Toward an Atomic-Level Understanding of Ceria-Based Catalysts: When Experiment and Theory Go Hand in Hand

An NIR-propelled janus nanomotor with enhanced ROS-scavenging, immunomodulating and biofilm-eradicating capacity for periodontitis treatment

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial biofilms, which leads to the destruction of periodontal tissue. Current treatments, such as mechanical cleaning and antibiotics, struggle to effectively address the persistent biofilms, inflammation, and tissue damage. A new approach involves developing a Janus nanomotor (J-CeM@Au) by coating cerium dioxide-doped mesoporous silica (CeM) with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). This nanomotor exhibits thermophoretic motion when exposed to near-infrared (NIR) laser light due to the temperature gradient produced by the photothermal effects of asymmetrically distributed AuNPs. The NIR laser provides the energy for propulsion and activates the nanomotor's antibacterial properties, allowing it to penetrate biofilms and kill bacteria. Additionally, the nanomotor's ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) can modulate the immune response and create a regenerative environment, promoting the healing of periodontal tissue. Overall, this multifunctional nanomotor offers a promising new approach for treating periodontitis by simultaneously addressing biofilm management and immune modulation with autonomous movement.

Theoretical study of structure sensitivity on ceria-supported single platinum atoms and its influence on carbon monoxide adsorption

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations explore the stability of a single platinum atom on various flat, stepped, and defective ceria surfaces, in the context of single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. The adsorption properties and diffusion kinetics of the metal strongly depend on the support termination with large stability on metastable and stepped CeO2(100) and (210) surfaces where the diffusion of the platinum atom is hindered. At the opposite, the more stable CeO2(111) and (110) terminations weakly bind the platinum atom and can promote the growth of metallic clusters thanks to fast diffusion kinetics. The adsorption of carbon monoxide on the single platinum atom supported on the various ceria terminations is also sensitive to the surface structure. Carbon monoxide weakly binds to the single platinum atom supported on reduced CeO2(111) and (211) terminations. The desorption of the CO2 formed during the WGS reaction is thus facilitated on the latter terminations. A vibrational analysis underlines the significant changes in the calculated scaled anharmonic CO stretching frequency on these catalysts.

Exploring the Facet-Dependent Structural Evolution of Pt/CeO2 Catalysts Induced by Typical Pretreatments for CO Oxidation

Atomic-scale insights into the interactions between metals and supports play a crucial role in optimizing catalyst design, understanding catalytic mechanisms, and enhancing chemical conversion processes. The effects of oxide support on the dynamic behavior of supported metal species during pretreatments or reactions have been attracting a lot of attention; however, very less systematic integrations are carried out experimentally using real catalysts. In this study, we here utilized facet-controlled CeO2 as examples to explore their influence on the supported Pt species (1.0 wt %) during the reducing and oxidizing pretreatments that are typically applied in heterogeneous catalysts. By employing a combination of microscopy, spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations, it is demonstrated that the exposed crystal facets of CeO2 govern the evolution behavior of supported Pt species under different environmental conditions. This leads to distinct local coordinations and charge states of the Pt species, which directly influence the catalytic reactivity and can be leveraged to control the catalytic performance for CO oxidation reactions.

Improved Selectivity and Stability in Methane Dry Reforming by Atomic Layer Deposition on Ni-CeO2-ZrO2/Al2O3 Catalysts

Ni can be used as a catalyst for dry reforming of methane (DRM), replacing more expensive and less abundant noble metal catalysts (Pt, Pd, and Rh) with little sacrifice in activity. Ni catalysts deactivate quickly under realistic DRM conditions. Rare earth oxides such as CeO2, or as CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 (CZA), are supports that improve both the activity and stability of Ni DRM systems due to their redox activity. However, redox-active supports can also enhance the undesired reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, reducing the hydrogen selectivity. In this work, Ni on CZA was coated with an ultrathin Al2O3 overlayer using atomic layer deposition (ALD) to study the effects of the overlayer on catalyst activity, stability, and H2/CO ratio. A low-conversion screening method revealed improved DRM activity and lower coking rate upon the addition of the Al2O3 ALD overcoat, and improvements were subsequently confirmed in a high-conversion reactor at long times onstream. The overcoated samples gave an H2/CO ratio of ∼1 at high conversion, much greater than uncoated catalysts, and no evidence of deactivation. Characterization of used (but still active) catalysts using several techniques suggests that active Ni is in formal oxidation state >0, Ni-Ce-Al is most likely present as a mixed oxide at the surface, and a nominal thickness of 0.5 nm for the Al2O3 overcoat is optimal.

