Green and Sustainable Solvents in Chemical Processes

Renewable hemicellulose-based materials for value-added applications

The importance of renewable resources and environmentally friendly materials has grown globally in recent time. Hemicellulose is renewable lignocellulosic materials that have been the subject of substantial valorisation research. Due to its distinctive benefits, including its wide availability, low cost, renewability, biodegradability, simplicity of chemical modification, etc., it has attracted increasing interest in a number of value-added fields. In this review, a systematic summarizes of the structure, extraction method, and characterization technique for hemicellulose-based materials was carried out. Also, their most current developments in a variety of value-added adsorbents, biomedical, energy-related, 3D-printed materials, sensors, food packaging applications were discussed. Additionally, the most recent challenges and prospects of hemicellulose-based materials are emphasized and examined in-depth. It is anticipated that in the near future, persistent scientific efforts will enable the renewable hemicellulose-based products to achieve practical applications.

Sustainable extraction methods of carotenoids from mango (Mangifera indica L. 'Kent') pulp: Ultrasound assisted extraction and green solvents

Mango is a good source of carotenoids for use in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical products because of their organoleptic and health-promoting properties. Safe and sustainable methods for their extraction is required. The present investigation was aimed to study concentration and carotenoid profile of 'Kent' mango pulp through a conventional extraction (CE) and ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) using traditional solvents (tetrahydrofuran-THF and diethyl ether: petroleum ether-DE:PE) and green solvents (GS) (2-metiltetrahydrofuran, 2 m-THF; cyclopentyl methyl ether, CPME). Mango showed (μg/g d.w.) β-carotene (29.4), zeaxanthin (1.28), β-cryptoxanthin (2.8), phytoene (18.68) and phytofluene (7.45) in a CE using DE:PE. Similar results were obtained applying DE:PE in UAE and GS in a CE, so CPME and 2-mTHF seem suitable solvents to replace DE:PE in CE. The yield of total carotenes, xanthophylls and carotenoids using GS combined with UAE was lower than with CE, but important enough to be used as a sustainable procedure for obtaining carotenoids from mango pulp.

Phthalocyanines Synthesis: A State-of-The-Art Review of Sustainable Approaches Through Green Chemistry Metrics

Driven by escalating environmental concerns, synthetic chemistry faces an urgent need for a green revolution. Green chemistry, with its focus on low environmental impacting chemicals and minimized waste production, emerges as a powerful tool in addressing this challenge. Metrics such as the E-factor guide the design of environmentally friendly strategies for chemical processes by quantifying the waste generated in obtaining target products, thus enabling interventions to minimize it. Phthalocyanines (Pcs), versatile molecules with exceptional physical and chemical properties, hold immense potential for technological applications. This review aims to bridge the gap between green chemistry and phthalocyanine synthesis by collecting the main examples of environmentally sustainable syntheses documented in the literature. The calculation of the E-factor of a selection of them provides insights on how crucial it is to evaluate a synthetic process in its entirety. This approach allows for a better evaluation of the actual sustainability of the phthalocyanine synthetic process and indicates possible strategies to improve it.

Amino acid-appended pyromellitic diimide liquid materials, their photoluminescence, and the thermal response that turns the photoluminescence off

We report a liquid material based on an L-valine-appended pyromellitic diimide framework. This liquid adopts a room-temperature liquid with Tg at -50 °C and can dissolve naphthalene derivatives to show various photoluminescent colors. Furthermore, the on/off photoluminescence of these solutions can be controlled by heating.

Carbon dots for efficient detection of water content in organic solvents

The trace amount of water in organic solvents can affect the progress of chemical reactions, which will adversely affect chemical production in many industries, resulting in a doubling of costs. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) with abundant polar groups were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method. The prepared CDs showed superior dispersibility and fluorescence performance compared to the CDs that have been reported for the detection of water content in organic solvents. It can realize the fluorescence detection of trace water in several water-soluble organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide, ethanol and methanol with wide linear range (0 %-100 %) and high sensitivity. This will provide a powerful tool for the rapid detection of water content in organic solvents in chemical production.

Cyclopropanation with Non-Stabilized Carbenes via Ketyl Radicals

A radical mechanism enables simple and robust access to nonstabilized, alkyl iron carbenes for novel (2 + 1) cycloadditions. This Fe-catalyzed strategy employs simple, aliphatic aldehydes as carbene precursors in a practical, efficient, and stereoselective cyclopropanation. This air- and water-tolerant method permits convenient generation of iron carbenes and coupling to an exceptionally wide range of sterically and electronically diverse alkenes (nucleophilic, electrophilic, and neutral). A transient ketyl radical intermediate is key to accessing and harnessing this rare, alkyl iron carbene reactivity. Mechanistic experiments confirm the (a) intermediacy of ketyl radicals, (b) iron carbene formation by radical capture, and (c) nonconcerted nature of the (2 + 1) cycloaddition.

NiII-containing l-glutamic acid cross-linked chitosan anchored on Fe3O4/f-MWCNT: a sustainable catalyst for the green reduction and one-pot two-step reductive Schotten-Baumann-type acetylation of nitroarenes

In this research, new and eye-catching catalytic applications of the nickelII (NiII) nanoparticles (NPs)-containing l-glutamic acid cross-linked chitosan anchored on magnetic carboxylic acid-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (Fe3O4/f-MWCNT-CS-Glu/NiII) system, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM-based energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and elemental mapping, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), have been introduced for the environmentally benign and efficient reduction and one-pot two-step reductive Schotten-Baumann-type acetylation of nitroarenes in water at 60 °C under an air atmosphere. It is worth noting that the NiII-containing hybrid nanocatalyst, in the mentioned organic reactions, showed short reaction times, high yields of the desired products, acceptable turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs), and also satisfactory magnetic recycling and reusability performance even after ten times of reuse. As another significant point, all the titled organic transformations have been carried out in water as an entirely favorable and green solvent for chemical reactions.

Redox-Responsive Halogen Bonding as a Highly Selective Interaction for Electrochemical Separations

Leveraging specific noncovalent interactions can broaden the mechanims for selective electrochemical separations beyond solely electrostatic interactions. Here, we explore redox-responsive halogen bonding (XB) for selective electrosorption in nonaqueous media, by taking advantage of directional interactions of XB alongisde a cooperative and synergistic ferrocene redox-center. We designed and evaluated a new redox-active XB donor polymer, poly(5-iodo-4-ferrocenyl-1-(4-vinylbenzyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole) (P(FcTS-I)), for the electrochemically switchable binding and release of target organic and inorganic ions at a heterogeneous interface. Under applied potential, the oxidized ferrocene amplifies the halogen binding site, leading to significantly enhanced uptake and selectivity towards key inorganic and organic species, including chloride, bisulfate, and benzenesulfonate, compared to the open-circuit potential or the hydrogen bonding donor analog. Density functional theory calculations, as well as spectroscopic analysis, offer mechanistic insight into the degree of amplification of σ-holes at a molecular level, with selectivity modulated by charge transfer and dispersion interactions. Our work highlights the potential of XB in selective electrosorption by uniquely leveraging noncovalent interactions for redox-mediated electrochemical separations.

