Characteristics of the human contra- versus ipsilateral SII cortex

Suppression of perceptual sensitivity to digital nerve stimulation induced by afferent volley from digital nerve of contralateral homologous finger

The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether perceptual sensitivity to digital nerve stimulation is modulated by the afferent volley from the digital nerve of a contralateral finger. Fifteen healthy humans participated in this study. A test stimulus was given to the right-hand index finger, and a conditioning stimulus was given to one of the five fingers on the left hand 20, 30, or 40 ms before the test stimulus. The perceptual threshold of the finger stimulation was measured. The perceptual threshold of the test stimulus was significantly increased by a conditioning stimulus to the left-hand index finger given 40 ms before the test stimulus. In contrast, the threshold was not significantly changed by a conditioning stimulus to any finger other than the index finger. Perceptual sensitivity to digital nerve stimulation is suppressed by the afferent volley from the digital nerve of the contralateral homologous finger. This means that the afferent volley from the digital nerve suppresses the homologous finger representation in the ipsilateral somatosensory areas. These findings can be explained by the view that the afferent volley from the digital nerve of the index finger projects to the index finger representation in the contralateral primary sensory cortex and that the interhemispheric transcallosal inhibitory drive is provided from the secondary sensory cortex to the homologous finger representation in the contralateral secondary sensory cortex.

Comparison of Sensory Observation and Somatosensory Stimulation in Mirror Neurons and the Sensorimotor Network: A Task-Based fMRI Study

Objective

This study aimed to investigate brain plasticity by somatosensory stimulation (SS) and sensory observation (SO) based on mirror neuron and embodied cognition theory. Action observation therapy has been widely adopted for motor function improvement in post-stroke patients. However, it is uncertain whether the SO approach can also contribute to the recovery of sensorimotor function after stroke. In this study, we explored the therapeutic potential of SO for sensorimotor dysfunction and provided new evidence for neurorehabilitation.

Methods

Twenty-six healthy right-handed adults (12 men and 14 women), aged 18–27 (mean, 22.12; SD, 2.12) years were included. All subjects were evaluated with task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to discover the characteristics and differences in brain activation between SO and SS. We adopted a block design with two conditions during fMRI scanning: observing a sensory video of brushing (task condition A, defined as SO) and brushing subjects' right forearms while they watched a nonsense string (task condition B, defined as SS). One-sample t-tests were performed to identify brain regions and voxels activated for each task condition. A paired-sample t-test and conjunction analysis were performed to explore the differences and similarities between SO and SS.

Results

The task-based fMRI showed that the bilateral postcentral gyrus, left precentral gyrus, bilateral middle temporal gyrus, right supramarginal gyrus, and left supplementary motor area were significantly activated during SO or SS. In addition to these brain regions, SO could also activate areas containing mirror neurons, like the left inferior parietal gyrus.

Conclusion

SO could activate mirror neurons and sensorimotor network-related brain regions in healthy subjects like SS. Therefore, SO may be a promising novel therapeutic approach for sensorimotor dysfunction recovery in post-stroke patients.

Secondary somatosensory cortex evoked responses and 6-year neurodevelopmental outcome in extremely preterm children

OBJECTIVE

We assessed in extremely preterm born (EPB) children whether secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) responses recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) at term-equivalent age (TEA) correlate with neurodevelopmental outcome at age 6 years. Secondly, we assessed whether SII responses differ between 6-year-old EPB and term-born (TB) children.

METHODS

39 EPB children underwent MEG with tactile stimulation at TEA. At age 6 years, 32 EPB and 26 TB children underwent MEG including a sensorimotor task requiring attention and motor inhibition. SII responses to tactile stimulation were modeled with equivalent current dipoles. Neurological outcome, motor competence, and general cognitive ability were prospectively evaluated at age 6 years.

RESULTS

Unilaterally absent SII response at TEA was associated with abnormal motor competence in 6-year-old EPB children (p = 0.03). At age 6 years, SII responses were bilaterally detectable in most EPB (88%) and TB (92%) children (group comparison, p = 0.69). Motor inhibition was associated with decreased SII peak latencies in TB children, but EPB children lacked this effect (p = 0.02).

CONCLUSIONS

Unilateral absence of an SII response at TEA predicted poorer motor outcome in EPB children.

SIGNIFICANCE

Neurophysiological methods may provide new means for outcome prognostication in EPB children.

Comparison of Phase Synchronization Measures for Identifying Stimulus-Induced Functional Connectivity in Human Magnetoencephalographic and Simulated Data

Phase synchronization measures are widely used for investigating inter-regional functional connectivity (FC) of brain oscillations, but which phase synchronization measure should be chosen for a given experiment remains unclear. Using neuromagnetic brain signals recorded from healthy participants during somatosensory stimuli, we compared the performance of four phase synchronization measures, imaginary part of phase-locking value, imaginary part of coherency (ImCoh), phase lag index and weighted phase lag index (wPLI), for detecting stimulus-induced FCs between the contralateral primary and ipsilateral secondary somatosensory cortices. The analyses revealed that ImCoh exhibited the best performance for detecting stimulus-induced FCs, followed by the wPLI. We found that amplitude weighting, which is related to computing both ImCoh and wPLI, effectively attenuated the influence of noise contamination. A simulation study modeling noise-contaminated periodograms replicated these findings. The present results suggest that the amplitude-dependent measures, ImCoh followed by wPLI, may have the advantage in detecting stimulus-induced FCs.