Composition-dependent morphologies of CeO2 nanoparticles in the presence of Co-adsorbed H2O and CO2: a density functional theory study

Catalytic activity is affected by surface morphology, and specific surfaces display greater activity than others. A key challenge is to define synthetic strategies to enhance the expression of more active surfaces and to maintain their stability during the lifespan of the catalyst. In this work, we outline an ab initio approach, based on density functional theory, to predict surface composition and particle morphology as a function of environmental conditions, and we apply this to CeO2 nanoparticles in the presence of co-adsorbed H2O and CO2 as an industrially relevant test case. We find that dissociative adsorption of both molecules is generally the most favourable, and that the presence of H2O can stabilise co-adsorbed CO2. We show that changes in adsorption strength with temperature and adsorbate partial pressure lead to significant changes in surface stability, and in particular that co-adsorption of H2O and CO2 stabilizes the {100} and {110} surfaces over the {111} surface. Based on the changes in surface free energy induced by the adsorbed species, we predict that cuboidal nanoparticles are favoured in the presence of co-adsorbed H2O and CO2, suggesting that cuboidal particles should experience a lower thermodynamic driving force to reconstruct and thus be more stable as catalysts for processes involving these species.

Environment-Driven Variability in Absolute Band Edge Positions and Work Functions of Reduced Ceria

The absolute band edge positions and work function (Φ) are the key electronic properties of metal oxides that determine their performance in electronic devices and photocatalysis. However, experimental measurements of these properties often show notable variations, and the mechanisms underlying these discrepancies remain inadequately understood. In this work, we focus on ceria (CeO2), a material renowned for its outstanding oxygen storage capacity, and combine theoretical and experimental techniques to demonstrate environmental modifications of its ionization potential (IP) and Φ. Under O-deficient conditions, reduced ceria exhibits a decreased IP and Φ with significant sensitivity to defect distributions. In contrast, the IP and Φ are elevated in O-rich conditions due to the formation of surface peroxide species. Surface adsorbates and impurities can further augment these variabilities under realistic conditions. We rationalize the shifts in energy levels by separating the individual contributions from bulk and surface factors, using hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) embedded-cluster and periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations supported by interatomic-potential-based electrostatic analyses. Our results highlight the critical role of on-site electrostatic potentials in determining the absolute energy levels in metal oxides, implying a dynamic evolution of band edges under catalytic conditions.

Photocatalytic Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Performed by a Long-Afterglow Material

A micron-sized long-afterglow material, Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu,Ce, was utilized to conduct the hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction, two half-reactions of water splitting, in the presence of sacrificial agents under both light and dark conditions for the first time. The as-synthesized Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu,Ce exhibited higher photocatalytic activity compared to that of the referenced Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu and Sr2MgSi2O7:Ce samples. Herein, in addition to benefiting from the long photogenerated carrier lifetime of long-afterglow materials, the higher photocatalytic activity was attributed to the conjugated electronic structure between Eu and Ce ions. This structure facilitates charge and energy transfer between them, leading to an enhanced photocatalytic efficiency. This research provides a new strategy for designing efficient long-afterglow material photocatalysts through the construction of conjugated electronic structures.

Implications of size dispersion on X-ray scattering of crystalline nanoparticles: CeO2 as a case study

Controlling the shape and size dispersivity and crystallinity of nanoparticles (NPs) has been a challenge in identifying these parameters' role in the physical and chemical properties of NPs. The need for reliable quantitative tools for analyzing the dispersivity and crystallinity of NPs is a considerable problem in optimizing scalable synthesis routes capable of controlling NP properties. The most common tools are electron microscopy (EM) and X-ray scattering techniques. However, each technique has different susceptibility to these parameters, implying that more than one technique is necessary to characterize NP systems with maximum reliability. Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) is mandatory to access information on crystallinity. In contrast, EM or small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is required to access information on whole NP sizes. EM provides average values on relatively small ensembles in contrast to the bulk values accessed by X-ray techniques. Besides the fact that the SAXS and WAXS techniques have different susceptibilities to size distributions, SAXS is easily affected by NP-NP interaction distances. Because of all the variables involved, there have yet to be proposed methodologies for cross-analyzing data from two techniques that can provide reliable quantitative results of dispersivity and crystallinity. In this work, a SAXS/WAXS-based methodology is proposed for simultaneously quantifying size distribution and degree of crystallinity of NPs. The most reliable easy-to-access size result for each technique is demonstrated by computer simulation. Strategies on how to compare these results and how to identify NP-NP interaction effects underneath the SAXS intensity curve are presented. Experimental results are shown for cubic-like CeO2 NPs. WAXS size results from two analytical procedures are compared, line-profile fitting of individual diffraction peaks in opposition to whole pattern fitting. The impact of shape dispersivity is also evaluated. Extension of the proposed methodology for cross-analyzing EM and WAXS data is possible.

