Abstract
BACKGROUND Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) have been associated with health-risk behaviors and several chronic diseases in adulthood. However, the relationship between exposure to ACEs and dietary patterns at school age is unknown. OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between ACEs and dietary patterns of 10-year-olds. METHODS The study included 5034 children from the Generation XXI cohort, recruited in 2005/2006 in Porto, Portugal. ACEs were assessed through a self-administered questionnaire covering the first 10 years (y) of life, quantified and grouped into 5 dimensions: "abuse," "school problems," "death/severe disease," "life changes," and "household dysfunction." Dietary patterns were identified by latent class analysis using data collected with a validated food frequency questionnaire. Five dietary patterns were studied: "low consumption," "energy-dense foods," "snacking," "intermediate consumption," and "healthier" (used as reference). Multinomial regression analyses were conducted, adjusted for the child's sex, household income, family structure, and mother's age [odds ratio (OR) and 99% confidence intervals (CIs)]. RESULTS Most children were exposed to ≥1 ACE (96%), and ∼27% had reported 6 or more ACEs throughout life. Those reporting 4-5 and ≥6 ACEs were more likely to follow the "Energy-dense foods" dietary pattern compared with those with no ACEs (OR: 2.41; 99% CI: 1.00, 5.77 and OR: 2.65; 99% CI: 1.10, 6.39, respectively). Children exposed to "abuse" in the first 10 y showed 28% higher odds of following the "low consumption" dietary pattern when compared to children with no reported ACEs and using the "healthier" dietary pattern as a reference (OR: 1.28; 99% CI: 1.00, 1.63). CONCLUSIONS Exposure to ACEs was associated with less healthy dietary patterns in school-aged children. Results suggest a cumulative effect of the adverse experiences resulting in a dietary pattern higher in energy-dense foods. Children with ACEs reported under the dimension of "abuse" seemed to have reduced food consumption.

Abstract
Child maltreatment (CM) and intimate partner violence (IPV) are prevalent in the United States and associated with negative mental and physical health outcomes. Thus far, research and clinical care have focused on reducing symptoms of illness, but little is known about whether or how CM and IPV exposure can lead to flourishing in adolescence. To examine the impact of CM and IPV exposure on adolescent mental and physical flourishing as well as moderators and mediators affecting this pathway. A secondary data analysis of 2,232 children in the Future of Families Child Wellbeing Study (FFCWS) was conducted to examine waves 1-6 including variables on CM/IPV, general flourishing, mental flourishing, BMI, and healthy eating. Race, socioeconomic status (SES), and gender were included as moderators; depression and anxiety were included as mediating variables. Adolescent boys experienced significantly more general flourishing (β = 4.00, p < .001). There were significant direct effects of CM (p = .025) and anxiety (p = .019) on well-being, and anxiety mediated the pathway from CM to mental flourishing (CI [0.001, 0.017]). Depression (CI [0.001, 0.026]) and anxiety (CI [-0.023, - 0.005]) mediated the pathway from CM to BMI. Our findings indicated that exposure to CM and IPV impacted the likelihood of adolescent flourishing. Future research should evaluate whether and how these flourishing outcomes could be modified.

