Storm Event Suspended Sediment-Discharge Hysteresis and Controls in Agricultural Watersheds: Implications for Watershed Scale Sediment Management

High-frequency monitoring during rainstorm events reveals nitrogen sources and transport in a rural catchment

Rural areas lacking essential sewage treatment facilities and collection systems often experience eutrophication due to elevated nutrient loads. Understanding nitrogen (N) sources and transport mechanisms in rural catchments is crucial for improving water quality and mitigating downstream export loads, particularly during storm events. To further elucidate the sources, pathways, and transport mechanisms of N from a rural catchment with intensive agricultural activities during storm events, we conducted an analysis of 21 events through continuous sampling over two rainy seasons in a small rural catchment from the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The results revealed that ammonia-N (NH4+-N) and nitrate-N (NO3--N) exhibited distinct behaviors during rainstorm events, with NO3--N accounting for the primary nitrogen loss, its load being approximately forty times greater than that of NH4+-N. Through examinations of the concentration-discharge (c-Q) relationships, the findings revealed that, particularly in prolonged rainstorms, NH4+-N exhibited source limited pattern (b = -0.13, P < 0.01), while NO3--N displayed transport limited pattern (b = -0.21, P < 0.01). The figure-eight hysteresis pattern was prevalent for both NH4+-N and NO3--N (38.1% and 52.0%, respectively), arising from intricate interactions among diverse sources and pathways. For NO3--N, the hysteresis pattern shifted from clockwise under short-duration rainstorms to counter-clockwise under long-duration rainstorms, whereas hysteresis remained consistently clockwise for NH4+-N. The hysteresis analysis further suggests that the duration of rainstorms modifies hydrological connectivity, thereby influencing the transport processes of N. These insights provide valuable information for the development of targeted management strategies to reduce storm nutrient export in rural catchments.

Gross yield driving the mass fluxes of fishery drugs: Evidence of occurrence from full aquaculture cycle in lower Yangtze River Basin

Expanding aquaculture has generated pollutants like fishery drugs in wastewater, which affects the aquatic environments and hinders sustainable development of aquaculture. To evaluate the occurrence, mass fluxes and production factors of fishery drugs in aquaculture, full-aquaculture-cycle monitoring in finfish and crustacean wastewater was conducted in the lower Yangtze River Basin, and 28 pesticides and 15 antibiotics were detected. The results showed that individual fishery drugs varied from ppt to ppb levels. Among them, sulfonamides were dominant with a mean concentration of 105.95 ± 4.13 ng·L-1 in finfish aquacultural wastewater, and insecticides were prevailing in crustacean aquacultural wastewater with a content of 146.56 ± 0.66 ng·L-1. Since the susceptibility to finfish disease determined the aquaculture practice, there were significant differences between two types of aquacultural wastewater. Finfish aquacultural wastewater contained more drugs and reached peak earlier in rapid-growth period, yet crustacean aquacultural wastewater peaked at the harvest period, to prevent against disease. Meanwhile, higher ecological risk, especially for florfenicol, were found in finfish wastewater. With 6 production factors from Good Aquaculture Practice, the gross yield was the most influential factor of drug mass flux, explaining 98 % variance by stepwise regression. Apart from increasing concentrations of fishery drugs in wastewater, regional high-yield aquaculture also significantly impacted the corresponding mass flux. As estimated by linear regression, 1.63 tons of target drugs would be discharged by 1 Mt. aquatic products, and 7.77 tons were discharged from aquaculture in the lower Yangtze River Basin in 2021. This is the first report to quantify mass fluxes of fishery drugs and to highlight gross yield as the most influential factor, which provides guidance for the supervision and regulation of sustainable aquaculture.

The spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment phosphorus attenuation and release in impacted stream catchments

Sediments can attenuate phosphorus (P) from overlying water and reduce trophic status in zero and first order ditches and streams. These features can be considered as intermediate mitigation features between P mobilised from land, and onward delivery to river systems, if the risk of chemical P release from sediments is minimal. However, risk assessments are rarely based on temporal scale dynamics and especially at fine scale in both sediment and water column environments. In this study, in eutrophic stream catchments, bed sediments were tested fortnightly and spatially over one year for EPC0 (to derive phosphate exchange potential-PEP) and for P across a spectrum from labile to recalcitrant fractions. At the same time stream discharge and P concentrations were measured synchronously at high frequency and resolved to 1-hour intervals and indicated high water quality pressures at all flow rates. PEP indicated spatial and temporal changes most likely caused by periods of source disconnection/reconnection and sediment mobilisation during storm events, moving from periods of high attenuation potential to near saturation. Despite these spatial and temporal changes, PEP did not indicate much potential for chemical P release from the sediments (distributing mostly below or close to zero). However, this may be a misleading risk assessment by itself as physical P release, especially of the labile bicarbonate-dithionite (B-D) P fraction of sediments, was a more dominant process mobilised during storm events reducing by up to 84 % during a succession of summer storm events. The total P and total reactive P loads monitored leaving the catchments were coincident with these changes. The specific downstream trophic effects of this episodic P release will need to be assessed in terms of its bioavailability, in combination with other more noted diffuse and point P source processes.

