Abstract
Sulfamethazine (SMZ), a persistent antibiotic, is frequently detected in drinking water and milk. For this reason, our research aimed to develop a novel electrochemical sensor based on a magnetic nanocomposite supported on chitosan modified by 3-acetylindole through the formation of chitosan acetylindole Schiff base (Chs-Aci). The objective was to detect extremely low concentrations of SMZ in milk. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized by various techniques, including FT-IR, XRD, EDX, SEM, and TEM. To enhance the electrocatalytic efficiency for sensitive SMZ detection in food samples, a magnetic chitosan acetylindole nanocomposite (M-Chs-Aci) was employed as a modifier for a carbon paste electrode (CPE). The electrochemical measurements revealed that the M-Chs-Aci/CPE exhibits good electrocatalytic performance compared to a bare CPE. Moreover, low detection limit, repeatability, and stability were achieved at 0.021 μM, 3.83%, and 94.87%, respectively. Finally, the proposed M-Chs-Aci/CPE proved to be highly effective in detecting SMZ in milk samples. The obtained findings paved the way for the effective usability of M-Chs-Aci/CPE as a sensor for detecting SMZ in real samples, with acceptable recoveries of 95%-98.87%.

Abstract
Biopolymer-derived polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are a class of materials that have emerged as promising candidates for developing advanced electrochemical sensors due to their tunable properties, biocompatibility, cost-effective production, and high surface area. PECs are formed by combining positively and negatively charged polymers, resulting in a network with intriguing properties that can be tailored for specific sensing applications. The resultant PECs-based nanocomposites were used to modify the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) to detect the sulfamethazine (SFZ) antibiotic drug. In addition, electrochemical studies using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) are used to evaluate the SFZ detection ability. Similarly, various microscopic and spectroscopic studies investigated the nano composite's structural features and morphological behavior. The κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO modified GCE demonstrated excellent detection ability of SFZ with the nano molar range and without interference with similar structural components. Furthermore, the newly fabricated electrode κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO was derived from naturally available materials, water-soluble, low cost, biocompatible, exhibits good conductivity, and excellent catalytic properties. Finally, κ-CGN/P(Am-co-DMDAAc)-GO- modified GCE has versatile, practical applications for detecting SFZ in real-time samples and determining the efficacy of an antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Nowadays, incorrect apply of antibiotics to treat infections in honey has led to health risks for humans and antibiotic resistance. Current systematic review and meta-analysis conducted to study antibiotic residues in honey. Data were obtained through searching the databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and other internal databases. The pooled concentration of antibiotic residues was 5.032 (µg/kg) that ranged from 4.72 to 5.33 (µg/kg). The ranking of antibiotics concentration was found in order of fluoroquinolone (8.59 µg/kg) > tetracycline (5.68 µg/kg) > sulfonamides (5.54 µg/kg) > macrolides (4.19µg/kg), respectively. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method (37.9.7%), high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method (34.4%), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method (27.5.8%) were the most used methods in various studies. In order to avoid contamination, proper use of antibiotics, placement of hives at a suitable distance from agricultural environment, and regular control of antibiotic residues in honey seems to be necessary.

Abstract
Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is one of the antibiotics frequently found with low concentrations in water bodies including drinking water sources and foodstuffs contamination, which affects the environmental ecosystem and humans. Therefore, the detection of SMZ is necessary to protect the biosphere. This work provides an investigation of the SMZ oxidation process using the electrochemical method by hydrothermally synthesized Barium doped Zinc oxide (BZO) with nitrogen and boron-doped reduced graphene oxide (NBRGO). The BZO/NBRGO composite was characterized using FESEM, EDAX, HR-TEM, Raman-spectroscopy, XRD, and XPS. Further, an electrochemical investigation has also made use of EIS, CV, and DPV. The limit of detection (LOD) of the SMZ has been found 0.003 μM with high sensitivity of 12.804 µA µM-1 cm-2 and a linear range (0.01-711 μM). Additionally, the repeatability, reproducibility, and stability of the BZO/NBRGO electrode have an excellent outcome compared with other electrodes. These prepared BZO/NBRGO electrodes have been used for the determination of SMZ in milk and water sample with acceptable recoveries.