Extraction of polyphenols and essential oils from herbs with green extraction methods - An insightful review

The demand for polyphenols and essential oils (EOs) on the food market is high and grows every year. Its partially the result of the fact that these compounds can be used in formulation of clean label foods, a fast growing food sector. A significant share of polyphenols and EOs are extracted from herbs. The quality of the extracts is determined mainly by the extraction method. Conventional extraction techniques of phytochemicals are time-consuming, operate at high temperatures, and require usage of organic solvents and energy in large quantities. According to the United Nations Sustainability Development Plan, chemical processes should be replaced by green alternatives that would reduce the use of solvents and energy. Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction (UAE), Microwave-Assisted Extraction (MAE) and Cold Plasma-Assisted Extraction (CPAE) meets these criteria. The review shows that each of these techniques seems to be a great alternative for conventional extraction methods ensuring higher yields of bioactive compounds.

PhInd database - Polyphenol content in Agri-food by-products and trends in extraction technologies: A critical review

Sustainable Development Goal 12 and target 12.3 set by the United Nations aims to reduce"food waste" per capita global for 50% losses by 2030. Databases such as the PhInd could help us to achieve set goals via mapping the potential ways for valorization of polyphenols from the agri-food by-products and waste. Fruit by-products (73.2% of the PhInd entries) are the most studied sources of polyphenols and future studies might be more focused on vegetables. More than half (55.8%) of entries were evaluated polyphenols in samples created in laboratory. These samples could have significantly different composition from industrial samples. Solid-liquid extraction (53.5%) and solvents like water, ethanol and aqueous ethanol (51.5%) were the most often used for extraction of polyphenols. Green solvents as NADES (0.4%) are rarely used in studies and should be more explored.

Molecularly imprinted polymers in the analysis of chlorogenic acid: A review

Chlorogenic acid, a phenolic compound, is prevalent across various plant species and has been known for its pharmacological advantages. Health care experts have identified chlorogenic acid as a potential biomarker for treatment of a wide range of illnesses. Therefore, achieving efficient extraction and analysis of chlorogenic acid from plants and their products has become essential. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are highly effective adsorbent for the extraction of chlorogenic acid from complex matrices. Currently, there is a lack of comprehensive review article that consolidate the methods utilized for the purification of chlorogenic acid through molecular imprinting. In this context, we have surveyed the common approaches employed in preparing MIPs specifically designed for the analysis of chlorogenic acid, including both conventional and newly developed. This review discusses the advantages, limitations of polymerization techniques and proposed strategies to produce more efficient MIPs for chlorogenic acid enrichment in complex samples. Additionaly, we present advanced imprinting methods for designing MIPs, which improve the adsorption capacity, sensitivity and selectivity towards chlorogenic acid.

Photo-induced glycosylation using the edible polyphenol curcumin

Photo-induced glycosylations of trichloroacetimidate donors and alcohols using an edible polyphenol, curcumin, were examined under visible photo-irradiation (470 nm). It was found, for the first time, that these glycosylations proceed smoothly under mild reaction conditions to give the corresponding glycosides in high yields. In addition, the present glycosylation method was applicable to a wide range of trichloroacetimidate donors and alcohol acceptors and showed high chemoselectivity over glycosyl phosphite, phosphate, (N-phenyl)trifluoroacetimidate, fluoride, glycal and thioglycoside.

Viscosity effects on the dynamics of diols and diol-based deep eutectic solvents

Diols, characterized by the presence of two hydroxyl groups, form extended hydrogen-bonded networks. Increasing hydrocarbon chain length is known to elevate the viscosity of diols. Given the established influence of viscosity on solvent dynamics, it becomes imperative to comprehend the impact of viscosity on the fluctuation dynamics within diols and establish connections with hydrogen bond formation and breaking dynamics. In this study, we employ two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy to investigate the viscosity dependence of the structural evolution dynamics in three diols with varying chain lengths. Complementing our experimental approach, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to extract hydrogen bond lifetimes. Our findings reveal a linear correlation between bulk viscosity, solvent fluctuation timescales, and hydrogen bond lifetimes. Notably, the selected diols exhibit the capability to form deep eutectic solvents upon mixing with choline chloride at specific molar ratios. In contrast to molecular solvents like diols, deep eutectic solvents are characterized by the formation of heterogeneous nanodomains, comprising various intercomponent hydrogen-bonded networks. Interestingly, our observations indicate that while the fluctuation dynamics decelerate with increasing bulk viscosity in diol-based deep eutectic solvents, the relationship between viscosity and dynamics is not linear, in contrast to the observed linearity in diols. This nuanced understanding contributes to the broader comprehension of the interplay between viscosity and dynamics in both molecular and deep eutectic solvents.

Optimizing Drug Development: Harnessing the Sustainability of Pharmaceutical Cocrystals

Environmental impacts of the industrial revolution necessitate adoption of sustainable practices in all areas of development. The pharmaceutical industry faces increasing pressure to minimize its ecological footprint due to its significant contribution to environmental pollution. Over the past two decades, pharmaceutical cocrystals have received immense popularity due to their ability to optimize the critical attributes of active pharmaceutical ingredients and presented an avenue to bring improved drug products to the market. This review explores the potential of pharmaceutical cocrystals as an ecofriendly alternative to traditional solid forms, offering a sustainable approach to drug development. From reducing the number of required doses to improving the stability of actives, from eliminating synthetic operations to using pharmaceutically approved chemicals, from the use of continuous and solvent-free manufacturing methods to leveraging published data on the safety and toxicology, the cocrystallization approach contributes to sustainability of drug development. The latest trends suggest a promising role of pharmaceutical cocrystals in bringing novel and improved medicines to the market, which has been further fuelled by the recent guidance from the major regulatory agencies.