Understanding and controlling the formation of single-atom site from supported Cu10 cluster by tuning CeO2 reducibility: Theoretical insight into the Gd-doping effect on electronic metal-support interaction

Controlling the formation of single-atom (SA) sites from supported metal clusters is an important and interesting issue to effectively improve the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts. For extensively studied CO oxidation over metal/CeO2 systems, the SA formation and stabilization under reaction conditions is generally attributed to CO adsorption, however, the pivotal role played by the reducible CeO2 support and the underlying electronic metal-support interaction (EMSI) are not yet fully understood. Based on a ceria-supported Cu10 catalyst model, we performed density functional theory calculations to investigate the intrinsic SA formation mechanism and discussed the synergistic effect of Gd-doped CeO2 and CO adsorption on the SA formation. The CeO2 reducibility is tuned with doped Gd content ranging from 12.5 % ∼ 25 %. Based on ab initio thermodynamic and ab initio molecular dynamics, the critical condition for SA formation was identified as 21.875 % Gd-doped CeO2 with CO-saturated adsorption on Cu10. Electronic analysis revealed that the open-shell lattice Oδ- (δ < 2) generated by Gd doping facilitates the charge transfer from the bottom-corner Cu (Cubc) to CeO2. The CO-saturated adsorption further promotes this charge transfer process and enhances the EMSI between Cubc and CeO2, leading to the disintegration of Cubc from Cu10 and subsequent formation of the active SA site.

Importance of Metal-Support Interactions for CO2 Hydrogenation: An Operando Near-Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study on Gold-Loaded In2O3 and CeO2 Catalysts

Metal-support interactions, which are essential for the design of supported metal catalysts, used, e.g., for CO2 activation, are still only partially understood. In this study of gold-loaded In2O3 and CeO2 catalysts during CO2 hydrogenation using near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, supported by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure, we demonstrate that the role of the noble metal strongly depends upon the choice of the support material. Temperature-dependent analyses of X-ray photoelectron spectra under reaction conditions reveal that gold is reduced on CeO2, enabling direct H2 activation, but oxidized on In2O3, leading to decreased activity of Au/In2O3 compared to bare In2O3. At elevated temperatures, the catalytic activity of the In2O3 catalysts strongly increases as a result of facilitated CO2 and (In2O3-based) H2 activation, while the catalytic activity of Au/CeO2 is limited by reoxidation by CO2. Our results underline the importance of operando studies for understanding metal-support interactions to enable a rational support selection in the future.

Operando Mobile Catalysis for Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction

Metal atoms on the support serve as active sites for many heterogeneous catalysts. However, the active metal sites on the support are conventionally described as static, and the intermediates adsorbed on the support far away from the active metal sites cannot be transformed. Herein, we report the first example of operando mobile catalysis to promote catalytic efficiency by enhancing the collision probability between active sites and reactants or reaction intermediates. Specifically, ligand-coordinated Pt single atoms (isolated MeCpPt- species) are bonded on CeO2 and transformed into mobile MeCpPt(H)CO complexes during the reverse water gas shift reaction for operando mobile catalysis. This strategy enables the conversion of inert carbonate intermediates on the CeO2 support. A turnover frequency (TOF) of 6358 mol CO2  molPt -1  ⋅ h-1 and 99 % CO selectivity at 300 °C is obtained for reverse water gas shift reaction, dramatically higher than those of Pt catalysts reported in the literature. Operando mobile catalysis presents a promising strategy for designing high-efficiency heterogeneous catalysts for various chemical reactions and applications.