Abstract
A new Schiff base (H2L) generated from sulfamethazine (SMT), as well as its novel micro- and nanocomplexes with Ni(II) and Cd(II) metal ions, have been synthesized. The proposed structures of all isolated solid compounds were identified with physicochemical, spectral, and thermal techniques. Molar conductance studies confirmed that the metal complexes are not electrolytic. The molecular geometry located at the central metal ion was found to be square planar for the NiL2 and tetrahedral for the CdL2 complexes. The kinetic and thermal parameters were obtained using the Coats and Redfern approach. Coriandrum sativum (CS) in ethanol was used to create the eco-friendly Ni and Cd nanocomplexes. The size of the obtained nanoparticles was examined using PXRD and TEM, and found to be in the sub-nano range (3.07-4.61 nm). Furthermore, the TEM micrograph demonstrated a uniform and homogeneous surface morphology. The chemistry of the prepared nanocomplexes was studied using TGA and TEM techniques. The effect of temperature on the prepared nanocomplexes' size revealed a decrease in size by heating. Furthermore, the nanocomplexes' antimicrobial and anticancer properties were evaluated. The outcomes demonstrated that the nanocomplexes exhibited better antimicrobial properties. Moreover, the antitumor results showed that after heating, the Ni nanocomplex exhibited a substantial antitumor activity (IC50 = 1.280 g/mL), which was higher than the activity of cis-platin (IC50 = 1.714 g/mL). Finally, molecular-docking studies were performed to understand the evaluated compounds' ability to bind to methionine adenosyl-transferases (PDB ID: 5A19) in liver cancer and COVID-19 main protease (PDB ID: 6lu7) cell-proteins. The findings reveal that [NiL2]·1.5H2O2 has a higher binding energy of -37.5 kcal/mol with (PDB ID: 5A19) cell protein.

Abstract
The primary objective of this study was to describe the cytotoxicity on HEPG-2 cells and to study the COVID‑19 activities of the novel H2L ligand and its Cr and Cu nano-complexes. As well as exploring the chemistry of the prepared nano-complexes. In this paper novel Schiff base, N-(4, 6-dimethyl pyrimidin-2-yl)-4-(((2-hydroxyl naphthalene-1-y l) methylene) amino) benzene-sulfonamidesulfonyl) amide has been synthesized. The novel Schiff base H2L is used to synthesize novel nano and micro-complexes with CrCl2.6H2O and CuCl2.2H2O. The prepared ligand and micro complexes were interpreted by different spectroscopic techniques. The nano-sized Cr and Cu complexes were synthesized in an environmentally friendly manner using Coriandrum sativum (CS) media extract in ethanol. The structure, morphologies and particle size of the nano-sized complexes were determined using FT-IR, TEM, and PXRD. The results showed that the nano-domain complexes are on the Sub-nano scale. Furthermore, using TGA, we studied the effect of heat on the size of newly prepared nano-complexes. Experimental data were supported by DFT calculations. The findings revealed that the metal complexes investigated are more stable than the free ligand H2L. The antitumor activity was examined before and after heating the nano-complexes at 200 °C. The results reveal the Cr nano complex, after heating, exhibited strong antitumor activity with IC50 value (3.349 μg/ml). The tested Cu nano-complex shows good DNA cleavage. The liver cancer and COVID19 proteins were examined using molecular docking to identify the potential binding energy of inhibitors.

Abstract
Veterinary medicine uses antibiotics randomly for treatment and growth promotion. Milk of dairy animals contains substantial quantities of antibiotics that have harmful effects on health. It is therefore necessary to test commercially available milk using immunological, chromatographic, or microbiological methods to confirm the absence of antibiotic residues. This study aims to perform a microbiological test, followed by a quantitative confirmation analysis, on raw milk to assess the presence of antibiotic residues. Tests were conducted on 200 milk samples collected from markets and farms in Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The microbial inhibitor test (Delvotest SP-NT) revealed that 40 samples were positive for antibiotic residues. The positive samples were further tested using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) as a confirmatory quantitative test for 29 antibiotics that belong to five groups: tetracyclines, sulfonamides, fluoroquinolones, macrolides, and lactamases. Only four samples tested positive for oxytetracycline residues above the maximum residue limit. Based on these results, researchers suggest a monitoring system that considers both microbial and HPLC-MS/MS methods when detecting antibiotic residues in bovine milk. The analysis of risk to human health revealed that antibiotic residues at the detected levels do not pose any health risks to consumers.