On the Moisture Absorption Capability of Ionic Liquids

Due to their many attractive physicochemical properties, ionic liquids (ILs) have received extensive attention with numerous applications proposed in various fields of science and technology. Despite this, the molecular origins of many of their properties, such as the moisture absorption capability, are still not well understood. For insight into this, we systematically synthesized 24 types of ILs by the combination of the dimethyl phosphate anion with various types of alkyl group-substituted cyclic cations─imidazolium, pyrazolium, 1,2,3-triazolium, and 1,2,4-triazolium cations─and performed a detailed analysis of the dehumidification properties of these ILs and their aqueous solutions. It was found that these IL systems have a high dehumidification capability (DC). Among the monocationic ILs, the best performance was obtained with 1-cyclohexylmethyl-4-methyl-1,2,4-triazolium dimethyl phosphate, whose DC (per mol) value is 14 times higher than that of popular solid desiccants like CaCl2 and silica gel. Dicationic ILs, such as 1,1'-(propane-1,3-diyl)bis(4-methyl-1,2,4-triazolium) bis(dimethyl phosphate), showed an even better moisture absorption, with a DC (per mol) value about 20 times higher than that of CaCl2. Small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements of eight types of 1,2,4-triazolium dimethyl phosphate ILs were performed and revealed that the majority of these ILs form nanostructures. Such nanostructures, which vary with the identity of the IL and the water content, fall into three main categories: bicontinuous microemulsions, hexagonal cylinders, and micelle-like structures. Water in the solutions exists primarily in polar regions in the nanostructures; these spaces function as water pockets at relatively low water concentrations. Since the structure and stability of the aggregated forms of the ILs are mainly governed by the interactions of nonpolar groups, the alkyl side chains of the cations play an important role in the DC and temperature-dependent equilibrium water vapor pressure of the IL solutions. Our experimental findings and molecular dynamics simulation results shed light on the moisture absorption mechanism of the IL aqueous solutions from a molecular perspective.

Advantages and drawbacks of life cycle assessment application to the pharmaceuticals: a short critical literature review

Pharmaceuticals are among the most challenging products to assess by life cycle assessment (LCA). The main drawback highlighted by LCA practitioners is the lack of inventory data, both regarding the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) precursors (upstream) and the details concerning the downstream phases (use and end of life). A short critical review of pharma-LCAs found in the literature is here proposed, with discussion of several tools and models used to predict the environmental impacts derived from the life cycle of pharmaceuticals, emphasizing current strengths and weaknesses, and exploring the possibilities for improvements. The case of antibiotics is selected as a representative class of pharmaceuticals, due to their massive use worldwide and the growing related issue of antimicrobial resistance enrichment, which is generally not included in most of LCAs. Also, we comment on drafting product category rules (PCRs) in the relevant field to develop standard methodologies and enhance the comparability of the studies, ultimately advocating collaboration with companies and improving inventory data quality and availability for the whole value chain of products.

Sustainable Synthesis of the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Atenolol in Deep Eutectic Solvents

Atenolol, one of the top five best-selling drugs in the world today used to treat angina and hypertension, and to reduce the risk of death after a heart attack, faces challenges in current synthetic methods to address inefficiencies and environmental concerns. The traditional synthesis of this drug involves a process that generates a large amount of waste and other by-products that need disposal. This study presents a one-pot DES-based sustainable protocol for synthesizing atenolol. The use of the DES allowed the entire process to be conducted with no need for additional bases or catalysts, in short reaction times, under mild conditions, and avoiding chromatographic purification. The overall yield of atenolol was 95%. The scalability of the process to gram-scale production was successfully demonstrated, emphasizing its potential in industrial applications. Finally, the 'greenness' evaluation, performed using the First Pass CHEM21 Metrics Toolkit, highlighted the superiority in terms of the atom economy, the reaction mass efficiency, and the overall process mass intensity of the DES-based synthesis compared with the already existing methods.

Homogeneous Catalyzed Direct Conversion of Furfural to Gamma-Valerolactone

Herein, we report the direct conversion of biomass-derived furfural to γ-valerolactone (GVL) in a one-pot system, using the combination of Ru-MACHO-BH and a Brønsted acid (H3PO4). A GVL yield of 84 % is achieved under mild reaction conditions using 1 mol% of Ru-MACHO-BH and 3.8 M H3PO4(aq) at 100 °C for 7 hours.

Efficient Conversion of Glucose to Hydroxymethylfurfural: One-pot Brønsted Base and Acid Promoted Selective Isomerization and Dehydration

Development of elegant, selective, and efficient strategies for the production of value-added platform chemicals from renewable feedstocks are in high demand to achieve the future needs and sustainable goals. In this context, an efficient acid-promoted synthesis of highly valuable hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) has been demonstrated from glucose, a major constituent of lignocellulosic biomass. The major challenge in the conversion of glucose to HMF is the selective isomerization of glucose to ketose, which in the present work has been successfully addressed through the amine-mediated rearrangement of glucose to aminofructose under Amadori rearrangement. Importantly, subsequent dehydration step affords HMF and regenerates the amine employed in the first step, which could be readily recovered. In addition, scale-up and successful integration into one-pot synthesis of HMF proves the efficiency and applicability of the present transformation in large scale application. In addition, the method was also successfully extended to other monosaccharides and disaccharides to produce HMF.

Engineering a Dual-Functionalized PolyHIPE Resin for Photobiocatalytic Flow Chemistry

The use of a dual resin for photobiocatalysis, encompassing both a photocatalyst and an immobilized enzyme, brings several challenges, including effective immobilization, maintaining photocatalyst and enzyme activity and ensuring sufficient light penetration. However, the benefits, such as integrated processes, reusability, easier product separation, and potential for scalability, can outweigh these challenges, making dual resin systems promising for efficient and sustainable photobiocatalytic applications. In this study, we employed a photosensitizer-containing porous emulsion-templated polymer as a functional support that is used to covalently anchor a chloroperoxidase from Curvularia inaequalis (CiVCPO). We demonstrate the versatility of this heterogeneous photobiocatalytic material, which enables the bromination of four aromatic substrates, including rutin-a natural occurring flavonol-under blue light (456 nm) irradiation and continuous flow conditions.

