Computational Calculation of Dissolved Organic Matter Absorption Spectra

Algal extracellular polymeric substance compositions drive the binding characteristics, affinity, and phytotoxicity of graphene oxide in water

Graphene oxide (GO, a popular 2D nanomaterial) poses great potential in water treatment arousing considerable attention regarding its fate and risk in aquatic environments. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) exist widely in water and play critical roles in biogeochemical processes. However, the influences of complex EPS fractions on the fate and risk of GO remain unknown in water. This study integrates fluorescence excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, and biolayer interferometry studies on the binding characteristics and affinity between EPS fractions and GO. The results revealed the preferential binding of fluorescent aromatic protein-like component, fulvic-like component, and non-fluorescent polysaccharide in soluble EPS (S-EPS) and bound EPS (B-EPS) on GO via π-π stacking and electrostatic interaction that contributed to a higher adsorption capacity of S-EPS on GO and weaker affinity than of B-EPS. Moreover, the EPS fractions drive the morphological and structural alterations, and the attenuated colloid stability of GO in water. Notably, GO-EPS induced stronger phytotoxicity (e.g., photosynthetic damage, and membrane lipid remodeling) compared to pristine GO. Metabolic and functional lipid analysis further elucidated the regulation of amino acid, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism contributed to the persistent phytotoxicity. This work provides insights into the roles and mechanisms of EPS fractions composition in regulating the environmental fate and risk of GO in natural water.

Superoxide Photoproduction from Wetland Plant-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter: Implications for Biogeochemical Impacts of Plant Invasion

Although the impacts of exotic wetland plant invasions on native biodiversity, landscape features, and carbon-nitrogen cycles are well appreciated, biogeochemical consequences posed by ecological competition, such as the heterogeneity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) from plant detritus and its impact on the formation of reactive oxygen species, are poorly understood. Thus, this study delves into O2•- photogeneration potential of DOM derived from three different parts (stem, leaf, and panicle) of invasive Spartina alterniflora (SA) and native Phragmites australis (PA). It is found that DOM from the leaves of SA and the panicles of PA has a superior ability to produce O2•-. With more stable aromatic structures and a higher proportion of sulfur-containing organic compounds, SA-derived DOM generally yields more O2•- than that derived from PA. UVA exposure enhances the leaching of diverse DOM molecules from plant detritus. Based on the reported monitoring data and our findings, the invasion of SA is estimated to approximately double the concentration of O2•- in the surrounding water bodies. This study can help to predict the underlying biogeochemical impacts from the perspective of aquatic photochemistry in future scenarios of plant invasion, seawater intrusion, wetland degradation, and elevated solar UV radiation.

Inferring the Molecular Basis for Dissolved Organic Matter Photochemical and Optical Properties

Despite the widespread use of photochemical and optical properties to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM), a significant gap persists in our understanding of the relationship among these properties. This study infers the molecular basis for the optical and photochemical properties of DOM using a comprehensive framework and known structural moieties within DOM. Utilizing Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) as a model DOM, carboxylated aromatics, phenols, and quinones were identified as dominant contributors to the absorbance spectra, and phenols, quinones, aldehydes, and ketones were identified as major contributors to radiative energy pathways. It was estimated that chromophores constitute ∼63% w/w of dissolved organic carbon in SRFA and ∼47% w/w of overall SRFA. Notably, estimations indicate the pool of fluorescent compounds and photosensitizing compounds in SRFA are likely distinct from each other at wavelengths below 400 nm. This perspective offers a practical tool to aid in the identification of probable chemical groups when interpreting optical and photochemical data and challenges the current "black box" thinking. Instead, DOM photochemical and optical properties can be closely estimated by assuming the DOM is composed of a mixture of individual compounds.

