Multimetallic CuCoNi Oxide Nanowires In Situ Grown on a Nickel Foam Substrate Catalyze Persulfate Activation via Mediating Electron Transfer

Performance enhancement and mechanism of electroenhanced peroxymonosulfate activation by single-atom Fe catalyst modified electrodes

Peroxymonosulfate-based electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (PMS-EAOPs) have great potential for sustainable water purification, so an in-depth understanding of its catalytic mechanism is imperative to facilitate its practical application. Herein, the performance enhancement and mechanism of electroenhanced PMS activation by single-atom Fe catalyst modified carbon felt was investigated. Compared with the anode, the cathode exhibited faster bisphenol A degradation (kcathode = 0.073 vs. kanode = 0.015 min-1), increased PMS consumption (98.8 vs. 10.3%), and an order of magnitude reduction of Fe dissolution (0.068 vs. 0.787 mg L-1). Mass transfer is a key factor limiting PMS activation, while the electrostriction of water in the hydrophobic region caused by cathode electric field (CEF) significantly increased mass transfer coefficient (km, cathode = 1.49 × 10-4 vs. km, anode = 2.68 × 10-5 m s-1). The enhanced activation of PMS is a synergistic result between electroactivation and catalyst-activation, which is controlled by the applied current density. 1O2 and direct electron transfer are the main active species and activation pathway, which achieve high degradation efficiency over pH 3 to 10. Density functional theory calculations prove CEF increases the adsorption energy, lengthens the O-O bond in PMS, and promotes charge transfer. A flow-through convection unit achieves sustainable operation with high removal efficiency (99.5% to 97.5%), low electrical energy consumption (0.15 kWh log-1 m-3), and low Fe leaching (0.81% of the total single atom Fe). This work reveals the critical role of electric fields in modulating Fenton-like catalytic activity, which may advance the development of advanced oxidation processes and other electrocatalytic applications.

A 2.5-Dimensional biomimetic dual-functional bifacial-evaporator for high efficient evaporation and water purification

Nowadays, solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SISG) is a sustainable and green technology for mitigating the water shortage crisis. Nevertheless, SISG is suffering from the enrichment of volatile organic compounds in condensate water and non-volatile organic compounds in feed water in practical applications. Herein, taking inspiration from nature, a dual-functional bifacial-CuCoNi (Bi-CuCoNi) evaporator with a special biomimetic urchin-like microstructure was successfully prepared. The unique design with 2.5-Dimensional bifacial working sides and urchin-like light absorption microstructure provided the Bi-CuCoNi evaporator with remarkable evaporation performance (1.91 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 kW m-2). Significantly, due to the urchin-like microstructure, the adequately exposed catalytic active sites enabled the Bi-CuCoNi/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system to degrade non-volatile organic pollutants (removal rate of 99.3 % in feed water, close to 100 % in condensate water) and the volatile organic pollutants (removal rate of 99.1 % in feed water, 98.2 % in condensate water) simultaneously. Moreover, the Bi-CuCoNi evaporator achieved non-radical pathway degradation at whole-stages. The dual-functional evaporator successfully integrated advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) into SISG, providing a new idea for high-quality freshwater production from polluted wastewater. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: Inspired by nature, a dual-functional bifacial CuCoNi evaporator with a special biomimetic urchin-like microstructure formed by CuCoNi oxide nanowires grown on nickel foam by the hydrothermal synthesis method was successfully prepared. The prepared Bi-CuCoNi evaporator can effectively degrade organic pollutants in feed water and condensate water simultaneously during SISG, thus generating high-quality fresh water. Meanwhile, the health risks associated with the accumulation of organic pollutants in water during traditional SISG were reduced via green and sustainable way. The spatial 2.5-Dimensional structural design of Bi-CuCoNi provided new insights for achieving efficient water evaporation and fresh water generation from various polluted wastewater.