Altered functional connectivity differs in stroke survivors with impaired touch sensation following left and right hemisphere lesions

One in two survivors experience impairment in touch sensation after stroke. The nature of this impairment is likely associated with changes associated with the functional somatosensory network of the brain; however few studies have examined this. In particular, the impact of lesioned hemisphere has not been investigated. We examined resting state functional connectivity in 28 stroke survivors, 14 with left hemisphere and 14 with right hemisphere lesion, and 14 healthy controls. Contra-lesional hands showed significantly decreased touch discrimination. Whole brain functional connectivity (FC) data was extracted from four seed regions, i.e. primary (S1) and secondary (S2) somatosensory cortices in both hemispheres. Whole brain FC maps and Laterality Indices (LI) were calculated for subgroups. Inter-hemispheric FC was greater in healthy controls compared to the combined stroke cohort from the left S1 seed and bilateral S2 seeds. The left lesion subgroup showed decreased FC, relative to controls, from left ipsi-lesional S1 to contra-lesional S1 and to distributed temporal, occipital and parietal regions. In comparison, the right lesion group showed decreased connectivity from contra-lesional left S1 and bilateral S2 to ipsi-lesional parietal operculum (S2), and to occipital and temporal regions. The right lesion group also showed increased intra-hemispheric FC from ipsi-lesional right S1 to inferior parietal regions compared to controls. In comparison to the left lesion group, those with right lesion showed greater intra-hemispheric connectivity from left S1 to left parietal and occipital regions and from right S1 to right angular and parietal regions. Laterality Indices were significantly greater for stroke subgroups relative to matched controls for contra-lesional S1 (left lesion group) and contra-lesional S2 (both groups). We provide evidence of altered functional connectivity within the somatosensory network, across both hemispheres, and to other networks in stroke survivors with impaired touch sensation. Hemisphere of lesion was associated with different patterns of altered functional connectivity within the somatosensory network and with related function was associated with different patterns of altered functional connectivity within the somatosensory network and with related functional networks.

The role of tactile afference in shaping motor behaviour and implications for prosthetic innovation

The present review focusses on how tactile somatosensory afference is encoded and processed, and how this information is interpreted and acted upon in terms of motor control. We relate the fundamental workings of the sensorimotor system to the rehabilitation of amputees using modern prosthetic interventions. Our sense of touch is central to our everyday lives, from allowing us to manipulate objects accurately to giving us a sense of self-embodiment. There are a variety of specialised cutaneous mechanoreceptive afferents, which differ in terms of type and density according to the skin site. In humans, there is a dense innervation of our hands, which is reflected in their vast over-representation in somatosensory and motor cortical areas. We review the accumulated evidence from animal and human studies about the precise interplay between the somatosensory and motor systems, which is highly integrated in many brain areas and often not separable. The glabrous hand skin provides exquisite, discriminative detail about touch, which is useful for refining movements. When these signals are disrupted, such as through injury or amputation, the consequences are considerable. The development of sensory feedback in prosthetics offers a promising avenue for the full integration of a missing body part. Real-time touch feedback from motor intentions aids in grip control and the ability to distinguish different surfaces, even introducing the possibility of pleasure in artificial touch. Thus, our knowledge from fundamental research into sensorimotor interactions should be used to develop more realistic and integrative prostheses.

Granger causal time-dependent source connectivity in the somatosensory network

Exploration of transient Granger causal interactions in neural sources of electrophysiological activities provides deeper insights into brain information processing mechanisms. However, the underlying neural patterns are confounded by time-dependent dynamics, non-stationarity and observational noise contamination. Here we investigate transient Granger causal interactions using source time-series of somatosensory evoked magnetoencephalographic (MEG) elicited by air puff stimulation of right index finger and recorded using 306-channel MEG from 21 healthy subjects. A new time-varying connectivity approach, combining renormalised partial directed coherence with state space modelling, is employed to estimate fast changing information flow among the sources. Source analysis confirmed that somatosensory evoked MEG was mainly generated from the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and bilateral secondary somatosensory cortices (SII). Transient Granger causality shows a serial processing of somatosensory information, 1) from contralateral SI to contralateral SII, 2) from contralateral SI to ipsilateral SII, 3) from contralateral SII to contralateral SI, and 4) from contralateral SII to ipsilateral SII. These results are consistent with established anatomical connectivity between somatosensory regions and previous source modeling results, thereby providing empirical validation of the time-varying connectivity analysis. We argue that the suggested approach provides novel information regarding transient cortical dynamic connectivity, which previous approaches could not assess.

Effect of changes in stimulus site on activation of the posterior parietal cortex

A previous functional magnetic resonance imaging study elucidated the specific activity of the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) during a two-point discrimination task compared with that during an intensity discrimination task Akatsuka et al. (Neuroimage 40: 852-858, 2008). If the posterior parietal cortex (PPC), including IPL, is responsible for detecting changes in stimulus sites, PPC activity depends on the level of change at stimulus sites. The aim of this study was to clarify whether a particular site exists that could detect changes in stimulus sites using the oddball paradigm. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields were recorded in 10 right-handed subjects. Three oddball conditions were performed by all subjects, with the probability of deviant and standard stimuli being 20 and 80 %, respectively, under all three conditions. Deviant stimuli were always presented to the second digit of the hand and standard stimuli were presented to the first (small deviance: SD) and fifth digits (medium deviance: MD) of the hand and the first digit of the toe (large deviance: LD). Inter-stimulus intervals were set at 500 ms. A brain electrical source analysis showed that activities of areas 1 and 3b elicited by the deviant stimuli were not significantly different among the three conditions. In contrast, PPC activity was significantly greater for LD than for SD and MD. PPC activity tended to increase with greater deviance at stimulus sites, but activities of areas 1 and 3b did not differ. These findings suggest that PPC may have a functional role in automatic change detection systems with regard to deviance of stimulus sites.

Intra- and inter-hemispheric effective connectivity in the human somatosensory cortex during pressure stimulation

Background

Slow-adapting type I (SA-I) afferents deliver sensory signals to the somatosensory cortex during low-frequency (or static) mechanical stimulation. It has been reported that the somatosensory projection from SA-I afferents is effective and reliable for object grasping and manipulation. Despite a large number of neuroimaging studies on cortical activation responding to tactile stimuli mediated by SA-I afferents, how sensory information of such tactile stimuli flows over the somatosensory cortex remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated tactile information processing of pressure stimuli between the primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices by measuring effective connectivity using dynamic causal modeling (DCM). We applied pressure stimuli for 3 s to the right index fingertip of healthy participants and acquired functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data using a 3T MRI system.

Results

DCM analysis revealed intra-hemispheric effective connectivity between the contralateral SI (cSI) and SII (cSII) characterized by both parallel (signal inputs to both cSI and cSII) and serial (signal transmission from cSI to cSII) pathways during pressure stimulation. DCM analysis also revealed inter-hemispheric effective connectivity among cSI, cSII, and the ipsilateral SII (iSII) characterized by serial (from cSI to cSII) and SII-level (from cSII to iSII) pathways during pressure stimulation.

