Abstract
Oral health is intricately related to systemic health, with new worldwide research demonstrating vitamin D's critical role in sustaining dental and periodontal health. Vitamin D regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism, which is required for the formation and maintenance of healthy teeth and bones. According to research, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to the etiology of periodontal disease by decreasing the host immune response, making it more susceptible to infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. Oral health in India is a tapestry of traditional practices, socioeconomic factors, lifestyle factors, and access to modern healthcare, all of which are intricately linked with the concept of habitus, which refers to deeply embedded habits, dispositions, and practices shaped by an individual's social space. Deep-rooted social and cultural influences have a substantial impact on oral hygiene practices, food patterns, and health-seeking behaviours. Oral diseases are considered as a worldwide health issue. Though standard Western medicine has had effectiveness in preventing and treating periodontal diseases and other oral disorders, the hunt for alternative solutions continues, and natural phytochemicals extracted from plants used in traditional medicine are regarded as viable alternatives to synthetic chemicals. India's traditional medical knowledge and practice, take a comprehensive approach to oral health, emphasizing the balance of physiological components and the use of natural treatments to maintain oral hygiene and treat oral disorders. However, the structural integrity of teeth and optimal oral health can be accomplished by combining Indian traditional medical practices with vitamin D supplementation, which has synergistic attributes for gum health, anti-inflammatory effects, and dental caries prevention. Nevertheless, the unique association of oral health, vitamin D deficiency and the habitus from Indian perspective is extremely underrepresented in academia. To the best of our knowledge, in the aforementioned context, the present narrative review is probably the maiden attempt to discern the crosstalk of oral health and Vitamin D from the perspectives of Indian habitus.

Abstract
Incorporating vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) into food is hampered by its high instability and low water solubility. Due to porous structure that favors absorption and carrying of micronutrients, brewer's spent yeast (BSY) is an economically and technically attractive alternative to overcome the shortcomings of vitamin D3 incorporation. Using heat and shear-sensitive ingredients and additives in formulations remains challenging due to the high-temperature and shear conditions during industrial processes, such as extrusion. This study aimed to produce an extruded plant-based meat product enriched with cholecalciferol. Vitamin D3, free and impregnated in BSY (BSY-VitD3), was blended with pea protein and subjected to cooking extrusion. Product features were analyzed for color, texture, moisture, water activity, absorption capacity, and vitamin retention. Adding BSY-VitD3 reduced all texture profile parameters and altered colors. Furthermore, free VitD3 enhanced extruded water and oil absorption capacity. After extrusion, vitamin retention percentages in the products were 45.4 and 91.6%, for free and BSY-VitD3, respectively. After 1-month storage of the extruded products, vitamin retention was 38.9 and 85.1% for free and BSY-VitD3 samples, respectively. Blending vitamin D3 with BSY is a simple, fast, and effective process to facilitate incorporation of the vitamin in the formulation and protect it during cooking extrusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vitamin D(VitD) deficiency has been found prevalent among patients with thyroid autoimmunity (TAI). This study aimed to investigate whether low VitD2 or VitD3 potentially contributed to the development of TAI in euthyroid male patients, which had not been reported before. METHODS A total of 2882 euthyroid male petroleum workers were recruited from those participants in the healthcare program at the second affiliated hospital of Dalian Medical University in 2021, whose serum VitD levels, thyroid functions, and autoantibody titers were all examined at the same time. Among them, 2587 (89.8%) individuals received the second health follow-up in 2022. Serum VitD including 25(OH)D2 (VitD2) and 25(OH)D3 (VitD3) levels were detected by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Thyroid functions and autoantibody titers were quantified using chemiluminescent immunoassays. RESULTS The serum levels of VitD and VitD3 were pronouncedly lower in the male euthyroid subjects with TAI (n = 195) than those non-TAI men (n = 2687, P < 0.05), whereas serum VitD2 was not significantly different based on the data from the initial investigation in 2021. The prevalence of subjects with TAI among the total male euthyroid subjects with TAI population was markedly increased with the decreasing levels of serum VitD and VitD3, respectively (P for trend < 0.05), but not significantly changed with that of serum VitD2. The binary logistic regression analysis revealed that either the deficiency of VitD (serum VitD < 20 ng/mL, VDD) or low VitD3 level was an independent risk factor for the development of TAI, which had been further demonstrated by the follow-up observation in 2022. Among the non-TAI men in 2021, 6.52% (n = 157) individuals became TAI patients after a one-year follow-up, and their serum VitD and VitD3 levels both exhibited significantly more reduction as compared with those of the remained non-TAI ones in 2022. More of those with VDD developed TAI than the non-VDD ones did in 2022 (8.5% vs. 5.6%, P<0.05). Additionally, the change in serum VitD over the two years was more strongly correlated with serum VitD3 (rs = 0.971, P < 0.001) when compared with that of VitD2 (rs = 0.085, P < 0.001) in the whole euthyroid male population. CONCLUSION Based on the cross-sectional and prospective investigations, our findings further indicate that VDD may be an independent risk factor for TAI development. Moreover, the latter is potentially associated with the deficiency of VitD3 rather than VitD2 in the euthyroid male population although the related mechanisms await in-depth exploration. Our findings also suggest that VitD3 supplementation might provide more potential benefits than VitD2 among VDD men in terms of preventing TAI development. Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a global health issue linked to various chronic diseases and overall mortality. It primarily arises from insufficient sunlight exposure, compounded by dietary limitations. Vitamin D fortification of commonly consumed foods has emerged as a viable public health intervention to address this deficiency. This review evaluates the impact of vitamin D food fortification on serum levels, intake, and health outcomes and explores the stability, bio-accessibility, bioavailability, and cost-effectiveness of such interventions. A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar, focusing on studies from 2015 to 2024. The criteria included primary research on healthy adults that addressed the effects of vitamin D fortification on health, intake, and serum levels, as well as the fortification's stability, bio-accessibility, bioavailability, and cost-effectiveness. Studies were extracted and analyzed according to PRISMA guidelines. The review included 31 studies from diverse geographic locations, revealing that fortifying dairy products, cereals, fats, oils, and other food items effectively increased serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. The fortification methods varied, with vitamin D3 showing superior efficacy over vitamin D2. Encapsulation techniques improved stability and bioavailability. Fortifying staple foods like milk and eggs proved cost-effective compared with pharmaceutical interventions. Vitamin D food fortification significantly enhances serum levels and intake, with dairy and cereals being the most frequently fortified. Standardized fortification guidelines are essential to ensure safety and efficacy. Ongoing evaluation and region-specific policies are crucial for effectively optimizing fortification strategies and addressing vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
Numerous observational studies have demonstrated a significant inverse association between vitamin D status and the risk of major chronic disease, including type 2 diabetes (T2D), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer. However, findings from Mendelian randomization (MR) studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest minimal or no benefit of increased vitamin D levels. We provide an overview of recent literature linking vitamin D to major chronic diseases. Because emerging evidence indicates a potential threshold effect of vitamin D, future well-designed studies focused on diverse populations with vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency are warranted for a more comprehensive understanding of the effect of maintaining sufficient vitamin D status on the prevention of major chronic diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS & AIMS This study aimed to investigate the association between vitamin D deficiency and covert hepatic encephalopathy (CHE), overt hepatic encephalopathy (OHE) occurrence, and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. METHODS This retrospective study reviewed 679 patients with cirrhosis. Vitamin D deficiency was defined as serum 25-hydorxyvitamin D (25-OHD) levels < 20 ng/mL. The associations between 25-OHD and CHE, OHE occurrence, and mortality were assessed using logistic regression, Fine-Gray competing risk regression, and Cox proportional hazards regression models, respectively. RESULTS Of 428 eligible patients, 75% had vitamin D deficiency and 23% had CHE. The prevalence of CHE was higher in patients with vitamin D deficiency than in those without vitamin D deficiency (28% vs. 13%, p = 0.002). During the median follow-up period of 2.3 years, 14% of the patients developed OHE and 27% died. Patients with vitamin D deficiency had a higher incidence of OHE (p = 0.002) and mortality (p = 0.006) than those without vitamin D deficiency. After adjustment for potential covariates, multivariate analyses showed that 25-OHE was associated with CHE (odds ratio, 0.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.91-0.99; p = 0.023), OHE occurrence (sub-distribution hazard ratio, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.86-0.98; p = 0.013) and mortality (hazard ratio, 0.96; 95% CI, 0.93-0.99; p = 0.020) in patients with cirrhosis. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent and is associated with CHE, OHE, and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Evaluation of vitamin D is essential to predict the outcomes of patients with cirrhosis.

