Transfer Mechanism, Uptake Kinetic Process, and Bioavailability of P, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn in Macrophyte Rhizosphere Using Diffusive Gradients in Thin Films

Root-mediated acidification, phosphatase activity and the phosphorus-cycling microbial community enhance phosphorus mobilization in the rhizosphere of wetland plants

Rhizoremediation of wetland plants is an environmentally friendly strategy for sediment phosphorous (P) removal, the basic underlying principle of which is the complex interactions between roots and microorganisms. This study investigated the immobilization and mobilization mechanisms of P in the rhizosphere of wetland plants using high-resolution spatial visualization techniques and metagenomic sequencing. Two-dimensional visualization of the spatial distribution of P, iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) indicated that the sequestration of Fe-oxides rather than Mn-oxides caused the depletion of labile P, resulting in an increase in the Fe-adsorbed P fraction. Plants altered the rhizospheric environments and P-cycling microbial community to mobilize low-availability P from sediments. Mineral P solubilization and organic P mineralization were enhanced by local acidification and increased phosphatase activity, respectively. Microbial P mobilization also increased with increasing relative abundances of P solubilization and mineralization genes (gcd and phnW) and decreasing P transportation genes (ugpA, ugpB, and pit) genes in the rhizosphere. These processes led to the remobilization of 10.04 % of inorganic P, and 15.23 % of organic P, in the rhizosphere during the incubation period. However, the resupply of P via the above processes did not compensate for the depletion of rhizospheric P via root uptake and mineral sequestration. Our results provide novel insights into the mechanisms of rhizospheric P cycling, which will help to inform future phytoremediation strategies.

Seasonal variations in spatial distribution, mobilization kinetic and toxicity risk of arsenic in sediments of Lake Taihu, China

This study investigated seasonal variations in spatial distribution, mobilization kinetic and toxicity risk of arsenic (As) in sediments of three representative ecological lakes in Lake Taihu. Results suggested that the bioavailability and mobility of As in sediments depended on the lake ecological types and seasonal changes. At the algal-type zones and macrophyte-type zones, elevated As concentrations were observed in April and July, while these occurred at the transition areas in July and October. The diffusion flux of soluble As ranged from 0.03 to 3.03 ng/cm2/d, indicating sediments acted as a source of As. Reductive dissolution of As-bearing iron/manganese-oxides was the key driver of sediment As remobilization. However, labile S(-II) caused by the degradations of algae and macrophytes buffered sediment As release at the algal-type and macrophyte-type zones. Furthermore, the resupply ratio was less than 1 at three ecological lakes, indicating the resupply As capacity of sediment solid phase was partially sustained case. The risk quotient values were higher than 1 at the algal-type zones and transition areas in July, thereby, the adverse effects of As should not be ignored. This suggested that it is urgently need to be specifically monitored and managed for As contamination in sediments across multi-ecological lakes.

Principles, applications, and limitations of diffusive gradients in thin films induced fluxed in soils and sediments

The diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique serves as a passive sampling method, inducing analyte transport and concentration. Its application is widespread in assessing labile components of metals, organic matter, and nutrients across various environmental media such as water, sediments, and saturated soils. The DGT devices effectively reduce the porewater concentration through irreversible binding of solutes, consequently promoting the release of labile species from the soil/sediment solid phase. However, the precise quantification of simultaneous adsorption and desorption of labile species using DGT devices alone remains a challenge. To address this challenge, the DGT-Induced Fluxes in Soils and Sediments (DIFS) model was developed. This model simulates analyte kinetics in solid phases, solutions, and binding resins by incorporating factors such as soil properties, resupply parameters, and kinetic principles. While the DIFS model has been iteratively improved to increase its accuracy in portraying kinetic behavior in soil/sediment, researchers' incomplete comprehension of it still results in unrealistic fitting outcomes and an oversight of the profound implications posed by kinetic parameters during implementation. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the optimization and utilization of DIFS models, encompassing fundamental concepts behind DGT devices and DIFS models, the kinetic interpretation of DIFS parameters, and instances where the model has been applied to study soils and sediments. It also highlights preexisting limitations of the DIFS model and offers suggestions for more precise modeling in real-world environments.

Phosphorus mobilization in sulfidic sediments in the Baltic Sea

It is well-known that the geochemical behavior of phosphorus (P) in sediments is closely related to that of Fe and Mn, but their relations remain unclear in long-term sulfidic sediments such as those of the Gotland Basin in the Baltic Sea. Therefore, P mobilization in these sediments at both shallow and deep sites was investigated in relation to that of Fe, Mn, and S. To achieve that aim, classic sediment slicing and subsequent solid phase sequential extraction were combined with in situ DGT (Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films) sampling, DIFS (DGT induced flux in sediments) modelling, and Visual MINTEQ calculations. Correlations between total dissolved and labile dissolved concentrations of P, Mn, and Fe in porewater, and the associations between labile fractions of these elements in the solid phase suggested two kinds of sources for P: The dissolution of P-bearing Fe oxides and/or Mn carbonates was observed in the shallower sites, while P and Mn release from different solid sources was observed in the deepest sites. Although the formation of Fe sulfides leads to extremely low dissolved Fe level in porewater, the simultaneous release of P with Mn/Fe was confirmed by theoretical calculations with Visual MINTEQ. The DIFS model showed that the resupply ability of P from sediment solids is determined by labile pool size. The application of experimental and theoretical methods made it possible to clarify the relationships between P, Fe, Mn and S in sulfidic sediments which may contribute to a better understanding of the P cycle in other sulfidic regions.

