Modulation of the isomerization of iminothioindoxyl switches by supramolecular confinement

Here we present the formation of an iminothioindoxyl (ITI)⊂Cage complex that retains the photochemical properties of the photoswitch within a confined environment in water. At the same time, besides ultrafast switching inside the cage, the ITI photoswitch displays an intriguing bifurcation of the excited state isomerization pathway when encapsulated.

The photochemical trans → cis and thermal cis → trans isomerization pathways of azobenzo-13-crown ether: A computational study on a strained cyclic azobenzene system

The isomerization of azobenzo-13-crown ether can be expected to be hindered due to the polyoxyethylene linkage connecting the 2,2'-positions of azobenzene. Orthogonal Photoswitching in a Porous Organic Framework

The development of photoresponsive systems with non-invasive orthogonal control by distinct wavelengths of light is still in its infancy. In particular, the design of photochemically triggered-orthogonal systems integrated into solid materials that enable multiple dynamic control over their properties remains a longstanding challenge. Here, we report the orthogonal and reversible control of two types of photoswitches in an integrated solid porous framework, that is, visible-light responsive o-fluoroazobenzene and nitro-spiropyran motifs. The properties of the constructed material can be selectively controlled by different wavelengths of light thus generating four distinct states providing a basis for dynamic multifunctional materials. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy demonstrated the selective transformation of the azobenzene switch in the bulk, which in turn modulates N2 and CO2 adsorption.

Uncovering tetrazoles as building blocks for constructing discrete and polymeric assemblies

Metal-organic self-assembly with flexible moieties is a budding field of research due to the possibility of the formation of unique architectures. Tetrazole, characterised by four nitrogen atoms in a five-member ring, exhibits immense potential as a component. Tetrazole offers four coordination sites for binding to the metal centre with nine distinct binding modes, leading to various assemblies. This review highlights different polymeric and discrete tetrazole-based assemblies and their functions. The meticulous manipulation of stoichiometry, ligands, and metal ions required for constructing discrete assemblies has also been discussed. The different applications of these architectures in separation, catalysis and detection have also been accentuated. The latter section of the review consolidates tetrazole-based cage composites, highlighting their applications in cell imaging and photocatalytic applications.

Optical Phenomena in Molecule-Based Magnetic Materials

Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

A photochromic trinuclear dysprosium(iii) single-molecule magnet with two distinct relaxation processes

Multifunctional molecules responsive to light are highly desired as components for the construction of remotely controlled nanodevices. Here we present a DyIII single molecule magnet (SMM) comprising dithienylethene (dte) photochromic bridging ligands in the form of a pyridine (py) derivative: 1,2-bis((2-methyl-5-pyridyl)thie-3-yl)perfluorocyclo-pentene (dtepy). The title trinuclear compound {[DyIII(BHT)3]3(dtepy)2}·4C5H12 (1) was synthesized by combining the low-coordinate dysprosium complexes DyIII(BHT)3 (BHT = 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenolate) with dtepy bridging ligands in the 'open' form using n-pentane as a completely inert solvent. The trinuclear molecule comprises two different DyIII centers due to its quasi-linear geometry: a central trigonal bipyramidal DyIII ion and two peripheral ones with an approximate trigonal pyramidal geometry. Thanks to that, 1 shows two types of SMM behavior which is slightly affected by the photoisomerization of the photochromic dtepy bridges. The impact of the photoisomerization on the magnetization dynamics was studied by means of alternating current (AC) magnetic susceptibility measurements for the 'open' and 'closed' forms of the molecules. The changes between the 'open' and 'closed' isomers were further investigated by IR and UV-vis spectroscopy, suggesting the co-existence of the ligand-related photochromism and single-molecule magnet behavior in 1. However, the powder X-ray diffraction studies indicate loss of structural order in the first photoisomerization step preventing in-depth studies.

Photoswitching the fluorescence of nanoparticles for advanced optical applications

The dynamic optical response properties and the distinct features of nanomaterials make photoswitchable fluorescent nanoparticles (PF NPs) attractive candidates for advanced optical applications. Over the past few decades, the design of PF NPs by coupling photochromic and fluorescent motifs at the nanoscale has been actively pursued, and substantial efforts have been made to exploit their potential applications. In this perspective, we critically summarize various design principles for fabricating these PF NPs. Then, we discuss their distinct optical properties from different aspects by highlighting the capability of NPs in fabricating new, robust photoswitch systems. Afterwards, we introduce the pivotal role of PF NPs in advanced optical applications, including sensing, anti-counterfeiting and imaging. Finally, current challenges and future development of PF NPs are briefly discussed.

What Happens to a Pyrrole Hemithioindigo Photoswitch Trapped in a Fluorescent Protein?

Artificial molecular photoswitches that can be reversibly controlled into different configurations by external light stimulation have broad application prospects in various fields, such as materials and chemical biology. Among them, the pyrrole hemithioindigo (PHT) photoswitch has a geometric structure similar to that of the fluorescent protein chromophore. What happens when the chromophore is replaced by PHT, and does it achieve similar functions to the original one? To answer these questions, we carried out ONIOM(QM/MM) and classical molecular dynamics studies on the photoisomerization mechanism and spectroscopic properties of PHT in the fluorescent protein. The results showed that in the protein environment, the fate of excited PHT is governed by the competition between fluorescence emission and hula-twist isomerization. Due to the strong steric hindrance effects caused by the interlacing residues in the protein that restrict the PHT conformation transformation, the cis-to-trans isomerization process of PHT needs to overcome a barrier of at least 4.9 kcal/mol; thus, fluorescence emission is more dominant in competition. It is also found that the intermolecular interaction between LYS67 and the carbonyl oxygen of PHT has a significant effect on the fluorescence emission. These results revealed the photochemical reaction mechanism of a light-driven molecular switch in the fluorescent protein and provided further theoretical support for the field of chemical biology.

