Abstract
Estrogen receptors (ERs) are thought to be the ancestor of all steroid receptors and are present in most lophotrochozoans studied to date, including molluscs, annelids, and rotifers. A number of studies have investigated the functional role of estrogen receptors in invertebrate species, although most are in molluscs, where the receptor is constitutively active. In vitro experiments provided evidence for ligand-activated estrogen receptors in annelids, raising important questions about the role of estrogen signalling in lophotrochozoan lineages. Here, we review the concordant and discordant evidence of estradiol receptor signalling in lophotrochozoans, with a focus on annelids and rotifers. We explore the de novo synthesis of estrogens, the evolution and expression of estrogen receptors, and physiological responses to activation of estrogen receptors in the lophotrochozoan phyla Annelida and Rotifera. Key data are missing to determine if de novo biosynthesis of estradiol in non-molluscan lophotrochozoans is likely. For example, an ortholog for the CYP11 gene is present, but confirmation of substrate conversion and measured tissue products is lacking. Orthologs CYP17 and CYP19 are lacking, yet intermediates or products (e.g. estradiol) in tissues have been measured. Estrogen receptors are present in multiple species, and for a limited number, in vitro data show agonist binding of estradiol and/or transcriptional activation. The expression patterns of the lophotrochozoan ERs suggest developmental, reproductive, and digestive roles but are highly species dependent. E2 exposures suggest that lophotrochozoan ERs may play a role in reproduction, but no strong dose-response relationship has been established. Therefore, we expect most lophotrochozoan species, outside of perhaps platyhelminths, to have an ER but their physiological role remains elusive. Mining genomes for orthologs gene families responsible for steroidogenesis, coupled with in vitro and in vivo studies of the steroid pathway are needed to better assess whether lophotrochozoans are capable of estradiol biosynthesis. One major challenge is that much of the data are divided across a diversity of species. We propose that the polychaetes Capitella teleta or Platyneris dumerilii, and rotifer Brachionus manjavacas may be strong species choices for studies of estrogen receptor signalling, because of available genomic data, established laboratory culture techniques, and gene knockout potential.

Abstract
Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a main pest of forest trees. In this study, the effects of Serratia marcescens Bizio (SM1) infection on the transcriptome of H. cunea were studied. The expression of 1068 unigenes in the transcriptome of H. cunea infected by S. marcescens was markedly different from that in the control of H. cunea; 474 genes were upregulated, and 594 genes were downregulated in the former. Among them, 8 cytochrome P450s (CYPs), 5 uridine diphosphate-glycosyltransferases (UGTs) and 3 glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) were significantly differentially expressed. Pathway enrichment analysis indicated that these differentially expressed detoxification enzyme genes were mainly involved in the drug metabolism pathway, glutathione metabolism pathway and ABC transporter pathway. Interestingly, we found that five UGTs were related to oestradiol metabolism in the steroid hormone biosynthesis pathway. Furthermore, the real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR results showed that SM1 could induce the expression of CYPs and UGTs, but inhibit the expression of GSTs. This research will identify the response of important detoxification enzymes to S. marcescens, which will provide a theoretical foundation for the development of new immunosuppressants for H. cunea control. Furthermore, H. cunea was performed transcriptome sequencing to explore the key metabolic pathways, signalling pathways and genes affected by S. marcescens, which will clarify the mechanisms of S. marcescens infection of H. cunea. In addition, this study also explored the relationship between H. cunea and S. marcescens, which will provide a theoretical basis for the biological control of H. cunea by using S. marcescens.