Conclusions

Our results support a hierarchical somatosensory network that underlies processing of low-frequency tactile information. The network consists of parallel inputs to both cSI and cSII (intra-hemispheric), followed by serial pathways from cSI to cSII (intra-hemispheric) and from cSII to iSII (inter-hemispheric). Importantly, our results suggest that both serial and parallel processing take place in tactile information processing of static mechanical stimuli as well as highlighting the contribution of callosal transfer to bilateral neuronal interactions in SII.

Recovery mechanisms of somatosensory function in stroke patients: implications of brain imaging studies

Somatosensory dysfunction is associated with a high incidence of functional impairment and safety in patients with stroke. With developments in brain mapping techniques, many studies have addressed the recovery of various functions in such patients. However, relatively little is known about the mechanisms of recovery of somatosensory function. Based on the previous human studies, a review of 11 relevant studies on the mechanisms underlying the recovery of somatosensory function in stroke patients was conducted based on the following topics: (1) recovery of an injured somatosensory pathway, (2) peri-lesional reorganization, (3) contribution of the unaffected somatosensory cortex, (4) contribution of the secondary somatosensory cortex, and (5) mechanisms of recovery in patients with thalamic lesions. We believe that further studies in this field using combinations of diffusion tensor imaging, functional neuroimaging, and magnetoencephalography are needed. In addition, the clinical significance, critical period, and facilitatory strategies for each recovery mechanism should be clarified.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of bimanual integration in human somatosensory cortex and their relevance to bimanual object manipulation

Little is known about the spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical responses that integrate slightly asynchronous somatosensory inputs from both hands. This study aimed to clarify the timing and magnitude of interhemispheric interactions during early integration of bimanual somatosensory information in different somatosensory regions and their relevance for bimanual object manipulation and exploration. Using multi-fiber probabilistic diffusion tractography and MEG source analysis of conditioning-test (C-T) median nerve somatosensory evoked fields in healthy human subjects, we sought to extract measures of structural and effective callosal connectivity between different somatosensory cortical regions and correlated them with bimanual tactile task performance. Neuromagnetic responses were found in major somatosensory regions, i.e., primary somatosensory cortex SI, secondary somatosensory cortex SII, posterior parietal cortex, and premotor cortex. Contralateral to the test stimulus, SII activity was maximally suppressed by 51% at C-T intervals of 40 and 60 ms. This interhemispheric inhibition of the contralateral SII source activity correlated directly and topographically specifically with the fractional anisotropy of callosal fibers interconnecting SII. Thus, the putative pathway that mediated inhibitory interhemispheric interactions in SII was a transcallosal route from ipsilateral to contralateral SII. Moreover, interhemispheric inhibition of SII source activity correlated directly with bimanual tactile task performance. These findings were exclusive to SII. Our data suggest that early interhemispheric somatosensory integration primarily occurs in SII, is mediated by callosal fibers that interconnect homologous SII areas, and has behavioral importance for bimanual object manipulation and exploration.

Secondary sensory area SII is crucially involved in the preparation of familiar movements compared to movements never made before

Secondary sensorimotor regions are involved in sensorimotor integration and movement preparation. These regions take part in parietal-premotor circuitry that is not only active during motor execution but also during movement observation and imagery. This activation particularly occurs when observed movements belong to one's own motor repertoire, consistent with the finding that motor imagery only improves performance when one can actually make such movement. We aimed to investigate whether imagery or observation of a movement that was never made before causes parietal-premotor activation or that the ability to perform this movement is indeed a precondition. Nine subjects [group Already Knowing It (AKI)] could abduct their hallux (moving big toe outward). Seven subjects initially failed to make such movement (Absolute Zero A0 group). They had to imagine, observe, or execute this movement, whereas fMRI data were obtained both before and after training. Contrasting abduction observation between the AKI-group and A0-group showed increased left SII and supplementary motor area activation. Comparing the observation of hallux flexion with abduction showed increased bilateral SII activation in the A0 and not in the AKI group. Prolonged training resulted in equal performance and similar cerebral activation patterns in the two groups. Thereby, conjunction analysis of the correlations on subject's range of abduction during execution, imagery, and observation of hallux abduction showed exclusive bilateral SII activation. The reduced SII involvement in A0 may imply that effective interplay between sensory predictions and feedback does not take place without actual movement experience. However, this can be acquired by training.

Asymmetry in grasp force matching and sense of effort

While asymmetries in upper limb force matching have been observed, the mechanisms underlying asymmetry in the sense of effort have not been conceptualized. The aim of this study was to investigate asymmetries in the perception and reproduction of grasp force. Forty-two young adults, 22 right-handed (RH) and 20 left-handed (LH), were, respectively, divided into three groups according to differences between their right and left-hand strength (left stronger than right, right stronger than left and right & left equivalent). A reference force, representing 20% of the maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) produced by the right or left hand, was matched with same hand (Ipsilateral Remembered--IR) or opposite (Contralateral Remembered--CR) hand. The matching relative error was 92% (for RH) and 46% (for LH) greater in the CR than IR condition. Asymmetries in matching were significant for RH participants only in the CR condition and were dependent on right/left differences in hand strength as shown by the constant error (CE). For this RH population, right-hand overshoot of the left-hand reference and left-hand undershoot of the right-hand reference were significant when the right hand was stronger than the left. Asymmetry remained significant when CE was normalized (%MVC). Asymmetry was reduced when the strength of each hand was equivalent or when the left hand was stronger than the right. These findings suggest that effort perception is asymmetric in RH but not in LH individuals. The hand x strength interaction indicates that asymmetry in force matching is a consequence of both a difference in the respective cortical representations and motor components, which confer a different "gain" (input-output relationship) to each system. The similarity with position sense asymmetry suggests that the gain concept may be generalized to describe some functional/performance differences between the two hand/hemisphere systems. The more symmetrical performance of the LH than RH group underlines that context specific influence of handedness, hemisphere dominance and hemispheric interactions modulate performance symmetries/asymmetries.

Measurement of pharyngeal sensory cortical processing: technique and physiologic implications

BACKGROUND

Dysphagia is a major complication of different diseases affecting both the central and peripheral nervous system. Pharyngeal sensory impairment is one of the main features of neurogenic dysphagia. Therefore an objective technique to examine the cortical processing of pharyngeal sensory input would be a helpful diagnostic tool in this context. We developed a simple paradigm to perform pneumatic stimulation to both sides of the pharyngeal wall. Whole-head MEG was employed to study changes in cortical activation during this pharyngeal stimulation in nine healthy subjects. Data were analyzed by means of synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) and the group analysis of individual SAM data was performed using a permutation test.