Revisiting Biginelli-like reactions: solvent effects, mechanisms, biological applications and correction of several literature reports

This study critically reevaluates reported Biginelli-like reactions using a Kamlet-Abboud-Taft-based solvent effect model. Surprisingly, structural misassignments were discovered in certain multicomponent reactions, leading to the identification of pseudo three-component derivatives instead of the expected MCR adducts. Attempts to replicate literature conditions failed, prompting reconsideration of the described MCRs and proposed mechanisms. Electrospray ionization (tandem) mass spectrometry, NMR, melting points, elemental analyses and single-crystal X-ray analysis exposed inaccuracies in reported MCRs and allowed for the proposition of a complete catalytic cycle. Biological investigations using both pure and "contaminated" derivatives revealed distinctive features in assessed bioassays. A new cellular action mechanism was unveiled for a one obtained pseudo three-component adduct, suggesting similarity with the known dihydropyrimidinone Monastrol as Eg5 inhibitors, disrupting mitosis by forming monoastral mitotic spindles. Docking studies and RMSD analyses supported this hypothesis. The findings described herein underscore the necessity for a critical reexamination and potential corrections of structural assignments in several reports. This work emphasizes the significance of rigorous characterization and critical evaluation in synthetic chemistry, urging a careful reassessment of reported synthesis and biological activities associated with these compounds.

Heterogeneous Organocatalysts for Light-Driven Reactions in Continuous Flow

Within the realm of organic synthesis, photocatalysis has blossomed since the beginning of the last decade. A plethora of classical reactivities, such as selective oxidation of alcohol and amines, redox radical formation of reactive species in situ, and indirect activation of an organic substrate for cycloaddition by EnT, have been revised in a milder and more sustainable fashion via photocatalysis. However, even though the spark of creativity leads scientists to explore new reactions and reactivities, the urgency of replacing the toxic and critical metals that are involved as catalysts has encouraged chemists to find alternatives in the branch of science called organocatalysis. Unfortunately, replacing metal catalysts with organic analogues can be too expensive sometimes; however, this drawback can be solved by the reutilization of the catalyst if it is heterogeneous. The aim of this review is to present the recent works in the field of heterogeneous photocatalysis, applied to organic synthesis, enabled by continuous flow. In detail, among the heterogeneous catalysts, g-CN, polymeric photoactive materials, and supported molecular catalysts have been discussed within their specific sections, rather than focusing on the types of reactions.

Use of deep eutectic solvents in environmentally-friendly dye-sensitized solar cells and their physicochemical properties: a brief review

A novel way to mitigate the greenhouse effect is to use dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) to convert carbon dioxide from the air into useful products, such as hydrocarbons, which can also store energy from the sun, a plentiful, clean, and safe resource. The conversion of CO2 can help reduce the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. However, there is a major obstacle in using DSSCs, since many solar devices operate with organic electrolytes, producing pollutants including toxic substances. Therefore, a key research area is to find new eco-friendly electrolytes that can effectively dissolve carbon dioxide. One option is to use deep eutectic solvents (DESs), which are potential substitutes for ionic liquids (ILs) and have similar advantages, such as being customizable, economical, and environmentally friendly. DESs are composed of low-cost materials and have very low toxicity and high biodegradability, making them suitable for use as electrolytes in DSSCs, within the framework of green chemistry. The purpose of this brief review is to explore the existing knowledge about how CO2 dissolves in DESs and how these solvents can be used as electrolytes in solar devices, especially in DSSCs. The physical and chemical properties of the DESs are described, and areas are suggested where further research should be focused.

Rapid reaction optimization by robust and economical quantitative benchtop 19F NMR spectroscopy

The instrumental analysis of reaction mixtures is usually the rate-determining step in the optimization of chemical processes. Traditionally, reactions are analyzed by gas chromatography, HPLC or quantitative NMR spectroscopy on high-field spectrometers. However, chromatographic methods require elaborate work-up and calibration protocols, and high-field NMR spectrometers are expensive to purchase and operate. This protocol describes an inexpensive and highly effective analysis method based on low-field benchtop NMR spectroscopy. Its key feature is the use of fluorine-labeled model substrates that, because of the wide chemical shift range and high sensitivity of 19F, enable separate, quantitative detection of product and by-product signals even on low-field, permanent magnet spectrometers. An external lock/shim device obviates the need for deuterated solvents, permitting the direct, noninvasive measurement of crude reaction mixtures with minimal workup. The low field-strength facilitates a homogeneous excitation over a wide chemical shift range, minimizing systematic integration errors. The addition of the optimal amount of the nonshifting relaxation agent tris(acetylacetonato) iron(III) minimizes relaxation delays at full resolution, reducing the analysis time to 32 s per sample. The correct choice of processing parameters is also crucial. A step-by-step guideline is provided, the influence of all parameters, including adjustments needed when using high-field spectrometers, is discussed and potential pitfalls are highlighted. The wide applicability of the analytical protocol for reaction optimization is illustrated by three examples: a Buchwald-Hartwig amination, a Suzuki coupling and a C-H arylation reaction.

HFIP-mediated C-3-alkylation of indoles and synthesis of indolo[2,3-b]quinolines & related natural products

An expeditious metal free C-3 alkylation of indoles and its NIS-mediated deviation to indolo[2,3-b]quinolines is reported. This protocol, executed in aqueous HFIP has broad substrate scope and is well inclined towards the ideas of sustainable chemistry. Applications of these strategies in accessing bioactive natural products like vibrindole, norcryptotakeine, neocryptolepine and indenoindolone scaffolds has also been demonstrated.

A Multicomponent Mannich Reaction Catalyzed by Hydrolases Immobilized on Titanate Nanotubes

This study presents an innovative method for synthesizing β-amino carbonylated compounds, specifically 2-[phenyl(phenylamino)methyl] cyclohexanone, achieving high conversions and diastereomeric ratios. Using trypsin or α-chymotrypsin in both free and immobilized forms on titanate nanotubes (NtsTi), synthesized through alkaline hydrothermal methods, successful immobilization yields were attained. Notably, α-chymotrypsin, when free, displayed a diastereoselective synthesis of the anti-isomer with 97 % conversion and 16 : 84 (syn : anti) diastereomeric ratio, which slightly decreased upon immobilization on NtsTi. Trypsin, in its free form, exhibited diastereoselective recognition of the syn-isomer, while immobilization on NtsTi (trypsin/NtsTi) led to an inversion of diastereomeric ratio. Both trypsin/NtsTi and α-chymotrypsin/NtsTi demonstrated significant catalytic efficiency over five cycles. In conclusion, NtsTi serves as an effective support for trypsin and α-chymotrypsin immobilization, presenting promising prospects for diastereoselective synthesis and potential industrial applications. Furthermore, it offers promising prospects for the diastereoselective synthesis of 2-[phenyl(phenylamino)methyl] cyclohexanone through multicomponent Mannich reaction and future industrial application.

