Transition Metal Catalysis Controlled by Hydrogen Bonding in the Second Coordination Sphere

Transition metal-catalyzed C(sp2/sp3)-H α-fluoroalkenylation from gem-(bromo/di)fluoroalkenes to monofluoroalkenes: scope, mechanisms, and synthetic applications

Organofluorines have a broad range of industrial applications, such as pharmaceuticals, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), solar cells, textiles, and construction coatings, and are used in peptidomimetics, surfactants, refrigerants, anesthetics, and agrochemicals. Among them are versatile monofluoroalkenes that play a crucial role in medicinal and synthetic chemistry. The synthetic strategies for this class of molecules are limited, and prior efforts frequently suffered from poor atom- and step-economies. As a surrogate pathway for traditional cross-coupling transformations, transition metal (TM)-catalyzed C-H direct α-fluoroalkenylation overcomes these obstacles and provides straightforward techniques to access monofluoroalkenes. Nevertheless, substrate scope is still a challenge for catalysis, where gem-bromofluoroalkene synthons are applicable with electronically biased substrates such as azoles, while gem-difluoroalkene-based strategies are limited to substrates containing N-based directing groups. Herein, we review the cutting-edge fluoroalkenylation research for direct synthesis of monofluoroalkenes achieved during the last decade (2013-2023). This review is divided into two main parts: the first part discusses TM-catalyzed direct α-fluoroalkenylation via the merging of C-H activation and C(sp2)-Br cleavage strategies using gem-bromofluoroalkenes, and the second part describes the same reaction, albeit with C(sp2)-F cleavage of highly explored gem-difluoroolefins. Our review surveys all previously reported monofluoroalkenes in this research area, including their preparation techniques, stereoselectivity, and yield percentages. Furthermore, optimal conditions, reactant scope, mechanistic investigations, synthetic applications, benefits, and drawbacks of each presented methodology are critically discussed.

Chiroptically Active Host-Guest Composites Using a Terpene-Based Micellar Capsule

For the design of a new chiroptically active host-guest system, a bent amphiphilic compound was synthesized using cyclic monoterpenes as key biorelated chiral frameworks. In water, the bent amphiphiles form a terpene-based micellar capsule with a core diameter of ∼2 nm in a spontaneous and quantitative fashion. The resultant chiral capsule shows wide-ranging uptake abilities toward achiral fluorescent dyes in water. Notably, relatively strong CD bands are generated from the resultant host-guest composites, e.g., possessing AIE-active tetraphenylethene and sterically demanding BODIPY dyes, through efficient host-to-guest chirality transfer. The composites also display CPL, with moderate to high emission asymmetry factors (|glum| = up to 3.3 × 10-3).

Highly (regio)selective hydroformylation of olefins using self-assembling phosphines

New phosphines with self-assembling 6-pyridinone moities were prepared, characterized, and examined in the hydroformylation of diverse olefins. Testing various known and novel ligands in the presence of [Rh(acac)(CO)2] under industrially relevant conditions, the hydroformylation of 1-octene proceeds best with 6,6'-(phenylphosphanediyl)bis(pyridin-2(1H)-one) (DPONP). Control experiments and modelling studies indicate dimerization of this ligand at higher temperatures (>100 °C). The optimal catalyst system is able to conserve high product linearity (>90%) for a broad range of olefins at industrially-employed temperatures at low ligand loading.

Bifunctional Ligand Enables Gold-Catalyzed Propargyl C-H Functionalization via Reactive Gold Allenylidene Intermediate

Gold allenylidene species have been seldom exploited as reactive intermediates in synthetically versatile catalytic reactions. By employing alkynylbenziodoxoles as the substrates and bifunctional WangPhos as the metal ligand, this work demonstrated ready catalytic access to these intermediates of general substitution patterns and their electrophilic reactivities at the γ-carbon center with a diverse range of nucleophiles. The reaction is driven by the reductive decomposition of the benziodoxole moiety and achieves the replacement of a propargylic proton with an N/O/C-based nucleophile, hence realizing reactivity umpolung. Corroborated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, the reaction mechanism involves a mild propargylic deprotonation. In contrast to prior works employing a tertiary amine functionality, a weakly BrØnsted-basic amide group in WangPhos is surprisingly effective in deprotonation at the propargylic position under a gold-ligand cooperation regime.

Iron-Catalyzed Asymmetric Imidation of Sulfides via Sterically Biased Nitrene Transfer

Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective nitrene transfer to sulfides has emerged as one of the most powerful strategies for rapid construction of enantioenriched sulfimides. However, achieving stereocontrol over highly active earth-abundant transition-metal nitrenoid intermediates remains a formidable challenge compared with precious metals. Herein, we disclose a chiral iron(II)/N,N'-dioxide-catalyzed enantioselective imidation of dialkyl and alkyl aryl sulfides using iminoiodinanes as nitrene precursors. A series of chiral sulfimides were obtained in moderate-to-good yields with high enantioselectivities (56 examples, up to 99% yield, 98:2 e.r.). The utility of this methodology was demonstrated by late-stage modification of complex molecules and synthesis of the chiral insecticide sulfoxaflor and the intermediates of related bioactive compounds. Based on experimental studies and theoretical calculations, a water-bonded high-spin iron nitrenoid species was identified as the key intermediate. The observed stereoselectivity was original from the steric repulsion between the amide unit of the ligand in the chiral cave and the bulky substituent of sulfides. Additionally, dioxazolones proved to be suitable acylnitrene precursors in the presence of an iron(III)/N,N'-dioxide complex, resulting in the formation of enantioselectivity-reversed sulfimides (14 examples, up to 81% yield, 97:3 e.r.).