RESULTS

Our results revealed bilateral activation of the caudolateral primary somatosensory cortex following sensory pharyngeal stimulation with a slight lateralization to the side of stimulation.

CONCLUSION

The method introduced here is simple and easy to perform and might be applicable in the clinical setting. The results are in keeping with previous findings showing bihemispheric involvement in the complex task of sensory pharyngeal processing. They might also explain changes in deglutition after hemispheric strokes. The ipsilaterally lateralized processing is surprising and needs further investigation.

Structural and functional asymmetry in the human parietal opercular cortex

In this combined electroencephalographic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study, the asymmetry of functional and structural measures in the human parietal operculum (PO) were investigated. Median nerve somatosensory evoked potential recordings showed maximum scalp potentials over contralateral (N80, N110) and ipsilateral (N100, N130) temporal electrode positions. In accordance, MRI-coregistered source analysis revealed two electrical sources in the contralateral (N80, N110) and two in the ipsilateral (N100, N130) PO. The dipole orientations of the contra- and ipsilateral sources with earlier peak activation, N80 and N100, were more tangential than those of the later peaking N110 and N130 sources. The most prominent contralateral N110 source exhibited pronounced left lateralized dipole strengths in the 80- to 120-ms latency range, in contrast to symmetrical N80 and ipsilateral source responses. The asymmetry of the N110 source activity explained both the asymmetry of N110 and N100 scalp potentials. Morphometric analysis demonstrated no interhemispheric differences in the sizes of the anterior PO (aPO), containing the cytoarchitectonic areas OP3 and OP4, but left lateralized sizes of the posterior PO (pPO), which encompasses the anatomically defined areas OP1 and OP2. The N110 source was located in the pPO and its asymmetry was significantly correlated with the structural pPO asymmetry but not with handedness and auditory lateralization. Thus both structural and functional asymmetries exist in the human PO and they are closely related to each other but not to measures of brain asymmetry in other functional systems, i.e., auditory lateralization and handedness.

Finger force perception during ipsilateral and contralateral force matching tasks

The aims of the present study were to compare matching performance between ipsilateral and contralateral finger force matching tasks and to examine the effect of handedness on finger force perception. Eleven subjects were instructed to produce reference forces by an instructed finger (index-I or little-L finger) and to reproduce the same amount force by the same or a different finger within the hand (i.e., ipsilateral matching task), or by a finger of the other hand (i.e., contralateral matching task). The results of the ipsilateral and contralateral tasks in the present study commonly showed that (1) the reference and matching forces were matched closely when the two forces were produced by the same or homologous finger(s) such as I/I task; (2) the weaker little finger underestimated the magnitude of reference force of the index finger (I/L task), even with the higher level of effort (relative force), but the two forces were matched when considering total finger forces; (3) the stronger index finger closely matched the reference force of the little finger with the lower level of relative force (i.e., L/I task); (4) when considering the constant errors, I/L tasks showed an underestimation and L/I tasks showed an overestimation compared to I/I tasks. There was no handedness effect during ipsilateral tasks. During the contralateral task, the dominant hand overestimated the force of the non-dominant hand, while the non-dominant hand attempted to match the absolute force of the dominant hand. The overall results support the notion that the absolute, rather than relative, finger force is perceived and reproduced during ipsilateral and contralateral finger force matching tasks, indicating the uniqueness of finger force perception.

Characteristics of sensori-motor interaction in the primary and secondary somatosensory cortices in humans: a magnetoencephalography study

We studied sensori-motor interaction in the primary (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) using magnetoencephalography. Since SII in both hemispheres was activated following unilateral stimulation, we analyzed SIIc (contralateral to stimulation) as well as SIIi (ipsilateral to stimulation). Four tasks were performed in human subjects in which a voluntary thumb movement of the left or right hand was combined with electrical stimulation applied to the index finger of the left or right hand: L(M)-L(S) (movement of the left thumb triggered stimulation to the left finger), L(M)-R(S) (movement of the left thumb triggered electrical stimulation to the right finger), R(M)-R(S) (movement of the right thumb triggered electrical stimulation to the right finger), and R(M)-L(S) (movement of the right thumb triggered electrical stimulation to the left finger). Stimulation to the index finger only (S condition) was also recorded. In SI, the amplitude of N20m and P35m was significantly attenuated in the R(M)-R(S) and L(M)-L(S) tasks compared with the S condition, but that for other tasks showed no change, corresponding to a conventional gating phenomenon. In SII, the R(M)-L(S) task significantly enhanced the amplitude of SIIc but reduced that of SIIi compared with the S condition. The L(M)-L(S) and R(M)-R(S) tasks caused a significant enhancement only in SIIi. The L(M)-R(S) task enhanced the amplitude only in SIIc. The laterality index showed that SII modulation with voluntary movement was more dominant in the hemisphere ipsilateral to movement but was not affected by the side of stimulation. These results provided the characteristics of activities in somatosensory cortices, a simple inhibition in SI but complicated changes in SII depending on the side of movement and stimulation, which may indicate the higher cognitive processing in SII.

fMRI reflects functional connectivity of human somatosensory cortex

Unilateral sensory stimulation reliably elicits contralateral somatotopic activation of primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortex. There is an ongoing debate about the occurrence and nature of concomitant ipsilateral SI and SII activation. Here we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in healthy human subjects with unilateral tactile stimulation of fingers and lips, to compare somatosensory activation patterns from distal and proximal body parts. We hypothesized that fMRI in humans should reflect the functional connectivity of somatosensory cortex as predicted by animal studies. We show that both unilateral finger and lip stimulations activate contra- and ipsilateral SI and SII cortices with high detection frequency. Correlations of BOLD-signals to the applied hemodynamic reference function were significantly higher in contralateral as compared to ipsilateral SI and SII cortices for both finger and lip stimulation, reflecting strong contribution of contralateral thalamocortical input. Furthermore, BOLD-signal correlations were higher in SI than in SII activations on the contralateral but not on the ipsilateral side. While these asymmetries within and across hemispheres were consistent for finger and lip stimulations, indicating analogous underlying organizing principles, they were less prominent for lip stimulation. Somatotopic organization was detected in SI but not in SII representations of fingers and lips. These results qualitatively and quantitatively support the prevalent concepts of anatomical and functional connectivity in the somatosensory system and therefore may allow interpretation of sensory evoked fMRI signals in terms of normal human brain function. Thus, the assessment of human somatosensory function with fMRI may permit in the future investigations of pathological conditions.

