Nanoarchitectures for Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Nanoporous Carbons toward Supercapacitor Applications

A Highly Robust and Conducting Ultramicroporous 3D Fe(II)-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient Energy Storage

Exploitation of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials as active electrodes for energy storage or conversion is reasonably challenging owing to their poor robustness against various acidic/basic conditions and conventionally low electric conductivity. Keeping this in perspective, herein, a 3D ultramicroporous triazolate Fe-MOF (abbreviated as Fe-MET) is judiciously employed using cheap and commercially available starting materials. Fe-MET possesses ultra-stability against various chemical environments (pH-1 to pH-14 with varied organic solvents) and is highly electrically conductive (σ = 0.19 S m-1) in one fell swoop. By taking advantage of the properties mentioned above, Fe-MET electrodes give prominence to electrochemical capacitor (EC) performance by delivering an astounding gravimetric (304 F g-1) and areal (181 mF cm-2) capacitance at 0.5 A g-1 current density with exceptionally high cycling stability. Implementation of Fe-MET as an exclusive (by not using any conductive additives) EC electrode in solid-state energy storage devices outperforms most of the reported MOF-based EC materials and even surpasses certain porous carbon and graphene materials, showcasing superior capabilities and great promise compared to various other alternatives as energy storage materials.

Fabrication of binary metal-organic frameworks of Ni-Mn@ZIFs(Cox·Zn1-xO) decorated on CF/CuO nanowire for high-performance electrochemical pseudocapacitors

Herein, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived nanoflower-like based binary transition metal (Ni-Mn) are successfully fabricated by a simple synthesis method. The fabricated nanoflower-like structure displays a unique nanoflower-like architecture and internal porous channels constructed by MOF coated on CuO/CF/ZIFs (Cox·Zn1-xO) substrate, which is beneficial for the penetration of electrolyte and electron/ion transportation. The as-prepared CF/CuO/ZIFs (Cox·Zn1-xO)@BMOF(Ni-Mn) electrode materials present significant synergy among transition metal ions, contributing to enhanced electrochemical performances. The as-prepared CF/CuO/ZIFs (Cox·Zn1-xO)@BMOF(Ni-Mn) hybrid nanoflower-like display a high specific capacity of 1249.99 C g-1 at 1 A g-1 and the specific capacitance retention is about 91.74% after 5000 cycles. In addition, the as-assembled CF/CuO/ZIFs (Cox·Zn1-xO)@BMOF(Ni-Mn)//AC asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device exhibited a maximum energy density of 21.77 Wh·kg-1 at a power density of 799 W kg-1, and the capacity retention rate after 5000 charge and discharge cycles was 88.52%.

Tadpole-Like Carbon Nanotube with Fe Nanoparticle Encapsulated at the Head and Zn Single-Atom Anchored on the Body: One-Pot Carbonization for Tetramodal Synergistic Cancer Therapy

Precise integration of diverse therapeutic approaches into nanomaterials is the key to the development of multimodal synergistic cancer therapy. In this work, tadpole-like carbon nanotubes with Fe nanoparticle encapsulated at the head and Zn single-atom anchored on the body (Fe@CNT-Zn) is precisely designed and facilely prepared via one-pot carbonization. In vitro studies revealed the integration of chemotherapy (CT), chemodynamic therapy (CDT), photothermal therapy (PTT), and photodynamic therapy (PDT) in Fe@CNT-Zn as well as the near-infrared light (NIR)-responsive cascade therapeutic efficacy. Furthermore, in vivo studies demonstrated the NIR-triggered cascade-amplifying synergistic cancer therapy in a B16 tumor-bearing mouse model. The results not only showcased the Fe@CNT-Zn as a potential tetramodal therapeutic platform, but also demonstrated a proof-of-concept on metal-organic framework-based "one stone for multiple birds" strategy for in situ functionalization of carbon materials.

When nanozymes meet enzyme: Unlocking the dual-activity potential of integrated biocomposites

Integrating enzymes and nanozymes in various applications is a topic of significant interest. The researchers have explored the encapsulation of enzymes using diverse nanostructures to create nanomaterial-enzyme hybrids. These nanomaterials introduce unique properties that contribute to the additional activity along with the stabilization of enzymes in immobilized form, enabling a cascade of second-order reactions. This review centers on dual-activity nanozymes, providing insights into their applications in biosensors and biocatalysis. These applications leverage the enhanced catalytic activity and stability offered by dual-activity nanozymes. These nanozymes find promising applications in fields like bioremediation, offering eco-friendly solutions for mitigating environmental pollution while showing potential in medical diagnostics. The review delves into various techniques for creating enzyme-nanozyme hybrid catalysts, including adsorption, encapsulation, and incorporation methods. The review also addresses the challenges that must be overcome, such as overlapping catalytic surfaces and disparities in reaction rates in multi-enzyme cascade reactions. It concludes by presenting strategies to tackle these issues and offers insights into the field's promising future, suggesting that machine learning may drive further advancements in enzyme-nanozyme integration. This comprehensive exploration illuminates the present and charts a promising course for future innovations in the seamless integration of enzymes and nanozymes, heralding a new era of catalytic possibilities.

