation modeling. The obtained results indicated that potential denitrification rates and N₂O/(N₂O + N₂) ratio in the sediments along YJ section were greatly different. Moreover, the alpha diversity and composition of nosZI-containing microbial community in river sediments differed remarkably, mainly driven by the ammonia nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N), organic matter (OM) and pH in sediments. The relative abundances of Zoogloeaceae, Oxalobacteraceae, Rhodospirillaceae and Bradyrhizobiaceae significantly differed among five groups (P < 0.05). Structural equation modeling further suggested that nitrogen nutrients directly influenced the potential denitrification rates, while total phosphorus (TP) showed indirect effects on potential denitrification rates through modulating denitrifier abundances and nosZI community. The abundance and composition of nosZI community were powerful predictors in regulating denitrification rates and N₂O/(N₂O + N₂) ratio. Our findings highlight that the nosZI-containing microbial groups play a non-negligible role in nitrogen removal and N₂O mitigation in high-elevation river sediments.

Potentially toxic elements in cascade dams-influenced river originated from Tibetan Plateau

Rivers originated from Tibetan Plateau are of great significance due to their environmental sensibility and fragility. However, the pollution of suspended particulate matter (SPM) in these rivers is rarely reported, in particular, the potentially toxic elements (PTEs) contamination. To clarify the status, sources, behavior, and risks of PTEs in SPM, a full investigation was conducted in dams-influenced Lancangjiang River basin. The findings revealed that the PTEs content (mg kg^-1) ranked Mn (766) > V (151.7) > Zn (131.0) > Cr (94.6) > Ni (44.2) > Pb (36.7) > Cu (29.4) > Co (14.6) > Sb (2.6) > Mo (1.6) > Tl (0.78) > Cd (0.48). The multi-index assessment suggested that Sb and Cd were moderately severe to severe enriched PTEs with the enrichment factor values of 10.0 and 8.8 and the geo-accumulation index values of 2.2 and 2.0, respectively, while the rest of PTEs were minor/no enrichment. In contrast, Cr and Ni were major toxic elements in SPM which contributed 25 ± 10%, 24 ± 8% to the total toxic risk index. The high partition coefficients (e.g., 6.1 for Cr) were observed in most PTEs and resulted in the 96.3% of Cr, 85.2% of Zn, 83.6% of Pb, 77.8% of Ni, and 63.2% of Cu transportation in the SPM form. Natural inputs (e.g., soil erosion) are the main source (53.6%∼61.9%) of V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Tl, while fuel burning contributed 40.9% of Zn, 32.5% of Pb, and 37.3% of Cd. Moreover, 51.2% of Sb was attributed to industrial waste source, while porphyry copper/molybdenum deposits related milltailings were the co-source of Mo (54.4%) and Cu (34.8%). Overall, the PTEs geochemistry of SPM showed the potential in tracing regional environmental change.

Heavy metal characteristics in porewater profiles, their benthic fluxes, and toxicity in cascade reservoirs of the Lancang River, China

The construction of cascade reservoirs on the Lancang River (the upper Mekong) has an important influence on the distribution and accumulation of heavy metals. Heavy metal contents in porewater provide vital information about their bioavailability, studies on this aspect are rare until now. In this study, sediment cores were collected from four adjacent cascade reservoirs in the upper Mekong River to study the distribution, potential sources, diffusive fluxes and toxicity of heavy metals in porewater. The findings indicated that the average contents of Mn, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the sediment porewater were 6442, 644, 11.50, 2.62, 1.23, 3.95, 0.031, and 0.24 µg/L, respectively; these contents varied as the sediment depth increased. Correlation analysis and principal component analysis showed that Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb were mainly associated with anthropogenic sources, As, Mn and Fe were primarily affected by natural inputs, and Ni was affected by a combination of natural and anthropogenic effects. The diffusive fluxes of Mn, Fe, As, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the cascade reservoirs of the Lancang River were 919 - 35,022, 2.12 - 2881, 0.17 - 750, 0.71 - 7.70, 2.30 - 31.18, (-3.35) - 6.40, 0.06 - 0.54, and (-0.52) - 4.08 µg/(m² day), respectively. The results of toxic units suggested that the contamination and toxicity of heavy metals in porewater were not serious. Overall, in the cascade reservoirs, the content and toxicity of heavy metals in porewater of the upstream reservoirs were higher than that of the downstream reservoirs. The operation of the cascade reservoirs enabled greater accumulation of contaminants in sediments of the upstream reservoirs. This research gives strong support for the prevention of heavy metal contamination and the sustainability of water resources under the running condition of cascade reservoirs on such a large international river (the Lancang-Mekong River).

