Insights and Model for Understanding Natural Organic Matter Adsorption onto Mixed Adsorbents

Adsorption of oxytetracycline on subalpine meadow soil from Zoige Plateau, China: Effects of the coexisting Cu2

Subalpine meadow soil with high moisture and humus content is a unique soil type in the Zoige Plateau. Oxytetracycline and copper are common soil contaminants which interact to form compound pollution. Oxytetracycline's adsorption on natural subalpine meadow soil and its components (humin and the soil without iron and manganese oxides) was studied in the laboratory with and without the presence of Cu2+. The effects of temperature, pH and Cu2+ concentration were documented in batch experiments, allowing deduction of the main sorption mechanisms. The adsorption process had two phases: one rapid, taking place in the first 6 h, and another slower, reaching equilibrium at around 36 h. The adsorption kinetics were pseudo-second-order, and the adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model at 25 °C. Higher concentrations oxytetracycline increased the adsorption, but higher temperature did not. The presence of Cu2+ had no effect on the equilibrium time, but the amount and rate adsorbed were much greater with Cu2+ concentration increased (except for the soil without iron and manganese oxides). The amounts adsorbed with/without Cu2+ were in the order the humin from subalpine meadow soil (7621 and 7186 μg/g) > the subalpine meadow soil (7298 and 6925 μg/g) > the soil without iron and manganese oxides (7092 and 6862 μg/g), but the difference among those adsorbents was slight. It indicates that humin is a particularly important adsorbent in the subalpine meadow soil. The amount of oxytetracycline adsorbed was greatest at pH 5-9. In addition, Surface complexation through metal bridging was the most important sorption mechanism. Cu2+ and oxytetracycline formed positively-charged complex that was adsorbed and then formed a ternary complex "adsorbent-Cu(II)-oxytetracycline", in which Cu2+ acted as a bridge. These findings provide a good scientific basis for soil remediation, and for assessing environmental health risks.

Towards deep purification of secondary textile effluent by using a dynamic membrane process: Pilot-scale verification

The present investigation used regular powered activated carbon (PAC) as the dynamic membrane (DM) material and successfully built-up a pilot-scale DM system for deep purification of the secondary textile effluent, which aimed at verifying the technical and economic feasibility of the DM with real secondary textile effluent. The hydrodynamic experiments indicated that the filtration resistance gradually increased along with the operation of DM system, and among which, the PAC size was the most important influencing factor. More dosage and smaller sized PAC were beneficial to enhance the purification effect of micro-organic pollutants, but they simultaneously improved the operational costs, which implied that the adoption of DM materials should comprehensively consider the removal results and the type and dosage of DM materials for obtaining an optimal result, and the operational costs would be drastically reduced by regenerating the wasted PAC. More than 50% residual micro-organic pollutants were further removed by the system, and they were mainly some aliphatic and aromatic compounds, which were the main refractory organic pollutants in most textile effluents. It was also proved by the pilot-scale DM study that the removed residual pollutants from the secondary textile effluent were mainly aromatic protein II. Due to the contained complex functional groups in their molecular structure, soluble microbial metabolites were relatively easier to be removed by the DM layer.

Pre-deposited dynamic membrane filtration - A review

A dynamic membrane (DM) is a layer of particles deposited via permeation drag onto a conventional membrane, such that the deposited particles act as a secondary membrane that minimizes fouling of the primary membrane to lower transmembrane pressures (TMP) and enable higher permeate fluxes. Since the first DM was created in 1966 at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, numerous studies have reported synthesis of DMs using various materials and explored their abilities to perform reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF) and microfiltration (MF). DMs are classified into two categories, namely, (i) self-formed, whereby the feed constituents form the DM; and (ii) pre-deposited, whereby the DM is formed by a layer of particles other than the feed prior to introduction of the feed. This paper endeavors to present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art on the latter. Key materials used as DMs, their formation and various factors influencing it, regeneration of DMs and modifications to DM systems for performance enhancement are discussed. The role of DMs in preventing fouling in the primary membrane (PM) is explained. The applications of DMs in four major areas, namely, salt and organic solute rejection, treatment of industrial effluents, treatment of water and wastewater, and oily-wastewater treatment are reviewed. Furthermore, technical and economic advantages of DMs over conventional processes are considered, and challenges in current DM research are discussed. Finally, directions for future research are suggested.

One-pot synthesis of multi-functional and environmental friendly tannic acid polymer with Fe3+ and formaldehyde as double crosslinking agents for selective removal of cation pollutants

A novel multi-functional and environmental friendly tannic acid polymer (Fe³⁺-TA-HCHO) with Fe³⁺ and formaldehyde as double crosslinking agents together with cysteine as heteroatom source was prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Characterization with transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and elemental analysis demonstrated that the Fe³⁺-TA-HCHO possessed uniform structure and particle size as well as plentiful functional groups. The resulted Fe³⁺-TA-HCHO material as a adsorbent to remove methylene blue, sunset yellow, Pb²⁺, Hg²⁺, and AsO₃^3- from water. The results suggested that Fe³⁺-TA-HCHO polymer (pHpzc is 2.33) showed different adsorption properties for anionic pollutants (sunset yellow and AsO₃^3-) and cationic pollutants (methylene blue, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺). The material exhibited remarkable selectivity for adsorption and separation of pollutants. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from Langmuir model for methylene blue, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺ were 154.32, 819.67, and 699.30 mg g^-1, respectively. This is the first time that tannic acid polymer is synthesized by double crosslinking method, which not only developed a promising adsorbent for selective removal of cation pollutants, but also opened up a new avenue for synthesis and application of tannic acid polymer.
