Abstract
Thermal processing is used to produce most commercial pet foods and treats to improve safety, shelf life, nutritional characteristics, texture, and nutrient digestibility. However, heat treatments can degrade protein quality by damaging essential amino acids, as well as contribute to the Maillard reaction. The Maillard reaction forms melanoidins that favorably improve food qualities (e.g., color, flavor, aroma), but also form Maillard reaction products (MRP) and advanced glycation end-products that may negatively affect health. Because commercial pet diets are frequently fed to domestic cats and dogs throughout their lifetimes, it is critical to quantify MRP concentrations and understand the variables that influence their formation so future diets may be formulated with that in mind. Because few research studies on MRP in pet diets have been conducted, the goals of this study were to measure the MRP in commercial pet foods and treats, estimate pet MRP intake, and correlate MRP with dietary macronutrient concentrations. Fifty-three dry and wet dog foods, dog treats, and cat foods were analyzed for dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, acid-hydrolyzed fat, total dietary fiber, and gross energy using standard techniques. MRP were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data were analyzed using the Mixed Models procedure of SAS 9.4. Dry foods had lower reactive lysine concentrations and reactive lysine: total lysine ratios (indicator of damage) than wet foods. Wet foods had more fructoselysine (FRUC) than dry foods; however, dry dog treats contained more FRUC than wet dog treats. The greatest 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (HMF) concentrations were measured in dry and wet dog foods, whereas the lowest HMF concentrations were measured in dry and wet cat foods. Based on dietary concentrations and estimated food intakes, dogs and cats fed wet foods are more likely to consume higher carboxymethyllysine and FRUC concentrations than those fed dry foods. However, dogs fed wet foods are more likely to consume higher HMF concentrations than those fed dry foods. In cats, those fed dry foods would consume higher HMF concentrations than those fed wet foods. We demonstrated that pet foods and treats contain highly variable MRP concentrations and depend on diet/treat type. In general, higher MRP concentrations were measured in wet pet foods and dry treats. While these findings are valuable, in vivo testing is needed to determine if and how MRP consumption affect pet health.

Abstract
This study investigated the modulatory effects of lotus seedpod oligomeric procyanidins (LSOPC) on the advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs)-induced liver injury via advanced glycation end-product receptors (RAGE)-mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK)-nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways in a mice model. To examine the antioxidation properties of LSOPC, a model of high-AGEs-diet were established using Sprague Dawley (SD) male mice fed with a normal AIN-93G diet, a high AGEs diet (H), or H plus 0.5 or 0.2% (w/w) LSOPC for 12 weeks. Our results showed that LSOPC inhibited the AGEs formation and alleviated AGEs-induced liver injury by suppressing the nuclear translocation of NF-κB and activation of the MAPK signaling pathway. Additionally, LSOPC inhibited the genes expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin 6 (IL-6). Taken together, LSOPC treatment potentially inhibited the AGEs formation and modulated liver injury with long-term dietary AGEs by suppressing RAGE-MAPK-NF-κB pathways.

Abstract
The interest and demand for healthy and less processed foods for human consumption have been mirrored in the pet industry, with an explosion of alternative diets available. Several nontraditional feeding methodologies including raw meat-based diets (RMBDs) are believed by many dog owners to be superior to traditional extruded commercial dog foods. Despite the strong opinions, limited data are available comparing objective health measures among healthy dogs fed using different methods of diet preparation. Therefore, we compared health markers in client-owned dogs fed an RMBD to markers in dogs fed a high-quality extruded kibble. We hypothesized that healthy adult dogs fed RMBD would show differences in biochemical and hematological parameters and improved clinical health scores (e.g., dental, external ear canal, and integument scores) compared with dogs fed a kibble diet. A cross-sectional observational study was performed comparing hematology, serum biochemistry, urinalysis management history, and clinical health scores in healthy client-owned dogs reported as fed RMBD (n = 28) or kibble (n = 27) for >1 yr. Dental, external ear canal, and integument health scores were assigned by a single veterinary evaluator blinded to feed group, using a scale where 0 was normal and 3 was most severely affected. Spearman correlation coefficient (rs) was calculated to assess the strength and direction of the relationship of biochemical outcomes with age and body condition score (BCS), while analysis of variance was used to determine if biochemical analytes differed by breed or gender. Biochemical data were analyzed using multiple linear regression models, adjusting for the covariates gender, breed, age, and BCS. A composite clinical health score, (CCS) = 9 - (dental score + otitis score + integument score), was compared between feeding groups using Mann-Whitney test. Serum alkaline phosphatase activity (P < 0.001) and globulin concentration (P < 0.001) were lower, while lymphocyte count (P < 0.05) was higher in dogs fed RMBD. No differences were found in urinalysis between diet groups. Dogs fed RMBD showed a slight improvement in CCS compared with kibble-fed dogs (CCS: P = 0.03). Owner management significantly differed with a greater likelihood of management interventions including dietary supplements and sporting activities in the RMBD group. Further work is needed to specifically determine the impact of diet processing and nutrient content on canine health.

