Abstract
Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have shown exciting applications in water treatment because of their unique physicochemical properties, which include high surface areas, tunable chemical composition, large interlayer spaces, exchangeable content in interlayer galleries, and ease of modification with other materials. Interestingly, their surface, as well as the intercalated materials within the layers, play a role in the adsorption of the contaminants. The surface area of LDH materials can be further enhanced by calcination. The calcined LDHs can reattain their structural features upon hydration through the "memory effect" and may uptake anionic species within their interlayer galleries. Besides, LDH layers are positively charged within the aqueous media and can interact with specific contaminants through electrostatic interactions. LDHs can be synthesized using various methods, allowing the incorporation of other materials within the layers or forming composites that can selectively capture target pollutants. They have been combined with magnetic nanoparticles to improve their separation after adsorption and enhance adsorptive features in many cases. LDHs are relatively greener materials because they are mostly composed of inorganic salts. Magnetic LDH-based composites have been widely employed for the purification of water contaminated with heavy metals, dyes, anions, organics, pharmaceuticals, and oil. Such materials have shown interesting applications for removing contaminants from real matrices. Moreover, they can be easily regenerated and used for several adsorption-desorption cycles. Magnetic LDHs can be regarded as greener and sustainable because of several green aspects in their synthesis and reusability. We have critically reviewed their synthesis, applications, factors affecting their adsorption performance, and related mechanisms in this review. In the end, some challenges and perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract
Polypyrrole (Ppy)-modified graphene oxide (GO) electrodes were synthesized for the first time in a choline chloride-phenol-based deep eutectic solvent at various temperatures via electrochemical methods without the addition of any inorganic or organic catalysts. The surface morphologies and structures of the modified films were assessed via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The electrochemical properties and stability of the modified electrodes were investigated via cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy at various temperatures and scan rates. The results showed that the specific capacitance of the nanocomposites decreased with increasing scan rate during cycling. Additionally, the specific capacitances of the pure Ppy and Ppy/GO films increased with increasing temperature of the electrolyte (monomer-free), attributed to the reduction in viscosity at elevated temperature. The specific capacitances at 5 mV s-1 were found to be 1071.78 and 594.79 F g-1 for Ppy/GO (20 wt %) at 50 and 25 °C, respectively. It was also observed that the resistance in the cell decreased with increasing electrolyte temperature. Ppy/GO at 50 mV s-1 was found to have the highest capacitance retention of 85% after 2000 cycles, showing better cycling stability than the pure Ppy film. Herein, the incorporation of GO in the Ppy matrix led to improved specific capacitance and cyclic stability, suggesting that Ppy/GO could represent a promising electrode material for supercapacitor applications.

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of polypyrrole (PPy) on cellulose acetate (CA) membranes prepared by the electrospinning technique (controlled variables) in the recovery of gold complexes of aqueous solutions that are environmentally ecofriendly. CA-PPy membranes were characterized by SEM, EDS, FTIR spectroscopy, contact angle measurements, electrical conductivity, and mechanical tests. They were submerged in two aqueous solutions using two gold complexes, AuI2 - and AuBr4 -, at room temperature. The recovery percentage was evaluated for several hours using the atomic adsorption technique for both complexes. The main findings indicate that the percentage of recovery in the first hours of the test was very high (>80%). The adsorption efficiency maxima were similar for both complexes (91%). The Langmuir model suggests the formation of a monolayer on the surface. The electrical conductivity did not change over time, and the mechanical properties indicate reuse in several experiments. Furthermore, the theoretical analysis showed that the system is helpful at acidic pH, funding its minimum energy. It is shown in this study that the used CA-PPy membranes show adsorption, absorption, and reusable properties with the effective recovery of the complexes in the first hours. These membranes could substitute for materials that are not environmentally ecofriendly.