Effects of cascade dam on the distribution of heavy metals and biogenic elements in sediments at the watershed scale, Southwest China

Cascade dam has important effects on the magnitude and dynamics of sediment particles, heavy metals, and biogenic elements in reservoirs. However, systematic studies on the interception effect of cascade dam on the various elements that occur in rivers at the watershed scale are lacking. The aims of this study were to (1) assess the interception effect of a cascade dam on heavy metals and biogenic elements and (2) investigate the key factors of these effects of the cascade dam. Surface sediments were collected from 29 sites distributed in the Wujiang River Basin (WRB, a watershed scale in Southwest China), including from tributaries (7 sites), the main stream (13 sites), and cascade reservoirs (9 sites). In addition, the particle sizes, heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, As, Pb, and Cd), and biogenic elements (TOC, TN, and TP) of sediments were analyzed. Compared with the tributaries, D50 (median particle size) was significantly reduced by 56.8% of cascade reservoirs. The proportion of 63-2,000 μm decreased from 13.78 to 1.34%, indicating that more coarse particles were intercepted in the cascade reservoirs. The contents of heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cu, As, and Cd) declined significantly along the way. On the whole, the contents of TOC, TN, and TP were highest in the midstream and lower in the upstream and downstream. The hydrological condition (reservoir age, HRT, and flow) and the basin area and internal and external inputs of cascade reservoirs are important factors. The findings deepen the current understanding of the mechanisms by which cascade dam affects the river transport of heavy metals and biogenic elements at the watershed scale and provide an important reference for establishing hydropower developments along rivers and developing aquatic environment management strategies.

Varying water column stability controls the denitrification process in a subtropical reservoir, Southwest China

Reservoirs are regarded as hotspots of nitrogen transformation and potential sources of nitrous oxide (N₂O). However, it remains unclear how the hydrological conditions due to dam construction control the processes of nitrogen transformation in reservoir waters. To address this issue, we examined the spatial-temporal characteristics of nitrate concentrations, δ¹⁵N-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-, δ¹⁸O-H₂O, relative water column stability (RWCS), and related environmental factors in a subtropical eutrophic reservoir (Hongfeng Reservoir, HFR), Southwest China. We found that denitrification was the most important nitrogen transformation process in the HFR and that higher denitrification intensity was associated with increased RWCS in summer, which suggested hydrological control of the denitrification process. In contrast, low RWCS conditions favored the nitrification process in the HFR in winter. Additionally, dissolved oxygen (DO; p < 0.05) and nitrate concentrations (p < 0.01) had significant impacts on the denitrification rate. We also found that the spatiotemporal RWCS variations were a prerequisite for regulating DO/nitrate stratification and the coupling/decoupling of nitrification-denitrification at the local and global scales. This study would advances our knowledge of the impacts of RWCS and thermal stratification on nitrogen transformation processes in reservoirs.

Long-term impacts of reservoir operation on the spatiotemporal variation in nitrogen forms in the post-Three Gorges Dam period (2004-2016)

Nitrogen (N) is an essential nutrient limiting life, and its biochemical cycling and distribution in rivers have been markedly affected by river engineering construction and operation. Here, we comprehensively analyzed the spatiotemporal variations and driving environmental factors of N distributions based on the long-term observations (from 2004 to 2016) of seven stations in the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). In the study period, several water quality indexes of the river reach improved, whereas N pollution was severe and tended to be aggravated after the TGR impoundment. The anti-seasonal reservoir operation strongly affected the variations in N forms. The total nitrogen (TN) concentration in the mainstream of the Yangtze River continuously increased, although it was still lower than that in the incoming tributaries (Wu and Jialing rivers). Further analysis showed that this increase occurred probably because of external inputs, including the upstream (76%), non-point (22%), and point source pollution inputs (2%). Additionally, different N forms showed significant seasonal variations; among them, the TN and nitrate nitrogen concentrations were the lowest in the impoundment season (October-February), and the ammonia nitrogen concentrations were the highest in the sluicing season (March-May). Redundancy analysis revealed that the water level and distance to the Three Gorges Dam were significant contributors to N forms distribution. Our findings could provide a basis for managing and predicting the water quality in the Yangtze River.

