Abstract
Enteric bacteria need to adapt to endure the antibacterial activities of bile salts in the gut. Phospholipase A (PldA) is a key enzyme in the maintenance of bacterial membrane homeostasis. Bacteria respond to stress by modulating their membrane composition. Campylobacter jejuni is the most common cause of human worldwide. However, the mechanism by which C. jejuni adapts and survives in the gut environment is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the roles of PldA, bile salt sodium deoxycholate (DOC), and oxygen availability in C. jejuni biology, mimicking an in vivo situation. Growth curves were used to determine the adaptation of C. jejuni to bile salts. RNA-seq and functional assays were employed to investigate the PldA-dependent and DOC-induced changes in gene expression that influence bacterial physiology. Survival studies were performed to address oxidative stress defense in C. jejuni. Here, we discovered that PldA of C. jejuni is required for optimal growth in the presence of bile salt DOC. Under high oxygen conditions, DOC is toxic to C. jejuni, but under low oxygen conditions, as is present in the lumen of the gut, C. jejuni benefits from DOC. C. jejuni PldA seems to enable the use of iron needed for optimal growth in the presence of DOC but makes the bacterium more vulnerable to oxidative stress. In conclusion, DOC stimulates C. jejuni growth under low oxygen conditions and alters colony morphology in a PldA-dependent manner. C. jejuni benefits from DOC by upregulating iron metabolism in a PldA-dependent manner.

Abstract
Taurine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body, and is mainly derived from the diet, but can also be produced endogenously from cysteine. It plays multiple essential roles in the body, including development, energy production, osmoregulation, prevention of oxidative stress, and inflammation. Taurine is also crucial as a molecule used to conjugate bile acids (BAs). In the gastrointestinal tract, BAs deconjugation by enteric bacteria results in high levels of unconjugated BAs and free taurine. Depending on conjugation status and other bacterial modifications, BAs constitute a pool of related but highly diverse molecules, each with different properties concerning solubility and toxicity, capacity to activate or inhibit receptors of BAs, and direct and indirect impact on microbiota and the host, whereas free taurine has a largely protective impact on the host, serves as a source of energy for microbiota, regulates bacterial colonization and defends from pathogens. Several remarkable examples of the interaction between taurine and gut microbiota have recently been described. This review will introduce the necessary background information and lay out the latest discoveries in the interaction of the co-reliant triad of BAs, taurine, and microbiota.

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni is common cause of enteritis, but biliary infection rarely reported. An 82-year-old woman with pancreatic head cancer underwent endoscopic biliary drainage for malignant biliary obstruction. She was subsequently admitted for management of diarrhea. C. jejuni was identified in stool culture. Her symptoms resolved temporarily without antibiotics but flared up with a fever a few days later. She was diagnosed with acute cholangitis and bacteremia with C. jejuni. Endoscopic biliary drainage and antimicrobial administration improved her symptoms. As complications of C. jejuni diarrhea are rare, antibiotics are not necessarily indicated but sometimes are needed to prevent complications.

Abstract
Cholecystitis caused by Campylobacter is rare with only 14 cases found in the literature. This case describes a 71-year-old man who presented with right hypochondrial abdominal pain due to a gangrenous gallbladder identified at laparotomy. Culture of a bile sample identified a slow-growing gram-negative bacterium identified as Campylobacter jejuni. After a poor clinical response, this identification allowed targeted antibiotic treatment resulting in a slow but successful recovery and discharge 17 days postoperatively. This case demonstrates the importance of considering rare organisms in severe acute cholecystitis and ensuring appropriate cultures are performed, particularly in those who fail to respond to initial antimicrobial treatment.

Abstract
Many microorganisms produce extracellular polymers referred to collectively as "slime" or glycocalyx, and form biofilms on solid surfaces in natural ecosystems. Campylobacter jejuni, one of the most important foodborne pathogens, also has the ability to form biofilm on stainless steel, glass, or polyvinyl chloride in vitro. However, the issue of biofilm formation by Campylobacter species has not been extensively examined. The present study was performed to examine the mode of adhesion of C. jejuni to a smooth surface. When bacterial suspensions in Brucella broth were incubated in microplate wells with a glass coverslip, microcolonies 0.5~2 mm in diameter were formed on the coverslip within 2 hr from the start of incubation. These microcolonies gradually grew and formed a biofilm of net-like connections within 6 hr. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that massive amounts of extracellular material masked the cell surface, and this material bound ruthenium red, suggesting the presence of a polysaccharide moiety. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that the flagella acted as bridges, forming net-like connections between the organisms. To determine the genes associated with biofilm formation, aflagellate (flaA(-)) and flagellate but non-motile (motA(-)) mutants were constructed from strain 81-176 by natural transformation-mediated allelic exchange. The flaA(-) and motA(-) mutants did not form the biofilm exhibited by the wild-type strain. These findings suggest that flagella-mediated motility as well as flagella is required for biofilm formation in vitro.

Abstract
There are 13 cases of campylobacter cholecystitis reported so far in the medical literature. Among them, only 4 patients had diarrhea. We report another case of acalculous cholecystitis in a setting of campylobacter enteritis. The case report is followed by a literature review regarding this rare condition.

Abstract
Commensal and pathogenic microorganisms must resist the deleterious actions of bile in order to survive in the human gastrointestinal tract. Herein we review the current knowledge on the mechanisms by which Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria contend with bile stress. We describe the antimicrobial actions of bile, assess the variations in bile tolerance between bacterial genera and examine the interplay between bile stress and other stresses. The molecular mechanisms underlying bile tolerance are investigated and the relationship between bile and virulence is examined. Finally, the potential benefits of bile research are briefly discussed.