The Utilization of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives Composite in Supercapacitor Electrodes

Up to now, the mainstream adoption of renewable energy has brought about substantial transformations in the electricity and energy sector. This shift has garnered considerable attention within the scientific community. Supercapacitors, known for their exceptional performance metrics like good charge/discharge capability, strong power density, as well as extended cycle longevity, have gained widespread traction across various sectors, including transportation and aviation. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with unique traits including adaptable structure, highly customizable synthetic methods, and high specific surface area, have emerged as strong candidates for electrode materials. For enhancing the performance, MOFs are commonly compounded with other conducting materials to increase capacitance. This paper provides a detailed analysis of various common preparation strategies and characteristics of MOFs. It summarizes the recent application of MOFs and their derivatives as supercapacitor electrodes alongside other carbon materials, metal compounds, and conductive polymers. Additionally, the challenges encountered by MOFs in the realm of supercapacitor applications are thoroughly discussed. Compared to previous reviews, the content of this paper is more comprehensive, offering readers a deeper understanding of the diverse applications of MOFs. Furthermore, it provides valuable suggestions and guidance for future progress and development in the field of MOFs.

External Field-Responsive Ternary Non-Noble Metal Oxygen Electrocatalyst for Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries

Despite the increasing effort in advancing oxygen electrocatalysts for zinc-air batteries (ZABs), the performance development gradually reaches a plateau via only ameliorating the electrocatalyst materials. Herein, a new class of external field-responsive electrocatalyst comprising Ni0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4 stably dispersed on N-doped Ketjenblack (Ni0.5Mn0.5Fe2O4/N-KB) is developed via polymer-assisted strategy for practical ZABs. Briefly, the activity indicator ΔE is significantly decreased to 0.618 V upon photothermal assistance, far exceeding most reported electrocatalysts (generally >0.680 V). As a result, the photothermal electrocatalyst possesses comprehensive merits of excellent power density (319 mW cm-2), ultralong lifespan (5163 cycles at 25 mA cm-2), and outstanding rate performance (100 mA cm-2) for liquid ZABs, and superb temperature and deformation adaptability for flexible ZABs. Such improvement is attributed to the photothermal-heating-enabled synergy of promoted electrical conductivity, reactant-molecule motion, active area, and surface reconstruction, as revealed by operando Raman and simulation. The findings open vast possibilities toward more-energy-efficient energy applications.

Advances in Mn-Based MOFs and Their Derivatives for High-Performance Supercapacitor

As the most widely used metal material in supercapacitors, manganese (Mn)-based materials possess the merits of high theoretical capacitance, stable structure as well as environmental friendliness. However, due to poor conductivity and easy accumulation, the practical capacitance of Mn-based materials is far lower than that of theoretical value. Therefore, accurate structural adjustment and controllable strategies are urgently needed to optimize the electrochemical properties of Mn-based materials. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are porous materials with high specific surface area (SSA), tunable pore size, and controllable structure. These features make them attractive as precursors or scaffold for the synthesis of metal-based materials and composites, which are important for electrochemical energy storage applications. Therefore, a timely and comprehensive review on the classification, design, preparation and application of Mn-based MOFs and their derivatives for supercapacitors has been given in this paper. The recent advancement of Mn-based MOFs and their derivatives applied in supercapacitor electrodes are particularly highlighted. Finally, the challenges faced by Mn-MOFs and their derivatives for supercapacitors are summarized, and strategies to further improve their performance are proposed. The aspiration is that this review will serve as a beneficial compass, guiding the logical creation of Mn-based MOFs and their derivatives in the future.

Ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon Ti3C2Tx-TiN heterostructure derived from ZIF-8 nanoparticles sandwiched MXene for high-performance capacitive deionization

Rational design of high-performance electrode materials is crucial for enhancing desalination performance of capacitive deionization (CDI). Here, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon/Ti3C2Tx-TiN (NC/MX-TiN) heterostructure was developed by pyrolyzing zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) nanoparticles sandwiched MXene (ZSM), which were formed by assembling ultrafine ZIF-8 nanoparticles with size of 20 nm on both sides of MXene nanosheets. The introduction of ultrasmall ZIF-8 particles allowed for in situ nitridation of the MXene during pyrolysis, forming consecutive TiN layers tightly connected to the internal MXene. The two-dimensional (2D) heterostructure exhibited remarkable properties, including high specific surface area and excellent conductivity. Additionally, the resulting TiN demonstrated exceptional redox capability, which significantly enhanced the performance of CDI and ensured cycling stability. Benefiting from these advantages, the NC/MX-TiN exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 45.6 mg g-1 and a steady cycling performance in oxygenated saline water over 50 cycles. This work explores the rational design and construction of MXene-based 2D heterostructure and broadens new horizons for the development of novel CDI electrode materials.

