Nafion ® /ORMOSIL nanocomposites via polymer-in situ sol–gel reactions. 1. Probe of ORMOSIL phase nanostructures by 29 Si solid-state NMR spectroscopy

Thermostable water reservoirs in the interlayer space of a sodium hectorite clay through the intercalation of γ-aminopropyl(dimethyl)ethoxysilane in toluene

Treatment of Na⁺-based hectorite LAPONITE® (LAP) and of Na⁺-montmorillonite (MMT) with a homologous series of γ-aminopropyl(methyl)_x(ethoxy)_ysilanes (x + y = 3, y > 0) in toluene was studied by means of thermogravimetric analysis coupled with mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, ²⁹Si and ²³Na solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. The triethoxy silane (APTS) exclusively grafts on the clays' edges as branched oligomers whereas both the monoethoxy silane (APMS) and the diethoxy silane (APDS) are also intercalated, the latter as linear oligomers. Intercalation of APMS varies for MMT and LAP: MMT hosts the smallest amounts of the silanes with marginal increase of the basal distance and no stabilization of water. On the contrary, LAP accommodates the largest amount of guests in the form of monomeric APMS which yields the largest increase of the basal distance and stabilizes water up to 200 °C when APMS dimerizes. APMS stabilization is attributed to intramolecular Si-O-H-NH₂ hydrogen bonds and the hydrophobic geminal methyl groups together with the trimethylene sides of the cyclic monomers are thought to compartmentalize the hydrated sodium sites. The high temperature release of water from APMS@LAP is discussed in the light of potentially triggered interphase degradation in composite materials for recycling purposes.

Catalyzed Reaction of Cellulose and Lignin with Methyltrimethoxysilane-FT-IR, 13C NMR and 29Si NMR Studies

It can be found that reaction mechanisms and interactions between wood and organosilicone compounds have not been sufficiently explored. The aim of the study was to determine bonds formed between either cellulose or lignin and methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMOS) during a catalytic silanization reaction. Silanization was performed in the presence of two catalysts of a diverse mechanism of functionalization: aluminum acetylacetonate (Al(acac)₃) and acetic acid (AcOH). For this purpose, FT-IR, ¹³C and ²⁹Si NMR techniques were used. Cellulose silanization efficiency without a catalyst was unlikely. Lignin undergoes a silanization reaction with alkoxysilanes much easier than cellulose. The results showed new bonds between biopolymers and the silanising agent. The new bonds were confirmed by signals at the FT-IR spectra, e.g., 770 cm⁻¹ and 1270 cm⁻¹ (Si–CH₃), and at the NMR signal coming from the T¹, T² and T³ structures. Efficiency of reaction was confirmed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) analysis.

A low-cost and water resistant biomass adhesive derived from the hydrolysate of leather waste

A low-cost and water resistant biomass adhesive was prepared by using collagen hydrolysate extracted from leather wastes as the starting material and silane coupling agent as the crosslinking agent.

Modification of Nafion® Membrane via a Sol-Gel Route for Vanadium Redox Flow Energy Storage Battery Applications

Nafion 117(N-117)/SiO2-SO3H modified membranes were prepared using the 3-Mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) to react with H2O2via in situ sol-gel route. Basic properties including water uptake, contact angle, ion exchange capacity (IEC), vanadium ion permeability, impedance, and conductivity were measured to investigate how they affect the charge-discharge characteristics of a cell. Furthermore, we also set a vanadium redox flow energy battery (VRFB) single cell by the unmodified/modified N-117 membranes as a separated membrane to test its charge/discharge performance and compare the relations among the impedance and efficiency. The results show that the appropriate amount of SiO2-SO3H led into the N-117 membrane contributive to the improvement of proton conductivity and vanadium ion selectivity. The permeability was effectively decreased from original 3.13 × 10−6 cm2/min for unmodified N-117 to 0.13 × 10−6 cm2/min for modified membrane. The IEC was raised from original 0.99 mmol/g to 1.24 mmol/g. The modified membrane showed a good cell performance in the VRFB charge/discharge experiment, and the maximum coulombic efficiency was up to 94%, and energy efficiency was 82%. In comparison with unmodified N-117, the energy efficiency of modified membrane had increased more than around 10%.