Abstract
Few studies have examined the role adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have on specific diet patterns. This study assessed the association between ACEs and daily fruit and vegetable intake (FVI). Data were derived from the 2019 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) which surveys 50 states and three U.S. territories. Participants who completed the ACEs module were included in the analyses (N = 106,967). Total ACEs included the summed responses from the domains of abuse, household challenges, and neglect. FVI was reported by number of times consumed per day. The two fruit items included fruit (fresh, frozen, and canned) and fruit juice. The four vegetable items included leafy greens, fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and other vegetables. All fruit and vegetable items were analyzed separately to see which specific items drove the relationship between total ACEs and total FVI, equaling a total of 8 regression models. Every model controlled for poor mental health days, sex, age, ethnicity, income, body mass index, and physical activity. Total ACEs were positively associated with daily intake of fried potatoes (β = 0.008, p =.025), other potatoes (β = 0.008, p =.049), and other vegetables (β = 0.024, p <.001). Total ACEs were negatively associated with daily intake of fruit (β = -0.016, p <.001). ACEs had non-significant relationships with leafy greens and fruit juice. Findings suggests that those with increased ACEs scores report increased consumption of fried potatoes, non-fried potatoes, and other vegetables, and less of fruit. Findings highlight the need for understanding food context and preparation when analyzing the relationship between ACEs and diet intake.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and diet, sleep, and exercise in pre-adolescents. METHODS Baseline and 1-year follow-up data from the adolescent brain and cognitive development (ABCD) study were analyzed (age 10-11, n = 11,875). ACEs were measured by parent report at baseline. Three levels of ACEs were created: none, exposure to one ACE, and exposure to two or more ACEs. Health-promoting behaviors were assessed at 1 year. Diet quality was measured from parent report; sleep problems were measured by parent report, with higher scores indicating worse sleep; and amount of exercise was measured by youth report. Linear regression analyses were used to assess the relationship between ACEs and each health-promoting behavior, adjusting for family income and sex. RESULTS Compared to children with no adversity, ACEs were associated with worse diet - one ACE (β = -0.30 [95% CI, -0.49 to -0.12], P = .002) and 2 or more ACEs (β = -0.56 [-0.78 to -0.34, P < .001). Similarly, ACEs were associated with poor sleep - one ACE (β = 1.51 [1.00-2.03], P < .001) and 2 or more ACEs (β = 2.96 [2.38-3.53], P < .001). Finally, amount of exercise was not different in children with ACEs - 2 or more ACEs (β = -0.24, 95% CI, -0.51 to 0.04, P = .08). CONCLUSIONS ACEs in pre-adolescents show a dose-response relationship with unhealthy diet and sleep disruption. These findings suggest potential behaviors to target to mitigate the negative impact of childhood adversity on adult health.

Abstract
Early-life adversity (ELA) is a major risk factor for developing later-life mental and metabolic disorders. However, if and to what extent ELA contributes to the comorbidity and sex-dependent prevalence/presentation of these disorders remains unclear. We here comprehensively review and integrate human and rodent ELA (pre- and postnatal) studies examining mental or metabolic health in both sexes and discuss the role of the placenta and maternal milk, key in transferring maternal effects to the offspring. We conclude that ELA impacts mental and metabolic health with sex-specific presentations that depend on timing of exposure, and that human and rodent studies largely converge in their findings. ELA is more often reported to impact cognitive and externalizing domains in males, internalizing behaviors in both sexes and concerning the metabolic dimension, adiposity in females and insulin sensitivity in males. Thus, ELA seems to be involved in the origin of the comorbidity and sex-specific prevalence/presentation of some of the most common disorders in our society. Therefore, ELA-induced disease states deserve specific preventive and intervention strategies.

Association between Self-Reported Childhood Difficulties and Obesity and Health-Related Behaviors in Adulthood-A Cross-Sectional Study among 28,047 Adults from the General Population. Abstract
The aim of the present study was to examine the associations between self-reported childhood difficulties, weight status, and lifestyle behaviors among a representative sample of Norwegian adults. This cross-sectional study included 28,047 adults (>18 years old) living in southern Norway. A self-report questionnaire was used to assess information about the overall quality of the respondents’ childhood retrospectively in addition to current weight status and current lifestyle behaviors. Multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for gender, age, and educational level showed that evaluating childhood as difficult was associated with increased odds of obesity (OR: 1.29; 95% CI; 1.16–1.44) in adulthood. Moreover, a difficult childhood was associated with increased odds of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in adulthood, including low consumption of fruit and berries (1.21; 1.09–1.34) and fish (1.43; 1.30–1.57), high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (1.30; 1.14–1.48), low level of physical activity (1.10; 1.01–1.21), smoking cigarettes (1.78; 1.61–1.97), and using smokeless tobacco (1.20; 1.07–1.36). Overall, results from the present study suggest that experiencing childhood as difficult is associated with an increased risk of obesity and a range of unhealthy lifestyle behaviors in adulthood. Thus, our findings highlight the importance of identifying and providing support to children in difficult life circumstances in addition to customized and targeted public health efforts in adulthood.