Abstract
An ionic liquid-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (IL-DLLME) combined with magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) was developed for extraction of quinolones (quinolones) from honey and milk prior to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis. 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate was used as the extraction solvent and an effective adsorbent based on chitosan modified magnetic core-shell functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNTs-Fe3O4@SiO2-CS) nanoparticles was used to assist IL to adsorb quinolone residues in honey and milk samples. Extraction conditions were optimized through one-factor-at-a-time and response surface methodology using a Box-Behnken design. Under optimum conditions satisfactory linearity (R2 > 0.999) and high sensitivity (method limits of quantification were 4-8 μg kg-1 or μg L-1 in honey or milk samples) was achieved. The recoveries of quinolones in honey and milk ranged from 81.2 to 109%. Based on this study, the proposed method was employed for the determination of antibiotic residues in honey and milk samples.

Abstract
Determination and sensing of antibiotics in dairy products are the biggest challenges in the world. In continuation of our earlier study, a facile and novel determination method for the detection of sulfamethazine (SMZ) in cow milk has been developed using a glassy carbon electrode modified with graphene oxide decorated with Cu-Ag core-shell nanoparticles. The Cu-Ag core-shell nanoparticles and graphene oxide were synthesized and characterized via different techniques such as TEM, SEM, XRD and FTIR. The as-synthesized Cu-Ag core-shell nanoparticles were used for the decoration of the glassy carbon electrode modified with graphene oxide. The electroanalytical measurements including cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry were performed and compared with HPLC, which was utilized for the determination of SMZ in cow milk. The experimental conditions were optimized to obtain a well-defined response signal. The concentration linear range was 10-1000 μM and the limit of detection was 0.46 μM for S/N = 3. The obtained results show good agreement with HPLC reported data.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The milk bar is an emerging style of retail business that mainly produces pasteurized milk (PM) and other dairy products on-site in many large cities of the People's Republic of China. To date, no data about veterinary drug residues in PM samples produced from milk bars have been reported. The objective of this study was to investigate the safety of PM from a total of 182 PM samples collected from milk bars from 10 provincial capital cities and to analyze the residues of seven classes of 61 veterinary drugs. First, the chemical components were screened with test kits, and then the positive samples were further confirmed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The results showed that 15 (8.24%) samples were screened positive for veterinary drugs, and six drugs in 11 (6.04%) samples were confirmed. The veterinary drugs detected were penicillin G (2.20%), tetracycline (1.10%), tylosin (1.10%), amoxicillin (0.55%), oxytetracycline (0.55%), and gentamicin (0.55%), with maximum residue levels of 3.4, 11.9, 28.2, 3.0, 26.9, and 63.5 μg kg-1, respectively. Veterinary drug residues were detected as positive in 7 of 10 cities, with the highest detection rate as 14.29% in Urumqi. No positive samples were found in the cities of Nanjing, Tianjin, and Nanning. All detected drug levels were far below the maximum residue levels regulated by China, the European Union, and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. This suggests that the overall veterinary drug residues in PM in milk bars reached the safety code of the country. However, potential risks still exist, and continuous attention should be paid to guarantee the safety of this milk product in the future. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract
A nanocomposite based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was synthesized by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal method and applied in the determination of sulfamethazine (SMZ) in swine effluent using a glassy carbon (GC) electrode. The rGO-AuNPs nanocomposite was characterized morphologically, electrochemically and spectrochemically, showing that rGO was modified with the AuNPs. The GC/rGO-AuNPs electrode was optimized for the determination of SMZ, achieving detection limits of 0.1 μmol L−1. The proposed sensor was successfully applied to the determination of SMZ in synthetic swine effluent samples.