Abstract
Evidence is increasing that vitamin D and CYP11A1-derived vitamin D, tachysterol, and lumisterol metabolites play a significant antioxidant role beyond its classical functions in bone health and calcium metabolism. Several recent studies have linked these elements to reduced oxidative stress as well as improved immune, cardiovascular, and neurological functions as a result of chronic kidney disease and cancer. Additionally, supplementation with this vitamin has been shown to be one of the most cost-effective micronutrient interventions worldwide, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic approach. The underlying mechanisms and implications of this antioxidant function of vitamin D or CYP11A1-derived vitamin D, tachysterol, and lumisterol metabolites are not well understood. This comprehensive and narrative review is aimed at summarizing the current evidence regarding the molecular mechanisms implicated in this antioxidant function of vitamin D, as well as to provide a general overview and to identify key research areas for the future, offering an extensive perspective that can guide both researchers and clinicians in the management of diseases associated with oxidative stress and/or insufficient vitamin D status.

Abstract
Vitamin D3 plays a crucial role in female reproduction. As research progresses, the mechanisms of action of vitamin D3 on follicular development have been widely discussed. Firstly, key enzymes involved in the synthesis and metabolism of vitamin D3 have been discovered in the ovary, suggesting that vitamin D3 can be synthesized and metabolized locally within the ovary. Additionally, the detection of vitamin D3 receptors (VDR) in follicles suggests that vitamin D3 may exert its effects by binding specifically to these receptors during follicular development. Further research indicates that vitamin D3 promotes follicular growth by enhancing the development of granulosa cells (GCs) and oocytes. Currently, the mechanism of action of vitamin D3 in follicular development is becoming increasingly clear. Vitamin D3 promotes oocyte development by regulating molecules involved in meiotic arrest in oocytes. It also enhances granulosa cell proliferation by stimulating steroid hormone synthesis and cell cycle regulation. Additionally, vitamin D3 exerts anti-inflammatory effects by reducing oxidative stress and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), mitigating the detrimental effects of inflammation on follicular development. These functions of vitamin D3 have clinical applications, such as in treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), improving female fertility, and enhancing outcomes in in vitro fertilization (IVF). This review summarizes the research progress on the role and mechanisms of vitamin D3 in follicular development and briefly summarizes its clinical applications.

Abstract
The spontaneous healing of critical-sized bone defects is often limited, posing an increased risk of complications and suboptimal outcomes. Osteogenesis, a complex process central to bone formation, relies significantly on the pivotal role of osteoblasts. Despite the well-established osteogenic properties of vitamin D3 (VD3), its lipophilic nature confines administration to oral or muscle injection routes. Therefore, a strategic therapeutic approach involves designing a multifunctional carrier to enhance efficacy, potentially incorporating it into the delivery system. Here, we introduce an innovative sterosome-based delivery system, utilizing palmitic acid (PA) and VD3, aimed at promoting osteogenic differentiation and facilitating post-defect bone regeneration. The delivery system exhibited robust physical characteristics, including excellent stability, loading efficiency, sustained drug release and high cellular uptake efficiency. Furthermore, comprehensive investigations demonstrated outstanding biocompatibility and osteogenic potential in both 2D and 3D in vitro settings. A critical-sized calvarial defect model in mice recapitulated the notable osteogenic effects of the sterosomes in vivo. Collectively, our research proposes a clinically applicable strategy for bone healing, leveraging PA/VD3 sterosomes as an efficient carrier to deliver VD3 and enhance bone regenerative effects.

Abstract
Studies have suggested that Vitamin D deficiency is associated with the occurrence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and that vitamin D-binding proteins (VDBP) are necessary for metabolic stress in pancreatic α-cells. However, the causal relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels, VDBP, and the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM) remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to investigate the causal relationship between 25(OH)D, VDBP, and DM. Relevant recent data were downloaded from the NHGRI-EBI Catalog of published genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and filtered for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We used multiple MR methods, including inverse variance weighting (IVW), and performed sensitivity analyses to detect whether pleiotropy or heterogeneity biased the results. There was a causal relationship between genetically predicted VDBP levels and serum 25(OH)D levels, and serum 25(OH)D levels increased with increasing VDBP levels (IVW: β = 0.111, OR = 1.117, 95% CI:1.076-1.162, P = 1.41 × 10-8). There was no causal relationship between the genetically predicted VDBP levels, serum 25(OH)D levels, and DM (VDBP: IVW β:0.001, OR:1.001, 95% CI:0.998-1.003, P > .05; 25(OH)D: IVW β: -0.009, OR:0.991, 95% CI:0.982-1.001, P = .068). Sensitivity analysis indicated that horizontal pleiotropy was unlikely to bias causality in this study. MR analysis results demonstrated a positive causal relationship between VDBP levels and serum 25(OH)D levels in the European population. The 25(OH)D and VDBP levels were not causally related to an increased risk of diabetes.

Abstract
Vitamin D is an essential fat-soluble vitamin produced in the skin during sun exposure. It plays a considerable role in musculoskeletal health and is largely responsible for the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism to maintain a healthy, mineralized skeleton. Optimizing bone mineral density in childhood and adolescence is essential to the foundation of skeletal health; however, the literature lacks consensus on values for normal, deficient, and insufficient serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels making supplementation and treatment somewhat challenging.The pediatric orthopaedic surgeon is important to optimizing bone health, particularly in the context of bony pathology/injury. Up to 60% of boys and 40% of girls sustain a fracture in childhood. On top of this baseline incidence, children with low vitamin D levels have been noted to be subject to a higher incidence of fractures from normal activities. While the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in children in the general population has been determined to be 9%, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in the pediatric fracture population can be as high as 75% and 61% of the pediatric population has been determined to have vitamin D insufficiency. The pediatric orthopedist also often is the first to diagnose nutritional rickets as these patients can present solely for complaints of limb deformity. Knowledge of appropriate evaluation, vitamin D supplementation, and indications for pediatric endocrinology referral is vital for the treatment of these patients.In the pediatric population, there is a lack of consensus regarding risk factors that warrant screening for vitamin D deficiency, determining insufficient thresholds, and identifying optimal supplementation recommendations and treatment dosages. More research is needed to clarify the ideal amounts of vitamin D necessary through critical growth periods to prevent rickets and to mitigate fracture risk. Regardless, pediatric Orthopaedic surgeons should promote supplementation to all children and treat diagnosed vitamin D deficiency. Abstract
Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is a critical process in dental alignment, driven by the application of calibrated orthodontic forces. This study delves into the intricate molecular and cellular mechanisms by which vitamin D3 influences OTM. Vitamin D3 is identified as a critical regulator in bone metabolism, enhancing osteoblast activity and bone formation while also modulating osteoclast quantity and RANKL expression, essential for the remodeling of the alveolar bone. The precise mechanisms through which vitamin D3 facilitates these processes are explored, highlighting its potential in accelerating bone remodeling and, consequently, tooth alignment. This comprehensive review underscores vitamin D3's anabolic impact on bone metabolism and its pivotal role in the synthesis and mineralization processes governed by osteoblasts. The findings illuminate vitamin D3's promise in augmenting orthodontic therapy, suggesting its utility in improving treatment efficiency and reducing duration. However, the need for further research into the optimal application of vitamin D3 in orthodontics is emphasized, particularly concerning dosage, timing, and delivery methods.