Corrosion inhibition activity of a natural polysaccharide from Dysosma versipellis using tailor-made deep eutectic solvents

In this work, a total of 18 types of choline chloride, betaine, and L-proline-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were synthesized to determine the extraction yield of a natural polysaccharide (PSA) from Dysosma versipellis using an ultrasound-assisted extraction method. Results indicate that the choline-oxalic acid-based DES has the best extraction yield for PSA due to the proper physical-chemical properties between PSA and DES. To evaluate the optimal extraction conditions, a response surface methodology was carried out. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction yield of PSA reaches 10.37 % (± 0.03 %), higher than the conventional extraction methods. Findings from FT-IR and NMR suggest that the extracted PSA belongs to a neutral polysaccharide with (1 → 6)-linked α-d-glucopyranose in the main chain. Interestingly, results from various electrochemical measurements show the extracted PSA exhibits excellent corrosion inhibition performance for mild steel (MS) in a 0.5 M HCl solution, with 90.8 % of maximum corrosion inhibition efficiency at 210 mg L-1. SEM and XPS measurements reveal the formation of a protective layer on the MS surface. The adsorption behaviour of extracted PSA well obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm containing the chemisorption and physisorption. Additionally, theoretical calculations validate the experimental findings.

Revisiting poly(vinyl chloride) reactivity in the context of chemical recycling

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) is one of the highest production volume polymers due to its many applications, and it is one of the least recycled due to its chemical structure and frequent formulation with additives. Developing efficient PVC recycling techniques would enable PVC waste to be reused or repurposed in other processes. Within this context, the literature on PVC modification offers considerable insight into versatile reaction pathways, potentially inspiring new approaches for repurposing PVC waste into value-added products. This perspective provides an overview of PVC functionalization through a lens of chemical recycling, discussing various PVC reactivity trends and their applications with a critical assessment and future outlook of their recycling implications.

Electromagnetic Mill-Promoted Palladium-Catalyzed Heck-Type Cyclization/Decarboxylative Coupling of (Z)-1-Iodo-1,6-diene with Propiolic Acids

Electromagnetic mill (EMM)-promoted solid-state cascade Heck-type cyclization/decarboxylative coupling of propiolic acid with (Z)-1-iodo-1,6-diene derivate was demonstrated. The reaction was realized via palladium catalysis, which is solvent-free and involves no additional heating. The collision between ferromagnetic rods could not only be a favor to the mixing between the solid substrates and the catalyst system, but also the thermogenic action could accelerate this transformation. More importantly, this EMM strategy realized multiple bond construction under mechanochemical conditions in one pot.

A Versatile, Functional Group-Tolerant, and Bench-Stable Iron Precatalyst for Building Arene and Triazine Rings by [2+2+2] Cycloadditions

We report an efficient iron-catalyzed cycloaddition procedure leading to the construction of (hetero)aromatic rings by alkyne [2+2+2] cycloisomerization. This method relies on the use of an air-stable (N,N)Fe(II) precursor easily prepared from a commercially available ligand derived from 1,10-phenanthroline, reduced in situ into a catalytically active non-innocent (N,N ⋅-)2Fe(II) species. This system displays a large scope application, operates under mild conditions and at low catalytic charges (25 cycloadducts formed, up to 1.5 mol% catalyst). Moreover, this method also enables access to 29 cycloadducts by cross-cycloisomerization between 1,6- or 1,7-diynes and alkynes in near-equimolar conditions. 1,3,5-Triazines can also be prepared with this procedure starting from the corresponding cyanamides. Scale-up reactions and post-functionalization of several cycloadducts also show that this [2+2+2] cycloaddition can be used in multistep sequences.

Design and Discovery of Water-Soluble Benzooxaphosphole-Based Ligands for Hindered Suzuki-Miyaura Coupling Reactions with Low Catalyst Load

We report a new class of highly effective, benzooxaphosphole-based, water-soluble ligands in the application of Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions for sterically hindered substrates in aqueous media. The catalytic activities of the coupling reactions were greatly enhanced by the addition of catalytic amounts of organic phase transfer reagents, such as tetraglyme and tetrabutylammonium bromide. The optimized general protocol can be conducted with a low catalyst load, thereby providing a practical solution for these reactions. The viability of this new Suzuki-Miyaura protocol was demonstrated with various substrates to generate important building blocks, including heterocycles, for the synthesis of biologically active compounds.

Solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds over Co single atoms decorated on Nb2O5 nanomeshes

The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of nitroaromatics to azoxy compounds is highly important, yet challenging. Herein, we report an efficient strategy to construct individually dispersed Co atoms decorated on niobium pentaoxide nanomeshes with unique geometric and electronic properties. The use of this supported Co single atom catalysts in the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene results in high catalytic activity and selectivity, with 99% selectivity and 99% conversion within 0.5 h. Remarkably, it delivers an exceptionally high turnover frequency of 40377 h-1, which is amongst similar state-of-the-art catalysts. In addition, it demonstrates remarkable recyclability, reaction scalability, and wide substrate scope. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the catalytic activity and selectivity are significantly promoted by the unique electronic properties and strong electronic metal-support interaction in Co1/Nb2O5. The absence of precious metals, toxic solvents, and reagents makes this catalyst more appealing for synthesizing azoxy compounds from nitroaromatics. Our findings suggest the great potential of this strategy to access single atom catalysts with boosted activity and selectivity, thus offering blueprints for the design of nanomaterials for organocatalysis.

Ionic Conductivity of a Lithium-Doped Deep Eutectic Solvent: Glass Formation and Rotation-Translation Coupling

Deep eutectic solvents with admixed lithium salts are considered as electrolytes in electrochemical devices, such as batteries or supercapacitors. Compared to eutectic mixtures of hydrogen-bond donors and lithium salts, their raw-material costs are significantly lower. Not much is known about glassy freezing and rotational-translation coupling of such systems. Here, we investigate these phenomena by applying dielectric spectroscopy to the widely studied deep eutectic solvent glyceline, to which 1 and 5 mol % LiCl were added. Our study covers a wide temperature range, including a deeply supercooled state. The temperature dependences of the detected dipolar reorientation dynamics and ionic direct current (dc) conductivity reveal the signatures of glassy freezing. In comparison to pure glyceline, the lithium admixture leads to a reduction of ionic conductivity, which is accompanied by a reduction of the rotational dipolar mobility. However, this reduction is much smaller than that for deep eutectic solvents (DESs), where one main component is lithium salt, which we trace back to the lower glass-transition temperatures of lithium-doped DESs. In contrast to pure glyceline, the ionic and dipolar dynamics become increasingly decoupled at low temperatures and obey a fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein relation, as previously found in other glass-forming liquids. The obtained results demonstrate the relevance of decoupling effects and glass transition to the enhancement of the technically relevant ionic conductivity in such lithium-doped DESs.