Sludge-derived hydrochar modulates complete nonradical electron transfer in peroxydisulfate activation via pyrrolic-N and carbon defect: Implication for degrading electron-rich ionizable anilines compounds

Nonradical electron transfer process (ETP) is a promising pathway for pollutant degradation in peroxydisulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PDS-AOPs). However, there is a critical bottleneck to trigger ETP by sludge-derived hydrochar due to its negatively charged surface, inferior porosity and electrical conductivity. Herein, pyrrolic-N doped and carbon defected sludge-derived hydrochar (SDHC-N) was constructed for PDS activation to degrade anilines ionizable organic compounds (IOC) through complete nonradical ETP oxidation. Degradation of anilines IOC was not only affected by the electron-donating capacity but also proton concentration in solution because of the ionizable amino group (-NH2). Diverse effects including proton favor, insusceptible and inhibition were observed. Impressively, addition of HCO3 with strong proton binding capacity boosted aniline degradation nearly 10 times. Moreover, characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrated that pyrrolic-N increased electron density and created positively charged surface, profoundly promoting generation of SDHC-N-S2O82-* complexes. More delocalized electrons around carbon defect could enhance electron mobility. This work guides a rational design of sludge-derived hydrochar to mediate nonradical ETP oxidation, and provides insights into the impacts of proton on anilines IOC degradation.

The mechanism differences between sulfadiazine degradation and antibiotic resistant bacteria inactivation by iron-based graphitic biochar and peroxydisulfate system

In this study, the activation of peroxydisulfate (PS) by K2FeO4-activation biochar (KFeB) and acid-picking K2FeO4-activation biochar (AKFeB) was investigated to reveal the mechanism differences between iron site and graphitic structure in sulfadiazine (SDZ) degradation and ARB inactivation, respectively. KFeB/PS and AKFeB/PS systems had similar degradation property towards SDZ, but only KFeB/PS system showed excellent bactericidal property. The mechanism study demonstrated that dissolved SDZ was degraded through electron transfer pathway mediated by graphitic structure, while suspended ARB was inactivated through free radicals generated by iron-activated PS, accompanied by excellent removal on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The significant decrease in conjugative transfer frequency indicated the reduced horizontal gene transfer risk of ARGs after treatment with KFeB/PS system. Transcriptome data suggested that membrane protein channel disruption and adenosine triphosphate synthesis inhibition were key reasons for conjugative transfer frequency reduction. Continuous flow reactor of KFeB/PS system can efficiently remove antibiotics and ARB, implying the potential application in practical wastewater purification. In conclusion, this study provides novel insights for classified and collaborative control of antibiotics and ARB by carbon-based catalysts driven persulfate advanced oxidation technology.

Peroxymonosulfate activation by iron-cobalt bimetallic phosphide modified nickel foam for efficient dye degradation

Novel catalysts with multiple active sites and rapid separation are required to effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the removal of organic pollutants from water. Therefore, an integrated catalyst for PMS activation was developed by directly forming Co-Fe Prussian blue analogs on a three-dimensional porous nickel foam (NF), which were subsequently phosphorylated to obtain cobalt-iron bimetallic phosphide (FeCoP@NF). The FeCoP@NF/PMS system efficiently degraded dye wastewater within 20 min. The system exhibited excellent catalytic degradation over a broad pH range and at high dye concentrations due to the presence of unique asymmetrically charged Coa+ and Pb- dual active sites formed by cobalt phosphides within FeCoP@NF. These active sites significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of PMS. The activation mechanism of PMS involves phosphorylation that accelerates electron transfer from FeCoP@NF to PMS, to generate SO4·-, ·OH, O2·-, and 1O2 active species. Three-dimensional FeCoP@NF could be readily recycled and showed good stability for PMS activation. In this study, a highly efficient, stable, and readily recyclable integrated catalyst was developed. This catalyst system effectively resolves the separation and recovery issues associated with conventional powder catalysts and has a wide range of potential applications in wastewater treatment.