Abstract
The vertebrate estrogens include 17-β-estradiol (E2), which has an analog in silkworm ovaries. In this study, the Bombyx mori vitellogenin gene (BmVg) was used as a biomarker to analyze the function of the E2 in silkworm. In most oviparous animals, Vg has female-specific expression. However, BmVg expression was also detected in B. mori males. Stage specific fluctuation of BmVg expression was similar in males and females, but expression levels in males were lower than in females. E2 treatment by injection or feeding of male larvae in the final instar stage induced and stimulated male BmVg transcription and protein synthesis. When silkworm ovary primordia were transplanted into males, BmVg was induced in male fat bodies. Transplanted ovaries primordia were also able to develop into ovaries and produce mature eggs. When females were treated with E2 promoted BmVg/BmVn protein accumulation in hemolymph, ovaries and eggs. However, BmVg transcription was decreased in female fat bodies. An E2 analog was identified in the hemolymph of day 3 wandering silkworms using high-performance liquid chromatography. Estradiol titers from fifth late-instar larvae to pupal stage were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The results suggested that silkworms synthesized a vertebrate E2 analog. This study found that E2 promoted the synthesis of BmVg, a female typical protein in silkworms.

Abstract
Although exposure of mosquito larvae to agricultural chemicals such as herbicides is common and widespread, our understanding of how these chemicals affect mosquito ecology and behavior is limited. This study investigated how an environmentally relevant concentration of two herbicides, atrazine and glyphosate, affects mosquito life history traits. One hundred and fifty (150) first instar Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (L.) or Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus (Skuse) larvae were reared in 1.6 L of live oak leaf (Quercus virginiana) infusion in the presence (5 mg/L) or absence (0 mg/L) of atrazine or glyphosate. The containers were monitored daily to determine the emergence rates, sex ratio, male and female emergence times, and female body size. Emergence rates of A. aegypti from atrazine treatment were significantly higher relative to either glyphosate or control treatments (A. aegypti: atrazine = 93 ± 6% (±95% CI), glyphosate = 82 ± 5%, control = 78 ± 5%), while emergence rates of A. albopictus in atrazine treatments were significantly higher than in glyphosate treatments but not in controls (A. albopictus: atrazine = 84 ± 5 %, glyphosate = 76 ± 4%, control = 78 ± 4%). For both mosquito species, a sex ratio distortion with male bias was observed in control and glyphosate treatments, but not in atrazine treatments (A. aegypti: atrazine = 0.90 ± 0.17 (±SE), glyphosate = 1.63 ± 0.21, control = 1.69 ± 0.26; A. albopictus: atrazine = 1.09 ± 0.08, glyphosate = 1.88 ± 0.12, control = 1.37 ± 0.11). Emergence times for both sexes of the two mosquito species were significantly longer in atrazine treatments compared to glyphosate or control treatments (A. aegypti: females: atrazine = 11.20 ± 0.50 (days ± 95 % CI), glyphosate = 9.71 ± 0.23, control = 9.87 ± 0.21; males: atrazine = 9.46 ± 0.27, glyphosate = 8.80 ± 0.25, control = 8.85 ± 0.24; A. albopictus: females: atrazine = 17.40 ± 1.70, glyphosate = 12.4 ± 0.40, control = 12.5 ± 0.30; males: atrazine = 12.96 ± 0.41, glyphosate = 10.48 ± 0.24, control = 10.64 ± 0.37). For A. albopictus but not A. aegypti, adult females from atrazine treatment had significantly longer wing lengths compared to those from glyphosate or control treatments (A. albopictus: atrazine = 3.06 ± 0.07 (mm ± 95% CI), glyphosate = 2.80 ± 0.07, control = 2.83 ± 0.06). These results demonstrate the potential for atrazine, a widely used herbicide, to influence epidemiologically relevant life history traits of mosquitoes.

Abstract
The role that endocrine disruption could play in sexual selection remains relatively untested, and although estrogens occur in insects, little information exists about their biological role in insect reproduction. Atrazine is a commonly applied herbicide that mimics estrogen in vertebrates. Tenebrio molitor were raised from egg to adult under a gradation of environmentally relevant atrazine exposures and a non-treated control. Atrazine was delivered in the drinking water ad libitum. Female T. molitor were provided with a choice between unrelated males raised under three levels of atrazine exposures. Female preference for males demonstrated a non-monotonic inverted U-shaped response to atrazine exposure. There was no significant difference between the control and the high exposure to atrazine. Excluding the control, female preference increased as exposure concentration increased. These results have important repercussions for nonlethal effects of endocrine disruption on populations, their capacity to interfere with sexual selection, and the role of estrogen in pheromone communication among insects.

