Electroactive Nanomaterials for the Prevention and Treatment of Heart Failure: From Materials and Mechanisms to Applications

Heart failure (HF) represents a cardiovascular disease that significantly threatens global well-being and quality of life. Electroactive nanomaterials, characterized by their distinctive physical and chemical properties, emerge as promising candidates for HF prevention and management. This review comprehensively examines electroactive nanomaterials and their applications in HF intervention. It presents the definition, classification, and intrinsic characteristics of conductive, piezoelectric, and triboelectric nanomaterials, emphasizing their mechanical robustness, electrical conductivity, and piezoelectric coefficients. The review elucidates their applications and mechanisms: 1) early detection and diagnosis, employing nanomaterial-based sensors for real-time cardiac health monitoring; 2) cardiac tissue repair and regeneration, providing mechanical, chemical, and electrical stimuli for tissue restoration; 3) localized administration of bioactive biomolecules, genes, or pharmacotherapeutic agents, using nanomaterials as advanced drug delivery systems; and 4) electrical stimulation therapies, leveraging their properties for innovative pacemaker and neurostimulation technologies. Challenges in clinical translation, such as biocompatibility, stability, and scalability, are discussed, along with future prospects and potential innovations, including multifunctional and stimuli-responsive nanomaterials for precise HF therapies. This review encapsulates current research and future directions concerning the use of electroactive nanomaterials in HF prevention and management, highlighting their potential to innovating in cardiovascular medicine.

Tuning (Photo)Electronic Properties of an Electron Deficient Porous Polymer via n-Doping with Tetrathiafulvalene

Charge-transfer complex formation within the pores of porous polymers is an efficient way to tune their electronical properties. Introduction of electron accepting guests to the electron donating hosts to conduct their p-doping is intensively studied in this context. However, the vice versa scenario, n-doping by treating the electron deficient (i.e., n-type) porous polymers with electron donating dopants, is rare. In this work, synthesis of an n-type phenazine based conjugated microporous polymer and its exposure to strong electron donating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) dopants are presented. The fundamental physical characterizations (e.g., elemental analysis, gas sorption) showed that the vacuum impregnation technique is a good approach to load the guest molecules inside the pores. Moreover, the formation of charge-transfer complexes between the phenazine building blocks of the polymeric network and TTF dopants are confirmed via spectral techniques such Fourier transform infra-red, UV-vis, steady-state/time-resolved photoluminescence, and transient absorbance spectroscopies. Effect of the doping to the electronical properties is monitored by employing photoelectrochemical measurements, which showed lower charge-transfer resistivity and nearly doubled photocurrents after the doping. The study is, therefore, an important advancement for the applicability of (n-type) porous polymeric materials in the field of photo(electro)catalysis and organic electronics.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Quantum Dots (g-C3N4 QDs): From Chemistry to Applications

Since their emergence in 2014, graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (g-C3N4 QDs) have attracted much interest from the scientific community due to their distinctive physicochemical features, including structural, morphological, electrochemical, and optoelectronic properties. Owing to their desirable characteristics, such as non-zero band gap, ability to be chemically functionalized or doped, possessing tunable properties, outstanding dispersibility in different media, and biocompatibility, g-C3N4 QDs have shown promise for photocatalysis, energy devices, sensing, bioimaging, solar cells, optoelectronics, among other applications. As these fields are rapidly evolving, it is very strenuous to pinpoint the emerging challenges of the g-C3N4 QDs development and application during the last decade, mainly due to the lack of critical reviews of the innovations in the g-C3N4 QDs synthesis pathways and domains of application. Herein, an extensive survey is conducted on the g-C3N4 QDs synthesis, characterization, and applications. Scenarios for the future development of g-C3N4 QDs and their potential applications are highlighted and discussed in detail. The provided critical section suggests a myriad of opportunities for g-C3N4 QDs, especially for their synthesis and functionalization, where a combination of eco-friendly/single step synthesis and chemical modification may be used to prepare g-C3N4 QDs with, for example, enhanced photoluminescence and production yields.