Long-term water quality monitoring in agricultural catchments in Sweden: Impact of climatic drivers on diffuse nutrient loads

Water quality related to non-point source pollution continues to pose challenges in agricultural landscapes, despite two completed cycles of Water Framework Directive actions by farmers and landowners. Future climate projections will cause new challenges in landscape hydrology and subsequently, the potential responses in water quality. Investigating the nutrient trends in surface waters and studying the efficiency of mitigation measures revealed that loads and measures are highly variable both spatially and temporally in catchments with different agro-climatic and environmental conditions. In Sweden, nitrogen and phosphorus loads in eight agricultural catchments (470-3300 ha) have been intensively monitored for >20 years. This study investigated the relationship between precipitation, air temperature, and discharge patterns in relation to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) loads at catchment outlets. The time series data analysis was carried out by integrating Mann-Kendall test, Pettitt break-points, and Generalized Additive Model. The results showed that the nutrient loads highly depend on water discharge, which had large variation in annual average (158-441 mm yr^-1). The annual average loads were also considerably different among the catchments with total N (TN) loads ranging from 6.76 to 35.73 kg ha^-1, and total P (TP) loads ranging from 0.11 to 1.04 kg ha^-1. The climatic drivers were highly significant indicators of nutrient loads but with varying degree of significance. Precipitation (28-962 mm yr^-1) was a significant indicator of TN loads in five catchments (loamy sand/sandy loam) while annual average temperature (6.5-8.7 °C yr^-1) was a significant driver of TN loads in six out of eight catchments. TP loads were associated with precipitation in two catchments and significantly correlated to water discharge in six catchments. Considering the more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events, it is necessary to tailor N and P mitigation measures to future climate-change features of precipitation, temperature, and discharge.

Evaluation of Chemcatcher® passive samplers for pesticide monitoring using high-frequency catchment scale data

Passive samplers (PS) have been proposed as an enhanced water quality monitoring solution in rivers, but their performance against high-frequency data over the longer term has not been widely explored. This study compared the performance of Chemcatcher® passive sampling (PS) devices with high-frequency sampling (HFS: 7-hourly to daily) in two dynamic rivers over 16 months. The evaluation was based on the acid herbicides MCPA (2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid), mecoprop-P, fluroxypyr and triclopyr. The impact of river discharge parameters on Chemcatcher® device performance was also explored. Mixed effects modelling showed that time-weighted mean concentration (TWMC) and flow-weighted mean concentration (FWMC) values obtained by the HFS approach were both significantly higher (p < 0.001) than TWMC values determined from PS regardless of river or pesticide. Modelling also showed that TWMC_PS values were more similar to TWMC_HFS than FWMC_HFS values. However, further testing revealed that MCPA TWMC values from HFS and PS were not significantly different (p > 0.05). There was little indication that river flow parameters altered PS performance-some minor effects were not significant or consistent. Despite this, the PS recovery of very low concentrations indicated that Chemcatcher® devices may be used to evaluate the presence/absence and magnitude of acid herbicides in hydrologically dynamic rivers in synoptic type surveys where space and time coverage is required. However, a period of calibration of the devices in each river would be necessary if they were intended to provide a quantitative review of pesticide concentration as compared with HFS approaches.

Hysteresis analysis reveals dissolved carbon concentration - discharge relationships during and between storm events

The dissolved carbon concentration, which is responsible for aquatic ecosystem productivity and water quality, is tightly coupled with hydrological processes. Excess dissolved carbon may exacerbate eutrophication and hypoxia in aquatic ecosystems and lead to deterioration of water quality. Storm events dominate the dynamics of dissolved carbon concentrations, and this nonlinear behavior exhibits significant time scale dependence. Here, we identified inter- and intra-event variability in the dissolved carbon concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationship in an agriculture-intensive catchment. The driving factors of C-Q hysteresis patterns for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and organic carbon (DOC) were quantified by redundancy analysis combined with hierarchical partitioning. At the inter-event scale, DIC exhibited mainly clockwise hysteresis, indicating an exhaustible, proximal source (e.g., groundwater). However, DOC hysteresis was generally counter-clockwise, indicating distal and plentiful sources (e.g., soil water) in the agricultural catchment. Hierarchical partitioning showed that total rainfall, peak discharge and flood intensity explained 28.38% of the total variation in C-Q hysteresis for DIC and 39.87% for DOC at the inter-event scale. At the intra-event scale, time series analysis of dissolved carbon concentration and discharge indicated the interconversion of supply limitation to transport limitation, which depends on the activation of the specific DIC or DOC source zones. These findings provide significant insights into understanding the dynamics of dissolved carbon during storm periods and are important for targeted watershed management practices aimed at reducing carbon loading to surface waters.

Downstream Modification of Mercury in Diverse River Systems Underscores the Role of Local Conditions in Fish Bioaccumulation

Fish consumption advisories for mercury (Hg) are common in rivers, highlighting connections between landscape sources of Hg and downstream fluvial ecosystems. Though watershed conditions can influence concentrations of Hg in smaller streams, how Hg changes downstream through larger rivers and how these changes associate with Hg concentrations in fish is not well understood. Here we present a continuum of concentrations and yields of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) from small tributary systems draining diverse western Canadian headwater landscapes through to major transboundary rivers. We associate these downstream patterns with THg concentrations in tissues of resident fish in major rivers. Mean concentrations and yields of unfiltered THg from over 80 monitored tributaries and major rivers were highly variable in space ranging from 0.28 to 120 ng L−1 and 0.39 to 170 µg ha−1 d−1, respectively. Using spatial data and a hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified three broad categories of tributary catchment conditions. Linear mixed modeling analysis with water quality variables revealed significantly lower THg concentrations in tributaries draining cordillera-foothills (geometric mean: 0.76 ng L−1) regions relative to those draining forested (1.5 ng L−1) and agriculturalized landscapes (2.4 ng L−1), suggesting that sources and mobility of THg in soils and surface waters were different between landscapes. However, these concentration differences were not sustained downstream in major rivers as local sources and sinks of THg in river channels smoothed differences between landscape types. Extensive fish tissue monitoring in major rivers and ANCOVA analysis found that site-specific, river water THg and MeHg concentrations and local catchment conditions were stronger associates of THg concentrations in fish than broader trends in rivers within and across landscape classes. Consequently, site-specific, targeted monitoring of THg and MeHg concentrations in water and fish is a preferred study design when assessing regional-level patterns in fish tissue concentrations.