Construction of Multi-Stimuli Responsive Highly Porous Switchable Frameworks by In Situ Solid-State Generation of Spiropyran Switches

Stimuli-responsive molecular systems support within permanently porous materials offer the opportunity to host dynamic functions in multifunctional smart materials. However, the construction of highly porous frameworks featuring external-stimuli responsiveness, for example by light excitation, is still in its infancy. Here a general strategy is presented to construct spiropyran-functionalized highly porous switchable aromatic frameworks by modular and high-precision anchoring of molecular hooks and an innovative in situ solid-state grafting approach. Three spiropyran-grafted frameworks bearing distinct functional groups exhibiting various stimuli-responsiveness are generated by two-step post-solid-state synthesis of a parent indole-based material. The quantitative transformation and preservation of high porosity are demonstrated by spectroscopic and gas adsorption techniques. For the first time, a highly efficient strategy is provided to construct multi-stimuli-responsive, yet structurally robust, spiropyran materials with high pore capacity which is proved essential for the reversible and quantitative isomerization in the bulk as demonstrated by solid-state NMR spectroscopy. The overall strategy allows to construct dynamic materials that undergoes reversible transformation of spiropyran to zwitterionic merocyanine, by chemical and physical stimulation, showing potential for pH active control, responsive gas uptake and release, contaminant removal, and water harvesting.

A supramolecular assembly-based strategy towards the generation and amplification of photon up-conversion and circularly polarized luminescence

For the molecular properties in which energy transfer/migration is determinantal, such as triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon up-conversion (TTAUC), the overall performance is largely affected by the intermolecular distance and relative molecular orientations. In such scenarios, tools that may steer the intermolecular interactions and provide control over molecular organisation in the bulk, become most valuable. Often these non-covalent interactions, found predominantly in supramolecular assemblies, enable pre-programming of the molecular network in the assembled structures. In other words, by employing supramolecular chemistry principles, an arrangement where molecular units are arranged in a desired fashion, very much like a Lego toy, could be achieved. This leads to enhanced energy transfer from one molecule to other. In recent past, chiral luminescent systems have attracted huge attention for producing circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). In such systems, chirality is a necessary requirement. Chirality induction/transfer through supramolecular interactions has been known for a long time. It was realized recently that it may help in the generation and amplification of CPL signals as well. In this review article we have discussed the applicability of self-/co-assembly processes for achieving maximum TTA-UC and CPL in various molecular systems.

Cavity-Shape-Dependent Divergent Chemical Reaction inside Aqueous Pd6L4 Cages

Chemical reactions inside the confined pockets of enzyme-mimicking hosts, such as cages and macrocycles, have been an emerging field of interest over the past decade. Although many such reactions are known, the use of such cages toward the divergent synthesis of nonisomeric products has not been well explored. Divergent synthesis is a technique of forming two or more distinct products from the same reagents by changing the catalyst or reaction conditions. Changing the shape of the cage can also change the nature and magnitude of the host-guest interactions. Thus, is it possible for such changes to cause differences in the reaction pathways leading to formation of nonisomeric products? Herein, we report a divergent chemical transformation of anthrone [anthracen-9(10H)-one] inside different water-soluble M6L4 cages. When anthrone was encapsulated inside a newly synthesized M6L4 octahedral cage 1, it dimerized to form dianthrone [9,9'-bianthracen-10,10'(9H,9'H)-dione]. In contrast, when the same chemical reaction was performed inside a M6L4 double-square shaped cage 2, it was oxidized to form anthraquinone [anthracene-9,10-dione]. Similar results were obtained with a different set of isomeric aqueous Pd6 cages 3a (octahedral cage) and 3b (double-square cage), indicating the dependence of the shape of cavity on the divergent synthesis. The present report demonstrates a unique example of different outcomes/results of a reaction depending on the shape of the molecular container, which was driven by the host-guest interactions and the preorganization of the substrates.

Visible light-responsive materials: the (photo)chemistry and applications of donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts in polymer science

Donor-acceptor Stenhouse adduct (DASA) photoswitches have gained a lot of attention since their discovery in 2014. Their negative photochromism, visible light absorbance, synthetic tunability, and the large property changes between their photoisomers make them attractive candidates over other commonly used photoswitches for use in materials with responsive or adaptive properties. The development of such materials and their translation into advanced technologies continues to widely impact forefront materials research, and DASAs have thus attracted considerable interest in the field of visible-light responsive molecular switches and dynamic materials. Despite this interest, there have been challenges in understanding their complex behavior in the context of both small molecule studies and materials. Moreover, incorporation of DASAs into polymers can be challenging due to their incompatibility with the conditions for most common polymerization techniques. In this review, therefore, we examine and critically discuss the recent developments and challenges in the field of DASA-containing polymers, aiming at providing a better understanding of the interplay between the properties of both constituents (matrix and photoswitch). The first part summarizes current understanding of DASA design and switching properties. The second section discusses strategies of incorporation of DASAs into polymers, properties of DASA-containing materials, and methods for studying switching of DASAs in materials. We also discuss emerging applications for DASA photoswitches in polymeric materials, ranging from light-responsive drug delivery systems, to photothermal actuators, sensors and photoswitchable surfaces. Last, we summarize the current challenges in the field and venture on the steps required to explore novel systems and expand both the functional properties and the application opportunities of DASA-containing polymers.