Abstract
Uncertainty remains about the composition of contemporary plant-based diets and whether they provide recommended nutrient intakes. We established Feeding the Future (FEED), an up-to-date online cohort of UK adults following different plant-based diets and diets containing meat and fish. We recruited 6342 participants aged 18-99 [omnivores (1562), flexitarians (1349), pescatarians (568), vegetarians (1292), and vegans (1571)] between February 2022 and December 2023, and measured diet using a food frequency questionnaire and free text. We compared personal characteristics and dietary intakes between diet groups and assessed compliance with dietary guidelines. Most participants met UK dietary recommendations for fruit and vegetables, sodium, and protein, although protein intakes were lowest among vegetarians and vegans. Omnivores did not meet the fibre recommendation and only vegans met the saturated fat recommendation. All diet groups exceeded the free sugars recommendation. Higher proportions of vegetarians and vegans were below the estimated average requirements (EARs) for zinc, iodine, selenium, and, in vegans, vitamins A and B12, whereas calcium intakes were similar across the diet groups. People following plant-based diets showed good compliance with most dietary targets, and their risk for inadequate intakes of certain nutrients might be mitigated by improved dietary choices and/or food fortification.

Abstract
Current global estimation suggests that about 10% of adults worldwide have diabetes, thus, various strategies are needed to address the issue, including dietary factors such as vitamin D. Various studies have suggested an inverse associations between vitamin D and the risks and pathogenesis of all forms of diabetes (type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes). The underlying mechanism is not fully understood; however, the expression of vitamin D receptors in pancreatic beta cells suggests an important physiological role for vitamin D in beta cell function. Vitamin D deficiency may impair blood glucose control and decrease insulin sensitivity by reducing insulin secretion from beta cells. Many studies suggest that vitamin D intervention may be beneficial; however, there is inconclusive evidence of the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation on reducing the risks or managing the pathogenesis of all forms of diabetes. Part of the pathogenesis of vitamin D for reducing diabetes is thought to be related to its impact on gut microbiota profile, via the suggested prebiotic properties of vitamin D.

Abstract
PURPOSE The relationship between circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and pancreatic cancer has been well studied but remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the association between circulating 25(OH)D and pancreatic cancer by using a meta-analytic approach. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and Wed of Science databases were searched through October 15, 2022. A random or fixed-effects model was used to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR), risk ratio (RR), hazard ratio (HR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS A total of 16 studies including 529,917 participants met the inclusion criteria, of which 10 reported incidence and 6 reported mortality. For the highest versus lowest categories of circulating 25(OH)D, the pooled OR of pancreatic cancer incidence in case-control studies was 0.98 (95% CI 0.69-1.27), and the pooled HRs of pancreatic cancer mortality in cohort and case-control studies were 0.64 (95% CI 0.45-0.82) and 0.78 (95% CI 0.62-0.95), respectively. The leave-one-out sensitivity analyses found no outliers and Galbraith plots indicated no substantial heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Evidence from this meta-analysis suggested that high circulating 25(OH)D levels may be associated with decreased mortality but not incidence of pancreatic cancer. Our findings may provide some clues for the treatment of pancreatic cancer and remind us to be cautious about widespread vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of pancreatic cancer.

Abstract
Background/purpose The relationship between Vitamin D (VD) and periodontitis in patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) was unclear. This study was to investigate the relationship between VD and periodontitis in MetS patients. Materials and methods This cross-sectional study collected the data of 2165 MetS patients from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The weighted univariate and multivariable Logistic regression models were applied to identify covariates and evaluate the association between 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) [25(OH)D]2 + 25(OH)D3 and periodontitis in patients. Odds ratio (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] was effect size. Subgroup analysis was performed in people with or without diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and central obesity groups. Results In the unadjusted model, compared with patients with 25(OH)D2 + 25(OH)D3 < 50 nmol/L, those with 25(OH)D2 + 25(OH)D3 ≥ 50 nmol/L might be associated with decreased risk of periodontitis in MetS patients (OR = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.57-0.85). After adjusting for confounders including age, gender, race, education, poverty income ratio (PIR), smoking, diabetes, VD intake and supplement and number of missing teeth, 25(OH)D2 + 25(OH)D3 ≥ 50 nmol/L was correlated with reduced risk of periodontitis in MetS patients (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.60-0.97). Subgroup analysis revealed that in patients with CVD (OR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.37-0.98), dyslipidemia (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.57-0.97), and patients with central obesity (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.57-0.95), decreased risk of periodontitis was identified in 25(OH)D2 + 25(OH)D3 ≥ 50 nmol/L. Conclusion VD was associated with the risk of periodontitis in patients with MetS, which suggest the importance of VD supplement in patients with MetS and provide a reference for the management of periodontitis in patients with MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is an importance preventable problem in the global and associates with lack levels of awareness about vitamin D. According to prior studies, in the Arab world, there is low of knowledge and awareness toward vitamin D deficiency. The target of our study is evaluating the knowledge level about vitamin D deficiency and determining the associated factors with levels of awareness of its. METHOD This online cross-sectional study was performed in Syria between 25 February to 29 March 2023 to assess the levels of knowledge about vitamin D deficiency among general Syrian population. The study's survey was obtained from previously published research and we conducted a pilot study to assure the validity and clarity questionnaire. All Syrian individuals aged 18 or older who were able to read and write and willing to participate were included, while, non-Syrian nationality individuals and all medical staff (doctors, nurses, and medical students…), as well, those under 18 age were excluded. The questionnaire consisted of 23 questions separated into four categories. The first section was sociodemographic information of the study population. The second section measured the level awareness of the study population regarding the benefits of vitamin D. In addition, the third and fourth part evaluated knowing of the respondents about sources of and toxicity consequences of vitamin D. The data were analyzed by utilizing multivariate logistic regression in IBM, SPSS V.28 version. RESULTS Overall, 3172 of the study population accepted to participate in this research and 57.9% the majority of them were aged in the range among 18 and 28. While, the average age of the respondents were 30.80 ± 11.957. Regarding with the awareness toward knowledge of advantages and source of vitamin D and outcomes of vitamin D toxicity. Most of the participants mentioned that vitamin D is used to treat bone disease and rickets and contributes in maintaining calcium and phosphates (91.4% and 84.6%, respectively). Whereas, more than half of them reported that sun exposure does not cause vitamin D poisoning and that vegetarians are more likelihood to have vitamin D than non-vegetarians, (54.1% and 54.9%, respectively). Only, age and occupation out of nine predictors variables were significantly correlated with adequate knowledge of Vitamin D (p-value < 0.05). The respondents aged more than 60 years were high probability to have good recognition of Vitamin D than participants aged between 18 and 28 years. (OR = 7.95). Retired participants have shown lower aware of Vitamin D 0.38 times than students. CONCLUSION Our research revealed that most of the participated individuals have sufficient comprehension about vitamin D, despite, there were significant gap. Health education via programs by government health-care agencies, NGOs and social workers is necessary to increase the awareness and knowledge toward benefits, source, deficiency and toxicity of vitamin D to avoid injury several diseases such as rickets.