Abstract
The present study was conducted with privately owned dogs and cats to investigate whether a relationship exists between the dietary AGEs and the urinary excretion of AGEs, as indication of possible effective absorption of those compounds in the intestinal tract of pet carnivores. For this purpose, data were collected from both raw fed and dry processed food (DPF) fed to dogs and cats, through spot urine sampling and questionnaires. Raw pet food (RF, low in AGE diets) was fed as a primary food source to 29 dogs and DPF to 28 dogs. Cats were categorized into 3 groups, which were RF (n = 15), DPF (n = 14) and dry and wet processed pet food (DWF, n = 25). Urinary‐free carboxymethyllysine (CML), carboxyethyllysine (CEL) and lysinoalanine (LAL) were analysed using ultrahigh‐performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC)—mass spectrometry, and were standardized for variable urine concentration by expressing the AGE concentrations as a ratio to urine creatinine (Ucr) concentration (µg/µmol Ucr). Urinary excretion of CML, CEL and LAL in dogs fed with DPF was 2.03, 2.14 and 3 times higher compared to dogs fed with RF (p < .005). Similar to the dogs, a significant difference in CML:Ucr, CEL:Ucr and LAL:Ucr between the three diet groups was observed in cats (p‐overall < 0.005, ANOVA), in which the RF fed group excreted less AGEs than the other groups. Linear regression coefficients and SE of CML:Ucr, CEL:Ucr and LAL:Ucr showed that body weight and neuter status were significantly correlated with CML and CEL excretion, but not to LAL excretion. Our results revealed a significant correlation between dietary AGEs and urinary excretion of free CML, CEL and LAL, and also showed that endogenous formation of these AGEs occurs in both dogs and cats under physiological conditions.

Abstract
The prevalence of cytoprotective mechanisms induced by polyphenols such as activation of intracellular antioxidant responses (ICM) and direct free radical scavenging was investigated in native Chilean species of strawberries, raspberries, and currants. Human gastric epithelial cells were co- and preincubated with polyphenolic-enriched extracts (PEEs) from Chilean raspberries (Rubus geoides), strawberries (Fragaria chiloensis ssp. chiloensis f. chiloensis), and currants (Ribes magellanicum) and challenged with peroxyl and hydroxyl radicals. Cellular protection was determined in terms of cell viability, glyoxalase I and glutathione s-transferases activities, and carboxymethyl lysine (CML) and malondialdehyde levels. Our results indicate that cytoprotection induced by ICM was the prevalent mechanism for Rubus geoides and F. chiloensis. This agreed with increased levels of glyoxalase I and glutathione S-transferase activities in cells preincubated with PEEs. ORAC index indicated that F. chiloensis was the most efficient peroxyl radical scavenger. Moreover, ICM mediated by F. chiloensis was effective in protecting cells from CML accumulation in contrast to the protective effects induced by free radical scavenging. Our results indicate that although both polyphenol-mediated mechanisms can exert protective effects, ICM was the most prevalent in AGS cells. These results suggest a potential use of these native berries as functional food.

