Abstract
Essential to many activities in our bodies, ascorbic acid is a small molecule essential to human health and physiological processes. In this study, a covalent organic framework called TpNda-COF was synthesized, which is composed of Tp (triformylephloroglucinol) and Nda (1, 5-napthalenediamine). This framework acts as a mimic enzyme and displays excellent oxidase-like activity when stimulated with purple light (at = 405 nm). It catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzydine (TMB) by generating O2- free radicals in the presence of oxygen. The resulting oxTMB shows a characteristic absorption peak at 652 nm. The biomimetic catalysis efficiency is significantly improved due to spatial restriction. By introducing ascorbic acid (AA) in the system, the blue oxTMB is reduced to colorless TMB. The decrease in absorption peak intensity can be quantitatively measured using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, enabling the detection of AA. The sensing platform demonstrates excellent selectivity and sensitivity. It has a wide linear detection range from 5 μM to 50 μM, with a low detection limit of 1.44 μM. Advantages such as the easy control of light, high stability and efficient oxidation are provided by the TpNda-COF mimic oxidase. This innovative method presents a promising and cost-effective approach for rapid detection of ascorbic acid, with potential applications across various fields.

Abstract
Flavonoids are antioxidant phytochemicals that confer a beneficial effect on human health. We have previously developed and characterized eight lettuce (Latuca sativa L.) lines that accumulated high levels of diverse flavonoids and their precursors in controlled environment conditions. Three Rutgers Scarlet lettuce (RSL) lines selected in tissue culture for deep-red color (RSL-NAR, RSL-NBR, RSL-NFR) accumulate anthocyanins and quercetin, three lines identified in a chemically mutagenized red lettuce population accumulate kaempferol (KfoA and KfoB) or naringenin chalcone (Nco), and two lines that were spontaneous green mutants derived from the red line RSL-NAR (GSL, GSL-DG) accumulate quercetin. These eight lines were field-grown in the Salinas Valley of California for four years together with seven control accessions of varying colors (light green, dark green, red, and dark red). At market maturity, a substantial variation in plant composition was observed, but the three RSL lines consistently accumulated high levels of cyanidin, GSL and GSL-DG accumulated the highest levels of quercetin, KfoA and KfoB accumulated kaempferol, and Nco amassed naringenin chalcone, confirming that these mutant lines produce high levels of beneficial phytochemicals under field conditions. Mutant lines and control accessions were also assessed for their biomass production (plant weight, height, and width), overall content of pigments (leaf chlorophyll and anthocyanins), resistance to diseases (downy mildew, lettuce drop, and Impatiens necrotic spot virus), postharvest quality of processed tissue (deterioration and enzymatic discoloration), and composition of 23 mineral elements. All but one mutant line had a fresh plant weight at harvest comparable to commercial leaf cultivars; only Nco plants were significantly (p < 0.05) smaller. Therefore, except for Nco, the new, flavonoid hyperaccumulating lines can be considered for field cultivation.

Abstract
Ascorbic acid is a nutritional small molecule essential to human life activities and health, playing a vital role in many physiological processes. Fresh fruits and beverages can provide abundant AA to maintain human metabolic balance. Therefore, it is of great significance to develop a nanomaterial with superior nanozyme activity for rapid and convenient detection of ascorbic acid (AA) in fruits and beverages. Herein, a dual-signal sensing platform based on UV-vis absorption and test strip chromaticity for the quantitative determination of AA is presented. The sensing platform is based on the horseradish peroxidase-like activity of Ni3V2O8 nanoflowers, which catalyzes the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) by hydrogen peroxide to the blue oxide TMB (ox TMB). The ox TMB produced by the oxidation has a characteristic absorption peak at 650 nm. In the presence of AA, the blue ox TMB is reduced to colorless TMB, and the quantitative detection of AA can be achieved by detecting the decrease in intensity of the absorption peak by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the sensing platform exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity. A wide linear range of 0.1 μM to 40 μM with a detection limit of 0.032 μM was obtained. The linear equation is ΔA = 0.02513c + 0.1164 with a correlation coefficient of 0.9979. It showed excellent properties in the detection of real samples of fruit juices and beverages, meanwhile, a method for the rapid detection of AA based on chromaticity change of test strips was constructed with high sensitivity and convenience. The linearity range for the ascorbic acid was 1-50 μM with LOD of 0.42 μM. The developed sensing platform has the capability to quickly and accurately detect ascorbic acid (AA) in fresh fruits and beverages. This proposed method offers a new and promising approach for the rapid and cost-effective detection of ascorbic acid, which has a wide range of potential applications.

