Electron Spin Selective Iridium Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Highly efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis are crucial to the widespread commercialization of the technology and an important step forward toward a sustainable energy future. In this study, an alternative method for boosting the electrocatalytic activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of a well-known electrocatalyst (iridium) is presented. Iridium nanoparticles (2.1 ± 0.2 nm in diameter) functionalized with chiral molecules were found to markedly enhance the activity of the OER when compared to unfunctionalized and achiral functionalized iridium nanoparticles. At a potential of 1.55 V vs Reference Hydrogen Electrode (RHE), chiral functionalized iridium nanoparticles exhibited an average 85% enhancement in activity with respect to unfunctionalized iridium nanoparticles compared to an average 13% enhancement for the achiral functionalized iridium nanoparticle. This activity enhancement is attributed to a spin-selective electron transfer mechanism taking place on the chiral functionalized catalysts, a characteristic induced by the chirality of the ligand. This alternative path for the OER drastically reduces the production of hydrogen peroxide, which was confirmed via a colorimetric method.

Bacterial memory in antibiotic resistance evolution and nanotechnology in evolutionary biology

Bacterial memory refers to the phenomenon in which past experiences influence current behaviors in response to changing environments. It serves as a crucial process that enables adaptation and evolution. We first summarize the state-of-art approaches regarding history-dependent behaviors that impact growth dynamics and underlying mechanisms. Then, the phenotypic and genotypic origins of memory and how encoded memory modulates drug tolerance/resistance are reviewed. We also provide a summary of possible memory effects induced by antimicrobial nanoparticles. The regulatory networks and genetic underpinnings responsible for memory building partially overlap with nanoparticle and drug exposures, which may raise concerns about the impact of nanotechnology on adaptation. Finally, we provide a perspective on the use of nanotechnology to harness bacterial memory based on its unique mode of actions on information processing and transmission in bacteria. Exploring bacterial memory mechanisms provides valuable insights into acclimation, evolution, and the potential applications of nanotechnology in harnessing memory.

Chiral-induced spin selectivity in biomolecules, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and inorganic materials: a comprehensive review on recent progress

The two spin states of electrons are degenerate in nonmagnetic materials. The chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect provides a new strategy for manipulating electron's spin and a deeper understanding of spin selective processes in organisms. Here, we summarize the important discoveries and recent experiments performed during the development of the CISS effect, analyze the spin polarized transport in various types of materials and discuss the mechanisms, theoretical calculations, experimental techniques and biological significance of the CISS effect. The first part of this review concisely presents a general overview of the discoveries and importance of the CISS effect, laws and underlying mechanisms of which are discussed in the next section, where several classical experimental methods for detecting the CISS effect are also introduced. Based on the organic and inorganic properties of materials, the CISS effect of organic biomolecules, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and inorganic materials are reviewed in the third, fourth and fifth sections, especially the chiral transfer mechanism of hybrid materials and the relationship between the CISS effect and life science. In addition, conclusions and prospective future of the CISS effect are outlined at the end, where the development and applications of the CISS effect in spintronics are directly described, which is helpful for designing promising chiral spintronic devices and understanding the natural status of chirality from a new perspective.

A Chirality-Based Quantum Leap

There is increasing interest in the study of chiral degrees of freedom occurring in matter and in electromagnetic fields. Opportunities in quantum sciences will likely exploit two main areas that are the focus of this Review: (1) recent observations of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect in chiral molecules and engineered nanomaterials and (2) rapidly evolving nanophotonic strategies designed to amplify chiral light-matter interactions. On the one hand, the CISS effect underpins the observation that charge transport through nanoscopic chiral structures favors a particular electronic spin orientation, resulting in large room-temperature spin polarizations. Observations of the CISS effect suggest opportunities for spin control and for the design and fabrication of room-temperature quantum devices from the bottom up, with atomic-scale precision and molecular modularity. On the other hand, chiral-optical effects that depend on both spin- and orbital-angular momentum of photons could offer key advantages in all-optical and quantum information technologies. In particular, amplification of these chiral light-matter interactions using rationally designed plasmonic and dielectric nanomaterials provide approaches to manipulate light intensity, polarization, and phase in confined nanoscale geometries. Any technology that relies on optimal charge transport, or optical control and readout, including quantum devices for logic, sensing, and storage, may benefit from chiral quantum properties. These properties can be theoretically and experimentally investigated from a quantum information perspective, which has not yet been fully developed. There are uncharted implications for the quantum sciences once chiral couplings can be engineered to control the storage, transduction, and manipulation of quantum information. This forward-looking Review provides a survey of the experimental and theoretical fundamentals of chiral-influenced quantum effects and presents a vision for their possible future roles in enabling room-temperature quantum technologies.