Abstract
There is a growing scientific agreement that the cellular redox regulators such as antioxidants, particularly the natural polyphenolic forms, may help lower the incidence of some pathologies, including metabolic diseases like diabetes and diabesity, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative abnormalities, and certain cancers or even have anti-aging properties. The recent researches indicate that the degree of metabolic modulation and adaptation response of cells to reductants as well as oxidants establish their survival and homeostasis, which is linked with very critical balance in imbalances in cellular redox capacity and signaling, and that might be an answer the questions why some antioxidants or phytochemicals potentially could do more harm than good, or why some proteins lose their function by increase interactions with glyco- and lipo-oxidation mediates in the cells (carbonyl stress). Nonetheless, pursue of healthy aging has led the use of antioxidants as a means to disrupt age-associated physiological dysfunctions, dysregulated metabolic processes or prevention of many age-related diseases. Although it is still early to define their exact clinical benefits for treating age-related disease, a diet rich in polyphenolic or other forms of antioxidants does seem to offer hope in delaying the onset of age-related disorders. It is now clear that any deficiency in antioxidant vitamins, inadequate enzymatic antioxidant defenses can distinctive for many age-related disease, and protein carbonylation can used as an indicator of oxidative stress associated diseases and aging status. This review examines antioxidant compounds and plant polyphenols as redox regulators in health, disease and aging processes with hope that a better understanding of the many mechanisms involved with these distinct compounds, which may lead to better health and novel treatment approaches for age-related diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Proteins in human tissues and body fluids continually undergo spontaneous oxidation and glycation reactions forming low levels of oxidation and glycation adduct residues. Proteolysis of oxidised and glycated proteins releases oxidised and glycated amino acids which, if they cannot be repaired, are excreted in urine. SCOPE OF REVIEW In this review we give a brief background to the classification, formation and processing of oxidised and glycated proteins in the clinical setting. We then describe the application of stable isotopic dilution analysis liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for measurement of oxidative and glycation damage to proteins in clinical studies, sources of error in pre-analytic processing, corroboration with other techniques - including how this may be improved - and a systems approach to protein damage analysis for improved surety of analyte estimations. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS Stable isotopic dilution analysis LC-MS/MS provides a robust reference method for measurement of protein oxidation and glycation adducts. Optimised pre-analytic processing of samples and LC-MS/MS analysis procedures are required to achieve this. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE Quantitative measurement of protein oxidation and glycation adducts provides information on level of exposure to potentially damaging protein modifications, protein inactivation in ageing and disease, metabolic control, protein turnover, renal function and other aspects of body function. Reliable and clinically assessable analysis is required for translation of measurement to clinical diagnostic use. Stable isotopic dilution analysis LC-MS/MS provides a "gold standard" approach and reference methodology to which other higher throughput methods such as immunoassay and indirect methods are preferably corroborated by researchers and those commercialising diagnostic kits and reagents. Abstract
Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are the final products of the non-enzymatic reaction between reducing sugars and amino groups in proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Recently, the accumulation of AGEs in vivo has been implicated as a major pathogenic process in diabetic complications, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and normal aging. The early recognition of AGEs can ascend to the late 1960s when a non-enzymatic glycation process was found in human body which is similar to the Maillard reaction. To some extent, AGEs can be regarded as products of the Maillard reaction. This review firstly introduces the Maillard reaction, the formation process of AGEs and harmful effects of AGEs to human health. As AGEs can cause undesirable diseases or disorders, it is necessary to investigate AGE inhibitors to offer a potential therapeutic approach for the prevention of diabetic or other pathogenic complications induced by AGEs. Typical effective AGE inhibitors with different inhibition mechanisms are also reviewed in this paper. Both synthetic compounds and natural products have been evaluated as inhibitors against the formation of AGEs. However, considering toxic or side effects of synthetic molecules present in clinical trials, natural products are more promising to be developed as potent AGE inhibitors.