Water-sediment synergistic relationship in the flood season in the coarse sand source regions of the loess plateau, China

A number of studies have been conducted to determine the relationships between runoff and sediment under different conditions. However, the water-sediment synergistic relationship, which refers to the degree of intervention between the runoff and suspended sediment transport processes in the flood season, must be further analyzed. This study proposed the concept of the synergy degree between water and sediment based on the discipline of synergetics created by Haken (Haken, 1983). The flood and suspended sediment transport processes in the flood season and the measured water-sediment coordination levels were adopted in this study to obtain their synergy degree by taking as an example the largest and most continuous region from the Huangfu River to the Jialu River in the coarse sand source regions of the Loess Plateau. The results of this investigation are as follows. The degree of synergy between runoff and suspended sediment transport was below 0.722 from 1958 to 2016. Approximately 70% of the flood events in the five river basins had poor degrees of synergy between the flow and sediment processes in the flood season. Moreover, the synergy degrees of the water-sediment relationship were relatively low in the runoff and suspended sediment transport processes in the flood season due to the low order degrees of these two process subsystems. The low synergistic relationship between these two subsystems shows that the coordination and buffering abilities between the flood and suspended sediment transport processes were weak. These findings demonstrate the successful adoption of synergetics to ascertain the water-sediment synergistic relationship and also provided critical information for designing water conveyance systems with high sediment concentrations for irrigation in the coarse sand source regions of the Loess Plateau, China.

Combining sediment fingerprinting and hydro-sedimentary monitoring to assess suspended sediment provenance in a mid-mountainous Mediterranean catchment

Soil erosion and sediment transport are controlled by complex factors promoting variable responses in catchment's erosion rates and sediment yields. To mitigate eventual negative effects derived from altered fluxes, integrated catchment management plans should assess the sediment cascade from upstream erosive processes, sediment mobilization through hillslopes and within the channel, up to downstream sediment yields. This study links hydro-sedimentary dynamics with sediment fingerprinting source ascription in a mid-mountainous Mediterranean catchment during five hydrological years (2013-2018). Soil colour parameters and fallout radionuclides were used as tracers to predict dominant suspended sediment sources using (i) a Bayesian mixing model (MixSIAR) and (ii) an End Member Mixing Analysis (EMMA). MixSIAR suggested that crops were the dominant source in most of the collected samples. EMMA showed similar results, clustering all except one sediment samples close to the crop and channel bank signatures. In addition, a quantitative hysteresis index was calculated and floods were clustered in function of their hydro-sedimentary characteristics. Despite different patterns were associated to each of the four identified clusters (e.g. different sediment loads and maximum suspended sediment concentrations), correlation between sediment origin and hydro-sedimentary variables was not significant due to the little seasonal variation in source type ascription.

A multi-model approach to assessing the impacts of catchment characteristics on spatial water quality in the Great Barrier Reef catchments

Water quality monitoring programs often collect large amounts of data with limited attention given to the assessment of the dominant drivers of spatial and temporal water quality variations at the catchment scale. This study uses a multi-model approach: a) to identify the influential catchment characteristics affecting spatial variability in water quality; and b) to predict spatial variability in water quality more reliably and robustly. Tropical catchments in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) area, Australia, were used as a case study. We developed statistical models using 58 catchment characteristics to predict the spatial variability in water quality in 32 GBR catchments. An exhaustive search method coupled with multi-model inference approaches were used to identify important catchment characteristics and predict the spatial variation in water quality across catchments. Bootstrapping and cross-validation approaches were used to assess the uncertainty in identified important factors and robustness of multi-model structure, respectively. The results indicate that water quality variables were generally most influenced by the natural characteristics of catchments (e.g., soil type and annual rainfall), while anthropogenic characteristics (i.e., land use) also showed significant influence on dissolved nutrient species (e.g., NO_X, NH₄ and FRP). The multi-model structures developed in this work were able to predict average event-mean concentration well, with Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient ranging from 0.68 to 0.96. This work provides data-driven evidence for catchment managers, which can help them develop effective water quality management strategies.

Degree of Anthropogenic Land Disturbance Controls Fluvial Sediment Hysteresis

Storm events dominate sediment delivery to stream corridors, but the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on altering the sources, pathways, and timing of delivery remain uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed 849 events from over a decade of high-frequency turbidity data across five watersheds in an urbanization gradient. Sensing results suggested that hysteresis patterns evolved with land use from clockwise (low-rural) to figure-eight (high-rural) to counter-clockwise (high-urban), indicating a disturbance-driven shift of sediment provenance from proximal to distal. Sediment loading pathways in the lowest-disturbance rural watershed were dominated by a single hysteresis shape (>90% of export by clockwise events), whereas the most-disturbed urban basin had the greatest variability in loading pathways (∼25% of export by clockwise, counter-clockwise, figure-eight, and complex events, respectively). Finally, wastewater treatment facilities modulated the release of "hungry-water" baseflow, causing more-rapid periods of high streamflow variance in catchments with a treatment facility (∼4 h period) than in those without (∼6 h period). Together, our results indicate that anthropogenic disturbances, including tile drainage, impervious surfaces, and roadway density, increase the connectivity of distally located sediment that would-in undisturbed basins-deposit along the sediment cascade. This information is important to watershed managers as they mitigate erosion in developing basins.