Molecular and optical signatures of photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter: Nonnegligible role of suspended particulate matter in urban river

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the Earth's dynamic carbon pools and a key intermediate in the global carbon cycle. Photochemical processes potentially affect DOM composition and activity in surface water. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the integral component of slow-moving rivers, and holds the potential for photochemical reactivity. To further investigate the influence of SPM on DOM photochemical transformation, this study conducted experiments comparing samples with and without SPM irradiated under simulated sunlight. Surface water samples from slow-moving urban rivers were collected. DOM optical characteristics and molecular features obtained by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) were investigated. Photolabile DOM was enriched in unsaturated and highly aromatic terrestrial substances. Photoproduced DOM had low aromaticity and was dominated by saturated aliphatics, protein-like substances, and carbohydrates. Study results indicated that the presence of SPM had a nonnegligible impact on the molecular traits of DOM, such as composition, molecular diversity, photolability, and bioavailability during photochemical reactions. In the environment affected by SPM, molecules containing heteroatoms exhibit higher photosensitivity. SPM promotes the photochemical transformation of a wider range of chemical types of photolabile DOM, particularly nitrogen-containing compounds. This study provides an essential insight into the more precise simulation of photochemical reactions of DOM influenced by SPM occurring in natural rivers, contributing to our understanding of the global carbon cycle from new theoretical perspectives.

Aging rice straw reduces the bioavailability of mercury and methylmercury in paddy soil

Straw amendment is a prevalent agricultural practice worldwide, which can reduce air pollution and improve soil fertility. However, the impact of aging straw amendment on the bioavailability of mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in paddy soil remains unclear. To investigate this, incubation experiments were conducted using the diffusive gradient in thin-film technique. Results showed that amendments of dry-wet aging (DRS), photochemical aging (LRS), and freeze-thaw aging rice straw (FRS) reduced the bioavailable MeHg in paddy soil by 2.2-27.6%, 13.5-69.8%, and 23.5-86.1%, respectively, compared to fresh rice straw (RS) amendment. This result could be due to changes in soil properties such as soil pH and overlying water Fe and Mn as well as microbial abundance (including Clostridiaceae, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteriota). Simultaneously, The LRS and FRS amendments reduced bioavailable Hg in paddy soil by 20.0-40.8% and 17.1-48.6%, respectively, while DRS increased the bioavailable Hg by 15.8-120.0%. This could be attributed to changes in soil oxidation-reduction potential and overlying water SO42- content. Additionally, the results of sand culture experiments showed that the concentrations of Hg uptake by rice seedlings were 97.1-118.2%, 28.1-35.6%, and 198.0-217.1% higher in dissolved organic matter (DOM) derived from DRS, LRS, and FRS than RS, indicating that aging straw leached DOM may promote the Hg bioavailable when straw amendment. This result could be due to lower molecular weight and higher CO functional group content. These results provide new insight into how aging straw amendment affects the bioavailability of Hg and MeHg in paddy soil under different climates.

Compact Fluorescence Spectrometer with Built-In In-Line Calibration: Application to Detect Dissolved Organic Matter in Water

Fluorescence spectrometer (FS) is widely used for component analysis because each fluorescing material has its own characteristic spectrum. However, the spectral calibration is complicated and bulky. Herein, an in-line spectral calibration sheet (ISCS) was proposed in which a narrow band-pass filter and a linear variable filter (LVF) were integrated on a metal plate. By moving the ISCS, the transmitted excitation light power (TEP) as well as fluorescence spectrum can be seamlessly scanned, and the TEP can be used for in-line spectral calibration. A compact FS apparatus based on UV-LED excitation, metal capillary (MC) and ISCS was fabricated (i.e., ISCS-FS), and the ISCS-FS apparatus was applied to detect sodium humate in water. By employing TEP calibration, both the primary inner filter effect (PIFE) and the drift in the optical power of UV-LED can be simultaneously compensated. The linear correlation coefficient of signal concentration was improved from 0.89 to 0.998, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) of replicated detection was improved from 3 to 0.7%. A detection limit of concentration (DLC) of 1.3 μg/L was realized, which is 15-fold lower than that of a commercial FS apparatus (20 μg/L). The DLC is even comparable with that (0.5-4 μg/L) of commercial total organic carbon (TOC) analyzers, which are bulky and expensive. The linear correlation between the measurement results of ISCS-FS and commercial TOC analyzers can reach a good value of 0.94.