Seasonal variation of nitrogen biogeochemical processes constrained by nitrate dual isotopes in cascade reservoirs, Southwestern China

The increase of affected river reaches by reservoirs has drastically disturbed the original hydrological conditions, and subsequently influenced the nutrient biogeochemistry in the aquatic system, particularly in the cascade reservoir system. To understand the seasonal variation of nitrogen (N) behaviors in cascade reservoirs, hydrochemistry and nitrate dual isotopes (δ¹⁵N-NO₃^- and δ¹⁸O-NO₃^-) were conducted in a karst watershed (Wujiang River) in southwest China. The results showed that NO₃^--N accounted for almost 90% of the total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) concentration with high average concentration 3.8 ± 0.4 mg/L among four cascade reservoirs. Higher N concentration (4.0 ± 0.8 mg/L) and larger longitudinal variation were observed in summer than in other seasons. The relationship between the variation of NO₃^--N and dual isotopes in the profiles demonstrated that nitrification was dominated transformation, while assimilation contributed significantly in the epilimnion during spring and summer. The high dissolved oxygen concentration in the present cascade reservoirs system prevented the occurrence of N depletion processes in most of the reservoirs. Denitrification occurred in the oldest reservoir during winter with a rate ranging from 18 to 28%. The long-term record of surface water TDN concentration in reservoirs demonstrated an increase from 2.0 to 3.6 mg/L during the past two decades (~ 0.1 mg/L per year). The seasonal nitrate isotopic signature and continuously increased fertilizer application demonstrated that chemical fertilizer contribution significantly influenced NO₃^--N concentration in the karst cascade reservoirs. The research highlighted that the notable N increase in karst cascade reservoirs could influence the aquatic health in the region and further investigations were required.

Do bacterioplankton respond equally to different river regulations? A quantitative study in the single-dammed Yarlung Tsangpo River and the cascade-dammed Lancang River

River damming has raised controversial concerns as it simultaneously contributes to socioeconomic development but may jeopardize aquatic ecology. Since bacterioplankton catalyze vital biogeochemical reactions and play important roles in aquatic ecosystems, more attention has been paid to their responses in dammed rivers. Here, a comparative study was conducted between single-dammed (the Yarlung Tsangpo River) and cascade-dammed (the Lancang River) rivers in Southwest China to investigate whether bacterioplankton respond equally to different river regulations. Our results showed that the decreased bacterioplankton abundance and the increased α-diversity always co-occurred in reservoirs of the Yarlung Tsangpo River and the Lancang River. However, the impact of damming on bacterioplankton abundance and α-diversity were resilient in the Lancang River, which can be attributed to the repeated alterations of environmental heterogeneity in cascade damming reaches. Meanwhile, a generalized additive model (GAM) was applied to identify the important drivers affecting bacterioplankton variation. The abundance was influenced by trophic conditions, such as dissolved silicon, while α-diversity was closely related to the microbial dispersal process, such as elevation and distance-from source. And it is also noted that the bacterioplankton dispersal process was interrupted in cascade damming reaches. In addition, based on their important drivers, variations in abundance and α-diversity were also predicted by GAM. As revealed by the quantitative mutual validation between the two rivers, abundance and α-diversity in the cascade-dammed river can be predicted by their response to single-dammed river, suggesting that the impact of cascade damming on bacterioplankton can be pre-assessed by referring to the single stage damming effect. Therefore, our study provides the first trial of quantitative evidence that bacterioplankton do not respond equally to different river regulations, and the impact of cascade damming on bacterioplankton can be predicted based on single stage damming effect, which can contribute to the protection of aquatic ecology in the cascade hydropower development.
