COF-based membranes for liquid phase separation: Preparation, mechanism and perspective

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new kind of crystalline porous materials composed of organic molecules connected by covalent bonds, processes the characteristics of low density, large specific surface area, adjustable pore size and structure, and easy to functionalize, which have been widely used in the field of membrane separation technology. Recently, there are more and more researches focusing on the preparation methods, separation application, and mechanism of COF membranes, which need to be further summarized and compared. In this review, we primarily summarized several conventional preparation methods, such as two-phase interfacial polymerization, in-situ growth on substrate, unidirectional diffusion method, layer-by-layer assembly method, mixed matrix membranes, and so on. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are briefly summarized. The application potential of COF membrane in liquid separation are introduced from four aspects: dyeing wastewater treatment, heavy metal removal, seawater desalination and oil-water separation. Then, the mechanisms including pore structure, hydrophilic/hydrophobic, electrostatic repulsion/attraction and Donnan effect are introduced. For the efficient removal of different kind of pollutions, researchers can select different ligands to construct membranes with specific pore size, hydrophily, salt or organic rejection ability and functional group. The ideas for the design and preparation of COF membranes are introduced. Finally, the future direction and challenges of the next generation of COF membranes in the field of separation are prospected.

Engineered Nanoporous Frameworks for Adsorption Cooling Applications

The energy demand for traditional vapor-compressed technology for space cooling continues to soar year after year due to global warming and the increasing human population's need to improve living and working conditions. Thus, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly technologies that use sustainable or waste energy resources. This review discusses the properties of various refrigerants used for adsorption cooling applications followed by a brief discussion on the thermodynamic cycle. Next, sorbents traditionally used for cooling are reviewed to emphasize the need for advanced capture materials with superior properties to improve refrigerant sorption. The remainder of the review focus on studies using engineered nanoporous frameworks (ENFs) with various refrigerants for adsorption cooling applications. The effects of the various factors that play a role in ENF-refrigerant pair selection, including pore structure/dimension/shape, morphology, open-metal sites, pore chemistry and possible presence of defects, are reviewed. Next, in-depth insights into the sorbent-refrigerant interaction, and pore filling mechanism gained through a combination of characterization techniques and computational modeling are discussed. Finally, we outline the challenges and opportunities related to using ENFs for adsorption cooling applications and provide our views on the future of this technology.

Tuning Electron Delocalization of Redox-Active Porous Aromatic Framework for Low-Temperature Aqueous Zn-K Hybrid Batteries with Air Self-Chargeability

Air self-charging aqueous batteries promise to integrate energy harvesting technology and battery systems, potentially overcoming a heavy reliance on energy and the spatiotemporal environment. However, the exploitation of multifunctional air self-charging battery systems using promising cathode materials and suitable charge carriers remains challenging. Herein, for the first time, we developed low-temperature self-charging aqueous Zn-K hybrid ion batteries (AZKHBs) using a fully conjugated hexaazanonaphthalene (HATN)-based porous aromatic framework as the cathode material, exhibiting redox chemistry using K+ as charge carriers, and regulating Zn-ion solvation chemistry to guide uniform Zn plating/stripping. The unique AZKHBs exhibit the exceptional electrochemical properties in all-climate conditions. Most importantly, the large potential difference causes the AZKHBs discharged cathode to be oxidized using oxygen, thereby initiating a self-charging process in the absence of an external power source. Impressively, the air self-charging AZKHBs can achieve a maximum voltage of 1.15 V, an impressive discharge capacity (466.3 mAh g-1), and exceptional self-charging performance even at -40 °C. Therefore, the development of self-charging AZKHBs offers a solution to the limitations imposed by the absence of a power grid in harsh environments or remote areas.

Donor-acceptor type triphenylamine-based porous aromatic frameworks (TPA-PAFs) for photosynthesis of benzimidazoles

The development of efficient and recyclable photocatalysts for organic synthesis is of great interest. This study presents the synthesis of triphenylamine-based porous aromatic frameworks (TPA-PAFs) in an alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) manner. The light absorption range and the optical band gaps of TPA-PAFs are effectively tuned by changing the electron acceptor units, which further determine their photocatalytic properties. As a result, TPA-PAFs exhibit excellent catalytic performance for the photosynthesis of benzimidazoles in high yields (up to 99%), broad substrate scope (18 examples), and good recyclability (up to 10 cycles). This work provides a feasible approach toward the facile design and synthesis of efficient and stable PAF-based photocatalysts, which further broadens the application of PAFs catalytic materials in photocatalytic organic synthesis.

Preserving Mesoporosity in Type III Porous Liquids through Dual-layer Surface Weaving

The fundamental limitation for pore preservation in a Type III porous liquid (T3PL) is the need for a small aperture from the porous filler to realize size exclusion of a bulky solvent. We present a dual-layer surface weaving strategy that can disregard this limitation and achieve micro- and mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF)-based T3PLs even with apertures much larger than the solvent molecules. By first weaving a tight network of poly(tert-butyl methacrylate) on the MOF surface, the poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) solvent can be effectively excluded from the pores while smaller guest molecules such as CO2, C2H4, and H2O can freely access the interior, as confirmed by low-pressure adsorption isotherms. Further application of a PDMS-containing polymer coating helps lower the viscosity of the PL due to increased particle dispersibility. This strategy has resulted in the successful construction of T3PLs with aperture sizes up to 3.1 nm.

Orthogonal Photoswitching in a Porous Organic Framework

The development of photoresponsive systems with non-invasive orthogonal control by distinct wavelengths of light is still in its infancy. In particular, the design of photochemically triggered-orthogonal systems integrated into solid materials that enable multiple dynamic control over their properties remains a longstanding challenge. Here, we report the orthogonal and reversible control of two types of photoswitches in an integrated solid porous framework, that is, visible-light responsive o-fluoroazobenzene and nitro-spiropyran motifs. The properties of the constructed material can be selectively controlled by different wavelengths of light thus generating four distinct states providing a basis for dynamic multifunctional materials. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy demonstrated the selective transformation of the azobenzene switch in the bulk, which in turn modulates N2 and CO2 adsorption.

High Hydrogen Storage in Trigonal Prismatic Monomer-Based Highly Porous Aromatic Frameworks

Hydrogen storage is crucial in the shift toward a carbon-neutral society, where hydrogen serves as a pivotal renewable energy source. Utilizing porous materials can provide an efficient hydrogen storage solution, reducing tank pressures to manageable levels and circumventing the energy-intensive and costly current technological infrastructure. Herein, two highly porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs), C-PAF and Si-PAF, prepared through a Yamamoto C─C coupling reaction between trigonal prismatic monomers, are reported. These PAFs exhibit large pore volumes and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller areas, 3.93 cm3 g-1 and 4857 m2 g-1 for C-PAF, and 3.80 cm3 g-1 and 6099 m2 g-1 for Si-PAF, respectively. Si-PAF exhibits a record-high gravimetric hydrogen delivery capacity of 17.01 wt% and a superior volumetric capacity of 46.5 g L-1 under pressure-temperature swing adsorption conditions (77 K, 100 bar → 160 K, 5 bar), outperforming benchmark hydrogen storage materials. By virtue of the robust C─C covalent bond, both PAFs show impressive structural stabilities in harsh environments and unprecedented long-term durability. Computational modeling methods are employed to simulate and investigate the structural and adsorption properties of the PAFs. These results demonstrate that C-PAF and Si-PAF are promising materials for efficient hydrogen storage.

