Abstract
The stability constants of the mixed-ligand complexes formed between Cu(Arm)2+, where Arm=2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), and the dianions of 9-[2-(2-phosphonoethoxy)ethyl]adenine (PEEA2-) and (2-phosphonoethoxy)ethane (PEE2-), also known as [2-(2-ethoxy)ethyl]phosphonate, were determined by potentiometric pH titrations in aqueous solution (25 degrees C; I=0.1 M, NaNO3). The ternary Cu(Arm)(PEEA) complexes are considerably more stable than the corresponding Cu(Arm)(R-PO3) species, where R-PO3(2-) represents a phosph(on)ate ligand with a group R that is unable to participate in any kind of interaction within the complexes. The increased stability is attributed to intramolecular stack formation in the Cu(Arm)(PEEA) complexes and also, to a smaller extent, to the formation of 6-membered chelates involving the ether oxygen atom present in the -CH2-O-CH2-CH2-PO3(2-) residue of PEEA2-. This latter interaction is separately quantified by studying the ternary Cu(Arm)(PEE) complexes which can form the 6-membered chelates but where no intramolecular ligand-ligand stacking is possible. Application of these results allows a quantitative analysis of the intramolecular equilibria involving three structurally different Cu(Arm)(PEEA) species; e.g., of the Cu(Bpy)(PEEA) system about 11% exist with the metal ion solely coordinated to the phosphonate group, 4% as a 6-membered chelate involving the ether oxygen atom of the -CH2-O-CH2CH2-PO3(2-) residue, and 85% with an intramolecular stack between the adenine moiety of PEEA2- and the aromatic rings of Bpy. In addition, the Cu(Arm)(PEEA) complexes may be protonated, leading to Cu(Arm)(H;PEEA)+ species for which it is concluded that the proton is located at the phosphonate group and that the complexes are mainly formed (50 and 70%) by a stacking adduct between Cu(Arm)2+ and the adenine residue of H(PEEA)-. Finally, the stacking properties of adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP2-), of the dianion of 9-[2-(phophonomethoxy)ethyl]adenine (PMEA2-) and of several of its analogues (=PA2-) are compared in their ternary Cu(Arm)(AMP) and Cu(Arm)(PA) systems. Conclusions regarding the antiviral properties of several acyclic nucleoside phosphonates are shortly discussed.

Abstract
The NH-pi interaction has been detected in the crystal structures of Co(III) ternary complexes with N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-(S)-phenylalanine (BCMPA) and aromatic amino acids including (S)-phenylalanine ((S)-Phe), (R)-phenylalanine ((R)-Phe), and (S)-tryptophan ((S)-Trp)). Additionally, this interaction has been studied in solution for Co(III) ternary complexes with BCMPA or NTA (NTA = nitrilotriacetic acid) and several amino acids (AA) by means of electronic absorption, circular dichroism (CD), and (1)H NMR spectroscopies. The CD intensities of the Co(III) complexes with aromatic amino acids measured in the d-d region ( approximately 20.5 x 10(3) cm(-)(1)) are significantly decreased in ethanol solutions relative to water. Analogous complexes with aliphatic amino acids do not exhibit this solvent effect. The (1)H NMR spectra of the Co(III) complexes with aromatic amino acids measured in DMSO-d(6) exhibit upfield shifts of the NH peaks compared with those with aliphatic amino acids, which suggest a shielding effect due to the aromaticity. The upshift values coincide with those experimentally evaluated from the crystal structures. The magnitude of the upfield shifts agrees well with Hammett's rule, indicating that the increase of pi-electron densities on the aromatic rings leads attractive NH-pi interaction that exerts a larger shielding effect for the NH protons. In ligand-substitution reactions of the carbonatocobalt(III) complexes with amino acids, the yields of those with aromatic amino acids are higher than the yields obtained for complexes with aliphatic amino acids. This observation is discussed in connection with the important contribution of the NH-pi interaction as one of the promotion factors in the reaction.

Abstract
To the best of our knowledge, for the first time the stabilities of sexternary complexes are determined by potentiometric pH titrations in aqueous solution at 25 degrees C and I = 0.1 M (NaNO3). The sexternary complexes form by binding of the binary Cu(Arm)2+ complexes, where Arm = 2,2'-bipyridine (Bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (Phen), to the -PO3(2-) group present in the quaternary cis-(NH3)2Pt(dGuo)(dGMP) complex. It is shown by stability constant comparisons and spectrophotometric measurements (observation of charge-transfer bands for the Phen system) that the [cis-(NH3)2Pt(dGuo)(dGMP).Cu(Arm)]2+ complexes can fold in such a way that aromatic ring stacking between the aromatic rings of Bpy or Phen and a guanine residue (most probably the one of dGMP2-) becomes possible. The formation degree of the stacks reaches approximately 25 and 50% for the [cis-(NH3)2Pt-(dGuo)(dGMP).Cu(Bpy)]2+ and [cis-(NH3)2Pt(dGuo)(dGMP).Cu(Phen)]2+ species, respectively. By comparisons with Cu(Arm)(dGMP) complexes, it is shown that the cis-(NH3)2Pt2+ unit coordinated to N7 of the guanine residues in the sexternary complexes inhibits stacking but does not prevent it. This result is of general importance because it demonstrates that in aqueous solution purine residues of nucleotides or nucleic acids that carry a metal ion at N7 can still undergo stacking interactions with other suitable aromatic ring systems.

Abstract
The stability constants of the 1:1 complexes between Cu2+ and Zn2+ with formate, acetate and several phenylalkanecarboxylates, i.e. C6H5-(CH2)n-COO- with n = 0 to 5, are summarized for water, 50% aqueous ethanol and 50% aqueous dioxane (I = 0.1 M; 25 degrees C): Complex stability depends upon carboxylate group basicity. The influence of varying amounts of ethanol or dioxane (up to 90%) on the stability of the Cu2+ and Zn2+ (M2+) complexes with formate and acetate (CA) was measured by potentiometric pH titrations. The values for pKHH(CA) and log KMM(CA) increase, as expected, with increasing amounts of the organic solvents, i.e. with decreasing solvent polarity. The changes in the equilibrium constants are also evaluated with regard to the mole fractions of the organic solvents and the corresponding dielectric constants. These results may be used to estimate for low dielectric cavities in proteins the equivalent solution dielectric constant on the basis of enhanced carboxylate basicity or metal ion binding capability (method 1). Furthermore, the measured stability constants are used for comparisons of the coordination tendency of carboxylate ligands towards zinc(II)-metalloenzymes (method 2); in this way the equivalent solution dielectric constants in the active-site cavities of bovine carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase A are estimated: the values are of the order of 35 and 70, respectively. This method seems to be generally applicable to metalloproteins.