Cobalt sulfide flower-like derived from metal organic frameworks on nickel foam as an electrode for fabrication of asymmetric supercapacitors

Metal-organic frameworks, as a kind of advanced nanoporous materials with metal centers and organic linkers, have been applied as promising electrode materials in energy storage devices. In this study, we are successfully prepared cobalt sulfide nanosheets (CoS) derived from the metal-organic framework on nickel foam (NF). The prepared electrodes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda and electrochemical methods like voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge curve and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The CoS/NF electrode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 377.5 mA h g-1 (1359 C g-1) at the current density of 2 A g-1, considerable rate performance and excellent durability (89.4% after 4000 cycles). A hybrid supercapacitor is assembled using CoS/NF as the positive electrode and activated carbon as the negative electrode, it shows a high energy density of 57.4 W h kg-1 at a power density of 405.2 W kg-1. The electrochemical results suggest that the CoS nanosheet arrays would possess excellent potential for applications in energy storage devices.

Ni, Co-Embedded MOF-Derived N-Doped Bimetallic Porous Carbon for Adsorption-Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes and Antibiotics

An efficient protocol for photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes and antibiotics has been successfully established via MOF-derived (MOF = metal-organic framework) Ni, Co-embedded N-doped bimetallic porous carbon nanocomposites (NiCo/NC). Such a NiCo/NC nanocomposite features well-distributed structures, suitable specific surface areas, and more active sites determined by various characterization analyses. The catalyst exhibits higher photocatalytic performance and stability toward the liquid-phase degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation for 60 min, after the adsorption-desorption equilibrium and the thorough degradation into H2O and CO2. Radical quenching experiments further confirmed the dominant effect of electron holes h+ and superoxide radical anions ·O2- for the MB photodegradation process. NiCo/NC was also appropriate for the degradation of Rhodamine B, methyl orange, tetracycline hydrochloride, and norfloxacin. Moreover, NiCo/NC is robust, and its photocatalytic activity is basically maintained after 8 cycles. This work is expected to provide additional information for the design of MOF-derived carbon material with more excellent properties and lay the foundation for further industrial applications.

Recent progress of MOF-functionalized nanocomposites: From structure to properties

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel crystalline porous materials assembled from metal ions and organic ligands. The adaptability of their design and the fine-tuning of the pore structures make them stand out in porous materials. Furthermore, by integrating MOF guest functional materials with other hosts, the novel composites have synergistic benefits in numerous fields such as batteries, supercapacitors, catalysis, gas storage and separation, sensors, and drug delivery. This article starts by examining the structural relationship between the host and guest materials, providing a comprehensive overview of the research advancements in various types of MOF-functionalized composites reported to date. The review focuses specifically on four types of spatial structures, including MOFs being (1) embedded in nanopores, (2) immobilized on surface, (3) coated as shells and (4) assembled into hybrids. In addition, specific design ideas for these four MOF-based composites are presented. Some of them involve in situ synthesis method, solvothermal method, etc. The specific properties and applications of these materials are also mentioned. Finally, a brief summary of the advantages of these four types of MOF composites is given. Hopefully, this article will help researchers in the design of MOF composite structures.

Facile synthesis of Co-Fe layered double hydroxide nanosheets wrapped on Ni-doped nanoporous carbon nanorods for oxygen evolution reaction

Owing to the high demand for clean and renewable energy technologies, several studies have focused on developing economically feasible, highly effective, and stable non-precious electrocatalysts for promoting the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This development has stimulated an expansion of investigative quests and indicated the importance of advancing electrocatalytic research in this field. Through a facile and efficient method, Ni nanoparticles were uniformly embedded into nanoporous carbon nanorods (Ni-NCN), which are subsequently electrodeposited on CoFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets to produce highly efficient Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH composites used for OER. The composite exhibited excellent catalytic activity toward OER owing to its low overpotential (ƞ10 mA = 280 mV), small Tafel slope (42 mV dec-1), and excellent durability. The Ni-NCN/CoFe-LDH catalyst exhibited higher OER activity owing to its uniformly dispersed Ni nanoparticles, large specific surface area, enhanced electron transport, and synergistic effect of multiple composites. Additionally, the enhanced synergistic effect of Ni-NCN promoted higher OER performance compared with Ni-undoped carbon nanorod/LDH, indicating that the Ni dopant and LDH significantly contributed to the overall OER performance. The synergistic effect of multiple composites significantly contributed to the excellent OER performance, indicating their potential as OER catalyst.

Terrace-Like 2D Hierarchically Porous Iron/Cobalt Metal-Organic Framework: Ambient Fast Synthesis and Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Application

It is urgent to design a low-cost electrocatalyst with high activity to enhance the efficiency of oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is limited by the slow four-electron transfer kinetics process. Nevertheless, traditional synthetic methods, including calcination and solvothermal, of the electrocatalysts are high-cost, low-yield, and energy-hogging, which limits their industrial application. Herein, an ambient fast synthetic method is developed to prepare terrace-like Fe/Co bimetal-organic framework (TFC-MOF) electrocatalyst materials in gram scale in 1 h. The method in this paper is designable based on coordination chemistry. Fe and Co ions can coordinate with the carboxyl groups on benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid (H3 BTC) to form a 2D-MOF structure. Structural characterizations, including SEM, TEM, and XRD are conducted to verify that the TFC-MOF is a terrace-like layered structure with uniform-sized mesoporous, which reduces the adsorption steric hindrance and facilitates the mass and electron transfer efficiency of OER. The TFC-MOF shows low overpotential, 255 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , and a low Tafel slope of 49.9 mV dec-1 , in an alkaline solution. This work provides a planar coordination strategy to synthesize 2D-MOF OER electrocatalyst on a large scale with low cost and low energy consumption, which will promote its practical OER applications.