Abstract
Quantitative analysis of the biologically-active metabolites of vitamin D (VitD), which are crucial in regulating various physiological and pathological processes, is important for clinical investigations. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) has been widely used for this purpose but existing LC-MS methods face challenges in achieving highly sensitive and accurate quantification of low-abundance VitD metabolites while maintaining high throughput and robustness. Here we developed a novel pipeline that combines a trapping-micro-LC-(T-µLC) with narrow-window-isolation selected-reaction monitoring MS(NWI-SRM) for ultra-sensitive, robust and high-throughput quantification of VitD metabolites in serum samples after derivatization. The selective-trapping and delivery approach efficiently removes matrix components, enabling high-capacity sample loading and enhancing sensitivity, throughput, and robustness. The NWI-SRM further improves the sensitivity by providing high selectivity. The lower limits of quantification (LOQs) achieved were markedly lower than any existing LC-MS methods: 1.0 pg/mL for 1,25(OH)2D3, 5.0 pg/mL for 24,25(OH)2D3, 30 pg/mL for both 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3, all within a 9-min cycle. The method is applied to quantify VitD metabolites from 218 patients with multiple sclerosis. This study revealed negative correlations(r=- 0.44 to - 0.51) between the levels of 25(OH)D2 and all the three D3 metabolites in multiple sclerosis patients.

Abstract
The current HPLC methods for the quantification of vitamin D3 (VitD3) and its two isomers previtamin D3 (PreVitD3) and trans-vitamin D3 (trans-VitD3) in olive oil preparations present some limitations mainly due to peak overlapping of the oily matrix components with the compounds of interest. The use of two-dimensional liquid chromatography (2D-LC) with different retention mechanism can reach higher resolving power thus allowing the analysis of complex samples. The present paper proposes a new alternative method including a solid phase extraction sample preparation step and a two-dimensional liquid chromatographic analysis using routine instrumentation, fitting the needs of quality assurance and quality control laboratories of pharmaceutical companies. The extraction protocol was demonstrated to provide a clean-up of the sample and a quantitative recovery of the species of interest. The 2D method proved its suitability in the isolation of vitamins from oil components in the first dimension and the separation and quantification of the analytes in the second dimension thanks to the orthogonal selectivities of phenyl and porous graphitic carbon (PGC) stationary phases. The method was validated following ICH guidelines and possesses an adequate sensitivity to quantify the impurity trans-VitD3 in pharmaceuticals considering the limits imposed by regulatory agencies. The applicability of the phenyl x PGC 2D-LC-UV method to quality control of medicinal products based on VitD3 in olive oil was confirmed by the successful quantification of vitamins in olive oil formulations.

Abstract
Introduction Rare studies have been done to investigate the association between dietary intakes of vitamin D and the risk of mental health disorders among athletes. The current study aimed to investigate the association between this vitamin intake and the risk of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders among a group of Iranian physically active adults. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted among 690 healthy athletes (18-50 years, mean BMI between 20 and 30) in Kashan, Iran. The usual dietary intake of participants was assessed by a 147-item FFQ. Depression was assessed by the Beck Depression Inventory-II (21-item), anxiety by the Beck Anxiety Inventory (21-item), and sleep disorders by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaires. Statistical analyses were done by using SPSS version 18. p values < 0.05 were considered significant. Results No significant association was found between vitamin D dietary intake and risk of depression in the full-adjusted model (OR: 0.96, 95% CI: 0.62, 1.51). In contrast, participants at the highest tertile of vitamin D consumption had a 49% lower risk of anxiety than those at the lowest tertile (OR: 0.51, 95%: 0.29, 0.87). Moreover, a significant 46% lower risk of sleep disorders was found among those with the highest intake of vitamin D in comparison to participants with the lowest intake (OR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.37, 0.78). Conclusion We found a significant association between dietary vitamin D intake and reduced risk of anxiety and sleep disorders, but not with depression, in this study. Further prospective studies are recommended for future investigations.

Abstract
The definition of "Vitamin D" encompasses a group of fat-soluble steroid compounds of different origins with similar chemical structures and the same biological effects. Vitamin D deficiency and/or a defect in the process of its synthesis or transport predispose individuals to several types of rickets. In addition to cholecalciferol, ergocalciferol, and vitamins D3 and D2, there are also active metabolites for the treatment of this condition which are commercially available. Calcitriol and aphacalcidiol are active metabolites that do not require the renal activation step, which is required with calcifediol, or hepatic activation. The purpose of this review is to summarize current approaches to the treatment of rickets for generalist physicians, focusing on the best vitamin D form to be used in each type, or, in the case of X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH), on both conventional and innovative monoclonal antibody treatments.

Abstract
Limited studies have demonstrated that inorganic arsenic exposure is positively associated with serum vitamin D levels, although the correlation between urinary arsenic species and serum vitamin D has not been investigated in areas of water-borne arsenicosis. A cross-sectional study of 762 participants was conducted in Wenshui Country, Shanxi Province, a water-borne arsenicosis area. The results showed a positive relationship between urinary arsenic species (inorganic arsenic (iAs), methylarsonic acid (MMAV), dimethylarsinic acid (DMAV) and serum 25(OH)D. Log-binomial regression analysis indicated a 0.4% increase in the risk of vitamin D excess for every 1-unit increment in the Box-Cox transformed urinary DMAV after adjustment for covariates. After stratifying populations by inorganic arsenic methylation metabolic capacity, serum 25(OH)D levels in the populations with iAs% above the median and primary methylation index (PMI) below the median increased by 0.064 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.032 to 0.096) for every one-unit increase in the Box-Cox transformed total arsenic (tAs) levels. Serum 25(OH)D levels increased by 0.592 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.041 to 1.143) for every one-unit rise in the Box-Cox transformed iAs levels in people with skin hyperkeratosis. Overall, our findings support a positive relationship between urinary arsenic species and serum 25(OH)D. It was recommended that those residing in regions with water-borne arsenicosis should take moderate vitamin D supplements to avoid vitamin D poisoning.

Abstract
Vitamin D hormone is an important regulator of various physiological functions, and its deficiency is characterized by an imbalance in parathyroid hormone and calcium homeostasis. The role of vitamin D in cardiovascular physiology is well demonstrated in animal and humanbased studies. In this context, hyperlipidemia, increased atherogenic plaques, cardiac inflammation, hypertension, myocarditis, myocardial infarction, and heart failure are some of the commonest known conditions connected with vitamin D deficiency. Supplementation of vitamin D is recommended to achieve normal serum vitamin D concentrations, nonetheless, in clinical trials often seen discrepancies concerning the supplementation effects and effectiveness. This review summarizes the data on the role of vitamin D in cardiovascular health along with some recent clinical findings regarding the effects of vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract
Supplementation of micronutrients is considered to be crucial in the reinforcement of the skin's barrier. In this paper, 14 nutritional compounds commonly used in food or pharmaceutic industries were analyzed in terms of influencing skin conditions. The major objective of this paper was to provide a narrative review of the available literature regarding several chosen compounds that are currently widely recommended as supplements that aim to maintain proper and healthy skin conditions. We conducted a review of the literature from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science until September 2023 without any other restrictions regarding the year of the publication. Ultimately, we reviewed 238 articles, including them in this review. Each of the reviewed compounds, including vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, curcumin, chlorella, Omega-3, biotin,Ppolypodium leucotomos, Simmondsia chinesis, gamma oryzanol, olive leaf extract, spirulina, and astaxanthin, was observed to present some possible effects with promising benefits for a skin condition, i.e., photoprotective radiation. Adding them to the diet or daily routine might have a positive influence on some skin inflammatory diseases such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Further, UV radiation protection facilitated by some supplements and their impact on human cells might be helpful during chemotherapy or in preventing melanoma development. Further research is needed because of the lack of clear consensus regarding the doses of the described compounds that could provide desirable effects on the skin.

