Locomotion behavior of air bubbles on solid surfaces

Air bubbles are a common occurrence in both natural and industrial settings and are a significant topic in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, and medicine. The physical phenomena of the contact between bubbles and submerged solid surfaces, as well as the locomotion behavior of bubbles, are worth exploring. Bubbles are generated in an unbounded liquid environment and rise due to unbalanced external forces. Bubbles of different diameters follow different ascending paths, after which they approach, touch, collide, bounce, and finally adsorb to the solid surface, forming a stable three-phase contact line (TPCL). The bubbles are in an unstable state due to the unbalanced external forces on the solid surface and the effects generated by the two-phase contact surface, resulting in different locomotion behaviors on the solid surface. Studying the formation, transport, aggregation, and rupture behaviors of bubbles on solid surfaces can enable the controllable operation of bubbles. This, in turn, can effectively reduce the loss of mechanical apparatus in agro-industrial production activities and improve corresponding production efficiency. Recent research has shown that the degree of bubble wetting on a solid surface is a crucial factor in the locomotion behavior of bubbles on that surface. This has led to significant progress in the study of bubble wetting, which has in turn greatly advanced our understanding of bubble behavior. Based on this, exploring the manipulation process of the directional motion of bubbles is a promising research direction. The locomotion behavior of bubbles on solid surfaces can be controlled by changing external conditions, leading to the integration of bubble behavior in various scientific and technological fields. Studying the dynamics of bubbles in liquids with infinite boundaries is worthwhile. Additionally, the manipulation process and mode of these bubbles is a popular research direction.

Unveiling the Rational Development of Stimuli-Responsive Silk Fibroin-Based Ionogel Formulations

We present an approach for the rational development of stimuli-responsive ionogels which can be formulated for precise control of multiple unique ionogel features and fill niche pharmaceutical applications. Ionogels are captivating materials, exhibiting self-healing characteristics, tunable mechanical and structural properties, high thermal stability, and electroconductivity. However, the majority of ionogels developed require complex chemistry, exhibit high viscosity, poor biocompatibility, and low biodegradability. In our work, we overcome these limitations. We employ a facile production process and strategically integrate silk fibroin, the biocompatible ionic liquids (ILs) choline acetate ([Cho][OAc]), choline dihydrogen phosphate ([Cho][DHP]), and choline chloride ([Cho][Cl]), traditional pharmaceutical excipients, and the model antiepileptic drug phenobarbital. In the absence of ILs, we failed to observe gel formation; yet in the presence of ILs, thermoresponsive ionogels formed. Systems were assessed via visual tests, transmission electron microscopy, confocal reflection microscopy, dynamic light scattering, zeta potential and rheology measurements. We formed diverse ionogels of strengths ranging between 18 and 642 Pa. Under 25 °C storage, formulations containing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) showed an ionogel formation period ranging over 14 days, increasing in the order of [Cho][DHP], [Cho][OAc], and [Cho][Cl]. Formulations lacking PVP showed an ionogel formation period ranging over 32 days, increasing in the order of [Cho][OAc], [Cho][DHP] and [Cho][Cl]. By heating from 25 to 60 °C, immediately following preparation, thermoresponsive ionogels formed below 41 °C in the absence of PVP. Based on our experimental results and density functional theory calculations, we attribute ionogel formation to macromolecular crowding and confinement effects, further enhanced upon PVP inclusion. Holistically, applying our rational development strategy enables the production of ionogels of tunable physicochemical and rheological properties, enhanced drug solubility, and structural and energetic stability. We believe our rational development approach will advance the design of biomaterials and smart platforms for diverse drug delivery applications.