Abstract
Food is our daily companion, performing numerous beneficial functions for our bodies. Many of them can help to alleviate or prevent ailments and diseases. In this review, an extensive bibliographic search is conducted in various databases to update information on unprocessed foods with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can aid in treating diseases such as cancer. The current state of knowledge on inflammatory processes involving some interleukins and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) is reviewed. As well as unprocessed foods, which may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which are important factors in cancer development. Many studies are still needed to take full advantage of the food products we use daily.

Abstract
Pineapple is a tropical fruit consumed fresh or processed into various food products. However, the peel and crown of this fruit are not industrially exploited, thus generating tons of by-products that represent an economic and environmental concern. In order to promote the upcycling of these by-products, this work aimed to characterize the phenolic profile of its hydroethanolic extracts obtained from pineapple peel and crown leaves and to evaluate their in vitro bioactivity. The HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS analysis allowed the identification of 25 phenolic compounds, including phenolic acids and flavonoids. The antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activity assays highlighted the peel extract as the most promising and, therefore, it was incorporated into a traditional Portuguese pastry cake as a functional ingredient. The nutritional parameters of the developed food were not affected by the incorporation of the extract, but it promoted the antioxidant activity during its shelf-life. Overall, pineapple peel and crown appeared as promising by-products to be exploited by the food industry, which can be achieved through a circular economy approach.

Abstract
Androgen is a kind of steroid hormone that plays a vital role in reproductive system and homeostasis of the body. Disrupted androgen balance serves as the causal contributor to a series of physiological disorders and even diseases. Flavonoids, as an extremely frequent family of natural polyphenols, exist widely in plants and foods and have received great attention when considering their inevitable consumption and estrogen-like effects. Mounting evidence illustrates that flavonoids have a propensity to interfere with androgen synthesis and metabolism, and also have a designated improvement effect on androgen disorders. Therefore, flavonoids were divided into six subclasses based on the structural feature in this paper, and the literature about their effects on androgens published in the past ten years was summarized. It could be concluded that flavonoids have the potential to regulate androgen levels and biological effects, mainly by interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, androgen synthesis and metabolism, androgen binding with its receptors and membrane receptors, and antioxidant effects. The faced challenges about androgen regulation by flavonoids masterly include target mechanism exploration, individual heterogeneity, food matrixes interaction, and lack of clinical study. This review also provides a scientific basis for nutritional intervention using flavonoids to improve androgen disorder symptoms.

Abstract
The addition of fruit to the diet is very important, and we can use nutraceutical and functional foods for this supplement. A little-known fruit is a red pitaya (Hylocereus undatus) that has been widely reported to have a high antioxidant potential. In this study, we analyzed the in vitro and in vivo antioxidant capacity of microencapsulated pitaya extract on the behavior, antioxidant, and nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The worms were treated with fruit extract before and after juglone-induced stress, to determine the protective or curative effects of pitaya. We have been evaluated cholinergic, antioxidant, and behavioral biomarkers. We have evidenced that the pulp of pitaya contains antioxidant compounds and can serve as a potential nutraceutical product. In addition, the fruit extract was effective in preventing and/or reverse the stress-induced damages, even at high levels of chemical stress at all evaluated parameters. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The potential applications and uses aimed by this research are related to the supplementation of foods given the antioxidant effect. Our data suggested that the effect of the pitaya fruit microencapsulated pulp extract was effective to prevent and repair the damage caused by oxidative stress. Besides the use of this microencapsulated extract can be an auxiliary in the treatment of diseases related to oxidative damage as well as promoting senescent aging. Another important use is the application of this extract as a dietary supplement to fortify the antioxidant system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the dramatically rapid rate of aging worldwide, the maintenance of cognitive function in old age is a major public health priority. The association between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of midlife diet and cognitive function in late-life is still unclear. METHODS The study included 16 703 participants from a prospective cohort study in Singapore. Dietary intakes and selected supplementary use were assessed with a validated 165-item food frequency questionnaires at baseline (1993-1998). Two dietary TACs were calculated from the intake of antioxidant nutrients, the Comprehensive Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and the Vitamin C Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (VCEAC). Cognitive function was assessed 20.2 years later using a Singapore-modified version of the Mini-Mental State Examination when subjects were 61-96 years old. Cognitive impairment was defined using education-specific cut-offs. Multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to estimate the associations between dietary TACs, component nutrients and cognitive impairment. RESULTS A total of 2392 participants (14.3%) were defined to have cognitive impairment. Both CDAI and VCEAC scores were inversely associated with odds of cognitive impairment in a dose-dependent manner. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval; p-trend) comparing the highest with the lowest quartile was 0.84 (0.73, 0.96; p-trend = .003) for the CDAI and 0.75 (0.66, 0.86; p-trend < .001) for the VCEAC. Higher intakes of vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, and flavonoids were all inversely associated with cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS Higher dietary total antioxidant capacity was associated with lower odds of cognitive impairment in later life in a Chinese population in Singapore.

