Supramolecular Oligourethane Gel with Multicolor Luminescence Controlled by Mechanically Sensitive Hydrogen-Bonding

Remarkable Off-On Tunable Solid-State Luminescence by the Regulation of Pyrene Dimer

It is always a challenge to achieve "off-on" luminescent switch by regulating non-covalent interactions. Herein, we report a unique strategy for constructing high performance "off-on" tunable luminescent materials utilizing a novel molecule (TFPA) consist of pyrene and cyanostilbene. The pristine crystal of TFPA is almost non-emissive. Upon grinding/UV irradiation, an obvious luminescence enhancement is observed. Theoretical and experimental results revealed the underlying mechanism of this intriguing "off-on" switching behavior. The non-emissive crystal consists of ordered H-aggregates, with adjacent two molecules stacked in an anti-parallel manner and no overlapped area in pyrene moieties. When external force is applied by grinding or internal force is introduced through the photoisomerization, the dimer structures are facilitated with shorter intermolecular distances and better overlapping of pyrene moieties. In addition, the "on" state can recover to "off" state under thermal annealing, showing good reversibility and applicability in intelligence material. The present results promote an in-depth insight between packing structure and photophysical property, and offer an effective strategy for the construction of luminescence "off-on" switching materials, toward the development of stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for anti-counterfeiting.

Multicolor Luminescence of a Polyurethane Derivative Driven by Heat/Light-Induced Aggregation

The study of aggregate formation and its controllable effect on luminescence behavior has a far-reaching influence in establishing a universal aggregation photophysical mechanism. In this paper, we obtained clusters with different extents of aggregation by heat-induced or light-triggered aggregation of a new polyurethane derivative (PUE). The controllable regulation of multicolor fluorescence of a single (nondoped) polymeric material is realized. The luminescence behavior of PUE varies with microscopic control of the aggregation structure. Compared with the powder state, the enhanced atom-atom and group-group interactions of PUE-gel effectively limit the nonradiative transitions in the excited state and result in a red-shift in emission. This work avoids complex organic synthesis and demonstrates a simple strategy to induce aggregation and regulate the emitting color of macromolecules, providing a template for developing new materials for multicolor fluorescence. In addition, a pattern was constructed with encryption, anticounterfeiting, and information transmission functions which provide a proof-of-concept demonstration of the practical potential of PUE as a smart material.

Influence of the Crystal Structure of Melamine Trimetaphosphate 2D Supramolecules on the Properties of Polyamide 6

To explore the influence of the crystal structure difference of melamine trimetaphosphate (MAP) on the application performance of its polymer composites, an intumescent flame retardant with the optimal crystal type was designed and synthesized to improve the mechanical properties and flame retardancy of polyamide 6 (PA6). I-MAP and II-MAP were obtained using different concentrations of MA and sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) in an acidic aqueous solution. The morphology, chemical composition, and thermal stability were comprehensively characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion, mechanical properties, and flame retardancy of PA6/I-MAP and PA6/II-MAP were evaluated by SEM, stress and strain, limiting oxygen index test (LOI), vertical burning test (UL-94), cone calorimetry (CONE) test, and char residue analysis. The conclusion is as follows: I-MAP and II-MAP have a greater influence on the physical properties of PA6 but less influence on the chemical properties. Compared with PA6/I-MAP, the tensile strength of PA6/II-MAP is 104.7% higher, the flame rating reaches V-0, and PHRR is reduced by 11.2%.