Bidirectional thermo-regulating hydrogel composite for autonomic thermal homeostasis

Thermal homeostasis is an essential physiological function for preserving the optimal state of complex organs within the human body. Inspired by this function, here, we introduce an autonomous thermal homeostatic hydrogel that includes infrared wave reflecting and absorbing materials for improved heat trapping at low temperatures, and a porous structure for enhanced evaporative cooling at high temperatures. Moreover, an optimized auxetic pattern was designed as a heat valve to further amplify heat release at high temperatures. This homeostatic hydrogel provides effective bidirectional thermoregulation with deviations of 5.04 °C ± 0.55 °C and 5.85 °C ± 0.46 °C from the normal body temperature of 36.5 °C, when the external temperatures are 5 °C and 50 °C, respectively. The autonomous thermoregulatory characteristics of our hydrogel may provide a simple solution to people suffering from autonomic nervous system disorders and soft robotics that are susceptible to sudden temperature fluctuations.

Nanostructured Polyaniline Films Functionalized through Auxiliary Nitrogen Addition in Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Polymerization

Polyaniline (PANI) was synthesized from liquid aniline, a nitrogen-containing aromatic compound, through the atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma process using a newly designed plasma jet array with wide spacing between plasma jets. To expand the area of the polymerized film, the newly proposed plasma jet array comprises three AP plasma jet devices spaced 7 mm apart in a triangular configuration and an electrodeless quartz tube capable of applying auxiliary gas in the center of the triangular plasma jets. The vaporized aniline monomer was synthesized into a PANI film using the proposed plasma array device. The effects of nitrogen gas addition on the morphological, chemical, and electrical properties of PANI films in AP argon plasma polymerization were examined. The iodine-doped PANI film was isolated from the atmosphere through encapsulation. The constant electrical resistance of the PANI film indicates that the conductive PANI film can achieve the desired resistance by controlling the atmospheric exposure time through encapsulation.

Monitoring vibronic coherences and molecular aromaticity in photoexcited cyclooctatetraene with an X-ray probe: a simulation study

Understanding conical intersection (CI) dynamics and subsequent conformational changes is key for exploring and controlling photo-reactions in aromatic molecules. Monitoring of their time-resolved dynamics remains a formidable experimental challenge. In this study, we simulate the photoinduced S3 to S1 non-adiabatic dynamics of cyclooctatetraene (COT), involving multiple CIs with relaxation times in good agreement with experiment. We further investigate the possibility to directly probe the CI passages in COT by off-resonant X-ray Raman spectroscopy (TRUECARS) and time-resolved X-ray diffraction (TRXD). We find that these signals sensitively monitor key chemical features during the ultrafast dynamics. First, we distinguish two CIs by using TRUECARS signals with their appearances at different Raman shifts. Second, we demonstrate that TRXD, where X-ray photons scatter off electron densities, can resolve ultrafast changes in the aromaticity of COT. It can further distinguish between planar and non-planar geometries explored during the dynamics, as e.g. two different tetraradical-type CIs. The knowledge gained from these measurements can give unique insight into fundamental chemical properties that dynamically change during non-adiabatic passages.

Advances in polymer-based detection of environmental ibuprofen in wastewater

Globally, ibuprofen is the third most consumed drug and its presence in the environment is a concern because little is known about its adverse effects on humans and aquatic life. Environmentalists have made monitoring and the detection of ibuprofen in biological and environmental matrices a priority. For the detection and monitoring of ibuprofen, sensors and biosensors have provided rapid analysis time, sensitivity, high-throughput screening, and real-time analysis. Researchers are increasingly seeking eco-friendly technology, and this has led to an interest in developing biodegradable, bioavailable, and non-toxic sensors, or biosensors. The integration of polymers into sensor systems has proven to significantly improve sensitivity, selectivity, and stability and minimize sample preparation using bioavailable and biodegradable polymers. This review provides a general overview of perspectives and trends of polymer-based sensors and biosensors for the detection of ibuprofen compared to non-polymer-based sensors.

Hussein A. A Mini Review on the Development of Conjugated Polymers: Steps towards the Commercialization of Organic Solar Cells