Space survivable polyimides with excellent optical transparency and self-healing properties derived from hyperbranched polysiloxane

A novel space survivable polyimide with a variety of desirable properties such as excellent thermal stability, high optical transparency, good mechanical strength, satisfactory break elongation, and outstanding atomic oxygen (AO) erosion resistance has been prepared by first synthesizing hyperbranched polysiloxane (HBPSi) and second incorporating HBPSi into polyimide (PI) chains via copolycondensation reactions. The 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (29Si NMR) spectrum of HBPSi indicated that HBPSi possessed hyperbranched topology. The ground-based simulated AO exposure experiments demonstrated the mass loss of HBPSi polyimides decreased with increasing HBPSi addition and AO fluence, and it reached as low as 7.7% that of pristine polyimide when HBPSi addition was 29.7 wt % after 22 h AO exposure. Surface morphologies confirmed that pristine polyimide was significantly roughened after AO exposure while HBPSi polyimide had even less rough surface topography. During exposure of HBPSi polyimide to AO, the organic polyimide of the surface was first degraded and a silica protective layer eventually formed, which enabled the surface to be "self-healing". It is this passivation layer that prevents the underlying polymer from additional erosion. The whole preparation process of HBPSi polyimide is moderate, low-cost, environmentally friendly, and suitable for industrialized mass production, which contributes this novel material to a "drop-in" replacement for the widely used Kapton on spacecrafts functioning in space environment.

Interactions between Nafion resin and protonated dodecylamine modified montmorillonite: A solid state NMR study

A series of nanocomposites have been prepared from perfluorosulfonylfluoride copolymer resin (Nafion) and layered montmorillonite (MMT) modified with protonated dodecylamine by conventional sol-gel intercalation. The structure of these nanocomposite materials have been characterized using FT-IR, elemental analysis, XRD and solid state NMR techniques, including 19F magic-angle spinning (MAS) NMR, 19F NMR relaxation time measurements, 29Si MAS, 1H MAS, 1H-13C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning (CPMAS), and 1H-13C heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) 2D NMR. The results showed that thermal stability of Nafion was improved moderately by the addition of dodecylamine modified MMT without intercalation. FT-IR and 29Si MAS NMR results indicated that dodecylamine modification did not result in obvious changes in the MMT lattice structure. The XRD results showed that the protonated dodecylamine has been embedded and intercalated into the MMT interlayers, whereas Nafion was not. Elemental analysis results also suggested that some dodecylamine was adsorbed on the surface of MMT. 1H-13C HETCOR 2D NMR experiment clearly indicated that strong electrostatic interactions were present between the NH+3 group of dodecylamine and the fluorine-containing groups (CF3, OCF2, and SCF2) of Nafion resin. Such electrostatic interactions are probably the major contributors for the improved thermal stability of the resultant composite materials.

Studies of interactions between silane coupling agents and cellulose fibers with liquid and solid-state NMR

The hydrolysis of three alkoxy-silane coupling agents, gamma-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxy silane (MPS), gamma-aminopropyl triethoxy silane (APS), and gamma-diethylenetriaminopropyl trimethoxy silane (TAS), was carried out in ethanol/water solutions (80/20 w/w) at different pH values and followed by 1H, 13C and 29Si NMR spectroscopy. Acidic media were found to stabilize the hydrolyzed forms. As expected, the formation of silanol groups was followed by their self-condensation to generate oligomeric structures, yielding, ultimately, solid homopolycondensated structures, as analyzed by 29Si and 13C high-resolution solid-state NMR. Hydrolyzed MPS in acidic media was then successfully adsorbed onto a cellulose surface and the ensuing substrates submitted to thermal treatment at 110-120 degrees C under reduced pressure, in order to create covalent bonds between cellulose and the coupling agent.

Silane adsorption onto cellulose fibers: Hydrolysis and condensation reactions

The hydrolysis of three alkoxysilane coupling agents, gamma-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS), gamma-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS), and gamma-diethylenetriaminopropyltrimethoxysilane (TAS), was carried out in an ethanol/water (80/20) solution and followed by 1H, 13C, and 29Si NMR spectroscopy, which showed that its rate increased in the order MPS < APS < TAS. The formation of the silanol groups was followed by their self-condensation to generate oligomeric structure. APS and MPS only gave soluble products, whereas colloidal particles precipitated in the medium when TAS was hydrolyzed. Pristine and hydrolyzed MPS were then adsorbed onto a cellulose substrate and thereafter a thermal treatment at 110-120 degrees C under reduced pressure was applied to the modified fibers to create permanent bonding of the coupling agent at their surface.

