Abstract
The experimental identification of NgBeO molecules, followed by the recent theoretical exploration of super-strong NgBO+ (Ng = He-Rn) ions motivated us to investigate the stability of iso-electronic NgBNH+ (Ng = He-Rn) ions using various ab initio-based quantum chemical methods. The hydrogen-like chemical behavior of gold in small clusters and molecules also inspired us to study the nature of the bonding interactions in NgBNAu+ ions compared to that in NgBNH+ ions. The calculated Ng-B bond lengths in the predicted ions have been found to be much lower than the corresponding covalent limits, indicating a covalent Ng-B interaction in both the NgBNH+ and NgBNAu+ ions. In addition, the Ng-B bond dissociation energies are found to be in the range of 136.7-422.8 kJ mol-1 for NgBNH+ and 77.4-319.1 kJ mol-1 for NgBNAu+, implying the stable nature of the predicted ions. Interestingly, the Ng-B bond length (except for Ne) is the lowest reported to date together with the highest He-B and Ne-B binding energies considering all the neutral and cationic complexes containing Ng-B bonding motifs. Moreover, the natural bonding orbital (NBO) and electron density-based atoms-in-molecule (AIM) analysis reveal the covalent nature of the Ng-B bond in the predicted ions. Furthermore, the energy decomposition analysis together with the natural bond orbital in the chemical valence (EDA-NOCV) studies indicate that the orbital interaction energy is the main contributor to the total attraction energy in the Ng-B bonds. All the calculated results indicate the hydrogen-like chemical behavior of gold in the predicted NgBNM+ ions, showing further evidence of the concept of "gold-hydrogen analogy". Also, for comparison, the corresponding Cu and Ag analogs are investigated. All the computed results together with the experimental identification of the NgMX (Ng = Ar-Xe; M = Cu, Ag, Au; X = F, Cl), ArOH+, and NgBeO (Ng = Ar-Xe) systems clearly indicate that it may be possible to prepare and characterize the predicted NgBNM+ ions experimentally using suitable technique(s).

Abstract
A comprehensive analysis of the intermolecular interaction energy and anharmonic vibrations of 41 structures of the HXeY⋯HX (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I) family of noble-gas-compound complexes for all possible combinations of Y and X was conducted. New structures were identified, and their interaction energies were studied by means of symmetry-adapted perturbation theory, up to second-order corrections: this provided insight into the physical nature of the interaction in the complexes. The energy components were discussed, in connection to anharmonic frequency analysis. The results show that the induction and dispersion corrections were the main driving forces of the interaction, and that their relative contributions correlated with the complexation effects seen in the vibrational stretching modes of Xe-H and H-X. Reasonably clear patterns of interaction were found for different structures. Our findings corroborate previous findings with better methods, and provide new data. These results suggest that the entire group of the studied complexes can be labelled as "naturally blueshifting", except for the complexes with HI.

Abstract
This is the story of a career in theoretical chemistry during a time of dramatic changes in the field due to phenomenal growth in the availability of computational power. It is likewise the story of the highly gifted graduate students and postdoctoral fellows that I was fortunate to mentor throughout my career. It includes reminiscences of the great mentors that I had and of the exciting collaborations with both experimentalists and theorists on which I built much of my research. This is an account of the developments of exciting scientific disciplines in which I was involved: vibrational spectroscopy, molecular reaction mechanisms and dynamics, e.g., in atmospheric chemistry, and the prediction of new, exotic molecules, in particular noble gas molecules. From my very first project to my current work, my career in science has brought me the excitement and fascination of research. What a wonderful pursuit!

Abstract
A series of complexes (HNgMX3), formed from superhalogen MX3 (M = Be-Ca, X = F-Br) noble gas (Ar-Rn) and the hydrogen atom, were investigated via combined high-level ab initio and DFT calculations. The high vertical electron detachment energy (VDE) of the superhalogen part will lead to charge transfer from the noble gas hydride to it. This charge transfer gives rise to attractive ionic interaction between the two components and to the existence of these complexes as local minima on the potential energy surface eventually. However, the VDE value of the superhalogen part is not always monotonically correlated with the thermodynamic/kinetic stability of the whole complexes. Therefore the superhalogen itself might not be enough to provide information for the correct prediction of the properties of the whole composites. Although there are exothermic channels of dissociation, the existence of energy barrier might ensure the existence of these Ng hydrides under certain conditions. Our analysis indicates the existence of two important factors, functioning in opposite directions, for the energy barriers along the exothermic channel. To achieve a high energy barrier, the attractive interaction between superhalogen and the H atom in the TS, which lowers the barrier, needs to be suppressed effectively. An understanding of the superhalogen-based composites will provide valuable information on the functional properties and potential application of superhalogens. The details of the interaction between different parts of these composites should be one of the areas of focus in these studies.