This review article covers the synthesis and design of conjugated polymers for carefully adjusting energy levels and energy band gap (EBG) to achieve the desired photovoltaic performance. The formation of bonds and the delocalization of electrons over conjugated chains are both explained by the molecular orbital theory (MOT). The intrinsic characteristics that classify conjugated polymers as semiconducting materials come from the EBG of organic molecules. A quinoid mesomeric structure (D-A ↔ D⁺ = A^-) forms across the major backbones of the polymer as a result of alternating donor-acceptor segments contributing to the pull-push driving force between neighboring units, resulting in a smaller optical EBG. Furthermore, one of the most crucial factors in achieving excellent performance of the polymer is improving the morphology of the active layer. In order to improve exciton diffusion, dissociation, and charge transport, the nanoscale morphology ensures nanometer phase separation between donor and acceptor components in the active layer. It was demonstrated that because of the exciton's short lifetime, only small diffusion distances (10-20 nm) are needed for all photo-generated excitons to reach the interfacial region where they can separate into free charge carriers. There is a comprehensive explanation of the architecture of organic solar cells using single layer, bilayer, and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) devices. The short circuit current density (J_sc), open circuit voltage (V_oc), and fill factor (FF) all have a significant impact on the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). Since the BHJ concept was first proposed, significant advancement and quick configuration development of these devices have been accomplished. Due to their ability to combine great optical and electronic properties with strong thermal and chemical stability, conjugated polymers are unique semiconducting materials that are used in a wide range of applications. According to the fundamental operating theories of OSCs, unlike inorganic semiconductors such as silicon solar cells, organic photovoltaic devices are unable to produce free carrier charges (holes and electrons). To overcome the Coulombic attraction and separate the excitons into free charges in the interfacial region, organic semiconductors require an additional thermodynamic driving force. From the molecular engineering of conjugated polymers, it was discovered that the most crucial obstacles to achieving the most desirable properties are the design and synthesis of conjugated polymers toward optimal p-type materials. Along with plastic solar cells (PSCs), these materials have extended to a number of different applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and field-effect transistors (FETs). Additionally, the topics of fluorene and carbazole as donor units in conjugated polymers are covered. The Stille, Suzuki, and Sonogashira coupling reactions widely used to synthesize alternating D-A copolymers are also presented. Moreover, conjugated polymers based on anthracene that can be used in solar cells are covered.

Polymer Gel with Tunable Conductive Properties: A Material for Thermal Energy Harvesting

The spontaneous gelation of poly(4-vinyl pyridine)/pyridine solution produces materials with conductive properties that are suitable for various energy conversion technologies. The gel is a thermoelectric material with a conductivity of 2.2-5.0 × 10^-6 S m^-1 and dielectric constant ε = 11.3. On the molecular scale, the gel contains various types of hydrogen bonding, which are formed via self-protonation of the pyridine side chains. Our measurements and calculations revealed that the gelation process produces bias-dependent polymer complexes: quasi-symmetric, strongly hydrogen-bonded species, and weakly bound protonated structures. Under an applied DC bias, the gelled complexes differ in their capacitance/conductive characteristics. In this work, we exploited the bias-responsive characteristics of poly(4-vinyl pyridine) gelled complexes to develop a prototype of a thermal energy harvesting device. The measured device efficiency is S = ΔV/ΔT = 0.18 mV/K within the temperature range of 296-360 K. Investigation of the mechanism underlying the conversion of thermal energy into electric charge showed that the heat-controlled proton diffusion (the Soret effect) produces thermogalvanic redox reactions of hydrogen ions on the anode. The charge can be stored in an external capacitor for heat energy harvesting. These results advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying thermal energy conversion in the poly(4-vinyl pyridine)/pyridine gel. A device prototype, enabling thermal energy harvesting, successfully demonstrates a simple path toward the development of inexpensive, low-energy thermoelectric generators.

Recent advances in developing high-performance organic hole transporting materials for inverted perovskite solar cells

Inverted perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) have recently made exciting progress, showing high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 25% in single-junction devices and 30.5% in silicon/perovskite tandem devices. The hole transporting material (HTM) in an inverted PVSC plays an important role in determining the device performance, since it not only extracts/transports holes but also affects the growth and crystallization of perovskite film. Currently, polymer and self-assembled monolayer (SAM) have been considered as two types of most promising HTM candidates for inverted PVSCs owing to their high PCEs, high stability and adaptability to large area devices. In this review, recent encouraging progress of high-performance polymer and SAM-based HTMs is systematically reviewed and summarized, including molecular design strategies and the correlation between molecular structure and device performance. We hope this review can inspire further innovative development of HTMs for wide applications in highly efficient and stable inverted PVSCs and the tandem devices.