Nanostructured hybrid materials from aqueous polymer dispersions

Organic-inorganic (O-I) hybrids with well-defined morphology and structure controlled at the nanometric scale represent a very interesting class of materials both for their use as biomimetic composites and because of their potential use in a wide range of technologically advanced as well as more conventional application fields. Their unique features can be exploited or their role envisaged as components of electronic and optoelectronic devices, in controlled release and bioencapsulation, as active substrates for chromatographic separation and catalysis, as nanofillers for composite films in packaging and coating, in nanowriting and nanolithography, etc. A synergistic combination or totally new properties with respect to the two components of the hybrid can arise from nanostructuration, achieved by surface modification of nanostructures, self-assembling or simply heterophase dispersion. In fact, owing to the extremely large total surface area associated with the resulting morphologies, the interfacial interactions can deeply modify the bulk properties of each component. A wide range of starting materials and of production processes have been studied in recent years for the controlled synthesis and characterization of hybrid nanostructures, from nanoparticle or lamellar dispersions to mesoporous materials obtained from templating nanoparticle dispersions in a continuous, e.g. ceramic precursor, matrix. This review is aimed at giving some basic definitions of what is intended as a hybrid (O-I) material and what are the main synthetic routes available. The various methods for preparing hybrid nanostructures and, among them, inorganic-organic or O-I core-shell nanoparticles, are critically analyzed and classified based on the reaction medium (aqueous, non-aqueous), and on the role it plays in directing the final morphology. Particular attention is devoted to aqueous systems and water-borne dispersions which, in addition to being environmentally more acceptable or even a mandatory choice for any future development of large output applications (e.g. in paint, ink and coating industry), can provide the thermodynamic drive for self-assembling of amphiphilics, adsorption onto colloidal particles or partitioning of the hybrid's precursors between dispersed nanosized reaction loci, as in emulsion or miniemulsion free-radical polymerization. While nanoencapsulation and self-assembling processes are already exploited as commercially viable fabrication methods, a newly developed technique based on two-stage sol-gel and free-radical emulsion polymerization is described, which can grant a versatile synthetic approach to hybrid O-I nanoparticles with tailor-made composition of both the organic core and the silica or organosilica shell, and good control on morphology, size and heterophase structure in the 50-500 nm range. Styrene or acrylate homo- and copolymer core latex particles need to be modified with a reactive comonomer, such as trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate, to achieve efficient interfacial coupling with the inorganic shell. Accurate control over pH and process conditions is required to avoid latex coagulation or, in case of organic particles with uniform composition, incipient intraparticle crosslinking.

High-sensitivity multinuclear NMR spectroscopy of a smectite clay and of clay-intercalated polymer

The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) properties of a smectite clay low in paramagnetic ions, and NMR experiments to detect organic material near the silicate surfaces with high sensitivity, have been explored by 1H, 29Si, and 13C NMR. In oven-dried hectorite clay, 1H NMR reveals a sharp signal at 0.35 ppm that narrows significantly with spinning speed. It is assigned to the "inner" OH protons of the silicate layers. In fluorohectorite, where the OH groups are replaced by fluorines, no such 1H peak is observed. The assignment is further confirmed by the efficient cross-polarization observed in two-dimensional (2D) 1H-29Si HETCOR spectra, and by 29Si-detected REDOR experiments with 1H-dephasing in the 29Si dipolar field, which yield a 1H-29Si distance of 2.9 + 0.4 A. In these 1H-29Si experiments, the sensitivity of the 29Si signal is enhanced at least fivefold by refocusing the decay resulting from the inhomogeneous broadening of the single 29Si peak, stretching the 29Si signal out over 80 ms. The small 1H linewidth of this signal at spinning frequencies exceeding 4 kHz is attributed to the large proton-proton distances in the clay. The upfield isotropic chemical shift of the OH groups is explained by their inaccessibility to hydrogen-bonding partners, as a result of their location in hexagonal "cavities" of the clay structure. The well-resolved, easily selectable OH-proton signal and the high-sensitivity 29Si detection open excellent perspectives for NMR studies of composites of clays with organic molecules. Two-dimensional 1H-29Si and 1H-1H chemical-shift correlation experiments enable efficient detection of the 1H spectrum of organic segments near the clay surface. Combined with 1H spin diffusion, the organic segments at up to several nanometers from the clay surfaces can be probed. A 2D 1H-13C correlation experiment yields the 13C spectrum of the organic species near the clay surfaces. A mobility gradient of intercalated poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, segments is proven in 1H-3Si WISE experiments with spin diffusion.