Modulating the Conduction Band Energies of Si Electrode Interfaces Functionalized with Monolayers of a Bay-Substituted Perylene Bisimide

The confinement of π-conjugated chromophores on silicon (Si) electrode surfaces is a powerful approach to engineer electroresponsive monolayers relevant to microelectronics, electrocatalysis, and information storage and processing. While common strategies to functionalize Si interfaces exploit molecularly dissolved building blocks, only a handful number of studies have leveraged the structure-function relationships of π-aggregates to tune the electronic structures of hybrid monolayers at Si interfaces. Herein, we show that the semiconducting properties of n-type monolayers constructed on Si electrodes are intimately correlated to the initial aggregation state of π-conjugated chromophore precursors derived from bay-substituted perylene bisimide (PBI) units. Specifically, our study unravels that for n-type monolayers engineered using PBI π-aggregates, the cathodic reduction potentials required to inject negative charge carriers into the conduction bands can be stabilized by 295 mV through reversible switching of the maximum anodic potential (MAP) that is applied during the oxidative cycles (+0.5 or +1.5 V vs Ag/AgCl). This redox-assisted stabilization effect is not observed with n-type monolayers derived from molecularly dissolved PBI cores and monolayers featuring a low surface density of the redox-active probes. These findings unequivocally point to the crucial role played by PBI π-aggregates in modulating the conduction band energies of n-type monolayers where a high MAP of +1.5 V enables the formation of electronic trap states that facilitate electron injection when sweeping back to cathodic potentials. Because the structure-function relationships of PBI π-aggregates are shown to modulate the semiconducting properties of hybrid n-type monolayers constructed at Si interfaces, our results hold promising opportunities to develop redox-switchable monolayers for engineering nonvolatile electronic memory devices.

Self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures

Controlled assembly of inorganic nanoparticles with different compositions, sizes and shapes into higher-order structures of collective functionalities is a central pursued objective in chemistry, physics, materials science and nanotechnology. The emerging chiral superstructures, which break spatial symmetries at the nanoscale, have attracted particular attention, owing to their unique chiroptical properties and potential applications in optics, catalysis, biology and so on. Various bottom-up strategies have been developed to build inorganic chiral superstructures based on the intrinsic configurational preference of the building blocks, external fields or chiral templates. Self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures have demonstrated significant superior optical activity from the strong electric/magnetic coupling between the building blocks, as compared with the organic counterparts. In this Review, we discuss recent progress in preparing self-assembled inorganic chiral superstructures, with an emphasis on the driving forces that enable symmetry breaking during the assembly process. The chiroptical properties and applications are highlighted and a forward-looking trajectory of where research efforts should be focused is discussed.

Optically Controlled Electron Transfer in a ReI Complex

Ultrafast optical control of intramolecular charge flow was demonstrated, which paves the way for photocurrent modulation and switching with a highly wavelength-selective ON/OFF ratio. The system that was explored is a fac-[Re(CO)₃ (TTF-DPPZ)Cl] complex, where TTF-DPPZ=4',5'-bis(propylthio)tetrathiafulvenyl[i]dipyrido[3,2-a:2',3'-c]phenazine. DFT calculations and AC-Stark spectroscopy confirmed the presence of two distinct optically active charge-transfer processes, namely a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) and an intra-ligand charge transfer (ILCT). Ultrafast transient absorption measurements showed that the ILCT state decays in the ps regime. Upon excitation to the MLCT state, only a long-lived ³ MLCT state was observed after 80 ps. Remarkably, however, the bleaching of the ILCT absorption band remained as a result of the effective inhibition of the HOMO-LUMO transition.