Formation and reactivity of a unique M⋯C-H interaction stabilized by carborane cages

Broadening carborane applications has consistently been the goal of chemists in this field. Herein, compared to alkyl or aryl groups, a carborane cage demonstrates an advantage in stabilizing a unique bonding interaction: M⋯C-H interaction. Experimental results and theoretical calculations have revealed the characteristic of this two-center, two-electron bonding interaction, in which the carbon atom in the arene ring provides two electrons to the metal center. The reduced aromaticity of the benzene moiety, long distance between the metal and carbon atom in arene, and the upfield shift of the signal of M⋯C-H in the nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum distinguished this interaction from metal⋯C π interaction and metal-C(H) σ bonds. Control experiments demonstrate the unique electronic effects of carborane in stabilizing the M⋯C-H bonding interaction in organometallic chemistry. Furthermore, the M⋯C-H interaction can convert into C-H bond metallization under acidic conditions or via treatment with t-butyl isocyanide. These findings deepen our understanding regarding the interactions between metal centers and carbon atoms and provide new opportunities for the use of carboranes.

Regiodivergent Remote C-H Functionalization by Tuning Template Geometry

For transition-metal-catalyzed C-H functionalization, precise differentiation between remote adjacent C(sp2)-H bonds remains a long-standing challenge. Here, the template structure-directivity relationship on remote C-H functionalization of arenes was experimentally and computationally studied. By using geometry-tunable templates, Pd-catalyzed remote meta- and para-C-H activation of benzoic acids was achieved with high site selectivity.

Enhanced Reactivities of Iron(IV)-Oxo Porphyrin Species in Oxidation Reactions Promoted by Intramolecular Hydrogen-Bonding

High-valent iron-oxo species are one of the common intermediates in both biological and biomimetic catalytic oxidation reactions. Recently, hydrogen-bonding (H-bonding) has been proved to be critical in determining the selectivity and reactivity. However, few examples have been established for mechanistic insights into the H-bonding effect. Moreover, intramolecular H-bonding effect on both C-H activation and oxygen atom transfer (OAT) reactions in synthetic porphyrin model system has not been investigated yet. In this study, a series of heme-containing iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species with or without intramolecular H-bonding are synthesized and characterized. Kinetic studies revealed that intramolecular H-bonding can significantly enhance the reactivity of iron(IV)-oxo species in OAT, C-H activation, and electron-transfer reactions. This unprecedented unified H-bonding effect is elucidated by theoretical calculations, which showed that intramolecular H-bonding interactions lower the energy of the anti-bonding orbital of iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species, resulting in the enhanced reactivities in oxidation reactions irrespective of the reaction type. To the best of the knowledge, this is the first extensive investigation on the intramolecular H-bonding effect in heme system. The results show that H-bonding interactions have a unified effect with iron(IV)-oxo porphyrin species in all three investigated reactions.

Opportunities and challenges for plastic depolymerization by biomimetic catalysis

Plastic waste has imposed significant burdens on the environment. Chemical recycling allows for repeated regeneration of plastics without deterioration in quality, but often requires harsh reaction conditions, thus being environmentally unfriendly. Enzymatic catalysis offers a promising solution for recycling under mild conditions, but it faces inherent limitations such as poor stability, high cost, and narrow substrate applicability. Biomimetic catalysis may provide a new avenue by combining high enzyme-like activity with the stability of inorganic materials. Biomimetic catalysis has demonstrated great potential in biomass conversion and has recently shown promising progress in plastic degradation. This perspective discusses biomimetic catalysis for plastic degradation from two perspectives: the imitation of the active centers and the imitation of the substrate-binding clefts. Given the chemical similarity between biomass and plastics, relevant work is also included in the discussion to draw inspiration. We conclude this perspective by highlighting the challenges and opportunities in achieving sustainable plastic recycling via a biomimetic approach.

Evaluating Diazene to N2 Interconversion at Iron-Sulfur Complexes

Biological N2 reduction occurs at sulfur-rich multiiron sites, and an interesting potential pathway is concerted double reduction/ protonation of bridging N2 through PCET. Here, we test the feasibility of using synthetic sulfur-supported diiron complexes to mimic this pathway. Oxidative proton transfer from μ-η1 : η1-diazene (HN=NH) is the microscopic reverse of the proposed N2 fixation pathway, revealing the energetics of the process. Previously, Sellmann assigned the purple metastable product from two-electron oxidation of [{Fe2+(PPr3)L1}2(μ-η1 : η1-N2H2)] (L1=tetradentate SSSS ligand) at -78 °C as [{Fe2+(PPr3)L1}2(μ-η1 : η1-N2)]2+, which would come from double PCET from diazene to sulfur atoms of the supporting ligands. Using resonance Raman, Mössbauer, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies in conjunction with DFT calculations, we show that the product is not an N2 complex. Instead, the data are most consistent with the spectroscopically observed species being the mononuclear iron(III) diazene complex [{Fe(PPr3)L1}(η2-N2H2)]+. Calculations indicate that the proposed double PCET has a barrier that is too high for proton transfer at the reaction temperature. Also, PCET from the bridging diazene is highly exergonic as a result of the high Fe3+/2+ redox potential, indicating that the reverse N2 protonation would be too endergonic to proceed. This system establishes the "ground rules" for designing reversible N2/N2H2 interconversion through PCET, such as tuning the redox potentials of the metal sites.

