Abstract
OBJECTIVE Low childhood socio-economic status (SES) and adverse childhood experiences (ACE) are associated with poor health outcomes in adulthood. Determining how ACE may be linked to food insecurity among young people from socio-economically diverse households can inform health-protective strategies. This study examined if ACE are associated with food insecurity during the transition to adulthood and investigated prevalence differences across SES strata. SETTING Participants were recruited from twenty secondary schools in Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota. PARTICIPANTS The analytic sample (n 1518) completed classroom surveys in 2009-2010 (mean age = 14·5 years) and follow-up surveys in 2017-2018 (mean age = 22·0 years). DESIGN Past-year food insecurity was reported at both time points, and ACE were reported at follow-up. Logistic regression models were used to estimate emerging adult food insecurity prevalence by ACE exposure; models were stratified by childhood SES (low, middle and high). RESULTS The adjusted prevalence of food insecurity was 45·3 % among emerging adults who reported three or more ACE compared with 23·6 % among those with one or two ACE and 15·5 % among those with no ACE (P < 0·001). All forms of ACE were related to an elevated prevalence of food insecurity in emerging adulthood. ACE-food insecurity associations were strongest for emerging adults from lower and middle SES households. Among emerging adults from low SES households, childhood experiences of emotional abuse and substance use by a household member were associated with the largest prevalence differences in food insecurity. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest a need for trauma-informed services within food assistance programs to better serve individuals with a history of ACE.

Abstract
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the perceptions of nutrition assistance programmes among young adult students in the United States, and to identify how the current social and political climate, including the COVID-19 pandemic, has impacted these perceptions and the overall willingness of young adult students to participate in these programmes. Participants were recruited via email and social media to participate in 20-min virtual, semi-structured interviews. Twenty-three participants, between the ages of 18 and 25 years from three states in the United States were interviewed. Ten participants reported having experienced food insecurity (FI) in their lifetime, with 21 participants currently having enough food to eat, while two sometimes did not currently have enough to eat. Seven participants had utilised nutrition programmes in their lifetime. Interviews were video and audio recorded, transcribed, and coded using a six-step thematic analysis. Young adult students were largely unaware of nutrition assistance programmes and eligibility requirements but still perceived these programmes to be successful, with a higher proportion of the participants who had utilised a nutrition assistance programme in their lifetime expressing the view that they were generally successful compared to those who had never utilised one. Most were cognizant of the social stigma surrounding these programmes yet expressed a willingness to utilise them and reported an increased willingness to utilise nutrition assistance programmes as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 made young adult students aware of FI and the important role nutrition assistance programmes play in our society. Young adult students expressed the belief that the Biden administration will have a positive impact on nutrition assistance programmes but had a general hesitation to discuss politics. The COVID-19 pandemic has increased young adult students' willingness to utilise nutrition assistance programmes, although, access to these programmes remains low due to a lack of knowledge and general unawareness of programme availability and accessibility. Education is needed to improve overall knowledge of, and facilitate access to, nutrition assistance programmes while combating perceptions around stigma.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Food insecurity is a significant and growing concern undermining the wellbeing of 30% of the global population. Food in/security is a complex construct consisting of four dimensions: availability, access, utilization, and stability, making it challenging to measure. We provide a toolkit human biologists/ecologists can use to advance research on this topic. METHODS We review the strengths and limitations of common tools used to measure food access and utilization, the two dimensions most proximate to people's lived experience, and emphasize tools that provide data needed to best link food security with human biological outcomes. We also discuss methods that provide contextual data human biologists/ecologists will find useful for study design, ensuring instrument validity, and improving data quality. RESULTS Food access is principally measured using experience-based instruments that emphasize economic access. Social access, such as food sharing, is under-studied and we recommend using social network analysis to explore this dimension. In terms of utilization, emphasis has been on food choice measured as dietary diversity. Food preparation and intrahousehold distribution, also part of the utilization dimension, are less studied and standardized instruments for measuring both are lacking. The embodiment of food insecurity has focused on child growth, although a growing literature addresses adult mental wellbeing and chronic and infectious disease risk. CONCLUSIONS We see the potential to expand outcomes to include reproductive and immune function, physical activity, and the gut microbiome. Human biologists/ecologists are well-positioned to advance understanding of the human health impacts of food insecurity and provide data to support intervention efforts.

Abstract
Homelessness is a pervasive challenge caused by poverty which continues to grow in economically developed countries, posing significant health impacts (Fazel et al., Lancet, 384: 1529-1540, 2014). While food security related to poverty and low income has been investigated, this review specifically explores the experience of food security during and following homelessness. Given the fact that the health of individuals who experience homelessness is known to be poor and the importance of nutrition, this is a necessary contribution. Informed by a health equity lens, this review synthesises the findings and quality of the literature regarding experiences of food security during and following homelessness in high-income countries. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Qualitative studies published to date were obtained from six databases. We conducted a meta-aggregation of existing qualitative findings. Twenty-four studies on 462 participants were included in the review. Through meta-aggregation four themes were created: (1) imposed food options as a determinant of health out of my control; (2) obtaining food for survival despite stigma or other consequences; (3) situated within a system that maintains food insecurity; and (4) surviving hardships. Persons during and following homelessness in high-income countries face multiple challenges when securing food while situated in an oppressive system that lacks choice. Despite this, persons who have experienced homelessness demonstrate resilience by finding ways to meet their basic needs in the face of imposed barriers. Implications for research, policy and practice are offered.