Leveraging the Assembly of a Rylene Dye to Tune the Semiconducting Properties of Functionalized n-Type, Hybrid Si Interfaces

The functionalization of silicon electrodes with π-conjugated chromophores opens new avenues to engineer hybrid semiconducting interfaces relevant to information storage and processing. Notably, molecularly dissolved π-conjugated units, such as ferrocene derivatives, are traditionally exploited as building blocks to construct well-defined interfaces that establish electrochemically addressable platforms with which to investigate electron transfer properties and charge storage capabilities. In contrast, planar π-conjugated building blocks such as naphthalene diimide (NDI) cores enable the formation of solvated aggregates equipped with emergent electronic structures not manifested by the parent, molecularly dissolved building blocks. To interrogate the extent to which the aggregated states of π-conjugated chromophores can be leveraged to regulate the n-type semiconducting properties of functionalized electrodes, we have devised an amphiphilic rylene core (NDI) that demonstrates a non-negligible degree of aggregation in an aqueous medium. Characterization of the electronic structures of the NDI-derived aggregates using a combination of electrochemistry, reductive titration experiments, and spectroelectrochemistry unveils the existence of π-anion stacks, the formation of which is contingent on the initial concentration of NDI building blocks. We show that grafting n-doped NDI aggregates on silicon electrode precursors equipped with a high density of anchoring groups by means of "click" reaction enables the formation of the hybrid Si-NDI electrode (Si-NDI-15@1) that facilitates electron injection by more than 400 mV when compared to Si interfaces constructed from molecularly dissolved NDI units. Furthermore, the engineering of a Si precursor surface characterized by a low density of anchoring groups provides additional proof to highlight that the potentiometric properties recorded for Si-NDI-15@1 originate from NDI units, evidencing a non-negligible degree of aggregation. The present work delivers tools to manipulate the potentiometric properties of functionalized electrodes by leveraging on the electronic structures of aggregated, π-conjugated precursors.

Bell-Shaped Electron Transfer Kinetics in Gold Nanoclusters

Although metal nanoclusters (MNCs) have shown great promise for the further development of photochemical techniques to be applied in diverse areas (e.g., photoelectronic devices, photochemical sensors, photocatalysts, and energy storage and conversion systems), the fundamental problem of their electron transfer behavior still remains unsolved. Herein, a driving force-dependent photoinduced electron transfer process of gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) is clarified for the first time from a rational-designed opposite-charged system. It was found that the electron transfer dynamic of carboxylated chitosan and dithiothreitol-commodified AuNCs (CC/DTT-AuNCs) can be satisfactorily described by the Marcus electron transfer theory. This proved model was applied to estimate the ultrafast charge separation process between CC/DTT-AuNCs and mitoxantrone, which was confirmed by fluorescence quenching and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy measurements. We envision that this work will open a new door for understanding the electron transfer behavior of MNCs and facilitate the design of advanced optoelectronic devices.

Universal free-energy landscape produces efficient and reversible electron bifurcation

For decades, it was unknown how electron-bifurcating systems in nature prevented energy-wasting short-circuiting reactions that have large driving forces, so synthetic electron-bifurcating molecular machines could not be designed and built. The underpinning free-energy landscapes for electron bifurcation were also enigmatic. We predict that a simple and universal free-energy landscape enables electron bifurcation, and we show that it enables high-efficiency bifurcation with limited short-circuiting (the EB scheme). The landscape relies on steep free-energy slopes in the two redox branches to insulate against short-circuiting using an electron occupancy blockade effect, without relying on nuanced changes in the microscopic rate constants for the short-circuiting reactions. The EB scheme thus unifies a body of observations on biological catalysis and energy conversion, and the scheme provides a blueprint to guide future campaigns to establish synthetic electron bifurcation machines.