Poly (Ionic Liquid)-Metal Organic Framework-Derived Nanoporous Carbon Membranes: Facile Fabrication and Ultrahigh Areal Capacitance

With the rapid development of energy storage technology, the operation of portable and wearable devices is inseparable from high energy density power supplies. However, the demand for high performance supercapacitors in movable smart electronics is still restrained by their insufficient areal capacitance and limited power/energy densities. In addition, some electroactive materials, including metal oxides, conductive polymers, graphene, porous carbons, etc., are inevitable to use extra adhesives for the preparation of electrode materials. In this work, integrated hierarchical graphitic porous carbon membranes used as the electrodes without adhesives are successfully synthesized, via pyrolyzing poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs)-metal organic frameworks (MOFs) composite membranes. The asymmetric supercapacitor is assembled by the carbonized PIL-MOF composite membrane and PILs-derived porous carbon membrane, and exhibits significant areal capacitance with remarkable power and energy densities. In the two-electrode system, the areal capacitance can reach 9.5 F cm-2 with an energy density of 1.91 mWh cm-2 . In the fabricated all-solid-state supercapacitors, the areal capacitance and energy density achieved 3.2 F cm-2 and 0.65 mWh cm-2 , respectively, exceeding most reported ones. Therefore, the integrated carbon membrane electrodes with high areal capacitance reveal great potential in miniaturized devices, and further show a wider application scope through regulating PILs.

A bimetallic Fe-Mg MOF with a dual role as an electrode in asymmetric supercapacitors and an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)

In this work, a novel bimetallic Fe-Mg/MOF was synthesized through a cost-effective and rapid hydrothermal process. The structure, morphology, and composition were examined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Further, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement showed a 324 m2 g-1 surface area for Fe-Mg/MOF. The Fe-Mg/MOF achieved 1825 C g-1 capacity at 1.2 A g-1 current density, which is higher than simple Fe-MOF (1144 C g-1) and Mg-MOF (1401 C g-1). To assess the long-term stability of the asymmetric device, the bimetallic MOF supercapattery underwent 1000 charge/discharge cycles and retained 85% of its initial capacity. The energy and power densities were calculated to be 57 W h kg-1 and 2393 W kg-1, respectively. Additionally, Fe-Mg/MOF showed superior electrocatalytic performance in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by demonstrating a smaller Tafel slope of 51.43 mV dec-1. Our research lays the foundation for enhancing the efficiency of energy storage technologies, paving the way for more sustainable and robust energy solutions.

Metal-organic framework derived inverse opal type 3D graphitic carbon for highly stable lithium-ion batteries

Graphitic carbon-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries have seen remarkable development and commercial acceptance during the past three decades. Still, the performance of these materials is limited due to the low surface area, stacking of layers, poor porosity, and meager conductivity. To overcome these limitations, we propose using polystyrene as a core and small-sized zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) particles as decorators to develop a highly porous three-dimensional graphitic carbon material. The developed material is optimized with the carbonization temperature for the best anodic performance of LIBs. The pyridinic nitrogen content in the material carbonized at 700 °C makes it high performing and more stable than the samples treated at 600, 800, and 900 °C. The packed coin cell exhibited an initial discharge capacity of 775 mA h g-1 at a current density of 50 mA g-1, which increases to 806 mA h g-1 after testing the material at different current densities for 55 cycles. The packed half-cell exhibited a highly stable performance of about 96% even after testing for 2000 cycles at 1 A g-1.

Principles of Design and Synthesis of Metal Derivatives from MOFs

Materials derived from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated exceptional structural variety and complexity and can be synthesized using low-cost scalable methods. Although the inherent instability and low electrical conductivity of MOFs are largely responsible for their low uptake for catalysis and energy storage, a superior alternative is MOF-derived metal-based derivatives (MDs) as these can retain the complex nanostructures of MOFs while exhibiting stability and electrical conductivities of several orders of magnitude higher. The present work comprehensively reviews MDs in terms of synthesis and their nanostructural design, including oxides, sulfides, phosphides, nitrides, carbides, transition metals, and other minor species. The focal point of the approach is the identification and rationalization of the design parameters that lead to the generation of optimal compositions, structures, nanostructures, and resultant performance parameters. The aim of this approach is to provide an inclusive platform for the strategies to design and process these materials for specific applications. This work is complemented by detailed figures that both summarize the design and processing approaches that have been reported and indicate potential trajectories for development. The work is also supported by comprehensive and up-to-date tabular coverage of the reported studies.