Conditioning transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation induces delayed gating effects on cortical response: A magnetoencephalographic study

The present study was undertaken to investigate after-effects of 7 Hz non-painful prolonged stimulation of the median nerve on somatosensory-evoked fields (SEFs). The working hypothesis that conditioning peripheral stimulations might produce delayed interfering ("gating") effects on the response of somatosensory cortex to test stimuli was evaluated. In the control condition, electrical thumb stimulation induced SEFs in ten subjects. In the experimental protocol, a conditioning median nerve stimulation at wrist preceded 6 electrical thumb stimulations. Equivalent current dipoles fitting SEFs modeled responses of contralateral primary area (SI) and bilateral secondary somatosensory areas (SII) following control and experimental conditions. Compared to the control condition, conditioning stimulation induced no amplitude modulation of SI response at the initial stimulus-related peak (20 ms). In contrast, later response from SI (35 ms) and response from SII were significantly weakened in amplitude. Gradual but fast recovery towards control amplitude levels was observed for the response from SI-P35, while a slightly slower cycle was featured from SII. These findings point to a delayed "gating" effect on the synchronization of somatosensory cortex after peripheral conditioning stimulations. This effect was found to be more lasting in SII area, as a possible reflection of its integrative role in sensory processing.

Objective examination for two-point stimulation using a somatosensory oddball paradigm: An MEG study

OBJECTIVE

To establish an objective two-point discrimination test using magnetoencephalography (MEG).

METHODS

First, we determined the discrimination threshold (DT) of the two-points. In the first experiment, we applied 0.9DT as standard stimuli, and 0.8DT, 1.1DT and 2DT as deviant stimuli in Conditions 1, 2 and 3, respectively. In the second experiment, we used 2DT and 0.9DT as the standard and deviant stimuli, respectively, in Condition 1. We applied two-stimuli that subjects felt as definitely one point or two-points in Condition 2 and 3, respectively.

RESULTS

In the first experiment, the components peaking around 30-70 and 150-250ms following deviant stimuli were significantly larger than those following standard stimuli. Considering the peak latency, these components seem consistent with the magnetic mismatch field (MMF). In the second experiment, the MMF was recorded only in Condition 1. Therefore, it is considered that the MMF was recorded only when subjects automatically discriminate one point from two-points stimuli.

CONCLUSIONS

This novel method can be used in neurophysiological two-point discrimination tests without the need to rely on the examiners' skills and subjects' reactions.

SIGNIFICANCE

We confirmed that our new method could be used for the objective examination of two-point spatial discrimination.

Lateralization of brain activity during lower limb joints movement. An fMRI study

Studies of unilateral finger movement in right-handed subjects have shown asymmetrical patterns of activation in primary motor cortex and subcortical regions. In order to investigate the existence of an analogous pattern during lower limb joints movements, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used. Eighteen healthy, right leg dominant volunteers participated in a motor block design study, performing unilateral right and left repetitive knee, ankle and toes flexion/extension movements. Aiming to relate lower limb joints activation to the well-described patterns of finger movement, serial finger-to-thumb opposition was also assessed. All movements were auditory paced at 72 beats/min (1.2 Hz). Brain activation during movement of the nondominant joints was more bilateral than during the same movement performed with the dominant joints. Finger movement had a stronger lateralized pattern of activation in comparison with lower limb joints, implying a different functional specialization. Differences were also evident between the joints of the lower limb. Ankle and toes movements elicited the same extend of MR signal change in the majority of the examined brain regions, whereas knee joint movement was associated with a different pattern. Finally, lateralization index in primary sensorimotor cortex and basal ganglia was significantly affected by the main effect of dominance, whereas the lateralization index in cerebellum was significantly affected by the joint main effect, demonstrating a lateralization index increase from proximal to distal joints.

Pre-movement modulation of tibial nerve SEPs caused by a self-initiated dorsiflexion

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the centrifugal effect on somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), we recorded the pre-movement modulation of SEPs following stimulation of the tibial nerve caused by a self-initiated dorsiflexion.

METHODS

SEPs following stimulation of the right tibial nerve at the popliteal fossa were recorded during self-initiated dorsiflexion of the right ankle every 5-7s. Based on the onset of Bereitschaftspotential and negative slope, the preparatory period before dorsiflexion was divided into four sub-periods (pre-BP, BP1a, BP1b and BP2 sub-period), and SEPs in each sub-period were averaged. SEPs were also recorded in a stationary condition.

RESULTS

P30, N40, P50 and N70 were identified at Cz in all subjects. The amplitude of P30 was significantly smaller in the BP2 sub-period than in the pre-BP sub-period. The N40 amplitude was significantly attenuated in the BP2 sub-period compared with the stationary condition, the pre-BP sub-period, the BP1a sub-period and the BP1b sub-period.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggested that the motor-related areas involved in generating negative slope modulated the tibial nerve SEPs preceding a self-initiated contraction of the agonist muscle.

SIGNIFICANCE

The centrifugal gating effect on SEPs extends to the somatosensory information from the antagonistic body part.

Cortical reorganization and somatic delusional psychosis: a magnetoencephalographic study

A woman complained of feeling a "metal-like thing" in her oral cavity 4 years after a stroke. She was convinced of the physical nature of her complaint despite intact dental and neurological findings. Somatosensory evoked magnetic fields suggested that her decreased right SII function was compensated for by the right SI region, probably contributing to the delusional symptom.