Abstract
Few studies have evaluated the relationship between stressful events, such as child abuse and food consumption. Thus, the objective of this study is to assess whether family physical violence victimization is associated with food consumption in adolescents. We used data from the Brazilian National Adolescent School-based Health Survey, carried out in 2015, in a representative sample of 102,072 students attending ninth grade from public and private schools. We used Venn diagrams and logistic regression analysis to, respectively, graphically represent and evaluate the association between the consumption of ultra-processed food (soft drinks, sweets/candies, and salty biscuits, packaged snacks, or processed meat) and in natura food (beans, fruits and vegetables) with victimization from family physical violence. We found a lower consumption of in natura and higher consumption of ultra-processed foods among adolescent victims when compared with nonvictims of family physical violence. The probability of consuming 4 or more times a week increased by 44% for salty biscuits, packaged snacks, or processed meats; 38% for soft drinks; and 22% for sweets among adolescents who reported violence. On the contrary, the probability of consuming 4 or more times a week decreased by 25% for beans, 19% for vegetables, and 13% for fruits among adolescent victims of family physical violence. We conclude that family physical violence victimization is associated with high consumption of ultra-processed food and low consumption of in natura food among Brazilian adolescents. Therefore, issues related to violence in childhood and adolescence should be addressed in interventions aimed at altering food consumption and consequent prevention, control, and treatment of nutrition-related outcomes to increase their effectiveness.

Abstract
Child neglect (CN) has been associated with eating disorders, but little is known about its prospective association with the eating habits (EHs) of children. This study aimed to assess the cross-sectional and prospective associations of baseline CN with six common EHs in Chinese primary schoolchildren. We analyzed two-wave data of 1102 children (aged 9.1 ± 0.5 years) in Wuhan, China. Baseline CN was investigated by the Child Neglect Scale. Baseline and follow-up EHs, including fruit, vegetables, milk, sugar-sweetened beverages, and high-calorie snack and breakfast consumption frequency, were assessed by the Food Frequency Questionnaires. The association of baseline CN with baseline/follow-up EHs was analyzed by the generalized linear model (GLM). The association of baseline CN with the change of EHs from baseline to follow-up was examined by the Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model. After adjusting for demographic characteristics, pubertal stage, and body mass index, GLM indicated that higher baseline CN was associated with lower frequency of consuming fruit/vegetables/milk/breakfast and higher frequency of consuming sugar-sweetened beverages and high-calorie snacks at baseline, while it was only associated with lower frequency of vegetables/breakfast consumption and higher frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages consumption at follow-up. GEE results indicated that children with higher CN had a more rapid increase for the frequency of fruit/milk/breakfast consumption and a steeper decrease for the frequency of sugar-sweetened beverages consumption. In conclusion, higher CN was associated with unhealthy EHs. Yet simultaneously, children with higher CN have more scope to promote the health of their EHs. Targeting and reducing CN may be a promising approach for future interventions to improve subsequent EHs.

Abstract
Child neglect robustly predicts many behavioral problems and adulthood mental disorders, but little is known about its association with daily lifestyles and psychological development during childhood, particularly in the longitudinal study. We aimed to examine the association of child neglect with physical activity (PA), screen time (ST), eating habits (EHs), and depression/self-esteem using a two-wave follow-up study of primary schoolchildren in Wuhan, China. Data of 1085 schoolchildren aged 8-10 years (boys: 53.5%) were analyzed. Child neglect, lifestyles, and depression/self-esteem were collected in 2018 (T1) and 2019 (T2). Autoregressive cross-lagged models (ARCLMs) were fitted to explore the interrelationships among these variables. In ARCLM including child neglect and lifestyles, higher child neglect at T1 was significantly associated with higher ST and more risky EHs at T2, while insignificantly associated with PA. In ARCLM including child neglect and depression/self-esteem, lower T1 child neglect significantly predicted a higher T2 depression, but insignificantly for T2 self-esteem. In ARCLM including all variables, child neglect still significantly predicted later ST and depression, but insignificantly predicted EHs. Our study underscores that child neglect is strongly intertwined with ST, EHs, and depression during childhood. The prevention of child neglect may promote some healthy lifestyles and depression in children.