On importance of external conditions and properties of the interacting phases in formation and stability of symmetrical and unsymmetrical liquid films

Importance of external conditions and properties of phases creating liquid films, in outcome of the air bubble collisions with liquid/air and liquid/solids interfaces in clean water and in liquid solutions, is critically reviewed. The review is focussed on initial stages of the liquid films formation by bubbles colliding with interfaces, as well as, on analysis of the most important factors responsible for the collision's outcome, that is, either the rapid bubble bouncing or formation of the symmetrical or unsymmetrical liquid films and their thinning to the critical rupture thicknesses. Data on formation of liquid films under dynamic conditions, both in pure liquids and solutions of electrolytes and various surface-active substances, are reviewed and importance of hydrodynamic boundary conditions at interacting interfaces for energy balance in the system is discussed. It is shown that the liquid films stability, which in stagnant systems are directly determined by properties of the liquid/gas and liquid/solid interfaces, can be quite different in dynamic environment. A mechanism of the bubble bouncing from various interfaces in terms of interplay between energy exchange and kinetics of liquid film drainage is analyzed. It is shown that this mechanism is universal and irrelevant on the nature of interacting phases. Moreover, mechanisms responsible for wetting (unsymmetrical) film stability under dynamic conditions are discussed in light of the most recent studies, showing a crucial role of electrolyte, kind and concentration of surface-active substances, electrical surface charge, hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of solids and presence of air entrapped (nano- and/or micro-bubbles) at surfaces of highly hydrophobic solids in the liquid films rupture.

New structural approach to rationalize the foam film stability of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte/surfactant mixtures

The foam film stability of polyelectrolyte/surfactant mixtures is rationalized using structural data from neutron reflectometry for the first time.

Interfacial tension of reactive, liquid interfaces and its consequences

Dispersions of immiscible liquids, such as emulsions and polymer blends, are at the core of many industrial applications which makes the understanding of their properties (morphology, stability, etc.) of great interest. A wide range of these properties depend on interfacial phenomena, whose understanding is therefore of particular importance. The behaviour of interfacial tension in emulsions and polymer blends is well-understood - both theoretically and experimentally - in the case of non-reactive stabilization processes using pre-made surfactants. However, this description of the interfacial tension behaviour in reactive systems, where the stabilizing agents are created in-situ (and which is more efficient as a stabilization route for many systems), does not yet find a consensus among the community. In this review, we compare the different theories which have been developed for non-reactive and for reactive systems, and we discuss their ability to capture the behaviour found experimentally. Finally, we address the consequences of the reactive stabilization process both on the global emulsions or polymer blend morphologies and at the interfacial scale.

Variation of Local Surface Properties of an Air Bubble in Water Caused by Its Interaction with Another Surface

Surface and hydrodynamic forces acting between an air bubble and a flat mica surface in surfactant-free water and in 1 mM KCl solution have been investigated by observing film drainage using a modified surface force apparatus (SFA). The bubble shapes observed with the SFA are compared to theoretical profiles computed from a model that considers hydrodynamic interactions, surface curvature, and disjoining pressure arising from electrical double layer and van der Waals interactions. It is shown that the bubble experiences double-layer forces, and a final equilibrium wetting film between the bubble and mica surfaces is formed by van der Waals repulsion. However, comparison with the theoretical model reveals that the double-layer forces are not simply a function of surface separation. Rather, they appear to be changed by one of more of the following: the bubble's dynamic deformation, its proximity to another surface, and/or hydrodynamic flow in the aqueous film that separate them. The same comments apply to the hydrodynamic mobility or immobility of the air-water interface. Together the results show that the bubble's surface is "soft" in two senses: in addition to its well-known deformability, its local properties are affected by weak external forces, in this case the electrical double-layer interactions with a nearby surface and hydrodynamic flow in the neighboring aqueous phase.

Formation and influence of the dynamic adsorption layer on kinetics of the rising bubble collisions with solution/gas and solution/solid interfaces

BACKGROUND

The DAL (dynamic adsorption layer) formation, that is, the establishment of uneven distribution of adsorption coverage over the rising bubble surface, with significantly diminished coverage at the upstream pole, is the factor of crucial importance for the bubble motion parameters and kinetic of the bubble collisions with various interfaces. The DAL presence can influence the stability of the thin liquid films formed by the colliding bubble at solution/gas and solution solid interfaces.

