Abstract
Psychostimulant use disorder is a major health issue around the world with enormous individual, family-related and societal consequences, yet there are no effective pharmacological treatments available. In this review, a target-based overview of pharmacological treatments toward psychostimulant addiction will be presented. We will go through therapeutic approaches targeting different aspects of psychostimulant addiction with focus on three major areas; 1) drugs targeting signalling, and metabolism of the dopamine system, 2) drugs targeting either AMPA receptors or metabotropic glutamate receptors of the glutamate system and 3) drugs targeting the severe side-effects of quitting long-term psychostimulant use. For each of these major modes of intervention, findings from pre-clinical studies in rodents to clinical trials in humans will be listed, and future perspectives of the different treatment strategies as well as their potential side-effects will be discussed. Pharmaceuticals modulating the dopamine system, such as antipsychotics, DAT-inhibitors, and disulfiram, have shown some promising results. Cognitive enhancers have been found to increase aspects of behavioural control, and drugs targeting the glutamate system such as modulators of metabotropic glutamate receptors and AMPA receptors have provided interesting changes in relapse behaviour. Furthermore, CRF-antagonists directed toward alleviating the symptoms of the withdrawal stage have been examined with interesting resulting changes in behaviour. There are promising results investigating therapeutics for psychostimulant addiction, but further preclinical work and additional human studies with a more stratified patient selection are needed to prove sufficient evidence of efficacy and tolerability.

Abstract
Although dopamine is known to play a prominent role in mediating the abuse-related effects of cocaine, the specific roles of dopamine receptor subtypes are not fully understood. Whereas the effects of drugs acting at dopamine D2-like receptors (D2R) have been characterized, less is known about dopamine D1-like receptors (D1R). The present experiments examined the effect of drugs with varying intrinsic efficacy at D1R on the relative reinforcing strength of cocaine in male cynomolgus monkeys. Use of socially housed monkeys permitted the assessment of whether social status influenced the behavioral effects of D1R-acting drugs. The high-efficacy D1R agonist SKF 81297, low-efficacy D1R agonist SKF 38393 and D1R antagonist SCH 23390 were administered acutely to monkeys self-administering cocaine under a food-cocaine choice procedure in which a cocaine choice dose-effect curve was determined daily. To assess selectivity of behavioral effects on cocaine choice, effects of doses that did not disrupt responding (indicated by a {greater than or equal to}35% decrease in total reinforcers delivered) were analyzed. Neither SKF 81297 nor SCH 23390 affected cocaine choice in dominant or subordinate monkeys. However, the low-efficacy agonist SKF 38393 selectively decreased cocaine choice; this effect was larger and only reached statistical significance in subordinate monkeys. Increasing the pretreatment time did not affect these results. The results indicate that, like D2R-acting drugs, the behavioral effects of D1R-acting drugs on cocaine choice can differ according to intrinsic efficacy and social status. Moreover, they demonstrate that D1R-acting drugs affect behavior under a narrower range of conditions than D2R-acting drugs. Significance Statement Cocaine use disorder remains a significant public health problem with no FDA-approved treatments. Although dopamine receptors have been strongly implicated in mediating the abuse-related effects of cocaine, the roles of dopamine receptor subtypes are incompletely understood. The present study in nonhuman primates found that cocaine choice was decreased only by a low-efficacy D1R agonist, and this effect was dependent on the social status of the monkey.