Abstract
Caffeic acid is one of the most abundant hydroxycinnamic acids in fruits, vegetables, and beverages. This phenolic compound reaches relevant concentrations in the colon (up to 126 µM) where it could come into contact with the intestinal cells and exert its anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this investigation was to study the capacity of caffeic acid, at plausible concentrations from an in vivo point of view, to modulate mechanisms related to intestinal inflammation. Consequently, we tested the effects of caffeic acid (50–10 µM) on cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 expression and prostaglandin (PG)E2, cytokines, and chemokines (IL-8, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 -MCP-1-, and IL-6) biosynthesis in IL-1β-treated human myofibroblasts of the colon, CCD-18Co. Furthermore, the capacity of caffeic acid to inhibit the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity, to hinder advanced glycation end product (AGE) formation, as well as its antioxidant, reducing, and chelating activity were also investigated. Our results showed that (i) caffeic acid targets COX-2 and its product PGE2 as well as the biosynthesis of IL-8 in the IL-1β-treated cells and (ii) inhibits AGE formation, which could be related to (iii) the high chelating activity exerted. Low anti-ACE, antioxidant, and reducing capacity of caffeic acid was also observed. These effects of caffeic acid expands our knowledge on anti-inflammatory mechanisms against intestinal inflammation.

Abstract
Polyphenols, as well as volatile compounds responsible for aromatic features, play a critical role in the quality of vegetables and medicinal, and aromatic plants (MAPs). The research conducted in recent years has shown that these plants contain biologically active compounds, mainly polyphenols, that relate to the prevention of inflammatory processes, neurodegenerative diseases, cancers, and cardiovascular disorders as well as to antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiparasitic properties. Throughout the years, many researchers have deeply studied polyphenols and volatile compounds in medicinal and aromatic plants, particularly those associated with consumer's choices or with their beneficial properties. In this context, the purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the presence of volatile and nonvolatile compounds in some of the most economically relevant and consumed vegetables and medicinal and aromatic plants, with an emphasis on bioactive polyphenols, polyphenols as prebiotics, and, also, the most important factors that affect the contents and profiles of the volatile and nonvolatile compounds responsible for the aromatic features of vegetables and MAPs. Additionally, the new challenges for science in terms of improving polyphenol composition and intensifying volatile compounds responsible for the positive characteristics of vegetables and medicinal and aromatic plants are reported.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dandruff and Seborrheic Dermatitis (SD) are similar skin conditions with different degrees ofseverity. Since the current therapies cannot remove dandruff efficiently, herbal extracts with better effectiveness and fewer side effects are used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Due to the adverse effects of chemical drugs, the use of natural products and traditional medicine has significantly increased over the past few decades. Therefore, in this review, we reported the herbs used as anti-dandruff agents in traditional medicine worldwide. METHODS The review was conducted on the literature available on the medicinal utility of certain plants as anti-dandruff agents using PubMed and Google Scholar and the following search terms: Dandruff and plants or medicinal plant and dandruff treatment, and essential oil and dandruff. RESULTS Since the current therapies cannotefficiently remove dandruff, herbal extracts with better effectiveness and fewer side effects are used in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Nowadays, there are numerous different types of herbal antidandruff shampoos. They are effective and safe without the side effects of chemical agents. Recently, herbal medicine has attracted a great deal of scientific attention. Clinical evidence on the therapeutic effects of herbal products has resulted in the study of far more herbs for their therapeutic roles. CONCLUSION Herbal therapy plays a significant role in the development of favorable therapeutics, either alone or in combination with conventional antibiotics. However, the major challenges in this regard include finding compounds with satisfactorily lower MICs, low toxicity, and high bioavailability for effective and safe use in humans and animals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the remarkable advances made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer during the past couple of decades, it remains the second largest cause