In-situ growth of Mn-Ni3S2 on nickel foam for catalytic ozonation of p-nitrophenol

In this study, a new catalyst for catalytic ozonation was obtained by in-situ growth of Mn-Ni3S2 nanosheets on the surface of nickel foam (NF). The full degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) was accomplished under optimal conditions in 40 min. The effects of material dosage, ozone dosage, pH and the presence of inorganic anions on the degradation efficiency of PNP were investigated. ESR analysis showed that singlet oxygen (1O2) and superoxide radical (O2•-) are the main contributors of PNP degradation. This study offers a new combination of supported catalysts with high efficiency and easy recovery, which provides a new idea for wastewater treatment.

Selective removal of thiosulfate from coke oven gas desulfurization wastewater by catalytic wet air oxidation with manganese-based oxide from spent ternary lithium-ion batteries

Selective and efficient removal of thiosulfates (S2O32-) to recover high-purity and value-added thiocyanate products by fractional crystallization process is a promising route for the resource treatment of coke oven gas desulfurization wastewater. Herein, catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO), with manganese-based oxide synthesized from spent ternary lithium-ion batteries (MnOx-LIBs), was proposed to selectively remove S2O32- from desulfurization wastewater. 98.0 % of S2O32- is selectively removed by the MnOx-LIBs CWAO system, which was 4.1 times that of the MnOx CWAO system. The synergistic effect among multiple metals from spent LIBs induces the enlarged specific surface area, increased reactive sites and formation of oxygen vacancy, promoting the adsorption and activation of O2, thereby realizing high-efficiency removal of S2O32-. The satisfactory selective removal efficiency can be maintained in the proposed system under complex environmental conditions. Notably, the proposed system is cost-effective and applicable to actual wastewater, in which 81.2 % of S2O32- is selectively removed from coke oven gas desulfurization wastewater. More importantly, compared with the typical processes, the proposed process is simpler and more environmentally-friendly. This work provides an alternative route to selectively remove S2O32- from coke oven gas desulfurization wastewater, expecting to drive the development of resource utilization of coke oven gas desulfurization wastewater.

Heteroatom substitution enhances generation and reactivity of surface-activated peroxydisulfate complexes for catalytic fenton-like reactions

Peroxydisulfate (PDS)-based Fenton-like reactions are promising advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to degrade recalcitrant organic water pollutants. Current research predominantly focuses on augmenting the generation of reactive species (e.g., surface-activated PDS complexes (PDS*) to improve treatment efficiency, but overlooks the potential benefits of enhancing the reactivity of these species. Here, we enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity by incorporating Zn into CuO catalyst lattice, which resulted in 99% degradation of 4-chlorophenol within only 10 min. Zn increased PDS* generation by nearly doubling PDS adsorption while maintaining similar PDS to PDS* conversion efficiency, and induced higher PDS* reactivity than the common catalyst CuO, as indicated by a 4.1-fold larger slope between adsorbed PDS and open circuit potential of a catalytic electrode. Cu-O-Zn formation upshifts the d-band center of Cu sites and lowers the energy barrier for PDS adsorption and sulfate desorption, resulting in enhanced PDS* generation and reactivity. Overall, this study informs strategies to enhance PDS* reactivity and design highly active catalysts for efficient AOPs.

New Insights into the Role of Humic Acid in Permanganate Oxidation of Diclofenac: A Novel Electron Transfer Mechanism

Humic acid (HA) ubiquitously existing in aquatic environments has been reported to significantly impact permanganate (KMnO4) decontamination processes. However, the underlying mechanism of the KMnO4/HA system remained elusive. In this study, an enhancing effect of HA on the KMnO4 oxidation of diclofenac (DCF) was observed over a wide solution pH range of 5-9. Surprisingly, the mechanism of HA-induced enhancement varied with solution pH. Quenching and chemical probing experiments revealed that manganese intermediates (Mn(III)-HA and MnO2) were responsible for the enhancement under acidic conditions but not under neutral and alkaline conditions. By combining KMnO4 decomposition, galvanic oxidation process experiments, electrochemical tests, and FTIR and XPS analysis, it was interestingly found that HA could effectively mediate the electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4 in neutral and alkaline solutions, which was reported for the first time. The formation of an organic-catalyst complex (i.e., HA-DCF) with lower reduction potential than the parent DCF was proposed to be responsible for the accelerated electron transfer from DCF to KMnO4. This electron transfer likely occurred within the complex molecule formed through the interaction between HA-DCF and KMnO4 (i.e., HA-DCF-KMnO4). These results will help us gain a more comprehensive understanding of the role of HA in the KMnO4 oxidation processes.