Abstract
The prevalence of two groups of antibiotics; namely penicillin and sulfonamides was studied in fresh milk available in Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. The milk samples (n = 140) were collected from three different sources; individual farmers, cottage dairies and organized dairies of Kathmandu valley. Qualitative and semi-quantitative analysis with rapid screening kits revealed that 23% samples were positive for antibiotic residues in the fresh milk for penicillin and sulfonamide groups (1-256 µg/kg). High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses detected 81% samples positive for amoxicillin (68-802 µg/kg), 41% for sulfadimethoxine (31-69 µg/kg), 27% for penicillin G (13-353 µg/kg), and 12% for ampicillin (0.5-92 µg/kg). Due to the precision and accuracy of liquid chromatography method, it detected more positive samples and consequently presented higher prevalence than the rapid screening kits. The antibiotic residues were found above the maximum residue limits that presented serious threat to consumer health and raised a serious concern regarding the implementation and monitoring of international regulations in developing countries.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of veterinary drug residues in raw milk from Hebei, the second-largest dairy production province in the People's Republic of China. A total of 192 raw milk samples were collected from 64 milk stations in seven districts. Twenty-eight veterinary drug residues were analyzed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry based on a China National Standard. Raw milk samples with multiple residues of veterinary drugs were not found in the present study. Residues of four veterinary drugs, penicillin G, sulfacetamide, trimethoprim, and lincomycin, were detected in 12 (6.25%) raw milk samples, with detection ratios of 1.04, 0.52, 3.13, and 1.56%, respectively. All veterinary drug residues detected were under the maximum residue levels as regulated by China, the European Union, the United States, and the Codex Alimentarius Commission. In general, raw milk from Hebei province was considered relatively safe for human consumption because of the low prevalence of veterinary drug residues. However, stringent control measurements for veterinary drug residues in raw milk are required because some veterinary drugs were detected in milk from some areas of Hebei province.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the occurrence of drug residues in the raw milk collected from individual farms and milk collection points during 2009–2010 in six different major regions of Kosovo (Prishtinë, Gjilan, Mitrovicë, Pejë, Gjakovë, Prizren). In the present study, a total of 1734 raw milk samples were collected, and qualitatively screened with two different tests, the Delvotest SP assay and an enzyme-linked receptor-binding assay (SNAP). Overall, 106 (6.11%) out of 1734 samples examined with Delvotest SP contained possible drug residues (5.12% and 7.51% of samples from 2009 and 2010, respectively). All suspect samples were further analyzed by three distinct enzyme-linked receptor-binding assays specific for β-lactams (new β-lactam test), tetracyclines (SNAP tetracycline test), and sulfonamides (SNAP sulfamethazine test). Only the new SNAP βlactam test detected residues in 40 out of 52 samples in 2009 and 54 out of 54 suspect samples in 2010. A confirmatory method based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to confirm the presence of β-lactam drug residues in samples detected by the enzyme-linked receptor-binding assay. Amoxicillin, penicillin G, and cloxacillin were the most frequently detected residues and were in a concentration range between 2.1 μg/kg and 1973 μg/kg. Seventeen of the positive samples exceeded the maximum residue levels for one or more β-lactam drug. The highest number of positive milk samples came from the Pejë Region (58.8%) and Gjakovë Region (23.5%), and the lowest number of positive samples originated from Gjilan (5.88%), with no positive samples detected in two regions, Mitrovicë and Prizren.