Abstract
Examination of a drug's abuse potential at multiple levels of analysis (molecular/cellular action, whole-organism behavior, epidemiological data) is an essential component to regulating controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). We reviewed studies that examined several central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, focusing on those with primarily dopaminergic actions, in drug self-administration, drug discrimination, and physical dependence. For drug self-administration and drug discrimination, we distinguished between experiments conducted with rats and nonhuman primates (NHP) to highlight the common and unique attributes of each model in the assessment of abuse potential. Our review of drug self-administration studies suggests that this procedure is important in predicting abuse potential of dopaminergic compounds, but there were many false positives. We recommended that tests to determine how reinforcing a drug is relative to a known drug of abuse may be more predictive of abuse potential than tests that yield a binary, yes-or-no classification. Several false positives also occurred with drug discrimination. With this procedure, we recommended that future research follow a standard decision-tree approach that may require examining the drug being tested for abuse potential as the training stimulus. This approach would also allow several known drugs of abuse to be tested for substitution, and this may reduce false positives. Finally, we reviewed evidence of physical dependence with stimulants and discussed the feasibility of modeling these phenomena in nonhuman animals in a rational and practical fashion. Abstract
AIMS To test aripiprazole for efficacy in decreasing use in methamphetamine-dependent adults, compared to placebo. DESIGN Participants were randomized to receive 12 weeks of aripiprazole or placebo, with a 3-month follow-up and a platform of weekly 30-minute substance abuse counseling. SETTING The trial was conducted from January 2009 to March 2012 at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. PARTICIPANTS Ninety actively using, methamphetamine-dependent, sexually active adults were recruited from community venues. MEASUREMENTS The primary outcome was regression estimated reductions in weekly methamphetamine-positive urines. Secondary outcomes were study medication adherence [by self-report and medication event monitoring systems (MEMS)], sexual risk behavior and abstinence from methamphetamine. FINDINGS Participant mean age was 38.7 years, 87.8% were male, 50.0% white, 18.9% African American, and 16.7% Latino. Eighty-three per cent of follow-up visits and final visits were completed. By intent-to-treat, participants assigned to aripiprazole had similar reductions in methamphetamine-positive urines as participants assigned to placebo [risk ratio (RR) 0.88, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.66-1.19, P = 0.41]. Urine positivity declined from 73% (33 of 45 participants) to 45% (18 of 40) in the placebo arm and from 77% (34 of 44) to 44% (20 of 35) in the aripiprazole arm. Adherence by MEMS and self-report was 42 and 74%, respectively, with no significant difference between arms (MEMS P = 0.31; self-report P = 0.17). Most sexual risk behaviors declined similarly among participants in both arms (all P > 0.05). There were no serious adverse events related to study drug, although participants randomized to aripiprazole reported more akathisia, fatigue and drowsiness (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Compared with placebo, aripiprazole did not reduce methamphetamine use significantly among actively using, dependent adults.

Dopamine D2/D3 receptor partial agonists have been suggested as medications for cocaine dependence. The present experiments examined the effect of acute and repeated administration of drugs with varying intrinsic efficacy at D2/D3 receptors on the relative reinforcing strength of cocaine. Use of socially housed cynomolgus monkeys permitted the assessment of whether social status, known to alter D2/D3 receptor availability, influenced the behavioral effects of D2/D3 receptor compounds. The high-efficacy agonist R(-)-norpropylapomorphine [(-)-NPA], low-efficacy agonist aripiprazole (ARI), and antagonist eticlopride (ETIC) were administered acutely to monkeys self-administering cocaine under a food-cocaine choice procedure in which a cocaine self-administration dose-effect curve was determined daily. The effects of 5-day treatment with ARI and (-)-NPA were characterized under conditions in which monkeys did (ARI) or did not [ARI and (-)-NPA] self-administer cocaine during treatment. When administered acutely, ARI and ETIC increased the choice of low cocaine doses, and only (-)-NPA decreased the choice of higher cocaine doses and cocaine intake; effects were similar across social ranks. When administered repeatedly while self administration occurred only on days 1 and 5 of treatment, ARI, but not (-)-NPA, decreased cocaine choice in dominant monkeys, whereas (-)-NPA, but not ARI, did so in subordinates. When dominant monkeys self-administered cocaine on all five days of ARI treatment, however, these effects were not observed. The results indicate that the behavioral effects of D2/D3 receptor agonists can differ according to intrinsic efficacy and subject characteristics. Moreover, these results suggest that exposure to cocaine during treatment can counteract treatment-induced reductions in the reinforcing effects of cocaine.