Efficient activation of peroxymonosulfate by Fe single-atom: The key role of Fe-pyrrolic nitrogen coordination in generating singlet oxygen and high-valent Fe species

Nitrogen-doped carbon matrix single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the efficient removal of organic pollutants have attracted widespread attention. However, the ligand structure and the origin of the high activity between nitrogen species and single-atoms remain elusive. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon matrix iron single-atom catalysts (Fe/NC-SACs) that exhibit high catalytic reactivity (98.2% SMX degradation in 5 min), broad pH resistance (pH 3.0-11.1), high stability, and sustainable water treatment capacity are reported. High-valent iron (Fe IV=O) and singlet oxygen (1O2) were the reactive oxygen species observed. The electrochemical results demonstrated the generation of catalyst-PMS complexes. The DFT calculations revealed that Fe-pyrrolic N4 was the best ligand for PMS, exhibiting the highest adsorption energy, bond length variation and electron transfer capacity. The central Fe single atom and the carbon electrons adjacent to the pyrrolic N were the reactive sites of the PMS. The main source of 1O2 was the oxidation of PMS. This work provides guidance for the discovery of high-performance catalysts and provides a single-atom catalyst that can be used for practical environmental purification.

Development of MoS2-stainless steel catalyst by 3D printing for efficient destruction of organics via peroxymonosulfate activation

Herein, a novel MoS2-stainless steel composite material was first synthetized via a 3D printing method (3DP MoS2-SS) for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and organics degradation. Compared with MoS2-SS powder/PMS system (0.37 g/(m2/min)), 4.3-fold higher kFLO/SBET value was obtained in 3DP MoS2-SS/PMS system (1.60 g/(m2/min), resulting from the superior utilization of active sites. We observed that 3DP MoS2-SS significantly outperformed the 3DP SS due to the enhanced electron transfer rate and increased active sites. Moreover, Mo4+ facilitated the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle, resulting in the rapid degradation of florfenicol (FLO). Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectra indicated that •OH, SO4•-, O2•- and 1O2 were involved in the degradation of FLO. The effect of influencing factors on the degradation of FLO were evaluated, and the optimized degradation efficiency of 98.69% was achieved at 1 mM PMS and pH of 3.0. Six degradation products were detected by UPLC/MS analyses and several possible degradation pathways were proposed to be the cleavage of C-N bonds, dechlorination, hydrolysis, defluorination and hydroxylation. In addition, 3DP MoS2-SS/PMS system also demonstrated superior degradation performance for 2-chlorophenol, acetaminophen, ibuprofen and carbamazepine. This study provided deep insights into the MoS2-SS catalyst prepared by 3DP technology for PMS activation and FLO-polluted water treatment.

Prussian blue analogues-derived zero valent iron to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for phenol degradation triggered via reactive oxygen species and high-valent iron-oxo complexes

It is of great significance to develop the effective technique to treat phenol-containing wastewater. Herein, Fe-based prussian blue analogues-derived zero valent iron (ZVI) was successfully synthesized by one-step calcination method. Owing to high specific surface area and rich active sites, ZVI-2 possessed excellent performance in charge transfer. Notably, in comparison with conventional ZVI and Fe2+, ZVI-2 can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for achieving rapid degradation of phenol, and the highest removal efficiency of phenol reached 94.9% within 24 min. More importantly, developed ZVI-2/PMS oxidation system with good stability displayed strong anti-interference capability. Interestingly, Fe0 loaded on the surface of ZVI-2 can efficiently break the O-O bond of PMS to generate reactive oxygen species (i.e., SO4•-, OH•, O2•- and 1O2). As main adsorption sites of PMS, the existence of oxygen vacancy promote the formation of high-valent transition metal complexes (namely ZVI-2≡Fe4+=O). Under the combined action of reactive oxygen species and ZVI-2≡Fe4+=O, phenol can be eventually degraded into CO2 and H2O. The possible degradation pathways of phenol were also investigated. Furthermore, proposed ZVI-2/PMS oxidation system displayed great potential for application in the field of wastewater treatment. All in all, current work provided a valuable reference for design and application of Fe-based catalysts in PS-AOPs.