Natural Glycyrrhizic Acid-Tailored Homogeneous Conductive Polyaniline Hydrogel as a Flexible Strain Sensor

Polyaniline (PANi) hydrogels often exhibit highly mechanical and electrochemical properties, which have received extensive attention in the fields of batteries, supercapacitors, and sensors. However, the shortcomings such as hydrophobicity and easy aggregation of PANi frequently result in deterioration of mechanical and electrochemical performance of PANi hydrogels. Here, a bifunctional natural product, glycyrrhizic acid (GL), is utilized to prepare the homogeneous conductive PANi hydrogel, because GL not only can assemble into supramolecular hydrogel as the biocompatible matrix but also can salinize aniline monomers to facilitate the polymerization in situ to form uniformly dispersed PANi within GL matrix. Accordingly, the resulting GL/PANi hydrogel shows the Tyndall effect caused by the nanoclusters entangled by nanofibers and exhibits an improved storage modulus G' (3.2 kPa) and loss modulus G″ (0.9 kPa), as well as the expected conductivity (0.17 S·m^-1). In addition, the GL/PANi hydrogel is further reinforced by blending poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for the required strength and stretchability as a flexible strain sensor. The results reveal that the obtained PVA/GL/PANi hydrogel has a fracture stress of 693 kPa at an elongation of 329%, with a fracture toughness of 82 MJ·m^-3 and Young's modulus of 47.9 kPa. Its gauge factor (GF) is measured to be 2.5 at lower strain (<130%) and up to 4.3 at larger strain (>130%). This good sensitivity and sensing stability make the PVA/GL/PANi hydrogel effectively monitor relevant human motion detections. Our work provides an innovative strategy to manufacture the homogeneous conductive PANi hydrogel for high-performance soft electronic devices.

Highly Selective Recovery of Phosphorus from Wastewater via Capacitive Deionization Enabled by Ferrocene-polyaniline-Functionalized Carbon Nanotube Electrodes

While capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising technology for the recovery of nutrients from wastewater, a selective recovery of phosphate from the wastewater containing high concentrations of competing ions is still a huge challenge. Herein, we reported a ferrocene-polyaniline-functionalized carbon nanotube (Fc-PANI/CNT) electrode prepared through amidation reaction and chemical oxidation polymerization, aiming for a highly selective recovery of phosphorus from wastewater. The Fc-PANI/CNT electrode with a unique structure and high conductivity could efficiently adsorb phosphate ions from complex synthetic wastewater with a nearly 100% selectivity, mainly because the integration of ferrocene and an amide bond in Fc-PANI resulted in an enhanced charge transfer (Faradaic reactions) and a strong hydrogen bonding interaction with phosphate ions in its oxidized state. Density functional theory calculations showed that the binding energies of the oxidized Fc-PANI with HPO₄^2- and H₂PO₄^- were much greater than those of the oxidized Fc-PANI with other competing anions. The affinity of Fc-PANI/CNTs with phosphate can be controlled electrochemically based on the synergetic effects of Faradaic reactions and hydrogen bonding, enabling a selective recovery of phosphate through charging/discharging cycles. The phosphate adsorption capacity reached up to 35 mg PO₄^3- g^-1 in a NaCl/Na₂SO₄/NaNO₃/NaH₂PO₄ complex mixture at 1.2 V, outperforming most of the other reported CDI systems. The Fc-PANI/CNT electrode also exhibited a decent regeneration ability and durability during repeated CDI tests, demonstrating a great potential for the application of selective recovery and enrichment of phosphate from wastewater.

π-Conjugated Polymers and Their Application in Organic and Hybrid Organic-Silicon Solar Cells

The evolution and emergence of organic solar cells and hybrid organic-silicon heterojunction solar cells have been deemed as promising sustainable future technologies, owing to the use of π-conjugated polymers. In this regard, the scope of this review article presents a comprehensive summary of the applications of π-conjugated polymers as hole transporting layers (HTLs) or emitters in both organic solar cells and organic-silicon hybrid heterojunction solar cells. The different techniques used to synthesize these polymers are discussed in detail, including their electronic band structure and doping mechanisms. The general architecture and principle of operating heterojunction solar cells is addressed. In both discussed solar cell types, incorporation of π-conjugated polymers as HTLs have seen a dramatic increase in efficiencies attained by these devices, owing to the high transmittance in the visible to near-infrared region, reduced carrier recombination, high conductivity, and high hole mobilities possessed by the p-type polymeric materials. However, these cells suffer from long-term stability due to photo-oxidation and parasitic absorptions at the anode interface that results in total degradation of the polymeric p-type materials. Although great progress has been seen in the incorporation of conjugated polymers in the various solar cell types, there is still a long way to go for cells incorporating polymeric materials to realize commercialization and large-scale industrial production due to the shortcomings in the stability of the polymers. This review therefore discusses the progress in using polymeric materials as HTLs in organic solar cells and hybrid organic-silicon heterojunction solar cells with the intention to provide insight on the quest of producing highly efficient but less expensive solar cells.