UiO-66 derived ZrO2@C catalysts for the double-bond isomerization reaction of 2-butene

1-Butene, as one of the widely used chemical raw materials, can be produced by the double bond isomerization of 2-butene. However, the current yield of the isomerization reaction is only up to 20% or so. It is therefore an urgent issue to develop novel catalysts with higher performances. In this work, a high-activity ZrO₂@C catalyst that is derived from UiO-66(Zr) is fabricated. The catalyst is prepared by calcining the precursor UiO-66(Zr) at high temperature in nitrogen, and characterized by XRD, TG, BET, SEM/TEM, XPS and NH₃-TPD. The results demonstrate that the calcination temperature has significant influences on the catalyst structure and performance. Regarding the catalyst ZrO₂@C-500, the selectivity and yield of 1-butene are 94.0% and 35.1%, respectively. The high performance is due to multiple aspects, including the inherited octahedral morphology from parent UiO-66(Zr), suitable medium-strong acidic active sites and high surface area. The present work will lead to a better understanding of the ZrO₂@C catalyst and guide the rational design of high-activity catalysts for the double bond isomerization of 2-butene to 1-butene.

Carbon nanotube-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid derived from nickel-based metal-organic framework for enhanced methyl blue adsorption

This work reports the incorporation of coordinated water into Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) which induces their structural transformation to Ni-BTC nanofibres (Ni-BTC-F). The carbonization of the Ni-BTC nanofibres at 600 °C results in the formation of carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated hierarchical porous nickel/carbon hybrid (labelled as Ni/C-600) with enlarged pores. In contrast, the Ni/C hybrid obtained from the carbonization of the original (unmodified) Ni-BTC nanorods (Ni-BTC-O) at 600 °C (labelled as Ni-BTC-O-600) exhibits smaller pore size and does not show the formation of CNTs. The Ni/C-600 hybrid derived from Ni-BTC-F shows a very high adsorption capacity of 686.8 mg g^-1 toward methyl blue (MB) dye. This is approximately 4.8 times higher than the adsorption capacity of Ni-BTC-O-600 (144.1 mg g^-1). The higher adsorption performance of Ni/C-600 relative to Ni-BTC-O-600 can be attributed to its larger pore volume, hierarchical porosity, and additional adsorption sites provided by the CNTs. In addition, the Ni/C-600 hybrid can maintain 90% of its adsorption capacity after 5 consecutive cycles, demonstrating its potential as an efficient and recyclable adsorbent for MB dye.

Road Map for In Situ Grown Binder-Free MOFs and Their Derivatives as Freestanding Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Among several electrocatalysts for energy storage purposes including supercapacitors, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and their derivatives have spurred wide spread interest owing to their structural merits, multifariousness with tailor-made functionalities and tunable pore sizes. The electrochemical performance of supercapacitors can be further enhanced using in situ grown MOFs and their derivatives, eliminating the role of insulating binders whose "dead mass" contribution hampers the device capability otherwise. The expulsion of binders not only ensures better adhesion of catalyst material with the current collector but also facilitates the transport of electron and electrolyte ions and remedy cycle performance deterioration with better chemical stability. This review systematically summarizes different kinds of metal-ligand combinations for in situ grown MOFs and derivatives, preparation techniques, modification strategies, properties, and charge transport mechanisms as freestanding electrode materials in determining the performance of supercapacitors. In the end, the review also highlights potential promises, challenges, and state-of-the-art advancement in the rational design of electrodes to overcome the bottlenecks and to improve the capability of MOFs in energy storage applications.

MOFs Containing Solid-State Electrolytes for Batteries

The use of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has been a very attractive research area that has received widespread attention in the modern world. SSEs can be divided into different types, some of which can be combined with MOFs to improve the electrochemical performance of the batteries by taking advantage of the high surface area and high porosity of MOFs. However, it also faces many serious problems and challenges. In this review, different types of SSEs are classified and the changes in these electrolytes after the addition of MOFs are described. Afterward, these SSEs with MOFs attached are introduced for different types of battery applications and the effects of these SSEs combined with MOFs on the electrochemical performance of the cells are described. Finally, some challenges faced by MOFs materials in batteries applications are presented, then some solutions to the problems and development expectations of MOFs are given.

Electron-ion conjugation sites co-constructed by defects and heteroatoms assisted carbon electrodes for high-performance aqueous energy storage

Rapid preparation strategies of carbon-based materials with a high power density and energy density are crucial for the large-scale application of carbon materials in energy storage. However, achieving these goals quickly and efficiently remains challenging. Herein, the rapid redox reaction of concentrated H₂SO₄ and sucrose was employed as a means to destroy the perfect carbon lattice to form defects and insert large numbers of heteroatoms into the defects to rapidly form electron-ion conjugated sites of carbon materials at room temperature. Among prepared samples, CS-800-2 showed an excellent electrochemical performance (377.7 F g^-1, 1 A g^-1) and high energy density in 1 M H₂SO₄ electrolyte owing to its large specific surface area and a significant number of electron-ion conjugated sites. Additionally, CS-800-2 exhibited desirable energy storage performance in other aqueous electrolytes containing various metal ions. The theoretical calculation results revealed increased charge density near the carbon lattice defects, and the presence of heteroatoms effectively reduced the adsorption energy of carbon materials toward cations. Accordingly, the constructed "electron-ion" conjugated sites comprising defects and heteroatoms on the super-large surface of carbon-based materials accelerated the pseudo-capacitance reactions on the material surface, thereby greatly enhancing the energy density of carbon-based materials without sacrificing power density. In sum, a fresh theoretical perspective for constructing new carbon-based energy storage materials was provided, promising for future development of high-performance energy storage materials and devices.