AIM

The purpose of this paper is to critically review the existing state of art regarding the influence of the DAL formation and existence on the bubble motion parameters as well as kinetics of coalescence at free solution surface and three phase contact (TPC) formation at solid/liquid interfaces of different hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties.

CONCLUSIONS

Despite the fact that up to now there is no direct experimental evidence showing DAL existence, it is documented by experimental data showing clear correlation between bubble local velocity variations and shape pulsations as well as lifetimes of the liquid film formed by the colliding bubble at gas/liquid and gas/solid interfaces.

Electrohydrodynamics near hydrophobic surfaces

We show that an electro-osmotic flow near the slippery hydrophobic surface depends strongly on the mobility of surface charges, which are balanced by counterions of the electrostatic diffuse layer. For a hydrophobic surface with immobile charges, the fluid transport is considerably amplified by the existence of a hydrodynamic slippage. In contrast, near the hydrophobic surface with mobile adsorbed charges, it is also controlled by an additional electric force, which increases the shear stress at the slipping interface. To account for this, we formulate electrohydrodynamic boundary conditions at the slipping interface, which should be applied to quantify electro-osmotic flows instead of hydrodynamic boundary conditions. Our theoretical predictions are fully supported by dissipative particle dynamics simulations with explicit charges. These results lead to a new interpretation of zeta potential of hydrophobic surfaces.

Foam-film-stabilized liquid bridge networks in evaporative lithography and wet granular matter

Evaporative lithography using latex particle templates is a novel approach for the self-assembly of suspension-dispersed nanoparticles into ordered microwire networks. The phenomenon that drives the self-assembly process is the propagation of a network of interconnected liquid bridges between the template particles and the underlying substrate. With the aid of video microscopy, we demonstrate that these liquid bridges are in fact the border zone between the underlying substrate and foam films vertical to the substrate, which are formed during the evaporation of the liquid from the suspension. The stability of the foam films and thus the liquid bridge network stability are due to the presence of a small amount of surfactant in the evaporating solution. We show that the same type of foam-film-stabilized liquid bridge network can also propagate in 3D clusters of spherical particles, which has important implications for the understanding of wet granular matter.

New interferometric technique to evaluate the electric charge of gas bubbles in liquids

We report a new interferometric technique to measure the electric charge at the gas-liquid interface of a bubble in a liquid. The bubble rests by buoyancy against an electrode, and an alternating electric field excites its capillary oscillations. The oscillation amplitude of the quadrupolar mode frequency is measured by the interferometer, and it is used to evaluate the electric charge. The mode frequency scales with the square root of the interfacial tension and with a -(3)/(2) power law as a function of the bubble radius. For bubbles in the millimeter diameter range in pure water, the measured negative charge scales with the square of the radius, hence, giving a constant surface charge density on the order of 1.8 × 10(-5) C m(-2), which is rather consistent with the electrophoretic values reported in the literature.

The model of hydrophobic attraction in the framework of classical DLVO forces

The present article focuses on the analysis of experimental data and interpreting of the influence of water depletion near hydrophobic particles and nanobubbles formed on their surface or in the space between them on van der Waals and electrostatic components of interparticle interaction. It is shown that the difference between simplified and more detailed models of DLVO forces explains the nature and main characteristics of hydrophobic attraction.