Revised Manuscript with Corrections: Polyurethane-Based Conductive Composites: From Synthesis to Applications

The purpose of this review article is to outline the extended applications of polyurethane (PU)-based nanocomposites incorporated with conductive polymeric particles as well as to condense an outline on the chemistry and fabrication of polyurethanes (PUs). Additionally, we discuss related research trends of PU-based conducting materials for EMI shielding, sensors, coating, films, and foams, in particular those from the past 10 years. PU is generally an electrical insulator and behaves as a dielectric material. The electrical conductivity of PU is imparted by the addition of metal nanoparticles, and increases with the enhancing aspect ratio and ordering in structure, as happens in the case of conducting polymer fibrils or reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Nanocomposites with good electrical conductivity exhibit noticeable changes based on the remarkable electric properties of nanomaterials such as graphene, RGO, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Recently, conducting polymers, including PANI, PPY, PTh, and their derivatives, have been popularly engaged as incorporated fillers into PU substrates. This review also discusses additional challenges and future-oriented perspectives combined with here-and-now practicableness.

The influence of physicochemical properties on the processibility of conducting polymers: A bioelectronics perspective

Conducting polymers (CPs) possess unique electrical and electrochemical properties and hold great potential for different applications in the field of bioelectronics. However, the widespread implementation of CPs in this field has been critically hindered by their poor processibility. There are four key elements that determine the processibility of CPs, which are thermal tunability, chemical stability, solvent compatibility and mechanical robustness. Recent research efforts have focused on enhancing the processibility of these materials through pre- or post-synthesis chemical modifications, the fabrication of CP-based complexes and composites, and the adoption of additive manufacturing techniques. In this review, the physicochemical and structural properties that underlie the performance and processibility of CPs are examined. In addition, current research efforts to overcome technical limitations and broaden the potential applications of CPs in bioelectronics are discussed. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This review details the inherent properties of CPs that have hindered their use in additive manufacturing for the creation of 3D bioelectronics. A fundamental approach is presented with consideration of the chemical structure and how this contributes to their electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. The review then considers how manipulation of these properties has been addressed in the literature including areas where improvements can be made. Finally, the review details the use of CPs in additive manufacturing and the future scope for the use of CPs and their composites in the development of 3D bioelectronics.

Au nanoparticles decorated polypyrrole-carbon black/g-C3N4 nanocomposite as ultrafast and efficient visible light photocatalyst

Modification and bandgap engineering are proposed to be extremely significant in improving the photocatalytic activity of novel photocatalysts. The current research focused on the fabrication of ultrafast and efficient visible light-responsive ternary photocatalyst containing g-C₃N₄ nanostructures in conjugation with polypyrrole doped carbon black (PPy-C) and gold (Au) nanoparticles by highly effectual, simple, and straightforward methodology. Various analytical techniques like XRD, FESEM, TEM, XPS, FTIR, and UV-Vis spectroscopy were applied for characterization purposes. The XRD and XPS results confirmed the successful creation of a nanocomposite framework among Au, PPy-C and g-C₃N₄. The TEM images revealed that bare g-C₃N₄ holds sheets or layered graphitic structure with sizes ranging from 100 to 300 nm. The sponge-like PPy-C network intermingled perfectly with g-C₃N₄ sheets along with homogeneously distributed 5-15 nm Au nanoparticles. The band gap energy (E_g) for bare g-C₃N₄, PPy-C/g-C₃N₄ and Au@PPy-C/g-C₃N₄ nanocomposites were found to be 2.74, 2.68, and 2.60 eV, respectively. The photocatalytic activity for all newly designed photocatalysts have been assessed during the degradation of insecticide Imidacloprid and methylene blue (MB) dye, where Au@PPy-C/C₃N₄ was found to be extremely efficient with ultrafast removal of both imidacloprid and MB in just 25 min of visible light irradiation. It was revealed that the Au@PPy-C/g-C₃N₄ ternary photocatalyst removed 96.0% of target analyte imidacloprid, which is ⁓ 2.91 times more efficient than bare g-C₃N₄ in treating imidacloprid. This report provides a distinctly promising, highly effectual and straightforward route to destruct extremely toxic and notorious pollutants and opens a new gateway in the present challenging scenario of environmental concerns.