Abstract
Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E, and K) assume a pivotal role in maintaining human homeostasis by virtue of their enzymatic functions. The daily inclusion of these vitamins is imperative to the upkeep of various physiological processes including vision, bone health, immunity, and protection against oxidative stress. Current research highlights fat-soluble vitamins as potential therapeutics for human diseases, especially cancer. Fat-soluble vitamins exert their therapeutic effects through multiple pathways, including regulation of matrix metalloproteinases' (MMPs) expression and enzymatic activity. As MMPs have been reported to be involved in the pathology of various diseases, such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurological disorders, regulating the expression and/or activity of MMPs could be considered as a potent therapeutic strategy. Here, we summarize the properties of fat-soluble vitamins and their potential as promising candidates capable of effectively modulating MMPs through multiple pathways to treat human diseases.

Abstract
Phase angle and vitamin D can reflect the state of the body cells, and the two may interact with each other. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the relationship between PA and vitamin D. Taking women in early pregnancy as our study subjects, we found that PA had a positive effect on vitamin D levels. Body composition phase angle, as a noninvasive, easy-to-operate, and easy-to-monitor indicator, can be used an early screening index for vitamin D nutrition levels in early pregnancy, and the cutoff value was 4.95°.

Abstract
Vitiligo is a common autoimmune skin disease caused by autoreactive CD8+ T cells. The diverse effects of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D₃ [1,25(OH)₂D₃] on immune cell metabolism and proliferation have made it an interesting candidate as a supporting therapeutic option in various autoimmune diseases. This study aimed to elucidate the immunomodulatory effects of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ in vitiligo. Cross-sectional relationships between serum 1,25(OH)₂D₃ levels and disease characteristics were investigated in 327 patients with vitiligo. The immunomodulatory and therapeutic effects of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ were then investigated in vivo and in vitro, respectively. We found that 1,25(OH)₂D₃ deficiency was associated with hyperactivity of CD8+ T cells in the vitiligo cohort. In addition, 1,25(OH)₂D₃ suppressed glycolysis by activating the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) signaling pathway, thereby inhibiting the proliferation, cytotoxicity and aberrant activation of CD8+ T cells. Finally, the in vivo administration of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ to melanocyte-associated vitiligo (MAV) mice reduced the infiltration and function of CD8+ T cells and promoted repigmentation. In conclusion, 1,25(OH)₂D₃ may serve as an essential biomarker of the progression and severity of vitiligo. The modulation of autoreactive CD8+ T cell function and glycolysis by 1,25(OH)₂D₃ may be a novel approach for treating vitiligo.

Abstract
Background The correlation between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and different sub-types of urinary incontinence in elderly men continues to be uncertain. Hence, we performed this research to evaluate whether serum 25(OH)D levels are correlated with urinary incontinence among elderly men. Methods The present study incorporated the male population aged 50 years and above from four cycles of the NHANES database spanning from 2007 to 2014, for the purpose of analysis. The assessment of urinary incontinence was carried out through a correlation questionnaire, while standardized liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was adopted to quantify serum 25(OH)D. A weighted multi-factorial logistic regression analysis was carried out to ascertain and investigate any potential correlation that may exist between serum 25(OH)D and urinary incontinence in senior males. Results Ultimately, a sum of 4663 elderly men were involved in our analysis. The outcomes of the univariable analysis illustrated that the group with vitamin D deficiency exhibited augmented odds of all three urinary incontinence types in comparison to the vitamin D-sufficient group. After accounting for age, race, and BMI, no appreciable variations in the outcomes were noticed. However, after accounting for all covariates, only SUI (OR = 1.677; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.074-2.618) and MUI (OR = 1.815; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.010-3.260) demonstrated statistical significance. Conclusion Decreased serum 25(OH)D levels were connected with stress urinary incontinence and mixed urinary incontinence in elderly men.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the content of mercury in impacted third molars from Legnica-Głogów Copper Area residents to emphasize the effects of environmental pollution on the human body. A group of 72 patients with an average age of 27.3 ± 6.9 years participated in the study. Within this study, the research group (Legnica-Głogów Copper Area residents) comprised 51 individuals, while the control group (residents of Wrocław) consisted of 21 participants. A higher number of female individuals participated in the research (55). The amount of mercury present in the samples was determined through atomic absorption spectrometry with the use of a SpectraAA atomic absorption spectrometer and a V2 AA240FS flame attachment that utilized an air-acetylene flame. The accumulation of Hg in the teeth of members of the control group residing in Wrocław was studied, with a focus on identifying the risk factors that contribute to this phenomenon. The final model analyzed the presence of various factors, including thyroid and parathyroid gland diseases, cardiac diseases, and interval-scale Vit. D3 concentration. Among these factors, the presence of cardiac diseases was deemed statistically significant in relation to an increase in Hg concentration in third molars (rate ratio = 2.27, p < 0.0001). The concentration of mercury increased with the age and time of residence in the L-G Copper District.

Abstract
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the most common eye disease complication of diabetes, and hypovitaminosis D is mentioned as one of the risk factors. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) are the best-known forms of vitamin D. Calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol) is the active form of vitamin D, with the sun being one of its main sources. Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin by exposure to sunlight without protective factors, but care must be taken to avoid the development of sunburn. It not only plays an important role in maintaining healthy bones and immune system but has also been highlighted in numerous studies to have an influence on various diseases, including diabetic retinopathy. A large number of people suffer from vitamin D hypovitaminosis worldwide, and diagnosis is made by measuring the concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in serum. Its deficiency can cause numerous diseases and, as such, supplementation is necessary. Clinical studies have proven the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, but with a doctor's recommendation and supervision due to possible negative side effects.

Abstract
Many consumers are incorporating more plant-based foods into their diets as a result of concerns about the environmental, ethical, and health impacts of animal sourced foods like meat, seafood, egg, and dairy products. Foods derived from animals negatively impact the environment by increasing greenhouse gas emissions, land use, water use, pollution, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. The livestock industry confines and slaughters billions of livestock animals each year. There are concerns about the negative impacts of some animal sourced foods, such as red meat and processed meat, on human health. The livestock industry is a major user of antibiotics, which is leading to a rise in the resistance of several pathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics. It is often assumed that a plant-based diet is healthier than one containing more animal sourced foods, but this is not necessarily the case. Eating more fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grain cereals has been linked to improved health outcomes but it is unclear whether next-generation plant-based foods, such as meat, seafood, egg, and dairy analogs are healthier than the products they are designed to replace. Many of these new products are highly processed foods that contain high levels of saturated fat, sugar, starch, and salt, and low levels of micronutrients, nutraceuticals, and dietary fibers. Moreover, they are often rapidly digested in the gastrointestinal tract because processing disrupts plant tissues and releases the macronutrients. Consequently, it is important to formulate plant-based foods to reduce the levels of nutrients linked to adverse health effects and increase the levels linked to beneficial health effects. Moreover, it is important to design the food matrix so that the macronutrients are not digested and absorbed too quickly, but the micronutrients are highly bioavailable. In this article, we discuss how next-generation plant-based foods can be made healthier by controlling their nutrient profile, digestibility, and bioavailability.