Abstract
Dopamine receptor mechanisms are believed to play a role in the reinforcing effects of cocaine and other drugs of abuse. The lack of receptor-selective agonists has made it difficult to determine the role of the individual dopamine receptors in mediating these reinforcing effects. In this study, rhesus monkeys with a history of intravenous cocaine self-administration were tested for the reinforcing effects of several D(3)-preferring agonists, a D(2)-preferring agonist, and a D(4) agonist. The D(2)-preferring agonist did not maintain responding in any monkeys, and the D(4) agonist was self-administered at low rates, just above those maintained by saline, in one monkey. The D(3)-preferring agonists were self-administered by approximately half of the animals, although at lower rates than cocaine. These results indicate that the apparent limited reinforcing effectiveness of D(2)-like agonists requires activity at D(3) receptors. Previous data from this laboratory and others also suggest that these drugs may not serve as reinforcers directly; the behavior may be maintained by response-contingent delivery of stimuli previously paired with cocaine. The ability of drug-related stimuli to maintain responding apparently differs among monkeys and other organisms, and may be related to individual differences in drug-taking behavior in humans.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ropinirole, a D(2)/D(3)/5-HT(1A) agonist, is used for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and restless leg syndrome, and is currently being evaluated as a treatment for cocaine dependence. However, there is little information available on ropinirole's reinforcing effects. METHODS The current study tested ropinirole in monkeys (n=7) trained to self administer cocaine on a fixed-ratio 25 (FR 25) schedule of reinforcement to determine if it would function as a reinforcer. In addition, a behavioral economics approach was used in four monkeys to compare the reinforcing effectiveness of ropinirole to cocaine. RESULTS Cocaine (0.01-0.3 mg/kg/injection) functioned as a reinforcer in all monkeys under the FR 25 schedule, and ropinirole (0.01-0.1mg/kg/injection) functioned as a reinforcer in all but one. Furthermore, cocaine was a more effective reinforcer than ropinirole as indexed by demand functions. CONCLUSION The current data indicate that ropinirole has reinforcing effects in monkeys, although its effectiveness as a reinforcer is relatively weak.

Abstract
It has been suggested that activation of dopamine D1-like and D2-like receptors contribute equally to the maintenance of drug self-administration. This study compared the contribution of these receptor subtypes to 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) and methamphetamine (MA) self-administration. Effects of pretreatment with the D2-like receptor antagonist, eticlopride (0.0, 0.0125, 0.025 or 0.05 mg/kg, intraperitoneal), on responding maintained by several doses of MDMA (0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mg/kg/infusion) and MA (0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 mg/kg/infusion) were determined. As we have published data showing the effects of the D1-like receptor antagonist, SCH23390 (0.0, 0.01 or 0.02 mg/kg, subcutaneous), on MDMA self-administration, effects of this dose range on the MA dose-response curve were determined. In our previous study, 0.02 mg/kg SCH23390 produced a rightward shift in the MDMA dose response curve, whereas in the present results, this dose decreased responding maintained by most doses of MA. Eticlopride increased the responding maintained by most doses of MDMA but failed to alter MA self-administration. The present results suggest that both D1-like and D2-like receptors contribute to the maintenance of MDMA self-administration, whereas MA self-administration was more sensitive to D1-like receptor blockade.

Abstract
RATIONALE Dopamine D2-like partial agonists such as aripiprazole have received some attention as potential pharmacotherapies for the treatment of psychostimulant addiction. However, the preclinical evaluations so far have focused on acute effects of aripiprazole. OBJECTIVES We tested the hypothesis that aripiprazole, both as acute and as chronic treatment, would preferentially decrease cocaine self-administration while sparing behavior maintained by a natural reinforcer, resulting in a shift in the allocation of behavior from cocaine-taking towards the alternative reinforcer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rats were trained to self-administer intravenous cocaine in a concurrent choice procedure, with a palatable food as the competing reinforcer, under a fixed ratio (FR) 1 FR 5 chain schedule. Aripiprazole was then administered as continuous infusion by osmotic minipumps for 5 days, during which performance in the choice procedure was assessed daily. RESULTS An intermediate dose of aripiprazole decreased cocaine self-administration and shifted the cocaine choice curve to the right as an acute treatment. However, as a chronic treatment, aripiprazole failed to decrease cocaine self-administration or cocaine choice, despite a dose-dependent decrease in overall response rates and food-maintained behavior. CONCLUSIONS Our results confirm and extend earlier findings and indicate that acute administration of aripiprazole can decrease cocaine self-administration. However, based on the present data, chronic treatment with aripiprazole does not show much promise as a potential pharmacotherapy for cocaine addiction. Both acute and chronic treatment data are in agreement with published clinical findings, suggesting that the concurrent choice procedure in rats has predictive validity of efficacy in humans.