Differential modulation in human primary and secondary somatosensory cortices during the preparatory period of self-initiated finger movement

To elucidate the mechanisms underlying sensorimotor integration, we investigated modulation in the primary (SI) and secondary (SII) somatosensory cortices during the preparatory period of a self-initiated finger extension. Electrical stimulation of the right median nerve was applied continuously, while the subjects performed a self-initiated finger extension and were instructed not to pay attention to the stimulation. The preparatory period was divided into five sub-periods from the onset of the electromyogram to 3000 ms before movement and the magnetoencephalogram signals following stimulation in each sub-period were averaged. Multiple source analysis indicated that the equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) were located in SI and bilateral SII. Although the ECD moment for N 20 m (the upward deflection peaking at around 20 ms) was not significantly changed, that for P 30 m (the downward deflection peaking at around 30 m) was significantly smaller in the 0- to -500-ms sub-period than the -2000- to -3000-ms sub-period. As for SII, the ECD moment for the SII ipsilateral to movement showed no significant change, while that for the contralateral SII was significantly larger in the 0- to -500-ms sub-period than the -1500- to -2000-ms or -2000- to -3000-ms sub-period. The opposite effects of movement on SI and SII cortices indicated that these cortical areas play a different role in the function of the sensorimotor integration and are affected differently by the centrifugal process.

Time-efficient localization of the human secondary somatosensory cortex by functional magnetic resonance imaging

Standardized, robust and time-efficient localization of the human secondary somatosensory cortex (S2) is a challenge in clinical blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). A fully automated tactile stimulation was optimized in seven right-handed volunteers at 1.5 T for minimum scan time, high BOLD signals and robust localization of S2 by systematically varying the applied block-design. All volunteers had six different fMRI measurements of five stimulation-baseline-cycles (sbc) each with equal block duration that was changed between the measurements from 6 s to 30 s. Additional data sets of 4, 3 and 2 cycles were generated post hoc resulting in a total of 168 data sets that were evaluated individually for BOLD-signal intensity (dS%), correlation to the hemodynamic reference function (r) and Euclidean coordinates (x, y, z). Using different block-designs the S2 activation was highly variable regarding the localization rate (lr), the hemispheric symmetry and the BOLD-signals. The protocol with 3 cycles, a block duration (dp) of 15 s and a total scan time (dt) of 105 s most robustly localized S2 (contralateral: lr=71.4%, r=0.65, dS=1.01%; ipsilateral: lr=100%, r=0.6, dS=1.14%) whereas the most time-efficient protocol to localize SI (sbc=5, dp=6 s, dt=66 s) provided no robust localization of S2. Compared to other published fMRI protocols a scan time reduction up to 86% was achieved.

Functional MRI activation of somatosensory and motor cortices in a hand-grafted patient with early clinical sensorimotor recovery

The aim of this study was to investigate somatosensory and motor cortical activity with functional MRI (fMRI) in a hand-grafted patient with early clinical recovery. The patient had motor fMRI examinations before transplantation, and motor and passive tactile stimulations after surgery. His normal hand and a normal group were studied for comparison. A patient with complete brachial plexus palsy was studied to assess the lack of a fMRI signal in somatosensory areas in the case of total axonal disconnection. Stimulating the grafted hand revealed significant activation in the contralateral somatosensory cortical areas in all fMRI examinations. The activation was seen as early as 10 days after surgery; this effect cannot be explained by the known physiological mechanisms of nerve regeneration. Although an imagination effect cannot be excluded, the objective clinical recovery of sensory function led us to formulate the hypothesis that a connection to the somatosensory cortex was rapidly established. Additional cases and fundamental studies are needed to assess this hypothesis, but several observations were compatible with this explanation. Before surgery, imaginary motion of the amputated hand produced less intense responses than executed movements of the intact hand, whereas the normal activation pattern for right-handed subjects was found after surgery, in agreement with the good clinical motor recovery.

EEG source analysis and fMRI reveal two electrical sources in the fronto-parietal operculum during subepidermal finger stimulation

Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalographic (EEG) source dipole analysis in 10 normal subjects, two electrical source dipoles in the contralateral fronto-parietal operculum were identified during repetitive painful subepidermal stimulation of the right index finger. The anterior source dipole peaking at 79 +/- 8 ms (mean +/- SD) was located in the frontal operculum, and oriented tangentially toward the cortical surface. The posterior source dipole peaking at 118 +/- 12 ms was located in the upper bank of the Sylvian fissure corresponding to the second somatosensory cortex (S2). The orientations of the posterior source dipoles displayed large variability, but differed significantly (P < 0.05) from the orientations of the anterior source dipoles. Electrical sources and fMRI clusters were also observed in ipsilateral fronto-parietal operculum. However, due to low signal-to-noise ratio of ipsilateral EEG sources in individual recordings, separation of sources into anterior and posterior clusters was not performed. Combined fMRI and source dipole EEG analysis of individual data suggests the presence of two distinct electrical sources in the fronto-parietal operculum participating in processing of somatosensory stimuli. The anterior region of the fronto-parietal operculum shows earlier peak activation than the posterior region.

Validation of SOBI components from high-density EEG

Second-order blind identification (SOBI) is a blind source separation (BSS) algorithm that can be used to decompose mixtures of signals into a set of components or putative recovered sources. Previously, SOBI, as well as other BSS algorithms, has been applied to magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) data. These BSS algorithms have been shown to recover components that appear to be physiologically and neuroanatomically interpretable. While some proponents of these algorithms suggest that fundamental discoveries about the human brain might be made through the application of these techniques, validation of BSS components has not yet received sufficient attention. Here we present two experiments for validating SOBI-recovered components. The first takes advantage of the fact that noise sources associated with individual sensors can be objectively validated independently from the SOBI process. The second utilizes the fact that the time course and location of primary somatosensory (SI) cortex activation by median nerve stimulation have been extensively characterized using converging imaging methods. In this paper, using both known noise sources and highly constrained and well-characterized neuronal sources, we provide validation for SOBI decomposition of high-density EEG data. We show that SOBI is able to (1) recover known noise sources that were either spontaneously occurring or artificially induced; (2) recover neuronal sources activated by median nerve stimulation that were spatially and temporally consistent with estimates obtained from previous EEG, MEG, and fMRI studies; (3) improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs); and (4) reduce the level of subjectivity involved in the source localization process.