New horizons on advanced nanoscale materials for Cultural Heritage conservation

Nanomaterials have permeated numerous scientific and technological fields, and have gained growing importance over the past decades also in the preservation of Cultural Heritage. After a critical overview of the main nanomaterials adopted in art preservation, we provide new insights into some highly relevant gels, which constitute valuable tools to selectively remove dirt or other unwanted layers from the surface of works of art. In particular, the recent "twin-chain" gels, obtained by phase separation of two different PVAs and freeze-thawing, were considered as the most performing gel systems for the cleaning of Cultural Heritage. Three factors are crucial in determining the final gel properties, i.e., pore size, pore connectivity, and surface roughness, which belong to the micro/nanodomain. The pore size is affected by the molecular weight of the phase-separating PVA polymer, while pore connectivity and tortuosity likely depend on interconnections formed during gelation. Tortuosity greatly impacts on cleaning capability, as the removal of matter at the gel-target interface increases with the uploaded fluid's residence time at the interface (higher tortuosity produces longer residence). The gels' surface roughness, adaptability and stickiness can also be controlled by modulating the porogen amount or adding different polymers to PVA. Finally, PVA can be partially replaced with different biopolymers yielding gels with enhanced sustainability and effective cleaning capability, where the selection of the biopolymer affects the gel porosity and effectiveness. These results shed new light on the effect of micro/nanoscale features on the cleaning performances of "twin-chain" and composite gels, opening new horizons for advanced and "green"/sustainable gel materials that can impact on fields even beyond art preservation, like drug-delivery, detergency, food industry, cosmetics and tissue engineering.

Investigating the efficacy of green solvents and solvent-free conditions in hydrogen-bonding mediated organocatalyzed model reactions

In this study, we have delved into various reactions conducted using green solvents or under solvent-free conditions, employing hydrogen bonding organocatalysis to advance more sustainable practices in chemical synthesis. The outcomes suggest that cyclopentyl methyl ether could potentially replace non-polar organic solvents such as hexane and toluene with comparable enantioselectivity and yields. The non-polar nature of liquefied or supercritical CO2 restricts its application to reactions that require non-polar solvents. Furthermore, pursuing solvent-free conditions, even without liquid substrates, might result in similar conversion rates with reduced catalyst loading. These findings highlight the potential of exploring solvent-free conditions when enantioselectivity is not of concern. Based on the results, solvent-free conditions and bio-based solvents can serve as viable alternatives to conventional organic solvents without compromising performance. This is expected to influence the way chemists approach reaction optimisation within method development in the field, fostering a broader adoption of environmentally friendly approaches.

An enhanced stereoselective synthesis of α,β-unsaturated esters through the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction in deep eutectic solvents

A new scalable synthesis of (E)-α,β-unsaturated esters has been developed using protic, non-toxic, and biodegradable deep eutectic solvents through the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reaction between triethyl phosphonates and (hetero)aromatic carbonyl compounds, encompassing electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups. Stereoselective preparation of disubstituted or trisubstituted ethyl cinnamate derivatives is achieved in the presence of LiOH, K2CO3, or DBU as bases, at room temperature and under air. Demonstrated with the synthesis of (E)-ethyl 3-(4-bromophenyl)acrylate, the same eutectic mixture (choline chloride/urea) proved to be reusable for three consecutive runs. Gram-scale reactions (10 mmol) can be carried out without the formation of side products, thereby ensuring high atom economy and an EcoScale score of 71.

Process Simulation and Optimization on Ionic Liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are promising alternative compounds that enable the development of technologies based on their unique properties as solvents or catalysts. These technologies require integrated product and process designs to select ILs with optimal process performances at an industrial scale to promote cost-effective and sustainable technologies. The digital era and multiscale research methodologies have changed the paradigm from experiment-oriented to hybrid experimental-computational developments guided by process engineering. This Review summarizes the relevant contributions (>300 research papers) of process simulations to advance IL-based technology developments by guiding experimental research efforts and enhancing industrial transferability. Robust simulation methodologies, mostly based on predictive COSMO-SAC/RS and UNIFAC models in Aspen Plus software, were applied to analyze key IL applications: physical and chemical CO2 capture, CO2 conversion, gas separation, liquid-liquid extraction, extractive distillation, refrigeration cycles, and biorefinery. The contributions concern the IL selection criteria, operational unit design, equipment sizing, technoeconomic and environmental analyses, and process optimization to promote the competitiveness of the proposed IL-based technologies. Process simulation revealed that multiscale research strategies enable advancement in the technological development of IL applications by focusing research efforts to overcome the limitations and exploit the excellent properties of ILs.

Environmental Sustainability of π-Electron Donor-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents for Toluene Absorption: A Life-Cycle Perspective

The novel π-electron donor-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been shown to be a promising type of absorbent with excellent performance on toluene absorption. However, their greenness or sustainability is still unclear. Thus, to bridge the gap and give a comprehensive evaluation for their industrialization potential, the life cycle assessment (LCA) was used to evaluate the potential environmental impacts incurred from their production and usage for absorbing toluene. The environmental profiles are also compared with that of popular choline chloride (ChCl) based DES, common organic solvent triethylene glycol (TEG) and ionic liquid ([EMIM][Tf2 N]). The results indicate that among the involved hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs), TEBAC generally imparts lower environmental impacts than other HBAs but has higher impacts than ChCl. Although TEBAC-PhOH is not the most environmentally friendly absorbent during the production stage, its outstanding absorption performance minimizes the environmental impact when absorbing the same mass of toluene. Furthermore, the environmental impacts of the toluene absorption process using TEBAC-PhOH is significantly lower than that of [EMIM][Tf2 N], slightly lower than TEG. Therefore, considering both absorption performance and environmental impacts, TEBAC-PhOH can be used as a promising "green and sustainable" toluene absorbent to traditional absorbents and ionic liquids.

Selective Hydrofunctionalization of N-Allenyl Derivatives with Heteronucleophiles Catalyzed by Brønsted Acids

In this study, we present a novel and environmentally sustainable protocol for the γ-hydrofunctionalization of N-allenyl compounds using various heteronucleophiles catalyzed solely by simple Brønsted acids. The method displays remarkable attributes, highlighting its sustainability, efficiency, regio- and stereoselectivity, as well as its versatile applicability to diverse heteroatom-containing enamides. Notably, our approach eliminates the need for metal catalysts and toxic solvents, representing a significant advancement in greener chemistry practices. We demonstrate the broad scope of our protocol by successfully scaling up reactions to gram-scale syntheses, underscoring its robustness for potential industrial implementation. The resulting γ-heterosubstituted enamides offer new possibilities for further synthetic transformations, yielding highly functionalized compounds with diverse applications. Mechanistic investigations reveal the pivotal role of CSA as a catalyst, enabling alcohol addition via a covalent activation mode.