Abstract
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium and phosphate metabolism, relating to bone health and preventing metabolic bone disorders such as rickets and osteomalacia. Vitamin D deficiency (serum 25-OH-D values <20 ng/mL or 50 nmol/L) is common also in Italian people; it is recommended to maintain levels above 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L) in categories at risk. Supplementation and/or fortification with either ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) or cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) aimed to modify this condition have commonly been proposed. Studies about vitamin D intake are numerous in the literature but not adequately designed and are very often incomplete in Mediterranean Countries such as in the Italian population. On these bases, we performed a survey to validate a frequency food questionnaire (FFQ) specifically created to rapidly assess dietary vitamin D intake in Italian people. For this aim, the data of questionnaires were compared with results derived in the same population from a designed 14-day frequency food diary (FFD). Overall, a good correlation between FFQ and FFD was observed (r = 0.89, p < 0.001), both demonstrating a remarkably low vitamin D intake, irrespective of age and gender. Our data confirm that the vitamin D intake is very low in Italy, which likely contributes to hypovitaminosis D.

Abstract
Introduction Vitamin D insufficiency is a global health problem affecting healthy and diseased individuals, including patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Identifying dietary factors that may affect vitamin D levels and providing dietary guidelines accordingly can alleviate this problem. We therefore aimed to identify still unknown associations of dietary patterns, assessed through the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) with vitamin D blood levels. Materials and methods FFQ was collected from 459 patients from Croatian Biobank of Patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (CROHT), while total 25(OH)D was measured from their stored serum samples. We performed linear regression analysis between vitamin D levels and weekly intake of 24 food groups in 459 patients with HT (ALL), and in two disease-severity groups (MILD and OVERT). Results The main results of our study are observations of: (1) an inverse association between vitamin D levels and coffee consumption (ALL: β = -0.433, p = 0.005; OVERT: β = -0.62, p = 0.008); (2) an inverse association between vitamin D levels and sweets consumption (ALL: β = -0.195, p = 0.034; OVERT: β = -0.431, p = 0.006); (3) positive association between vitamin D levels and vegetable consumption (ALL: β = 0.182, p = 0.019; OVERT, β = 0.311, p = 0.009). Importantly, effect sizes of all three associations were more prominent in HT patients with prolonged and more severe disease (OVERT). Conclusion Further research into the functional and causal relationships of the observed associations is important to provide guidance regarding coffee/sugar intake on vitamin D status. A well-balanced diet can help prevent vitamin D deficiency and improve the quality of life of patients with HT, especially those in later stages of disease characterized by greater metabolic imbalance.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is prevalent worldwide and identification of alternative food-based strategies are urgently warranted. In two studies, 12-week old crossbred pigs (Duroc x (Large White x Landrace)) were exposed daily to narrowband UVB radiation for ∼10 weeks or control (no UVB exposure) until slaughter. In Study 1 (n = 48), pigs were exposed to UVB for 2 min and in Study 2 (n = 20), this duration was tripled to 6 min. All pigs were fed the maximum permitted 2000 IU vitamin D3/kg feed. Loin meat was cooked prior to vitamin D LC-MS/MS analysis. In Study 1, pork loin vitamin D3 did not differ between groups. Study 2 provided longer UVB exposure time and resulted in significantly higher loin vitamin D3 (11.97 vs. 6.03 μg/kg), 25(OH)D3 (2.09 vs. 1.65 μg/kg) and total vitamin D activity (22.88 vs. 14.50 μg/kg) concentrations, compared to control (P < 0.05). Pigs remained healthy during both studies and developed no signs of erythema. Biofortification by UVB radiation provides an effective strategy to further safely increase the naturally occurring vitamin D content of pork loin, alongside feed supplementation.

Abstract
The objective was to explore the patterns of contribution from vitamin D metabolites (D2 and D3) to total vitamin D concentrations in Indian families. This cross-sectional study was carried out in slum-dwelling families residing in Pune city. Data on demography, socio-economic status, sunlight exposure, anthropometry, and biochemical parameters (serum 25OHD2, 25OHD3) via the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method were collected. The results are presented for 437 participants (5 to 80 years). One-third were vitamin-D-deficient. Intake of foods containing vitamin D2 or D3 was rarely reported. Irrespective of gender, age, and vitamin D status, the contribution of D3 to total 25OHD concentrations far exceeded that of D2 (p < 0.05). The contribution of D2 ranged from 8% to 33% while that of D3 to 25OHD concentrations ranged from 67% to 92%. 25OHD3 is a major contributor to overall vitamin D concentrations, and the contribution of 25OHD2 was found to be negligible. This implies that sunlight and not diet is currently the major source of vitamin D. Considering that lifestyle and cultural practices may lead to insufficient sunlight exposure for large sections of the society, especially women, dietary contribution to vitamin D concentrations through fortification may play an important role in improving the vitamin D status of Indians.

Abstract
Epidemiological evidence suggests that diet and nutrition not only impact individuals' physical health but also shape their mental health (MH). The nutrition/diet-MH relationship may be critical among immigrants due to socioeconomic and sociocultural factors. Despite the complex nutrition/diet-MH relationship, most scholarship in this area employs a biomedical perspective. This scoping review of 63 studies deployed a holistic bio-psycho-socio-cultural framework to examine the relationship between diet/nutrition and immigrants' MH. Five automated databases (Embase, PubMed, Medline, PsycINFO and Anthropology Plus) were systematically searched for relevant articles from Western countries. A bio-psycho-socio-cultural conceptual model guided the analysis of the multi-faceted diet/nutrition-MH relationship. Consumption of fruit/vegetables, unsaturated fats, vitamin D-rich foods and whole grains was significantly positively related to MH. Reported pathways included enhanced self-esteem and ability to stay physically active. Energy-dense food consumption emanating from unhealthful dietary acculturation to the Western lifestyle was associated with poor MH through various mechanisms, including exhaustion and worry about developing non-communicable diseases. Food insecurity and related hunger were significantly positively associated with depression and anxiety among immigrants through different pathways, including family conflicts, homesickness, social exclusion, feelings of shame/stigma, and helplessness related to not affording nutritious foods that meet one's cultural dietary requirements. Ethnic food consumption appeared to mitigate MH issues and enhance immigrants' well-being. A bio-psycho-socio-cultural-informed model is needed to gain an in-depth and encompassing understanding of immigrant MH as it relates to diet/nutrition. The first iteration of such a model is presented in this review alongside an illustration of how it may be used to strengthen an analysis and understanding of the multi-faceted diet/nutrition-MH relationship amongst immigrants and inform public health professionals and dieticians/practitioners.

Abstract
Five-Factor Model (FFM) personality traits are consistently related to cognition in old age. However, little is known about the biological mediators of this association. The present study examined whether levels of Vitamin D mediated the association between personality and memory. Participants were adults aged 50-96 years from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS, N = 5229) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA, N = 4249). In HRS, personality and demographic factors were assessed in 2012/2014, Vitamin D was assessed in 2016, and memory was assessed in 2018. In ELSA, personality and demographic factors were obtained in 2010/2011, Vitamin D was measured in 2012/2013, and memory was assessed in 2014/2015. In both samples, higher extraversion and conscientiousness were related to higher levels of Vitamin D, whereas higher neuroticism was related to lower Vitamin D. In both samples, higher Vitamin D partly mediated the association between both higher extraversion and conscientiousness and better memory. The association between higher neuroticism and worse memory at follow-up was partially mediated by lower Vitamin D in the HRS and ELSA. Vitamin D did not mediate the association between higher openness and better memory. The present study extends the personality-cognition literature by providing new replicable evidence that Vitamin D is a biological mediator.