Bifunctional Solar Evaporator with Co/N-Doped Graphene Oxide for Synergistic Steam Generation and Organic Pollutant Degradation

Solar-driven interfacial steam generation (SISG) is a promising technology for alleviating freshwater shortage. However, when the SISG technology is applied to wastewater treatment, the contaminant would be enriched in residual bulk water. Herein, a dual-functional evaporator was constructed via tactfully decorating Co/N-doped graphene oxide (GO) on melamine foam (MF), which can simultaneously achieve efficient vapor production and source water purification. N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) endowed evaporators with powerful light absorption and water transport performance, guaranteeing an evaporation rate of 2.02 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation. Meanwhile, the catalytic activity of the carbon layer was adjusted by the N dopant and embedded Co particles, providing abundant active sites to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS). When treating the solution containing sulfamethoxazole (SMX), no SMX residues were detected in the remaining bulk water (up to 100% SMX degradation efficiency within 60 min), demonstrating that reactive oxygen species (ROS) were generated to attack SMX in the source water. The bifunctional evaporator successfully combined SISG and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), providing an ingenious strategy for solving the problem of wastewater enrichment during SISG.

Selective Removal of Organic Pollutants in Groundwater and Surface Water by Persulfate-Assisted Advanced Oxidation: The Role of Electron-Donating Capacity

The efficiency of persulfate-assisted advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs) in degrading organic pollutants is affected by the electron-donating capability of organic substances present in the water source. In this study, we systematically investigate the electron-donating capacity (EDC) difference between groundwater and surface water and demonstrate the dependence of removal efficiency on the EDC of target water by PS-AOPs with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a catalyst. Laboratory analyses and field experiments reveal that the CNT/PS system exhibits higher performance in organic pollutant removal in groundwater with a high concentration of phenols, compared to surface water, which is rich in quinones. We attribute this disparity to the selective electron transfer pathway induced by potential difference between PS-CNT and organic substance-CNT intermediates, which preferentially degrade organic substances with stronger electron-donating capability. This study provides valuable insights into the inherent selective removal mechanism and application scenarios of electron transfer process-dominated PS-AOPs for water treatment based on the electron-donating capacity of organic pollutants.

Copper Nanowire Networks: An Effective Electrochemical Peroxymonosulfate Activator toward Nitrogenous Pollutant Abatement

Herein, we developed an electrochemical filtration system for effective and selective abatement of nitrogenous organic pollutants via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Highly conductive and porous copper nanowire (CuNW) networks were constructed to serve simultaneously as catalyst, electrode, and filtration media. In one demonstration of the CuNW network's capability, a single pass through a CuNW filter (τ < 2 s) degraded 94.8% of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) at an applied potential of -0.4 V vs SHE. The exposed {111} crystal plane of CuNW triggered atomic hydrogen (H*) generation on sites, which contributed to effective PMS reduction. Meanwhile, with the involvement of SMX, a Cu-N bond was formed by the interactions between the -NH₂ group of SMX and the Cu sites of CuNW, accompanied by the redox cycling of Cu²⁺/Cu⁺, which was facilitated by the applied potential. The different charges of the active Cu sites made it easier to withdraw electrons and promote PMS oxidation. Theoretical calculations and experimental results were combined to suggest a mechanism for pollution abatement with CuNW networks. The results showed that system efficacy for the degradation of a wide array of nitrogenous pollutants was robust across a broad range of solution pH and complex aqueous matrices. The flow-through operation of the CuNW filter outperformed conventional batch electrochemistry due to convection-enhanced mass transport. This study provides a new strategy for environmental remediation by integrating state-of-the-art material science, advanced oxidation processes, and microfiltration technology.