Ultrathin Free-Standing Porous Aromatic Framework Membranes for Efficient Anion Transport

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) show promising potential in anionic conduction due to their high stability and customizable functionality. However, the insolubility of most PAFs presents a significant challenge in their processing into membranes and subsequent applications. In this study, continuous PAF membranes with adjustable thickness were successfully created using liquid-solid interfacial polymerization. The rigid backbone and the stable C-C coupling endow PAF membrane with superior chemical and dimensional stabilities over most conventional polymer membranes. Different quaternary ammonium functionalities were anchored to the backbone through flexible alkyl chains with tunable length. The optimal PAF membrane exhibited an OH- conductivity of 356.6 mS ⋅ cm-1 at 80 °C and 98 % relative humidity. Additionally, the PAF membrane exhibited outstanding alkaline stability, retaining 95 % of its OH- conductivity after 1000 hours in 1 M NaOH. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of PAF materials in anion exchange membranes, achieving the highest OH- conductivity and exceptional chemical/dimensional stability. This work provides the possibility for the potential of PAF materials in anionic conductive membranes.

Highly Efficient Capture of Volatile Iodine by Conjugated Microporous Polymers Constructed Using Planar 3- and 4-Connected Organic Monomers

The effective capture and recovery of radioiodine species associated with nuclear fuel reprocessing is of significant importance in nuclear power plants. Porous materials have been proven to be one of the most effective adsorbents for the capture of radioiodine. In this work, we design and synthesize a series of conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), namely, TPDA-TFPB CMP, TPDA-TATBA CMP, and TPDA-TECHO CMP, which are constructed based on a planar rectangular 4-connected organic monomer and three triangular 3-connected organic monomers, respectively. The resultant CMPs are characterized using various characterization techniques and used as effective adsorbents for iodine capture. Our experiments indicated that the CMPs exhibit excellent iodine adsorption capacities as high as 6.48, 6.25, and 6.37 g g-1 at 348 K and ambient pressure. The adsorption mechanism was further investigated and the strong chemical adsorption between the iodine and the imine/tertiary ammonia of the CMPs, 3D network structure with accessible hierarchical pores, uniform micromorphology, wide π-conjugated structure, and high-density Lewis-base sites synergistically contribute to their excellent iodine adsorption performance. Moreover, the CMPs demonstrated good recyclability. This work provides guidance for the construction of novel iodine adsorbent materials with high efficiency in the nuclear power field.

Porous Aromatic Frameworks Enabling Polyiodide Confinement toward High Capacity and Long Lifespan Zinc-Iodine Batteries

Aqueous zinc-iodine batteries (AZIBs) are attracting increasing attention because of their high safety and abundance of resources. However, the performance of AZIBs is compromised by inadequate confinement of soluble polyiodides, the undesired shuttle effect, and slow reaction kinetics. In this study, a porous aromatic framework (PAF) with abundant benzene motifs and a well-organized pore structure is adopted as the iodine host, which exhibits high iodine adsorption capacity and robust polyiodide confinement. Both experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations indicate that the interactions between iodine species and the PAF-1 facilitate the redox reaction by coupling the electronic structures of the active species in the framework. A comparison of PAF-1, PAF-5, and PAF-11 also emphasizes the structural advantages of the high surface area and interconnected three-dimensional channels of PAF-1. Consequently, the I2@PAF-1 cathode can deliver a high capacity of 328 mAh g-1 at 0.5 C, outstanding rate performance, and a stable cycling life of 20 000 cycles (86 % retention at 10 C). The robust polyiodide confinement and superb electrochemical performance of Zn-I2@PAF-1 provide insights into the practical application of PAFs as excellent electrode materials for AZIBs.

Ionic Porous Aromatic Frameworks Embedding Polyoxometalates for Heterogeneous Catalysis

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) are highly promising functional porous solids known for their feasible amenability and extraordinary stability. When the framework was modified by ionic functional groups, these ionic PAFs (iPAFs) exhibited charged channels for adsorption, separation, and catalysis. However, the surface areas of ionic porous frameworks are usually lower than that of neutral frameworks, and their synthesis is limited by specific strategies and complex modification processes. To address these challenges, an intuitive route to construct ionic porous framework with high specific surface area was proposed. Herein, a multivariate ionic porous aromatic framework (MTV-iPAFs, named PAF-270) was synthesized using readily available building units with ionic functional groups through a multivariable synthesis strategy. PAF-270 exhibited hierarchical structure with the highest specific surface area among reported imidazolium-functionalized PAFs. Utilizing its physical and chemical properties, the availability for polyoxometalate loading and heterogeneous catalysis of PAF-270 were explored. PAF-270 exhibited a high adsorption capacity up to 50 % for both H3O40PW12 (HPW) and (NH4)5H6PV8Mo4O40 (V8). HPW@PAF-270 and V8@PAF-270 exhibited excellent catalytic abilities for oleic acid esterification and extractive oxidative desulfurization, respectively. Due to the stability of PAFs, these materials also showed remarkable resistance to temperature and pH changes. Overall, these results underscore the potential application of MTV-iPAFs as versatile functional porous materials.

Nanofibrous Porous Organic Polymers and Their Derivatives: From Synthesis to Applications

Engineering porous organic polymers (POPs) into 1D morphology holds significant promise for diverse applications due to their exceptional processability and increased surface contact for enhanced interactions with guest molecules. This article reviews the latest developments in nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives, encompassing porous organic polymer nanofibers, their composites, and POPs-derived carbon nanofibers. The review delves into the design and fabrication strategies, elucidates the formation mechanisms, explores their functional attributes, and highlights promising applications. The first section systematically outlines two primary fabrication approaches of nanofibrous POPs, i.e., direct bulk synthesis and electrospinning technology. Both routes are discussed and compared in terms of template utilization and post-treatments. Next, performance of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are reviewed for applications including water treatment, water/oil separation, gas adsorption, energy storage, heterogeneous catalysis, microwave absorption, and biomedical systems. Finally, highlighting existent challenges and offering future prospects of nanofibrous POPs and their derivatives are concluded.