Cleaning technologies integrated in duct flows for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in indoor environments: A critical review of recent innovations and future challenges

Pathogenic microorganisms are a major concern in indoor environments, particularly in sensitive facilities such as hospitals, due to their potential to cause nosocomial infections. This study evaluates the concentration of airborne bacteria and fungi in the University Hospital Complex of Albacete (Spain), comparing the results with recent literature. Staphylococcus is identified as the most prevalent bacterial genus with a percentage distribution of 35%, while Aspergillus represents the dominant fungal genus at 34%. The lack of high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 6, TRL 7) for effective indoor air purification requires research efforts to bridge this knowledge gap. A screening of disinfection technologies for pathogenic airborne microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi is conducted. The integration of filtration, irradiation or and (electro)chemical gas treatment systems in duct flows is discussed to enhance the design of the air-conditioning systems for indoor air purification. Concerns over microbial growth have led to recent studies on coating commercial fibrous air filters with antimicrobial particles (silver nanoparticles, iron oxide nanowires) and polymeric materials (polyaniline, polyvinylidene fluoride). Promising alternatives to traditional short-wave UV-C energy for disinfection include LED and Far-UVC irradiation systems. Additionally, research explores the use of TiO2 and TiO2 doped with metals (Ag, Cu, Pt) in filters with photocatalytic properties, enabling the utilization of visible or solar light. Hybrid photocatalysis, combining TiO2 with polymers, carbon nanomaterials, or MXene nanomaterials, enhances the photocatalytic process. Chemical treatment systems such as aerosolization of biocidal agents (benzalkonium chloride, hydrogen peroxide, chlorine dioxide or ozone) with their possible combination with other technologies such as adsorption, filtration or photocatalysis, are also tested for gas disinfection. However, the limited number of studies on the use of electrochemical technology poses a challenge for further investigation into gas-phase oxidant generation, without the formation of harmful by-products, to raise its TRL for effectively inactivating airborne microorganisms in indoor environments.

Simultaneous measurement of labile As (III) and As (V) in soils combining DGT and HPLC-ICP-MS

The speciation of arsenic (As) determines its biogeochemistry and ecotoxicity in soils. However, the approach to in situ monitor labile As (III) and As (V) in soils still requires more exploration. In this study, we developed a method for simultaneously obtaining in-situ data on labile As (III) and As (V) in soils using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and high performance liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The Fe₂O₃∙xH₂O DGT sampler exhibited rapid and simultaneous accumulation of As (III) and As (V) in solutions within 90 min. The high efficiency of simultaneous elution of As (III) (~84 %) and As (V) (~97 %) was achieved using 0.8 % H₃PO₄ as eluent at 90 °C for 80 min. The method detection limits for As (III) and As (V) were 0.01 and 0.005 μg/L, respectively. This method was applied to reveal the labile As (III) and As (V) in soils in the water level fluctuation zones of the Three Gorges Reservoir, which is the largest reservoir in China. The concentrations of As (III) and As (V) measured by DGT varied with different sampling sites, ranging from 0.01 μg/L to 1.20 μg/L and from 0.01 μg/L to 0.26 μg/L, respectively. The labile As (III) exhibited the higher resupply rate from soil solid phase to soil solution than labile As (V). This study helps to achieve simultaneous in-situ quantification of labile As (III) and As (V) in soils, and will improve the understanding of As mobilization and ecotoxicity in soils.

Predictive and estimation model of Cd, Ni, and Zn bioaccumulations in maize based on diffusive gradients in thin films

Consumption of maize contaminated with heavy metals such as cadmium, nickel, and zinc threaten human health. For situ measuring the bioavailability of heavy metals, the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) is superior to other traditional methods. It is also important to find a method for predicting heavy metal enrichment in maize based on the DGT method. In this study, field surveys were conducted in the main maize producing areas of Tianjin, China. Heavy metal concentrations in maize grains were predicted by coupling DGT with traditional extraction methods. The results show that coupling DGT with soil solution can significantly improve prediction accuracy (Cd-R² = 0.908, Ni-R² = 0.903, and Zn-R² = 0.904). This indicated that DGT and soil solution were feasible predictors of heavy metal concentration in maize. The DGT induced fluxes in soil/sediment (DIFS) model was used to simulate the uptake process of heavy metals by DGT, and better reveal the desorption processes of heavy metals in soils. DIFS-based desorption processes were employed to characterize the resupply ability of heavy metals in soils. The coupling of DGT and DIFS parameters provided the best prediction accuracy in this study (Cd-R² = 0.920, Ni-R² = 0.928, and Zn-R² = 0.908). Predictions are slightly weaker for Zn than for Cd and Ni (Cd-P < 0.01, Ni-P < 0.01, and Zn-P < 0.05). The reason is that the average resupply type of Cd and Ni in soil is partially sustained while Zn is resupplied via diffusion only. The desorption rate k_-1 can excellently improve the prediction accuracy of DGT, which avoids the disadvantage that soil solution does not consider desorption. The coupling of DGT and DIFS parameters provides an accurate and reliable method for predicting heavy metal enrichment in maize.