Abstract
A series of 20 composite structures, consisting of superhalogen and noble gas (Ng) hydrides, was explored via high-level coupled-cluster single, double and perturbative triple excitations calculations in this work. The existence of these composites, as local minima on the potential energy surface, arises from the charge transfer from the Ng hydride part to the superhalogen moiety. Clearly, this transfer could lead to stabilizing the interaction of the ionic type between the two components. The driving force of the charge transfer should be the high vertical electron detachment energy (VDE) of the superhalogen part leading to its enough capability of extracting the electron from the Ng hydride moiety. However, except triggering the ionic attractive interaction, there is nomonotonic correlation between the VDE value and the thermodynamic stability of the whole composite. This counter-intuitive result actually originates from the fact that, irrespective of various superhalogens, only two of their F ligands interact with the Ng atoms directly. Thus, although leading to higher VDE values, the increase in the number of electronegative ligands of the superhalogen moiety does not affect the stabilizing interaction of the composites here directly. In other words, with the necessary charge transfer generated, further increase of the VDE does not ensure the improvement of the thermodynamic stabilities of the whole composite. Moreover, in the transition state of the exothermic dissociation channel, more F atoms will give rise to higher probability of additional attractions between the F and H atoms which should lower the energy barrier. That is to say, increasing VDE, i.e., having more F atoms in many cases, will probably reduce the kinetic stability. Knowing the inevitable existence of the exothermic channel, kinetic stability is crucial to the ultimate goal of experimental observation of these Ng hydrides. Thus, in some cases, only the superhalogen itself may not provide enough information for the correct prediction on the properties of the whole composites. The understanding of the superhalogen-based composites will provide valuable information on the functional properties as well as the application potential of superhalogen clusters. Thus, the corresponding researches should focus on not only the superhalogen itself but also other related aspects, especially the details of the interaction between different parts.

Abstract
Several noble-gas-containing molecules XNgY were observed experimentally. However, the bonding in such systems is still not understood. Using natural bond orbital and natural resonance theory (NBO/NRT) methods, the present work investigated bonding of the title molecules. The results show that each of the studied XNgY molecules should be better described as a resonance hybrid of ω-bonding and [Formula: see text]-type long-bonding structures: X:- Ng+ - Y, X - Ng+: Y-, and X^Y. The ω-bonding and long-bonding make competing contributions to the composite resonance hybrid due to the accurately preserved bond order conservation principle. We find that the resonance bonding is highly tunable for these noble-gas-containing molecules due to its dependence on the nature of the halogen X or the central noble-gas atoms Ng. When the molecule XNgY consists of a relatively lighter Ng atom, a relatively low-electronegative X atom, and the CN fragment rather than NC, the long-bonding structure X^Y tends to be highlighted. In contrast, the heavy Ng atom and high-electronegative X atom will enhance the ω-bonding structure. Overall, the present work provides electronic principles and chemical insights that help understand the bonding in these XNgY species.

Abstract
The matrix shifts of the H-Xe stretching frequency of noble-gas hydrides, HXeCCH, HXeBr, and HXeI in various noble-gas matrices (in Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe matrices) are investigated via the hybrid quantum-classical simulations. The order of the H-Xe stretching frequencies is found to be ν(gas) < ν(Ne) < ν(Xe) < ν(Kr) < ν(Ar) for HXeCCH and HXeBr, while it is ν(gas) < ν(Ne) < ν(Xe) < ν(Ar) < ν(Kr) for HXeI. This order is anomalous with respect to the matrix dielectric constants, and the calculated results reproduce the experimentally observed shifts quite successfully. We also find that the matrix shifts from the gas-phase values are Δν(HXeCCH) ≈ Δν(HXeCl) < Δν(HXeBr) < Δν(HXeI) in the same noble-gas matrix environments, which implies that the weakly bound molecules exhibit large matrix shifts. The local trapping site is analyzed in detail, and it is shown that a realistic modeling of the surrounding matrix environments is essential to describe the unusual matrix shifts accurately.