Ligand-Bound CO2 as a Nonclassical Route toward Efficient Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with a Ni N-Confused Porphyrin

Implementing the synergistic effects between the metal and the ligand has successfully streamlined the energetics for CO2 activation and gained high catalytic activities, establishing the important breakthroughs in photocatalytic CO2 reduction. Herein, we describe a Ni(II) N-confused porphyrin complex (NiNCP) featuring an acidic N-H group. It is readily deprotonated and exists in an anion form during catalysis. Owing to this functional site, NiNCP gave rise to an outstanding turnover number (TON) as high as 217,000 with a 98% selectivity for CO2 reduction to CO, while the parent Ni(II) porphyrin (NiTPP) was found to be nearly inactive. Our mechanistic analysis revealed a nonclassical reaction pattern where CO2 was effectively activated via the attack of the Lewis-basic ligand. The resulting ligand-bound CO2 adduct could be further reduced to produce CO. This new metal-ligand synergistic effect is anticipated to inspire the design of highly active catalysts for small molecule activations.

Application of sSPhos as a Chiral Ligand for Palladium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Allylic Alkylation

Palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation is a versatile method for C-C bond formation. Many established classes of chiral ligands can perform allylic alkylation reactions enantioselectively, but identification of new ligand classes remains important for future development of the field. We demonstrate that enantiopure sSPhos, a bifunctional chiral monophosphine ligand, when used as its tetrabutyl ammonium salt, is a highly effective ligand for a benchmark Pd-catalyzed allylic alkylation reaction. We explore the scope and limitations and perform experiments to probe the origin of selectivity. In contrast with reactions previously explored using enantiopure sSPhos, it appears that steric bulk around the sulfonate group is responsible for the high enantioselectivity in this case, rather than attractive noncovalent interactions.

Regulating Access to Active Sites via Hydrogen Bonding and Cation-Dipole Interactions: A Dual Cofactor Approach to Switchable Catalysis

Hydrogen bonding networks are ubiquitous in biological systems and play a key role in controlling the conformational dynamics and allosteric interactions of enzymes. Yet in small organometallic catalysts, hydrogen bonding rarely controls ligand binding to the metal center. In this work, a hydrogen bonding network within a well-defined organometallic catalyst works in concert with cation-dipole interactions to gate substrate access to the active site. An ammine ligand acts as one cofactor, templating a hydrogen bonding network within a pendent crown ether and preventing the binding of strong donor ligands, such as nitriles, to the nickel center. Sodium ions are the second cofactor, disrupting hydrogen bonding to enable switchable ligand substitution reactions. Thermodynamic analyses provide insight into the energetic requirements of the different supramolecular interactions that enable substrate gating. The dual cofactor approach enables switchable catalytic hydroamination of crotononitrile. Systematic comparisons of catalysts with varying structural features provide support for the critical role of the dual cofactors in achieving on/off catalysis with substrates containing strongly donating functional groups that might otherwise interfere with switchable catalysts.

Substrate scope driven optimization of an encapsulated hydroformylation catalyst

Caged complexes can provide impressive selective catalysts. Due to the complex shapes of such caged catalysts, however, the level of selectivity control of a single substrate cannot be extrapolated to other substrates. Herein, the substrate scope using 41 terminal alkene substrates is investigated in the hydroformylation reaction with an encapsulated rhodium catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)3(P(mPy3(ZnTPP)3))] (CAT1). For all substrates, the amount of branched products formed was higher with CAT1 than with the unencapsulated reference catalyst [Rh(H)(CO)2(P(mPy3))2] (CAT2) (linear/branched ratio between 2.14 and 0.12 for CAT1 and linear/branched ratio between 6.22 and 0.59 for CAT2). Interestingly, the level of cage induced selectivity depends strongly on the substrate structure that is converted. Analysis of the substrate scope combined with DFT calculations suggests that noncovalent interactions between the substrate moieties and cage walls play a key role in controlling the regioselectivity. Consequently, these supramolecular interactions were further optimized by replacing the ZnTPP building block with a zinc porphyrin analog that contained OiPr substituents on the meta position of the aryl rings. The resulting caged catalyst, CAT4, converted substrates with even higher branched selectivity.