Abstract
There are sex differences in metabolic disease risk, and early-life stress (ES) increases the risk to develop such diseases, potentially in a sex-specific manner. It remains to be understood, however, how sex and ES affect such metabolic vulnerability. The hypothalamus regulates food intake and energy expenditure by sensing the organism's energy state via metabolic hormones (leptin, insulin, ghrelin) and nutrients (glucose, fatty acids). Here, we investigated if and how sex and ES alter hypothalamic nutrient sensing short and long-term. ES was induced in mice by limiting the bedding and nesting material from postnatal day (P)2-P9, and the expression of genes critical for hypothalamic nutrient sensing were studied in male and female offspring, both at P9 and in adulthood (P180). At P9, we observed a sex difference in both Ppargc1a and Lepr expression, while the latter was also increased in ES-exposed animals relative to controls. In adulthood, we found sex differences in Acacb, Agrp, and Npy expression, whereas ES did not affect the expression of genes involved in hypothalamic nutrient sensing. Thus, we observe a pervasive sex difference in nutrient sensing pathways and a targeted modulation of this pathway by ES early in life. Future research is needed to address if the modulation of these pathways by sex and ES is involved in the differential vulnerability to metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Early life adversity has been linked to poor health, including obesity. Understanding the role of unhealthy food intake, may elucidate the importance of self-soothing behaviors in explaining the association between early life adversity and poor health in adulthood. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between early life adversity and dietary quality in a sample of adults from the Lifestyle Influences of Family Environment study. Early life adversity, demographic, and dietary data were obtained for 145 participants using formal interviews and two days of interviewer-administered 24-h recalls. Dietary quality was measured using the 2015 Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scoring algorithm to compute total and component scores. The association between early life adversity and dietary quality was assessed through linear regression and in models adjusted for age and sex. The mean ± SD HEI score for all participants was 54.6 ± 12.8. Individuals with early life adversity had a 4.51 lower overall HEI score when compared to those without early life adversity, 95% CI (0.35, 8.68). After adjusting for age and sex, early life adversity was associated with a 4.6 lower HEI score, 95% CI (0.45, 8.73). HEI component scores indicated that individuals with early life adversity were significantly more likely to have lower whole grain (0.7 versus 2.4) and total dairy (4.3 versus 6.1) scores compared to those without early life adversity. ELA was associated with lower measures of dietary quality. Results warrant future research on dietary and behavioral factors that underly the association between early life adversity and poor health outcomes.

Abstract
Exposure to early-life stress (ES) increases the risk to develop obesity later in life, and these effects may be sex-specific, but it is currently unknown what underlies the ES-induced metabolic vulnerability. We have previously shown that ES leads to a leaner phenotype under standard chow diet conditions, but to increased fat accumulation when exposed to an unhealthy obesogenic diet. However these diets were fed without a choice. An important, yet under investigated, element contributing to the development of obesity in humans is the choice of the food. There is initial evidence that ES leads to altered food choices but a thorough testing on how ES affects the choice of both the fat and sugar component, and if this is similar in males and females, is currently missing. We hypothesized that ES increases the choice for unhealthy foods, while it at the same time also affects the response to such a diet. In a mouse model for ES, in which mice are exposed to limited nesting and bedding material from postnatal day (P)2–P9, we investigated if ES exposure affected i) food choice with a free choice high-fat high-sugar diet (fcHFHS), ii) the response to such a diet, iii) the brain circuits that regulate food intake and food reward and iv) if such ES effects are sex-specific. We show that there are sex differences in food choice under basal circumstances, and that ES increases fat intake in females when exposed to a mild acute stressor. Moreover, ES impacts the physiologic response to the fcHFHS and the brain circuits regulating food intake in sex-specific manner. Our data highlight sex-specific effects of ES on metabolic functioning and food choice. Strong sex differences exist in food choice and metabolism in mice. Early-life stress (ES) increases fat intake in females after mild acute stress exposure. The physiological response to the diet is affected by ES in a sex-dependent manner. ES modulates the hedonic feeding circuitry.