Abstract
The authors have developed a sensitive spectrophotometric method for determination of sulfonamide derivatives such as sulfanilamide (SAA), sulfadiazine (SDZ), sulfacetamide (SCT) sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfamerazine (SMR), sulfadimethoxine (SDX), sulfamethiazole (SMT) and Sulfathiazole (STZ). This method is based on the Bratton-Marshall reaction, which involves the diazotization of sulfonamides with sodium nitrite under acidic conditions, followed by coupling with N-(1-naphtyl) ethylenediamine dihydrochloride (NED) to form a pink colored compound. Therefore, the Bratton-Marshall method was modified by optimizing the reaction conditions, which allows us to determine a low concentration range of sulfonamides compared to the reported methods. The limits of detection and quantification obtained were 0.019-0.05 and 0.06-0.16μgmL-1, respectively. In comparison with other reported methods using different coupling agents, the proposed method was found to be the most simple and sensitive for sulfonamides determination. In this paper, the modified method was successfully employed for the determination of sulfonamides in drinking water, seawater and pharmaceutical and veterinary formulations. The purpose of this work is to optimize and develop a simple method for extraction and concentration of sulfonamides present as residues in seawater and their quantification with the recommended spectrophotometric method. Solid phase extraction (SPE) of sulfonamides from seawater samples was evaluated using Oasis HLB cartridges (3mL, 540mg). The recovery efficiency was investigated in the sulfonamides concentration range comprised between 0.19 and 126ngmL-1. The ease of use of this extraction method makes it very useful for routine laboratory work.

Abstract
Polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (POELE10)-Na2C4H4O6 aqueous two-phase extraction system (ATPES) is a novel and green pretreatment technique to trace samples. ATPES coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is used to analyze synchronously sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMT) in animal by-products (i.e., egg and milk) and environmental water sample. It was found that the extraction efficiency (E%) and the enrichment factor (F) of SDZ and SMT were influenced by the types of salts, the concentration of salt, the concentration of POELE10 and the temperature. The orthogonal experimental design (OED) was adopted in the multi-factor experiment to determine the optimized conditions. The final optimal condition was as following: the concentration of POELE10 is 0.027gmL(-1), the concentration of Na2C4H4O6 is 0.180gmL(-1) and the temperature is 35°C. This POELE10-Na2C4H4O6 ATPS was applied to separate and enrich SDZ and SMT in real samples (i.e., water, egg and milk) under the optimal conditions, and it was found that the recovery of SDZ and SMT was 96.20-99.52% with RSD of 0.35-3.41%. The limit of detection (LOD) of this method for the SDZ and SMT in spiked samples was 2.52-3.64pgmL(-1), and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) of this method for the SDZ and SMT in spiked samples was 8.41-12.15pgmL(-1).

Abstract
A new method for the rapid simultaneous determination of five sulfonamides in honey was developed using ultrasonic nebulization-assisted extraction coupled with hollow fiber liquid-liquid-liquid microextraction prior to liquid chromatography. In the present method, the sample solution was nebulized by ultrasonication. Sulfonamides in the aerosol particles were extracted by 1-octanol impregnated in the pores of a hollow fiber and further into the acceptor phase (acid solution, pH 2.0) contained in the lumen of the hollow fiber. Several experimental parameters that affect the extraction efficiency were optimized. The present method provides good recoveries (88.9-114.2%) and acceptable precision (<10.7%), indicating the effective extraction. The detection limits were 4.6-6.8 μg/kg, lower than the maximum residue limits of sulfonamides in honeys. Compared to the traditional extraction methods, the present method requires less organic solvent and operation time, demonstrating excellent cleanup ability and good enrichment efficiency.

Abstract
In this study, [Ni(dien)2]⋅smz2⋅(Hsmz: sulfamethazine and dien: diethylenetriamine) complex has been synthesized and its crystal structure has been determined by X-ray diffraction technique. The title complex crystallizes in orthorhombic system with space group Pbnb [a=8.556(5), b=16.228(5), c=28.209(5)Å, V=3917(3)Å(3) and Z=4]. The nickel(II) ion has distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The metal atom, which rides on a crystallographic center of symmetry, is coordinated by six nitrogen atoms of two dien ligands to form a discrete [Ni(dien)2](2+) unit, which captures two sulfamethazine ions, each through intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The powder EPR spectrum of Cu(2+) doped Ni(II) complex was recorded at room temperature. The vibrational investigation has been carried out by considering the characteristic bands related to the functional groups of the complex. The electrochemical behavior of Ni(II) ions in the presence and in the absence of smz and dien were studied by square wave and cyclic voltammetry. A well-defined irreversible peak at -1.112V different from those of the Ni(II)-smz (-0.876V) and the Ni(II)-dien complex (-1.064V) was observed in the solution containing Ni(II) ions, which was attributed to the formation of the new mixed ligand complex of Ni(II) with smz and dien.