Abstract
In this work we have predicted novel rare gas containing cationic molecules, XRgCO(+) (X = F, Cl and Rg = Ar, Kr, Xe) using ab initio quantum chemical methods. Detail structural, stability, vibrational frequency, and charge distribution values are reported using density functional theory, second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory, and coupled-cluster theory based methods. These ions are found to be metastable in nature and exhibit a linear geometry with C∞v symmetry in their minima energy structures, and the nonlinear transition state geometries are associated with Cs symmetry. Except for the two-body dissociation channel (Rg + XCO(+)), these ions are stable with respect to all other dissociation channels. However, the connecting transition states between the above-mentioned two-body dissociation channel products and the predicted ions are associated with sufficient energy barriers, which restricts the metastable species to transform into the global minimum products. Thus, it may be possible to detect and characterize these metastable ions using an electron bombardment technique under cryogenic conditions.

Abstract
Rare-gas hydrides of the type HRgX (Rg = Xe or Rn and X = F, Cl, Br, or I) have been studied using Møller–Plesset and density functional theory methods. Six model core potentials and their associated basis sets were used, with relativistic effects included implicitly. The effects of polarization, correlating, and diffuse basis functions were investigated. Molecular geometries of the metastable hydrides and transition states along the decomposition pathway were computed together with corresponding energies of formation and decomposition. The results of quantum theory of atoms in molecules analysis further elucidate the interactions between atoms in HRgX species and confirm the results of analyses obtained from the natural bond orbitals approach.

Abstract
Ab initio calculations have been performed for the complexes of benzene with HArF, HKrF, and HXeF. The computed results indicate that the complexes of benzene-HArF exist in different conformations and among them those with π-hydrogen bonds are the more stable than those with C-H···F hydrogen bonds. Interestingly, the Ar-H stretching frequency is redshifted in the more stable isomer and blueshifted in the less stable form. The Ng (Ng=Ar, Kr, and Xe) atomic number dependence of the Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds has been explored. The result indicates that the strength of Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds is weakened with the increase of Ng atomic number. Natural bond orbital analysis has been performed to understand the interaction nature, frequency shift of H-Ng stretch, and dependence of Ng-H···π and C-H···F hydrogen bonds on the Ng atomic number.

Abstract
We have predicted a new type of noble-gas anions, XeNO(2)(-) and XeNO(3)(-) with very short Xe-N bond lengths ( approximately 1.8 A), using high-level electronic structure theory with extended atomic basis sets. The chemical bonding between xenon and nitrogen atoms could formally be assigned as triple bonds. The best estimates of the atomization energies of the two anions were found to be 50 and 101 kcal/mol, respectively, and the lowest unimolecular dissociation barriers were estimated to be approximately 42 kcal/mol. These anions were predicted to be kinetically stable at low temperature. The possible neutral "salts" formed between the lithium cation and these two anions were also discussed.

Abstract
Ab initio calculations at the MP2 and CCSD(T) levels of theory have disclosed the conceivable existence of fluorine-coordinated complexes of HHeF with alkali-metal ions and molecules M(+) (M(+)=Li(+)-Cs(+)), M(+)-OH(2), M(+)-NH(3) (M(+)=Li(+), Na(+)), and MX (M=Li, Na; X=F, Cl, Br). All these ligands L induce a shortening of the H-He distance and a lengthening of the He-F distance accompanied by consistent blue- and redshifts, respectively, of the H-He and He-F stretching modes. These structural effects are qualitatively similar to those predicted for other investigated complexes of the noble gas hydrides HNgY, but are quantitatively more pronounced. For example, the blueshifts of the H-He stretching mode are exceptionally large, ranging between around 750 and 1000 cm(-1). The interactions of HHeF with the ligands investigated herein also enhance the (HHe)(+)F(-) dipole character and produce large complexation energies of around 20-60 kcal mol(-1). Most of the HHeF-L complexes are indeed so stable that the three-body dissociation of HHeF into H+He+F, exothermic by around 25-30 kcal mol(-1), becomes endothermic. This effect is, however, accompanied by a strong decrease in the H-He-F bending barrier. The complexation energies, DeltaE, and the bending barriers, E*, are, in particular, related by the inverse relationship E*(kcal mol(-1))=6.9exp[-0.041DeltaE(kcal mol(-1))]. Therefore the HHeF-L complexes, which are definitely stable with respect to H+He+F+L (DeltaE approximately 25-30 kcal mol(-1)), are predicted to have bending barriers of only 0.5-2 kcal mol(-1). Overall, our calculations cast doubt on the conceivable stabilization of HHeF by complexation.