A hybridized nano-porous carbon reinforced 3D graphene-based epidermal patch for precise sweat glucose and lactate analysis

Wearable electrochemical biosensors for perspiration analysis offer a promising non-invasive biomarker monitoring method. Herein, a functionalized hybridized nanoporous carbon (H-NPC)-encapsulated flexible 3D porous graphene-based epidermal patch was firstly fabricated for monitoring sweat glucose, lactate, pH, and temperature using simple, cost-effective, laser-engraved, and spray-coating techniques. The fabricated H-NPC-modified electrode significantly increased electrochemical surface area and electrocatalytic activity. Within the physiological sweat range (0-1.5 mM), the second-generation glucose sensor exhibited an excellent sensitivity of 82.7 μAmM-1cm-2 with 0.025 μM LOD. Moreover, the lactate biosensor exhibited an extraordinary linear range (0-56 mM) response owing to the incorporation of an outer diffusion limiting layer (DLL) that controls the lactate flux reaching the enzyme with comparable sensitivity (204 nAmM-1cm-2) and LOD (4 μM). Finally, we employed an analytical correction approach incorporating pH and temperature adjustments during on-body tests. In addition to connecting various carbon-based materials to limitless metal-organic frameworks as a transduction material, our research also paves the way for enabling these sensors to operate on pH and T correction independently while delivering accurate results.

Composites Filled with Metal Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives: Recent Developments in Flame Retardants

Polymer matrix is vulnerable to fire hazards and needs to add flame retardants to enhance its performance and make its application scenarios more extensive. At this stage, it is more necessary to add multiple flame-retardant elements and build a multi-component synergistic system. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for nearly three decades since their introduction. MOFs are known for their structural advantages but have only been applied to flame-retardant polymers for a relatively short period of time. In this paper, we review the development of MOFs utilized as flame retardants and analyze the flame-retardant mechanisms in the gas phase and condensed phase from the original MOF materials, modified MOF composites, and MOF-derived composites as flame retardants, respectively. The effects of carbon-based materials, phosphorus-based materials, nitrogen-based materials, and biomass on the flame-retardant properties of polymers are discussed in the context of MOFs. The construction of MOF multi-structured flame retardants is also introduced, and a variety of MOF-based flame retardants with different morphologies are shown to broaden the ideas for subsequent research.

Superstructures of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks to Single- and Multiatom Sites for Electrochemical Energy Conversion

The exploration of electrocatalysts with high catalytic activity and long-term stability for electrochemical energy conversion is significant yet remains challenging. Zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived superstructures are a source of atomic-site-containing electrocatalysts. These atomic sites anchor the guest encapsulation and self-assembly of aspheric polyhedral particles produced using microreactor fabrication. This review provides an overview of ZIF-derived superstructures by highlighting some of the key structural types, such as open carbon cages, 1D superstructures, hollow structures, and the interconversion of superstructures. The fundamentals and representative structures are outlined to demonstrate the role of superstructures in the construction of materials with atomic sites, such as single- and dual-atom materials. Then, the roles of ZIF-derived single-atom sites for the electroreduction of CO₂ and electrochemical synthesis of H₂ O₂ are discussed, and their electrochemical performance for energy conversion is outlined. Finally, the perspective on advancing single- and dual-atom electrode-based electrochemical processes with enhanced redox activity and a low-impedance charge-transfer pathway for cathodes is provided. The challenges associated with ZIF-derived superstructures for electrochemical energy conversion are discussed.

MOF-derived nanoporous carbons with diverse tunable nanoarchitectures

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), or porous coordination polymers, are crystalline porous materials formed by coordination bonding between inorganic and organic species on the basis of the self-assembly of the reacting units. The typical characteristics of MOFs, including their large specific surface areas, ultrahigh porosities and excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, as well as their great potential for chemical and structural modifications, make them excellent candidates for versatile applications. Their poor electrical conductivity, however, has meant that they have not been useful for electrochemical applications. Fortuitously, the direct carbonization of MOFs results in a rearrangement of the carbon atoms of the organic units into a network of carbon atoms, which means that the products have useful levels of conductivity. The direct carbonization of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-type MOFs, particularly ZIF-8, has successfully widened the scope of possible applications of MOFs to include electrochemical reactions that could be used in, for example, energy storage, energy conversion, electrochemical biosensors and capacitive deionization of saline water. Here, we present the first detailed protocols for synthesizing high-quality ZIF-8 and its modified forms of hollow ZIF-8, core-shell ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and ZIF-8@mesostuctured polydopamine. Typically, ZIF-8 synthesis takes 27 h to complete, and subsequent nanoarchitecturing procedures leading to hollow ZIF-8, ZIF-8@ZIF-67 and ZIF-8@mPDA take 6, 14 and 30 h, respectively. The direct-carbonization procedure takes 12 h. The resulting nanoporous carbons are suitable for electrochemical applications, in particular as materials for supercapacitors.