Abstract
Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) are a group of complex and heterogeneous compounds formed from nonenzymatic reactions. The accumulation of AGEs in vivo has been implicated as a major pathogenic process in diabetic complications and other health disorders, such as atherosclerosis and Alzheimer's disease, and normal aging. In this study, we investigate the inhibitory effects of cinnamon bark proanthocyanidins, catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B2 on the formation of specific AGE representatives including pentosidine, N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), and methylglyoxal (MGO) derived AGEs. These compounds displayed obvious inhibitory effects on these specific AGEs, which are largely attributed to both their antioxidant activities and carbonyl scavenging capacities. Meanwhile, in terms of their potent MGO scavenging capacities, effects of these proanthocyanidins on insulin signaling pathways interfered by MGO were evaluated in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. According to the results, proanthocyanidins exerted protective effects on glucose consumption impaired by MGO in 3T3-L1 fat cells.

Abstract
In comparison to the general population, individuals with diabetes suffer a 3- to 4-fold increased risk for developing complications of atherosclerosis and vascular insufficiency. This fact should be taken into account to develop a suitable determinant for the early detection of these complications and subsequently reduce the adverse effect of type 2 diabetes. In vitro experiments have shown that the products of glucose auto-oxidation and Amadori adducts are both potential sources of N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML). Excessive formation of CML on low density lipoprotein (LDL) has been proposed to be an important mechanism for the dyslipidemia and accelerated atherogenesis observed in patients with type 2 diabetes. It has been postulated that the uptake of CML-LDL by LDL receptors is impaired, thereby decreasing its clearance from the blood circulation. Alternatively, the uptake of these modified LDL particles by scavenger receptors on macrophages and vascular smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and by AGE receptors on endothelial cells, SMCs, and monocytes is highly enhanced and this, in turn, is centrally positioned to contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic vascular complications especially coronary artery disease. The present review summarizes the up-to-date information on effects and mechanism of type 2 diabetes-associated coronary atherosclerosis induced by CML-LDL modification.

Abstract
A new liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) approach, based on the precursor ion scanning technique using a triple-stage quadrupole, has been developed to detect free and protein-bound histidine (His) residues modified by reactive carbonyl species (RCS) generated by lipid peroxidation. This approach has been applied to urines from Zucker obese rats, a nondiabetic animal model characterized by obesity and hyperlipidemia, where RCS formation plays a key role in the development of renal and cardiac dysfunction. The immonium ion of His at m/z 110 was used as a specific product ion of His-containing peptides to generate precursor ion spectra, followed by MS2 acquisitions of each precursor ion of interest for structural characterization. By this approach, three novel adducts, which are excreted in free form only, have been identified, two of them originating from the conjugation of 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal (HNE) to His, followed by reduction/oxidation of the aldehyde: His-1,4-dihydroxynonane (His-DHN), His-4-hydroxynonanoic acid (His-HNA), and carnosine-HNE, this last recognized in previous in vitro studies as a new potential biomarker of carbonyl stress. No free His-HNE was found in urines, which was detected only in protein hydrolysates. The same LC-MS/MS method, working in multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode, has been developed, validated, and applied to quantitatively profile in Zucker urines both conventional (1,4-dihydroxynonane mercapturic acid, DHN-MA) and the newly identified adducts, except His-HNA. The analytes were separated on a C12 reversed-phase column by gradient elution from 100% A (water containing 5 mM nonafluoropentanoic acid) to 80% B (acetonitrile) in 24 min at a flow rate of 0.2 mL/min and analyzed for quantification in MRM mode by applying the following precursor-to-product ion transitions m/z 322.2 --> 164.1 + 130.1 (DHN-MA), m/z 314.7 --> 268.2 + 110.1 (His-DHN), m/z 312.2 --> 110.1 + 156.0 (His-HNE), m/z 383.1 --> 266.2 + 110.1 (CAR-HNE), m/z 319.2 --> 301.6 + 156.5 (H-Tyr-His-OH, internal standard). Precision and accuracy data, as well as the lower limits of quantification in urine, were highly satisfactory (from 0.01 nmol/mL for CAR-HNE, His-DHN, His-HNE, to 0.075 nmol/mL for DHN-MA). The method, applied to evaluate for the first time the advanced lipoxidation end products profile in urine from obese Zucker rats, an animal model for the metabolic syndrome, has proved to be suitable and sensitive enough for testing in vivo the carbonyl quenching ability of newly developed RCS sequestering agents.