Abstract
Background A steep rise in food insecurity is among the most pressing US public health problems that has resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Objective This study aimed to (1) describe how food-insecure emerging adults are adapting their eating and child-feeding behaviors during COVID-19 and (2) identify barriers and opportunities to improve local food access and access to food assistance. Design The COVID-19 Eating and Activity Over Time study collected survey data from emerging adults during April to October 2020 and completed interviews with a diverse subset of food-insecure respondents. Participants/setting A total of 720 emerging adults (mean age: 24.7 ± 2.0 years; 62% female; 90% living in Minnesota) completed an online survey, and a predominately female subsample (n = 33) completed an interview by telephone or videoconference. Main outcome measures Survey measures included the short-form of the US Household Food Security Survey Module and 2 items to assess food insufficiency. Interviews assessed eating and feeding behaviors along with barriers to healthy food access. Analyses performed Descriptive statistics and a hybrid deductive and inductive content analysis. Results Nearly one-third of survey respondents had experienced food insecurity in the past year. Interviews with food-insecure participants identified 6 themes with regard to changes in eating and feeding behavior (eg, more processed food, sporadic eating), 5 themes regarding local food access barriers (eg, limited enforcement of COVID-19 safety practices, experiencing discrimination), and 4 themes regarding barriers to accessing food assistance (eg, lack of eligibility, difficulty in locating pantries). Identified recommendations include (1) expanding the distribution of information about food pantries and meal distribution sites, and (2) increasing fresh fruit and vegetable offerings at these sites. Conclusions Interventions of specific relevance to COVID-19 (eg, stronger implementation of safety practices) and expanded food assistance services are needed to improve the accessibility of healthy food for emerging adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The estimated 3.5-million transition age youth (TAY) who experience homelessness in the United States annually are routinely exposed to inadequate sleep environments and other psychosocial risk factors for deficient sleep. Although staying in a shelter versus being unsheltered may facilitate sleep, research suggests that perceived safety wherever one sleeps may be just as important. In this study, which is the first known study to investigate sleep disturbances among TAY experiencing homelessness, we examine associations of sleep disturbances with sheltered status and perceived safety of usual sleep environment. METHODS We surveyed TAY (aged 18-25) experiencing homelessness in Los Angeles, CA about their sleep, psychosocial health, and living situations. Participants (n=103; 60% sheltered) self-reported sleep disturbances using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Sleep Disturbance short form, while individual items assessed sheltered status and perceived safety where they usually slept. Regression analyses examined associations of sheltered status and perceived sleep environment safety with sleep disturbance, adjusting for age, sex, race, self-rated health, depression symptoms, serious mental illness, high-risk drinking, and severe food insecurity. RESULTS Twenty-six percent of participants reported moderate-severe sleep disturbances. Sleep disturbance was not associated with sheltered status, but was positively associated with feeling unsafe in one's sleep environment, depression symptoms, severe food insecurity, and decreased age. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that sleep disturbances among TAY experiencing homelessness are associated more closely with how safe one feels rather than one's sheltered status. This highlights the importance of providing safe places to live for sheltered and unsheltered TAY.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aims of this study were to describe how homeless youths access food in the Seattle area, and to describe the nutritional adequacy and quality of food obtained. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted between February 2018 and May 2019. Data collection took place at seven organizations in the greater Seattle area at which homeless youths typically access food. Trained research assistants verbally administered an ∼50-item survey to homeless youths aged 14 to 24 years on their general demographic characteristics, current housing situation, ability to access food, and quantity and quality of foods acquired. Each participant was given $10 at the completion of the survey. RESULTS Participants were 122 homeless youths with an average age of 21.6±1.94 years. During the previous week, 79.3% obtained meals from drop-in centers and 69.8% from a shelter. Most (75.2%) had not utilized a food bank during the previous month. The majority (73.6%) reported having enough food to eat, but not always the kind they wanted, and 75.4% rated the overall nutritional quality of their diet as average or below. Not having enough food or money for food contributed to skipping meals (50.4%), eating less than desired (47.1%), being hungry (45.5%), and losing weight (20.5%). CONCLUSIONS Information from this study can be used to identify barriers that homeless youths experience in acquiring adequate nutrition; to make suggestions for future research and program development; and to help social service organizations improve the network of nutrition services and the quality of food available to this vulnerable population through policy, community partnership, and public health action.