of mortality in the world, killing approximately 9.6 million people annually. The major challenges in the treatment of the advanced stage of this disease are the development of chemoresistance, severe adverse effects of the drugs, and high treatment cost. Therefore, the development of drugs that are safe, efficacious, and cost-effective remains a 'Holy Grail' in cancer research. However, the research over the past four decades shed light on the cancer-preventive and therapeutic potential of natural products and their underlying mechanism of action. Apigenin is one such compound, which is known to be safe and has significant potential in the prevention and therapy of this disease. AIM To assess the literature available on the potential of apigenin and its analogs in modulating the key molecular targets leading to the prevention and treatment of different types of cancer. METHOD A comprehensive literature search has been carried out on PubMed for obtaining information related to the sources and analogs, chemistry and biosynthesis, physicochemical properties, biological activities, bioavailability and toxicity of apigenin. KEY FINDINGS The literature search resulted in many in vitro, in vivo and a few cohort studies that evidenced the effectiveness of apigenin and its analogs in modulating important molecular targets and signaling pathways such as PI3K/AKT/mTOR, JAK/STAT, NF-κB, MAPK/ERK, Wnt/β-catenin, etc., which play a crucial role in the development and progression of cancer. In addition, apigenin was also shown to inhibit chemoresistance and radioresistance and make cancer cells sensitive to these agents. Reports have further revealed the safety of the compound and the adaptation of nanotechnological approaches for improving its bioavailability. SIGNIFICANCE Hence, the present review recapitulates the properties of apigenin and its pharmacological activities against different types of cancer, which warrant further investigation in clinical settings.

Abstract
Food composition data are challenged by data availability and quality. Anthocyanins are the bright colored pigments found in fruits and vegetables with growing evidence for health benefits. For the estimation of anthocyanin content in the foods, it is imperative to find an ideal analytical method. To quantify anthocyanin components, liquid chromatography-based methods are commonly used. This review addresses the variability of liquid chromatography (LC) mass spectrometry (MS) methods for the identification and quantification of anthocyanins. Published studies for all years until February 2020 reporting LC methods for anthocyanins in fruits and vegetables were screened from 7660 studies. Only 29 studies met the eligibility criteria of method type and of these, only 13 studies reported a validated LC method. A wide range of validation parameters were identified including specificity, calibration, stability, and limits of detection. Differences in the sampling amounts for extraction were observed in all of the included studies. The quantification of multiple anthocyanin types without their corresponding analytical standards was observed in eight studies. The included 13 studies used reverse phase liquid chromatography separation with C18 type or similar stationary phases and acidified aqueous or acidified aqueous: organic (usually methanol or acetonitrile) binary gradient mobile phases. Although all of the studies used mass spectrometry for identification, ultraviolet absorbance quantification was often used in conjunction with a photo-diode array (DAD/PDA) detector using reference standards where available. Extraction and preparation of samples remains the key concern for analysis as the oxidative stability of anthocyanins are a major impediment for accurate quantification of the components in foods. This review provides a summary of validated LC methods to assist analysts and nutritionists in the quantification of anthocyanin food components as the nutrient profiles of foods are challenged by the variability of the analytical methods.

Abstract
The effect of formulating orange juice (OJ) with dietary fibers (DFs) on in vitro bioaccessibility of flavonoids and their ability to inhibit glucose transport in Caco-2 cells were investigated on Valencia orange fruit (OF), OJ, and OJ formulated with 1 and 2.8% DFs. DFs were either orange pomace (P) or commercial pulverized citrus pulp fiber (CF). Juice extraction and formulation with CF led to minimal loss of flavonoids compared to formulation with P (474 μmol/100 g for OF vs 315-368 μmol/100 g for OJ and OJ with CF, and 266-280 μmol/100 g for OJ with P). Addition of DFs led to similar or improved flavonoid bioaccessibility compared to OJ (9.5% in OJ vs 7.9-33.4% with DFs) but higher glucose transport in Caco-2 cells (0.45 μmol/min in OJ alone vs 0.64-0.94 μmol/min with DFs). This paradoxical effect was attributed to potential complexation of flavonoids and DFs, preventing flavonoids from interfering with glucose transport.