Abstract
An automated, size-exclusion solid phase extraction (SPE)-UPLC-MS/MS protocol without pre-treatment of samples was developed to screen for four mycotoxins (OTA, ZEN, AFB1, and AFM1) in liquid milk and milk powder. Firstly, a mixed macropore-silica gel cartridge was established as a size-exclusion SPE column. The proposed methodology could be a candidate in green analytical chemistry because it saves on manpower and organic solvent. Permanent post-column infusion of mycotoxin standards was used to quantify matrix effects throughout the chromatographic run. Matrix-matched calibration could effectively compensate for matrix effects, which may be caused by liquid milk or milk powder matrix. Recovery of the four mycotoxins in fortified liquid milk was in the range 89-120% and RSD 2-9%. The LOD for the four mycotoxins in liquid milk and milk powder were 0.05-2 ng L(-1) and 0.25-10 ng kg(-1), respectively. The LOQ for the four mycotoxins in liquid milk and milk powder were 0.1-5 ng L(-1) and 0.5-25 ng kg(-1), respectively.

Abstract
The lack of well-established references for the validation of qualitative analyses and the increasing demand for reliable binary responses were the main motivating factors for this study. A detailed procedure for single-laboratory validation of qualitative methods is proposed. The experimental design and the tools for data analysis were based on the theoretical background, as well as the aspects of efficiency, convenience and simplicity. Four experimental steps were defined, as follows: (i) preliminary tests for the determination of the concentration range, (ii) a study of the rates, unreliability region, detection limit, and the accordance and concordance values, (iii) a study of the selectivity in the presence of known interferences, and (iv) a study of robustness. The applicability of the procedure was demonstrated by the validation of a qualitative commercial kit for detecting sulfonamide residues in raw milk using both the visual and instrumental reading techniques. Reliability rates of 100% were obtained for the blank samples. For the samples spiked with sulfamethazine at 10.8 and 108 μg L(-1) and with sulfadimethoxine or sulfathiazole at 10 and 100 μg L(-1), the reliability rates ranged from 93.3 to 100%. Selectivity was demonstrated using trimethoprim as a potential interferent. The method was considered robust for the factors of the temperature (54 and 58°C) and time (6 and 10 min) for incubating the test strips. The estimated detection limits and unreliability regions confirmed the suitability of the kit for this purpose, based on the legislated residue limits.

Abstract
In the present work, a combined experimental and theoretical study of the N-(4,6-Dimethyl-pyrimidin-2-yl)-4-[(2-hydroxy-benzylidene)amino]benzenesulfonamide ligand (H2L) and its mononuclear and magnetically diluted binuclear Cu(II) complexes has been performed using IR, TG/DTA, magnetic, EPR, and conductivity measurements. Calculated g-tensor values showed best agreement with experimental values from EPR when carried out using the MPW1PW91 functional. Coordination of H2L to a Cu(II) center, regardless of the binding site and Cu:L stoichiometry, leads to a significant decrease in the antibacterial activity compared to the free ligand as well as reference drugs in the case of Staphylococcus aureus. Structural-activity relationship suggests that ELUMO, ΔE, dipole moment, polarizability and electrophilicity index were the most significant descriptors for the correlation with the antibacterial activity.