Rationally Designed Cyclooctatetrathiophene-Based Porous Aromatic Frameworks (COTh-PAFs) for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Constructing stable and efficient photocatalysts for H2O2 production is of great importance and is challenging. In this study, the synthesis of three photoactive cyclooctatetrathiophene (COTh)-based porous aromatic frameworks (COTh-PAFs) in an alternating donor-acceptor (D-A) fashion is presented. In combination with a triazine-derived electron acceptor, PAF-363 exhibits high efficiency for the photosynthesis of H2O2 with production rates of 11733 μmol g-1 h-1(with sacrificial agent) and 3930 μmol g-1 h-1 (without sacrificial agent) from water and oxygen under visible light irradiation. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the charge transfer positions and the O2 adsorption sites in PAF-363 are both concentrated on COTh fragments, which facilitate the H2O2 production through the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. This work highlights that the rational design of COTh-PAFs with consideration of D-A direction, charge transfer positions, and O2 adsorption sites provides a feasible access to efficient H2O2 production photocatalysts.

Inhibiting Photo-Oxidation and Enhancing Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Water Oxidation over Covalent Organic Frameworks Through the Coordination of Cobalt with Bipyridine

Photocatalytic water splitting using covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is a promising approach for harnessing solar energy. However, challenges such as slow kinetic dynamics in the photocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and COFs' self-oxidation hinder its progress. In this study, an enamine-based COF coordinated is introduced with cobalt dichloride, CoCl2 (CoCl2-TpBPy). The coordination of cobalt ions with bipyridines in CoCl2-TpBPy enhances charge-carrier separation and migration, leading to effective photocatalytic OER. Under visible light irradiation, CoCl2-TpBPy achieves a notable OER rate of up to 1 mmol·g-1·h-1, surpassing the reported organic semiconductor analogs. Additionally, CoCl2-TpBPy shows minimal nitrogen evolution compared to TpBPy and ethanol-treated TpBPy (E-TpBPy), indicating cobalt plays a pivotal role in improving charge utilization and minimizing photo-oxidation. In situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses revealed that Co(IV) species are key to the high OER efficiency. This work highlights Co(IV) species in the efficient OER and inhibiting photo-oxidation of CoCl2-TpBPy.

Membranes with Molecular Gatekeepers for Efficient CO2 Capture and H2 Purification

The urgent need for CO2 capture and hydrogen energy has attracted great attention owing to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming problems. Efficient CO2 capture and H2 purification with membrane technology will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help reach a carbon-neutral society. Here, 4-sulfocalix[4]arene (SC), which has an intrinsic cavity, was embedded into the Matrimid membrane as a molecular gatekeeper for CO2 capture and H2 purification. The interactions between SC and the Matrimid polymer chains immobilize SC molecules into the interchain gaps of the Matrimid membrane, and the strong hydrogen and ionic bondings were able to form homogeneous mixed-matrix membranes. The incorporation of the SC molecular gatekeeper with exceptional molecular-sieving properties improved the gas separation performance of the mixed-matrix membranes. Compared with that of the Matrimid membrane, the CO2 permeability of the Matrimid-SC-3% membrane increased from 16.75 to 119.78 Barrer, the CO2/N2 selectivity increased from 29.39 to 106.95, and the CO2/CH4 selectivity increased from 29.91 to 140.92. Furthermore, when the permeability of H2 was increased to 172.20 Barrer, the H2/N2 and H2/CH4 selectivities reached approximately 153.75 and 202.59, respectively, which are far superior to those of most existing Matrimid-based materials. The mixed-matrix membranes also exhibited excellent long-term operation stability, with separation performance for several important gas pairs still overtaking the Robeson upper limit after aging for 400 days.

Thermodynamically Stable Functionalization of Microporous Aromatic Frameworks with Sulfonic Acid Groups by Inserting Methylene Spacers

Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) are an auspicious class of materials that allow for the introduction of sulfonic acid groups at the aromatic core units by post-synthetic modification. This makes PAFs promising for proton-exchange materials. However, the limited thermal stability of sulfonic acid groups attached to aromatic cores prevents high-temperature applications. Here, we present a framework based on PAF-303 where the acid groups were added as methylene sulfonic acid side chains in a two-step post-synthetic route (SMPAF-303) via the intermediate chloromethylene PAF (ClMPAF-303). Elemental analysis, NMR spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize both frameworks and corroborate the successful attachment of the side chains. The resulting framework SMPAF-303 features high thermal stability and an ion-exchange capacity of about 1.7 mequiv g-1. The proton conductivity depends strongly on the adsorbed water level. It reaches from about 10-7 S cm-1 for 33% RH to about 10-1 S cm-1 for 100% RH. We attribute the strong change to a locally alternating polarity of the inner surfaces. The latter introduces bottleneck effects for the water molecule and oxonium ion diffusion at lower relative humidities, due to electrolyte clustering. When the pores are completely filled with water, these bottlenecks vanish, leading to an unhindered electrolyte diffusion through the framework, explaining the conductivity rise.

Self-Assembled and Polymerized Hierarchical Nanostructure Films of Cyanostilbene-Based Reactive AIEgens for Smart Chemosensors

For the development of acid-responsive advanced fluorescent films with a 2D nanostructure, a pyridyl cyanostilbene-based AIEgen (PCRM) is newly synthesized. The synthesized PCRM exhibits aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and responds reversibly to acid and base stimuli. To fabricate the nanoporous polymer-stabilized film, PCRM and 4-(octyloxy)benzoic acid (8OB) are complexed in a 1:1 ratio through hydrogen bonding. The PCRM-8OB complex with a smectic mesophase is uniaxially oriented at first and photopolymerized with a crosslinker. By subsequently removing 8OB in an alkaline solution, nanopores are generated in the self-assembled and polymerized hierarchical 2D nanostructure film. The prepared nanoporous fluorescent films exhibit not only the reversible response to acid and base stimuli but also mechanical and chemical robustness. Since the nanoporous fluorescent films have different sensitivities to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) depending on the molecular orientation in the film, advanced acid vapor sensors that can display the risk level according to the concentration of TFA are demonstrated. Reactive AIEgens-based hierarchical nanostructure films with nanopores fabricated by a subsequent process of self-assembly, polymerization, and etching can open a new door for the development of advanced chemosensors.

The tightest self-assembled ruthenium metal-organic framework combined with proximity hybridization for ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence analysis of paraquat

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as porous materials, have great potential for exploring high-performance electrochemiluminescence (ECL) probes. However, the constrained applicability of MOFs in the realm of ECL biosensing is primarily attributed to their inadequate water stability, which consequently impairs the overall ECL efficiency. Herein, we developed a competitive ECL biosensor based on a novel tightest structural ruthenium-based organic framework emitter combining the proximity hybridization-induced catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) strategy and the quenching effect between the Ru-MOF and ferrocene for detecting paraquat (PQ). Through a simple hydrothermal synthesis strategy, ruthenium and 2,2'-bipyrimidine (bpm) are head-to-head self-assembled to obtain a novel tightest structural Ru-MOF. Due to the metal-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) effect between ruthenium and the bpm ligand and the connectivity between the internal chromophore units, the Ru-MOF exhibits strong ECL emissions. Meanwhile, the coordination-driven Ru-MOF utilizes strong metal-organic coordination bonds as building blocks, which effectively solves the problem of serious leakage of chromophores caused by water solubility. The sensitive analysis of PQ is realized in the range of 1 pg/mL to 1 ng/mL with a detection limit of 0.352 pg/mL. The tightest structural Ru-MOF driven by the coordination of ruthenium and bridging ligands (2,2'-bipyrimidine, bpm) provides new horizons for exploring high-performance MOF-based ECL probes for quantitative analysis of biomarkers.