Abstract
Fruits and vegetables play an important role in human nutrition. Study of the contamination sources which result from farming activities is of importance. For this reason, a chitosan-graphene oxide nanocomposite film was prepared and implemented as the extractive phase in thin film microextraction of six organophosphate residues (OPPs) in the samples using high-performance liquid chromatography. The optimized method was validated and the limits of detection (0.7-1.2 µg l-1), limits of quantification (2.3-4.0 µg l-1) and linear dynamic range (2.0-1000.0 µg l-1) were obtained. Principal component analysis revealed clustering of the fruit and vegetable samples based on the selected (OPPs) into two groups of unwashed-unpeeled and peeled-washed. This mapping was further investigated using descriptive method of boxplot. Washing and peeling of the samples, reduced the presence of OPPs to half or one third of interquartile range found in the unpeeled and unwashed samples.

Abstract
Plant-derived food consumption has gained attention as potential intervention for the improvement of intestinal inflammatory diseases. Apple consumption has been shown to be effective at ameliorating intestinal inflammation symptoms. These beneficial effects have been related to (poly)phenols, including phloretin (Phlor) and its glycoside named phloridzin (Phldz). To deepen the modulatory effects of these molecules we studied: i) their influence on the synthesis of proinflammatory molecules (PGE2, IL-8, IL-6, MCP-1, and ICAM-1) in IL-1β-treated myofibroblasts of the colon CCD-18Co cell line, and ii) the inhibitory potential of the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The results showed that Phlor (10–50 μM) decreased the synthesis of PGE2 and IL-8 and the formation of AGEs by different mechanisms. It is concluded that Phlor and Phldz, compounds found exclusively in apples, are positively associated with potential beneficial effects of apple consumption.

Abstract
Citrus fruit production occupies a place of considerable importance in the economy of the world including Pakistan. Tristeza disease caused by Citrus Tristeza Virus (CTV) exists in various forms that may or may not cause symptoms in the plants. The bioactive compounds and antioxidants are naturally present in plants and provide a defense mechanism that is generally accelerated in response to a stress. The objective of the present study was to target and analyze the citrus plants that were CTV positive to observe the changes in the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants of citrus (Sweet Oranges only). It was observed that in response to CTV infection, both the non-enzymatic antioxidants (total flavonoid, ascorbic acid, phenolic acid) and enzymatic antioxidants (catalase, superoxide dismutase and peroxidase) activities showed an increasing trend overall. The profiling of antioxidants in response to a viral infection may help in the discovery of new biomarkers that can be used as a monitoring tool in disease management.

Abstract
Aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different drying techniques on chemical composition, color and antioxidant activity of kinnow peel. Fresh peel was dehydrated by three different techniques (tray, vacuum and freeze) and regardless of the method results showed significant decreases in moisture, total phenols, flavonoids, antioxidant activity and color when compared to the fresh sample. Freeze drying was found superior in retention of polyphenolic characteristics and color attributes when compared with other drying techniques. The fresh and freeze-dried citrus peel extract was analyzed for individual phenolics and flavonoids with the help of HPLC indicating highest concentrations of ferulic acid and hesperidin.

Abstract
This study followed the flesh reddening of Sanhua plum from the surface to the center during fruit development. Five key stages were identified based on color changes during fruit ripening: full-green (FG), red-appeared, half-red, full-red, and purple-red (PR). Fruits were collected and analyzed for phytochemicals and antioxidant properties. Concurrently, the transcript levels of genes associated with phenolic, flavonoid, and anthocyanin production were investigated. The titratable acid content of Sanhua plum decreased during development, while total soluble sugar content increased. In addition, both the total phenolic content and total flavonoid content decreased during development, while anthocyanin content increased. The polyphenol oxidase activity peaked in the PR stage. The maximum antioxidant activity in vitro was observed in the FG stage, while cellular antioxidant activity peaked in the PR stage.