Nano and fine colloids suspended in the soil solution regulate phosphorus desorption and lability in organic fertiliser-amended soils

Mobile colloids impact phosphorus (P) binding and transport in agroecosystems. However, their relationship to P-lability and their relative importance to P-bioavailability is unclear. In soils amended with organic fertilisers, we investigated the effects of nano (NC; 1-20 nm), fine (FC; 20-220 nm), and medium (MC; 220-450 nm) colloids suspended in soil solution on soil P-desorption and lability. The underlying hypothesis is that mobile colloids of different sizes, i.e., NC, FC, and MC, may contribute differently to P-lability in soils enriched with organic fertiliser. NC- and FC-bound P_coll were positively correlated with P-lability parameters from diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT_A-labile P concentration, r ≥ 0.88; and DGT_A-effective P concentration, r ≥ 0.87). The corresponding relations with MC-bound P_coll are weaker (r values of 0.50 and 0.51). NC- and FC-bound P_coll were also strongly correlated with soil P-resupply (r ≥ 0.64) and desorption (r ≥ 0.79) parameters during DGT_A deployment, and the mobility of these colloids was corroborated by electron microscopy of DGT_A gels. MC-bound P_coll was negatively correlated with the solid-to-solution distribution coefficient (r = -0.42), indicating this fraction is unlikely to be the source of P-release from the solid phase after P-depletion from the soil solution. We conclude that NC and FC mainly contribute to regulating soil desorbable-P supply to the soil solution in the DGT_A depletion zone (in vitro proxy for plant rhizosphere), and consequently may act as critical conditioners of P-bioavailability, whereas MC tends to form complexes that lead to P-occlusion rather than lability.

New insight for the diffusion-resupply kinetics of Cr(VI) in contaminated soil using DGT/DIFS

Chromium (Cr) is a widespread pollutant with high toxicity and mobility. However, the diffusion-resupply kinetics of Cr(VI) between the solid phase and solution in the soils remain unclear. Here, we quantified the contributions of the soil solution and solid phase to the diffusion-resupply process of Cr(VI) in the contaminated soils using the diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) and DGT-induced fluxes in soils model. Based on the solution extraction result, Cr(VI) was the main available Cr species in the contaminated soils. Comparing the two diffusion-resupply stages of the kinetic process, the potential hazards due to the resupply from the solid phase can reach 10.71-50.66 %, although the soil solution accounted for the largest proportion of the effective concentration of Cr(VI) (49.34-89.29 %), which was ignored in the traditional equilibrium method. The kinetic parameters can be used to interpret the dynamic process. The resupply ability of the solid phase was closely related to the response time (T_c). The longer T_c was consistent with the low desorption constant, indicating a kinetic limitation. The magnitude of the resupply from the solid phase was related to labile pool size of Cr(VI) and soil organic carbon content. This study established a new quantification method for assessing diffusion-resupply kinetics of Cr(VI) in the soil， indicating the underestimation of Cr(VI) risk based on the use of traditional equilibrium methods. Our data provided a scientific basis for ecological risk assessment, pollution prevention, surface- and groundwater control, and environmental governance in areas with Cr contaminated soil.

Dissolution kinetics and solubility of copper oxide nanoparticles as affected by soil properties and aging time

Nano copper oxide (CuO NP) was added to eight soils to study the effect of aging time of copper on the concentration of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-extracted copper (DTPA-Cu), with bulk copper oxide (CuO BP) and copper nitrate [Cu(NO₃)₂] used for comparison. Moreover, the effect of soil properties on the dissolution of CuO NP was studied. A dissolution model was used to quantitatively describe the dissolution kinetics of CuO NPs in different soils. The results showed that the concentration of DTPA-Cu decreased with increasing aging time in soils spiked with Cu(NO₃)₂, while the concentration increased to varying degrees in soils spiked with CuO NPs or CuO BPs. In acidic soils, the equilibrium concentrations of DTPA-Cu were 93.3-98.7 mg·kg^-1 for CuO NP treatments, 65.5-94.3 mg·kg^-1 for CuO BP treatments, and 81.4-90.0 mg·kg^-1 for Cu(NO₃)₂ treatments, which were greater than those in alkaline soils (43.4-56.9 mg·kg^-1, 6.26-8.61 mg·kg^-1, and 73.9-80.0 mg·kg^-1, respectively). In acidic soils, DTPA-Cu equilibrium concentration ranked the different forms of copper treatments as CuO NPs > Cu(NO₃)₂ > CuO BPs, while in alkaline soils, the order was Cu(NO₃)₂ > CuO NPs > CuO BPs. The dissolution rate constants and solubility of CuO NPs were 0.33-6.42 and 37.1-100.1 mg·kg^-1, respectively. Pearson correlation analysis indicated that the dissolution parameters of CuO NPs were negatively correlated with soil pH and positively correlated with the contents of organic matter, clay, iron oxides, and aluminum oxides. Further, the dissolution rate constant and solubility of CuO NPs could be well predicted by soil pH and the content of free or amorphous aluminum. Our study identified the main factors controlling the dissolution of CuO NPs in farmland soils and highlighted the higher availability of CuO NPs in acidic soils.