Nitrogen/phosphorus behavior traits and implications during storm events in a semi-arid mountainous watershed

Seasonal rainfall events reinforce the link between terrestrial and fluvial domains and are crucial for assessing hydrological control over riverine nutrient dynamics and pollutant source behaviors, especially in a semi-arid watershed. Taking the Qingshuihe river basin, a semi-arid mountainous basin in China, as an example, this paper investigated storm effects on riverine nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) dynamics (i.e. concentration, load, and composition changes) through continuous sampling of four storm events of the 2019 rainy season, including one small storm, two moderate storms, and a large storm. Pollutant sources and transport pathways were then examined over the storm sequence via hysteresis analysis. The results revealed a strong linkage between N/P dynamics and hydrological processes. Storm runoff caused a 6-fold increase in particulate-P (PP) and a 4-fold increase in ammonia-N (NH₄-N) fluxes through four storms (most sensitive nutrients to storms). On average, PP shared 86% of P exports, and nitrate-N (NO₃-N) contributed 79% of N exports. PP and NH₄-N were delivered primarily from overland sources and transported by surface runoff. Nonetheless, mobilization of channel sediment reserves was also an important way of PP supply during storms. The results suggested groundwater as the principal NO₃-N source in the watershed, and subsurface flow was important for NO₃-N and total dissolved-P (TDP) delivery during storms. The large storm (>20 mm) often registered the highest N/P load exports. However, there were other influencing factors/processes on stormflow N/P dynamics in the semi-arid watershed, which complicate/override the effects of different storm magnitudes. Total suspended solids (TSS)/PP source availability and inter- and intra-storm export trends influenced P behaviors through storms. Moreover, impacts of mobilization processes on NO₃-N behavior appeared over the storm sequence. These findings enhance our understanding of storm events induced N/P exports in water-scarce regions and provide references for water quality predictions and control in flood seasons.

Charting a perfect storm of water quality pressures

The agri-food economy can be a significant driver of water quality pressures but the role of hydro-meteorological patterns in a changing climate also requires consideration. For this purpose, an assessment was made of a ten-year synchronous high temporal resolution water quality and hydro-meteorological dataset in Irish agricultural catchments. Changes occurring to rainfall intensity and soil temperature patterns were found to be important drivers of nutrient mobility in soils. There were links between the intensity of the North Atlantic Oscillation over the decade and large shifts in baseline nutrient concentrations in catchments. The data also revealed extreme weather impacts to pollution patterns including short periods of rain induced nutrient flux, that exceeded average annual mass loads in these catchments, and drought influences on point source pollution. These influences need consideration, and may require different mitigation strategies, as links between water quality land use pressure and water quality state in regulatory reviews. In a decade of both increased land use source and hydro-meteorological transport pressures, water quality natural capital in Ireland has faced a perfect storm. Such conditions are difficult to model and only revealed in high temporal resolution datasets.

Transport and fate of antibiotics in a typical aqua-agricultural catchment explained by rainfall events: Implications for catchment management

Antibiotics receive many concerns since their negative environmental impacts are being revealed, especially in aqua-agricultural areas. Rainfall events are responsible for transferring excess contaminants to receiving waters. However, the understanding of antibiotics transport and fate responding to rainfall events was constrained by limited event-based data and lacking integrated consideration of dissolved and particulate forms. We developed an intensive monitoring strategy to capture responses of fourteen antibiotics to different types of rainfall events and inter-event low flow periods. Pollutant-rich suspended particles, as high as 1471 ng/g, were found in low flow periods while the very heavy rainfall events and consecutive rainfall events stimulated the release of antibiotics from eroded soil particles to river water. Therefore, these rainfall events drove radical increase of dissolved antibiotic concentration up to 592 ng/L and total flux up to 25.0 g/d. Sulfonamides were particularly sensitive to rainfall events because of their residues in manure-applied agricultural lands. Transport dynamics of most antibiotics were accretion whereas only clarithromycin exhibited a dilution pattern by concentration-discharge relationships. Aquaculture ponds were inferred to significantly contribute tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and clarithromycin. Conventional contaminants were compared to discriminate potential sources of antibiotics and imply effective catchment management. The results provided novel insights into event-based drivers and dynamics of antibiotics and could lead to appropriate management strategy.

Event-scale hysteresis metrics to reveal processes and mechanisms controlling constituent export from watersheds: A review✰

Due to the increased availability of high-frequency measurements of stream chemistry provided by in situ sensors, researchers have gained more access to relationships between stream discharge and constituent concentrations (C-Q relationships) at event-scales. Existing studies reveal that event-scale C-Q relationships are mostly non-linear and exhibit temporal lags between peaks (or troughs) of hydrographs and chemographs, resulting in apparent hysteresis effects. In this paper, we summarize and introduce tools and methods in hysteresis analysis, especially the history and progresses of metrics to quantify hysteresis patterns. In addition, this paper provides a typical workflow to conduct event-scale hysteresis analysis, such as how to obtain the access to high-frequency measurements, existing methods to delineate storm events, approaches to classify and quantify hysteresis patterns, possible features/properties controlling hysteresis patterns, statistical methods to identify features at play, and strategies to deliver the inferences from hysteresis analysis. Lastly, we discuss some potential limitations that arise in the workflow and possible future work to address the challenges, including the development of advanced quantitative hysteresis metrics, generalized and standardized tools to delineate events and the integration of hysteresis analysis with numerical modeling. This paper aims to provide a critical overview of technical approaches for hysteresis analysis for researchers and hopefully foster their interests to advance our understanding of complex mechanisms in event-scale hydro-biogeochemical processes.