Ceria-Catalyzed Hydrolytic Cleavage of Sulfonamides

Nanoceria is a promising nanomaterial for the catalytic hydrolysis of a wide variety of substances. In this study, it was experimentally demonstrated for the first time that CeO2 nanostructures show extraordinary reactivity toward sulfonamide drugs (sulfadimethoxine, sulfamerazine, and sulfapyridine) in aqueous solution without any illumination, activation, or pH adjustment. Hydrolytic cleavage of various bonds, including S-N, C-N, and C-S, was proposed as the main reaction mechanism and was indicated by the formation of various reaction products, namely, sulfanilic acid, sulfanilamide, and aniline, which were identified by HPLC-DAD, LC-MS/MS, and NMR spectroscopy. The kinetics and efficiency of the ceria-catalyzed hydrolytic cleavage were dependent on the structure of the sulfonamide molecule and physicochemical properties of Nanoceria prepared by three different precipitation methods. However, in general, all three ceria samples were able to cleave SA drugs tested, proving the robust and unique surface reactivity toward these compounds inherent to cerium dioxide. The demonstrated reactivity of CeO2 to molecules containing sulfonamide or even sulfonyl (and similar) functional groups may be significant for both heterogeneous catalysis and environmentally important degradation reactions.

Inorganic Nanoparticles as Radiosensitizers for Cancer Treatment

Nanotechnology has expanded what can be achieved in our approach to cancer treatment. The ability to produce and engineer functional nanoparticle formulations to elicit higher incidences of tumor cell radiolysis has resulted in substantial improvements in cancer cell eradication while also permitting multi-modal biomedical functionalities. These radiosensitive nanomaterials utilize material characteristics, such as radio-blocking/absorbing high-Z atomic number elements, to mediate localized effects from therapeutic irradiation. These materials thereby allow subsequent scattered or emitted radiation to produce direct (e.g., damage to genetic materials) or indirect (e.g., protein oxidation, reactive oxygen species formation) damage to tumor cells. Using nanomaterials that activate under certain physiologic conditions, such as the tumor microenvironment, can selectively target tumor cells. These characteristics, combined with biological interactions that can target the tumor environment, allow for localized radio-sensitization while mitigating damage to healthy cells. This review explores the various nanomaterial formulations utilized in cancer radiosensitivity research. Emphasis on inorganic nanomaterials showcases the specific material characteristics that enable higher incidences of radiation while ensuring localized cancer targeting based on tumor microenvironment activation. The aim of this review is to guide future research in cancer radiosensitization using nanomaterial formulations and to detail common approaches to its treatment, as well as their relations to commonly implemented radiotherapy techniques.

Fine control for the preparation of ceria nanorods (111)

The morphologies and exposed surfaces of ceria nanocrystals are important factors in determining their performance. In order to establish a structure-property relationship for ceria nanomaterials, it is essential to have materials with well-defined morphologies and specific exposed facets. This is also crucial for acquiring high resolution ¹⁷O solid-state NMR spectra. In this study, we explore the synthesis conditions for preparing CeO₂ nanorods with exposed (111) facets. The effects of alkali concentration, hydrothermal temperature and time, cerium source and oxidation agent are investigated and optimal synthesis conditions are found. The resulting CeO₂ nanorods show very narrow ¹⁷O NMR peaks for the oxygen ions in the first, second and third layers, providing a foundation for future research on mechanisms involving ceria materials using ¹⁷O solid-state NMR spectroscopy.

Synthesis of mesoporous SiO2-CeO2 hybrid nanostructures with high catalytic activity for transamidation reaction

Transamidation reactions catalyzed by boronic acid derivatives and metal catalysts are well known nevertheless their requirement for elevated temperatures and long reaction times were considered major obstacles in converting amides to N-alkyl amides with the coupling of primary amides and amines. The acidic-basic co-existence of ceria nanoparticles is considered a perfect choice for different catalytic activities. Mesoporous silica on the other hand is well known for its use as a supporting material for catalysts owing to its excellent characteristics like large surface area, good absorption capacity, and high-temperature stability. The SiO₂-CeO₂ hybrid nanocomposite was prepared by solvothermal route followed by annealing and the formation of the catalyst was confirmed by XRD, EDX, FTIR, and TEM characterization techniques. The hybrid catalyst shows high catalytic activity towards transamidation reaction at very low temperatures and in solvent-free conditions compared to pure ceria nanoparticles. The SiO₂-CeO₂ catalyst showed more than 99% selectivity and a remarkable catalytic activity of above 90% for the conversion of N-heptyl amine with acetamide to N-heptyl acetamide at a very low temperature of 120 °C for 3 hours. Furthermore, the catalyst remains stable and active for repeated catalytic cycles. It established 80% catalytic activity even after 4 repeated cycles making it suitable for multiple-time usages.