Supramolecular assembly of dendronized spiropyrans in aqueous solutions into nanospheres with photo- and thermo-responsive chiralities

Tailoring the amphiphilicity of a molecule through external stimuli can alter the balance between self-association and repulsion, resulting in different propensities for its assembly. Here we report on the supramolecular assembly of a series of dendronized spiropyrans (DSPs) in water. These DSPs carry 3-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) with either methoxyl or ethoxyl terminals for different hydrophilicities, and contain an Ala-Gly dipeptide to provide the chirality. These dendronized amphiphiles form supramolecular nanospheres in aqueous solutions with remarkable induced chirality to a level of 1.0 × 106 deg cm2 dmol-1. They can be tuned reversibly through photoisomerization of the spiropyran moieties from the hydrophobic SP form into the hydrophilic MC form, and can even become chirally silent through thermally mediated collapse of the dendritic OEGs. Photoisomerization of the spiropyran moieties in these DSPs is accompanied by simultaneous changes of UV absorption, fluorescence emission, supramolecular chirality and aqueous solution colors. These supramolecular nanospheres exhibit characteristic thermoresponsive behavior due to thermal collapse of the dendritic OEGs with their cloud point temperatures (Tcps) being dependent on the overall hydrophilicity of the molecules and also the aggregate morphologies resulting from how dendritic OEGs are wrapped around the aggregates. Both photo-irradiation-mediated isomerization of the spiropyran moieties and thermally mediated dehydration and collapse of the dendritic OEGs influence the amphiphilicity of these DSPs and their solvation by water, leading to varied driving forces for their assembly. NMR, circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, as well as DLS and AFM techniques are combined to follow the supramolecular assembly and illustrate the aggregation mechanism. All experimental results demonstrate that the reversible chirality of the aggregates originates from the balance between dendritic OEGs and spiropyran moieties against water solvation.

Visible light activated energy storage in solid-state Azo-BF2 switches

We present here a group of Azo-BF2 photoswitches that store and release energy in response to visible light irradiation. Unmodified Azo-BF2 switches have a planar structure with a large π-conjugation system, which hinders E-Z isomerization when in a compacted state. To address this challenge, we modified the switches with one or two aliphatic groups, which altered the intermolecular interactions and arrangement of the photochromes in the solid state. The derivative with two substituents exhibited a non-planar configuration that provided particularly large conformational freedom, allowing for efficient isomerization in the solid phase. Our discovery highlights the potential of using double aliphatic functionalization as a promising approach to facilitate solid-state switching of large aromatic photoswitches. This finding opens up new possibilities for exploring various photoswitch candidates for molecular solar thermal energy storage applications.

Light-driven nucleation, growth, and patterning of biorelevant crystals using resonant near-infrared laser heating

Spatiotemporal control over crystal nucleation and growth is of fundamental interest for understanding how organisms assemble high-performance biominerals, and holds relevance for manufacturing of functional materials. Many methods have been developed towards static or global control, however gaining simultaneously dynamic and local control over crystallization remains challenging. Here, we show spatiotemporal control over crystallization of retrograde (inverse) soluble compounds induced by locally heating water using near-infrared (NIR) laser light. We modulate the NIR light intensity to start, steer, and stop crystallization of calcium carbonate and laser-write with micrometer precision. Tailoring the crystallization conditions overcomes the inherently stochastic crystallization behavior and enables positioning single crystals of vaterite, calcite, and aragonite. We demonstrate straightforward extension of these principles toward other biorelevant compounds by patterning barium-, strontium-, and calcium carbonate, as well as strontium sulfate and calcium phosphate. Since many important compounds exhibit retrograde solubility behavior, NIR-induced heating may enable light-controlled crystallization with precise spatiotemporal control.

Disequilibrating azobenzenes by visible-light sensitization under confinement

Photoisomerization of azobenzenes from their stable E isomer to the metastable Z state is the basis of numerous applications of these molecules. However, this reaction typically requires ultraviolet light, which limits applicability. In this study, we introduce disequilibration by sensitization under confinement (DESC), a supramolecular approach to induce the E-to-Z isomerization by using light of a desired color, including red. DESC relies on a combination of a macrocyclic host and a photosensitizer, which act together to selectively bind and sensitize E-azobenzenes for isomerization. The Z isomer lacks strong affinity for and is expelled from the host, which can then convert additional E-azobenzenes to the Z state. In this way, the host-photosensitizer complex converts photon energy into chemical energy in the form of out-of-equilibrium photostationary states, including ones that cannot be accessed through direct photoexcitation.

Dual-Responsive Supramolecular Chiral Assemblies from Amphiphilic Dendronized Tetraphenylethylenes

Supramolecular assembly of amphiphilic molecules in aqueous solutions to form stimuli-responsive entities is attractive for developing intelligent supramolecular materials for bioapplications. Here we report on the supramolecular chiral assembly of amphiphilic dendronized tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) in aqueous solutions. Hydrophobic TPE moieties were connected to the hydrophilic three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) through a tripeptide proline-hydroxyproline-glycol (POG) to afford the characteristic topological structural effects of dendritic OEGs and the peptide linker. Both ethoxyl- and methoxyl-terminated dendritic OEGs were used to modulate the overall hydrophilicity of the dendronized TPEs. Their supramolecular aggregates exhibited thermoresponsive behavior that originated from the dehydration and collapse of the dendritic OEGs, and their cloud point temperatures (Tcps) were tailored by solution pH conditions. Furthermore, aggregation-induced fluorescent emission (AIE) from TPE moieties was used as an indicator to follow the assembly, which was reversibly tuned by temperature variation at different pH conditions. Supramolecular assemblies from these dendronized amphiphiles exhibited enhanced supramolecular chirality, which was dominated mainly by the interaction balance between TPE with dendritic OEG and TPE with POG moieties and was modulated through different solvation by changing solution temperature or pH conditions. More interestingly, ethoxyl-terminated dendritic OEG provided a much stronger shielding effect than its methoxyl-terminated counterpart to prevent amino groups within the peptide from protonation, even in strong acidic conditions, resulting in different responsive behavior to the solution temperature and pH conditions for these supramolecular aggregates.