Integrating connectivity theory within watershed modelling part II: Application and evaluating structural and functional connectivity

Integrating connectivity theory within watershed modelling is one solution to overcome spatial and temporal shortcomings of sediment transport prediction, and Part I and II of these companion papers advance this overall goal. In Part II of these companion papers, we investigate sediment flux via connectivity formula discretized over many catchments and then integrated via sediment routing; and we advance model evaluation technology by using hysteresis of sensor data. Model evaluation with hysteresis indices provides nearly a 100% increase in model statistics. Hysteresis loop evaluation shows a shift from near linear behavior at low to moderate events and then clock-wise loops for larger events indicating the importance of proximal sediment sources. Catchment-scale sediment flux varies as function of the probability of timing and extent of connectivity of an individual catchment. Watershed-scale sediment flux shows self-similarity for the main stem of the river channel as the 181 catchments are integrated moving down gradient. Sediment flux varies from event-to-event as a function of the most sensitive connected pathways, including ephemeral gullies and roadside ditches in this basin. These sensitive pathways contribute disproportionately large amounts to overall sediment yield regardless of the total rainfall depth. Prediction requires the connectivity formula, erosion formula and sediment routing formula; and the probability of connectivity alone was a poor predictor for sediment transport. The result highlights the importance of coupling connectivity simulations with sediment transport formula, and our method provides one such approach.

Hysteresis analysis to quantify and qualify the sediment dynamics: state of the art

This work is a review of the use of hysteresis to quantify sediment discharge dynamics. We reviewed 71 journal articles from the year 1953 to the present day focusing on two topics: the factors that influence hysteresis; and hysteresis quantification. The main factors influencing hysteresis are: (a) magnitude and sequence of events; (b) sediment particle size distribution; (c) basin size; and (d) land use and sediment source. Hysteresis quantification can be done using several different methods that can be grouped as: (a) hysteresis indexes; (b) statistical analysis; and (c) uncertainty analysis. Most studies were conducted in Western Europe and the USA. The studies, in general, show how the factors listed above influence the shape and patterns of hysteresis. However, the sediment dynamics are complex, and the hysteresis patterns may be linked to many other factors, such as slope and drainage systems. The quantification of hysteresis still appears, mainly with the hysteresis index and statistical analysis. Therefore, there are still many other factors that influence hysteresis patterns, as well as hysteresis rates and uncertainty analyses.

Hydrologic Extremes and Legacy Sources Can Override Efforts to Mitigate Nutrient and Sediment Losses at the Catchment Scale

Combating eutrophication requires changes in land and water management in agricultural catchments and implementation of mitigation measures to reduce phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N) and suspended sediment (SS) losses. To date, such mitigation measures have been built in many agricultural catchments, but there is a lack of studies evaluating their effectiveness. Here we evaluated the effectiveness of mitigation measures in a clay soil-dominated headwater catchment by combining the evaluation of long-term and high-frequency data with punctual measurements upstream and downstream of three mitigation measures: lime-filter drains, a two-stage ditch, and a sedimentation pond. Long-term hydrochemical data at the catchment outlet showed a significant decrease in P (-15%) and SS (-28%) and an increase in nitrate nitrogen (NO-N, +13%) concentrations. High-frequency (hourly) measurements with a wet-chemistry analyzer (total and reactive P) and optical sensor (NO-N and SS) showed that the catchment is an abundant source of nutrients and sediments and that their transport is exacerbated by prolonged drought and resuspension of stream sediments during storm events. Lime-filter drains showed a decrease in SS by 76% and total P by 80% and an increase in NO-N by 45% compared with traditional drains, potentially indicating pollution swapping. The effectiveness of two-stage ditch and sedimentation pond was less evident and depended on the prevalent hydrometeorological conditions that drove the resuspension of bed sediments and associated sediment-bound P transport. These results suggest that increased frequency of prolonged drought due to changing weather patterns and resuspension of SS and sediment-bound P during storm events can override the generally positive effect of mitigation measures.

Sources and Mechanisms of Low-Flow River Phosphorus Elevations: A Repeated Synoptic Survey Approach

High-resolution water quality monitoring indicates recurring elevation of stream phosphorus concentrations during low-flow periods. These increased concentrations may exceed Water Framework Directive (WFD) environmental quality standards during ecologically sensitive periods. The objective of this research was to identify source, mobilization, and pathway factors controlling in-stream total reactive phosphorus (TRP) concentrations during low-flow periods. Synoptic surveys were conducted in three agricultural catchments during spring, summer, and autumn. Up to 50 water samples were obtained across each watercourse per sampling round. Samples were analysed for TRP and total phosphorus (TP), along with supplementary parameters (temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and oxidation reduction potential). Bed sediment was analysed at a subset of locations for Mehlich P, Al, Ca, and Fe. The greatest percentages of water sampling points exceeding WFD threshold of 0.035 mg L−1 TRP occurred during summer (57%, 11%, and 71% for well-drained, well-drained arable, and poorly drained grassland catchments, respectively). These percentages declined during autumn but did not return to spring concentrations, as winter flushing had not yet occurred. Different controls were elucidated for each catchment: diffuse transport through groundwater and lack of dilution in the well-drained grassland, in-stream mobilization in the well-drained arable, and a combination of point sources and cumulative loading in the poorly drained grassland. Diversity in controlling factors necessitates investigative protocols beyond low-spatial and temporal resolution water sampling and must incorporate both repeated survey and complementary understanding of sediment chemistry and anthropogenic phosphorus sources. Despite similarities in elevation of P at low-flow, catchments will require custom solutions depending on their typology, and both legislative deadlines and target baselines standards must acknowledge these inherent differences.