Abstract
In recent years, various vertebrate peptide and steroid hormones have been identified in invertebrates, estradiol-17beta (E2) being a major one. We have specifically shown NADP-malate dehydrogenase (NADP-MDH) activity in fifth instar larval fatbody of female silkworm, Bombyx mori, as an E2 responsive parameter. Interestingly enough, estradiol-induced increase in the enzyme activity could be counteracted by simultaneous application of specific E2-inhibitor, ICI-182780. Further, a nice correlation was obtained among the E2 titre, specific *E2 binding and expression of NADP-MDH activity in fatbody during different days of normal fifth instar larval development. Though the nature of the binding sites is quite similar to known steroid receptors of vertebrate, the reported absence of estrogen receptor gene in some insects poses a question. A recent finding regarding the presence of an estrogen-related receptor ortholog in fruit fly may provide some answers. The specific effects elicited by estradiol in the female fatbody of this insect support its possibility of having an important metabolic function. This role played by E2, whether hormonal or not, is yet to be identified.

Abstract
The vertebrate system of steroid hormones appears to have been conserved widely throughout the animal kingdom. The sex hormone estrogen, 17-beta-estradiol (E2), long considered to be exclusively a vertebrate hormone, is found also in invertebrates related to reproductive and developmental processes such as spawning, vitellogenesis and molting. These processes are affected by estrogen induced changes at the genomic level and take place at a large time scale. The discovery of surface membrane receptors for E2 has opened new possibilities for the involvement of estrogen in biological functions other than reproductive. These processes take place within a few seconds to minutes and involve sudden cytosolic calcium transients, activation of adenylate cyclase or activation of phospholipase C (PLC). E2 can modulate the production of nitric oxide (NO) in endotheliar and other cells. A similar mechanism linking estrogen to cNOS catalized nitric oxide (NO) release is reported herein for the first time in several tissues of the giant cockroach Blaberus craniifer. This process has been identified in the brain, nerve cord, vasculature and ovaries. This effect is concentration dependent and is inhibited by tamoxifen an estrogen receptor blocker.

Abstract
Although estradiol-17beta (E2) is known to be a vertebrate sex steroid, its presence in insects, particularly in Bombyx mori, has recently created considerable sensation regarding its significance in insect life. The specificity of estradiol action on the posterior silk gland (PSG) of B. mori has been previously assessed by the use of ICI-182780 as a specific receptor antagonist for estradiol. The present study provides evidence for systematic changes in the titer of estradiol-17beta in B. mori and its specific binding sites in the posterior silk gland according to the physiological age of fifth instar larvae. The changes in the estradiol level in the PSG after E2 treatment have also been determined to assess whether the administered estradiol has been taken up by the silk gland cells and whether the effect of exogenously administered E2 on the PSG is direct. The correlation in the profile of E2 binding sites with the endogenous estradiol level of PSG on different days of fifth instar larvae suggests that the level of binding sites in the PSG is regulated by the estradiol titer and that E2 may have some biological function in B. mori. Scatchard analysis of E2 binding sites in the PSG on 9th day of fifth instar larvae reveals that it consists of only one type of binding component. The dissociation constant (Kd) and maximum binding capacity (Bmax) of this putative E2 receptor have been found to be 8.98 +/- 0.744 nM and 55.8 +/- 5.53 fmol/mg cytosolic protein, respectively. The study thus indicates an involvement of the putative receptor in E2-mediated action on the silk gland of B. mori and paves a pathway for further evaluation of the physiological relevance of the presence of vertebrate steroids in insects.