Use of Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) to Reveal Spatially Varying Relationships between Cd Accumulation and Soil Properties at Field Scale

The spatial variation of correlation between Cd accumulation and its impact factors plays an important role in precise management of Cd contaminated farmland. Samples of topsoils (n = 247) were collected from suburban farmland located at the junction of the Yellow River Basin and the Huaihe River Basin in China using a 200 m × 200 m grid system. The total and available contents of Cd (T-Cd and A-Cd) in topsoils were analyzed by ICP-MS, and their spatial distribution was analyzed using kriging interpolation with the GIS technique. Geographically weighted regression (GWR) models were applied to explore the spatial variation and their influencing mechanisms of relationships between major environmental factors (pH, organic matter, available phosphorus (A-P)) and Cd accumulation. Spatial distribution showed that T-Cd, A-Cd and their influencing factors had obvious spatial variability, and high value areas primarily cluster near industrial agglomeration areas and irrigation canals. GWR analysis revealed that relationships between T-Cd, A-Cd and their environmental factors presented obvious spatial heterogeneity. Notably, there was a significant negative correlation between soil pH and T-Cd, A-Cd, but with the increase of pH in soil the correlation decreased. A novel finding of a positive correlation between OM and T-Cd, A-Cd was observed, but significant positive correlation only occurred in the high anthropogenic input area due to the complex effects of organic matter on Cd activity. The influence intensity of pH and OM on T-Cd and A-Cd increases under the strong influence of anthropogenic sources. Additionally, T-Cd and A-Cd were totally positively related to soil A-P, but mostly not significantly, which was attributed to the complexity of the available phosphorus source and the differences in Cd contents in chemical fertilizer. Furthermore, clay content might be an important factor affecting the correlation between Cd and soil properties, considering that the correlation between Cd and pH, SOM, A-P was significantly lower in areas with lower clay particles. This study suggested that GWR was an effective tool to reveal spatially varying relationships at field scale, which provided a new idea to further explore the related influencing factors on spatial distribution of contaminants and to realize precise management of a farmland environment.

Simultaneous evaluation of kinetic release of labile arsenic and phosphorus in agricultural soils using cerium oxide-based DGT

The adsorption/desorption of arsenic (As) in agricultural soils is of utmost importance for the evaluation of its kinetic release and potential of entering the food chain by uptake of crops. However, the mobility of As in soils is closely related to the migration behavior of soil phosphorus (P) due to their chemical similarity. Here, the distribution and desorption kinetics of As and P in four different types of farmland soils were simultaneously estimated by cerium oxide-based diffusive gradients in thin films technique (CeO₂-DGT) coupled with dynamic model of DGT induced fluxes in soils (DIFS). CeO₂-DGT was deployed in the soils over 400 h to investigate the interactions between As and P for their migration behaviors. The accumulated masses of As in the DGT devices showed reverse orders with those of P among the four soils, indicating their competitive adsorption on soil solids. The distribution coefficients (K_dl) for the labile As and P derived from the DIFS model were mutually exclusive. Clay in the soil reduced the pool size of the labile As by increasing the irreversible adsorption of As on soil particles. The adsorption rate constants of As were much smaller than P but their desorption rate constants were comparable. Among the four soils, the soil with the highest soil labile As/P molar ratio measured by DGT showed the largest potential of As phytotoxicity. Both As and P could reach the equilibrium of resupply within 0.7- 18 min under DGT depletion, and significant negative correlation was observed between the desorption rate (k_b) of As and clay content in the soils.

A three-dimensional (3D) printing approach to fabricate an isolation chip for high throughput in situ cultivation of environmental microbes

The full plethora of environmental bacteria is often poorly represented in vitro as the majority remain difficult, if not impossible, to culture under standard laboratory settings. These bacteria often require native conditions for the formation of cell masses that collectively have higher chances of survival. With that, a 3D-printed version of the isolation chip (iChip) was used to cultivate bacteria from a tropical peat swamp in situ prior to growth and maintenance in vitro. Briefly, plates made from either acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polylactic acid (PLA), or epoxy resin were tested in terms of their usability and durability under acidic conditions similar to those of peat matter. The epoxy resin plates were then found to be most optimal for the sampling conditions. Peat soil samples were collected from the base of a Koompassia malaccensis tree and reconstituted in molten 10% (wt/vol) tryptone soy agar (TSA) prior to inoculation. The iChips were subsequently assembled and buried in the site of origin. As a comparison, bacteria from the same soil sample were cultivated directly on TSA and incubated at 28 °C for two weeks. Thereafter, agar plugs from the iChip were transferred to TSA plates to allow microcolonies within each plug to grow. Each pure isolate from both cultivation approaches that grew was then pooled and extracted for total DNA prior to 16S rRNA gene amplification and sequencing via Illumina MiSeq. Taxonomic abundance comparison revealed that the bacterial taxa at the level of order were significantly different between the two approaches, particularly in the orders, Burkholderiales, Xanthomonodales, Enterobacteriales, and Actinomycetales (differences of 12.0, 7.1, 8.0, and 4.2%, respectively). This indicated that the 3D-printed iChips present a possible low-cost tool for the isolation of bacterial genera that may not be able to grow on media directly in vitro.

Antipathogenic properties and applications of low-dimensional materials

A major health concern of the 21st century is the rise of multi-drug resistant pathogenic microbial species. Recent technological advancements have led to considerable opportunities for low-dimensional materials (LDMs) as potential next-generation antimicrobials. LDMs have demonstrated antimicrobial behaviour towards a variety of pathogenic bacterial and fungal cells, due to their unique physicochemical properties. This review provides a critical assessment of current LDMs that have exhibited antimicrobial behaviour and their mechanism of action. Future design considerations and constraints in deploying LDMs for antimicrobial applications are discussed. It is envisioned that this review will guide future design parameters for LDM-based antimicrobial applications.