Abstract
Children of immigrants are often considered to be at increased risk of mental health problems due to families' immigration-related stress and perceived discrimination and prejudice from the host country. However, many studies found them to have better developmental outcomes than children with native-born parents in the U.S. This study aims to unfold this paradoxical phenomenon using data from a population-based cohort of children born in large U.S. cities. Specifically, we investigated differences in mental health outcomes between children of immigrants and those with native-born parents, stratified by children's race-ethnicity. We also explored the mediating role of child maltreatment risk in the association of parental nativity status and race-ethnicity with children's mental health. Our findings supported the immigrant paradox, with better self-reported and parent-reported internalizing and externalizing outcomes in Hispanic and Black children of immigrants than their same race-ethnicity peers and White children of native-born. Such immigrant-native variations were partially explained by parents' physically and psychologically abusive behaviors. Hispanic and Black children with immigrant parents were less likely to be physically or psychologically abused than their peers of native-born at ages 4-5, which translated into mental health advantages of children of immigrants at age 9. Our findings shed light on future research to further clarify the mechanism underlying different parenting practices between same race-ethnicity immigrants and native-born families so that culturally responsive interventions can be developed to safeguard racial-ethnic minority children's mental health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood adversity is linked with unhealthy eating behaviours and obesity, but the mechanisms underlying this association are unclear, specifically the transgenerational behavioural precursors that develop in early childhood. OBJECTIVE To determine whether adversity predicts change in obesogenic food consumption through child emotion dysregulation, and whether caregiver emotion dysregulation modifies this association. METHODS Participants included 190 low-income caregiver-child dyads (mean child age = 4.31 years [SD = 0.85]). Cumulative lifetime adversity exposure was assessed via study-created measure. The Difficulties with Emotion Regulation Scale and Emotion Regulation Checklist assessed caregiver and child emotion dysregulation, respectively. Children's obesogenic food consumption was assessed at two time points 6 months apart using a caregiver-report measure: the Children's Eating Habits Questionnaire. Moderated mediation models were tested using autoregressive structural equation modelling. RESULTS Cumulative lifetime adversity was associated with child emotion dysregulation only when caregiver emotion dysregulation was high. Child emotion dysregulation in turn was associated with greater obesogenic food consumption 6 months later. CONCLUSIONS Among young children with caregivers high in emotion dysregulation, cumulative lifetime adversity was linked to an increase in obesogenic food consumption through child emotion dysregulation.

Abstract
Child maltreatment is common and has been associated with substance use addictions, yet few studies have examined associations with potentially addictive dietary and screen time behaviors. The goal of this study was to assess associations between retrospectively self-reported child maltreatment (sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect) and excessive self-reported dietary (sugar sweetened beverage and fast food consumption) and screen time behaviors (television/video watching and leisure time computer use) in early adulthood, overall and by sex and race/ethnicity. Associations were examined using data from 10,813 participants 24-32 years old from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health. We used predicted marginal proportions accounting for the complex sample design to obtain prevalence ratios (PRs) and adjusted for demographic characteristics and physical activity. In females, exposure to poly-maltreatment (2+ types of child maltreatment) was associated with excessive sugar sweetened beverage consumption, television/video watching, and leisure time computer use; in males, exposure to poly-maltreatment was associated with excessive sugar sweetened beverage consumption, television/video watching, and fast food consumption. Some associations were particularly strong in racial/ethnic minorities, especially Latina females (poly-maltreatment-sugar sweetened beverage association: aPR = 6.14, 95% CI:2.12, 17.75; poly-maltreatment-computer use association: aPR = 3.08, 95% CI:1.44, 6.58). These findings show that child maltreatment is associated with excessive dietary and screen time behaviors into adulthood, and these associations are present in racial/ethnic groups at high risk of cardiometabolic disease. Extension of an addiction paradigm to include dietary and screen time behaviors may inform health risks and disease prevention efforts in child maltreatment survivors.