Abstract
We previously developed red lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivars with high flavonoid and phenolic acid content and demonstrated their anti-diabetic effect. Here we report on developing three fertile and true-breeding lettuce lines enriched with flavonoids with reported beneficial health effects. These lines were identified in a segregating population of EMS-mutagenized red lettuce and characterized biochemically and genetically. Change in red coloration was used as a visual indicator of a mutation in a flavonoid pathway gene, leading to accumulation of flavonoid precursors of red anthocyanins. Pink-green kaempferol overproducing kfoA and kfoB mutants accumulated kaempferol to 0.6-1% of their dry weight, higher than in any vegetable reported. The yellow-green naringenin chalcone overproducing mutant (nco) accumulated naringenin chalcone, not previously reported in lettuce, to 1% dry weight, a level only observed in tomato peel. Kfo plants carried a mutation in the FLAVONOID-3' HYDROXYLASE (F3'H) gene, nco in CHALCONE ISOMERASE (CHI). This work demonstrates how non-GMO approaches can transform a common crop plant into a functional food with possible health benefits.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common public health issues worldwide. Oranges are the most popular fruit consumed in the world. Admittedly, flavonoids in oranges act as antioxidants and improve liver steatosis. However, oranges also are rich in fructose, which is a risk factor in the progress of NAFLD. Therefore, we hypothesize that orange intake may be a double-edged sword in the development of NAFLD. To our knowledge, there currently is little evidence of the effect of dietary orange intake on NAFLD. The aim of this study was to investigate how orange intake is related to NAFLD in a general adult population. METHODS We randomly recruited 27,214 adults into the Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study. NAFLD was diagnosed by liver ultrasonography. Raw orange intake was assessed by a validated self-administered food frequency questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between orange intake and the prevalence of NAFLD. RESULTS There was a 27.18% prevalence of NAFLD among the participants. Consumption of orange was positively associated with the prevalence of NAFLD after adjustment for all potential confounding factors (Ptrend = 0.04). The odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of the categories of orange intake in the NAFLD were 1.00 (reference) for less than once per week, 1.02 (0.95-1.11) for 1 to 6 times per week, and 1.17 (1.03-1.33) for ≥7 times per week, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The present study demonstrated that orange intake is positively associated with the prevalence of NAFLD.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine if dietary intake of foods rich in flavonoids, which have been shown to be inversely associated with chronic diseases, is associated with inflammatory processes. METHODS This analysis includes controls of case-control studies nested within the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC) who completed a validated food frequency questionnaire at cohort entry. Biomarkers were assessed in blood donated during follow-up (mean = 9.6 years). We used multivariate linear regression adjusted for potential confounders to estimate associations between intake of flavanones, flavonols, and isoflavones and levels of adiponectin, leptin, C-reactive protein, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α. RESULTS Among the 1,287 participants, the respective median intakes of flavanones, flavonols, and isoflavones were 26.5, 12.4, and 1.3 mg/day at cohort entry. With the exception of flavanone intake, which was statistically significantly inversely associated with adiponectin (p = 0.01) and IL-6 concentrations (p = 0.01), none of the examined flavonoids was related with levels of adipokines or inflammatory markers. Heterogeneity by ethnicity was only observed for flavonol intake and IL-10 (pinteraction = 0.04) and may be the result of multiple testing. These null findings were confirmed in a subset of participants who completed a second dietary history within 2.6 years of blood draw. CONCLUSION The current results do not support a consistent association between dietary intake of flavonoids and markers of inflammatory processes.