Influence of elemental sulfur on cadmium bioavailability, microbial community in paddy soil and Cd accumulation in rice plants

Cadmium (Cd) is highly toxic to living organisms and the contamination of Cd in paddy soil in China has received much attention. In the present study, by conducting pot experiment, the influence of S fertilizer (S⁰) on rice growth, iron plaque formation, Cd accumulation in rice plants and bacterial community in rice rhizosphere soil was investigated. The biomass of rice plants was significantly increased by S⁰ addition (19.5–73.6%). The addition of S⁰ increased the formation of iron plaque by 24.3–45.8%, meanwhile the amount of Cd sequestered on iron plaque increased. In soil treated with 5 mg/kg Cd, addition of 0.2 g/kg S⁰ decreased the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) extractable Cd by 60.0%. The application of S⁰ significantly decreased the concentration of Cd in rice grain by 12.1% (0.1 g/kg) and 36.6% (0.2 g/kg) respectively. The addition of S⁰ significantly increased the ratio of Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes in rice rhizosphere soil. Meanwhile, the ratio of Planctomycetes and Chloroflexi decreased. The results indicated that promoting Fe- and S-reducing and residue decomposition bacterial in the rhizosphere by S⁰ may be one biological reason for reducing Cd risk in the soil-rice system.

Cadmium Immobilization in the Rhizosphere and Plant Cellular Detoxification: Role of Plant-Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria as a Sustainable Solution

Food is the major cadmium (Cd)-exposure pathway from agricultural soils to humans and other living entities and must be reduced in an effective way. A plant can select beneficial microbes, like plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), depending upon the nature of root exudates in the rhizosphere, for its own benefits, such as plant growth promotion as well as protection from metal toxicity. This review intends to seek out information on the rhizo-immobilization of Cd in polluted soils using the PGPR along with plant nutrient fertilizers. This review suggests that the rhizo-immobilization of Cd by a combination of PGPR and nanohybrid-based plant nutrient fertilizers would be a potential and sustainable technology for phytoavailable Cd immobilization in the rhizosphere and plant cellular detoxification, by keeping the plant nutrition flow and green dynamics of plant nutrition and boosting the plant growth and development under Cd stress.

Fungal bioremediation of soil co-contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and toxic metals

Abstract

Much research has been carried out on the bacterial bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and toxic metals but much less is known about the potential of fungi in sites that are co-contaminated with both classes of pollutants. This article documents the roles of fungi in soil polluted with both petroleum hydrocarbons and toxic metals as well as the mechanisms involved in the biotransformation of such substances. Soil characteristics (e.g., structural components, pH, and temperature) and intracellular or excreted extracellular enzymes and metabolites are crucial factors which affect the efficiency of combined pollutant transformations. At present, bioremediation of soil co-contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons and toxic metals is mostly focused on the removal, detoxification, or degradation efficiency of single or composite pollutants of each type. Little research has been carried out on the metabolism of fungi in response to complex pollutant stress. To overcome current bottlenecks in understanding fungal bioremediation, the potential of new approaches, e.g., gradient diffusion film technology (DGT) and metabolomics, is also discussed.

Kinetic process of Cr(III) in contaminated soils characterized by diffusive gradients in thin films technique

Trivalent chromium has historically been considered as an environmentally benign micronutrient due to its low mobility; however, its kinetic process in soil remains poorly understood. Here, the labile fraction and kinetics of Cr(III) in contaminated soils were explored using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and the DGT-induced fluxes model. In contrast to the low mobility of Cr(III) in soils reported by the classic equilibrium partitioning method, we observed steady resupply from the solid phase through a dynamic process, wherein Cr(III) in the soils were maintained by an intermediate resupply rate with the R values at their maximum (R_max). The resupply of Cr(III) was influenced by the kinetic parameters and soil properties: (i) the resupply ability (R-R_diff) was influenced by pH and response time (T_c); (ii) R_max, was controlled by pH, T_c, and the desorption rate (k_-1); (iii) k_-1 was influenced by pH and soil texture. This study presents the new information regarding the kinetics of Cr(III) in soils and demonstrates that Cr(III) is steadily resupplied by soil, which is not captured by equilibrium-based methods, furthering our insight of the geochemical behavior of Cr(III). This information was essential for understanding the toxicity of Cr and improving remediation.

Bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles in the soil-rice plant system

To determine the bioavailability and translocation of metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs) in the soil-rice plant system, we examined the accumulation and micro-distribution of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CuO NPs and CeO₂ NPs (50, 100 and 500 mg/kg) in the paddy soil and rice plants under flooded condition for 30 days using single-step chemical extraction and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique combined with micro X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (μ-XRF). The results show that various MONPs changed the soil properties, especially the redox potential was enhanced to -165.33 to -75.33 mV compared to the control. The extraction efficiency of Zn, Cu and Ce in the paddy soil from high to low was EDTA, DTPA, CaCl₂ and DGT. Moreover, exposure to 500 mg/kg CuO NPs and CeO₂ NPs induced the primary accumulation of Cu and Ce elements in rice roots as high as 235.48 mg Cu/kg and 164.84 mg Ce/kg, respectively, while the Zn concentration in shoots was up to 313.18 mg/kg under highest ZnO NPs with a 1.5 of translocation factor. The effect of MONPs on the plant growth was mainly related to the chemical species and solubility of MONPs. Micro-XRF analysis shows that Zn was mostly located in the root cortex while Cu was primarily accumulated in the root exodermis and few Ce distributed in the root. Pearson correlation coefficients indicate that only DTPA-extracted metals in soil were significantly and well correlated to the Zn, Cu and Ce accumulation in rice seedlings exposed to MONPs. This work is of great significance for evaluating the environmental risks of MONPs in soil and ensuring the safety of agricultural products.