Evolutions of dissolved organic matter and disinfection by-products formation in source water during UV-LED (275 nm)/chlorine process

Ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED) is a promising option for the traditional low-pressure UV lamp, but the evolutions of DOM composition, the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and their toxicity need further study in raw water during UV-LED/chlorine process. In UV-LED (275 nm)/chlorine process, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2DCOS) analysis on synchronous fluorescence and UV-vis spectra indicated the protein-like fractions responded faster than the humic-like components, the reactive sequence of peaks for DOM followed the order: 340 nm→240 nm→410 nm→205 nm→290 nm. Compared to chlorination for 30 mins, the UV-LED/chlorine process enhanced the degradation efficiency of three fluorescent components (humic-like, tryptophan-like, tyrosine-like) by 5.1%-46.1%, and the formation of carbonaceous DBPs (C-DBPs) significantly reduced by 43.8% while the formation of nitrogenous DBPs (N-DBPs) increased by 27.3%. The concentrations of C-DBPs increased by 17.8% whereas that of N-DBPs reduced by 30.4% in 24 h post-chlorination. The concentrations of brominated DBPs increased by 17.2% during UV-LED/chlorine process, and further increased by 18.5% in 24 h post-chlorination. According to the results of principal component analysis, the non-fluorescent components of DOM might be important precursors in the formation of haloketones, haloacetonitriles and halonitromethanes during UV-LED/chlorine process. Unlike chlorine treatment, the reaction of DOM in UV-LED/chlorine treatment generated fewer unknown DBPs. Compared with chlorination, the cytotoxicity of C-DBPs reduced but the cytotoxicity of both N-DBPs and Br-DBPs increased during UV-LED/chlorine process. Dichloroacetonitrile had the highest cytotoxicity, followed by monobromoacetic acid, bromochloroacetonitrile and trichloroacetic acid during 30 mins of UV-LED/chlorine process. Therefore, besides N-DBPs, the more toxic Br-DBPs formation in bromide-containing water is also not negligible in the practical applications of UV-LED (275 nm)/chlorine process.

Decoupling Optical Response and Photochemical Formation of Singlet Oxygen in Size Isolated Fractions of Ozonated Dissolved Organic Matter

The complex effects of ozonation on the photophysical and size-based properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were investigated using two DOM isolates, Suwannee River Fulvic Acid (SRFA) and Pony Lake Fulvic Acid (PLFA). A size exclusion chromatography system paired with absorbance, fluorescence, and total organic carbon detection was used to determine the fluorescence quantum yield (Φ_f) as a function of the apparent molecular weight (AMW). Size-based fractions of each isolate were collected and irradiated to measure singlet oxygen (¹O₂) quantum yield (Φ_1O2). Φ_f decreased with ozonation in low AMW fractions, while increasing in high AMW fractions. Φ_1O2 increased with ozone dose in low AMW fractions from ∼2 to ∼7% and ∼3 to ∼11% for PLFA and SRFA, respectively, indicating that these are the most photoreactive fractions of DOM. Decreases in Φ_f and concomitant increases in Φ_1O2 in low AMW fractions indicated that chemical transformations occurred, likely including the conversion of phenols to quinones, particularly in SRFA. Results further suggest that the photoactive and fluorescent fractions of DOM are likely independent pools of chromophores from different AMW fractions. In PLFA, a linear response in Φ_1O2, specific UV absorbance at wavelength 254 nm (SUVA₂₅₄), and Φ_f with ozonation indicated the equal distribution of ozone-reactive moieties.

Photodegradation of organic micropollutants in aquatic environment: Importance, factors and processes

Photochemical reactions widely occur in the aquatic environment and play fundamental roles in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, solar-induced photodegradation is efficient for many organic micropollutants (OMPs), especially those that cannot undergo hydrolysis or biodegradation, and thus can mitigate chemical pollution. Recent reports indicate that photodegradation may play a more important role than biodegradation in many OMP transformations in the aquatic environment. Photodegradation can be influenced by the water matrix such as pH, inorganic ions, and dissolved organic matter (DOM). The effect of the water matrix such as DOM on photodegradation is complex, and new insights concerning the disparate effects of DOM have recently been reported. In addition, the photodegradation process is also influenced by physical factors such as latitude, water depth, and temporal variations in sunlight as these factors determine the light conditions. However, it remains challenging to gain an overview of the importance of photodegradation in the aquatic environment because the reactions involved are diverse and complex. Therefore, this review provides a concise summary of the importance of photodegradation and the major processes related to the photodegradation of OMPs, with particular attention given to recent progress on the major reactions of DOM. In addition, major knowledge gaps in this field of environmental photochemistry are highlighted.