Land cover impacts on storm flow suspended solid and nutrient concentrations in southwest Ohio streams

Impacts between urban and agricultural land cover on storm flow water quality are poorly understood for the Eastern Corn Belt Ecoregion in SW Ohio. Storm flow water samples were collected from May 2017 to October 2017 across seven SW Ohio watersheds which ranged in urban land cover from 6% to 92% and in agricultural land cover from 4% to 70%. Two watersheds contained water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Percent agricultural land cover in a watershed and storm magnitude were primary explanatory variables for total suspended solid and total phosphorus concentrations. Total nitrogen, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations were primarily explained by the presence of WRRFs and percent agricultural land cover. Increased dissolved nutrient concentrations in watersheds with WRRFs indicate that WRRFs in the study area are ineffectively removing nitrate and phosphate from effluent. Results suggest that to improve water quality during storm flows, additional management efforts need to be focused on agricultural watersheds and WRRFs. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Storm flow water quality in the study area is significantly affected by land cover, WRRF Q, and storm Q. TSS and TP concentrations are best explained by percent of agricultural land cover in a watershed and magnitude of storms. TN, NO₃ -N, and PO 4 3 -P concentrations are best explained by WRRF Q, followed by the percent agricultural land cover. This study shows that agricultural land cover and WRRFs play a significant role in water quality degradation in SW Ohio.

Landscaping compromises for land degradation neutrality: The case of soil erosion in a Mediterranean agricultural landscape

Soil erosion is the primary process driving land degradation. Using multiple scales of management to minimize soil erosion is crucial to achieve land degradation neutrality targets within the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. Land management (LM) influences both on-site and off-site erosion on the event-scale and over the long-term. However, each LM differs in effectiveness depending on the temporal scale considered. In order to understand how LM effects internal and external catchment dynamics, we apply LandSoil, a physically based landscape evolution model, to evaluate 7 LM scenarios over long- (30 years) and short-terms (event scale). LM scenarios included changes in land use and/or landscape structure. Under current LM, mean surface soil erosion was ∼0.69 ± 39·10^-3 m over 30 years. In contrast, a single extreme event (435 mm/24 h) in January resulted in ∼0.62 ± 3·10^-3 m loss and ∼0.04 ± 2·10^-3 m if it occurred in October. Heterogeneous patterns of erosion and deposition developed after 30 years, whereas extreme events dominantly showed soil loss and high catchment connectivity. Effectiveness of LM in erosion mitigation and sediment trapping differed according to temporal and spatial scales for each scenario. We concluded that multiple temporal and spatial scales must be incorporated in order to adaptively manage land degradation and meet neutrality targets.

The way forward: Can connectivity be useful to design better measuring and modelling schemes for water and sediment dynamics?

For many years, scientists have tried to understand, describe and quantify water and sediment fluxes, with associated substances like pollutants, at multiple scales. In the past two decades, a new concept called connectivity has been used by Earth Scientists as a means to describe and quantify the influences on the fluxes of water and sediment on different scales: aggregate, pedon, location on the slope, slope, watershed, and basin. A better understanding of connectivity can enhance our comprehension of landscape processes and provide a basis for the development of better measurement and modelling approaches, further leading to a better potential for implementing this concept as a management tool. This paper provides a short review of the State-of-the-Art of the connectivity concept, from which we conclude that scientists have been struggling to find a way to quantify connectivity so far. We adapt the knowledge of connectivity to better understand and quantify water and sediment transfers in catchment systems. First, we introduce a new approach to the concept of connectivity to study water and sediment transfers and the associated substances. In this approach water and sediment dynamics are divided in two parts: the system consists of phases and fluxes, each being separately measurable. This approach enables us to: i) better conceptualize our understanding of system dynamics at different timescales, including long timescales; ii) identify the main parameters driving system dynamics, and devise monitoring strategies which capture them; and, iii) build models with a holistic approach to simulate system dynamics without excessive complexity. Secondly, we discuss the role of system boundaries in designing measurement schemes and models. Natural systems have boundaries within which sediment connectivity varies between phases; in (semi-)arid regions these boundaries can be far apart in time due to extreme events. External disturbances (eg. climate change, changed land management) can change these boundaries. It is therefore important to consider the system state as a whole, including its boundaries and internal dynamics, when designing and implementing comprehensive monitoring and modelling approaches. Connectivity is a useful tool concept for scientists that must be expanded to stakeholder and policymakers.

Comparing winter-time herbicide behavior and exports in urban, rural, and mixed-use watersheds

The presence of pesticides in streams in winter, five to six years following bans on their municipal use suggests that complicated transport behaviour, such as subsurface retention and/or accumulation of pesticides and its release during storms, could be important for understanding recovery time frames following bans or legislation that aim to reduce chemical inputs. We investigated late fall and winter dynamics of four herbicides in paired urban and rural watersheds in Toronto, Canada during rainfall and snowmelt. The range of average concentrations and loads of the sum of atrazine, metolachlor, 2,4-D and mecoprop overlapped in the two types of watersheds, with slightly higher average concentrations in the rural watershed. Relatively consistent herbicide concentration-discharge patterns (i.e. dilution) were observed in the urban sub-watersheds during rainfall, while concentration-discharge patterns were much more variable in the rural watershed. This suggests relatively uniform transport pathways across the urban sub-watersheds, compared to the rural watershed. Concentration-discharge patterns of the neutral herbicides atrazine and metolachlor were similar in both watersheds during snowmelt, though varying discharge patterns resulted in divergent timings of peak concentrations. In contrast, the acidic pesticides 2,4-D and mecoprop, which are primarily associated with urban uses, showed much more variable behavior across both watersheds and merit further investigation. Overall, this work highlights the need to consider pesticide dynamics throughout the year in order to more thoroughly assess the long-term efficacy of legislation governing their use.