In Situ Spectroscopy and Microscopy Insights into the CO Oxidation Mechanism on Au/CeO2(111)

In this work, we prepared and investigated in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) two stoichiometric CeO₂(111) surfaces containing low and high amounts of step edges decorated with 0.05 ML of gold using synchrotron-radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The UHV study helped to solve the still unresolved puzzle on how the one-monolayer-high ceria step edges affect the metal-substrate interaction between Au and the CeO₂(111) surface. It was found that the concentration of ionic Au⁺ species on the ceria surface increases with increasing number of ceria step edges and is not correlated with the concentration of Ce³⁺ ions that are supposed to form on the surface after its interaction with gold nanoparticles. We associated this with an additional channel of Au⁺ formation on the surface of CeO₂(111) related to the interaction of Au atoms with various peroxo oxygen species formed at the ceria step edges during the film growth. The study of CO oxidation on the highly stepped Au/CeO₂(111) model sample was performed by combining near-ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS), UHV-STM, and near-ambient-pressure STM (NAP-STM). This powerful combination provided comprehensive information on the processes occurring on the Au/CeO₂(111) surface during the interaction with CO, O₂, and CO + O₂ (1:1) mixture at conditions close to the real working conditions of CO oxidation. It was found that the system demonstrates high stability in CO. However, the surface undergoes substantial chemical and morphological changes as the O₂ is added to the reaction cell. Already at 300 K, gold nanoparticles begin to grow using a mechanism that involves the disintegration of small gold nanoparticles in favor of the large ones. With increasing temperature, the model catalyst quickly transforms into a system of primarily large Au particles that contains no ionic gold species.

Tuning ceria catalysts in aqueous media at the nanoscale: how do surface charge and surface defects determine peroxidase- and haloperoxidase-like reactivity

Designing the shape and size of catalyst particles, and their interfacial charge, at the nanometer scale can radically change their performance. We demonstrate this with ceria nanoparticles. In aqueous media, nanoceria is a functional mimic of haloperoxidases, a group of enzymes that oxidize organic substrates, or of peroxidases that can degrade reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as H₂O₂ by oxidizing an organic substrate. We show that the chemical activity of CeO_2-x nanoparticles in haloperoxidase- and peroxidase-like reactions scales with their active surface area, their surface charge, given by the ζ-potential, and their surface defects (via the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ratio). Haloperoxidase-like reactions are controlled through the ζ-potential as they involve the adsorption of charged halide anions to the CeO₂ surface, whereas peroxidase-like reactions without charged substrates are controlled through the specific surface area S_BET. Mesoporous CeO_2-x particles, with large surface areas, were prepared via template-free hydrothermal reactions and characterized by small-angle X-ray scattering. Surface area, ζ-potential and the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ratio are controlled in a simple and predictable manner by the synthesis time of the hydrothermal reaction as demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, sorption and ζ-potential measurements. The surface area increased with synthesis time, whilst the Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ ratio scales inversely with decreasing ζ-potential. In this way the catalytic activity of mesoporous CeO_2-x particles could be tailored selectively for haloperoxidase- and peroxidase-like reactions. The ease of tuning the surface properties of mesoporous CeO_2x particles by varying the synthesis time makes the synthesis a powerful general tool for the preparation of nanocatalysts according to individual needs.

In Situ DRIFTS Study of Single-Atom, 2D, and 3D Pt on γ-Al2O3 Nanoflakes and Nanowires for C2H4 Oxidation

Up to now, a great number of catalysts have been reported that are active in the oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, supported noble-metal catalysts (especially Pt-based catalysts) are still the most excellent ones for this reaction. In this study, Pt species supported on γ-Al2O3 and ranging from single-atom sites to clusters (less than 1 nm) and 1–2 nm nanoparticles were prepared and investigated for oxidizing C2H4. The Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanoflakes (PtAl-NF) and Pt-loaded γ-Al2O3 nanowires (PtAl-NW) were successfully prepared. The samples were characterized using XRD, TEM, XPS, HAADF-STEM, and in situ DRIFTS. Based on in situ DRIFTS, a simple surface reaction mechanism was developed. The stable intermediates CO on single-atom Pt, subnanometer Pt particles, and fully exposed Pt clusters could be explained by the strong binding of CO molecule poisoning Pt sites. Moreover, the oxidation of C2H4 was best achieved by Pt particles that were 1–2 nm in size and the catalytic activity of PtAl-NF was better when it had less Pt. Lastly, the most exposed (110) facets of γ-Al2O3 nanoflakes were more resistant to water than the majorly exposed (100) facets of γ-Al2O3 nanowires.