Phytohormones-induced senescence efficiently promotes the transport of cadmium from roots into shoots of plants: A novel strategy for strengthening of phytoremediation

Due to the long growth period of plants, phytoremediation is time costly. Improving the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in shoots of plants will promote the efficiency of phytoremediation. In this study, two senescence-relative phytohormones, abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA), were applied to strengthening phytoremediation of Cd by tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea S.). Under hydroponic culture, phytohormones treatment increased the Cd content of shoots 11.4-fold over the control, reaching 316.3 mg/kg (dry weight). Phytohormones-induced senescence contributes to the transport of heavy metals, and HMA3 was found to play a key role in this process. Additionally, this strategy could strengthen the accumulation of Cu and Zn in tall fescue shoots. Moreover, in soil pot culture, the strategy increased shoot Cd contents 2.56-fold over the control in tall fescue, and 2.55-fold over the control in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.), indicating its comprehensive adaptability and potential use in the field. In summary, senescence-induced heavy metal transport is developed as a novel strategy to strengthen phytoremediation. The strategy could be applied at the end of phytoremediation with an additional short duration (7 days) with comprehensive adaptability, and markedly strengthen the phytoremediation in the field.

Lead was mobilized in acid silty clay loam paddy soil with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) amendment

The immobilization effectiveness between Pb and phosphorus in soil varies with soil types. To clarify the effect of phosphate on the availability of Pb in agricultural soil, a culture experiment with three types of paddy soil was performed with potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP) added. EDTA, DGT and in-situ solution extraction methods were used to represent different available Pb content. Results showed that the concentration of EDTA-Pb in HN soil was slightly elevated after exogenous KDP added. The supplement of 300 mg/kg KDP significantly increased the content of soluble Pb in both acid silty clay loam soil and neutral silty loam soil (increased by 104.65% and 65.12%, respectively). However, there was no significant influence of KDP on the concentration of DGT extracted Pb. XANES results showed that Pb(OH)₂, PbHPO₄, humic acid-Pb and GSH-Pb were the major speciation of Pb in soil colloids. The proportion of Pb(OH)₂ and humic acid-bounded Pb in soil colloids were elevated after exogenous KDP added. Our results indicated that there was a mobilization effect of KDP on Pb by increasing the amount of colloidal Pb in soil solution, especially in acid silty clay loam paddy soil. Such colloid-facilitated transport might promote the uptake of Pb in rice and pose a potential threat to human health.

A comprehensive understanding of enhanced Pb mobilization in sediments caused by algal blooms

A good understanding of lead (Pb) mobilization in eutrophic lakes is a key to the accurate assessment of Pb pollution. In this work, dissolved and labile Pb was determined by both high resolution dialysis (HR-Peeper) and diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) in sediment-water profiles of the hyper-eutrophic Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu on a monthly basis during one year. The drinking water standards for dissolved Pb of the World Health Organization (10μg/L) and those of China were exceeded in the overlying water (20.79-118.5μg/L). Out of which, a total of five months even exceeded the fisheries water quality limitation (50μg/L) in China. The algal blooms created an anaerobic environment in the surface sediments in July. The reductive conditions led to the dissolution of Fe/Mn and this caused the release of Pb, followed by organic matter complexation. This was supported by the coincident changes of dissolved Pb with dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sediments under anaerobic incubation. Algae residue decomposition in October caused another distinct release of Pb, but this process should be considerably suppressed by increased sulfide precipitation and pyrite adsorption of Pb ion. These results indicated that Pb mobilization in sediments can be significantly enhanced by algal blooms in eutrophic lakes, indicating that further attention should be paid to Pb pollution in waters with harmful algal blooms.

Rationally designed tubular coaxial-electrode copper ionization cells (CECICs) harnessing non-uniform electric field for efficient water disinfection

Though well known for its anti-microbial property, copper is usually not considered for drinking water disinfection because of its health risk to human bodies under efficient biocidal concentration. Herein, we have rationally designed and constructed a tubular coaxial-electrode copper ionization cell (CECIC) that enables superior disinfection performance (~6-log removal of E. coli) with a very low effluent copper concentration (~200 μg/L). A non-uniform electric field with enhanced strength near the center electrode is generated in the chamber attributed to the coaxial center-outer electrode configuration. Exposure to the strong electric field subsequently increases the permeability of cell membrane, the excessive uptake of Cu ions into microbes, and thus the reinforced bacteria inactivation. The in-situ ionization results in a Cu ion concentration gradient with higher concentrations in the regions closer to the center. In addition, being driven by the electrophoresis and dielectrophoresis forces, the bacterial cells are transported to the vicinity of the center electrode, where both the electric field strength and Cu ion concentration are higher. These mechanisms in the CECIC synergistically result in the high inactivation efficiency with low Cu concentration in the effluent. The low-cost, high-efficiency, and disinfection-byproduct-free CECIC has shown significant potential in point-of-use applications.