Abstract
The changing environment and modified lifestyles have meant that many vitamins and minerals are deficient in a significant portion of the human population. Therefore, supplementation is a viable nutritional approach, which helps to maintain health and well-being. The supplementation efficiency of a highly hydrophobic compound such as cholecalciferol (logP > 7) depends predominantly on the formulation. To overcome difficulties associated with the evaluation of pharmacokinetics of cholecalciferol, a method based on the short time absorption data in the clinical study and physiologically based mathematical modeling is proposed. The method was used to compare pharmacokinetics of liposomal and oily formulations of vitamin D3. The liposomal formulation was more effective in elevating calcidiol concentration in serum. The determined AUC value for liposomal vitamin D3 formulation was four times bigger than that for the oily formulation.

Abstract
Objective Vitamin D deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency. Numerous studies suggest that vitamin D is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The objective is to visualize the research hotspots and evolution trends of the correlation between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease by using multivariate statistics and social network analysis techniques and to compare adult research with that of children in this field. Methods (Vitamin D [MeSH Major Topic]) AND (cardiovascular disease [MeSH Major Topic]) were retrieved from the PubMed database by time period. The bibliographic items co-occurrence matrix builder (BICOMB) was adopted to extract high-frequency subject terms and establish the core subject term co-occurrence matrix. With the Netdraw function of Ucinet 6.0 software, the social network of core subject terms was completed. Results Before 2010, there was a slow increase in the number of research papers covering all age groups in this field (157, 54, 84, and 211 papers were published in stages 1-4, respectively). From 2010 to 2020, there were 1,423 papers retrieved, showing a significantly increased research heat. The overall development trend of the research on the association between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease in children is similar to that in all age groups. From 2010 to 2020, 122 related papers were published (while before 2009, there were only 43 papers in all), presenting a good overall development trend. The social network analysis of core subject terms showed gradually increased correlations between research hotspots, from the early studies limited on the physiological function of vitamin D in cardiovascular diseases, to the role of vitamin D in the comorbidities of various cardiovascular diseases and its value as an intervention measure. Researches on the association between vitamin D and cardiovascular disease has a good overall development trend. Study of the mechanisms and the role of vitamin D in the common co-morbidities of cardiovascular disease and its therapeutic value will be the focus of future research.

Abstract
Poor vitamin D status is a widespread problem regardless of age and sex, emphasizing the necessity of new food sources to improve vitamin D levels. Currently, approximately 60% of dietary vitamin D consumption occurs via fortified foods. Vitamin D insufficiency (50-90%) is widespread according to age and region, despite different levels of sunlight exposure. The food industry must identify more effective strategies to increase normal dietary vitamin D intake and improve overall health. Strategies for vitamin D fortification include bioaddition, wherein a vitamin D-rich food source is added to staple foods during processes. These bioadditive strategies expand the range of vitamin D-containing foods and appeal to different preferences, cultures, and economic statuses. In several countries, vitamin D deficiency places athletes at a high risk of disease susceptibility. Due to low sun exposure, athletes in countries with higher and lower levels of sunlight have similar risks of vitamin D deficiency. In this review, we summarize recent technical advances to promote vitamin D utilization by humans during sports activities and in relation to the normal practices of athletes.

Abstract
Vitamin D may have multiple effects on the nervous system and its deficiency can represent a possible risk factor for the development of many neurological diseases. Recent studies are also trying to clarify the different effects of vitamin D supplementation over the course of progressive neurological diseases. In this narrative review, we summarise vitamin D chemistry, metabolism, mechanisms of action, and the recommended daily intake. The role of vitamin D on gene transcription and the immune response is also reviewed. Finally, we discuss the scientific evidence that links low 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations to the onset and progression of severe neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, migraine, diabetic neuropathy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Completed and ongoing clinical trials on vitamin D supplementation in neurological diseases are listed.

Abstract
Nutrients perform their roles either directly or through interaction with other nutrients inside our body. The nature of interactions between nutrients can be synergistic, which brings about maximum benefit to the host, or antagonistic, i.e., one nutrient affects the uptake and availability of other nutrients in the body. These interactions need to be critically analysed and acknowledged to harness their positive health benefits. Combining nutrients having a synergistic effect may help in lowering the threat of cardiovascular ailment, osteoporosis, and other health issues. This study aims to qualitatively review the information that is currently available upon the synergistic effects of co-supplementing Vitamin D and K on bone and cardiovascular health among various age groups. The methodology followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines. A structured search of two databases-PubMed and Google Scholar—was carried out, and articles were identified that focused upon the dual supplementation of Vitamin D and K, which has been shown to improve bone and cardiovascular health among users. The search was restricted to the English language, conducted, and published between 2006 and 2021. Overall, 12 studies involving 8216 participants were included in the qualitative analysis. Among these, 5 were randomized controlled trials, 6 were observational studies, and 1 was interventional studies. The results were interpreted based on improved bone health by assessing the progress in Bone Mineral Content (BMC), lower extremity function, Bone Mineral Density (BMD), and bone turnover. In contrast, improvement in cardiovascular health was recorded based on the Carotid Intima-media Thickness (CIMT), arterial stiffness, high systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and the structure of the heart. Out of a total 12 studies, 11 studies showed that Vitamin D work in synergy with Vitamin K and also has a significant role in improving bone fractures, low BMD, and cardiovascular disorders. Further research and clinical trials on these Vitamins in different age groups and disease conditions are warranted.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a facile and novel lipid-based formulation of vitamin C and vitamin D3. Liposomes loaded with vitamin C and D3 were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and zeta potential measurements for evaluating morphology, particle size and physical stability. HPLC was employed to quantify the content of vitamin C and vitamin D3 in their liposomal forms. The UHPLC analysis of the lipid-based vitamin formulation is an easy and rapid method for the characterization as well as the quantification of all components. In addition, encapsulation efficiency, vitamin loading and stability analysis were performed by the UHPLC method, in order to evaluate the reliability of the optimized lipid-based formulation. The TEM results provided key support for the core type of liposome structure in the formulations, whereas the HPLC results indicated that the liposomal vitamin C and D3 systems were homogeneous, and did not undergo phase separation. Taken together, the results demonstrate that liposomal encapsulated vitamins (vitamin C and D3) possess a unilamellar vesicle morphology with uniform particle size, despite differences in the hydrophile-lipophile profiles of the vitamins. The highly efficient encapsulation properties of such liposomal constructs are proposed to contribute to enhanced vitamin bioavailability.

Abstract
AbstractVitamin D2 is produced from its precursor ergosterol under the impact of ultraviolet (UV) light which is also commercially carried out to increase vitamin D2 contents in mushrooms (‘Novel Food’). However, this process is accompanied by the formation of various isomers that partly co-elute with the target compound and are currently difficult to analyze. For this reason, vitamin D2 and ergosterol were irradiated with the goal to generate and characterize various isomeric photoproducts with three analytical methods. High-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection (HPLC–UV) was accompanied by using a chiral detector (CD) which was serially linked with the UV detector. Applied for the first time in this research area, HPLC-CD chromatograms provided complementary information which was crucial for the identification of several co-elutions that would have been overlooked without this approach. Additional information was derived from gas chromatography with mass spectrometry analysis. Diagnostic fragment ions in the GC/MS spectra allowed to distinguish four classes of tri- (n = 2), tetra-, and pentacyclic isomer groups. Despite several drawbacks of each of the applied methods, the shared evaluation allowed to characterize more than ten isomeric photoproducts of vitamin D2 including previtamin D2, lumisterol2, tachysterol2,trans-vitamin D2 isomers, and two pentacyclic isomers (suprasterols2 I and II), which were isolated and characterized by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR).