Cooperative and Orthogonal Switching in the Solid State Enabled by Metal-Organic Framework Confinement Leading to a Thermo-Photochromic Platform

Cooperative behavior and orthogonal responses of two classes of coordinatively integrated photochromic molecules towards distinct external stimuli were demonstrated on the first example of a photo-thermo-responsive hierarchical platform. Synergetic and orthogonal responses to temperature and excitation wavelength are achieved by confining the stimuli-responsive moieties within a metal-organic framework (MOF), leading to the preparation of a novel photo-thermo-responsive spiropyran-diarylethene based material. Synergistic behavior of two photoswitches enables the study of stimuli-responsive resonance energy transfer as well as control of the photoinduced charge transfer processes, milestones required to advance optoelectronics development. Spectroscopic studies in combination with theoretical modeling revealed a nonlinear effect on the material electronic structure arising from the coordinative integration of photoresponsive molecules with distinct photoisomerization mechanisms. Thus, the reported work covers multivariable facets of not only fundamental aspects of photoswitch cooperativity, but also provides a pathway to modulate photophysics and electronics of multidimensional functional materials exhibiting thermo-photochromism.

Unexplored Isomerization Pathways of Azobis(benzo-15-crown-5): Computational Studies on a Butterfly Crown Ether

Computational studies on trans → cis and cis → trans isomerizations of photoresponsive azobis(benzo-15-crown-5) have been reported in this work. Ligand-protected nanocluster-mediated photoswitchable fluorescent nanoprobes towards dual-color cellular imaging

Development of robust multi-color photoswitchable fluorescent probes is critical for many optical applications, but it remains a challenge to rationally design these probes. Here, we report a new design of Förster resonance energy transfer-based dual-color photoswitchable fluorescent nanoparticles (DPF NPs) by taking advantage of the distinct properties of ligand-protected gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). Detailed photophysical studies revealed that ultrasmall-sized AuNCs not only act as the FRET donors due to their intrinsic fluorescence properties, but also play a significant role in regulating the photochromic and aggregate properties of spiropyran through ligand-spiropyran interactions. These DPF NPs exhibit a high fluorescence on/off ratio (∼90%) for both green and red fluorescence emission, and good reversibility during cycled photo-stimulation. Cell imaging experiments showed that DPF NPs could specifically accumulate in lipid droplets, and enable photoswitchable dual-color imaging in living cells. Moreover, by labeling mitochondria with a green-emitting marker, we demonstrated that DPF NPs can distinguish different targets based on dynamic and static fluorescence signals at the sub-cellular level in two emission channels reliably. This study provides a new strategy for designing robust photoswitchable fluorescent probes by modulating the properties of photochromic dyes through ligand-protected nanoclusters, which can be generalized for the development of other photoswitch systems towards advanced optical applications.

Light-driven self-assembly of spiropyran-functionalized covalent organic framework

Controlling the number of molecular switches and their relative positioning within porous materials is critical to their functionality and properties. The proximity of many molecular switches to one another can hinder or completely suppress their response. Herein, a synthetic strategy involving mixed linkers is used to control the distribution of spiropyran-functionalized linkers in a covalent organic framework (COF). The COF contains a spiropyran in each pore which exhibits excellent reversible photoswitching behavior to its merocyanine form in the solid state in response to UV/Vis light. The spiro-COF possesses an urchin-shaped morphology and exhibits a morphological transition to 2D nanosheets and vesicles in solution upon UV light irradiation. The merocyanine-equipped COFs are extremely stable and possess a more ordered structure with enhanced photoluminescence. This approach to modulating structural isomerization in the solid state is used to develop inkless printing media, while the photomediated polarity change is used for water harvesting applications.

Second order nonlinear optical properties of poled films containing azobenzenes tailored with azulen-1-yl-pyridine

Azo compounds, which are highly versatile molecules, have attracted a considerable attention both for their fundamental properties and for practical applications, especially in photonics. The conjugated azo-aromatic systems containing 4-(R-azulen-1-yl)-2,6-dimethyl-pyridine were investigated for their nonlinear optical properties. These molecules were embedded in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) matrix, and the obtained guest-host systems were processed into good optical quality thin film by spin coating technique. The dipolar moments of dissolved in PMMA molecules were oriented by applying a high DC electric field at a temperature close to the polymer glass transition temperature. The second - order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of poled films were studied by the optical second harmonic generation technique (SHG). The poling kinetics, studied by in situ SHG as well as the measured second-order NLO susceptibilities of poled films are reported and discussed.

Water-Soluble Pd6L3 Molecular Bowl for Separation of Phenanthrene from a Mixture of Isomeric Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Phenanthrene is a high-value raw material in chemical industries. Separation of phenanthrene from isomeric anthracene continues to be a big challenge in the industry due to their very similar physical properties. Herein, we report the self-assembly of a water-soluble molecular bowl (TB) from a phenothiazine-based unsymmetrical terapyridyl ligand (L) and a cis-blocked 90° Pd(II) acceptor. TB featured an unusual bowl-like topology, with a wide rim diameter and a hydrophobic inner cavity fenced by the aromatic rings of the ligand. The above-mentioned features of TB allow it to bind polyaromatic hydrocarbons in its confined cavity. TB shows a higher affinity for phenanthrene over its isomer anthracene in water, which enables it to separate phenanthrene with ∼93% purity from an equimolar mixture of phenanthrene and anthracene. TB is also able to extract pyrene with around ∼90% purity from an equimolar mixture of coronene, perylene, and pyrene. Moreover, TB can be reused for several cycles without significant degradation in its performance as an extracting agent. This clean strategy of separation of phenanthrene and pyrene from a mixture of hydrophobic hydrocarbons by aqueous extraction is noteworthy.