Breakthrough applications of porous organic materials for membrane-based CO2 separation: a review

Over the last decades, porous organic materials (POMs) have been extensively employed in various industrial approaches including gas separation, catalysis and energy production due to possessing indisputable advantages like great surface area, high permeability, controllable pore size, appropriate functionalization and excellent processability compared to traditional substances like zeolites, Alumina and polymers. This review presents the recent breakthroughs in the multifunctional POMs for potential use in the membrane-based CO2 separation. Some examples of highly-selective membranes using multifunctional POMs are described. Moreover, various classifications of POMs following with their advantages and disadvantages in CO2 separation processes are explained. Apart from reviewing the state-of-the-art POMs in CO2 separation, the challenges/limitations of POMs with tailored structures for reasonable application are discussed.

Predicted Separation of Acid Gases from Gas Mixtures by Functionalized Porous Aromatic Frameworks

The selective adsorption of target acid gas molecules from binary gas mixtures by porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with two identical functional groups per aromatic ring (PAF-R2) was computationally investigated using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. PAF-R2 adsorption was considered for three binary mixtures of small molecular concentrations of acid gas and abundant nitrogen gas (CO2/N2, SO2/N2, and H2S/N2). The results indicate that additional functional groups enhance acid gas loadings and selectivity, compared with pristine PAF and single-functionalized PAFs. Low pressures yield linearly increasing gas loadings and constant selectivity, while high pressures yield much higher adsorption and selectivity. In particular, SO2 loading and selectivity under high pressures are heavily influenced by the PAF's maximum adsorption limit, which can be linked back to the functional groups and their configuration. In summary, PAF-(3,5)-(COOH)2 (nomenclature of PAFs is provided in the Appendix in the Supporting Information) and many other PAF with the same two electron-withdrawing groups are predicted to have great acid gas adsorption and selectivity from gas mixtures, while PAF-(3,5)-(OH)2 (one of PAFs with two identical electron-donating groups) is predicted to have good adsorption and selectivity, especially under elevated pressures. The results of this work can provide insights into various types of PAFs with great selective adsorption ability and their corresponding conditions. The simulation procedures and results may inspire the exploration and screening of other types of PAFs or porous materials, for acid gas absorption.

Recent Development of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification

Water contamination is an increasing concern to mankind because of the increasing amount of pollutants in aquatic ecosystems. To purify the polluted water, various techniques have been used to remove hazardous components. Unfortunately, traditional cleanup techniques with a low uptake capacity are unable to achieve water purification. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently shown potential in effective water pollutant isolation in terms of selectivity and adsorption capacity over traditional porous materials. The high surface area and versatile functionality of MOFs allow for the development of new adsorbents. The development of MOFs in a range of water treatments in the recent five years will be highlighted in this review, along with assessments of the adsorption performance relevant to the particular task. Synthesizing covalent organic frameworks for unprecedented iodine capture performance

Nuclear energy continues to be an important supplier of electricity, but it has problems with waste management and the possibility to leak radioactive material. Iodine, a potentially harmful byproduct of uranium fission, is hazardous to both the environment and human health. Therefore, developing safe, effective, and affordable storage facilities for iodine waste is crucial. Owing to their well-controlled pore structure and substantial certain surface area, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) show promise for the adsorption of radioactive iodine. The newly developed COFs (SJ-COF, YA-COF, and AA-COF) shown amazing properties, including strong thermal and chemical stability, which made them ideal for efficient iodine capture. Notably, the ultrahigh iodine capture capacities of these COFs-8.52 g g-1, 8.12 g g-1 and 7.01 g g-1-were significantly greater than most previously reported materials. And The % removal efficiency for SJ-COF, YA-COF and AA-COF from I2/cyclohexane solutions were 87.9 %, 88.6% and 82.6 % respectively. It is noteworthy that the three COFs have high selectivity, reusability, and iodine retention abilities, maintaining iodine even after five recyclings. Based on the outcomes of the experiments, the adsorption processes of the three COFs were examined, and it was discovered that iodine was bound through physical-chemical adsorption. The findings of our work provide a ground-breaking standard for the removal of nuclear waste and demonstrate the enormous potential of COFs as adaptable porous structures that may be specifically designed to address major environmental concerns.

Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization for porous poly-phenylenes with exceptional gas uptake properties

We report the synthesis of two-dimensional and three-dimensional porous polyphenylenes (2D/3D-pPPs) via the Diels-Alder cycloaddition polymerization reaction. The resulting 2D and 3D-pPPs showed surface areas up to 1553 m2 g-1, pore volumes of 1.45 cm3 g-1 and very high H2 uptake capacities of 7.4 and 7.1 wt% at 77 K, respectively, along with a competitive high-pressure CO2 and CH4 uptake performance.

Creation of Cationic Polymeric Nanotrap Featuring High Anion Density and Exceptional Alkaline Stability for Highly Efficient Pertechnetate Removal from Nuclear Waste Streams

There is an urgent need for highly efficient sorbents capable of selectively removing 99TcO4- from concentrated alkaline nuclear wastes, which has long been a significant challenge. In this study, we present the design and synthesis of a high-performance adsorbent, CPN-3 (CPN denotes cationic polymeric nanotrap), which achieves excellent 99TcO4- capture under strong alkaline conditions by incorporating branched alkyl chains on the N3 position of imidazolium units and optimizing the framework anion density within the pores of a cationic polymeric nanotrap. CPN-3 features exceptional stability in harsh alkaline and radioactive environments as well as exhibits fast kinetics, high adsorption capacity, and outstanding selectivity with full reusability and great potential for the cost-effective removal of 99TcO4-/ReO4- from contaminated water. Notably, CPN-3 marks a record-high adsorption capacity of 1052 mg/g for ReO4- after treatment with 1 M NaOH aqueous solutions for 24 h and demonstrates a rapid removal rate for 99TcO4- from simulated Hanford and Savannah River Site waste streams. The mechanisms for the superior alkaline stability and 99TcO4- capture performances of CPN-3 are investigated through combined experimental and computational studies. This work suggests an alternative perspective for designing functional materials to address nuclear waste management.