Excitability changes in human forearm corticospinal projections and spinal reflex pathways during rhythmic voluntary movement of the opposite limb

Rhythmic movements brought about by the contraction of muscles on one side of the body give rise to phase-locked changes in the excitability of the homologous motor pathways of the opposite limb. Such crossed facilitation should favour patterns of bimanual coordination in which homologous muscles are engaged simultaneously, and disrupt those in which the muscles are activated in an alternating fashion. In order to examine these issues, we obtained responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), to stimulation of the cervicomedullary junction (cervicomedullary-evoked potentials, CMEPs), to peripheral nerve stimulation (H-reflexes and f-waves), and elicited stretch reflexes in the relaxed right flexor carpi radialis (FCR) muscle during rhythmic (2 Hz) flexion and extension movements of the opposite (left) wrist. The potentials evoked by TMS in right FCR were potentiated during the phases of movement in which the left FCR was most strongly engaged. In contrast, CMEPs were unaffected by the movements of the opposite limb. These results suggest that there was systematic variation of the excitability of the motor cortex ipsilateral to the moving limb. H-reflexes and stretch reflexes recorded in right FCR were modulated in phase with the activation of left FCR. As the f-waves did not vary in corresponding fashion, it appears that the phasic modulation of the H-reflex was mediated by presynaptic inhibition of Ia afferents. The observation that both H-reflexes and f-waves were depressed markedly during movements of the opposite indicates that there may also have been postsynaptic inhibition or disfacilitation of the largest motor units. Our findings indicate that the patterned modulation of excitability in motor pathways that occurs during rhythmic movements of the opposite limb is mediated primarily by interhemispheric interactions between cortical motor areas.

Changes in somatosensory evoked responses by repetition of the median nerve stimulation

OBJECTIVE

We investigate the synaptic factor for the recovery function of evoked responses using a repetitive stimulation technique.

METHODS

Somatosensory evoked cortical magnetic field (SEF) was recorded following stimulation of the median nerve using single to 6-train stimulation in 8 healthy subjects. The SEF responses after each stimulus in the train stimulation were extracted by subtraction of the waveforms.

RESULTS

An attenuation of the SEF components was recognized after the second of the stimuli, but there was no significant attenuation with the third or later stimulations. The root mean square (RMS) of the 1M (peak latency at 20 ms after stimulation) and 4M (70 ms) components were smaller than that of the single stimulation during the train stimulation, while the 2M (30 ms) and 3M (45 ms) components were not attenuated, but the 3M was facilitated at the fourth to sixth stimulation.

CONCLUSION

The synaptic factor was not responsible for the attenuation of the SEF components during repetitive stimulation in healthy subjects. The SEF change disclosed a functional difference among the SEF components during the train stimulation, especially among the later components.

Magnetic fields in the human hippocampal area evoked by a somatosensory oddball task

We recorded neuromagnetic fields evoked by a somatosensory oddball task requiring subjects to discriminate target stimuli from nontarget stimuli, which are different in stimulation intensity, with a mental count of the target stimuli. A whole head type 80-channel magnetoencephalography (MEG) system with a 50-mm baseline gradiometer array was used. Targets and nontargets were somatosensory stimuli with an electrical current intensity of twice and three times the sensory threshold, respectively. The source current locations of the evoked magnetic fields in three dimensions and the equivalent current dipole (ECD) moments were calculated by using a single dipole model, assuming the brain as a sphere. In 28 of 63 recording sessions for 7 subjects, the loci of neuronal activities were observed in the left and/or right hippocampal areas. The latency of left hippocampal activity (293 +/- 49 ms) was significantly shorter than that of the right (333 +/- 45 ms) (P = 0.027, non-paired t-test). In view of previous studies that have shown the time window of sensory integration as approximately 200-300 ms, sensory information may be transferred to hippocampal areas following sensory integration.

Hemodynamic evoked response of the sensorimotor cortex measured noninvasively with near-infrared optical imaging

We have performed a noninvasive bilateral optical imaging study of the hemodynamic evoked response to unilateral finger opposition task, finger tactile, and electrical median nerve stimulation in the human sensorimotor cortex. This optical study shows the hemoglobin-evoked response to voluntary and nonvoluntary stimuli. We performed measurements on 10 healthy volunteers using block paradigms for motor, sensory, and electrical stimulations of the right and left hands separately. We analyzed the spatial/temporal features and the amplitude of the optical signal induced by cerebral activation during these three paradigms. We consistently found an increase (decrease) in the cerebral concentration of oxy-hemoglobin (deoxy-hemoglobin) at the cortical side contralateral to the stimulated side. We observed an optical response to activation that was larger in size and amplitude during voluntary motor task compared to the other two stimulations. The ipsilateral response was consistently smaller than the contralateral response, and even reversed (i.e., a decrease in oxy-hemoglobin, and an increase in deoxy-hemoglobin) in the case of the electrical stimulation. We observed a systemic contribution to the optical signal from the increase in the heart rate increase during stimulation, and we made a first attempt to subtract it from the evoked hemoglobin signal. Our findings based on optical imaging are in agreement with results in the literature obtained with positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Source activity in the human secondary somatosensory cortex depends on the size of corpus callosum

If corpus callosum (CC) mediates the activation of the secondary somatosensory area (SII) ipsilateral to the side of stimulation, then the peak latencies of the contra- and ipsilateral SII activity as well as the amplitude of the ipsilateral SII activity should correlate with the size of CC. Innocuous electrical stimuli of five different intensities were applied to the ventral surface of the right index finger in 15 right-handed men. EEG was recorded using 82 closely spaced electrodes. The size of CC and of seven callosal regions was measured from the mid-sagittal slice of a high-resolution anatomical MRI. The activation in the contralateral and ipsilateral SII was evaluated using spatio-temporal source analysis. At the strongest stimulus intensity, the size of the intermediate part of the callosal truncus correlated negatively with the interpeak latency of the sources in ipsi- and contralateral SII (r = -0.83, P < 0.01). Stepwise regression analysis showed that the large size of the intermediate truncus of CC was paralleled by a latency reduction of peak activity of the ipsilateral SII, whereas both contra- and ipsilateral peak latencies were positively correlated. The peak amplitude of the ipsilateral SII source correlated positively with the size of the intermediate truncus of CC, and with the peak amplitudes of sources in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and in the mesial frontal cortex. The results suggest that in right-handed neurologically normal men, the size of the intermediate callosal truncus contributes to the timing and amplitude of ipsilateral SII source activity.