[2,2] Paracyclophanes-based double helicates for constructing artificial light-harvesting systems and white LED device

The construction of efficient artificial light-harvesting systems (ALHSs) is of vital importance in utilizing solar energy. Herein, we report the non-covalent syntheses of double helicates PCP-TPy1/2 and Rp,Rp-PCP-TPy1/2 by metal-coordination interaction and their applications in ALHSs and white light-emitting diode (LED) device. All double helicates exhibit significant aggregation-induced emission in tetrahydrofuran/water (1:9, v/v) solvent. The aggregated double helicates can be used to construct one-step or sequential ALHSs with fluorescent dyes Eosin Y (EsY) and Nile red (NiR) with the energy transfer efficiency up to 89.3%. Impressively, the PMMA film of PCP-TPy1 shows white-light emission when doped 0.075% NiR, the solid of double helicates (Rp,Rp-) PCP-TPy2 can be used as the additive of a blue LED bulb to achieve white-light emission. In this work, we provided a general method for the preparation of novel double helicates and explored their applications in ALHSs and fluorescent materials, which will promote future construction and application of helicates as emissive devices.

Photoexcitation-Induced Assembly: A Bottom-Up Physical Strategy for Driving Molecular Motion and Phase Evolution

ConspectusIn the field of molecular assembly, photodriven self-assembly is a smart and crucial strategy to regulate the molecular orderliness, multiscale structure, and optoelectronic properties. Traditionally, photodriven self-assembly is based on photochemical processes, through molecular structural change induced by photoreactions. Despite great progress in the photochemical self-assembly, there still exists disadvantages (e.g., the photoconversion rate never reaches 100% with the possible side reactions). Therefore, the photoinduced nanostructure and morphology are often difficult to predict due to insufficient phase transition or defects. In contrast, the physical processes based on photoexcitation are straightforward and can fully utilize photons to avoid the drawbacks of photochemistry. The photoexcitation strategy excludes the change of molecular structure, only utilizing the molecular conformational change from the ground state to excited state. Then, the excited state conformation is employed to drive molecular movement and aggregation, further promoting the synergistic assembly or phase transition of the entire material system. The regulation and exploration of molecular assembly upon photoexcitation can open up a new paradigm to deal with the "bottom-up" behavior and develop unprecedented optoelectronic functional materials.This Account starts with a brief introduction to the problems faced by photocontrolled self-assembly and presents the photoexcitation-induced assembly (PEIA) strategy. Then, we focus on exploring PEIA strategy based on persulfurated arenes as the prototype. The molecular conformational transition of persulfurated arenes from the ground state to the excited state is conducive to the formation of intermolecular interactions, successively driving molecular motion, aggregation, and assembly. Next, we describe our progress in exploring PEIA of persulfurated arenes at the molecular level and then demonstrate that the PEIA of persulfurated arenes can synergistically drive molecular motion and phase transition in various block copolymer systems. Moreover, we provide the potential applications of PEIA in dynamic visual imaging, information encryption, and surface property regulation. Finally, an outlook on further development of PEIA is prospected.

Photo- and Temperature-Induced Reversible Structural Transformation between Dodecanuclear and Pentadecanuclear Gold(I) Sulfido Complexes

Stimuli-responsive structural transformation has attracted much attention for its potential to mimic the behavior of biological transformations and functions. Here, two unprecedented dodecanuclear and pentadecanuclear gold(I) sulfido clusters (denoted trans-Au₁₂ and trans-Au₁₅, respectively) with impressive stimuli-responsive interconversion have been obtained by taking advantage of the judiciously designed tridentate phosphine ligand L_trans as the building block. Both UV light and temperature can be applied to trigger the structural conversions between trans-Au₁₂ and trans-Au₁₅. In addition, NMR, high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy have been employed to monitor the transformation process and decipher the mechanism of structural conversion. This work not only provides a paradigm to investigate photo-induced cluster-to-cluster transformation based on polydentate phosphine ligands but also offers a new direction for the construction of the stimuli-responsive materials.

Light Modulated Reversible "On-Off" Transformation of Arylazoheteroarene Based Discotics in Nematic Organization

Three benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxamide (BTA) core-based molecular systems appended with phenylazo-3,5-dimethylisoxazole photoswitches at the peripheral position through variable-length alkoxy chains have been designed and synthesized. The supramolecular interactions of the mesogens provided discotic nematic liquid crystalline assembly as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies. Spectroscopic studies confirmed the reversible photoswitching and excellent thermal stability of the photoswitched states in solution phase and thin film. Also, atomic force microscopic (AFM) and POM investigations demonstrated the morphological changes in the self-assembly induced by the photoirradiation as monitored by the changes in the height profiles and optical appearance of the textures, respectively. Remarkably, the liquid crystalline discotic molecules showed reversible "on and off states" controlled by light at ambient temperature.