Rhodium-Catalyzed Asymmetric Hydrogenation and Transfer Hydrogenation of 1,3-Dipolar Nitrones

Owing to their distinctive 1,3-dipolar structure, the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of nitrones to hydroxylamines has been a formidable and longstanding challenge, characterized by intricate enantiocontrol and susceptibility to N-O bond cleavage. In this study, the asymmetric hydrogenation and transfer hydrogenation of nitrones were accomplished with a tethered TsDPEN-derived cyclopentadienyl rhodium(III) catalyst (TsDPEN: p-toluenesulfonyl-1,2-diphenylethylene-1,2-diamine), the reaction proceeds via a novel 7-membered cyclic transition state, producing chiral hydroxylamines with up to 99 % yield and >99 % ee. The practical viability of this methodology was underscored by gram-scale catalytic reactions and subsequent transformations. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations and DFT calculations were also conducted to elucidate the origin of enantioselectivity.

Hydrogenation of cyclohexene over single-atom Pt or Pd incorporated porous ceria nanoparticles under solvent-free conditions

In order to maximize the utilization of noble metals in catalysis, single atom of palladium (Pd) and platinum (Pt) were incorporated individually in the framework of porous ceria (CeO2) by using a one-step flash combustion method. Samples with different Pd and Pt loading (0.5, 1, 2.5, and 5 wt%) were prepared and examined by using different analysis techniques such as XRD, ICP, N2 sorption measurements, SEM, HR-TEM, and XPS. The characterization data confirms the formation of zero-state single-atom Pt and Pd (with possible formation of Pd nanoparticles with a size less than 5 nm) incorporated onto the three-dimensional porous ceria structure. The catalytic activity of the synthesized materials was studied in the cyclohexene reduction to cyclohexane at 393 K and 3 atm of pure hydrogen (H2) gas as a model reaction. The obtained results demonstrated that the conversion percentage of cyclohexene is increasing with Pd or Pt loading. The best cyclohexene conversion, 21% and 29%, was achieved over the sample that contains 5 wt% of Pt and Pd, respectively. The collected catalytic data fit the zero-order reaction model, and the rate constant of each catalyst was determined. The catalytic experiments of the most-performed catalysts were repeated five times and the obtained loss in activity was insignificant.

Role of Explicit Solvation in Computational Modeling of Chemical Reactions: Mechanism of Cu(I) Transfer Between Thiolate-Based Chelators in Water

Solvation plays important roles in controlling the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of chemical reactions. The conventional approaches to treat solvation via electronic structure methods are likely to become inadequate, when the reacting solutes have strong electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions with the solvent and undergo significant structural changes during the course of the reaction. In this article, we present evidence of such solvent and structural effects in the computational study of the Cu(I) transfer reaction between thiolate-based chelators dithiobutylamine (DTBA) and dithiotheritol (DTT) in water, inspired from biological copper trafficking phenomena. We propose a general solution to the problem by combining classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the bulk system and static quantum chemistry calculations. The fluctuating solvation shell was estimated from MD, and energetics was assessed by averaging QM energies of a series of molecular clusters constructed from the MD snapshots. Applying this approach, we propose a reaction pathway with estimates of relative intermediate stabilities and barriers, which suggest the overall reaction to be reversible in nature and likely to go through both two and three coordinated intermediates, confirming previous studies of similar protein analogues. An interesting fact that emerged from our study was the strong indication that the rate-determining step is the deprotonation of initial thiol bound Cu(I) complex, without involving any Cu(I)-S bonds. The proposed method will lead to a better treatment of solvations, and these mechanistic insights will aid our understanding of biological copper(I) trafficking.

Zwitterionic Aqua Palladacycles with Noncovalent Interactions for meta-Selective Suzuki Coupling of 3,4-Dichlorophenol and 3,4-Dichlorobenzyl Alcohol in Water

The site-selective reaction of substrates with multiple reactive sites has been a focus of the current synthetic chemistry. The use of attractive noncovalent interactions between the catalyst and substrate is emerging as a versatile approach to address site-selectivity challenges. Herein, we designed and synthesized a series of palladacycles, to control meta-selective Suzuki coupling of 3,4-dichlorophenol and 3,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol. Noncovalent interactions directed zwitterionic aqua palladacycles catalyzed meta-selective Suzuki couplings of 3,4-dichloroarenes bearing hydroxyl in water have been developed. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that the electrostatic interactions play a critical role in meta-selective coupling of 3,4-dichlorophenol, while meta-selective coupling of 3,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol arises due to the hydrogen-bonding interactions.

Light-Responsive Supramolecular Liquid-Crystalline Metallacycle for Orthogonal Multimode Photopatterning

The development of multimode photopatterning systems based on supramolecular coordination complexes (SCCs) is considerably attractive in supramolecular chemistry and materials science, because SCCs can serve as promising platforms for the incorporation of multiple functional building blocks. Herein, we report a light-responsive liquid-crystalline metallacycle that is constructed by coordination-driven self-assembly. By exploiting its fascinating liquid crystal features, bright emission properties, and facile photocyclization capability, a unique system with spatially-controlled fluorescence-resonance energy transfer (FRET) is built through the introduction of a photochromic spiropyran derivative, which led to the realization of the first example of a liquid-crystalline metallacycle for orthogonal photopatterning in three-modes, namely holography, fluorescence, and photochromism.