Abstract
This study aims to conduct a detailed investigation on four cultivars grown in northwest China, concentrating on the analysis of the bioactive contents, nutrients, heavy metal concentrations, and pesticide residue contents. Those Chinese jujubes consist of 51.99-71.75% edible part, 82.35-89.63% carbohydrates, 4.43-6.01% protein, 0.48-0.63% lipid, 2.80-4.80% polysaccharide, 45.64-88.97 mg/100 g ascorbic acid, 132.16-196.58 mg/100 g phenolics and 101.17-132.04 mg/100 g flavonoids in dry matter. In those four Chinese jujube cultivars, sulfur amino acids are the first limiting amino acids for adults, and aromatic amino acids are for children. The amount of heavy metal and pesticide residue concentrations in those jujubes was way below the limit. All four cultivars were found to have different nutritional values except for the carbohydrates; they had higher rates of carbohydrates and polysaccharide than those previously reported ones from Eastern China; and they are a better source for carbohydrates, vitamin C and functional amino acids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to demonstrate the efficacy of extract derived from Spinacia oleracea extract (SOE) in reversing bone loss induced by ovariectomy and bone healing properties in a drill-hole fracture model in rats. METHODS SOE was administered orally for 12 weeks in adult ovariectomized Sprague Dawley rats after inducing osteopenic condition. Bone micro-architecture, expressions of osteogenic and resorptive gene markers, biomechanical strength, new bone formation, and bone turnover markers were studied. Uterine histomorphometry was used to assess estrogenicity. Bone regeneration potential of SOE was assessed in a drill-hole fracture model. Fracture healing was assessed by calcein intensity and micro-CT analysis of callus at fracture region. RESULTS SOE prevented ovariectomy-induced bone loss as evident from 122% increase in bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) and 29% decline in Tb.Sp in femoral trabecular micro-architecture. This was corroborated by the more than twofold stimulation in the expression of osteogenic genes runt-related transcription factor 2, osterix, osteocalcin, bone morphogenetic protein 2, collagen-1. Furthermore in the fracture healing model, we observed a 25% increase in BV/TV and enhancement in calcein intensity at the fractured site. The extract when converted into dried deliverable Spinaceae oleracea granule (SOG) form accelerated bone regeneration at fracture site, which was more efficient as evident by a 39% increase in BV/TV. Transforming SOE into dried granules facilitated prolonged systemic availability, thus providing enhanced activity for a period of 14 days. CONCLUSIONS SOE treatment effectively prevents ovariectomy-induced bone loss and stimulated fracture healing in adult rats. The dried granular form of the extract of Spinaceae oleracea was effective in fracture healing at the same dose.

Abstract
In this work, we developed a sensitive and highly selective fluorescent approach for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) by taking advantage of the oxidative etching effect of iodine (I2) on the lysozyme-stabilized silver nanoclusters (dLys-AgNCs) with fluorescence quenching. I2 could be produced from the redox reaction between iodate (IO3-) and AA, and thus the fluorescence intensity of dLys-AgNCs was turned off significantly in the coexistence of IO3- and AA. The fluorescence quenching of dLys-AgNCs had a good linear relationship with AA concentration, which allowed the detection of AA in the range from 0.05 to 45.0 μmol L-1 with a detection limit of 20 nmol L-1. The quenching mechanism was elucidated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), zeta potential, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, confirming that the fluorescence quenching of the dLys-AgNCs was attributed to the oxidative etching of the in situ generated I2, inducing aggregation of the dLys-AgNCs probe by forming Ag@AgI nanocomposite. The dLys-AgNCs probe exhibited excellent selectivity for AA sensing over several common reducing agents tested. Moreover, this approach was extended to the detection of AA in orange juice and urine with recovery rates in the range of 96.0% (RSD: 4.11) to 100.9% (RSD: 3.28) and 94.5% (RSD: 6.40) to 99.2% (RSD: 5.36), respectively.

Abstract
Phytonutrients may play important roles in human health and yet only recently a few studies have described phytonutrient consumption patterns, using data obtained from daily consumption methods. We aimed to estimate the phytonutrient content in Taiwanese diets and analyzed main food sources of 10 major phytonutrients. In this study, food items and dietary data gathered with the 24-hour dietary recall from 2908 participants in the 2005–2008 Nutrition and Health Survey in Taiwan were used to create a food phytonutrient database with 933 plant-based foods through integrating database, literature search, and chemical analysis and to appraise phytonutrient consumption status of participants. SUDAAN (Survey Data Analysis) was used for generating weighted phytonutrient intake estimates and for statistical testing. In Taiwanese adults, ~20% met the recommended number of servings for fruits and 30% met that for vegetables from the Taiwan Food-Guide recommendations. However, only 7.4% consumed the recommended numbers for both fruits and vegetables. Those meeting the recommendations tended to be older and with more females compared with those who did not. Phytonutrient intake levels were higher in meeters than nonmeeters. More than 60% of α-carotene, lycopene, hesperetin, epigallocatechin 3-gallate, and isoflavones came from a single phytonutrient-specific food source. In addition, sweet potato leaf, spinach, and water spinach were among the top three sources of multiple phytonutrients. Cross-comparison between this study and two previous studies with similar methodology showed higher mean levels of lycopene and quercetin in the United States, anthocyanidins in Korea, and lutein and zeaxanthin in Taiwan. The Taiwanese phytonutrient pattern is different from that of the Korean and American. It would be interesting to relate phytonutrient patterns to health profiles in the future.