Abstract
Theoretical calculations at the B3LYP, MP2, and CCSD(T) levels of theory disclose the conceivable existence of cationic noble gas hydrides containing two Ng atoms. These species have a general formula of HNgFNgH(+) (Ng = He-Xe), and are the cationic counterparts of the neutral HNgF. The optimized geometries, harmonic frequencies, and bonding properties point to ion-dipole complexes between a fluoride anion and two covalent H-Ng(+) cations, best formulated as (H-Ng(+))(2)F(-). The HXeFXeH(+) is also isoelectronic with the recently experimentally observed HXeOXeH (Khriachtchev et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2008, 130, 6114-6118). The resulting HNgFNgH(+) are thermochemically stable with respect to dissociation into HNg(+) + HNgF and HNg(+) + H + Ng + F, but are largely unstable with respect to both the loss of HF (with formation of HNg(+) + Ng) and H(2)F(+) (with formation of two Ng atoms). These decompositions pass through bent transition structures, and only the heaviest HArFArH(+), HKrFKrH(+), and HXeFXeH(+) are protected by energy barriers large enough (ca. 10-15 kcal mol(-1)) to support their conceivable metastability. In line with other series of noble gas compounds, the neon cation HNeFNeH(+) is the least stable among the various HNgFNgH(+).

Abstract
We report three new noble-gas molecules prepared in low-temperature Kr and Xe matrices from the HCCF precursor by UV photolysis and thermal annealing. The identified molecules are two noble-gas hydrides HNgCCF (Ng = Kr and Xe) and a molecule of another type, HCCKrF. These molecules are assigned with the help of ab initio calculations. All strong absorptions predicted by theory are found in experiments with proper deuteration shifts. The experiments and theory suggest a higher stability against dissociation of HNgCCF molecules compared to HNgCCH reported previously. Surprisingly, only very tentative traces of HCCXeF, which is computationally very stable, are found in experiments. No strong evidence of similar argon compounds is found here.

Abstract
The H bonds of HArF and HF with N2, CO, and BF were studied at the MP2(full)/6-311++G(2d, 2p) level. The results show that only the complexes WY···HArF (WY = N2, OC) and WY···HF (WY = N2, OC, FB) are stable, the H-bonding WY···HArF leads to contraction of the HAr bond with a concomitant frequency blue shift, but the H-bonding WY···HF causes the HF bond to elongate with a frequency red shift. A quantity P is defined to measure polarization of the HX bond; the H bonding causes the P value of the HX bond (X = Ar, F) to increase. The HX bond length change and frequency shift in the H-bonding WY···HArF and WY···HF are mainly caused by intermolecular hyperconjugation, n(Y) → σ*(HX) (X = Ar, F), where electrostatic interaction has only a small contribution. In HArF, the strong intramolecular hyperconjugation, n(F) → σ*(HAr), can adjust electron density on σ*(HAr); upon formation of H bonding, the HAr stretching frequency blue shift is caused by a decrease of intramolecular hyperconjugation and an increase of the s character of the Ar hybrid in the HAr bond, induced by the intermolecular hyperconjugation. In the H bonds of HF without intramolecular hyperconjugation, the intermolecular hyperconjugation, n(Y) → σ*(HF), leads to a red shift of the HF bond, although there is also large rehybridization.