Abstract
RATIONALE The novel antipsychotic aripiprazole in use for treatment of schizophrenia is a partial agonist at dopamine D2 receptors with actions at a variety of other receptors as well. Cocaine is believed to exert an important part of its rewarding effect by increasing extracellular levels of dopamine that subsequently act at dopamine D2 receptors. OBJECTIVES As a partial agonist, aripiprazole may antagonize effects at D2 receptors and we accordingly tested whether aripiprazole could antagonize self-administration of cocaine. Because D2-like receptor agonists are self-administered, a D2 receptor partial agonist like aripiprazole might itself be reinforcing. Thus, we also assessed whether mice would acquire self-administration of aripiprazole. MATERIALS AND METHODS A single session, mouse self-administration procedure was used. RESULTS Oral pretreatment with aripiprazole dose-dependently decreased cocaine self-administration under a fixed ratio 1 schedule at the peak cocaine dose (0.03 mg/kg/infusion), reaching significance at 0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg of aripiprazole. Using 0.4 mg/kg, aripiprazole decreased rates of cocaine self-administration without shifting the peak of the dose-response function. There was no effect of aripiprazole per se, suggesting that its inhibitory action was due to effects on cocaine self-administration rather than non-specific motor effects. Aripiprazole was not found to be self-administered in the tested dose range (0.0003-0.3 mg/kg/infusion). The three highest doses (0.03, 0.1, and 0.3 mg/kg/infusion) even caused significant decreases in nose-poking activity, possibly due to extrapyramidal side effects. CONCLUSIONS These data are consistent with a potential role for aripiprazole in treatment of cocaine addiction without abuse potential per se.

Abstract
Cocaine-heroin combinations ("speedballs") are commonly self-administered by polydrug abusers. Speedball self-administration may reflect in part an enhancement of the reinforcing effects of the drug combination compared with either drug alone. The present study investigated the degree to which the dopamine receptor system plays a role in cocaine-induced enhancement of heroin self-administration. In rhesus monkeys trained under a progressive ratio schedule of i.v. drug injection, combining heroin with cocaine shifted the heroin dose-response function leftward, and isobolographic analysis indicated that the combined effects were dose-additive. Likewise, combining heroin with the D1-like receptor agonists 6-chloro-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-(1H)-3-benzazepine HCl (SKF 81297) and 6-chloro-N-allyl-7,8-dihydroxy-1-phenyl-2,3,4,5-tetrahydro-[1H]-3-benzazepine (SKF 82958) resulted in a leftward shift in the heroin dose-response function that was dose-additive. In contrast, combining heroin with the D2-like agonists R-(-)-propylnorapomorphine (NPA) and quinpirole shifted the heroin dose-response function to the right. Isobolographic analysis of the combined effects of heroin with NPA and quinpirole revealed infra-additive interactions in both cases. When combined with cocaine instead of heroin, both the D1-like receptor agonist SKF 81297 and the D2-like receptor agonist NPA enhanced cocaine self-administration. The combinations of SKF 81297 with cocaine were dose additive; however, the NPA-cocaine interaction was infra-additive. Together, the results suggest that D1- and D2-like receptor mechanisms may play qualitatively different roles in the combined self-administration of heroin and cocaine. In particular, stimulation of D1-like receptors enhances self-administration of heroin or cocaine individually, similar to the effects of combining cocaine with heroin, whereas stimulation of D2-like receptors seems to play primarily an inhibitory role.

Abstract
In this review we will critically assess the hypothesis that the reinforcing effect of virtually all drugs of abuse is primarily dependent on activation of the mesolimbic dopamine system. The focus is on five classes of abused drugs: psychostimulants, opiates, ethanol, cannabinoids and nicotine. For each of these drug classes, the pharmacological and physiological mechanisms underlying the direct or indirect influence on mesolimbic dopamine transmission will be reviewed. Next, we evaluate behavioral pharmacological experiments that specifically assess the influence of activation of the mesolimbic dopamine system on drug reinforcement, with particular emphasis on animal experiments using drug self-administration paradigms. There is overwhelming evidence that all five classes of abused drugs increase dopamine transmission in limbic regions of the brain through interactions with a variety of transporters, ionotropic receptors and metabotropic receptors. Behavioral pharmacological experiments indicate that increased dopamine transmission is clearly both necessary and sufficient to promote psychostimulant reinforcement. For the other four classes of abused substances, self-administration experiments suggest that although increasing mesolimbic dopamine transmission plays an important role in the reinforcing effects of opiates, ethanol, cannabinoids and nicotine, there are also dopamine-independent processes that contribute significantly to the reinforcing effects of these compounds.