Left-hemisphere-dominant SII activation after bilateral median nerve stimulation

We used bilateral median nerve stimuli to find out possible hemispheric dominance in the activation of the second somatosensory cortex, SII. Somatosensory evoked fields (SEFs) were recorded from 14 healthy adults (7 right-handed, 7 left-handed) with a 306-channel neuromagnetometer. Electrical stimuli were applied once every 3 s simultaneously either to the left and right median nerves at the wrists or to the palmar skin of both thumbs. Sources of SEFs were modeled with four current dipoles, located in the SI and SII cortices of both hemispheres. The SI activation strengths did not differ between the hemispheres, whereas the SII responses were significantly stronger in the left than in the right hemisphere. In right-handers, the left/right SII ratios were 1.9 and 1.8 for wrist and thumb stimuli, respectively. The corresponding values were 1.5 and 1.7 in left-handers. The results indicate handedness-independent functional specialization of the human SII cortices.

Timing and connectivity in the human somatosensory cortex from single trial mass electrical activity

Parallel-distributed processing is ubiquitous in the brain but often ignored by experimental designs and methods of analysis, which presuppose sequential and stereotypical brain activations. We introduce here a methodology that can effectively deal with sequential and distributed activity. Regional brain activations elicited by electrical median nerve stimulation are identified in tomographic estimates extracted from single trial magnetoencephalographic signals. Habituation is identified in both primary somatosensory cortex (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), often interrupted by resurgence of strong activations. Pattern analysis is used to identify single trials with homogeneous regional brain activations. Common activity patterns with well-defined connectivity are identified within each homogeneous group of single trials across the subjects studied. On the contralateral side one encounters distinct sets of single trials following identical stimuli. We observe in one set of trials sequential activation from SI to SII and insula with onset of SII at 60 msec, whereas in the other set simultaneous early co-activations of the same two areas.

Variation of temporal characteristics in human cerebral hemodynamic responses to electric median nerve stimulation: a near-infrared spectroscopic study

Using near-infrared spectroscopy, we studied cerebral hemodynamic responses to electric median nerve stimulation in ten subjects. The recordings were conducted by optical fibers placed over the left scalp. Electric stimuli were delivered to contra- and ipsilateral median nerves, respectively. Hemodynamic responses in the secondary somatosensory cortex were observed following each median nerve stimulation, except for three drowsy subjects. The contralateral stimulation tended to induce a larger response. The degree of change in oxygenated hemoglobin was hardly related to stimulus intensities, and was augmented by attention. Four subjects showed long-lasting responses throughout the stimulus periods, while three other subjects revealed transient responses. Thus, taking account of the temporal activation patterns is necessary for proper interpretation of the hemodynamic response following electric nerve stimulation.

Functional overlap of finger representations in human SI and SII cortices

We aimed to find out to what extent functional representations of different fingers of the two hands overlap at the human primary and secondary somatosensory cortices SI and SII. Somatosensory evoked fields (SEFs) were recorded with a 306-channel neuromagnetometer from 8 subjects. Tactile stimuli, produced by diaphragms driven by compressed air, were delivered to the fingertips in three different conditions. First, the right index finger was stimulated once every 2 s. Then two other stimuli were interspersed, in different sessions, to right- or left-hand fingers (thumb, middle finger, or ring finger) between the successive right index finger stimuli. Strengths of the responses to right index finger stimuli were evaluated in each condition. Responses to right index finger stimuli were modeled by three current dipoles, located at the contralateral SI and the SII cortices of both hemispheres. The earliest SI responses, peaking around 65 ms, were suppressed by 18% (P < 0.05) when the intervening stimuli were presented to the same hand; intervening stimuli to the other hand had no effect. The SII responses were bilaterally suppressed by intervening stimuli presented to either hand: in the left SII, the suppression was 39 and 42% (P < 0.01) and in the right SII 67 and 72% (P < 0.001) during left- and right-sided intervening stimuli, respectively. Left- and right-sided intervening stimuli affected similarly the SII responses and had no effect on the response latencies. The results indicate a strong and symmetric overlap of finger representations for both hands in the human SII cortices, and a weaker functional overlap for fingers of the same hand in the SI cortex.

Interaction of tactile input in the human primary and secondary somatosensory cortex--a magnetoencephalographic study

Interaction of simultaneous tactile input at two finger sites in primary (SI) and secondary somatosensory cortex (SII) was studied by whole-head magnetoencephalography. Short pressure pulses were delivered to fingers of the right and left hand at an interstimulus interval of 1.6 s. The first phalanx of the left digit 1 and four other sites were stimulated either separately or simultaneously. We compared four sites with increasing distance: the second phalanx of left digit 1, left digit 5, and digits 1 and 5 of the right hand. The temporal evolution of source activity in the contralateral SI and bilateral SII was calculated using spatiotemporal source analysis. Interaction was assessed by comparing the source activity during simultaneous stimulation with the sum of the source activities elicited by separate stimulation. Significant suppressive interaction was observed in contralateral SI only for stimuli at the same hand, decreasing with distance. In SII, all digits of the same and the opposite hand interacted significantly with left digit 1. When stimulating bilaterally, SII source waveforms closely resembled the time course of the response to separate stimulation of the opposite hand. Thus, in bilateral simultaneous stimulation, the contralateral input arriving first in SII appeared to inhibit the later ipsilateral input. Similarly, the separate response to input at two unilateral finger sites which arrived slightly earlier in SII dominated the simultaneous response. Our results confirm previous findings of considerable overlap in the cortical hand representation in SII and illustrate hemispheric specialization to contralateral input when simultaneous stimuli occur bilaterally.

Dynamics of mu-rhythm suppression caused by median nerve stimulation: a magnetoencephalographic study in human subjects

We studied event-related desynchronization (ERD) of the 8-13 Hz rhythm (mu rhythm) of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) caused by contra- and ipsilateral median-nerve stimulation. We used whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) and wavelet analysis together with our newly developed color-coded single-trial ERD display. The somatosensory stimuli suppressed mu rhythm at both contra- and ipsilateral SI, but the attenuation was clearly lateralized, being at least 20% stronger contra- than ipsilaterally. Moreover, repeated stimulation significantly reduced mu-rhythm ERD in the ipsilateral but not in the contralateral hemisphere in the course of the experiment. The observed lateralization is in agreement with the classical concept of a dominant role of the contralateral hemisphere in the processing of somatosensory information. The strong ipsilateral ERD in the beginning of the experiment may reflect the presence of non-specific arousal-like activation, which attenuates toward the end of the experiment.