The Role H-Bonding and Supramolecular Structures in Homogeneous and Enzymatic Catalysis

The article analyzes the role of hydrogen bonds and supramolecular structures in enzyme catalysis and model systems. Hydrogen bonds play a crucial role in many enzymatic reactions. However, scientists have only recently attempted to harness the power of hydrogen bonds in homogeneous catalytic systems. One of the newest directions is associated with attempts to control the properties of catalysts by influencing the "second coordination sphere" of metal complexes. The role H-bonding, and the building of stable supramolecular nanostructures due to intermolecular H-bonds, based on catalytic active heteroligand iron (Fe) or nickel (Ni) complexes formed during hydrocarbon oxidations were assessed via the AFM (Atomic-force microscopy) method, which was proposed and applied by authors of this manuscript. Th is article also discusses the roles of hydrogen bonds and supramolecular structures in oxidation reactions catalyzed by heteroligand Ni and Fe complexes, which are not only effective homogeneous catalysts but also structural and functional models of Oxygenases.

Catalytic Mechanism of Collagen Hydrolysis by Zinc(II)-Dependent Matrix Metalloproteinase-1

Human matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) is a zinc(II)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes collagenolysis. Despite the availability of extensive experimental data, the mechanism of MMP-1-catalyzed collagenolysis remains poorly understood due to the lack of experimental structure of a catalytically productive enzyme-substrate complex of MMP-1. In this study, we apply molecular dynamics and combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics to reveal the reaction mechanism of MMP-1 based on a computationally modeled structure of the catalytically competent complex of MMP-1 that contains a large triple-helical peptide substrate. Our proposed mechanism involves the participation of an auxiliary (second) water molecule (wat2) in addition to the zinc(II)-coordinated water (wat1). The reaction initiates through a proton transfer to Glu219, followed by a nucleophilic attack by a zinc(II)-coordinated hydroxide anion nucleophile at the carbonyl carbon of the scissile bond, leading to the formation of a tetrahedral intermediate (IM2). The process continues with a hydrogen-bond rearrangement to facilitate proton transfer from wat2 to the amide nitrogen of the scissile bond and, finally, C-N bond cleavage. The calculations indicate that the rate-determining step is the water-mediated nucleophilic attack with an activation energy barrier of 22.3 kcal/mol. Furthermore, the calculations show that the hydrogen-bond rearrangement/proton-transfer step can proceed in a consecutive or concerted manner, depending on the conformation of the tetrahedral intermediate, with the consecutive mechanism being energetically preferable. Overall, the study reveals the crucial role of a second water molecule and the dynamics for effective MMP-1-catalyzed collagenolysis.

Urea-Functionalized Fe4 L6 Cages for Supramolecular Gold Catalyst Encapsulation to Control Substrate Activation Modes

The excellent catalytic performances of enzymes in terms of activity and selectivity are an inspiration for synthetic chemists and this has resulted in the development of synthetic containers for supramolecular catalysis. In such containers the local environment and pre-organization of catalysts and substrates leads to control of the activity and selectivity of the catalyst. Herein we report a supramolecular strategy to encapsulate single catalysts in a urea-functionalized Fe4 L6 cage, which can co-encapsulate a functionalized urea substrate through hydrogen bonding. Distinguished selectivity is obtained, imposed by the cage as site isolation only allows catalysis through π activation of the substrate and as a result the selectivity is independent of catalyst concentration. The encapsulated catalyst is more active than the free analogue, an effect that can be ascribed to transitionstate stabilization rather than substrate pre-organization, as revealed by the MM kinetic data. The simple strategy reported here is expected to be of general use in many reactions, for which the catalyst can be functionalized with a sulfonate group required for encapsulation.

Broadening the catalytic region from the cavity to windows by M6L12 nanospheres in cyclizations

Supramolecular cages have received tremendous attention as they can contain catalysts that exhibit confinement effects in the cavity, leading to excellent performances. Herein, we report an example wherein the catalytic region is extended from the cage cavity to the windows, and investigate its confinement effect by utilizing the Pd6LAu12 cage that contains rigidly fixed and isolated gold complexes at the windows. Pd6LAu12 exhibit three features of particular interest while assessing their properties in gold-catalyzed cyclization reactions. First, the catalysts experience a cage effect as they display higher reactivity and selectivity compared to the monomeric analogue, as a result of substrate pre-organization at the windows. Second, the metal complexes are physically separated by the cage structure, preventing the formation of less active dinuclear gold complexes making it more stable under hydrous conditions. Third, the cage windows present the characteristics of enzymatic catalysis via Michaelis-Menten-type mechanism analysis. This contribution presents an alternative way to engineer supramolecular catalysts through extending the catalytic region.

Hydrogen-bond-acceptor ligands enable distal C(sp3)-H arylation of free alcohols

The functionalization of C-H bonds in organic molecules is one of the most direct approaches for chemical synthesis. Recent advances in catalysis have allowed native chemical groups such as carboxylic acids, ketones and amines to control and direct C(sp3)-H activation1-4. However, alcohols, among the most common functionalities in organic chemistry5, have remained intractable because of their low affinity for late transition-metal catalysts6,7. Here we describe ligands that enable alcohol-directed arylation of δ-C(sp3)-H bonds. We use charge balance and a secondary-coordination-sphere hydrogen-bonding interaction-evidenced by structure-activity relationship studies, computational modelling and crystallographic data-to stabilize L-type hydroxyl coordination to palladium, thereby facilitating the assembly of the key C-H cleavage transition state. In contrast to previous studies in C-H activation, in which secondary interactions were used to control selectivity in the context of established reactivity8-13, this report demonstrates the feasibility of using secondary interactions to enable challenging, previously unknown reactivity by enhancing substrate-catalyst affinity.