Abstract
The transition from casual drug use to addiction, and the intense drug craving that accompanies it, has been postulated to result from neuroadaptations within the limbic system caused by repeated drug exposure. This review will examine the implications of cocaine-induced alterations in mesolimbic dopamine receptor signaling within the context of several widely used animal models of addiction. Extensive evidence indicates that dopaminergic mechanisms critically mediate behavioral sensitization to cocaine, cocaine-induced conditioned place preference, cocaine self-administration, and the drug prime-induced reinstatement of cocaine-seeking behavior. The propagation of the long-term neuronal changes associated with recurring cocaine use appears to occur at the level of postreceptor signal transduction. Repeated cocaine treatment causes an up-regulation of the 3',5'-cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP)-signaling pathway within the nucleus accumbens, resulting in a dys-regulation of balanced D1/D2 dopamine-like receptor signaling. The intracellular events arising from enhanced D1-like postsynaptic signaling mediate both facilitatory and compensatory responses to the further reinforcing effects of cocaine.

Abstract
RATIONALE In adult rats, the partial D(2)-like agonist terguride acts as an antagonist at normosensitive D(2)-like post-synaptic receptors, while it acts as an agonist at the same receptors during states of low dopaminergic tone. OBJECTIVE The purpose of the present study was to determine whether partial D(2)-like agonists exhibit both antagonistic and agonistic actions during the preweanling period. METHODS In experiments 1 and 2 (examining the agonistic actions of terguride), preweanling rats were either given an escalating regimen of amphetamine to induce a state of amphetamine withdrawal or pretreated with the tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor AMPT. Distance traveled was measured after rats were injected with saline, terguride (0.4-1.6 mg/kg), or the full D(2)-like receptor agonist NPA (0.01 mg/kg). In experiment 3 (examining the antagonistic actions of terguride), preweanling rats were pretreated with terguride 30 min before they were tested with saline, NPA (0.05 mg/kg), or amphetamine (1.5 mg/kg). RESULTS NPA had an exaggerated locomotor activating effect when tested under conditions of amphetamine withdrawal, while the partial D(2)-like agonist did not enhance distance traveled under any circumstance. Similarly, NPA increased and terguride did not affect the distance-traveled scores of AMPT-pretreated rats. In experiment 3, terguride pretreatment significantly reduced the distance traveled of amphetamine-treated and NPA-treated rats. CONCLUSIONS The behavioral evidence indicates that, during the preweanling period, terguride antagonizes D(2)-like post-synaptic receptors in a state of high dopaminergic tone; however, there is no evidence that terguride is capable of stimulating D(2)-like post-synaptic receptors during states of low dopaminergic tone.

Abstract
A procedure is described for comprehensive evaluation of the effects of acute drug pretreatments on the reinforcing effects of cocaine using the rat self-administration assay in combination with a novel control assay of liquid-food maintained responding. In sessions comprised of five 20-min components, either complete dose-effect functions for cocaine self-administration or complete concentration-effect functions for liquid-food maintained responding were evaluated. The schedule of reinforcement (FR 5 TO 20-s), drug pretreatment doses and time intervals (0-30 min), and duration of sessions (108 min) were identical for cocaine- and food-reinforced test sessions. Whereas acute pretreatment with indirect dopamine agonists (D-amphetamine, GBR 12909) and D2-like agonists (7-OH-DPAT, quinelorane) produced dose-dependent leftward shifts in dose-effect functions for cocaine self-administration, D1-like agonists (SKF 82958, R-6-Br-APB) and dopamine antagonists (D1-like, SCH 39166; D2-like, eticlopride) shifted dose-effect functions for cocaine downward and rightward, respectively. Interestingly, with the indirect dopamine agonists but not the D2-like agonists, increased responding maintained by low cocaine doses was paralleled by increased responding maintained by low food concentrations. Moreover, three of the four direct agonists were moderately selective (< or =5-fold more potent) in decreasing cocaine self-administration relative to food maintained responding. When data were analyzed according to alterations in total cocaine intake, all of the agonists uniformly decreased total cocaine intake, whereas both antagonists increased total cocaine intake. Overall, this procedure was sensitive to leftward, downward and rightward shifts in cocaine dose-effect functions and should be useful for evaluating the nature of pharmacological interactions between novel compounds and self-administered cocaine, as well as the potential for altering cocaine self-administration selectively with candidate treatments for cocaine abuse and dependence.