Inferring Ecosystem Function from Dissolved Organic Matter Optical Properties: A Critical Review

Over the last 30 years, the optical property community has shifted from conducting dissolved organic matter (DOM) measurements on new complex mixtures in natural and engineered systems to furthering ecosystem understanding in the context of past, present, and future carbon (C) cycling regimes. However, the appropriate use of optical properties to understand DOM behavior in complex biogeochemical systems is of recent debate. This critical review provides an extensive survey of DOM optical property literature across atmospheric, marine, and terrestrial biospheres using a categorical approach that probes each biosphere and its subdivisions. Using this approach, a rubric of ecosystem variables, such as productive nature, C cycling rate, C inputs, and water quality, sets the foundation for interpreting commonly used optical property DOM metrics such as fluorescence index (FI), humification index (HIX), and specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA₂₅₄). Case studies and a meta-analysis of each biosphere and subdivision found substantial overlap and characteristic distributions corresponding to ecosystem context for FI, HIX, and SUVA₂₅₄, signifying chromophores and fluorophores from different ecosystems may be more similar than originally thought. This review challenges researchers to consider ecosystem connectivity when applying optical property results rather than making traditional "if this, then that" results-style conclusions.

Dissolved Organic Matter Promotes the Aging Process of Polystyrene Microplastics under Dark and Ultraviolet Light Conditions: The Crucial Role of Reactive Oxygen Species

Microplastics (MPs) interact frequently with dissolved organic matter (DOM) commonly found in the environment, but information on the aging behavior of MPs under the participation of DOM is still lacking. Thus, the polystyrene microplastic (PSMP) aging process with DOM participation was systematically studied by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy analyses under dark and ultraviolet (UV) light conditions. DOM was found to promote electron transfer to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) under dark conditions and the aging of PSMPs, while the process of DOM generating ROS under UV light was more susceptible to photoelectrons and accelerated the aging process of PSMPs. However, among the four DOM types, fulvic acid (FA) has a more significant promoting effect on the aging process of PSMPs than humic acid, which can be attributed to the stronger conversion ability of FA to semiquinone radicals. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the difference in the aging process of different structures of plastics with the participation of DOM. This study provides a necessary theoretical basis for the study of the migration of MPs in groundwater and deep surface water.

Molecular characteristics and stable carbon isotope compositions of dicarboxylic acids and related compounds in wintertime aerosols of Northwest China

Dicarboxylic acids are one of the important water-soluble organic compounds in atmospheric aerosols, causing adverse effects to both climate and human health. More attention has therefore been paid to organic acids in aerosols. In this study, the molecular distribution and diurnal variations of wintertime dicarboxylic acids in a rural site of Guanzhong Plain, Northwest China, were explored. Oxalic acid (C₂, day: 438.9 ± 346.8 ng m⁻³, night: 398.8 ± 392.3 ng m⁻³) is the most abundant compound followed by methylglyoxal (mGly, day: 207.8 ± 281.1 ng m⁻³, night: 222.9 ± 231.0 ng m⁻³) and azelaic (C₉, day: 212.8 ± 269.1 ng m⁻³, night: 211.4 ± 136.7 ng m⁻³) acid. The ratios of C₉/C₆ and C₉/Ph indicating that atmospheric dicarboxylic acids in winter in the region mainly come from biomass burning. Furthermore, secondary inorganic ions (NO₃⁻, SO₄²⁻, and NH₄⁺), relative humidity, liquid water content, and in-situ pH of aerosols are highly linearly correlated with C₂, suggesting that liquid phase oxidation is an important pathway for the formation of dicarboxylic acids. The δ¹³C analysis of C₂ suggested that lighter carbon isotope compositions tend to be oxidized to form aqueous-phase secondary organic aerosols (aqSOA), leading to the decay of ¹³C in aqSOA products rather than aerosol aging. This study provides a theoretical basis for the mechanism of formation of dicarboxylic acid.