Abstract
We have interrogated the characteristics of six pharmacologically active compounds in a hot gas chromatograph injector including some mass spectral characteristics in a quadrupole mass analyzer. The analytes are dimetridazole, metronidazole, chlorpromazine, trimethoprim, sulfamethazine, and dapsone. We have demonstrated the impact of the injector on the conversion efficiency of solvent to vapor in relation to analytes under investigation. The overall analytical performance of key parameters that were scrutinized and tested on a spiked raw sewer water sample using electron ionization (EI), positive chemical ionization (PCI), and negative chemical ionization (NCI) in the full and selected ion monitoring (SIM) scan modes are also presented. These parameters were the instrument detection limits (IDLs), method detection limits (MDLs), linearities, and percent recoveries. Correlation coefficients (R2) were greater than 0.9950 using all ionization and scan modes. Better MDLs were obtained using the SIM mode in all instances. The SIM mode MDLs ranged as follows: EI 0.308–0.711 and PCI 0.656–1.14 mg/L. Extremely good signals were observed in the NCI mode with dimetridazole and metronidazole where MDLs in the SIM mode were estimated to be 0.057 and 0.062 mg/L. Percent relative standard deviations (n = 3) were all less than 5% using EI employing full and SIM scan modes. Recoveries ranged from 55% to 96% in the full scan mode and from 67% to 94% in the SIM mode. Signal losses and ion population ratios in relation to the number of samples, i.e., scan speed and the mass scan range, are also interrogated.

In the present study, 199 raw milk samples were analysed for beta-lactams, tetracyclines, sulfonamides and quinolones. They were obtained from collection tanks of milk routes in 10 provinces of China. The occurrence and concentration range of the four antibiotics were investigated by competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods. At the detectable level, 0.5%, 47.2% and 20.1% of samples were positive for beta-lactams, quinolones and sulfonamides, respectively. No sample was positive for tetracyclines. Beta-lactams were positive only in Beijing while quinolones and sulfonamides were positive in all provinces. One (0.5%) sample for beta-lactams was above the maximum residue limits (MRLs, regulated by EU, CAC and China). The maximum concentrations for sulfonamides and quinolones were 16.28 µg kg⁻¹ and 23.25 µg kg⁻¹ which were under their maximum residue limits. More precaution should be taken on antibiotic controls because of the high detection rate of some antibiotics.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted to detect the presence of Salmonella spp., Candida albicans, Aspergillus spp., and antimicrobial residues in raw milk (n = 120) and processed cow milk (n = 20) from smallholder dairy farms from three sites in Zimbabwe. Culture and isolation of Salmonella spp., C. albicans, and Aspergillus spp. were performed using selective media, while antimicrobial residues were detected by a dye reduction test. No Salmonella, but C. albicans (17.5%; 21/120), Aspergillus spp. (0.8%; 1/120), and antimicrobial residues (2.5%; 3/120) were detected from raw milk. C. albicans was isolated from all three sites, while Aspergillus spp. and antimicrobial residues were detected from sites 1 and 3, respectively. From processed milk, only C. albicans (5%) was isolated while Aspergillus spp. and antimicrobial residues were not detected. These results suggested low prevalence of Salmonella spp. and Aspergillus spp. and a relatively high prevalence of C. albicans in raw milk from the smallholder farms. The potential public health risks of C. albicans and the detected antimicrobial residues need to be considered. Thus, educating farmers on improving milking hygiene and storage of milk and establishing programmes for monitoring antimicrobial residues may help to improve the safety of milk from smallholder farms.

Abstract
In this study, we assessed the degradation of the sulfonamides sulfapyridine (SPY) and sulfathiazole (STZ) by the white-rot fungus Trametes versicolor. Complete degradation was accomplished in fungal cultures at initial pollutant concentrations of approximately 10 mg L(-1), although a longer period of time was needed to completely remove STZ in comparison to SPY. When cytochrome P450 inhibitors were added to the fungal cultures, STZ degradation was partially suppressed, while no additional effect was observed for SPY. Experiments with purified laccase and laccase mediators caused the removal of greater than 75% of each antibiotic. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadupole time of flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QqTOF-MS) analyses allowed the identification of a total of eight degradation intermediates of SPY in both the in vivo and the laccase experiments, being its desulfonated moiety the commonly detected product. For STZ, a total of five products were identified. A fluidized bed reactor with T. versicolor pellets degraded a mixture of sulfonamides (SPY, STZ and sulfamethazine, SMZ) by greater than 94% each at a hydraulic residence time of 72 h. Because wastewater contains many diverse pollutants, these results highlight the potential of T. versicolor as a bioremediation agent not only for the removal of antibiotics but also for the elimination of a wide range of contaminants.