Controlling Charge Transfer from Quantum Dots to Polyelectrolyte Layers Extends Prospective Applications of Magneto-Optical Microcapsules

The layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition approach allows combined incorporation of fluorescent, magnetic, and plasmonic nanoparticles into the shell of polyelectrolyte microcapsules to obtain stimulus-responsive systems whose imaging and drug release functions can be triggered by external stimuli. The combined use of fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) yields magnetic-field-driven imaging tools that can be tracked and imaged even deep in tissue when the appropriate type of QDs and wavelength of their excitation are used. QDs are excellent photonic labels for microcapsule encoding due to their close-to-unity photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields, narrow PL emission bands, and tremendous one- and two-photon extinction coefficients. However, the presence of MNPs and electrically charged polyelectrolyte molecules used for the LbL fabrication of magneto-optical microcapsules provokes alterations of the QD optical properties because of the photoinduced charge and energy transfer resulting in QD photodarkening or photobrightening. These lead to variation of the microcapsule PL signal under illumination, which hampers their tracking and quantitative analysis in cells and tissues. Here, we have studied the effects of the structure and spatial arrangement of the nanoparticles within the microcapsule polyelectrolyte shell, the total shell thickness, and the shell surface charge on their PL properties under continuous illumination. The roles of the charge transfer and its main driving forces in the stability of the microcapsules PL signal have been established, and the design of the microcapsules dually encoded with QDs and MNPs providing the strongest and most stable PL has been determined. Controlling the energy transfer from the QDs and MNPs and the charge transfer from QDs to polyelectrolyte layers in the engineering of magneto-optical microcapsules with a bright and stable PL signal extends their applications to long-lasting quantitative fluorescence imaging.

Nanoparticle-Mediated Visualization and Control of Cellular Membrane Potential: Strategies, Progress, and Remaining Issues

The interfacing of nanoparticle (NP) materials with cells, tissues, and organisms for a range of applications including imaging, sensing, and drug delivery continues at a rampant pace. An emerging theme in this area is the use of NPs and nanostructured surfaces for the imaging and/or control of cellular membrane potential (MP). Given the important role that MP plays in cellular biology, both in normal physiology and in disease, new materials and methods are continually being developed to probe the activity of electrically excitable cells such as neurons and muscle cells. In this Review, we highlight the current state of the art for both the visualization and control of MP using traditional materials and techniques, discuss the advantageous features of NPs for performing these functions, and present recent examples from the literature of how NP materials have been implemented for the visualization and control of the activity of electrically excitable cells. We conclude with a forward-looking perspective of how we expect to see this field progress in the near term and further into the future.

Effect of Chiral Molecules on the Electron's Spin Wavefunction at Interfaces

Kelvin-probe measurements on ferromagnetic thin film electrodes coated with self-assembled monolayers of chiral molecules reveal that the electron penetration from the metal electrode into the chiral molecules depends on the ferromagnet's magnetization direction and the molecules' chirality. Electrostatic potential differences as large as 100 mV are observed. These changes arise from the applied oscillating electric field, which drives spin-dependent charge penetration from the ferromagnetic substrate to the chiral molecules. The enantiospecificity of the response is studied as a function of the magnetization strength, the magnetization direction, and the handedness and length of the chiral molecules. These new phenomena are rationalized in terms of the chiral-induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, in which one spin orientation of electrons from the ferromagnet penetrates more easily into a chiral molecule than does the other orientation. The large potential changes (>kT at room temperature) manifested here imply that this phenomenon is important for spin transport in chiral spintronic devices and for magneto-electrochemistry of chiral molecules.

Nanoscale Photoinduced Charge Transfer with Individual Quantum Dots: Tunability through Synthesis, Interface Design, and Interaction with Charge Traps

Semiconducting colloidal quantum dots (QDs) provide an excellent platform for nanoscale charge-transfer studies. Because of their size-dependent optoelectronic properties, which can be tuned via chemical synthesis and of their versatility in surface ligand exchange, QDs can be coupled with various types of acceptors to create hybrids with controlled type (electron or hole), direction, and rate of charge flow, depending on the foreseen application, either solar harvesting, light emitting, or biosensing. This perspective highlights several examples of QD-based hybrids with controllable (tunable) rate of charge transfer obtained by various approaches, including by changing the QD core size and shell thickness by colloidal synthesis, by the insertion of molecular linkers or dielectric spacers between donor and acceptor components. We also show that subjecting QDs to external factors such as electric fields and alternate optical excitation energy is another approach to bias the internal charge transfer between charges photogenerated in the QD core and QD's surface charge traps. The perspective also provides the reader with various examples of how single nanoparticle spectroscopic studies can help in understanding and quantifying nanoscale charge transfer with QDs.