Anion-Regulated Hierarchical Self-Assembly and Chiral Induction of Metallo-Tetrahedra

The precise control over hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures relying on the elaboration of multiple noncovalent interactions between basic building blocks is both elusive and highly desirable. We herein report a terpyridine-based metallo-cage T with a tetrahedral motif and utilized it as an efficient building block for the controlled hierarchical self-assembly of superstructures in response to different halide ions. Initially, the hierarchical superstructure of metallo-cage T adopted a hexagonal close-packed structure. By adding Cl- /Br- or I- , drastically different hierarchical superstructures with highly-tight hexagonal packing or graphite-like packing arrangements, respectively, have been achieved. These unusual halide-ion-triggered hierarchical structural changes resulted in quite distinct intermolecular channels, which provided new insights into the mechanism of three-dimensional supramolecular aggregation and crystal growth based on macromolecular construction. In addition, the chiral induction of the metallo-cage T can be realized with the addition of chiral anions, which stereoselectively generated either PPPP- or MMMM-type enantiomers.

Boosting the activity of Mizoroki-Heck cross-coupling reactions with a supramolecular palladium catalyst favouring remote Zn⋯pyridine interactions

Transition metal catalysis benefitting from supramolecular interactions in the secondary coordination sphere in order to pre-organize substrates around the active site and reach a specific selectivity typically occurs under long reaction times and mild reaction temperatures with the aim to maximize such subtle effects. Herein, we demonstrate that the kinetically labile Zn⋯N interaction between a pyridine substrate and a zinc-porphyrin site serving for substrate binding is a unique type of weak interaction that enables identification of supramolecular effects in transition metal catalysis after one hour at a high reaction temperature of 130 °C. Under carefully selected reaction conditions, supramolecularly-regulated palladium-catalyzed Mizoroki-Heck reactions between 3-bromopyridine and terminal olefins (acrylates or styrenes) proceeded in a more efficient manner compared to the non-supramolecular version. The supramolecular catalysis developed here also displayed interesting substrate-selectivity patterns.

A substrate descriptor based approach for the prediction and understanding of the regioselectivity in caged catalyzed hydroformylation

The use of data driven tools to predict the selectivity of homogeneous catalysts has received considerable attention in the past years. In these studies often the catalyst structure is varied, but the use of substrate descriptors to rationalize the catalytic outcome is relatively unexplored. To study whether this may be an effective tool, we investigated both an encapsulated and a non-encapsulated rhodium based catalyst in the hydroformylation reaction of 41 terminal alkenes. For the non-encapsulated catalyst, CAT2, the regioselectivity of the acquired substrate scope could be predicted with high accuracy using the Δ13C NMR shift of the alkene carbon atoms as a descriptor (R2 = 0.74) and when combined with a computed intensity of the CC stretch vibration (ICC stretch) the accuracy increased further (R2 = 0.86). In contrast, a substrate descriptor approach with an encapsulated catalyst, CAT1, appeared more challenging indicating a confined space effect. We investigated Sterimol parameters of the substrates as well as computer-aided drug design descriptors of the substrates, but these parameters did not result in a predictive formula. The most accurate substrate descriptor based prediction was made with the Δ13C NMR shift and ICC stretch (R2 = 0.52), suggestive of the involvement of CH-π interactions. To further understand the confined space effect of CAT1, we focused on the subset of 21 allylbenzene derivatives to investigate predictive parameters unique for this subset. These results showed the inclusion of a charge parameter of the aryl ring improved the regioselectivity predictions, which is in agreement with our assessment that noncovalent interactions between the phenyl ring of the cage and the aryl ring of the substrate are relevant for the regioselectivity outcome. However, the correlation is still weak (R2 = 0.36) and as such we are investigating novel parameters that should improve the overall regioselectivity outcome.

Chalcogen bonding in copper(II)-mediated synthesis

The chalcogen bond (ChB) is a noncovalent attraction between an electrophilic chalcogen atom and a nucleophilic (Nu) region in the same (intramolecular) or another (intermolecular) molecular entity: R-Ch⋯Nu (Ch = O, S, Se or Te; R = substituents; Nu = nucleophile). ChB is comparable to the hydrogen and halogen bonds both in terms of strengths and directionality. However, in contrast to the monovalent halogen atoms, usually the divalent or tetravalent chalcogen atoms are able to display more than one electrophilic centre (on account of the existence of two or three species bonded to the chalcogen atom), which provides an additional opportunity in the use of this type of noncovalent binding in synthetic operations. In this work, the role of ChB at the secondary coordination sphere of metal complexes through copper(II)-mediated activation of dioxygen or of one nitrile group of a 1,2,5-selenadiazole-3,4-dicarbonitrile ligand to form a carbimidate or an imino-carboxylic acid is demonstrated. DFT calculations allowed evaluation of the strength of the ChBs and proved their relevant structure directing role in the solid state architectures. The effect of metal-coordination on the σ-hole opposite to the coordinated SeO bond has been analysed using molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces and explains the greater ability of the coordinated selenoxide derivatives to form strong ChBs.