Abstract
SCOPE Buckwheat (BW) consumption has been associated with a broad range of health benefits: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer. These beneficial effects have been partially related to the presence of flavonoids. However, some of these compounds (i.e., rutin and quercetin) are metabolized in the gastrointestinal tract generating derived phenolic metabolites. In this study, we investigated the biological activity of rutin (Ru), quercetin (Q) an their derived phenolic metabolites 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (3,4-DHPAA), 3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid (3-HPAA), and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenylacetic acid (homovanillic acid, HVA). METHODS AND RESULTS Q showed the highest antioxidant and reducing activity, and Ru the maximum chelating activity (85.33%). Antioxidant activity of 3,4-DHPAA was 5-fold higher than that of HVA, whereas their reducing activity was similar. The formation of methylglyoxal (MGO)-BSA and glucose-BSA (advanced glycation end products) was inhibited by Ru (98.5 and 92.7%), Q (95.6 and 89.1%) and 3,4-DHPPA (84.4.6 and 77.5%). Furthermore, Q (10-50 μM) and Ru (1-50 μM) downregulated the release of PGE2 , IL-8 and MCP-1, molecules involved in the inflammatory response, in IL1β-inflamed myofibroblasts of colon CCD-18Co. CONCLUSION This study suggests that BW phytochemicals and their phenolic metabolites may be responsible for the beneficial effects against chronic diseases attributed to BW consumption.

Abstract
Background Nasturtium officinale is a traditional herb that is used for diuresis.
Objectives The aim of this study is to determine the effects of hydrophilic extract of
Nasturtium officinale on ethylene glycol-induced renal stone in male Wistar rats.
Materials and Methods In this study 32 male Wistar rats were randomly divided in six groups
and studied during 30 days. Two groups of negative and healthy control received 1%
ethylene glycol in water respectively. Low and high dose preventive groups, in addition
to 1% ethylene glycol, daily gavaged with 750 mg/kg and 1.5 g/kg of extract respectively.
All rats were hold in metabolic cages individually in days 0, 15 and 30 and 24-hour urine
samples were collected and checked for urinary parameters of stone formation. In 30th
day, rats were anesthetized with ether, and after taking serum sample from them, were
sacrificed and their kidneys were sent for pathological evaluation and for presence and
volume of calcium oxalate crystals.
Results Percentage of calcium oxalate crystals in negative control groups (75%), preventive
groups with low dose (28.6%) and high dose (57.1%) in comparison to healthy control
group (12.5%) increased (P < 0.05). In 30th day urinary oxalate concentration in preventive
and negative control groups were more than healthy control group (P < 0.05).
Conclusions This research showed that the Nasturtium officinale extract has no significant
effects in urinary and chemical parameters efficient in calcium oxalate stone crystals in rat
but its extract in low dose has some preventive effect on renal stone formation.

Abstract
Berries, especially members of several families, such as Rosaceae (strawberry, raspberry, blackberry), and Ericaceae (blueberry, cranberry), belong to the best dietary sources of bioactive compounds (BAC). They have delicious taste and flavor, have economic importance, and because of the antioxidant properties of BAC, they are of great interest also for nutritionists and food technologists due to the opportunity to use BAC as functional foods ingredients. The bioactive compounds in berries contain mainly phenolic compounds (phenolic acids, flavonoids, such as anthocyanins and flavonols, and tannins) and ascorbic acid. These compounds, either individually or combined, are responsible for various health benefits of berries, such as prevention of inflammation disorders, cardiovascular diseases, or protective effects to lower the risk of various cancers. In this review bioactive compounds of commonly consumed berries are described, as well as the factors influencing their antioxidant capacity and their health benefits.