Synthesis of nutrient and sediment export patterns in the Chesapeake Bay watershed: Complex and non-stationary concentration-discharge relationships

Derived from river monitoring data, concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationships are useful indicators of riverine export dynamics. A top-down synthesis of C-Q patterns was conducted for suspended sediment (SS), total phosphorus (TP), and total nitrogen (TN) for nine major tributaries (15 monitoring sites) to Chesapeake Bay, which represent diverse characteristics in terms of land use, physiography, and hydrological settings. Model coefficients from the recently-developed Weighted Regressions on Time, Discharge, and Season (WRTDS) method were used to make informative interpretation of C-Q relationships. Unlike many previous C-Q studies that focused on stormflow conditions, this approach allows simultaneous examination of various discharge conditions within an uncertainty framework. This synthesis on WRTDS coefficients (i.e., the sensitivity of concentration to discharge) has offered new insights on the complexity of watershed function. Results show that watershed export has been dominated by mobilization patterns for SS and TP (particulate-dominated species) and chemostasis patterns for TN (dissolved-dominated species) under many river discharge conditions. Among nine possible modalities of low-flow vs. high-flow patterns, the three most frequent modalities are mobilization vs. mobilization (17 cases), chemostasis vs. mobilization (13 cases), and chemostasis vs. chemostasis (7 cases), representing 82% of all 45 watershed-constituent pairs. The general lack of dilution patterns may suggest that none of these constituents has been supply-limited in these watersheds. For many watershed-constituent combinations, results show clear temporal non-stationarity in C-Q relationships under selected time-invariant discharges, reflecting major changes in dominant watershed sources due to anthropogenic actions. These results highlight the potential pitfalls of assuming fixed C-Q relationships in the record. Overall, this work demonstrates the utility of WRTDS model coefficients for interpretation of river water-quality data and for generation of sensible hypotheses on dominant processes in different watersheds. The approach is readily adaptable to other river systems, where long-term discretely-sampled data are available, to decipher complex interactions between hydrological and biogeochemical processes.

Investigating the Sources and Transport of Benzotriazole UV Stabilizers during Rainfall and Snowmelt across an Urbanization Gradient

Benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BT-UVs) have attracted increasing attention due to their bioaccumulative nature and ubiquitous presence in surface waters. We apply high-frequency sampling in paired watersheds to describe, for the first time, the behavior of BT-UVs in stream channels during snowmelt and rainfall. Relative to a largely agricultural watershed, concentrations of BT-UVs in an urban watershed were 4-90 times greater during rainfall and 3-21 times greater during snowmelt. During rainfall, a decrease in BT-UV concentrations on particles with increasing suspended sediments and streamflow occurred at all urban sites due to input of relatively clean sediments, while both decreases and increases were observed at rural sites. Where increases occurred in the rural watershed, road sediments were consistently suggested as the source. Contrasts between the urban and rural sites were also observed during snowmelt. While BT-UV concentrations on particles peaked with peak suspended sediment levels at urban stream sites, the opposite was true at rural stream sites. This appeared to be driven partially by different snowpack melt rates in the two watersheds, with earlier melt and presumably higher streamflow facilitating suspension or erosion of more contaminated sediment in the urban stream. In general, it appears that relatively high, consistent emissions in the form of informal (plastic) debris disposal by consumers or industrial releases have likely led to more homogeneous BT-UV profiles and temporal behavior in the urban watershed. In the rural watershed, low emissions instead entail that emissions variability is more likely to translate to variability in chemical profiles and temporal behavior.

Assessing uncertainty in annual nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended sediment load estimates in three agricultural streams using a 21-year dataset

Accurate estimation of constituent loads is important for studies of ecosystem mass balance or total maximum daily loads. In response, there has been an effort to develop methods to increase both accuracy and precision of constituent load estimates. The relationship between constituent concentration and stream discharge is often complicated, potentially leading to high uncertainty in load estimates for certain constituents, especially at longer-term (annual) scales. We used the loadflex R package to compare uncertainty in annual load estimates from concentration vs. discharge relationships in constituents of interest in agricultural systems, including ammonium as nitrogen (NH₄-N), nitrate as nitrogen (NO₃-N), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and suspended sediments (SS). We predicted that uncertainty would be greatest in NO₃-N and SS due to complex relationships between constituent concentration and discharge. We also predicted lower uncertainty with a composite method compared to regression or interpolation methods. Contrary to predictions, we observed the lowest uncertainty in annual NO₃-N load estimates (relative error 1.5-23%); however, uncertainty was greatest in SS load estimates, consistent with predictions (relative error 19-96%). For all constituents, we also generally observed reductions in uncertainty by up to 34% using the composite method compared to regression and interpolation approaches, as predicted. These results highlight differences in uncertainty among different constituents and will aid in model selection for future studies requiring accurate and precise estimates of constituent load.

Integrated climate-chemical indicators of diffuse pollution from land to water

Management of agricultural diffuse pollution to water remains a challenge and is influenced by the complex interactions of rainfall-runoff pathways, soil and nutrient management, agricultural landscape heterogeneity and biogeochemical cycling in receiving water bodies. Amplified cycles of weather can also influence nutrient loss to water although they are less considered in policy reviews. Here, we present the development of climate-chemical indicators of diffuse pollution in highly monitored catchments in Western Europe. Specifically, we investigated the influences and relationships between weather processes amplified by the North Atlantic Oscillation during a sharp upward trend (2010–2016) and the patterns of diffuse nitrate and phosphorus pollution in rivers. On an annual scale, we found correlations between local catchment-scale nutrient concentrations in rivers and the influence of larger, oceanic-scale climate patterns defined by the intensity of the North Atlantic Oscillation. These influences were catchment-specific showing positive, negative or no correlation according to a typology. Upward trends in these decadal oscillations may override positive benefits of local management in some years or indicate greater benefits in other years. Developing integrated climate-chemical indicators into catchment monitoring indicators will provide a new and important contribution to water quality management objectives.