Abstract
A 51-year-old man presented with acute cholecystitis and the routine intraoperative culture of the bile grew Campylobacter jejuni. The patient was cured by laparoscopic cholecystectomy without specific antimicrobial treatment. Cholecystitis owing to Campylobacter spp. could be missed because a culture for Campylobacter is not routinely requested nor is it cost effective to look for it in bile or gallbladder specimens. Moreover, the fastidious nature of these bacteria dictates against their recovery in routine culture. Because this is a rare infection at this site, a review of the literature on this infection is included.

Abstract
Campylobacter jejuni is one of the most common causes of bacterial diarrhea worldwide and is the primary bacterial cause of food-borne illness. Adherence to and invasion of epithelial cells are the most important pathogenic mechanisms of Campylobacter diarrhea. Molecular characterization of invasive and noninvasive Campylobacter isolates from children with diarrhea and symptom-free children was performed by random amplified polymorphic DNA techniques (RAPD). A distinct RAPD profile with a DNA band of 1.6 kb was observed significantly more frequently among invasive (63%) than among noninvasive (16%) Campylobacter isolates (P = 0.000005). The 1.6-kb band was named the invasion-associated marker (IAM). Using specifically designed primers, a fragment of 518 bp of the iam locus was amplified in 85% of invasive and 20% of noninvasive strains (P = 0.0000000). Molecular typing with a PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism assay which amplified the entire iam locus showed a HindIII restriction fragment polymorphism pattern associated mainly with invasive strains. Although cluster analysis of the RAPD fingerprinting showed genetic diversity among strains, two main clusters were identified. Cluster I comprised significantly more pathogenic and invasive isolates, while cluster II grouped the majority of nonpathogenic, noninvasive isolates. These data indicate that most of the invasive Campylobacter strains could be differentiated from noninvasive isolates by RAPD analysis and PCR using specific primers that amplify a fragment of the iam locus.

Abstract
Acute cholecystitis due to Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus is very uncommon. We report a case of cholecystitis and obstructive jaundice in which cultured bile grew this organism. The patient had a 4-year history of hepatocellular carcinoma, resulting in common bile duct obstruction due to abdominal lymph node metastasis. Microscopic examination of her bile showed multiple Gram-negative curved organisms and C. fetus subsp. fetus was isolated under microaerophilic conditions. Therefore, we should be aware of this organism and use microaerophilic culture in association with the result of microscopic examination of bile specimens.

A fusiform bacterium with 3 to 14 multiple bipolar sheathed flagella and periplasmic fibers wrapped around the cell was isolated from the liver, bile, and lower intestine of aged, inbred mice. The bacteria grew at 37 and 42 degrees C under microaerophilic conditions, rapidly hydrolyzed urea, were catalase and oxidase positive, reduced nitrate to nitrite, did not hydrolyze indoxyl acetate or hippurate, and were resistant to both cephalothin and nalidixic acid but sensitive to metronidazole. On the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the organism was classified as a novel helicobacter, Helicobacter bilis. This new helicobacter, like Helicobacter hepaticus, colonizes the bile, liver, and intestine of mice. Although the organism is associated with multifocal chronic hepatitis, further studies are required to ascertain whether H. bilis is responsible for causing chronic hepatitis and/or hepatocellular tumors in mice.

Abstract
The Fur protein of Escherichia coli represses transcription from Fur-responsive genes in an iron-dependent manner. We have demonstrated a Fur-like iron-responsive genetic regulatory activity operating in Campylobacter jejuni by using a chloramphenicol acetyl transferase reporter gene separated from its promoter by a synthetic Fur-responsive operator. A fur-like gene has been cloned from C. jejuni by partial functional complementation of an E. coli fur mutation. Sequence analysis has shown that, at the amino acid level, the C. jejuni Fur protein is 35% identical with its E. coli counterpart.

Abstract
Young Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were infected orally with a human strain of Campylobacter jejuni. The disease induced was mild, with inappetence and diarrhoea of short duration, but prolonged intermittent excretion of the bacteria in the faeces occurred. Bacteraemia was generally present for 2--3 days and later the organisms localized in the liver and gall bladder. Recovered animals, when challenged with the same strain, showed no clinical symptoms, no bacteraemia, and excreted the organisms in the faeces for only 3 days.

Abstract
Eleven patients were referred to the infectious diseases wards of the Prince Henry Hospital, Sydney, between August and December, 1979, with acute infectious diarrhoea acquired within Australia. Nine of the 11 had infection with Campylobacter species as the sole pathogens. In contrast, a variety of pathogens was isolated from the stools of 13 patients referred to the hospital with enteritis acquired during overseas travel, including three Shigella species, but only one Campylobacter species. The patients with campylobacter enteritis suffered fever, abdominal discomfort and diarrhoea, often with some blood. Complications of campylobacter enteritis included colitis, severe abdominal pain, renal failure, severe muscle cramps, headache with meningism, myalgias and arthralgias. Campylobacter enteritis resolved with cessation of solid food intake, together with intravenous or oral fluid therapy. Some patients were treated with erythromycin, with prompt improvement, though a role for antibiotic therapy has not yet been established.

Abstract
The effect of intravenous metronidazole as prophylaxis against postoperative wound infection was studied in a prospective, randomized, double-blind controlled trial of 116 patients undergoing elective cholecystectomy. No significant difference was found in the infection rate between the treated and the control groups.