Confinement-Driven Photophysics in Hydrazone-Based Hierarchical Materials

Confinement-imposed photophysics was probed for novel stimuli-responsive hydrazone-based compounds demonstrating a conceptual difference in their behavior within 2D versus 3D porous matrices for the first time. The challenges associated with photoswitch isomerization arising from host interactions with photochromic compounds in 2D scaffolds could be overcome in 3D materials. Solution-like photoisomerization rate constants were realized for sterically demanding hydrazone derivatives in the solid state through their coordinative immobilization in 3D scaffolds. According to steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements and theoretical modeling, this approach provides access to hydrazone-based materials with fast photoisomerization kinetics in the solid state. Fast isomerization of integrated hydrazone derivatives allows for probing and tailoring resonance energy transfer (ET) processes as a function of excitation wavelength, providing a novel pathway for ET modulation.

Metal-Photoswitch Friendship: From Photochromic Complexes to Functional Materials

Cooperative metal-photoswitch interfaces comprise an application-driven field which is based on strategic coupling of metal cations and organic photochromic molecules to advance the behavior of both components, resulting in dynamic molecular and material properties controlled through external stimuli. In this Perspective, we highlight the ways in which metal-photoswitch interplay can be utilized as a tool to modulate a system's physicochemical properties and performance in a variety of structural motifs, including discrete molecular complexes or cages, as well as periodic structures such as metal-organic frameworks. This Perspective starts with photochromic molecular complexes as the smallest subunit in which metal-photoswitch interactions can occur, and progresses toward functional materials. In particular, we explore the role of the metal-photoswitch relationship for gaining fundamental knowledge of switchable electronic and magnetic properties, as well as in the design of stimuli-responsive sensors, optically gated memory devices, catalysts, and photodynamic therapeutic agents. The abundance of stimuli-responsive systems in the natural world only foreshadows the creative directions that will uncover the full potential of metal-photoswitch interactions in the coming years.

Space-Confined Nucleation of Semimetal-Oxo Clusters within a [H7P8W48O184]33- Macrocycle: Synthesis, Structure, and Enhanced Proton Conductivity

Spatially confined assembly of semimetallic oxyanions (AsO₃^3- and SbO₃^3-) within a [H₇P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄]^33- (P₈W₄₈) macrocycle has afforded three nanoscale polyanions, [{As^III₅O₄(OH)₃}₂(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]^32- (As₁₀), [(Sb^IIIOH)₄(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]^32- (Sb₄), and [(Sb^IIIOH)₈(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]^24- (Sb₈), which were crystallized as the hydrated mixed-cation salts (Me₂NH₂)₁₃K₇Na₂Li₁₀[{As^III₅O₄(OH)₃}₂(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]·32H₂O (DMA-KNaLi-As₁₀), K₂₀Li₁₂[(Sb^IIIOH)₄(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]·52H₂O (KLi-Sb₄), and (Me₂NH₂)₈K₆Na₅Li₅[(Sb^IIIOH)₈(P₈W₄₈O₁₈₄)]·65H₂O (DMA-KNaLi-Sb₈), respectively. A multitude of solid- and solution-state physicochemical techniques were employed to systematically characterize the structure and composition of the as-made compounds. The polyanion of As₁₀ represents the first example of a semimetal-oxo cluster-substituted P₈W₄₈ and accommodates the largest As^III-oxo cluster in polyoxometalates (POMs) reported to date. The number of incorporated SbO₃^3- groups in Sb₄ and Sb₈ could be customized by a simple variation of Sb^III-containing precursors. Encapsulation of semimetallic oxyanions inside P₈W₄₈ sets out a valid strategy not only for the development of host-guest assemblies in POM chemistry but also for their function expansion in emerging applications such as proton-conducting materials, for which DMA-KNaLi-As₁₀ showcases an outstanding conductivity of 1.2 × 10^-2 S cm^-1 at 85 °C and 70% RH.

Thermal and (Thermo-Reversible) Photochemical Cycloisomerization of 1H-2-Benzo[c]oxocins: From Synthetic Applications to the Development of a New T-Type Molecular Photoswitch

A novel T-type molecular photoswitch based on the reversible cyclization of 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins to dihydro-4H-cyclobuta[c]isochromenes has been developed. The switching mechanism involves a light-triggered ring-contraction of 8-membered 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins to 4,6-fused O-heterocyclic dihydro-4H-cyclobuta[c]isochromene ring systems, with reversion back to the 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocin state accessible through heating. Both processes are unidirectional and proceed with good efficiency, with switching properties─including reversibility and half-life time─easily adjusted via structural functionalization. Our new molecular-switching platform exhibits independence from solvent polarity, originating from its neutral-charge switching mechanism, a property highly sought-after for biological applications. The photoinduced ring-contraction involves a [2+2] conjugated-diene cyclization that obeys the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. In contrast, the reverse process initiates via a thermal ring-opening (T > 60 °C) to produce the original 8-membered 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins, which is thermally forbidden according to the Woodward-Hoffmann rules. The thermal ring-opening is likely to proceed via an ortho-quinodimethane (o-QDM) intermediate, and the corresponding switching mechanisms are supported by experimental observations and density functional theory calculations. Other transformations of 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins were found upon altering reaction conditions: prolonged heating of the 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins at a significantly elevated temperature (72 h at 120 °C), with the resulting dihydronaphthalenes formed via the o-QDM intermediate. These reactions also proceed with good chemoselectivities, providing new synthetic protocols for motifs found in several bioactive molecules, but are otherwise difficult to access.