Porous organic framework membranes based on interface-induced polymerisation: design, synthesis and applications

Porous organic frameworks (POFs) are novel porous materials that have attracted much attention due to their extraordinary properties, such as high specific surface area, tunable pore size, high stability and ease of functionalisation. However, conventional synthesised POFs are mostly large-sized particles or insoluble powders, which are difficult to recycle and have low mass transfer efficiencies, limiting the development of their cutting-edge applications. Therefore, processing POF materials into membrane structures is of great significance. In recent years, interface engineering strategies have proved to be efficient methods for the formation of POF membranes. In this perspective, recent advances in the use of interfaces to prepare POF membranes are reviewed. The challenges of this strategy and the potential applications of the formed POF membranes are discussed.

Recent progress in the synthesis and applications of covalent organic framework-based composites

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have historically been of interest to researchers in different areas due to their distinctive characteristics, including well-ordered pores, large specific surface area, and structural tunability. In the past few years, as COF synthesis techniques developed, COF-based composites fabricated by integrating COFs and other functional materials including various kinds of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles, ionic liquids, metal-organic frameworks, silica, polymers, enzymes and carbon nanomaterials have emerged as a novel kind of porous hybrid material. Herein, we first provide a thorough summary of advanced strategies for preparing COF-based composites; then, the emerging applications of COF-based composites in diverse fields due to their synergistic effects are systematically highlighted, including analytical chemistry (sensing, extraction, membrane separation, and chromatographic separation) and catalysis. Finally, the current challenges associated with future perspectives of COF-based composites are also briefly discussed to inspire the advancement of more COF-based composites with excellent properties.

Ligating Catalytically Active Peptides onto Microporous Polymers: A General Route Toward Specifically-Functional High Surface Area Platforms

A versatile post-synthetic modification strategy to functionalize a high surface area microporous network (MPN-OH) by bio-orthogonal inverse electron-demand Diels-Alder (IEDDA) ligation is presented. While the polymer matrix is modified with a readily accessible norbornene isocyanate (Nor-NCO), a series of functional units presenting the robust asymmetric 1,2,4,5-tetrazine (Tz) allows easy functionalization of the MPN by chemoselective Nor/Tz ligation. A generic route is demonstrated, modulating the internal interfaces by introducing carboxylates, amides or amino acids as well as an oligopeptide d-Pro-Pro-Glu organocatalyst. The MPN-Pz-Peptide construct largely retains the catalytic activity and selectivity in an enantioselective enamine catalysis, demonstrates remarkable availability in different solvents, offers heterogeneous organocatalysis in bulk and shows stability in recycling settings.

Relationships Between Defectivity and Porosity in High Surface Area Porous Aromatic Frameworks

Porous aromatic framework (PAF) microporosity is known to be strongly dependent on synthetic approach but little is known about why certain reactions yield significantly and consistently more porous PAFs. This article explores the connections between synthetic pathway, PAF defectivity, and microporosity. Using a network disassembly strategy, we show that defectivity is highly dependent on synthetic approach and that more defective PAFs are associated with lower surface areas and pore volumes. This empirical association is corroborated through systematic introduction of defects to a modelPAF, which results in significant reduction of apparent surface area and pore volumes. Taken together, these data suggest that only highly efficient coupling reactions should be targeted for the synthesis of ultra-high surface area porous aromatic frameworks.

Azo-Linked Porous Polycalix[n]arenes for the Efficient Removal of Organic Micropollutants from Water

Developing novel porous adsorbents for efficient wastewater treatment is significant to the environment protection. Herein, three porous polycalix[n]arenes (n = 4, 6, and 8) which had varying cavity sizes of the macrocycle (Azo-CX4P, Azo-CX6P, and Azo-CX8P) were prepared under mild conditions and tested for their potential application in water purification. Azo-CX8P with a larger cavity size of the macrocycle outperformed Azo-CX4P and Azo-CX6P in screening studies involving a range of organic micropollutants. It was proved that Azo-CX8P was especially efficient in the removal of cationic dyes because of its high negative surface charge. In terms of the adsorption of Rhodamine B with Azo-CX8P, the pseudo-second-order rate constant reaches 5.025 g·mg-1·min-1 with the maximum adsorption capacity being 1345 mg·g-1. These values are significantly higher compared with those recorded for most adsorbents. In addition, the easily prepared Azo-CX8P can be reused at least six times without a loss of the adsorption efficiency, demonstrating its potential use in water purification.

Liquid Metal Interfacial Engineering Strategy to Synthesize All-Carbon-Linked Porous Aromatic Frameworks for the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Epoxides

This study explores the room-temperature synthesis of porous materials and the immobilization of CO2 without the use of metals. The porous aromatic frameworks synthesized at room temperature retain the important functional group structure, and the abundance of carbon-chlorine bonds creates an excellent environment for imidazole linkage. Consequently, a catalyst conducive to the cycloaddition of carbon dioxide is obtained. Hexachloro-p-xylene is explored as the precursor, and a catalyst conducive to carbon dioxide cycloaddition is obtained. The functionalized porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-280-I/B) possess a conversion of 99.6% with a selectivity of 98.9% toward styrene carbonate (SC). The findings of this study can help mitigate the impact of greenhouse gases and enable the production of organic compounds in the circular carbonate platform, turning waste into valuable resources.

Palladium(II)-immobilized Triptycene based Hypercrosslinked Polymers: An Efficient, Green, and Reusable Heterogenous Catalyst for Suzuki-Miyaura Cross-coupling Reaction

The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling (SMCC) involves the coupling of organohalides and organoboron molecules in the presence of Pd(II)-based catalysts. Often SMCC reactions employ homogenous catalysts. However, such homogenous SMCC reactions are associated with certain limitations which has motivated design of effective and sustainable Pd(II)-based heterogeneous catalytic systems. Herein, we report a systematic development of a Pd(II)-immobilized and triptycene based ionic hyper crosslinked polymer (Pd@TP-iHCP) and explored its application as a heterogeneous catalyst for SMCC reaction. Pd@TP-iHCP has ample N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) pendants that anchor Pd(II) centres on the polymeric matrix. Pd@TP-iHCP was characterized satisfactorily using FT-IR, 13 C CP-MAS NMR, BET surface area analysis, SEM, EDX and HRTEM. The performance of Pd@TP-iHCP as a heterogeneous catalyst for SMCC reactions was explored using various combinations of aryl boronic acids and aryl halides. Experimental results show that Pd@TP-iHCP is associated with a moderately high surface area. It is an efficient catalyst for SMCC (in aqueous media) with a modest loading of 0.8 mol % Pd(II)-catalyst since high yields of the expected products were obtained in shorter time intervals. Pd@TP-iHCP also features excellent stability and catalyst recyclability since it could be re-used for several cycles without any significant decrease in catalytic efficiency.