Abstract
RATIONALE The D2-like receptor partial agonist terguride has a profile of behavioral effects in rats that suggests potential benefit as a pharmacotherapy for cocaine addiction. OBJECTIVES The present study investigated the effects of terguride on cocaine- and food-maintained behavior in squirrel monkeys. METHODS Squirrel monkeys were trained to respond on a second-order schedule (FI 10 min, FR 10 or 30:S) of either i.v. cocaine injection or food pellet delivery. Additional monkeys were studied using quantitative observational techniques to construct side effect profiles. Under each procedure, the effects of terguride were compared with those of the reference D2-like receptor antagonist nemonapride and the D2-like receptor full agonist quinpirole. RESULTS Terguride and nemonapride, but not quinpirole, dose-dependently reduced cocaine-maintained behavior. In animals self-administering food, terguride decreased response rates at doses lower than those required to suppress cocaine-maintained behavior. Effective doses of terguride had no systematic effect on motor activity or muscle rigidity, whereas effective doses of nemonapride virtually eliminated motor activity and induced severe catalepsy. The primary observable effects of terguride were a modest increase in self-directed behavior (a D2-receptor agonist-like effect) at intermediate doses and a small increase in static posture (a D2-receptor antagonist-like effect) at the highest dose tested. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that terguride has advantages over conventional D2-like receptor antagonists and agonists as a candidate pharmacotherapy for cocaine abuse; however, terguride significantly reduces food-maintained behavior at lower doses than those needed to decrease cocaine-maintained behavior suggesting limitations on the utility of terguride as a medication for cocaine addiction.

Abstract
Addiction to drugs, such as heroin, cocaine and alcohol, exacts great human and financial costs on society, but the development of pharmacotherapies for addiction has been largely neglected by the pharmaceutical industry. With advances in our understanding of the underlying biology of addictions now opening the door for the development of novel pharmacotherapies, it could be time for a reassessment of involvement in this increasingly important therapeutic area. Here, we summarize the current approved and implemented pharmacotherapeutic approaches to the treatment of addiction, and then highlight the most promising areas for future drug development from the perspective of our laboratory and our National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Research Center.

Abstract
High-efficacy D2-like dopamine (DA) receptor agonists can function as positive reinforcers when made available to animals for intravenous self-administration under a fixed-ratio (FR) schedule of reinforcement. In a previous study, however, low-efficacy D2-like agonists failed to maintain self-administration under an FR schedule, suggesting that agonist efficacy is directly related to efficacy as a positive reinforcer. To examine this hypothesis further, the present study compared two D2-like DA receptor agonists that maintained FR responding, but differ in their D2-like receptor efficacy and selectivity, using a procedure designed to rank-order drugs according to their efficacy as reinforcers. Rhesus monkeys (n=5) were prepared with chronic, indwelling intravenous catheters and allowed to self-administer cocaine (0.1 mg/kg/injection) or saline on different days under a progressive-ratio (PR) schedule. When responding was stable, doses of the full D2-like agonist R(-)-propylnorapomorphine (NPA) or the partial D2-like agonist R(-)-apomorphine (APO) were made available for self-administration in the test sessions. Both compounds maintained self-administration with sigmoidal or biphasic dose-response functions. Surprisingly, the lower efficacy agonist APO was the more efficacious positive reinforcer. This result fails to support the hypothesis that D2-like receptor efficacy is directly related to efficacy as a reinforcer. It is possible that other pharmacological effects, e.g., D1 receptor activity, influenced self-administration.
