Abstract
A library of star-shaped 2H-imidazolines has been synthesized via Debus-Radziszewski condensation from 1,2-diketones and ketone starting materials. Selective reduction of one imine group of the 2H-imidazole intermediate with LiAlH4 or catalytic flow hydrogenation furnished 2H-imidazolines, which could be conveniently diversified by reacting the amine N with electrophiles, resulting in a set of 21 amide-, carbamate-, urea-, and allylamine-containing products. In total, five points of diversification could be used, which allow the production of a set of functionally diverse compounds. The synthesis of acylated 2H-imidazolidines resulted in intrinsically labile compounds, which spontaneously degraded to acyclic derivatives, as shown for the reaction of 2H-imidazolidine with hexylisocyanate.

Abstract
The use of carbonyl-stabilised ammonium ylides to access chiral glycidic amides and the corresponding aziridines has so far been limited to racemic trans-selective protocols. We herein report the development of an asymmetric approach to access such compounds with high levels of stereoselectivity using easily accessible chiral auxiliary-based ammonium ylides. The use of phenylglycinol as the chiral auxiliary was found to be superior to Evans or pseudoephedrine-based auxiliaries resulting in good to excellent stereoselectivities in both, epoxidation and aziridination reactions.

Abstract
This critical review, which is relevant to researchers in synthetic organic chemistry, focuses on asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions with acrylamides. The use of chiral acrylamides as dipolarophiles leads to high levels of stereocontrol, due to conformational constraint in the acrylamides. Employment of chiral tertiary acrylamides containing nitrogen heterocycles is particularly effective in controlling the stereoselectivity. Following a general overview of 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions, the main body of the review focuses on asymmetric 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions of acrylamides with nitrile oxides, nitrones, diazoalkanes and azomethine ylides, with particular emphasis on the rationale for the observed stereocontrol (215 references).

Abstract
Reported herein is a novel approach to the total syntheses of (-)-alpha-kainic acid and (+)-alpha-allokainic acid, where the stereochemistries on C(2), C(3), and C(4) of the pyrrolidine core were introduced efficiently and selectively. A regio- and stereoselective C-H insertion reaction was utilized to prepare the gamma-lactam as an intermediate. A Michael-type cyclization of phenylsulfone with a conjugated acetylenic ketone was developed to prepare the tricyclic ketone as a key intermediate for (-)-alpha-kainic acid. Subsequently, a stereoselective dephenylsulfonylation was carried out successfully to secure the cis relationship at C(3) and C(4) centers. An unprecedented acetylation on the phenylsulfone, followed by a stereoselective dephenylsulfonylation, secured the trans relationship at C(3) and C(4) centers in (+)-alpha-allokainic acid.

Abstract
[reaction: see text] Regio- and stereoselective allylation of pyridinium and quinolinium salts was performed by the addition of allylindium and allyltributyltin reagents toward intermediary cation-pi complexes. The reaction with allylindium and allyltributyltin reagents afforded a 1,2-adduct, whereas the addition of a prenylindium reagent gave a 1,4-adduct with good regio- and stereoselectivities. X-ray structural analysis, 1H NMR studies, and DFT calculations elucidated the intermediary cation-pi complex formation with face-to-face orientation.

Abstract
We have evaluated the role of achiral pyrazolidinone templates in conjunction with chiral Lewis acids in room temperature, enantioselective Diels-Alder cycloadditions. The role of the fluxional N(1) substituent was examined, with the bulky 1-naphthylmethyl group providing enantioselectivities up to 99% ee, while templates with smaller fluxional groups gave lower selectivities. High selectivities were also observed in reactions of 7d with chiral Lewis acids derived from relatively small chiral ligands, suggesting the pyrazolidinone templates are capable of relaying stereochemical information from the ligand to the reaction center. Lewis acids capable of adapting square planar geometries, such as Cu(OTf)2, Cu(ClO4)2, and Pd(ClO4)2, were found to be particularly effective at providing high selectivities. Additionally, substitution at the C-5 position of the pyrazolidinone templates has been shown to be critical for optimal selectivity. Reactions of the optimal pyrazolidinone appended with a number of common dienophiles and various dienes demonstrate the utility of this achiral template. Furthermore, catalytic loadings could be lowered to 2.5 mol % with essentially no loss in selectivity. Pi-Pi interactions were evaluated as a means to explain the unusually high selectivity observed at room temperature. Finally, non-C2-symmetric ligands were employed as a test to determine if chiral relay was operative.

Abstract
The development of a new class of chiral 4-N,N-dialkylaminopyridine acyl-transfer catalysts capable of exploiting both van der Waals (pi) and H-bonding interactions to allow remote chiral information to stereochemically control the kinetic resolution of sec-alcohols with moderate to excellent selectivity (s = 6-30). Catalysts derived from (S)-alpha,alpha-diarylprolinol are considerably superior to analogues devoid of a tertiary hydroxyl moiety and possess high activity and selectivity across a broad range of substrates.