Cu-Ce oxide Co-loaded silicon nanocapsules for hydrogen peroxide self-supplied Fenton-like catalysis and synergistically antibacterial therapy

Antibacterial strategies based on reactive oxygen species (ROS) have opened up a new avenue for overcoming the great challenges of antibiotics topic including lack of broad-spectrum antibiotics and the emergence of super-resistant bacteria. Herein, we leveraged a strategy of constructing synergistic catalytic active sites to develop a simple yet efficient Fenton-like active nanocomposite, and investigated its catalysis mechanism and antibacterial performance thoroughly. This strategy provides a new direction for boosting the catalytic activity of nanocomposite catalysts for wide application. Specifically, by uniformly loading copper oxide and ceria onto the surface of silica nanocapsules (SiO₂ NCs), we fabricated a bimetallic oxide nanocomposite Cu_0.75Ce_0.62O₂@SiO₂ NC, which performed superior Fenton-like capability in a wide pH range without additional exogenetic hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂). Such excellent catalytic activity was originated from the charge interaction between the two metal oxide components, where formation of Cu⁺ and oxygen vacancies (OVs) was mutually reinforcing, resulting in a synergistic effect to produce H₂O₂ and catalyze the generation of •OH under the slight acid condition (pH = 6.0). In view of the outstanding Fenton-like activity, the Cu_0.75Ce_0.62O₂@SiO₂ NC was employed in antimicrobial testing, which demonstrated exceptional high in vitro antimicrobial efficacy against both the S. aureus and E. coli in a neutral environment (pH = 7.4). The excellent performance of the bimetallic nanocomposite Cu_0.75Ce_0.62O₂@SiO₂ NC, including its facile and mild preparation, high water-solubility and stability, superior catalytic and antimicrobial performances, manifests a promising broad-spectrum antibiotic that can be anticipated to deal with the contamination of the environment by bacteria.

Confinement chemistry of FeOx centers for activating molecular oxygen under ambient conditions

Activating molecular oxygen under mild conditions is highly important for developing advanced green technologies and for understanding the origin and running of life as well, which still remains a challenge. In this work, we report on the confinement chemistry for activating molecular oxygen over oxides under mild conditions by presenting the synthesis and characterization of FeO_x species confined to the pores of support CeO₂ nanospheres. Active catalytic materials are obtained by a controllable three-step method via the formation of porous CeO₂ nanospheres that have an average diameter of 120 nm and exhibit a large surface area of 168 m² g^-1 and a pore size of 18.7 nm, confining FeO_x in intimate contact with ultra-small Pt particles in pores. The optimized PtO_y-FeO_x/CeO₂-H catalyst showed an excellent performance in the preferential oxidation of CO reactions, as featured by 100% CO conversion at room temperature with almost no attenuation in a prolonged operation, which could not be accessible without pore-confined FeO_x centers. Mechanical studies prove that the reaction progresses via abnormal non-competitive adsorption associated with synergistic roles from uniform loading, stabilization of divalent Fe species, surface oxygen activation on CeO₂ supports, and the reduced H₂ spillover effect on Pt⁰, making the CO species adsorbed on Pt^δ+ easier to be desorbed. The methodology demonstrated here may inspire one to explore more advanced catalysts with high activity at room temperature essential for a wide range of applications.

Cerium metal oxidation studied by IR reflection-absorption and Raman scattering spectroscopies