Multiple Effects of an Anionic Cyclodextrin Macrocycle on the Reversible Isomerization of a Photoactive Guest Dye

Understanding and controlling the reversible isomerization of photoactive molecules in order to obtain a tunable optical response is desirable for many photofunctional applications. This study describes the interesting effects of an anionic cyclodextrin host (sulfated-βCD, SCD) on the photoisomerization and protonation equilibrium of an important hemicyanine dye (trans-4-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-methylpyridinium iodide, DSP). The SCD host assists in unlocking the photoisomerization potential of DSP by promoting protonation of the dye. It also assists in stabilizing the cis isomer of the protonated dye, thereby significantly delaying the reverse cis to trans isomerization of DSPH⁺. Furthermore, the interplay of both hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions in the complex formation of SCD with DSPH⁺ makes the reverse cis to trans isomerization of DSPH⁺ amenable to influence by the added salt. The stimuli-responsive reversible isomerization of SCD-DSPH⁺ is an interesting case from the perspective of chemical sensing or light operated functional materials with host-guest systems.

Unraveling the timescale of the structural photo-response within oriented metal-organic framework films

Fundamental knowledge on the intrinsic timescale of structural transformations in photo-switchable metal-organic framework films is crucial to tune their switching performance and to facilitate their applicability as stimuli-responsive materials. In this work, for the first time, an integrated approach to study and quantify the temporal evolution of structural transformations is demonstrated on an epitaxially oriented DMOF-1-on-MOF film system comprising azobenzene in the DMOF-1 pores (DMOF-1/AB). We employed time-resolved Grazing Incidence Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering measurements to track the structural response of the DMOF-1/AB film upon altering the length of the azobenzene molecule by photo-isomerization (trans-to-cis, 343 nm; cis-to-trans, 450 nm). Within seconds, the DMOF-1/AB response occurred fully reversible and over several switching cycles by cooperative photo-switching of the oriented DMOF-1/AB crystallites as confirmed further by infrared measurements. Our work thereby suggests a new avenue to elucidate the timescales and photo-switching characteristics in structurally responsive MOF film systems.

Shifting the Triangle-Square Equilibrium of Self-Assembled Metallocycles by Guest Binding with Enhanced Photosensitization

Shifting a triangle-square equilibrium in one direction is an important problem in supramolecular self-assembly. Reaction of a benzothiadiazole-based diimidazole donor with a cis-Pt(II) acceptor yielded an equilibrium mixture of a triangle ([C₁₈H₂₄N₁₀O₆S₁Pt₁]₃≡ PtMC^T) and a square ([C₁₈H₂₄N₁₀O₆S₁Pt₁]₄≡ PtMC^S). We report here the shifting of such equilibrium toward a triangle using a guest (pyrene aldehyde, G1). While both benzothiadiazole and pyrene aldehyde can form reactive oxygen species (ROS) in organic solvents, their therapeutic use in water is restricted due to aqueous insolubility. The enhanced water solubility of the benzothiadiazole unit and G1 by macrocycle formation and host-guest complexation, respectively, enabled enhanced ROS generation by the host-guest complex (G1' ⊂ PtMC^T) in water (G1' = hydrated form of G1). The guest-encapsulated metallacycle (G1' ⊂ PtMC^T) has shown synergistic antibacterial activity compared to the mixture of macrocycles upon white-light irradiation due to enhanced ROS generation. The mechanism for such enhanced activity was established by measuring the oxidative stress and relative internalization of PtMCs and G1' ⊂ PtMC^T.

Guest‐Modulated Circularly Polarized Luminescence by Ligand‐to‐Ligand Chirality Transfer in Heteroleptic Pd II Coordination Cages

Multicomponent metallo‐supramolecular assembly allows the rational combination of different building blocks. Discrete multifunctional hosts with an accessible cavity can be prepared in a non‐statistical fashion. We employ our shape‐complementary assembly (SCA) method to achieve for the first time integrative self‐sorting of heteroleptic Pd^II cages showing guest‐tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). An enantiopure helicene‐based ligand (M or P configuration) is coupled with a non‐chiral emissive fluorenone‐based ligand (A or B) to form a series of Pd₂L₂L′₂ assemblies. The modular strategy allows to impart the chiral information of the helicenes to the overall supramolecular system, resulting in CPL from the non‐chiral component. Guest binding results in a 4‐fold increase of CPL intensity. The principle offers potential to generate libraries of multifunctional materials with applications in molecular recognition, enantioselective photo‐redox catalysis and information processing.

Spin-State Modulation in FeII -Based Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymers: From Molecules to Materials

Spin crossover complexes that reversibly interconvert between two stable states imitate a binary state of 0 and 1, delivering a promising possibility to address the data processing concept in smart materials. Thus, a comprehensive understanding of the modulation of magnetic transition between high spin and low spin and the factors responsible for stabilizing the spin states is an essential theme in modern materials design. In this context, the present review attempts to provide a concise outline of the design strategy employed at the molecular level for fine-tuning the spin-state switching in Fe^II -based Hofmann-type coordination polymers and their effects on the optical and magnetic response. In addition, development towards the nanoscale architectures of HCPs, i. e., in terms of nanoparticles and thin films, are emphasized to bridge the gap between the laboratory and reality.

Acylhydrazone-based supramolecular assemblies undergoing a converse sol-to-gel transition on trans → cis photoisomerization

Photoisomeric supramolecular assemblies have drawn enormous attention in recent years. Although it is a general rule that photoisomerization from a less to a more distorted isomer causes the destruction of assemblies, this photoisomerization process inducing a converse transition from irregular aggregates to regular assemblies is still a great challenge. Here, we report a converse sol-to-gel transition derived from the planar to nonplanar photoisomer conversion, which is in sharp contrast to the conventional light-induced gel collapse. A well-designed acylhydrazone-linked monomer is exploited as a photoisomer to realize the above-mentioned phase transition. In the monomer, imine is responsible for trans–cis interconversion and amide generates intermolecular hydrogen bonds enabling the photoisomerization-driven self-assembly. The counterintuitive feature of the sol-to-gel transition is ascribed to the partial trans → cis photoisomerization of acylhydrazone causing changes in stacking mode of monomers. Furthermore, the reversible phase transition is applied in the valves formed in situ in microfluidic devices, providing fascinating potential for miniature materials.