Improvement of Nanostructured Polythiophene Film Uniformity Using a Cruciform Electrode and Substrate Rotation in Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Polymerization

In atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma polymerization, increasing the effective volume of the plasma medium by expanding the plasma-generating region within the plasma reactor is considered a simple method to create regular and uniform polymer films. Here, we propose a newly designed AP plasma reactor with a cruciform wire electrode that can expand the discharge volume. Based on the plasma vessel configuration, which consists of a wide tube and a substrate stand, two tungsten wires crossed at 90 degrees are used as a common powered electrode in consideration of two-dimensional spatial expansion. In the wire electrode, which is partially covered by a glass capillary, discharge occurs at the boundary where the capillary terminates, so that the discharge region is divided into fourths along the cruciform electrode and the discharge volume can successfully expand. It is confirmed that although a discharge imbalance in the four regions of the AP plasma reactor can adversely affect the uniformity of the polymerized, nanostructured polymer film, rotating the substrate using a turntable can significantly improve the film uniformity. With this AP plasma reactor, nanostructured polythiophene (PTh) films are synthesized and the morphology and chemical properties of the PTh nanostructure, as well as the PTh-film uniformity and electrical properties, are investigated in detail.

Improvement of the Uniformity and Electrical Properties of Polyaniline Nanocomposite Film by Addition of Auxiliary Gases during Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Polymerization

The morphological and chemical properties of polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite films after adding small amounts of auxiliary gases such as argon, nitrogen, and oxygen during atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma polymerization are investigated in detail. A separate gas-supply line for applying an auxiliary gas is added to the AP plasma polymerization system to avoid plasma instability due to the addition of auxiliary gas during polymerization. A small amount of neutral gas species in the plasma medium can reduce the reactivity of monomers hyperactivated by high plasma energy and prevent excessive crosslinking, thereby obtaining a uniform and regular PANI nanocomposite film. The addition of small amounts of argon or nitrogen during polymerization significantly improves the uniformity and regularity of PANI nanocomposite films, whereas the addition of oxygen weakens them. In particular, the PANI film synthesized by adding a small amount of nitrogen has the best initial electrical resistance and resistance changing behavior with time after the ex situ iodine (I₂)-doping process compared with other auxiliary gases. In addition, it is experimentally demonstrated that the electrical conductivity of the ex situ I₂-doped PANI film can be preserved for a long time by isolating it from the atmosphere.

Graphene Loading with Polypyrrole Nanoparticles for Trace-Level Detection of Ammonia at Room Temperature

The outstanding versatility of graphene for surface functionalization has been exploited by its decoration with synthesized polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles (NPs). A green, facile, and easily scalable for mass production nanocomposite development was proposed, and the resulting PPy@Graphene was implemented in chemoresistive gas sensors able to detect trace levels of ammonia (NH₃) under room-temperature conditions. Gas exposure for 5 min revealed that the presence of nanoparticles decorating graphene entail greater sensitivity (13-fold) in comparison to the bare graphene performance. Noteworthy, excellent repeatability (0.7% of relative error) and a low limit of detection of 491 ppb were obtained, together with excellent long-term stability. Besides, an extensive material characterization was conducted, and vibration bands obtained via Raman spectroscopy confirmed the formation of PPy NPs, while X-ray spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the relative abundance of the different species, as polarons and bipolarons. Additionally, XPS analyses were conducted before and after NH₃ exposure to assess the PPy aging and the changes induced in their physicochemical and electronic properties. Specifically, the gas sensor was tested during a 5-month period, demonstrating significant stability over time, since just a slight decrease (11%) in the responses was registered. In summary, the present work reports for the first time the use of PPy NPs decorating graphene for gas-sensing purposes, revealing promising properties for the development of unattended gas-sensing networks for monitoring air quality.