Abstract
This study aims to determine the levels of N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) in patients with Type 2 diabetic patients with and without ischemic heart disease (IHD) and to find for a possible association between circulating CML and a number of clinical parameters including lipids, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in Type 2 diabetic IHD patients. Serum CML levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay using polyclonal anti-CML antibodies. Serum levels of CML and MDA were assessed in 60 IHD patients with Type 2 diabetes, 43 IHD patients without Type 2 diabetes, 64 Type 2 diabetics without IHD, and 80 sex- and age-matched healthy subjects. Correlations studies between CML levels and lipids, HbA1c, and lipid peroxidation were performed in Type 2 diabetes patients with and without IHD. A statistical significance was observed in the levels of serum glucose, lipids (triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol), MDA, HbA1c, CML and LDL-cholesterol (p<0.05) between the groups of the study. CML levels were significantly increased in diabetic IHD patients compared with Type 2 diabetes patients but without IHD (537.1 +/- 86.1 vs 449.7 +/- 54.9, p<0.001). A positive correlation was observed between serum levels of CML and MDA, r = 0.338 (p = 0.008) in Type 2 diabetes patients with IHD. However, age, HbA1c and lipids had no significant influence on CML levels among diabetics (p>0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrates the effect of both diabetes and oxidative stress on the higher levels of circulating CML. These results showed that increased serum levels of CML are associated with the development of IHD in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Damage to cellular components by reactive oxygen species is believed to be an important factor contributing to the aging process. Likewise, the progressive failure of maintenance and repair is believed to be a major cause of biological aging. Cellular aging is characterized by the accumulation of oxidatively modified proteins, a process that results, at least in part, from impaired protein turnover. Indeed, oxidized protein buildup with age may be due to increased protein damage, decreased elimination of oxidized protein (i.e., repair and degradation), or a combination of both mechanisms. Since the proteasome has been implicated in both general protein turnover and the removal of oxidized protein, the fate of the proteasome during aging has recently received considerable attention, and evidence has been provided for impaired proteasome function with age in different cellular systems. The present review will mainly address age-related changes in proteasome structure and function in relation to the impact of oxidative stress on the proteasome and the accumulation of oxidized protein. Knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in the decline of proteasome function during aging and in oxidative stress is expected to provide new insight that will be useful in defining antiaging strategies aimed at preserving this critical function.

Abstract
Glycation is common posttranslational modification of proteins impairing their function, which occurs during diabetes mellitus and aging. Beside extracellular glycation of long-lived proteins, intracellular modifications of short-lived proteins by more reactive sugars like fructose are possible. The process includes free oxygen radicals (glycoxidation). In an attempt to reduce glycoxidation and formation of advanced glycation products (AGE), influence of 0.2-1.2 mM uric acid as endogenous antioxidant on glycoxidation of purified pig heart aspartate aminotransferase (AST) by 50 mM and 500 mM D-fructose in vitro was studied. Uric acid at 1.2 mM concentration reduced AST activity decrease and formation of total AGE products caused by incubation in vitro of the enzyme with sugar up to 25 days at 37 degrees C. The results thus support the hypothesis that uric acid has beneficial effects in controlling protein glycoxidation. The in vitro system AST-fructose proved to be a useful tool for investigation of glycation process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) contribute to diabetic and atherosclerotic end-organ damage, but the mechanisms of AGE-formation and AGE-induced damage are unclear. Glycolaldehyde (GA) is a Maillard-reaction intermediate and can be formed by reaction of L-serine with the myeloperoxidase-system. GA reacts with proteins to form AGEs, such as GA-pyridine, which is specific for protein modification by GA. GA-pyridine accumulates in human atherosclerotic lesions. As atherosclerosis and progressive glomerulosclerosis share many similarities, we hypothesized that GA-pyridine accumulates in renal diseases, especially those with prominent mesangial involvement. METHODS Paraffin-embedded renal biopsies from 55 patients with various renal diseases, as well as control tissue, obtained from the unaffected part of kidneys from 10 patients with renal cell carcinoma were immunohistochemically stained with a monoclonal antibody directed against GA-pyridine and were scored semiquantitatively. Additional sections were scored for mesangial matrix expansion (MME) and focal glomerular sclerosis (FGS). RESULTS In normal human kidneys, GA-pyridine was mainly localized in tubular epithelial cells, but not in the glomerular mesangium. Significant mesangial GA-pyridine accumulation was found in disorders with mesangial involvement as a common denominator. In contrast, mesangial GA-pyridine accumulation was less prominent in renal diseases without prominent mesangial involvement. Moreover, mesangial GA-pyridine accumulation was more pronounced in kidneys with higher MME and FGS scores across the different diagnoses. CONCLUSION GA-pyridine accumulates in the mesangium in human renal disease, in particular in disorders with mesangial involvement. Further studies should elucidate whether mesangial GA-pyridine plays a role in the progression of glomerular damage.