Probing the influence of substrate binding on photocatalytic dehalogenation with a heteroleptic supramolecular [M4La2Lb2] square containing PDI photosensitizers as ligands

Photoredox catalysis is a valuable tool in a large variety of chemical reactions. Main challenges still to be overcome are photodegradation of photocatalysts and substrates, short lifetimes of reactive intermediates, and selectivity issues due to unwanted side reactions. A potential solution to these challenges is the pre-organization of the photosensitizer, substrate and (co)-catalyst in supramolecular self-assembled structures. In such architectures, (organic) dyes can be stabilized, and higher selectivity could potentially be achieved through pre-organizing desired reaction partners via non-covalent interactions. Perylene diimide (PDI) is an organic dye, which can be readily reduced to its mono- and dianion. Excitation of both anions leads to highly reducing excited states, which are able to reduce a variety of substrates via single electron transfer. The incorporation of PDI into a heteroleptic [M4La2Lb2] supramolecular square has been recently demonstrated. Herein we investigate its photophysical properties and demonstrate that incorporated PDI indeed features photocatalytic activity. Initial results suggest that the pre-organisation by binding positively affects the outcome.

Hydrogen-Bonded Matched Ion Pair Gold(I) Catalysis

The enantioselective reaction of 1,6-enynes with O-, N-, and C-nucleophiles has been developed by matched ion pair gold(I) catalysis in which the chiral gold(I) cation and anion are H-bonded through a urea group. Very high levels of enantiocontrol are achieved (up to >99:1 er) for a broad scope of substrates. DFT studies demonstrate the importance of the H-bond donor group in anchoring the matched chiral cation- and anion-favoring additional noncovalent interactions.

Amino Acid-Derived Ionic Chiral Catalysts Enable Desymmetrizing Cross-Coupling to Remote Acyclic Quaternary Stereocenters

Synthetic application of asymmetric catalysis relies on strategic alignment of bond construction to creation of chirality of a target molecule. Remote desymmetrization offers distinctive advantages of spatial decoupling of catalytic transformation and generation of a stereogenic element. However, such spatial separation presents substantial difficulties for the chiral catalyst to discriminate distant enantiotopic sites through a reaction three or more bonds away from a prochirality center. Here, we report a strategy that establishes acyclic quaternary carbon stereocenters through cross-coupling reactions at distal positions of aryl substituents. The new class of amino acid-derived ionic chiral catalysts enables desymmetrizing (enantiotopic-group-selective) Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, Sonogashira reaction, and Buchwald-Hartwig amination between diverse diarylmethane scaffolds and aryl, alkynyl, and amino coupling partners, providing rapid access to enantioenriched molecules that project substituents to widely spaced positions in the three-dimensional space. Experimental and computational investigations reveal electrostatic steering of substrates by the C-terminus of chiral ligands through ionic interactions. Cooperative ion-dipole interactions between the catalyst's amide group and potassium cation aid in the preorganization that transmits asymmetry to the product. This study demonstrates that it is practical to achieve precise long-range stereocontrol through engineering the spatial arrangements of the ionic catalysts' substrate-recognizing groups and metal centers.

Bimetallic Molecular Catalyst Design for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

The core challenge in developing cost-efficient catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2 ) conversion mainly lies in controlling its complex reaction pathways. One such strategy exploits bimetallic cooperativity, which relies on the synergistic interaction between two metal centers to activate and convert the CO2 substrate. While this approach has seen an important trend in heterogeneous catalysis as a handle to control stabilities of surface intermediates, it has not often been utilized in molecular and heterogenized molecular catalytic systems. In this review, we gather general principles on how natural CO2 activating enzymes take advantage of bimetallic strategy and how phosphines, cyclams, polypyridyls, porphyrins, and cryptates-based homo- and hetero-bimetallic molecular catalysts can help understand the synergistic effect of two metal centers.

Synthesis of Hybrid Ligands with Nitrile and Cage Phosphane Donor Groups and their Applications in Gold-Mediated Reactions

Altering the donor properties of phosphane ligands through substituent variation is an established tool in coordination chemistry and catalysis. This contribution describes the synthesis of two new hybrid donors (L) combining 1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,4,6-trioxa-8-phosphaadamantane-8-yl (PCg) and nitrile donor groups at different molecular scaffolds, viz. ferrocene-1,1'-diyl (fc) and 1,2-phenylene. These ligands were used to prepare dimeric Au(I) complexes [Au2 (μ(P,N)-L)2 ][SbF6 ]2 , which were evaluated as silver-free, preformed catalysts in Au-mediated cycloisomerization of (Z)-3-methylpent-2-en-4-yn-1-ol to 2,3-dimethylfuran. The catalyst featuring the ferrocene-based ligand, viz., [Au2 (μ(P,N)-CgPfcCN)2 ][SbF6 ]2 , showed the best catalytic performance at low catalyst loading (0.5 or 0.15 mol.%), which exceeded that of its diphenylphosphanyl analog [Au2 (μ(P,N)-Ph2 PfcCN)2 ][SbF6 ]2 studied earlier and the prototypical Au(I) precatalyst [Au(PPh3 )(MeCN)][SbF6 ].