Self-Standing Porous Aromatic Framework Electrodes for Efficient Electrochemical Uranium Extraction

Electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater provides a new opportunity for a sustainable supply of nuclear fuel. However, there is still room for studying flexible electrode materials in this field. Herein, we construct amidoxime group modified porous aromatic frameworks (PAF-144-AO) on flexible carbon cloths in situ using an easy to scale-up electropolymerization method followed by postdecoration to fabricate the self-standing, binder-free, metal-free electrodes (PAF-E). Based on the architectural design, adsorption sites (amidoxime groups) and catalytic sites (carbazole groups) are integrated into PAF-144-AO. Under the action of an alternating electric field, uranyl ions are selectively captured by PAN-E and subsequently transformed into Na2O(UO3·H2O)x precipitates in the presence of Na+ via reversible electron transfer, with an extraction capacity of 12.6 mg g-1 over 24 days from natural seawater. This adsorption-electrocatalysis mechanism is also demonstrated at the molecular level by ex situ spectroscopy. Our work offers an effective approach to designing flexible porous organic polymer electrodes, which hold great potential in the field of electrochemical uranium extraction from seawater.

Ultrafast Proton Conduction in an Aqueous Electrolyte Confined in Adamantane-like Micropores of a Sulfonated, Aromatic Framework

Sulfonated, cross-linked porous polymers are promising frameworks for aqueous high-performance electrolyte-host systems for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. The systems offer high proton conductivities, excellent chemical and mechanical stabilities, and straightforward water management. However, little is known about mass transport mechanisms in such nanostructured hosts. We report on the synthesis and postsynthetic sulfonation of an aromatic framework (SPAF-2) with a 3D-interconnected nanoporosity and varying sulfonation degrees. Water adsorption produces the system SPAF-2H20. It features proton exchange capacities up to 6 mequiv g-1 and exceptional proton conductivities of about 1 S cm-1. Two contributions are essential for the highly efficient transport. First, the nanometer-sized pores link the charge transport to the diffusion of adsorbed water molecules, which is almost as fast as bulk water. Second, continuous exchange between interface-bound and mobile species enhances the conductivities at elevated temperatures. SPAF-2H20 showcases how to tailor nanostructured electrolyte-host systems with liquid-like conductivities.

Advanced porous materials and emerging technologies for radionuclides removal from Fukushima radioactive water

Japan recently announced the plan to discharge over 1.2 million tons of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean, which contained hazardous radionuclides such as 60Co, 90Sr, 125Sb, 129I, 3H, 137Cs, and 99TcO4-, etc. The contaminated water will pose an enormous threat to global ecosystems and human health. Developing materials and technologies for efficient radionuclide removal is highly desirable and arduous because of the extreme conditions, including super acidity or alkalinity, high ionic strength, and strong ionizing radiation. Recently, advanced porous material, such as porous POPs, MOFs, COFs, PAFs, etc., has shown promise of improved separation of radionuclides due to their intrinsic structural advantages. Furthermore, emerging technologies applied to radionuclide removal have also been summarized. In order to better deal with radionuclide contamination, higher requirements for the design of nanomaterials and technologies applied to practical radionuclide removal are proposed. Finally, we call for comprehensive implementation of strategies and strengthened cooperation to mitigate the harm caused by radioactive contamination to oceans, atmosphere, soil, and human health.

Regulating steric hindrance in difunctionalized porous aromatic frameworks for the selective separation of Pb(II)

Efficient and selective removal of Pb(II) from wastewater with complex matrix remains a challenging task. Porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with predesigned functional building blocks provide a favorable platform for the selective separation of Pb(II). Herein, the bifunctional SPAFs with the introduction of -OH and -SO3H were synthesized through rationally optimizing their steric hindrance. As a result, the SPAF-0.75 exhibits favorable adsorption capacity of Pb(II) (212.34 mg g-1), which is 22 times larger than pristine framework. Competition experiment indicates that SPAF-0.75 possess the selective removal of Pb(II) without interfering from co-existing metal ions. The removal rate of SPAF-0.75 still retain at 100% after six successive cycles. The DFT calculation illustrates that -OH and -SO3H are co-participate in the process of capturing Pb(II), revealing SPAF-0.75 preferred removal of Pb(II) owing to the lowest adsorption energy (ΔEab = -3.99 eV). This study extend the understanding of the structure-property relationship and facilitate new possibilities for PAFs.

Metalation of functionalized benzoquinoline-linked COFs for electrocatalytic oxygen reduction and lithium-sulfur batteries

It is worthwhile to explore and develop multifunctional composites with unique advantages for energy conversion and utilization. Post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategies can endow novel properties to already excellent covalent organic frameworks (COFs). In this study, we prepared a range of COF-based composites via a multi-step PSM strategy. COF-Ph-OH was acquired by demethylation between anhydrous BBr3 and - OMe, and then, M@COF-Ph-OH was further obtained by forming the N - M - O structure. COF-Ph-OH exhibited a 2e--dominated oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway with high H2O2 selectivity, while M@COF-Ph-OH exhibited a 4e--dominated ORR pathway with low H2O2 selectivity, which was due to the introduction of a metal salt with a d electron structure that facilitated the acquisition of electrons and changed the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediate (*OOH). It was proven that the d electron structure was effective at regulating the reaction pathway of the electrocatalytic ORR. Moreover, Co@COF-Ph-OH showed better 4e- ORR properties than Fe@COF-Ph-OH and Ni@COF-Ph-OH. In addition, compared with the other sulfur-impregnated COF-based composites examined in this study, S-Co@COF-Ph-OH had a larger initial capacity, a weaker impedance, and a stronger cycling durability in Li-S batteries, which was attributed to the unique porous structure ensuring high sulfur utilization, the loaded cobalt accelerating LiPS electrostatic adsorption and promoting LiPS catalytic conversion, and the benzoquinoline ring structure being ultra-stable. This work offers not only a rational and feasible strategy for the synthesis of multifunctional COF-based composites, but also promotes their application in electrochemistry.

Heterogenization of molecular catalysts within porous solids: the case of Ni-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization from zeolites to metal-organic frameworks

The last decade has seen a tremendous expansion of the field of heterogenized molecular catalysis, especially with the growing interest in metal-organic frameworks and related porous hybrid solids. With successful achievements in the transfer from molecular homogeneous catalysis to heterogenized processes come the necessary discussions on methodologies used and a critical assessment on the advantages of heterogenizing molecular catalysis. Here we use the example of nickel-catalyzed ethylene oligomerization, a reaction of both fundamental and applied interest, to review heterogenization methodologies of well-defined molecular catalysts within porous solids while addressing the biases in the comparison between original molecular systems and heterogenized counterparts.