Abstract
Conducting polymers (CPs) have gained attention as electrode materials in bioengineering mainly because of their mechanical softness compared to conventional inorganic materials. To achieve better performance and broaden bioelectronics applications, the surface modification of soft zwitterionic polymers with antifouling properties represents a facile approach to preventing unwanted nonspecific protein adsorption and improving biocompatibility. This feature article emphasizes the antifouling properties of zwitterionic CPs, accompanied by their molecular synthesis and surface modification methods and an analysis of the interfacial phenomenon. Herein, commonly used methods for zwitterionic functionalization on CPs are introduced, including the synthesis of zwitterionic moieties on CP molecules and postsurface modification, such as the grafting of zwitterionic polymer brushes. To analyze the chain conformation, the structure of bound water in the vicinity of zwitterionic CPs and biomolecule behavior, such as protein adsorption or cell adhesion, provide critical insights into the antifouling properties. Integrating these characterization techniques offers general guidelines and paves the way for designing new zwitterionic CPs for advanced biomedical applications. Recent advances in newly designed zwitterionic CP-based electrodes have demonstrated outstanding potential in modern biomedical applications.

Abstract
Despite the photocatalytic organic pollutant degradation using ZnO started in 1910-1911, many challenges are still ahead, and several critical issues have to be addressed. Large band gap, and short life-time of photogenerated electrons and holes are critical issues negatively affect the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Various approaches have been introduced to overcome these issues including intrinsic doping, extrinsic doping, and heterostructure. This review introduces unique and deep insights into tuning of the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. It starts by description of how to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO through tuning its morphology, surface area, exposed face, and intrinsic defects. Afterward, the review explains how the Z-scheme approach succeed to address the redox weakened issue of heterojunction approach. In general, this review provides a clear image that helps the researcher to tune the photocatalytic activity of pristine ZnO and its heterostructure.

Abstract
Cellulose fiber (CelF) is a biodegradable and renewable material with excellent performance but negligible triboelectric polarizability. Methods to enhance and rationally tune the triboelectric properties of CelF are needed to further its application for energy harvesting. In this work, methyl-orange-doped polypyrrole (MO-PPy) was in situ coated on CelF as a mediating layer to promote the growth of metal–organic framework ZIF-8 and to construct a cellulose-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). The results showed that a small amount of MO-PPy generated in situ significantly promoted the growth of ZIF-8 on CelF, and the ZIF-8 deposition ratio was able to increase from 7.8% (ZIF-8/CelF) to 31.8% (ZIF-8/MO-PPy@CelF). ZIF-8/MO-PPy@CelF remained electrically conductive and became triboelectrically positive, and the triboelectricity’s positivity was improved with the increase in the ZIF-8 deposition ratio. The cellulose-based TENG constructed with ZIF-8/MO-PPy@CelF (31.8% ZIF-8 deposition ratio) and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) could generate a transfer charge of 47.4 nC, open-circuit voltage of 129 V and short-circuit current of 6.8 μA—about 4 times higher than those of ZIF-8/CelF (7.8% ZIF-8 deposition ratio)—and had excellent cycling stability (open-circuit voltage remained almost constant after 10,000 cycles). MO-PPy not only greatly facilitated the growth of ZIF-8 on CelF, but also acted as an electrode active phase for TENG. The novel TENG based on ZIF-8/MO-PPy@CelF composite has cheerful prospects in many applications, such as self-powered supercapacitors, sensors and monitors, smart pianos, ping-pong tables, floor mats, etc.

Abstract
Heavy metals are a threat against human health. During the last century, with increased industrial activities, many water resources have been contaminated by heavy metals. Meanwhile the number of scientific studies about removing these toxic substances from aqueous environments has increased exponentially. According to bibliometric analysis the number of articles from 2000 to 2019 experienced a 1700% growth rate. China, India and the United States have published the greatest number of top-cited articles on the topic, with China in first place by a large margin. Six clusters of papers (by topic) were identified. From among the processes such as adsorption, membrane filtration, and ion exchange, adsorption has the lion's share of the investigations. Technical and efficiency considerations, as well as environmental impact and cost-effectiveness, were chosen as criteria to compare different methods. According to life cycle assessment, adsorption has the least amount of negative environmental effects compared to other trending methods such as membrane filtration and ion exchange. From a financial viewpoint, utilizing biosorbents and biochars for adsorption are the best options. Unlike other methods which depend on pretreatment processes and have a high energy demand, these sorbents are cost-effective and exhibit acceptable performance.

