Development of an Abbreviated Adult Reading History Questionnaire (ARHQ-Brief) Using a Machine Learning Approach

Several crucial reasons exist to determine whether an adult has had a reading disorder (RD) and to predict a child's likelihood of developing RD. The Adult Reading History Questionnaire (ARHQ) is among the most commonly used self-reported questionnaires. High ARHQ scores indicate an increased likelihood that an adult had RD as a child and that their children may develop RD. This study focused on whether a subset of ARHQ items (ARHQ-Brief) could be equally effective in assessing adults' reading history as the full ARHQ. We used a machine learning approach, lasso (known as L1 regularization), and identified 6 of 23 items that resulted in the ARHQ-Brief. Data from 97 adults and 47 children were included. With the ARHQ-Brief, we report a threshold of 0.323 as suitable to identify past likelihood of RD in adults with a sensitivity of 72.4% and a specificity of 81.5%. Comparison of predictive performances between ARHQ-Brief and the full ARHQ showed that ARHQ-Brief explained an additional 10%-35.2% of the variance in adult and child reading. Furthermore, we validated ARHQ-Brief's superior ability to predict reading ability using an independent sample of 28 children. We close by discussing limitations and future directions.

Self-concept, creativity and developmental dyslexia in university students: Effects of age of assessment

Educational experiences often influence self-concept. Thus, readers with dyslexia can have low self-esteem and self-efficacy, and perceive themselves as less intelligent than their peers. They may develop creativity to succeed despite their difficulties but findings are inconsistent and rarely consider the effect of age of assessment on self-perception. This study included 145 university students (Mage = 24.43 years), 72 with dyslexia; of these, 53% had been assessed in childhood (Mage = 11.89 years), 47% in adulthood (Mage = 27.38 years). A survey assessed self-esteem, self-efficacy, creativity and estimated intelligence. Students with dyslexia reported lower levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy and estimated intelligence. When assessment age was considered, those assessed early displayed lower self-esteem and self-efficacy but no difference in estimated intelligence. Those assessed late displayed lower estimated intelligence and self-esteem but no difference in self-efficacy. Findings highlight the importance of providing psychological support to students with dyslexia to enhance their self-perceptions.

No Evidence of Creative Benefit Accompanying Dyslexia: A Meta-Analysis

Research on the question of creative benefit accompanying dyslexia has produced conflicting findings. In this meta-analysis, we determined summary effects of mean and variance differences in creativity between groups with and without dyslexia. Twenty studies were included (n = 770 individuals with dyslexia, n = 1,671 controls). A random-effects robust variance estimation (RVE) analysis indicated no mean (g = -0.02, p = .84) or variance (g = -0.0004, p = .99) differences in creativity between groups. The mean summary effect was moderated by age, gender, and creativity domain. Compared with adolescents, adults with dyslexia showed an advantage over nondyslexic adults in creativity. In addition, a higher proportion of males in the dyslexia group was associated with poorer performance compared with the controls. Finally, the dyslexia group showed a significant performance disadvantage in verbal versus figural creativity. Regarding variance differences, they varied across age and creativity domains. Compared with adults, adolescents showed smaller variability in the dyslexia group. If the creativity task measured verbal versus figural or combined creativity, the dyslexia group exhibited smaller variability. Altogether, our results suggest that individuals with dyslexia as a group are no more creative or show greater variability in creativity than peers without dyslexia.

Drawing a New Picture: Children with Developmental Dyslexia Exhibit Superior Nonverbal Creativity

BACKGROUND

Creativity and literacy are essential skills that today's children are expected to develop. However, the question of whether children with developmental dyslexia, a severe difficulty in reading and writing, exhibit any intact creativity strengths remains controversial. This study examined creativity strengths across verbal, figural, and nonverbal modalities, and the relations among creativity, nonverbal intelligence, and literacy skills, in younger and older Chinese children with and without developmental dyslexia.

METHODS

Two age groups of Chinese children with developmental dyslexia (Grade 2: N = 62; Grades 4-5: N = 62) and their age matched controls (Grade 2: N = 61; Grades 4-5: N = 61) were assessed on fluency and originality of verbal, figural, and nonverbal creativity, as well as on nonverbal intelligence, vocabulary, working memory, Chinese word reading accuracy and fluency, and word dictation.

RESULTS

Multifactorial analysis of variance demonstrated that regardless of grade level, children with developmental dyslexia exhibited higher nonverbal creativity than, and comparable figural creativity to, their typically developing peers. Moreover, the partial correlation analysis revealed creativity was not significantly correlated with nonverbal intelligence and literacy skills.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that children with dyslexia possess strengths and even advantages in nonverbal creativity and that the relationship between intelligence and/or literacy and creativity is negligible.

An Exploratory Study on Mind Wandering, Metacognition, and Verbal Creativity in Chilean High School Students

The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between mind wandering, metacognition, and creativity in a sample of Chilean high school students. Two hundred and twenty-eight secondary students took three self-report scales on mind wandering, metacognitive strategies and reading difficulties, two verbal creativity assessments, a test of fluid intelligence and a measure of attentional capacity. Correlational analysis, a single multiple hierarchical regression, and a three-way moderation model were performed on data. Controlling for fluid intelligence and reading difficulties, metacognition and attention predicted creativity while mind wandering did not. Additionally, a three-way interaction showed that mind wandering had a positive impact on creativity only among students with both high attention and high metacognition. These results reflect the relevance of cognitive self-regulation for creativity during the high school years. Educational implications are discussed.

What Do We Know About the Development of Creativity in South America?

We review recent research about the development of creativity in South America focusing on studies of individual differences in creativity and educational and developmental studies of children and adolescents' creativity. Most South American researchers are influenced by mainstream psychometric approaches, although computational and cultural approaches are also considered. Two main areas of inquiry are: (a) the relationship between creativity and other constructs, and (b) the structural and cultural inhibitors of creativity in school. Studies conducted beyond the school shed light on the role resilience has in fostering creativity. The lack of studies testing interventions aimed at promoting creativity is concerning. There is also a surprising lack of observational studies related to the pedagogy of creativity. Last but not least, there is a need to advance research on other factors, in addition to the educational ones, that may play a role in fostering creativity in South America.