The application of aromaticity and antiaromaticity to reaction mechanisms

Aromaticity, in general, can promote a given reaction by stabilizing a transition state or a product via a mobility of π electrons in a cyclic structure. Similarly, such a promotion could be also achieved by destabilizing an antiaromatic reactant. However, both aromaticity and transition states cannot be directly measured in experiment. Thus, computational chemistry has been becoming a key tool to understand the aromaticity-driven reaction mechanisms. In this review, we will analyze the relationship between aromaticity and reaction mechanism to highlight the importance of density functional theory calculations and present it according to an approach via either aromatizing a transition state/product or destabilizing a reactant by antiaromaticity. Specifically, we will start with a particularly challenging example of dinitrogen activation followed by other small-molecule activation, C-F bond activation, rearrangement, as well as metathesis reactions. In addition, antiaromaticity-promoted dihydrogen activation, CO2 capture, and oxygen reduction reactions will be also briefly discussed. Finally, caution must be cast as the magnitude of the aromaticity in the transition states is not particularly high in most cases. Thus, a proof of an adequate electron delocalization rather than a complete ring current is recommended to support the relatively weak aromaticity in these transition states.

Unravelling the Molecular Structure and Confining Environment of an Organometallic Catalyst Heterogenized within Amorphous Porous Polymers

The catalytic activity of multifunctional, microporous materials is directly linked to the spatial arrangement of their structural building blocks. Despite great achievements in the design and incorporation of isolated catalytically active metal complexes within such materials, a detailed understanding of their atomic-level structure and the local environment of the active species remains a fundamental challenge, especially when these latter are hosted in non-crystalline organic polymers. Here, we show that by combining computational chemistry with pair distribution function analysis, 129 Xe NMR, and Dynamic Nuclear Polarization enhanced NMR spectroscopy, a very accurate description of the molecular structure and confining surroundings of a catalytically active Rh-based organometallic complex incorporated inside the cavity of amorphous bipyridine-based porous polymers is obtained. Small, but significant, differences in the structural properties of the polymers are highlighted depending on their backbone motifs.

Boosting the catalysis of cesium phosphomolybdate encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66 by microenvironment modulation for epoxidation of alkenes

The chemical microenvironment of polyoxometalates (POMs) encapsulated in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) presents a significant influence on their catalytic performance, which can be easily regulated by the linker functional group alteration or metal substitution in MOFs. Herein, a series of cesium phosphomolybdate (CsPM) encapsulated in hierarchical porous UiO-66-X composites (CsPM@HP-UiO-66-X, X = H, 2CH3, or 2OH, where X represents the alterable group grafted onto the linker benzene ring) were successfully synthesized through a one pot modulated solvothermal method. The catalytic performances of the obtained materials were explored in alkene epoxidation reaction with tert-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BuOOH). CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 showed relatively high catalytic activity, stability, and epoxidation selectivity in cyclooctene epoxidation among the CsPM@HP-UiO-66-X composites. Moreover, CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 was effective in the epoxidation of numerous alkenes, especially cyclic alkenes. The superior catalytic activity of CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3 is mainly attributed to the modulation of the microenvironment surrounding CsPM active sites by introducing a hydrophobic methyl group. Meanwhile, the size-matched effect, the introduction of cesium cations, and the strong metal-support interactions (SMSIs) between CsPM and HP-UiO-66-2CH3 play a crucial role in the stability of CsPM@HP-UiO-66-2CH3.

Adsorption Behavior of a Ternary Covalent Organic Polymer Anchored with SO3H for Ciprofloxacin

Owing to the poor treatment efficiency of wastewater containing fluoroquinolones (FQs), effective removal of such pollutants has become a significant issue in waste management. In this study, a ternary covalent organic polymer anchored with SO3H (COP-SO3H) was designed using the Schiff reaction and a multicomponent solvent thermal method. The synthesized COP-SO3H polymer possesses multiple functional binding sites, including amide groups, sulfonic groups, and aromatic frameworks, enabling it to effectively adsorb ciprofloxacin (which belongs to FQs) through mechanisms such as pore-filling effects, electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interactions, and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance. COP-SO3H demonstrated outstanding adsorption performance for ciprofloxacin, exhibiting a high adsorption capacity, broad pH stability, strong resistance to ionic interference, and good regenerability. Moreover, it displayed preferential selectivity toward fluoroquinolone antibiotics. The present study not only investigates the intricate structural and functional design of COP-SO3H materials but also presents potential applications for the efficient adsorption of specific antibiotics.

Porous organic polymers (POPs) for environmental remediation

Modern global industrialization along with the ever-increasing growth of the population has resulted in continuous enhancement in the discharge and accumulation of various toxic and hazardous chemicals in the environment. These harmful pollutants, including toxic gases, inorganic heavy metal ions, anthropogenic waste, persistent organic pollutants, toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, volatile organic compounds, etc., are destroying the ecological balance of the environment. Therefore, systematic monitoring and effective remediation of these toxic pollutants either by adsorptive removal or by catalytic degradation are of great significance. From this viewpoint, porous organic polymers (POPs), being two- or three-dimensional polymeric materials, constructed from small organic molecules connected with rigid covalent bonds have come forth as a promising platform toward various leading applications, especially for efficient environmental remediation. Their unique chemical and structural features including high stability, tunable pore functionalization, and large surface area have boosted the transformation of POPs into various macro-physical forms such as thick and thin-film membranes, which led to a new direction in advanced level pollutant removal, separation and catalytic degradation. In this review, our focus is to highlight the recent progress and achievements in the strategic design, synthesis, architectural-engineering and applications of POPs and their composite materials toward environmental remediation. Several strategies to improve the adsorption efficiency and catalytic degradation performance along with the in-depth interaction mechanism of POP-based materials have been systematically summarized. In addition, evolution of POPs from regular powder form application to rapid and more efficient size and chemo-selective, "real-time" applicable membrane-based application has been further highlighted. Finally, we put forward our perspective on the challenges and opportunities of these materials toward real-world implementation and future prospects in next generation remediation technology.

Unique fluorophilic pores engineering within porous aromatic frameworks for trace perfluorooctanoic acid removal

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), a representative of per/polyfluorinated alkyl substances, has become a persistent water pollutant of widespread concern due to its biological toxicity and refractory property. In this work, we design and synthesize two porous aromatic frameworks (PAF) of PAF-CF3 and PAF-C2F5 using fluorine-containing alkyl based monomers in tetrahedral geometry. Both PAFs exhibit nanosized pores (∼1.0 nm) of high surface areas (over 800 m2 g-1) and good fluorophilicity. Remarkable adsorption capacity (˃740 mg g-1) and superior efficiency (˃24 g mg-1 h-1) are achieved toward the removal of PFOA with 1 μg L-1 concentration owing to unique C-F···F-C interactions. In particular, PAF-CF3 and PAF-C2F5 are able to reduce the PFOA concentration in water to 37.9 ng L-1 and 43.3 ng L-1, below EPA regulations (70 ng L-1). The reusability and high efficiency give both PAFs a great potential for sewage treatment.