Redox-Induced In Situ Growth of MnO2 with Rich Oxygen Vacancies over Monolithic Copper Foam for Boosting Toluene Combustion

Catalytic combustion has been known to be an effective technique in volatile organic compound (VOC) abatement. Developing monolithic catalysts with high activity at low temperatures is vital yet challenging in industrial applications. Herein, monolithic MnO₂-O_v/CF catalysts were fabricated via the in situ growth of K₂CuFe(CN)₆ (CuFePBA, a family of metal-organic frames) over copper foam (CF) followed by a redox-etching route. The as-synthesized monolith MnO₂-O_v-0.04/CF catalyst displays a superior low-temperature activity (T_90% = 215 °C) and robust durability for toluene elimination even in the presence of 5 vol % water. Experimental results reveal that the CuFePBA template not only guides the in situ growth of δ-MnO₂ with high loading over CF but also acts as a source of dopant to create more oxygen vacancies and weaken the strength of the Mn-O bond, which considerably improves the oxygen activation ability of δ-MnO₂ and consequently boosts the low-temperature catalytic activity of the monolith MnO₂-O_v-0.04/CF toward toluene oxidation. In addition, the reaction intermediate and proposed mechanism in the MnO₂-O_v-0.04/CF mediated catalytic oxidation process were investigated. This study provides new insights into the development of highly active monolithic catalysts for the low-temperature oxidation of VOCs.

Peroxymonosulfate-Activation-Induced Phase Transition of Mn3O4 Nanospheres on Nickel Foam with Enhanced Catalytic Performance

The transformations of physicochemical properties on manganese oxides during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation are vital factors to be concerned. In this work, Mn₃O₄ nanospheres homogeneously loaded on nickel foam are prepared, and the catalytic performance for PMS activation is evaluated by degrading a target pollutant, Acid Orange 7, in aqueous solution. The factors including catalyst loading, nickel foam substrate, and degradation conditions have been investigated. Additionally, the transformations of crystal structure, surface chemistry, and morphology on the catalyst have been explored. The results show that sufficient catalyst loading and the support of nickel foam play significant roles in the catalytic reactivity. A phase transition from spinel Mn₃O₄ to layered birnessite, accompanied by a morphological change from nanospheres to laminae, is clarified during the PMS activation. The electrochemical analysis reveals that more favorable electronic transfer and ionic diffusion occur after the phase transition so as to enhance catalytic performance. The generated SO₄^•- and •OH radicals through redox reactions of Mn are demonstrated to account for the pollutant degradation. This work will provide new understandings of PMS activation by manganese oxides with high catalytic activity and reusability.

The debatable role of singlet oxygen in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes

Singlet oxygen (¹O₂) attracts much attention in persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-AOPs), because of its wide pH tolerance and high selectivity toward electron-rich organics. However, there are conflicts about the ¹O₂ role in PS-AOPs on several aspects, including the formation of different key reactive oxygen species (ROS) at similar active sites, pH dependence, broad-spectrum activity, and selectivity in the elimination of organic pollutants. To a large degree, these conflicts root in the drawbacks of the methods to identify and evaluate the role of ¹O₂. For example, the quenchers of ¹O₂ have high reactivity to other ROS and persulfate as well. In addition, electron transfer process (ETP) also selectively oxidizes organics, having a misleading effect on the identification of ¹O₂. Therefore, in this review, we summarized and discussed some basic properties of ¹O₂, the debatable role of ¹O₂ in PS-AOPs on multiple aspects, and the methods and their drawbacks to identify and evaluate the role of ¹O₂. On the whole, this review aims to better understand the role of ¹O₂ in PS-AOPs and further help with its reasonable utilization.