Abstract
Premature ageing, one of the characteristics of Down syndrome (DS), may involve oxidative stress and impairment of proteasome activity. Transgenic mice overexpressing the human copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1) gene are one of the first murine models for DS and it has been shown that SOD1 overexpression might be either deleterious or beneficial. Here, we show a reduction in proteasome activities in the cortex of SOD1 transgenic mice and an associated increase in the content of oxidized SOD1 protein. As we demonstrate that in vitro oxidized SOD can inhibit purified proteasome peptidase activities, modified SOD1 might be partially responsible for proteasome inhibition shown in SOD1 transgenic mice.

Abstract
Non-enzymatic glycoxydation and lipoxidation of proteins continues to stimulate great interest in gerontology as both markers and promoters of aging. The first aim of the study was to determine the age-related changes in levels of Nepsilon-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE) present on proteins of the cardiovascular system of Fischer 344 rats and identify the particular polypeptides being modified. The second objective was to evaluate whether pharmacological administration of aminoguanidine (1g/L in the drinking water) could reverse protein glycoxidation and lipoxidation. CML content in serum, aorta, and heart proteins from 28-month-old rats was double of that found in 4-month-old animals. AG administration to old rats for 3 months from the age of 25 months lowered CML content by 15 (P=.2275), 44 (P<.0001), and 28% (P=.0072) in serum, aorta, and heart, respectively. Serum albumin, transferrin and immunoglobulins were most prominently adducted by both CML and HNE. While the extent of albumin and transferrin modification was comparable between age groups, CML and HNE bound to immunoglobulins increased in the sera of old rats as a result of the accumulation of immunoglobulin heavy and light chains. AG treatment prevented immunoglobulin accumulation in serum, suggesting a beneficial action on renal filtration. Lipoxidation of heart mitochondrial proteins was prevalent over glycoxidation, either as CML or pentosidine. Although AG prevented HNE-induced inactivation of the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex in vitro, it had no effect in rat hearts, suggesting AG could not reach the mitochondrial matrix.

Abstract
We propose a specific, reproducible and sensitive HPLC method for the determination of N(epsilon)-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) excreted in urine. Total CML was measured in acid hydrolysates of urine samples, while free CML was measured in acetonitrile-deproteinised urine samples using a RP-HPLC method with ortho-phtaldialdehyde (OPA)-derivatisation and fluorescence detection suited for automation. We compared the CML excretion of 51 non-proteinuric patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) (age 57+/-14 years, HbA1c 8.0+/-1.8%) to 42 non-diabetic controls (C) (age 45+/-17 years). The urinary excretion of total CML in diabetic patients was increased by approximately 30% (DM: 0.58+/-0.21; C: 0.45+/-0.14 microM/mmol creatinine; P<0.001). While urinary excretion of free CML was not significantly different, excretion of bound CML was increased (DM: 0.36+/-0.17; C: 0.27+/-0.14; P<0.05) in diabetic patients. CML excretion was correlated with protein and albumin excretion, but did not correlate with HbA1c, duration of DM or diabetic complications such as neuropathy or retinopathy. Furthermore, no age-dependent change of total CML excretion was found, while free CML excretion was lower in younger subjects.