A review of source tracking techniques for fine sediment within a catchment

Excessive transport of fine sediment, and its associated pollutants, can cause detrimental impacts in aquatic environments. It is therefore important to perform accurate sediment source apportionment to identify hot spots of soil erosion. Various tracers have been adopted, often in combination, to identify sediment source type and its spatial origin; these include fallout radionuclides, geochemical tracers, mineral magnetic properties and bulk and compound-specific stable isotopes. In this review, the applicability of these techniques to particular settings and their advantages and limitations are reviewed. By synthesizing existing approaches, that make use of multiple tracers in combination with measured changes of channel geomorphological attributes, an integrated analysis of tracer profiles in deposited sediments in lakes and reservoirs can be made. Through a multi-scale approach for fine sediment tracking, temporal changes in soil erosion and sediment load can be reconstructed and the consequences of changing catchment practices evaluated. We recommend that long-term, as well as short-term, monitoring of riverine fine sediment and corresponding surface and subsurface sources at nested sites within a catchment are essential. Such monitoring will inform the development and validation of models for predicting dynamics of fine sediment transport as a function of hydro-climatic and geomorphological controls. We highlight that the need for monitoring is particularly important for hilly catchments with complex and changing land use. We recommend that research should be prioritized for sloping farmland-dominated catchments.

The transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during rainfall and snowmelt in contrasting landscapes

Though it has been established that stream concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban watersheds can be much greater than those in less developed watersheds, knowledge of transport mechanisms is lacking, particularly in temperate, Northern climates with seasonal snow packs. We combine high-resolution stream water sampling with air, suspended solid and stream flow monitoring to investigate the source to stream transport of PAHs during rainfall and snowmelt in paired watersheds with contrasting land use. Despite similar particle loads, contamination of particles that is 8-48 times higher in the urban watersheds leads to area-normalized loads of PAHs that are 6-82 times greater than in the agricultural watersheds. In the urban watershed, average volumetric storm flow concentrations increase with longer antecedent dry period that allows build-up of PAHs on watershed surfaces. Cluster analysis suggests road dust is a minor source of suspended solid-bound PAHs in more agricultural watersheds during rainfall. During snowmelt, earlier peaks in concentration in the urban watershed are likely due to melt from snow packs and snow banks travelling quickly to the stream network via impervious surfaces and sewer drains. While road-derived inputs also appear to be important during snowmelt in the agricultural watershed, relatively delayed peak concentrations result from delayed inputs from snow packs in more pervious areas of the watershed.

Influence of stormflow and baseflow phosphorus pressures on stream ecology in agricultural catchments

Stormflow and baseflow phosphorus (P) concentrations and loads in rivers may exert different ecological pressures during different seasons. These pressures and subsequent impacts are important to disentangle in order to target and monitor the effectiveness of mitigation measures. This study investigated the influence of stormflow and baseflow P pressures on stream ecology in six contrasting agricultural catchments. A five-year high resolution dataset was used consisting of stream discharge, P chemistry, macroinvertebrate and diatom ecology, supported with microbial source tracking and turbidity data. Total reactive P (TRP) loads delivered during baseflows were low (1-7% of annual loads), but TRP concentrations frequently exceeded the environmental quality standard (EQS) of 0.035mgL^-1 during these flows (32-100% of the time in five catchments). A pilot microbial source tracking exercise in one catchment indicated that both human and ruminant faecal effluents were contributing to these baseflow P pressures but were diluted at higher flows. Seasonally, TRP concentrations tended to be highest during summer due to these baseflow P pressures and corresponded well with declines in diatom quality during this time (R²=0.79). Diatoms tended to recover by late spring when storm P pressures were most prevalent and there was a poor relationship between antecedent TRP concentrations and diatom quality in spring (R²=0.23). Seasonal variations were less apparent in the macroinvertebrate indices; however, there was a good relationship between antecedent TRP concentrations and macroinvertebrate quality during spring (R²=0.51) and summer (R²=0.52). Reducing summer point source discharges may be the quickest way to improve ecological river quality, particularly diatom quality in these and similar catchments. Aligning estimates of P sources with ecological impacts and identifying ecological signals which can be attributed to storm P pressures are important next steps for successful management of agricultural catchments at these scales.

Investigating the temporal dynamics of suspended sediment during flood events with 7Be and 210Pbxs measurements in a drained lowland catchment

Soil erosion is recognized as one of the main processes of land degradation in agricultural areas. High suspended sediment loads, often generated from eroding agricultural landscapes, are known to degrade downstream environments. Accordingly, there is a need to understand soil erosion dynamics during flood events. Suspended sediment was therefore sampled in the river network and at tile drain outlets during five flood events in a lowland drained catchment in France. Source and sediment fallout radionuclide concentrations (⁷Be, ²¹⁰Pb_xs) were measured to quantify both the fraction of recently eroded particles transported during flood events and their residence time. Results indicate that the mean fraction of recently eroded sediment, estimated for the entire Louroux catchment, increased from 45 ± 20% to 80 ± 20% between December 2013 and February 2014, and from 65 ± 20% to 80 ± 20% in January 2016. These results demonstrate an initial flush of sediment previously accumulated in the river channel before the increasing supply of sediment recently eroded from the hillslopes during subsequent events. This research highlights the utility of coupling continuous river monitoring and fallout radionuclide measurements to increase our understanding of sediment dynamics and improve the management of soil and water resources in agricultural catchments.