Oxidation of cerium metal is a complex process which is strongly affected by the presence of water vapor in the oxidative atmosphere. Here, we explore, by means of infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) and Raman scattering spectroscopies, thin oxide films, formed on cerium metal during oxidation, under dry vs ambient (humid) air conditions (∼0.2% and ∼50% relative humidities, respectively) and compare them with a thin film of CeO₂deposited on a Si substrate. Complementary analysis of the thin films using x-ray diffraction and focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy enables the correlation between their structure and spectroscopic characterizations. The initial oxidation of cerium metal results in the formation of highly sub-stoichiometric CeO_2-x. Under dry air conditions, a major fraction of that oxide reacts with oxygen to form CeO_∼2, which is spectroscopically detected by Raman scatteringF_2gsymmetry mode and by IRAASF_1usymmetry mode, splitted into doubly-degenerate transverse optic and mono-degenerate longitudinally optic (LO) modes. In contrast, under ambient (humid) conditions, the oxide formed is more heterogenous, as the reaction of CeO_2-xdiverges towards the dominant formation of Ce(OH)₃. Prior to the spectral emergence of Ce(OH)₃, hydrogen ions incorporate into the highly sub-stoichiometric oxide, as manifested by Ce-H local vibrational mode detected in the Raman spectrum. The spectroscopic response of the thin oxide layer thus formed is more complex; particularly noted is the absence of the LO mode. It is attributed to the high density of microstructural and compositional defects in the oxide layer, which results in a heterogenous dielectric nature of the thin film, far from being representable by a single phase of CeO_∼2.

Chemiresistive NH3 detection at sub-zero temperatures by polypyrrole- loaded Sn1-xSbxO2 nanocubes

Chemiresistive gas sensors operate mainly at high temperatures, primarily due to the need of energy for surface adsorption-desorption of analytes. As a result, the operating temperature of the chemiresistive sensors could be reduced only to room temperature. Hence, a plethora of sensing requirements at temperatures below ambient have remained outside the scope of chemiresistive materials. In this work, we have developed an antimony-doped SnO₂ nanocube-supported expanded polypyrrole network that could detect low ppm ammonia gas (≤20 ppm) at sub-zero temperatures with high response (∼4), selectivity, and short response and recovery times. The low temperature chemiresistive sensing has been explained in terms of the interplay of an extended conducting network of an in situ deposited polymer, effective transport properties of majority charge carriers and a loosely bound exciton-like electron-hole pair formation and breakage mechanism.

Europium-Doped Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles for Microglial Amyloid Beta Clearance and Homeostasis

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder. Pathologically, the disease is characterized by the deposition of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques and the presence of neurofibrillary tangles. These drive microglia neuroinflammation and consequent neurodegeneration. While the means to affect Aβ plaque accumulation pharmacologically was achieved, how it affects disease outcomes remains uncertain. Cerium oxide (CeO₂) reduces Aβ plaques, oxidative stress, inflammation, and AD signs and symptoms. In particular, CeO₂ nanoparticles (CeO₂NPs) induce free-radical-scavenging and cell protective intracellular signaling. This can ameliorate the pathobiology of an AD-affected brain. To investigate whether CeO₂NPs affect microglia neurotoxic responses, a novel formulation of europium-doped CeO₂NPs (EuCeO₂NPs) was synthesized. We then tested EuCeO₂NPs for its ability to generate cellular immune homeostasis in AD models. EuCeO₂NPs attenuated microglia BV2 inflammatory activities after Aβ_1-42 exposure by increasing the cells' phagocytic and Aβ degradation activities. These were associated with increases in the expression of the CD36 scavenger receptor. EuCeO₂NPs facilitated Aβ endolysosomal trafficking and abrogated microglial inflammatory responses. We posit that EuCeO₂NPs may be developed as an AD immunomodulator.

Insights on catalytic mechanism of CeO2 as multiple nanozymes

CeO₂ with the reversible Ce³⁺/Ce⁴⁺ redox pair exhibits multiple enzyme-like catalytic performance, which has been recognized as a promising nanozyme with potentials for disease diagnosis and treatments. Tailorable surface physicochemical properties of various CeO₂ catalysts with controllable sizes, morphologies, and surface states enable a rich surface chemistry for their interactions with various molecules and species, thus delivering a wide variety of catalytic behaviors under different conditions. Despite the significant progress made in developing CeO₂-based nanozymes and their explorations for practical applications, their catalytic activity and specificity are still uncompetitive to their counterparts of natural enzymes under physiological environments. With the attempt to provide the insights on the rational design of highly performed CeO₂ nanozymes, this review focuses on the recent explorations on the catalytic mechanisms of CeO₂ with multiple enzyme-like performance. Given the detailed discussion and proposed perspectives, we hope this review can raise more interest and stimulate more efforts on this multi-disciplinary field.