Conventional and novel techniques for the determination of Hg uptake by lettuce in amended agricultural peri-urban soils

Peri-urban agriculture provides environmental benefits to the nearby urban areas. However, domestic and industrial infrastructures can be sources of pollution that can affect agricultural production. In this work, the diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) technique was used to assess the bioavailability of mercury (Hg) in organic-amended agricultural soils, and uptake by lettuce. Two different amendments were studied individually in three different sets using a wood-based biochar at two rates (3% and 6%, w/w), and compost at one rate (30% w/w). The effect of the amendments on Hg bioavailability, mobility and uptake was investigated by means of both DGT analyses and accumulation of Hg by lettuce. DGT manufactured in-house devices with polyacrylamide gel using both open and restricted diffusive layers (ODL and RDL, respectively) were used to determine organic and inorganic Hg labile species in soils, respectively. The Hg concentration in lettuce leaves and roots were analyzed and compared with DGT measurements to predict the uptake of Hg from the different organic-amended soils and the non-amended soils. Results show that the application of biochar reduces the bioavailability of Hg in soil and, in consequence, the Hg uptake by lettuce. Inorganic Hg species were predominant in all the different sets of the experiment (62-97%), although the addition of the different amendments reduced the free ionic species in soil.

A novel method for evaluating the potential release of trace metals associated with rainfall leaching/runoff from urban soils

The release of pollutants in soils owing to rainfall is a major challenge related to urbanization. Here, urban soils from different functional zones were collected to evaluate the release risk and estimate their annual release amounts of trace metals (Co and Ni) using multiple techniques, including diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT), DGT-induced fluxes in sediments (DIFS) model, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The results indicate that the average concentration of Co (6.55 mg kg^-1) was slightly lower than that of the local soil background, whereas for Ni, the trend was reversed. Risk assessments based on total concentrations show that the soil samples were uncontaminated with Co while uncontaminated to moderately contaminated with Ni. However, the mobility coefficients indicate that Co posed low to medium risk, while Ni posed low risk. Hence, further investigation of DGT measurements and DIFS model show that the DGT-measured Co and Ni concentrations were lower than the corresponding concentrations in solution, leading to low R values and the partial resupply of Co and Ni from the solid phase. The FTIR spectra and elemental analysis suggest that because of the electrostatic attraction and complexation of the hydrosilicate minerals and organic matters, the metal resupply was restrained, resulting in them being only a partial resupply. Moreover, the mobility of Co was mainly controlled by the resupply ability, response time, and desorption rate; while for Ni, the particle concentration and porosity played important roles in determining mobility. In addition, the release amounts of the trace metals were quantified using the binary mixing equation. The estimated annual release amounts of Co and Ni in Pingshan District were 0.44-3.54 t and 1.93-16.47 t, respectively. This study provides an effective in-situ method for estimating the release amounts of trace metals in soils during rainfall combining DGT and DIFS model.

Heavy metal uptake by water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) from paper mill effluent (PME): experimental and prediction modeling studies

The present paper reports the heavy metal uptake by water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes L.) from paper mill effluent (PME) with its prediction modeling studies. Lab scale phytoremediation experiments were performed in glass aquariums to grow P. stratiotes in 0% (bore well water as a control), 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% concentrations of PME. The influence of pH and heavy metal concentration in PME for the effective uptake and accumulation of heavy metal contents (∆Y: mg/kg) in plant tissues was modeled using two-factor multiple linear regression. The results showed that the selected input variables were supportive to develop prediction models with higher linear regression (R² > 0.72), high model efficiency (ME: 0.92-0.99), low mean average normalizing error (MANE < 0.02), and statistically significant F > Prob values. Kruskal-Wallis one-way post hoc test indicated that the contents of Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn in the roots, leaves, and whole plant were affected by PME concentration while the contents of Mn did not. The correlation studies showed that the bioaccumulation of heavy metals was found both element and PME concentration specific. This work represents an effective method to model heavy metal uptake by P. stratiotes from PME. Furthermore, this methodology can also be adopted for predicting effective metal uptake by plant species being used for the phytoremediation of heavy metals from industrial effluents.

Seasonal changes of lead mobility in sediments in algae- and macrophyte-dominated zones of the lake

This study examined lead (Pb) pollution in algae- and macrophytes-dominated sediments, using diffusive gradient in thin films (DGT) and dialysis (HR-Peeper) techniques. Lead pollution varied by season in the two different ecotype sediments. In the algae-dominated zone, the highest concentrations of DGT-labile Pb and dissolved Pb occurred in April and July, respectively. The reductive dissolution of Fe/Mn oxides was identified as an important driver for Pb releases in April and July. This was supported by the decrease of the reducible fraction of Pb in sediments during those sampling periods. Furthermore, dissolved organic matter (DOM) complexation with Pb in sediments also significantly increased the dissolved Pb concentrations in July. The Pb-DOM complexes accounted for 95% of the total chemical species of Pb in pore water, calculated by Visual MINTEQ 3.1 model. Low concentrations of labile and dissolved Pb were observed in October and January; these resulted from the formation of Pb-sulfide precipitates and adsorption by Fe/Mn oxides. It was supported by the high rate of Pb(HS)₂ precipitation (saturation index > 0), at 36%, in October samples and the high reducible fraction of Pb in sediments in January samples. In the macrophytes-dominated region, there was a decrease of labile and dissolved Pb concentrations in April and July. It is likely because of the uptake of Pb by submerged macrophyte roots and the Fe/Mn plaques in the root surface. High concentrations of labile and dissolved Pb were observed in October and January, likely resulting from the DOM complexation with Pb in sediments. This was supported by the fact that the Pb-DOM complexes accounted for 90% and 87% of the total chemical species of Pb in October and January, respectively.