Abstract
Background Exposure to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) is associated with many childhood diseases and poor health outcomes in adulthood. However, the association with childhood obesity is inconsistent. We investigated the association between reported cumulative ACE score and body mass index (BMI) in a large sample of patients at a single institution. Methods This cross-sectional study included children aged 2–20 years that were screened in a general pediatrics clinic for ACEs utilizing the Center for Youth Wellness ACEs questionnaire between July 2017 and July 2018. Overall ACE score was categorized as ‘no exposure’ (score = 0), ‘low exposure’ (score = 1), and ‘high exposure’ (score≥ 2). BMI was categorized as overweight/obese (BMI percentile ≥ 85) or non-obese (BMI percentile < 85). The association between ACEs score and obesity was determined using univariate and multivariable logistic regression. Results Of the 948 patients included in the study, 30% (n = 314) were overweight/obese and 53% (n = 504) had no ACE exposure, 19% (n = 179) had low ACE exposure, and 28% (n = 265) had high ACE exposure. High ACE exposure was associated with increased odds of obesity (OR = 1.47, 95%CI = 1.07–2.03, p = 0.026). However, after adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, insurance type, and birth weight, the association attenuated and was null (OR = 1.01, 95%CI = 0.70–1.46, p = 0.97). Conclusion The study findings may suggest an association between ACE and childhood obesity. However, the association attenuated after adjusting for age, race/ethnicity, insurance type, and birth weight. Larger prospective studies are warranted to better understand the association.

Abstract
To improve urban adolescents' dietary behaviors and health, factors that influence them to buy meals in convenience stores with regard to urban food environments must be determined. This study investigated the factors which influence adolescents' substitution of meals with convenience store meals and its impact on their health in Seoul (South Korea). Multilevel analysis and logistic regression analysis were conducted using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a national health survey with a representative sample of Korean adolescents. Among 17,624 teenagers who responded to surveys in 2017 and 2019, 30.5% of them substituted meals with convenience store meals more than three times a week. Girls and students with a lower family economic level were more likely to frequently consume food from convenience stores. Unhealthy lifestyles and poor mental health status also influenced their decisions to substitute meals with convenience store food. Those who frequently consumed meals from convenience stores were more likely to have unhealthy lifestyles, featuring bad diets, smoking, drinking, and sedentary behaviors. They also reported significantly poorer self-rated health and mental health. To promote healthy lifestyles among adolescents, efforts to raise awareness and develop supportive environments for healthy diets are strongly recommended.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Economic hardship (EH) may link to poorer child diet, however whether this association is due to resource limitations or effects on family functioning is unknown. This study examines whether parenting stress mediates the association between EH and child consumption of foods high in saturated fats and added sugars (SFAS). DESIGN Data were collected from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing study. EH was assessed using eight items collected when children were between 1-9 years old. Mothers reported parenting stress and frequency of child consumption of high SFAS foods when children were 9 years old. Latent growth curve modelling (LGCM) and structural equation modelling tested direct associations between the starting level/rate of change in EH and high SFAS food consumption, and parenting stress as a mediator of the association. SETTING Twenty US cities. PARTICIPANTS Mothers/children (n 3846) followed birth through age 9 years, oversampled 'high-risk', unmarried mothers. RESULTS LGCM indicated a curvilinear trend in EH from ages 1-9, with steeper increases from ages 3-9 years. EH did not directly predict the frequency of high SFAS foods. Average EH at 3 and 5 years and change in EH from ages 1-9 predicted higher parenting stress, which in turn predicted more frequent consumption of high SFAS foods. CONCLUSIONS Findings suggest it may be important to consider parenting stress in early prevention efforts given potential lasting effects of early life EH on child consumption of high SFAS foods. Future research should explore how supports and resources may buffer effects of EH-related stress on parents and children.