Effect of Protonation on Optical and Electrochemical Properties of Thiophene-Phenylene-Based Schiff Bases with Alkoxy Side Groups

Three polyazomethines and their corresponding model compounds were protonated with trifluoroacetic acid, and its effect on their optical (UV–vis absorption and photoluminescence) properties and electrochemical behavior has been studied, in the context of the presence and elongation of alkoxy side groups. Moreover, the effect of environment dielectric constants (i.e., polarity of the solvent) was considered on the doping process. It has been proven that the presence of alkoxy side groups is necessary for protonation to occur, while unsubstituted compounds undergo hydrolysis to constitutive units. Acid doping of imines consisting of alkoxy side chains has resulted in a distinct bathochromic shift (>200 nm) of the low-energy absorption band. Even the length of alkyl chains has not affected the position of shifted bands; it has been observed that azomethines with smaller, methoxy side groups undergo the protonation process much faster than their octyloxy-substituted analogues, due to the absence of steric hindrance. The electrochemical studies of these alkoxy-substituted imines have indicated a better p-type behavior after protonation induced by the capability of the protonated form to easily oxidize in acetonitrile and to generate the native molecules. The environmental polarity has also had impact on the doping process, which took place only in low-polar media.

Application of quinoline derivatives in third-generation photovoltaics

Among many chemical compounds synthesized for third-generation photovoltaic applications, quinoline derivatives have recently gained popularity. This work reviews the latest developments in the quinoline derivatives (metal complexes) for applications in the photovoltaic cells. Their properties for photovoltaic applications are detailed: absorption spectra, energy levels, and other achievements presented by the authors. We have also outlined various methods for testing the compounds for application. Finally, we present the implementation of quinoline derivatives in photovoltaic cells. Their architecture and design are described, and also, the performance for polymer solar cells and dye-synthesized solar cells was highlighted. We have described their performance and characteristics. We have also pointed out other, non-photovoltaic applications for quinoline derivatives. It has been demonstrated and described that quinoline derivatives are good materials for the emission layer of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and are also used in transistors. The compounds are also being considered as materials for biomedical applications.

Photo-induced dissolution of Bi2O3 during photocatalysis reactions: Mechanisms and inhibition method

Photo-induced dissolution greatly limits the application of Bi₂O₃ photocatalyst in water treatment. In this study, mechanisms for the photo-induced dissolution of Bi₂O₃ were proposed. (1) Under UV light, h⁺ forms and diffuses through Bi₂O₃. (2) The h⁺, which reaches the surface of Bi₂O₃ and can be regarded as a monatomic oxygen ion (O_S^-), is weakly bonded to the crystal lattice. (3) Two O_S^- combine and the generated (O-O)^2- ionic group is oxidized by h⁺, resulting in the release of O₂ and dissolution of Bi₂O₃. However, modification of Bi₂O₃ using polyaniline (PANI) greatly inhibits Bi₂O₃ dissolution under UV. Under the PANI to Bi₂O₃ mass ratio of 1.5%, the concentration of produced Bi³⁺ significantly decreased from 2.02 to 0.27 mg/m² with a high methylene blue (MB) degradation efficiency of 98.3%, thanks to the separation of h⁺ from VB-Bi₂O₃ to HOMO-PANI. This study provided the theoretical foundation for the modification and application of Bi₂O₃ in water treatment.

A density functional theory (DFT) study of the doping effect on 4-[2-(2-N, N-dihydroxy amino thiophene) vinyl] benzenamine

In the present work, density functional theory was used at the B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP and B3PW91 levels with the 6–311 +  + G (d, p) basis set, in other to study the structural, optoelectronic, nonlinear optical, piezoelectric and thermodynamic properties of 4-[2-(2-N, N-dihydroxy amino thiophene) vinyl] benzenamine (DATVB) molecule doped with chlorine and fluorine respectively. The results obtained show that doping significantly improves the properties of this material. The materials obtained after doping 4-[2-(2-(5-(bis (chlorooxy) amino) thiophene) vinyl] benzenamine (BCATVB) and 4-[2-(2-(5-(bis (fluorooxy) amino) thiophene) vinyl] benzenamine (BFATVB) are good semiconductors because their gap energy is range between 1 and 1.5 eV which is less than 3 ev. Their first order hyperpolarizabilities ($${\beta }_{mol}$$ β mol ) are very high compared to para-nitroaniline (p-NA) known as reference molecule for nonlinear optical properties. The obtained results predisposes them as good nonlinear optical materials with applications in photonics, optical signal processing devices, dynamic imaging, data storage and computer devices. The piezoelectric and pyroelectric coefficients of the fluorinated molecule are higher than those of the reference organic molecule polyvinylidene fluoride. This led us to the conclusion that, these molecules can also be used for applications in piezoelectricity.