A converse sol-to-gel transition system based on trans → cis photoisomerization of acylhydrazone-based supramolecular assemblies has been sucessfully established, which was applied in the gel-based microvalves that can in situ control flow by light.

Ternary host-guest complexes with rapid exchange kinetics and photoswitchable fluorescence

Confinement within molecular cages can dramatically modify the physicochemical properties of the encapsulated guest molecules, but such host-guest complexes have mainly been studied in a static context. Combining confinement effects with fast guest exchange kinetics could pave the way toward stimuli-responsive supramolecular systems—and ultimately materials—whose desired properties could be tailored “on demand” rapidly and reversibly. Here, we demonstrate rapid guest exchange between inclusion complexes of an open-window coordination cage that can simultaneously accommodate two guest molecules. Working with two types of guests, anthracene derivatives and BODIPY dyes, we show that the former can substantially modify the optical properties of the latter upon noncovalent heterodimer formation. We also studied the light-induced covalent dimerization of encapsulated anthracenes and found large effects of confinement on reaction rates. By coupling the photodimerization with the rapid guest exchange, we developed a new way to modulate fluorescence using external irradiation.

Confinement of small molecules within the cavities of natural and synthetic hosts can greatly affect the physicochemical properties of the bound species; however, to date, such host-guest complexes have been studied mainly in a static context. An important direction is the development of host-guest systems, whereby encapsulation and release of guest molecules can be reversibly controlled using light. Here, we report ternary inclusion complexes comprising an open-window coordination cage and two kinds of photoactive guests, namely, the photodimerizable anthracenes and BODIPY dyes. Alternating exposure to two different colors of light shifts the equilibrium between the encapsulated homodimers and heterodimers, thus dramatically affecting the system’s optical properties. We also find that the rates of both processes—anthracene dimerization and guest exchange—strongly depend on the substitution pattern on both types of guests, which highlights the importance of confinement effects.

Photoswitchable Binary Nanopore Conductance and Selective Electronic Detection of Single Biomolecules under Wavelength and Voltage Polarity Control

We fabricated photoregulated thin-film nanopores by covalently linking azobenzene photoswitches to silicon nitride pores with ∼10 nm diameters. The photoresponsive coatings could be repeatedly optically switched with deterministic ∼6 nm changes to the effective nanopore diameter and of ∼3× to the nanopore ionic conductance. The sensitivity to anionic DNA and a neutral complex carbohydrate biopolymer (maltodextrin) could be photoswitched "on" and "off" with an analyte selectivity set by applied voltage polarity. Photocontrol of nanopore state and mass transport characteristics is important for their use as ionic circuit elements (e.g., resistors and binary bits) and as chemically tuned filters. It expands single-molecule sensing capabilities in personalized medicine, genomics, glycomics, and, augmented by voltage polarity selectivity, especially in multiplexed biopolymer information storage schemes. We demonstrate repeatedly photocontrolled stable nanopore size, polarity, conductance, and sensing selectivity, by illumination wavelength and voltage polarity, with broad utility including single-molecule sensing of biologically and technologically important polymers.

Photoinduced Metal-Free Borylation of Aryl Halides Catalysed by in situ Formed Donor-Acceptor Complex

Organoboron compounds are very important building blocks which can be applied in medicinal, biological and industrial fields. However, direct borylation in a metal free manner has been very rarely reported. Herein, we described the successful direct borylation of haloarenes under mild, operationally simple, catalyst-free conditions, promoted by irradiation with visible light. Mechanistic experiments and computational investigations indicate the formation of an excited donor–acceptor complex with a −3.12 V reduction potential, which is a highly active reductant and can facilitate single-electron-transfer (SET) with aryl halides to produce aryl radical intermediates. A two-step one-pot method was developed for site selective aromatic C–H bond borylation. The protocol's good functional group tolerance enables the functionalization of a variety of biologically relevant compounds, representing a new application of aryl radicals merged with photochemistry.

We reported a facile metal-free conversion of aryl halides to the corresponding boronic esters catalysed by an in situ formed donor–acceptor complex. A two-step one-pot method was also developed for site selective aromatic C–H bond borylation.

Selective separation of planar and non-planar hydrocarbons using an aqueous Pd6 interlocked cage

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) find multiple applications ranging from fabric dyes to optoelectronic materials. Hydrogenation of PAHs is often employed for their purification or derivatization. However, separation of PAHs from their hydrogenated analogues is challenging because of their similar physical properties. An example of such is the separation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene from phenanthrene/anthracene which requires fractional distillation at high temperature (∼340 °C) to obtain pure anthracene/phenanthrene in coal industry. Herein we demonstrate a new approach for this separation at room temperature using a water-soluble interlocked cage (1) as extracting agent by host–guest chemistry. The cage was obtained by self-assembly of a triimidazole donor L·HNO₃ with cis-[(tmeda)Pd(NO₃)₂] (M) [tmeda = N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethane-1,2-diamine]. 1 has a triply interlocked structure with an inner cavity capable of selectively binding planar aromatic guests.

We report here a triply interlocked cage with the ability to encapsulate planar guests in aqueous medium. This property was then employed to efficiently separate planar and non-planar aromatic hydrocarbons by aqueous extraction.