Enhancing Substrate-Metal Catalyst Affinity via Hydrogen Bonding: Pd(II)-Catalyzed β-C(sp3)-H Bromination of Free Carboxylic Acids

The achievement of sufficient substrate-metal catalyst affinity is a fundamental challenge for the development of synthetically useful C-H activation reactions of weakly coordinating native substrates. While hydrogen bonding has been harnessed to bias site selectivity in existing C(sp²)-H activation reactions, the potential for designing catalysts with hydrogen bond donors (HBDs) to enhance catalyst-substrate affinity and, thereby, facilitate otherwise unreactive C(sp³)-H activation remains to be demonstrated. Herein, we report the discovery of a ligand scaffold containing a remote amide motif that can form a favorable meta-macrocyclic hydrogen bonding interaction with the aliphatic acid substrate. The utility of this ligand scaffold is demonstrated through the development of an unprecedented C(sp³)-H bromination of α-tertiary and α-quaternary free carboxylic acids, which proceeds in exceedingly high mono-selectivity. The geometric relationship between the NHAc hydrogen bond donor and the coordinating quinoline ligand is crucial for forming the meta-macrocyclophane-like hydrogen bonding interaction, which provides a guideline for the future design of catalysts employing secondary interactions.

NDIPhos as a platform for chiral supramolecular ligands in rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation

Chiral naphthalene diimide ligands (NDIPhos) were exploited in rhodium-catalyzed enantioselective hydrogenation. The key feature of these ligands is their ability to self-assemble via π-π interactions to mimic bidentate ligands, offering a complementary method to traditional supramolecular strategies. This concept was further substantiated by computations with the composite electronic-structure method r²SCAN-3c.

Bifunctional Phosphine-Enabled Regioselective Cycloisomerization of Enynyl Esters En Route to Bicyclo[2.2.1]heptenes

Expedient access to bridged enol benzoates is realized via a tandem gold-catalyzed cycloisomerization of enynyl esters and the Diels-Alder reaction. The gold catalysis permits the use of enynyl substrates without additional propargylic substitution and achieves the highly regioselective formation of less stable cyclopentadienyl esters. The regioselectivity is enabled by a bifunctional phosphine ligand, the remote aniline group of which facilitates α-deprotonation of a gold carbene intermediate. The reaction works with different alkene substitution patterns and various dienophiles.

Folding-Induced Promotion of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfers via Proximal Base for Light-Driven Water Oxidation

Proton-coupled electron-transfer (PCET) processes play a key role in biocatalytic energy conversion and storage, for example, photosynthesis or nitrogen fixation. Here, we report a series of bipyridine-containing di- to tetranuclear Ru(bda) macrocycles 2 C-4 C (bda: 2,2'-bipyridine-6,6'-dicarboxylate) to promote O-O bond formation. In photocatalytic water oxidation under neutral conditions, all complexes 2 C-4 C prevail in a folded conformation that support the water nucleophilic attack (WNA) pathway with remarkable turnover frequencies of up to 15.5 s^-1 per Ru unit respectively. Single-crystal X-ray analysis revealed an increased tendency for intramolecular π-π stacking and preorganization of the proximal bases close to the active centers for the larger macrocycles. H/D kinetic isotope effect studies and electrochemical data demonstrate the key role of the proximal bipyridines as proton acceptors in lowering the activation barrier for the crucial nucleophilic attack of H₂ O in the WNA mechanism.

Nickel-Catalyzed Defluorophosphonylation of Aryl Fluorides

A Ni-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction between aryl fluorides and dialkyl phosphonates [HP(O)(OR)₂] (R = secondary alkyl groups) in the presence of potassium tert-butoxide as a base is reported. The reaction converted various aryl fluorides into the corresponding aryl phosphonates even when electron-donating substituents were present on the aromatic ring. The combined experimental and computational studies suggested Ni-K⁺ cooperative action of a Ni(0) complex chelated with a strongly electron-donating ion-bridged dimeric phosphite ligand system [P(OR)₂O^-K⁺]₂ that facilitates turnover-limiting C-F bond oxidative addition of aryl fluorides.

Asymmetric Hydrogenation of Oximes Synergistically Assisted by Lewis and Brønsted Acids

Due to their low reactivity, difficult enantiocontrol, and proneness to N-O bond cleavage, the catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation of oximes to hydroxylamines has remained a significant challenge. Herein, a Lewis and Brønsted acid cooperation strategy was established for the asymmetric hydrogenation of oximes, providing the corresponding hydroxylamines with up to 95% yield and up to 96% ee. Addition of Lewis and Brønsted acid was crucial to obtain high conversion and enantioselectivity. Mechanistic investigations indicates that the thiourea fragment of the ligand, Lewis acid (In(OTf)₃ or Zn(OAc)₂), as well as the Brønsted acid (l-CSA) played vital roles in the control of reactivity and enantioselectivity of the reaction. In addition, the synthetic elaboration of this transformation was demonstrated by gram scale experiment with retention of the yield and enantioselectivity.

Tuning the coordination properties of chiral pseudopeptide bis(2-picolyl)amine and iminodiacetamide ligands in Zn(ii) and Cu(ii) complexes