In-Situ Iodine Doping Characteristics of Conductive Polyaniline Film Polymerized by Low-Voltage-Driven Atmospheric Pressure Plasma

In-situ iodine (I₂)-doped atmospheric pressure (AP) plasma polymerization is proposed, based on a newly designed AP plasma reactor with a single wire electrode that enables low-voltage-driven plasma polymerization. The proposed AP plasma reactor can proceed plasma polymerization at low voltage levels, thereby enabling an effective in-situ I₂ doping process by maintaining a stable glow discharge state even if the applied voltage increases due to the use of a discharge gas containing a large amount of monomer vapors and doping materials. The results of field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) show that the polyaniline (PANI) films are successfully deposited on the silicon (Si) substrates, and that the crosslinking pattern of the synthesized nanoparticles is predominantly vertically aligned. In addition, the in-situ I₂-doped PANI film fabricated by the proposed AP plasma reactor exhibits excellent electrical resistance without electrical aging behavior. The developed AP plasma reactor proposed in this study is more advantageous for the polymerization and in-situ I₂ doping of conductive polymer films than the existing AP plasma reactor with a dielectric barrier.

Abdullah S, Brza MA. Conducting Polymers for Optoelectronic Devices and Organic Solar Cells: A Review

In this review paper, we present a comprehensive summary of the different organic solar cell (OSC) families. Pure and doped conjugated polymers are described. The band structure, electronic properties, and charge separation process in conjugated polymers are briefly described. Various techniques for the preparation of conjugated polymers are presented in detail. The applications of conductive polymers for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), organic field effect transistors (OFETs), and organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are explained thoroughly. The architecture of organic polymer solar cells including single layer, bilayer planar heterojunction, and bulk heterojunction (BHJ) are described. Moreover, designing conjugated polymers for photovoltaic applications and optimizations of highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels are discussed. Principles of bulk heterojunction polymer solar cells are addressed. Finally, strategies for band gap tuning and characteristics of solar cell are presented. In this article, several processing parameters such as the choice of solvent(s) for spin casting film, thermal and solvent annealing, solvent additive, and blend composition that affect the nano-morphology of the photoactive layer are reviewed.

Synthesis and Properties of Thiophene and Aniline Copolymer Using Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jets Copolymerization Technique

This paper investigates the properties of thiophene and aniline copolymer (TAC) films deposited by using atmospheric pressure plasma jets copolymerization technique relative to various blending ratios of aniline and thiophene monomer for synthesizing the donor–acceptor conjugated copolymers. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy are utilized to measure the surface morphology, roughness and film thickness of TAC films. Structural and chemical properties of TAC films are investigated by Fourier transforms-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. FE-SEM images show that the film thickness and nanoparticles size of the TAC films increase with an addition thiophene monomer in the aniline monomer. FE-SEM, FT-IR results show that TAC films are successfully synthesized on glass substrates in all cases. The iodine doped TAC film on the Si substrate with interdigitated electrodes shows the lowest electrical resistance at blending condition of thiophene of 25%.

Hydrothermal polymerization towards fully biobased polyazomethines

Microwave assisted polycondensation for the synthesis of (partially) biobased polyazomethines in water (hydrothermal polymerization) was investigated for the first time in this study. The polyazomethines prepared via this environmentally friendly and simple method show comparable characteristics as the polymers prepared via traditional methods in organic solvents.

Retarding Ion Exchange between Conducting Polymers and Ionic Liquids for Printable Top Electrodes in Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells

Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) are considered to be an influential tool for aesthetic and economic building-integrated photovoltaics, which can be fabricated by the printing technology. A poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and ionic liquid (IL) composite has been considered as an electrode for ST-OSCs because of its high electrical conductivity, high transparency, and printability. However, we found that the introduction of IL into the PEDOT:PSS solution for enhancing its electrical conductivity results in (1) nonreliable printing of PEDOT:PSS/IL composite films because of gradual gelation of the mixture solution and (2) the production of chemically reactive ion pairs during ion exchange between PSS and IL, which induces the oxidation of the underlying organic semiconductors during printing. To solve these problems, we developed a sequential printing method using pristine PEDOT:PSS and IL solutions to retard ion exchange, thus preventing chemical doping of organic semiconductors by newly generated ion pairs. Finally, by using only solution processes, we demonstrate efficient ST-OSCs with a printed PEDOT:PSS/IL composite as the top electrode, exhibiting a power conversion efficiency of 6.32% at an average visible transmittance of 35.4%.