Abstract
The thermal conversion of HArF configurations in solid argon has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. The matrix isolation experiments have been concentrated on temperatures 25-27 K, promoting the transition from the unstable to stable HArF configuration. The combined quantum mechanical-molecular mechanical and temperature-accelerated dynamics approach has been developed to study the real-time evolution of HArF trapped in different matrix-site morphologies. Two realistic pathways of the stable HArF formation are found for annealing at 25-27 K. The conversion mechanism in both pathways involves the local mobility of matrix vacancies in the vicinity of the HArF molecule. These two relaxation processes occurring within different timescales can cause the multiexponential decay of unstable HArF observed experimentally. The theoretical values of the activation energy of 64 meV as well as the corresponding pre-exponential factor of exp(28) s(-1), obtained for one of the unstable HArF configurations, are well consistent with the experimental estimates of 70 meV and exp(30 +/- 3) s(-1), respectively.

Abstract
Noble-gas chemistry has been undergoing a renaissance in recent years, due in large part to noble-gas hydrides, HNgY, where Ng = noble-gas atom and Y = electronegative fragment. These molecules are exceptional because of their relatively weak bonding and large dipole moments, which lead to strongly enhanced effects of the environment, complexation, and reactions. In this Account, we discuss the matrix-isolation synthesis of noble-gas hydrides, their spectroscopic and structural properties, and their stabilities. This family of species was discovered in 1995 and now has 23 members that are prepared in noble-gas matrices (HXeBr, HKrCl, HXeH, HXeOH, HXeO, etc.). The preparations of the first neutral argon molecule, HArF, and halogen-free organic noble-gas molecules (HXeCCH, HXeCC, HKrCCH, etc.) are important highlights of the field. These molecules are formed by the neutral H + Ng + Y channel. The first addition reaction involving HNgY molecules was HXeCC + Xe + H --> HXeCCXeH, and this led to the first hydride with two noble-gas atoms (recently extended by HXeOXeH). The experimental synthesis of HNgY molecules starts with production of H and Y fragments in solid noble gas via the UV photolysis of suitable precursors. The HNgY molecules mainly form upon thermal mobilization of the fragments. One of the unusual properties of these molecules is the hindered rotation of some HNgY molecules in solid matrices; this has been theoretically modeled. HNgY molecules also have unusual solvation effects, and the H-Xe stretching mode shifts to higher frequencies (up to about 150 cm-1) upon interaction with other species. The noble hydrides have a new bonding motif: HNgY molecules can be represented in the form (H-Ng)+Y-, where (H-Ng)+ is mainly covalent, whereas the interaction between (HNg)+ and Y- is predominantly ionic. The HNgY molecules are highly metastable species representing high-energy materials. The decomposition process HNgY --> Ng + HY is always strongly exoergic; however, the decomposition is prevented by high barriers, for instance, about 2 eV for HXeCCH. The other decomposition channel HNgY --> H + Ng + Y is endothermic for all prepared molecules.Areas that appear promising for further study include the extension of argon chemistry, preparation of new bonds with noble-gas atoms (such as Xe-Si bond), and studies of radon compounds. The calculations suggest the existence of related polymers, aggregates, and even HNgY crystals, and their experimental preparation is a major challenge. Another interesting task, still in its early stages, is the preparation of HNgY molecules in the gas phase.

Abstract
Density functional theory (B3LYP) and ab initio theory [second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) and coupled-cluster theory including single, double, and quasiperturbative triple excitations (CCSD(T))] have been used in combination with the standard and augmented correlation consistent basis sets (cc-pVnZ and aug-cc-pVnZ, where n = D, T, and Q) to investigate potential new noble gas compounds. Two classes of molecules were studied: XNgCCNgX and XNgCCX, where Ng = Kr and Ar and X = F and Cl. These molecules were characterized by finding the ground-state structures and calculating the relative energies, charge distributions, and vibrational frequencies. In addition, transition-state structures were also determined and decomposition pathways were identified through intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations.

Abstract
We discuss the present status and reliability of theoretical predictions of noble-gas hydride molecules. It is shown that the single-reference MP2 calculations can produce a rather inaccurate energy diagram for the formation of noble-gas hydrides, and this may mislead the theoretical predictions. We suggest that the computational dissociation energy of the HY precursors should always be compared with the experimental values as a checkpoint for the computational accuracy. The computational inaccuracy probably explains why some compounds that are stable with the single-reference MP2 method (HArC(4)H, HArC(3)N, and HArCN) did not appear in matrix-isolation experiments, whereas the corresponding compounds with Kr and Xe are known.