Abstract
Insulin resistance, a pathological response to insulin hormone in insulin-dependent cells, is characterized by the presence of high glucose and insulin concentrations. The homeostasis model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) is one of the most used indexes to estimate insulin resistance by assessing the fasting glucose and insulin levels. An association was observed between vitamin D levels and insulin resistance, which varied in different ethnic groups, and there is some evidence that vitamin D supplementation could contribute to the improvement of insulin resistance. This study assessed the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) concentration and HOMA-IR in American adults aged 20 years and older, without diabetes and other chronic diseases that can influence insulin resistance. The data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2014 were used by exploiting the free and publicly-accessible web datasets. Linear regression models were performed to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D concentration and HOMA-IR, and a negative association was observed, which remained significant following the adjustment for age, gender, race/ethnicity, education, body mass index (BMI), physical activity, the season of examination, current smoking, hypertension, the use of drugs which can influence insulin resistance, serum bicarbonates, triglycerides, and calcium and phosphorus levels. Only in non-Hispanic Blacks was this inverse association between vitamin D and HOMA-IR not observed in the fully adjusted model. Further studies are needed to explain the mechanisms of the observed ethnic/racial differences in the association of vitamin D levels with HOMA-IR.

Abstract
CONTEXT A plant-based lifestyle is a global trend; lower bone mineral density and increased fracture risk in vegan people are reported. OBJECTIVE The primary objective was to assess trabecular and cortical bone microarchitecture in vegans and omnivores. Secondary objectives were to evaluate relationships between bone microarchitecture, nutrition parameters, and physical activity. METHODS This was an observational study at the Medical Department II, St. Vincent Hospital (tertiary referral center for gastrointestinal, metabolic, and bone diseases, and teaching hospital of the Medical University of Vienna), including 43 healthy nonobese female and male subjects on a plant-based diet for at least 5 years, and 45 healthy nonobese female and male subjects on an omnivore diet for at least 5 years. The main outcome measures were the parameters of trabecular and cortical bone microarchitecture (high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography), serum markers of bone turnover, nutrient intake (nutrition protocol), and self-reported resistance training (physical activity questionnaires). RESULTS In the vegan group, trabecular and cortical structure were altered compared with omnivores. Vegans not reporting resistance training had diminished bone microarchitecture compared with omnivores not reporting resistance training. In vegans and omnivores reporting resistance training, bone structure was similar. In both vegan subgroups (resistance training and not resistance training), a small number of correlations between nutrient intake and bone microarchitecture were observed without a conclusive pattern. CONCLUSION Bone microarchitecture in vegans differed from matched omnivores but could not be explained solely by nutrient uptake. These differences were attenuated between the subgroups reporting resistance training. In addition to a well-planned diet, progressive resistance training on a regular basis should be part of the vegan lifestyle.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D plays an invaluable role in reproductive health, but vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency are generally common among couples of childbearing age and pregnant women. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution, development trend, and research hotspot of publications on vitamin D and reproductive health. Methods The literature on vitamin D and reproductive health between 2012 and 2021 was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We used VOSviewer and CiteSpace to analyze publication years, countries, institutions, journals, highly cited authors and publications, and co-occurrence and citation bursts of keywords. Results A total of 1,828 articles and reviews on vitamin D and reproductive health published between 2012 and 2021 were identified. The annual publication outputs showed steady growth, with the most publications (272) and citations (7,097) in 2021. The United States contributed the most publications (458) and had the highest h-index (58). In terms of the number of publications and h-index, the journal named Nutrients ranked first. Nutrition dietetics, obstetrics gynecology, and endocrinology metabolism were three well-represented disciplines in research on vitamin D and reproductive health. Hollis BW, Wagner CL, and Litonjua AA were the top three most productive authors in this field during the last decade. Apart from vitamin D, the five keywords with the most frequent occurrence were vitamin D deficiency, pregnancy, risk, vitamin D supplementation, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Keyword citation burst analysis revealed that low birth weight, adipose tissue, marker, and embryo had a citation burst lasting until 2021. Conclusion In conclusion, vitamin D has received continuous attention in the field of reproductive health, and there appears to have a higher level of research in North America. Multidisciplinary intersection contributed to the in-depth exploration in this field. And the effect of maternal vitamin D levels on fetal lipid metabolism and the prediction of fertility by vitamin D-related markers might be hotspots for the research.

Abstract
Since the beginning of the 21st century, interest in vegan diets has been rapidly increasing in most countries. Misconceptions about vegan diets are widespread among the general population and health professionals. Vegan diets can be health-promoting and may offer certain important advantages compared to typical Western (and other mainstream) eating patterns. However, adequate dietary sources/supplements of nutrients of focus specific to vegan diets should be identified and communicated. Without supplements/fortified foods, severe vitamin B12 deficiency may occur. Other potential nutrients of focus are calcium, vitamin D, iodine, omega-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, and protein. Ensuring adequate nutrient status is particularly important during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, and childhood. Health professionals are often expected to be able to provide advice on the topic of vegan nutrition, but a precise and practical vegan nutrition guide for health professionals is lacking. Consequently, it is important and urgent to provide such a set of dietary recommendations. It is the aim of this article to provide vegan nutrition guidelines, based on current evidence, which can easily be communicated to vegan patients/clients, with the goal of ensuring adequate nutrient status in vegans.

Abstract
The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to summarize and compare the available evidence on the level of vitamin D and antioxidant trace elements between the keratoconus (KC) patients and healthy controls. Seven case-control studies with 830 subjects were found eligible with a systematic search using PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and EMBASE till November 21, 2021. Data were synthesized with a DerSimonian and Laird random-effects method of meta-analysis. The mean serum vitamin D level was significantly lower in the patients with KC [standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.71; P < 0.001] as compared with the control group. The mean serum vitamin D level decreased more in the progressive patients (SMD: -0.80; P = 0.016) than in the stable patients (SMD: -0.66; P < 0.001) when compared with the control group. The mean serum zinc level was found significantly lower in the patients with KC compared with the control group (SMD: -1.98; P = 0.005). Pooled analysis based on the two studies showed significantly lower mean selenium levels in the KC patients (SMD: -0.34; P = 0.003). Regular evaluation of serum vitamin D, zinc, and selenium levels among the patients with KC at disease onset and future follow-ups could be promising in predicting the progressive disease and disease severity.

Vitamin D reportedly plays an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus; however, this role is unclear and debated. This study investigated the association between 25(OH) vitamin D, vitamin D-binding proteins, and vitamin D receptor (VDR) polymorphisms in healthy individuals and those with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) from South Africa. A cross-sectional study was conducted involving subjects of mixed ancestry aged ≥20 years. Males presented with higher mean 25(OH) vitamin D levels than females, while females exhibited significantly higher serum vitamin D-binding protein levels. Significant differences in mean 25(OH) vitamin D levels were observed in normo-glycaemic, prediabetes, screen-detected DM, and known DM individuals. Vitamin D receptor SNPs Fok1 and Taq1 were not associated with glycaemic status. Fok1 was not associated with 25(OH) vitamin D deficiency, while Taq1 was associated with vitamin D insufficiency. This study showed a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in this South African population, with decreased vitamin D levels observed in hyperglycaemic individuals, which was not linked to either vitamin D-binding protein or polymorphisms in Fok1 of the VDR gene. These results may be used as a platform for further research into diagnosis and treatment of hyperglycaemia.