Abstract
Mesoporous carbon is a promising material having multiple applications. It can act as a catalytic support and can be used in energy storage devices. Moreover, mesoporous carbon controls body’s oral drug delivery system and adsorb poisonous metal from water and various other molecules from an aqueous solution. The accuracy and improved activity of the carbon materials depend on some parameters. The recent breakthrough in the synthesis of mesoporous carbon, with high surface area, large pore-volume, and good thermostability, improves its activity manifold in performing functions. Considering the promising application of mesoporous carbon, it should be broadly illustrated in the literature. This review summarizes the potential application of mesoporous carbon in many scientific disciplines. Moreover, the outlook for further improvement of mesoporous carbon has been demonstrated in detail. Hopefully, it would act as a reference guidebook for researchers about the putative application of mesoporous carbon in multidimensional fields.

Abstract
AbstractPoly-3-thiopheneboronic acid was synthesized by electrochemical polymerization from 3-thienylboronic acid dissolved in the mixture of boron trifluoride diethyl etherate and acetonitrile. Cyclic voltammetry during electropolymerization shows oxidative and reductive peaks growing in each next cycle. An investigation by scanning electron microscopy displayed the polymer layer like a highly flexible film of 110 nm thick with grains of 60–120 nm in size. Strong negative solvatochromic effect was observed. Optical spectra of poly-3-thienylboronic acid at different potentials and pH were studied. Potential cycling leads to a well reversible electrochromic effect. At pH 7.4, the increase of potential leads to the decrease in the absorption band at 480 nm and to the rise in the absorption band at 810 nm with an isosbestic point at 585 nm. Spectroelectrochemical behavior of poly-3-thienylboronic acid and polythiophene was compared. Binding of sorbitol at fixed electrode potential leads to an increase in the absorbance in the shortwave band and to the decrease in the longwave band; the effect depends on the electrode potential and pH. Perspectives of application of poly-3-thienylboronic acid as new chemosensitive material are discussed.

Abstract
In this study, polypyrrole-based activated carbon was prepared by the carbonization of polypyrrole at 650 °C for 2 h in the presence of four-times the mass of KOH as a chemical activator. The structural and morphological properties of the product (polypyrrole-based activated carbon (PPyAC4)), analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, support its applicability as an adsorbent. The adsorption characteristics of PPyAC4 were examined through the adsorption of lead ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of various factors, including initial ion concentration, pH, contact time, and adsorbent dose, on the adsorption of Pb2+ was investigated to identify the optimum adsorption conditions. The experimental data fit well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 = 0.9997) and the Freundlich isotherm equation (R2 = 0.9950), suggesting a chemisorption pathway. The adsorption capacity was found to increase with increases in time and initial concentration, while it decreased with an increase in adsorbent dose. Additionally, the highest adsorption was attained at pH 5.5. The calculated maximum capacity, qm, determined from the Langmuir model was 50 mg/g.

Selective removal of toxic Cr(VI) from aqueous solution by adsorption combined with reduction at a magnetic nanocomposite surface. J Colloid Interface Sci 2017; 503:214-228. [PMID: 28527339 DOI: 10.1016/j.jcis.2017.05.018] [Citation(s) in RCA: 123] [Impact Index Per Article: 17.6] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/17/2017] [Revised: 05/08/2017] [Accepted: 05/08/2017] [Indexed: 12/14/2022]
Abstract
The adsorption of toxic hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and its reduction to trivalent chromium (Cr(III)) are important processes for the treatment of industrial wastewater. Conducting polymers can adsorb and reduce Cr(VI) to less toxic Cr(III) but have low adsorption capacities due to agglomeration of particles and are difficult to separate from treated water. In this study, magnetic polypyrrole (PPy)-polyaniline (PANI)/iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanocomposite was synthesized for the selective removal of Cr(VI) in aqueous solution. PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was characterized using various techniques including ATR-FTIR, FE-SEM, HR-TEM, EDX, TGA, XRD, VSM and XPS analyses. PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite (0.05g) removed 99% of Cr(VI) from aqueous solution (100mg/L, pH 2). Speciation studies confirmed Cr(VI) adsorption and reduction to Cr(III) by the PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite in solutions with initial pH of 2 and 3 and that no Cr(VI) reduction occurred at pH values of 4 and above. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) removal by PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite at pH 2 was 303mg/g at 25°C. PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was highly selective for Cr(VI) removal and could be used for three consecutive treatment cycles without loss of adsorption capacity. Moreover, the magnetic nanocomposite could be separated from the reaction fluid using an external magnet. PPy-PANI/Fe3O4 nanocomposite is therefore a promising magnetic adsorbent for the treatment of industrial wastewater.