Estimating the phase diagrams of deep eutectic solvents within an extensive chemical space

Assessing the formation of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) necessitates a solid-liquid equilibrium phase diagram. Yet, many studies focusing on DES applications do not include this diagram because of challenges in measurement, leading to misidentified eutectic points. The present study provides a practical approach for estimating the phase diagram of any binary mixture from the structural information, utilizing machine learning and quantum chemical techniques. The selected machine learning model provides reasonably high accuracy in predicting melting point (R2 = 0.84; RMSE = 40.53 K) and fusion enthalpy (R2 = 0.84; RMSE = 4.96 kJ mol-1) of pure compounds upon evaluation by test data. By pinpointing the eutectic point coordinates within an extensive chemical space, we highlighted the impact of the mole fractions and melting properties on the eutectic temperatures. Molecular dynamics simulations of selected mixtures at the eutectic points emphasized the pivotal role of hydrogen bonds in dictating mixture behavior.

Rotational dynamics, ionic conductivity, and glass formation in a ZnCl2-based deep eutectic solvent

Glass formation and reorientational motions are widespread but often-neglected features of deep eutectic solvents although both can be relevant for the technically important ionic conductivity at room temperature. Here, we investigate these properties for two mixtures of ethylene glycol and ZnCl2, which were recently considered superior electrolyte materials for application in zinc-ion batteries. For this purpose, we employed dielectric spectroscopy performed in a broad temperature range, extending from the supercooled state at low temperatures up to the liquid phase around room temperature and beyond. We find evidence for a relaxation process arising from dipolar reorientation dynamics, which reveals the clear signatures of glassy freezing. This freezing also governs the temperature dependence of the ionic dc conductivity. We compare the obtained results with those for deep eutectic solvents that are formed by the same hydrogen-bond donor, ethylene glycol, but by two different salts, choline chloride and lithium triflate. The four materials reveal significantly different ionic and reorientational dynamics. Moreover, we find varying degrees of decoupling of rotational dipolar and translational ionic motions, which can partly be described by a fractional Debye-Stokes-Einstein relation. The typical glass-forming properties of these solvents strongly affect their room-temperature conductivity.

Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Insights into 2-Ethylhexyl Laurate: A Remarkable Bioester

Commercial (protiated) samples of the "green" and biodegradable bioester 2-ethylhexyl laurate (2-EHL) were mixed with D-2-EHL synthesized by hydrothermal deuteration, with the mixtures demonstrating bulk structuring in small-angle neutron scattering measurements. Analysis in a polymer scattering framework yielded a radius of gyration (Rg) of 6.5 Å and a Kuhn length (alternatively described as the persistence length or average segment length) of 11.2 Å. Samples of 2-EHL dispersed in acetonitrile formed self-assembled structures exceeding the molecular dimensions of the 2-EHL, with a mean aggregation number (Nagg) of 3.5 ± 0.2 molecules across the tested concentrations. We therefore present structural evidence that this ester can function as a nonionic (co)surfactant. The available surfactant-like conformations appear to enable performance beyond the low calculated hydrophilic-lipophilic balance value of 2.9. Overall, our data offer an explanation for 2-EHL's interfacial adsorption properties via self-assembly, resulting in strong emolliency and lubricity for this sustainable ester-based bio-oil.

Deep eutectic solvents for the determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals

The harmful effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) to humans and other organisms in the environment have been well established over the years, and more studies are ongoing to classify other chemicals that have the potential to alter or disrupt the regular function of the endocrine system. In addition to toxicological studies, analytical detection systems are progressively being improved to facilitate accurate determination of EDCs in biological, environmental and food samples. Recent microextraction methods have focused on the use of green chemicals that are safe for analytical applications, and present very low or no toxicity upon disposal. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have emerged as one of the viable alternatives to the conventional hazardous solvents, and their unique properties make them very useful in different applications. Notably, the use of renewable sources to prepare DESs leads to highly biodegradable products that mitigate negative ecological impacts. This review presents an overview of both organic and inorganic EDCs and their ramifications on human health. It also presents the fundamental principles of liquid phase and solid phase microextraction methods, and gives a comprehensive account of the use of DESs for the determination of EDCs in various samples.

Preparation, characterization, and application of waterborne lignin-based epoxy resin as eco-friendly wood adhesive

A series of novel waterborne lignin-based epoxy resin emulsions (WLEPs) were successfully synthesized, and then the WLEPs were cured with polyamide (PA) to give formaldehyde-free wood adhesives with high-performance. The chemical structures and properties of WLEP emulsions were determined. The effects of the emulsifiers on thermal and mechanical properties of the adhesives were investigated, and the potential application of WLEPs in the formulation of plywood were also evaluated. The results demonstrated that the WLEP dispersions presented excellent storage stability (>180 days) with their viscosities range from 110 mPa·s to 470 mPa·s and particle sizes in the range of 321-696 nm, which were beneficial for the fluidity and permeability of the wood adhesives. Furthermore, the thermal and mechanical properties of adhesives could be tuned effectively by controlling the length of PEG chains. The adhesive bearing PEG 6000 exhibited the highest tensile strength of 24.0 MPa and Young's modulus of 1439 MPa. Notably, the plywood prepared with the resulting adhesives displayed good bonding performance, especially water resistance, which were much higher than the national standard requirement for exterior-grade plywood type I. These results indicated that the WLEPs could be used as sustainable alternatives for traditional formaldehyde-based wood adhesives in practical applications.