A Review on the Application of Cobalt-Based Nanomaterials in Supercapacitors

Among many electrode materials, cobalt-based nanomaterials are widely used in supercapacitors because of their high natural abundance, good electrical conductivity, and high specific capacitance. However, there are still some difficulties to overcome, including poor structural stability and low power density. This paper summarizes the research progress of cobalt-based nanomaterials (cobalt oxide, cobalt hydroxide, cobalt-containing ternary metal oxides, etc.) as electrode materials for supercapacitors in recent years and discusses the preparation methods and properties of the materials. Notably, the focus of this paper is on the strategies to improve the electrochemical properties of these materials. We show that the performance of cobalt-based nanomaterials can be improved by designing their morphologies and, among the many morphologies, the mesoporous structure plays a major role. This is because mesoporous structures can mitigate volume changes and improve the performance of pseudo capacitance. This review is dedicated to the study of several cobalt-based nanomaterials in supercapacitors, and we hope that future scholars will make new breakthroughs in morphology design.

Metal-organic frameworks and their derivatives for metal-ion (Li, Na, K and Zn) hybrid capacitors

Metal-ion hybrid capacitors (MIHCs) hold particular promise for next-generation energy storage technologies, which bridge the gap between the high energy density of conventional batteries and the high power density and long lifespan of supercapacitors (SCs). However, the achieved electrochemical performance of available MIHCs is still far from practical requirements. This is primarily attributed to the mismatch in capacity and reaction kinetics between the cathode and anode. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives offer great opportunities for high-performance MIHCs due to their high specific surface area, high porosity, topological diversity, and designable functional sites. In this review, instead of simply enumerating, we critically summarize the recent progress of MOFs and their derivatives in MIHCs (Li, Na, K, and Zn), while emphasizing the relationship between the structure/composition and electrochemical performance. In addition, existing issues and some representative design strategies are highlighted to inspire breaking through existing limitations. Finally, a brief conclusion and outlook are presented, along with current challenges and future opportunities for MOFs and their derivatives in MIHCs.

Strategic design of Fe and N co-doped hierarchically porous carbon as superior ORR catalyst: from the perspective of nanoarchitectonics

In this study, we present microporous carbon (MPC), hollow microporous carbon (HMC) and hierarchically porous carbon (HPC) to demonstrate the importance of strategical designing of nanoarchitectures in achieving advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials, especially in the context of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and ORR studies, we identify a marked structural effect depending on the porosity. Specifically, mesopores are found to have the most profound influence by significantly improving electrochemical wettability and accessibility. We also identify that macropore contributes to the rate capability of the porous carbons. The results of the rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) method also demonstrate the advantages of strategically designed double-shelled nanoarchitecture of HPC to increase the overall electron transfer number (n) closer to four by offering a higher chance of the double two-electron pathways. Next, selective doping of highly active Fe-N x sites on HPC is obtained by increasing the nitrogen content in HPC. As a result, the optimized Fe and N co-doped HPC demonstrate high ORR catalytic activity comparable to the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in alkaline electrolyte. Our findings, therefore, strongly advocate the importance of a strategic design of advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials, especially in light of both structural and doping effects, from the perspective of nanoarchitectonics.

Metal-organic framework (MOF) composites as promising materials for energy storage applications

Metal-organic framework (MOF) composites are considered to be one of the most vital energy storage materials due to their advantages of high porousness, multifunction, various structures and controllable chemical compositions, which provide a great possibility to find suitable electrode materials for batteries and supercapacitors. However, MOF composites are still in the face of various challenges and difficulties that hinder their practical application. In this review, we introduce and summarize the applications of MOF composites in batteries, covering metal-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-oxygen batteries and zinc-air batteries, as well as supercapacitors. In addition, the application challenges of MOF composites in batteries and supercapacitors are also summarized. Finally, the basic ideas and directions for further development of these two types of electrochemical energy storage devices are proposed.

Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets: Synthesis and Applications in Electrocatalysis and Photocatalysis

Two-dimensional metal-organic nanosheets (2D MONs) are an emerging class of ultrathin, porous, and crystalline materials. The organic/inorganic hybrid nature offers MONs distinct advantages over other inorganic nanosheets in terms of diversity of organic ligands and metal notes. Compared to bulk three-dimensional metal-organic frameworks, 2D MONs possess merits of high density and readily accessible catalytic sites, reduced diffusion pathways for reactants/products, and fast electron transport. These features endow MONs with enhanced physical/chemical properties and are ideal for heterogeneous catalysis. In this Review, state-of-the-art synthetic methods for the fabrication of 2D MONs were summarized. The advances of 2D MONs-based materials for electrocatalysis and photocatalysis, including hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO₂ RR), and electro-/photocatalytic organic transformations were systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and perspectives regarding future design and synthesis of 2D MONs for high-performance electrocatalysis and photocatalysis were provided.