Photoactive CuI-Cross-Linked Polyurethane Materials

Using multinuclear copper iodide complexes as cross-linking agents in a polyurethane matrix, original photoluminescent stimuli-responsive materials were synthesized. The intrinsic photoluminescence properties of the covalently incorporated copper iodide complexes are thus transferred to the materials while retaining the beneficial characteristics of the polymer host. The transparent materials exhibit room-temperature phosphorescence with emission switching properties by displaying luminescence thermochromism and solvatochromism. The luminescence thermochromism is characterized by a change in the wavelength and intensity of the emission with temperature, and the vapochromic effect presents a contrasted response of extinction or exaltation according to the nature of the solvent of exposure. By combining the luminescence characteristics of photoactive copper iodide complexes with the ease of polymer processing, the application of these luminescent materials as phosphors in LED (light-emitting diode) devices was also demonstrated. The present study shows that the use of copper iodide complexes as cross-linkers in polymeric materials is a relevant strategy to design materials with enhanced functionalities in addition to their low cost and sustainable characteristics.

Intermolecular Hydrogen-Bond-Assisted Solid-State Dual-Emission Molecules with Mechanical Force-Induced Enhanced Emission

Hydrogen bonds not only play a crucial role in the life sciences but also endow molecules with fantastic physical and chemical properties, which help in the realization of their high-tech applications. This work presents an efficient strategy for achieving highly efficient solid-state dual-emission blue emitters with mechanical force-induced enhanced emission properties via intermolecular hydrogen bonds via novel pyrene-based intermediates, namely, 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-2,7-dihydroxypyrene (1) and 1,3,6,8-tetrabromo-2-hydroxypyrene (2), prepared via hydroxylation and bromination of pyrene in high yields. Moreover, further use of a classical Pd-catalyzed coupling reaction affords new pyrene-based luminescent materials 3-5, which display high thermal stability (in range of 336-447 °C), blue emission (<463 nm), and high quantum yields in solution. Interestingly, with the monosubstituted hydroxyl (OH) or methoxy (OMe) group located at position 2 of pyrene, compounds 4a and 5 display exciting dual emission with mechanical force-induced enhanced emission properties, due to the presence of several hydrogen-bond interactions. Moreover, this series of compounds exhibits numerous advantages, for example, deeper blue emission with a narrower full width at half-maximum, a stronger steric effect, and higher hydrophilicity. Thus, these novel bromopyrene intermediates and related pyrene-based luminescent materials will pave the way for further exploration of novel organic solid-state luminescent materials for potential application in organic electronics, bioimaging, chemosensors, etc.

Machine Learning Guided Design of Single-Phase Hybrid Lead Halide White Phosphors

Designing new single-phase white phosphors for solid-state lighting is a challenging trial-error process as it requires to navigate in a multidimensional space (composition of the host matrix/dopants, experimental conditions, etc.). Thus, no single-phase white phosphor has ever been reported to exhibit both a high color rendering index (CRI - degree to which objects appear natural under the white illumination) and a tunable correlated color temperature (CCT). In this article, a novel strategy consisting in iterating syntheses, characterizations, and machine learning (ML) models to design such white phosphors is demonstrated. With the guidance of ML models, a series of luminescent hybrid lead halides with ultra-high color rendering (above 92) mimicking the light of the sunrise/sunset (CCT = 3200 K), morning/afternoon (CCT = 4200 K), midday (CCT = 5500 K), full sun (CCT = 6500K), as well as an overcast sky (CCT = 7000 K) are precisely designed.

Polystyrene Functionalized with Diarylacetonitrile for the Visualization of Mechanoradicals and Improved Thermal Stability

The direct scission of polymer main chains leads to a decrease in the performance of the polymeric materials. Polystyrene-functionalized with diarylacetonitrile (DAAN) was prepared through a postpolymerization modification with 4-methoxymandelonitrile to generate mechanofluorescent polymers that enable the visualization of the scission of the polymer main chain. The polymeric mechanoradicals obtained from the homolytic cleavage of the polymer main chain in response to mechanical stress were observed using fluorescence and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. Moreover, a thermogravimetric analysis showed that the thermal stability of the polymers was greatly improved relative to the parent polystyrene, that is, the introduction of the DAAN moiety via postpolymerization modification endowed the original polymers with multiple functions in one step; specifically, the ability to visualize polymer main-chain scission and improved thermal stability.