Abstract
A radiotracer study was conducted to investigate the removal characteristics of cadmium (109Cd) from aqueous solution by polypyrrole/ sawdust composite. Several factors such as solution pH, sorbent dosage, initial concentration, contact time, temperature and interfering metal ions were found to have influence on the adsorption process. The kinetics of adsorption was relatively fast, reaching equilibrium within 3 hours. A lowering of the solution pH reduced the removal efficiency from 99.3 to ~ 46.7% and an ambient temperature of 25°C was found to be optimum for maximum adsorption. The presence of sodium and potassium ions inhibited 109Cd removal from its aqueous solution. The experimental data for 109Cd adsorption showed a very good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and a pseudo-first order kinetic model. The surface condition of the adsorbent before and after cadmium loading was investigated using BET, FESEM and FTIR. Considering the low cost of the precursor's materials and the toxicity of 109Cd radioactive metal, polypyrrole synthesized on the sawdust of Dryobalanops aromatic could be used as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of 109Cd radioisotope from radionuclide-containing effluents.

Abstract
Polypyrrole/hydrous tin oxide nanocomposites (PPy/HSnO NC 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) were synthesized through encapsulating HSnO by the PPy via an in situ polymerization for fluoride removal. The optimized adsorbent i.e. PPy/HSnO NC 3 was characterized using FE-SEM, HR-TEM, ATR-FTIR, XRD, BET, TGA and zeta sizer. Microscopic images revealed the encapsulation of HSnO by precipitating PPy during polymerization. The FTIR and XRD studies confirmed the presence of both constituents. The BET surface area and pHpzc of the adsorbent were estimated to be 65.758m(2)/g and 7.6, respectively. The fluoride adsorption followed pseudo-second-order model and was commendably rapid. The monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 26.16-28.99mg/g at pH 6.5±0.1. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the sorption of F(-) was spontaneous, endothermic and that physisorption occurred. The calculated activation energy (Ea∼20.05kJ/mol) provided further evidence of a physisorption mechanism. Moreover, the adsorbent performed very well over a considerably wide pH range of 3.5-8.5 and in the presence of other co-existing ions. The regeneration of the F(-) laden PPy/HSnO NC 3 showed a high desorption efficiency of 95.81% up to 3 cycles. Ground water tested results also demonstrate the potential utility of the PPy/HSnO NC as an effective adsorbent.

Abstract
Polypyrrole (ppy)-modified electrode was used for electroreduction of Cr(VI) and showed favorable advantage with extremely higher removal percentage and current efficiency over stainless steel (SS) electrode. In potentiostatic (PS) process and in stagnant solution, ppy electrode achieved a Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 16% and a current efficiency of 23% compared to 0 for SS electrode at a potential of -0.8V. In potentiodynamic (PD) process and in stagnant solutions, ppy electrode exhibited a Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 56% at a potential range from -0.8 to 0.8V whereas SS electrode presented none at the same conditions. Solution stirring promoted mass transportation and dramatically improved Cr(VI) removal efficiency, achieving 92% (ppy electrode) and 18% (SS electrode) in PS process and 100% (ppy electrode) and 36% (SS electrode) in PD process at 100rpm. ppy electrode exhibited an efficient Cr(VI) reduction at a wide potential range from -0.8 to 0.8V than the potential ranges of -0.8 to 0V and 0-0.8V. While ppy stability under PD condition of -0.8 to 0.8V was not as satisfactory as PS condition at -0.8V, but better than PS condition at 0.8V. These results demonstrate that ppy-modified electrode in PD process may be a promising alternative for Cr(VI) electroreduction.

Abstract
This critical review describes a class of polymers prepared by electrochemical polymerization that employs the concept of molecular imprinting for chemical sensing. The principal focus is on both conducting and nonconducting polymers prepared by electropolymerization of electroactive functional monomers, such as pristine and derivatized pyrrole, aminophenylboronic acid, thiophene, porphyrin, aniline, phenylenediamine, phenol, and thiophenol. A critical evaluation of the literature on electrosynthesized molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) applied as recognition elements of chemical sensors is presented. The aim of this review is to highlight recent achievements in analytical applications of these MIPs, including present strategies of determination of different analytes as well as identification and solutions for problems encountered.