Porous carbon architectures with different dimensionalities for lithium metal storage

Lithium metal batteries have recently gained tremendous attention owing to their high energy capacity compared to other rechargeable batteries. Nevertheless, lithium (Li) dendritic growth causes low Coulombic efficiency, thermal runaway, and safety issues, all of which hinder the practical application of Li metal as an anodic material. In this review, the failure mechanisms of Li metal anode are described according to its infinite volume changes, unstable solid electrolyte interphase, and Li dendritic growth. The fundamental models that describe the Li deposition and dendritic growth, such as the thermodynamic, electrodeposition kinetics, and internal stress models are summarized. From these considerations, porous carbon-based frameworks have emerged as a promising strategy to resolve these issues. Thus, the main principles of utilizing these materials as a Li metal host are discussed. Finally, we also focus on the recent progress on utilizing one-, two-, and three-dimensional carbon-based frameworks and their composites to highlight the future outlook of these materials.

Copper Azide Nanoparticle-Encapsulating MOF-Derived Porous Carbon: Electrochemical Preparation for High-Performance Primary Explosive Film

It is highly desired but still remains challenging to design a primary explosive-based nanoparticle-encapsulated conductive skeleton for the development of powerful yet safe energetic films employed in miniaturized explosive systems. Herein, a proof-of-concept electrochemical preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived porous carbon embedding copper-based azide (Cu(N₃ )₂ or CuN₃ , CA) nanoparticles on copper substrate is described. A Cu-based MOF, i.e., Cu-BTC is fabricated based on anodized Cu(OH)₂ nanorods, as a template, to achieve CA/C film through pyrolysis and electrochemical azidation. Such a CA/C film, which is woven by numerous ultrafine nanofibers, favorably demonstrates excellent energy release (945-2090 J g^-1 ), tunable electrostatic sensitivity (0.22-1.39 mJ), and considerable initiation ability. The performance is superior to most reported primary explosives, since the CA nanoparticles contribute to high brisance and the protection of the porous carbon network. Notably, the growth mechanism of the CA/C film is further disclosed by detailed experimental investigation and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. This work will offer new insight to design and develop a CA-based primary explosive film for applications in advanced explosive systems.

Interfacial nanoarchitectonics for ZIF-8 membranes with enhanced gas separation

Metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are potentially useful in gas separation applications. Conventional methods of MOF membrane preparation require multiple steps and high-pressure conditions. In this study, a reliable one-step interfacial synthesis method under atmospheric pressure has been developed to prepare zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) membranes supported on porous α-Al2O3 disks. To obtain optimal ZIF-8 membranes, three reaction parameters were investigated, namely, reaction temperature, reaction time, and concentration of the organic linker (i.e., 2-methylimidazole). The growth of ZIF-8 membranes under various parameters was evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and the optimal synthesis conditions were determined (i.e., 80 °C for 12 h in 50 mM of 2-methylimidazole). The as-synthesized ZIF-8 membranes were then applied to CO2/N2 gas separation, which exhibited a maximum separation factor of 5.49 and CO2 gas permeance of 0.47 × 10-7 mol·m-2·s-1·Pa-1.

Structural control of a novel hierarchical porous carbon material and its adsorption properties

Novel hierarchical porous carbon materials (HPCs) were fabricated via a reactive template-induced in situ hypercrosslinking procedure. The effects of carbonization conditions on the microstructure and morphology of HPCs were investigated, and the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) on HPCs was explored. The as-prepared HPCs has a hierarchical micro-, meso- and macropore structure, which results from the overlap of hollow nanospheres possessing microporous shells and macroporous cavities. The carbonization temperature, carbonization time and carbonization heating rate played important roles in tailoring the nanostructures of HPCs. The BET specific surface area and micropore specific surface area can reach 2388 m² g^-1 and 1892 m² g^-1, respectively. Benefitting from the well-developed pore structure, the MB removal efficiency can exceed 99% under optimized conditions. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics can be well described by a pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir model, respectively. Furthermore, such adsorption was characterized by a spontaneous endothermic process.

Boosting capacitive performance of manganese oxide nanorods by decorating with three-dimensional crushed graphene

This work reports the rational design of MnOx nanorods on 3D crushed reduced graphene oxide (MnOx/C-rGO) by chemical reduction of Ni-incorporated graphene oxide (GO) followed by chemical etching to remove Ni. The resulting MnOx/C-rGO composite synergistically integrates the electronic properties and geometry structure of MnOx and 3D C-rGO. As a result, MnOx/C-rGO shows a significantly higher specific capacitance (Csp) of 863 F g-1 than MnOx/2D graphene sheets (MnOx/S-rGO) (373 F g-1) and MnOx (200 F g-1) at a current density of 0.2 A g-1. Furthermore, when assembled into symmetric supercapacitors, the MnOx/C-rGO-based device delivers a higher Csp (288 F g-1) than MnOx/S-rGO-based device (75 F g-1) at a current density of 0.3 A g-1. The superior capacitive performance of the MnOx/C-rGO-based symmetric device is attributed to the enlarged accessible surface, reduced lamellar stacking of graphene, and improved ionic transport provided by the 3D architecture of MnOx/C-rGO. In addition, the MnOx/C-rGO-based device exhibits an energy density of 23 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 113 Wkg-1, and long-term cycling stability, demonstrating its promising potential for practical application.