Stability of aqueous films between bubbles. Part 1. The effect of speed on bubble coalescence in purified water and simple electrolyte solutions

Film thinning experiments have been conducted with aqueous films between two air phases in a thin film pressure balance. The films are free of added surfactant but simple NaCl electrolyte is added in some experiments. Initially the experiments begin with a comparatively large volume of water in a cylindrical capillary tube a few millimeters in diameter, and by withdrawing water from the center of the tube the two bounding menisci are drawn together at a prescribed rate. This models two air bubbles approaching at a controlled speed. In pure water, the results show three regimes of behavior depending on the approach speed; at slow speed (<1 microm/s) it is possible to form a flat film of pure water, approximately 100 nm thick, that is stabilized indefinitely by disjoining pressure due to repulsive double-layer interactions between naturally charged air/water interfaces. The data are consistent with a surface potential of -57 mV on the bubble surfaces. At intermediate approach speed (approximately 1-150 microm/s), the films are transiently stable due to hydrodynamic drainage effects, and bubble coalescence is delayed by approximately 10-100 s. At approach speeds greater than approximately 150 microm/s, the hydrodynamic resistance appears to become negligible, and the bubbles coalesce without any measurable delay. Explanations for these observations are presented that take into account Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek and Marangoni effects entering through disjoining pressure, surface mobility, and hydrodynamic flow regimes in thin film drainage. In particular, it is argued that the dramatic reduction in hydrodynamic resistance is a transition from viscosity-controlled drainage to inertia-controlled drainage associated with a change from immobile to mobile air/water interfaces on increasing the speed of approach of two bubbles. A simple model is developed that accounts for the boundaries between different film stability or coalescence regimes. Predictions of the model are consistent with the data, and the effects of adding electrolyte can be explained. In particular, addition of electrolyte at high concentration inhibits the near-instantaneous coalescence phenomenon, thereby contributing to increased foam film stability at high approach speeds, as reported in previous literature. This work highlights the significance of bubble approach speed as well as electrolyte concentration in affecting bubble coalescence.

Air at hydrophobic surfaces and kinetics of three phase contact formation

This review focuses on the importance of air presence at hydrophobic solid surfaces for wetting film rupture and kinetics of three phase contact formation. Affinity to air is a typical feature of hydrophobic surfaces, but it has been often either overlooked or not taken into consideration. When the hydrophobic surface, contacted earlier with air, is immersed into water then air can stay attached to the surface. The origin of long range hydrophobic forces and data showing that these interactions were due to the bridging of nanobubbles attached to the hydrophobic surfaces are discussed. A major part of the review is devoted to the description and analysis of data showing that air (nano-, micro-bubbles and/or air film) present at a hydrophobic surface facilitated rupture of the liquid film and three phase contact formation during bubble collisions with flat Teflon plates of different surface roughness. Although all Teflon plates were highly hydrophobic (contact angles ca. 100 degrees -130 degrees ) the time of the three phase contact (TPC) formation and attachment of the colliding bubble was strongly affected by the plate surface roughness. The time of the TPC formation was shortened from over 80 down to 2-3 ms when the roughness was increased from below 1 microm to over 50 microm. Higher surface roughness means that larger amounts of air was entrapped during the Teflon plates' immersion in water. Additional experimental evidence is given, showing that facilitation of the TPC formation and the bubble attachment was due to air presence and re-distribution over the Teflon surfaces: i) prolonging the plate immersion time resulted in quicker attachment; ii) irregular and disappearing air pockets were recorded at a Teflon surface; iii) a satellite bubble left at a Teflon surface during the first collision facilitated the attachment; iv) attachment always occurred during the first collision in the case of a very rough "Teflon V" surface, but in highly concentrated n-octanol and n-heptanol solutions there was bouncing and attachment occurred during the second collision, moreover; v) the degree of bubble kinetic energy transferred into surface energy was significantly smaller during collisions with hydrophobic (Teflon) surfaces than with the hydrophilic ones. The mechanism of air entrapment and redistribution over Teflon plates immersed in water is presented.