Development and evaluation of diffusive gradients in thin films based on nano-sized zinc oxide particles for the in situ sampling of tetracyclines in pig breeding wastewater

The pollution of antibiotics, including tetracyclines (TCs), in aquatic environments has become an issue of concern in recent years. Herein, an in situ sampling of TCs in pig breeding wastewater that utilizes the technique of diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT), based on commercial nanosized ZnO (nanoZnO) particles as the potential effective binding agent and a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane as the diffusion layer, was developed. The diffusion coefficients of tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) in a PES membrane at 25 °C were (1.37 ± 0.06) × 10^-6 cm² s^-1, (1.29 ± 0.05) × 10^-6 cm² s^-1 and (1.94 ± 0.07) × 10^-6 cm² s^-1, respectively. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of a gel disc containing 2.5 g L^-1 of nanoZnO particles were as high as 3.93 ± 0.20 mg disc^-1 for TC, 3.21 ± 0.20 mg disc^-1 for OTC and 4.62 ± 0.22 mg disc^-1 for CTC. Both a solution pH in the range of 5-9 and an ionic strength (as pNaCl) in the range of 1-3 had an insignificant influence on the TCs uptake by nanoZnO-DGT samplers. There was no significant influence of fulvic acid or tannic acid on the TC uptake by nanoZnO-DGT samplers at the tested mass ratios. For all spiked freshwater samples, there was no notable interference of matrices on the performance of the nanoZnO-DGT samplers, suggesting that the nanoZnO-DGT samplers yielded satisfactory results for the uptake of TCs at concentrations existing in the spiked freshwater samples. Field deployment of the nanoZnO-DGT samplers in pig breeding wastewater also exhibited excellent precision and accuracy, indicating that the nanoZnO-DGT samplers could be used as a promising method for the in situ sampling of TC antibiotics in aquatic environments.

In situ arsenic speciation and the release kinetics in coastal sediments: A case study in Daya Bay, South China Sea

In-situ study on arsenic speciation and the release kinetics in marine sediments was scarce. In this study, the distributions of labile As and their speciation in coastal sediments of Daya Bay were obtained by separate diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) probes. Results showed that the DGT-labile As(V) was the main speciation in surface sediments (from -20 to 0 mm) with a concentration range of 0.07-3.05 μg·L^-1, while the labile As(III) was the main speciation in deep layers of sediments (from -100 to -20 mm). In coastal areas, mariculture farms was the most dominated contributor to As(V) contamination in surface sediments. Both the apparent diffusion flux estimation and the DGT induced flux in sediments (DIFS) simulation indicated that As(V) contamination in surface sediments of mariculture, harbor and petrochemical areas suffered the potential risk of As(V) release into the overlying water from sediments. DIFS modeling also found that the sediments of mariculture farms were the main sediment As pools. Linear regression analysis indicated that the mobility of As mainly attributed to the As(V) in sediments.

Monitoring the Activated Sludge Activities Affected by Industrial Toxins via an Early-Warning System Based on the Relative Oxygen Uptake Rate (ROUR) Index

Shock load from industrial wastewater is known to harm the microbial activities of the activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and disturb their performance. This study developed a system monitoring the activated sludge activities based on the relative oxygen uptake rate (ROUR) and explored the influential factors with wastewater and the activated sludge samples collected from a typical WWTP in the Taihu Lake of southern Jiangsu province, China. The ROUR was affected by the concentration of toxic substances, mixed liquid suspended solids (MLSS), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and pH. Higher toxin contents significantly decreased the ROUR and the EC50 value of Zn2+, Ni2+, Cr(VI), Cu2+, and Cd2+ was 13.40, 15.54, 97.56, 12.01, and 14.65 mg/L, respectively. The ROUR declined with the increasing HRT and MLSS above 2000 mg/L had buffering capacities for the impacts of toxic substances to some extent. The ROUR remained stable within a broad range pH (6–10), covering most of the operational pH in WWTPs and behaving as an appropriate indicator for monitoring the shock load. A toxicity model assessing and predicting the ROUR was developed and fitted well with experimental data. Coupling the ROUR monitoring system and toxicity model, an online early-warning system was assembled and successfully used for predicting the toxicity of different potential toxic metals. This study provides a new universal toxicity model and an online early-warning system for monitoring the shock load from industrial wastewater, which is useful for improving the performance of WWTPs.

Effects of ZnSO4 and Zn-EDTA broadcast or banded to soil on Zn bioavailability in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and Zn fractions in soil

Human Zn deficiency is prevalent in developing countries, and staple grains are commonly bio-fortified to increase their Zn contents. We measured Zn content, distribution, and bioavailability in calcareous soil and in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.) in Shaanxi Province, China, when either an organic Zn-ethylenediaminetetraacetate (Zn-EDTA) or an inorganic zinc sulfate heptahydrate (ZnSO₄·7H₂O) Zn source was banded below the seedbed or broadcasted into soil. Compared with ZnSO₄·7H₂O, Zn-EDTA fertilization produced higher Zn concentration and uptake in wheat plants. However, Zn bioavailability in grain remained low, with [phytate]/[Zn] ratio >15 and the resulting estimated dietary total absorbed zinc (TAZ) < 3 mg Zn/d. ZnSO₄ banded into soil had little short-term effect on grain Zn concentration but had a high residual effect and promoted the maintenance of a high concentration of the Zn fraction bound to loose organic matter (LOM-Zn) in rhizosphere soil. Both ZnSO₄ and Zn-EDTA were more efficient if uniformly mixed through the soil than if banded to soil. Both ZnSO₄ and Zn-EDTA had limited effects on Zn bioavailability in wheat plants due to the high rate of Zn fixation in this calcareous soil.