Investigations of the Effect of H2 in CO Oxidation over Ceria Catalysts

The preferential CO oxidation (so-called CO-PROX) is the selective CO oxidation amid H2-rich atmospheres, a process where ceria-based materials are consolidated catalysts. This article aims to disentangle the potential CO–H2 synergism under CO-PROX conditions on the low-index ceria surfaces (111), (110) and (100). Polycrystalline ceria, nanorods and ceria nanocubes were prepared to assess the physicochemical features of the targeted surfaces. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transformed spectroscopy (DRIFTS) shows that ceria surfaces are strongly carbonated even at room temperature by the effect of CO, with their depletion related to the CO oxidation onset. Conversely, formate species formed upon OH + CO interaction appear at temperatures around 60 °C and remain adsorbed regardless the reaction degree, indicating that these species do not take part in the CO oxidation. Density functional theory calculations (DFT) reveal that ceria facets exhibit high OH coverages all along the CO-PROX reaction, whilst CO is only chemisorbed on the (110) termination. A CO oxidation mechanism that explains the early formation of carbonates on ceria and the effect of the OH coverage in the overall catalytic cycle is proposed. In short, hydroxyl groups induce surface defects on ceria that increase the COx–catalyst interaction, revealed by the CO adsorption energies and the stabilization of intermediates and readsorbed products. In addition, high OH coverages are shown to facilitate the hydrogen transfer to form less stable HCOx products, which, in the case of the (110) and (100), is key to prevent surface poisoning. Altogether, this work sheds light on the yet unclear CO–H2 interactions on ceria surfaces during CO-PROX reaction, providing valuable insights to guide the design of more efficient reactors and catalysts for this process.

Reactivity of a Chloride Decorated, Mixed Valent CeIII/IV38-Oxo Cluster

A cerium-oxo nanocluster capped by chloride ligands, [Ce^IV_38-nCe^III_nO_56-(n+1)(OH)_n+1Cl₅₁(H₂O)₁₁]^10- (n = 1-24), has been isolated from acidic chloride solutions by using potassium counterions. The crystal structure was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction. At the center of the cluster is a {Ce₁₄} core that exhibits the same fluorite-type structure as bulk CeO₂, with eight-coordinate Ce sites bridged by tetrahedral oxo anions. The {Ce₁₄} is further surrounded by a peripheral shell of six tetranuclear {Ce₄} subunits that are located on each of the faces of the core to yield the {Ce₃₈} cluster. The surface of the cluster is capped by 51 bridging/terminal chloride ligands and 11 water molecules; the anionic cluster is charge balanced by potassium counterions that exist in the outer coordination sphere. While assignment of the Ce oxidation state by bond valence summation was ambiguous, Ce L₃-edge X-ray absorption, X-ray photoelectron, and UV-vis-NIR absorption results were consistent with a Ce^III/Ce^IV cluster. Systematic changes in the XANES and UV-vis-NIR absorption spectra over time pointed to reactivity of the cluster upon exposure to air. These changes were examined using single crystal X-ray diffraction, and a clear single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation was captured; an overall loss of surface-bound chlorides and water molecules as well as new μ₂-OH sites was observed on the cluster surface. This work provides a rare snapshot of metal oxide cluster reactivity. The results may hold implications for understanding the physical and chemical properties of ceria nanoparticles and provide insight into the behavior of other metal-oxo clusters of significant technological and environmental interest.

Facet-dependent stability of near-surface oxygen vacancies and excess charge localization at CeO2surfaces

To study the dependence of the relative stability of surface (V^A) and subsurface (V^B) oxygen vacancies with the crystal facet of CeO₂, the reduced (100), (110) and (111) surfaces, with two different concentrations of vacancies, were investigated by means of density functional theory (DFT + U) calculations. The results show that the trend in the near-surface vacancy formation energies for comparable vacancy spacings, i.e. (110) < (100) < (111), does not follow the one in the surface stability of the facets, i.e. (111) < (110) < (100). The results also reveal that the preference of vacancies for surface or subsurface sites, as well as the preferred location of the associated Ce³⁺polarons, are facet- and concentration-dependent. At the higher vacancy concentration, theV^Ais more stable than theV^Bat the (110) facet whereas at the (111), it is the other way around, and at the (100) facet, both theV^Aand theV^Bhave similar stability. The stability of theV^Avacancies, compared to that of theV^B, is accentuated as the concentration decreases. Nearest neighbor polarons to the vacant sites are only observed for the less densely packed (110) and (100) facets. These findings are rationalized in terms of the packing density of the facets, the lattice relaxation effects induced by vacancy formation and the localization of the excess charge, as well as the repulsive Ce³⁺-Ce³⁺interactions.
