Kinetics of Thallium(I) Oxidation by Free Chlorine in Bromide-Containing Waters: Insights into the Reactivity with Bromine Species

Boosting the Faradaic Efficiency of Br--Mediated Photoelectrochemical Epoxidation by Local Acidity on α-Fe2O3

The redox mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) or electrochemical (EC) alkene oxidation process is a promising method to produce high value-added epoxides. However, due to the competitive reaction of water oxidation and overoxidation of the mediator, the utilization of the electricity is far below the ideal value, where the loss of epoxidation's faradaic efficiency (FE) is ≈50%. In this study, a Br-/HOBr-mediated method is developed to achieve a near-quantitative selectivity and ≈100% FE of styrene oxide on α-Fe2O3, in which low concentration of Br- as mediator and locally generated acidic micro-environment work together to produce the higher active HOBr species. A variety of styrene derivatives are investigated with satisfied epoxidation performance. Based on the analysis of local pH-dependent epoxidation FE and products distribution, the study further verified that HOBr serves as the true active mediator to generate the bromohydrin intermediate. It is believed that this strategy can greatly overcome the limitation of epoxidation FE to enable future industrial applications.

The determination of thallium in the environment: A review of conventional and advanced techniques and applications

Thallium (Tl) is a potential toxicity element that poses significant ecological and environmental risks. Recently, a substantial amount of Tl has been released into the environment through natural and human activities, which attracts increasing attention. The determination of this hazardous and trace element is crucial for controlling its pollution. This article summarizes the advancement and progress in optimizing Tl detection techniques, including atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), voltammetry, inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-based methods, spectrophotometry, and X-ray-based methods. Additionally, it introduces sampling and pretreatment methods such as diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), liquid-liquid extraction, solid phase extraction, and cloud point extraction. Among these techniques, ICP-mass spectrometry (MS) is the preferred choice for Tl detection due to its high precision in determining Tl as well as its species and isotopic composition. Meanwhile, some new materials and agents are employed in detection. The application of novel work electrode materials and chromogenic agents is discussed. Emphasis is placed on reducing solvent consumption and utilizing pretreatment techniques such as ultrasound-assisted processes and functionalized magnetic particles. Most detection is performed in aqueous matrices, while X-ray-based methods applied to solid phases are summarized which provide non-destructive analysis. This work improves the understanding of Tl determination technology while serving as a valuable resource for researchers seeking appropriate analytical techniques.

Selective Transformation of Micropollutants in Saline Wastewater by Peracetic Acid: The Overlooked Brominating Agents

Peracetic acid (PAA) is an emerging alternative disinfectant for saline waters; HOBr or HOCl is known as the sole species contributing to halogenation reactions during PAA oxidation and disinfection. However, new results herein strongly indicated that the brominating agents (e.g., BrCl, Br2, BrOCl, and Br2O) are generated at concentrations typically lower than HOCl and HOBr but played significant roles in micropollutants transformation. The presence of Cl- and Br- at environmentally relevant levels could greatly accelerate the micropollutants (e.g., 17α-ethinylestraiol (EE2)) transformation by PAA. The kinetic model and quantum chemical calculations collectively indicated that the reactivities of bromine species toward EE2 follow the order of BrCl > Br2 > BrOCl > Br2O > HOBr. In saline waters with elevated Cl- and Br- levels, these overlooked brominating agents influence bromination rates of more nucleophilic constituents of natural organic matter and increase the total organic bromine. Overall, this work refines our knowledge regarding the species-specific reactivity of brominating agents and highlights the critical roles of these agents in micropollutant abatement and disinfection byproduct formation during PAA oxidation and disinfection.

Mn(II) oxidation by the UV/chlorine system under near-neutral pH conditions: The important role of ClO· and ClO2

The oxidation kinetics of Mn(II) by free chlorine is relatively low under near-neutral pH conditions which limits the Mn removal efficiency in drinking water treatment. Therefore, this study investigated the oxidation efficiency of Mn(II) by the UV-enhanced chlorination (UV/chlorine) system and identified the responsible reactive radical species. The results show that the oxidation kinetic of Mn(II) was greatly enhanced by the UV/chlorine system under near-neutral pH or even acidic conditions. The pseudo-first-order reaction rate of Mn(II) at pH 8.0 (within the first 20 min) increased from 2.60 × 10-5 s-1 to 3.41 × 10-4 s-1. Based on the scavenging experiments and the steady-state kinetic modeling, ClO· and ClO2, whose steady-state concentration (∼10-10 M and ∼10-9 M, respectively at pH 8.0) was at least 4 orders of magnitude higher than that of HO· and Cl·, were recognized as the dominant reactive species contributing to the oxidation of Mn(II). Kinetic model calculations indicate that the contribution of ClO· to the oxidation of Mn(II) was consistently maintained above 70 %, and ClO2 also played an important role in the oxidation of Mn(II) especially under acidic and alkaline conditions. In addition, the background components of HCO3- and Cl- had negligible influence on the oxidation efficiency because they barely changed the concentration of the ClO· and ClO2. This study first demonstrates the important role of ClO2 in the oxidation of Mn(II) in the UV/chlorine system, and the possible role of ClO2 in the degradation of some organic pollutants needs to be carefully evaluated in the future.

Light- and H2O2-Mediated Redox Transformation of Thallium in Acidic Solutions Containing Iron: Kinetics and Mechanistic Insights

The redox transformation between the oxidation states of thallium (Tl(I) and Tl(III)) is the key to influencing its toxicity, reactivity, and mobility. Dissolved iron (Fe) is widely distributed in the environment and coexists at a high level with Tl in acidic mine drainages (AMDs). While ultraviolet (UV) light and H₂O₂ can directly (by inducing Tl(III) reduction) and indirectly (by inducing Fe(III) to form reactive intermediates) impact the redox cycles of Tl in Fe(III)-containing solutions, the kinetics and mechanism remain largely unclear. This study is the first to investigate the UV light- and H₂O₂-mediated Tl redox kinetics in acidic Fe(III) solutions. The results demonstrate that UV light and H₂O₂ could directly reduce Tl(III) to Tl(I), with the extent of reduction dependent on the presence of Fe(III) and the solution pH. At pH 3.0, Tl(I) was completely oxidized to Tl(III), which can be ascribed to the generation of hydroxyl radicals (^•OH) from the Fe(III) photoreduction or Fe(III) reaction with H₂O₂. The kinetics of Tl(I) oxidation were strongly affected by the Fe(III) concentration, pH, light source, and water matrix. Kinetic models incorporating Tl redox kinetics with Fe redox kinetics were developed and satisfactorily interpreted Tl(III) reduction and Tl(I) oxidation under the examined conditions. These findings emphasize the roles of the UV light- and H₂O₂-driven Fe cycles in influencing the redox state of Tl, with implications for determining its mobility and fate in the environment.