Developing a fast and catalyst-free protocol to form C=N double bond with high functional group tolerance

The carbon-nitrogen double bond (C=N) is a fundamentally important functional group in organic chemistry. This is largely due to the fact that C=N acts as electrophilic synthon to give nitrogen-containing compounds. Here, we report the condensation of primary amine or hydrazine with very electron-deficient aldehyde to form C=N bond in the absence of any catalysts (metals and acids). The protocol performs at room temperature and applies water as co-solvent. Two hundred examples are presented here. With its intrinsic advantages of wide substrate scopes, excellent efficiency (high yields and short reaction time), operational simplicity, mild condition (room temperature as reaction temperature, no catalysts, no additions, water as co-solvent and opening to air) and available starting materials, the protocol can be compatible with various drugs, prodrugs, dyes and pharmacophores containing primary amino group. In addition, we also successfully apply this protocol to rapidly synthesize the core scaffolds of bioactive molecules.

Covalent organic frameworks for CO2 capture: from laboratory curiosity to industry implementation

CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has increased by about 40% since the 1960s. Among various technologies available for carbon capture, adsorption and membrane processes have been receiving tremendous attention due to their potential to capture CO2 at low costs. The kernel for such processes is the sorbent and membrane materials, and tremendous progress has been made in designing and fabricating novel porous materials for carbon capture. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a class of porous crystalline materials, are promising sorbents for CO2 capture due to their high surface area, low density, controllable pore size and structure, and preferable stabilities. However, the absence of synergistic developments between materials and engineering processes hinders achieving the qualitative leap for net-zero emissions. Considering the lack of a timely review on the combination of state-of-the-art COFs and engineering processes, in this Tutorial Review, we emphasize the developments of COFs for meeting the challenges of carbon capture and disclose the strategies of fabricating COFs for realizing industrial implementation. Moreover, this review presents a detailed and basic description of the engineering processes and industrial status of carbon capture. It highlights the importance of machine learning in integrating simulations of molecular and engineering levels. We aim to stimulate both academia and industry communities for joined efforts in bringing COFs to practical carbon capture.

Hyper-Crosslinked Porous Organic Nanomaterials: Structure-Oriented Design and Catalytic Applications

Hyper-crosslinked porous organic nanomaterials, especially the hyper-crosslinked polymers (HCPs), are a unique class of materials that combine the benefits of high surface area, porous structure, and good chemical and thermal stability all rolled into one. A wide range of synthetic methods offer an enormous variety of HCPs with different pore structures and morphologies, which has allowed HCPs to be developed for gas adsorption and separations, chemical adsorption and encapsulation, and heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present a systematic review of recent approaches to pore size modulation and morphological tailoring of HCPs and their applications to catalysis. We mainly compare the effects of pore size modulation and morphological tailoring on catalytic applications, aiming to pave the way for researchers to develop HCPs with an optimal performance for modern applications.

PAF-6 Doped with Phosphoric Acid through Alkaline Nitrogen Atoms Boosting High-Temperature Proton-Exchange Membranes for High Performance of Fuel Cells

High-temperature proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) can offer improved energy efficiency and tolerance to fuel/air impurities. The high expense of the high-temperature proton-exchange membranes (HT-PEMs) and their low durability at high temperature still impede their further practical applications. In this work, a phosphoric acid (PA)-doped porous aromatic framework (PAF-6-PA) is incorporated into poly[2,2'-(p-oxydiphenylene)-5,5'-benzimidazole] (OPBI) to fabricate novel PAF-6-PA/OPBI composite HT-PEMs through solution-casting. The alkaline nitrogen structure in PAF-6 can be protonated with PA to provide proton hopping sites, and its porous structure can enhance the PA retention in the membranes, thus creating fast pathways for proton transfer. The hydrogen bond interaction between the rigid PAF-6 and OPBI can also enhance the mechanical properties and chemical stability of the composite membranes. Consequently, PAF-6-PA/OPBI exhibits an optimal proton conductivity of 0.089 S cm-1 at 200 °C, and peak power density of 437.7 mW cm-2 (Pt: 0.3 mg cm-2 ), which is significantly higher than that of the OPBI.   The PAF-6-PA/OPBI provides a novel strategy for the practical application of PBI-based HT-PEMs.

Study on Gas Sorption and Iodine Uptake of a Metal-Organic Framework Based on Curcumin

Medi-MOF-1 is a highly porous Metal-Organic framework (MOF) constructed from Zn(II) and curcumin. The obtained crystal was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A micrometer-sized crystal with similar morphology was successfully obtained using the solvothermal method. Thanks to its high surface area, good stability, and abound pores, the as-synthesized medi-MOF-1 could be used as a functional porous material to adsorb different gases (H₂, CO₂, CH₄, and N₂) and iodine (I₂). The activated sample exhibited a high I₂ adsorption ability of 1.936 g g^-1 at room temperature via vapor diffusion. Meanwhile, the adsorbed I₂ could be released slowly in ethanol, confirming the potential application for I₂ adsorption.

Salen-based porous aromatic frameworks with multi-active sites as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries

Porous organic polymers are considered as excellent candidates for the electrode materials in rechargeable battery due to their desirable properties including porosity, customizable structure, and intrinsic chemical stability. Herein a Salen-based porous aromatic framework (Zn/Salen-PAF) is synthesized through a metal directed method and further used as efficient anode materialfor lithium-ion battery. Attributing to the stable functional skeleton, Zn/Salen-PAF delivers a reversible capacity of 631 mAh·g^-1 at 50 mA·g^-1, a high-rate capability of 157 mAh·g^-1 at 20.0 A·g^-1 and a long-term cycling capacity of 218 mAh·g^-1 at 5.0 A·g^-1 even after 2000 cycles. Compared to the Salen-PAF without metal ions, Zn/Salen-PAF possesses better electrical conductivity and more active sites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) investigation indicates that the coordination of Zn²⁺ with N₂O₂ unit not only improves the conjugation of the framework but also contributes to the in situ cross-sectional oxidation of the ligand during reaction, which results in the electron redistribution of oxygen atom and the formation of CO bonds.

Polypyrene Porous Organic Framework for Efficiently Capturing Electron Specialty Gases

The polypyrene polymer with an extended π-conjugated skeleton is attractive for perfluorinated electron specialty gas (F-gas) capture as the high electronegativity of fluorine atoms makes F-gases strongly electronegative gases. Herein, a polypyrene porous organic framework (termed as Ppy-POF) with an extended π-conjugated structure and excellent acid resistance was constructed. Systematic studies have shown that the abundant π-conjugated structures and gradient electric field distribution in Ppy-POF can endow it exceptional adsorption selectivity for high polarizable F-gases and xenon (Xe), which has been collaboratively confirmed by single-component gas adsorption experiments, time-dependent adsorption rate tests, dynamic breakthrough experiments, etc. Electrostatic potential distribution and charge density difference based on Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the selective adsorption of F-gases and Xe in Ppy-POF is attributed to the strong charge-transfer effect and polarization effect between Ppy-POF and gases. These results manifest that the POF with an extended π-conjugated structure and gradient electric field distribution has great potential in efficiently capturing electron specialty gases.