A Sustainable Extraction Approach of Phytochemicals from Date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) Fruit Cultivars Using Ultrasound-Assisted Deep Eutectic Solvent: A Comprehensive Study on Bioactivity and Phenolic Variability

The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) on the extraction of phytochemicals from eight Algerian date fruit cultivars (Phoenix dactylifera L.). In this study, lactic acid/sucrose-based NADESs were used as an alternative to conventional chemical solvents using the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method. The obtained extracts were assessed for the determination of bioactive compound contents, phenolic composition, antioxidant activity, and enzyme inhibitory potential. The results showed a considerable variation in phytochemical compositions and related activities between cultivars, where the greatest contents of total phenolics (1288.7 mg GAE/100 g), total flavonoids (53.8 mg QE/100 g), proanthocyanidins (179.5 mg CE/g), and total triterpenoids (12.88 mg OAE/100 g) were detected in the fruits of the Ourous cultivar. The same cultivar displayed the highest antioxidant capacity against DPPH• free radical (595 mg AAE/100 g), ABTS•+ cation radical (839 mg TE/100 g), and ferric reducing antioxidant potential (704 mg AAE/100 g). All extracts manifested moderate antioxidant activities tested by phosphomolybdenum, NO•, and linoleic acid lipid peroxidation assays. These extracts also exhibited interesting levels of in vitro enzyme inhibition; the Ourous cultivar gave the best inhibitory activity against α-amylase and acetylcholinesterase with 45 and 37%, respectively. HPLC-DAD-MS detected a total of five compounds, with phenolic acids and flavonoids being the main phenolics identified in the extract. The phenolic composition exhibited significant variability among cultivars. Notably, the highest amounts were revealed in the Tazizaout cultivar, with the predominance of gallic acid. The results confirmed that the combination of UAE and NADESs provides a novel and important alternative to chemical solvents for sustainable and environmentally friendly extraction and can represent a good alternative in food and pharmaceutical industry applications.

Sulfonated magnetic spirulina nanobiomaterial as a novel and environmentally friendly catalyst for the synthesis of dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones in aqueous medium

Spirulina algae is an excellent candidate for catalyst preparation due to its reactive functional groups, cost-effectiveness, widespread commercial accessibility, and biodegradability. In this study, magnetized Spirulina was used for the synthesis of dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones (DHQZs) as catalyst. Magnetized Spirulina was produced by CoFe2O4 and sulfonation method using chlorosulfonic acid to create the catalyst [CoFe2O4-Sp-SO3H]. It was affirmed by various techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and elemental mapping techniques. DHQZs synthesis was accomplished through a concise one-pot, three-component reaction involving a range of diverse aldehydes, isatoic anhydride, and primary aromatic amine, within an aqueous medium. The method offers several advantages, including using green conditions, the generation of several new 2-furan-quinazolinone derivatives, chromatography-free purification, short reaction times, appropriate yield of product (75-96%), and catalyst recyclability. The proposed catalyst and water as solvent demonstrated a strong synergistic effect, leading to the prosperous synthesis of various novel dihydroquinazolinones at 60 °C. These numerous benefits make our approach highly attractive for academic research and industrial applications.

Application of an Oscillatory Plug Flow Reactor to Enable Scalable and Fast Reactions in Water Using a Biomass-Based Polymeric Additive

The utilization of water as a sustainable reaction medium has important advantages over traditional organic solvents. Hydroxypropyl methylcellulose has emerged as a biomass-based polymeric additive that enables organic reactions in water through hydrophobic effects. However, such conditions imply slurries as reaction mixtures, where the efficacy of mass transfer and mixing decreases with increasing vessel size. In order to circumvent this limitation and establish an effectively scalable platform for performing hydroxypropyl methylcellulose-mediated aqueous transformations, we utilized oscillatory plug flow reactors that feature a smart dimensioning design principle across different scales. Using nucleophilic aromatic substitutions as valuable model reactions, rapid parameter optimization was performed first in a small-scale instrument having an internal channel volume of 5 mL. The optimal conditions were then directly transferred to a 15 mL reactor, achieving a three-fold scale-up without re-optimizing any reaction parameters. By precisely fine-tuning the oscillation parameters, the system achieved optimal homogeneous suspension of solids, preventing settling of particles and clogging of process channels. Ultimately, this resulted in a robust and scalable platform for performing multiphasic reactions under aqueous conditions.

Highly selective pressure-dependent (transfer) hydrogenative depolymerization of polybutylene succinate

Ru-MACHO®-BH is an effective catalyst for controlled depolymerization of polybutylene succinate. Under low pressure hydrogen the catalyst produces gamma-butyrolactone via a novel transfer hydrogenation wherein dehydrogenation and hydrogenation deconstruct the polymer chain. Simply increasing the hydrogen pressure selectively generates 1,4-butanediol.

A Multistep, Multicomponent Extraction and Separation Microfluidic Route to Recycle Water-Miscible Ionic Liquid Solvents

Recycling ionic liquid (IL) solvents can reduce the lifecycle cost of these expensive solvents. Liquid-liquid extraction is the most straightforward approach to purify IL solvents and is typically performed with an immiscible washing agent (e.g., water). Herein, we describe a recycling route for water-miscible ILs in which direct recycling is usually challenging. We use hydrophobic ILs as accommodating agents to draw the water-miscible IL from the aqueous washing stream. A biphasic slug flow of the mixed ILs and water is then separated by using a membrane. The water-miscible IL can then be drawn out from the mixed IL phase with acidified water and dried under vacuum. Both the water-miscible IL and the accommodating agent are then recycled. Here, we demonstrated a proof-of-concept of this process by recycling 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate (BMIM-OTf) in the presence of the accommodating agent 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIM-NTf2) and acidified water. We then demonstrated the capacity to recycle 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium triflate (BMPYRR-OTf) from a realistic synthetic application: Pt nanoparticle synthesis in the water-miscible IL.

Experimental and in silico insights: interaction of dimethyl sulphoxide with 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide/1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide at different temperatures

Ionic liquids have gained attention as 'designer solvents' since they offer a broad spectrum of properties that can be tuned by altering the constituent ions. In this work, 1-alkyl-2-methyl imidazolium-based ionic liquids with two different alkyl chains (alkyl = hexyl and octyl) have been synthesized and characterized. Since the binary mixture of ionic liquids with molecular solvents can give rise to striking physicochemical properties, the interaction of the synthesized room temperature ionic liquids, 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide [HMIM][Br]/1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide [OMIM][Br] with DMSO has been examined through density and specific conductance at T = (303.15, 308.15, 313.15 and 318.15) K under atmospheric pressure. The obtained molar volume and excess molar volume are fitted to the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation, and the standard deviation is noted. The positive excess molar volume at elevated temperatures indicates volume expansion due to the mutual loss of dipolar association and differences in the sizes and shapes of the constituent molecules. To have a better understanding of the reactivity and efficacy of 1-hexyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide and 1-octyl-2-methyl imidazolium bromide with DMSO, the Becke, 3-parameter, Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) correlation function of density functional theory (DFT) has been used. The ORCA Program version 4.0 calculates the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy. The effective reactivities of both the compounds that showed an energy band gap (ΔE), i.e., the difference between ELUMO and EHOMO, are 7.147 and 8.037 kcal mol-1.