Bubble-solid interactions in water and electrolyte solutions

Surface forces between an air bubble and a flat mica surface immersed in aqueous electrolyte solutions have been investigated using a modified surface force apparatus. An analysis of the deformation of the air bubble with respect to the mutual position of the bubble and the mica surface, the capillary pressure, and the disjoining pressure allows the air-liquid surface electrical potential to be determined. The experiments show that a long-range, double-layer repulsion acts between the mica (which is negatively charged) and an air bubble in water and in various electrolyte solutions at low concentration, thereby indicating that the air bubble surface is negatively charged. However, there is clear evidence that charge regulation occurs at the air-water interface to maintain a constant surface potential, and as a result of this, the charge at this interface changes from negative to positive as the bubble approaches the mica surface. Because of the attraction that arises as a result of the charge reversal, a finite force is required to separate the bubble from the mica, though the mica remains wetted by the aqueous phase. At the low concentrations investigated, the potential on the gas-liquid interface is independent of the electrolyte type within experimental uncertainty.

Novel film-calliper method of measuring the contact angle of colloidal particles at liquid interfaces

A simple and reliable film-calliper method of measuring the particle contact angle at the water-air (oil) interface in real time has been developed. Its applicability to submicrometer and micrometer latex and silica particles is demonstrated.

Wetting films in attachment of the colliding bubble

The importance of wetting films in three phase contact formation and attachment of the bubble colliding with different solid surfaces is described The paper reviews main factors determining stability, drainage, rupture, three phase contact (TPC) formation and expansion of the TPC perimeter under dynamic conditions. There are shortly reviewed specific forces of interactions (DLVO and non-DLVO), kinetics of drainage and mechanisms of the wetting film rupture, as well as the TPC formation and expansion. The review is focused on the role of hydrophobic/hydrophilic properties, surface roughness and heterogeneity of the solid substrates for the wetting film stability and rupture under dynamic conditions. Phenomena occurring during collisions of the rising bubble with solid plates of different surface properties are discussed in relation to the kinetics of the wetting films drainage and TPC formation. It is showed that stability and drainage kinetics of the wetting films are decisive for the TPC formation and attachment of the colliding bubble.

Thin wetting films from aqueous solutions of surfactants and phospholipid dispersions

The microscopic thin wetting film method was used to study the stability of wetting films from aqueous solution of surfactants and phospholipid dispersions on a solid surface. In the case of tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C(14)TAB) films the experimental data for the receding contact angle, film lifetime, surface potential at the vapor/solution and solution/silica interface were used to analyze the stability of the studied films. It is shown that with increasing C(14)TAB concentration charge reversal occurs at both (vapor/solution and solution/silica) interfaces, which affects the thin-film stability. The spontaneous rupture of the thin aqueous film was interpreted in terms of the earlier proposed heterocoagulation mechanism. The presence of the mixed cationic/anionic surfactants was found to lower contact angles and suppresses the thin aqueous film rupture, thus inducing longer film lifetime, as compared to the pure amine system. In the case of mixed surfactants hetero-coagulation could arise through the formation of ionic surfactant complexes. The influence of the melting phase-transition temperature T(c) of the dimyristoylphosphatiddylcholine (DMPC) on the stability of thin films from dispersions of DMPC small unilamellar vesicles on a silica surface was studied by measuring the film lifetime and the TPC expansion rate. The stability of thin wetting films formed from dispersions of DMPC small unilamellar vesicles was investigated by the microinterferometric method. The formation of wetting films from diluted dispersions of DMPC multilamellar vesicles was studied in the temperature range 25-32 degrees C. The stability of thin film of lipid vesicles was explained on the basis of hydrophobic interactions. The results obtained show that the stability of wetting films from aqueous solutions of single cationic and mixed cationic-anionic surfactants has electrostatic origin, whereas the stability of the phospholipid film is due to hydrophobic interaction.

Effects of organic ligands, electrostatic and magnetic interactions in formation of colloidal and interfacial inorganic nanostructures

This paper discusses effects of organic ligands, electrostatic and magnetic interactions involved in morphological control of chemically synthesized inorganic nanostructures including colloid and planar systems. The special attention was concentrated on noble metal (gold and palladium) nanoparticles and nanostructures formed at the gas-liquid interface. The analysis of experimental data showed that electrostatic and ligand-related interactions influence very strongly on the metal nanostructure morphology. The hydrophobicity of ligand, charge and binding affinity to inorganic phase are important factors influencing the morphology of inorganic nanostructures formed in a layer at the gas/liquid interface by the interfacial synthesis method. The important point of this method is the quasi two-dimensional character of reaction area and possibilities to realize ultimately thin and anisotropic dynamic monomolecular reaction system with two-dimensional diffusion and interactions of precursors, intermediates and ligands resulting in planar growth and organization of inorganic nanoparticles and nanostructures in the plain of Langmuir monolayer. The morphology of resulting inorganic nanostructures can be controlled efficiently by variations of growth conditions via changes in state and composition of interfacial planar reaction media with the same precursor, and by variations of composition of adjacent bulk phases. The extreme anisotropy and heterogeneity of two-dimensional interfacial reaction system allows creating conditions when growing inorganic particles floating on the aqueous phase surface interact selectively with hydrophobic water-insoluble ligands in interfacial monolayer or with hydrophilic bulk-phase ligands, or at the same time with ligands of different nature present in monolayer and in aqueous phase. The spatial anisotropy of interfacial reaction system and non-homogeneity of ligand binding to inorganic phase gives possibilities for growth of integrated anisotropic nanostructures with unique morphologies, in particularly those characterized by very high surface/volume ratio, high effective perimeter, and labyrinth-like structure. In a case of magnetic nanoparticles dispersed in colloids specific magnetic dipolar interactions can result in formation of chains, rings and more complex nanoparticulate structures or separated highly anisotropic nanoparticles. Theoretical considerations indicate to the importance of system dimensionality in relation to the energy balance which determines specific features of structure organization in planar charged metallic and magnetic nanostructures. For example, a requirement of Coulomb energy minimum, the possibility of free electron redistribution and strengthened attractive interactions between particles in metallic nanostructures can explain formation of very branchy systems with extremely high "effective perimeter". The obtained experimental and literature data show that system dimensionality, organic ligand nature along with electrostatic and magnetic interactions are most important factors of morphological control of chemically synthesized inorganic nanomaterials. The understanding and appropriate exploitation of these factors can be useful for further developments of efficient nanofabrication techniques based on colloidal and interfacial synthetic methods.

Thinning of wetting films formed from aqueous solutions of non-ionic surfactant

We investigated the thinning of wetting films formed from aqueous solution of non-ionic triblock copolymer Pluronic F127 on the surface of silica using a home-made thin film balance and time-resolved ellipsometry. Imaging ellipsometry was used to visualize the film structures at subsequent stages of their development. The results unambiguously show that the time required for the formation of steady films strongly depends on the electrolyte concentration. When increasing the latter from 10(-4) to 0.1 M, this time typically increases with several orders of magnitude, from a few minutes to several hours. Moreover, for sufficiently large amounts of salt, two characteristic relaxation regimes can be clearly identified. After initial quick thinning, further thinning slows down enormously. These typical kinetic regimes are thought to result from the coupled dependencies of the bulk and interfacial properties of F127 on salt concentration. Possible explanations of the phenomenon are discussed.

A disjoining pressure study of foam films stabilized by tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide C14TAB

In the present study disjoining pressure thickness curves (- curves) of the cationic surfactant tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) were measured as a function of the surfactant concentration and of the electrolyte concentration. The former measurements were used to determine the dissociation degree of CTAB in a confined geometry, in a thin common black film (CBF). The latter measurements allowed us to determine the electrolyte concentration at which a Newton black film (NBF) is formed and to study the influence the foam film type (CBF or NBF) has on the stability of the respective foam. Last but not least, CBFs were studied in a temperature gradient and it was found that water diffuses from cold to hot regions which can be explained with a negative Soret coefficient of HO. All of these examples demonstrate that - curves provide much more information about foam films than simply the interaction forces.
