Guanine-Based DNA Biosensor Amplified with Pt/SWCNTs Nanocomposite as Analytical Tool for Nanomolar Determination of Daunorubicin as an Anticancer Drug: A Docking/Experimental Investigation

Electrochemical sensing of Hg(ii) in chicken liver and snail shell extract samples using novel modified SDA/MWCNT electrodes

Heavy metal ions (Hg(ii)) were detected in fresh chicken liver and snail shell extract samples using novel synthesised SDA/MWCNT-modified electrodes. The synthesized N,N'-bis(salicylaldehyde)-1,2-diaminobenzene (SDA) ligand was characterized via FT-IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The hydroxyl and imine functional groups present in SDA act as active sites and bind to the MWCNT surface. The surface morphology of the modified SDA/MWCNT electrode exhibited a star-like crystal structure and the preconcentration of Hg(ii)-SDA/MWCNTs lead to a crystal cloud structure, as characterized by SEM with EDX. The enhancement of current and conductance of the SDA/MWCNT- and MWCNT-modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The conductance (σ) values for the MWCNT- and SDA/MWCNT-modified electrodes are 234.1 × 10-5 S cm-1 and 358.4 × 10-5 S cm-1, respectively, as determined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Consequently, an electrochemical sensor with outstanding performance in terms of reproducibility, stability and anti-interference ability was fabricated. The stripping analysis of Hg(ii) was performed using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Using SWASV, a linear range of Hg(ii) response was found to be 1.3 to 158 μg L-1, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.24 μg L-1. Finally, the results of the recovered value of Hg(ii) in freshly prepared chicken liver and snail shell extract samples by SWASV were compared with the atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) results.

Leveraging electrochemical sensors to improve efficiency of cancer detection

Electrochemical biosensors have emerged as a promising technology for cancer detection due to their high sensitivity, rapid response, low cost, and capability for non-invasive detection. Recent advances in nanomaterials like nanoparticles, graphene, and nanowires have enhanced sensor performance to allow for cancer biomarker detection, like circulating tumor cells, nucleic acids, proteins and metabolites, at ultra-low concentrations. However, several challenges need to be addressed before electrochemical biosensors can be clinically implemented. These include improving sensor selectivity in complex biological media, device miniaturization for implantable applications, integration with data analytics, handling biomarker variability, and navigating regulatory approval. This editorial critically examines the prospects of electrochemical biosensors for efficient, low-cost and minimally invasive cancer screening. We discuss recent developments in nanotechnology, microfabrication, electronics integration, multiplexing, and machine learning that can help realize the potential of these sensors. However, significant interdisciplinary efforts among researchers, clinicians, regulators and the healthcare industry are still needed to tackle limitations in selectivity, size constraints, data interpretation, biomarker validation, toxicity and commercial translation. With committed resources and pragmatic strategies, electrochemical biosensors could enable routine early cancer detection and dramatically reduce the global cancer burden.

Bioengineered Smart Nanocarriers for Breast Cancer Treatment: Adorned Carbon-Based Nanocomposites with Silver and Palladium Complexes for Efficient Drug Delivery

Biocompatible and bioactive carbon-based nanocomposites are ingeniously designed and fabricated with the aim of enhancing drug delivery applicability in breast cancer treatment. Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are utilized as nanocarriers for increasing penetrability into cells and the loading capacity. What sets our study apart is the strategic incorporation of the two different complexes of silver (AgL2) and palladium (PdL2) with the carboxamide-based ligand C9H7N3OS (L), which have been synthesized and decorated on nanocarriers alongside doxorubicin (DOX) for stabilizing DOX by π-π interactions and hydrogen bonding. Although DOX is a well-known cancer therapy agent, the efficacy of DOX is hindered owing to drug resistance, poor internalization, and limited site specificity. Aside from stabilizing DOX on nanocarriers, our carbon-based nanocarriers are tailored to act as a precision-guided missile, strategically by adorning with target-sensitive complexes. Based on the literature, carboxamide ligands can connect to overexpressed receptors on cancerous cells and inhibit them from proliferation signaling. Also, the complexes have an antibacterial activity that can control the infection caused by decreasing white blood cells and necrosis of cancerous cells. A high-concentration cytotoxicity assay revealed that decorating PdL2 on a DOX-containing nanocarrier not only increased cytotoxicity to breast cancerous cell lines (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7) but also revealed higher cell viability on a normal cell line (MCF-10A). The drug release screening results showed that the presence of PdL2 led to 72 h correlate release behavior in acidic and physiological pH profiles, while the AgL2-containing nanocomposite showed an analogue behavior for just 6 h and the release of DOX continued and after about 100 h hit the top.

Hydrogels for Chemical Sensing and Biosensing

The development and synthesis of hydrogels for chemical and biosensing are of great value. Hydrogels can be tailored to its own physical structure, chemical properties, biocompatibility, and sensitivity to external stimuli when being used in a specific environment. Herein, hydrogels and their applications in chemical and biosensing are mainly covered. In particular, it is focused on the manner in which hydrogels serve as sensing materials to a specific analyte. Different types of responsive hydrogels are hence introduced and summarized. Researchers can modify different chemical groups on the skeleton of the hydrogels, which make them as good chemical and biosensing materials. Hydrogels have great application potential for chemical and biosensing in the biomedical field and some emerging fields, such as wearable devices.

Different spectrophotometric methods for simultaneous quantitation of Vericiguat and its alkaline degradation product: a comparative study with greenness profile assessment

Investigations concerning novel drugs and their induced degradation products are necessary for clinical research and quality control in the pharmaceutical industry. Four spectrophotometric techniques have been performed for simultaneous quantitation of Vericiguat (VER) and its alkali-induced degradation product (ADP) without prior separation. Method A is a dual wavelength method (DW) that estimates the absorbance difference at 314-328 nm, and 246-262 nm for VER and ADP; respectively. Method B uses a ratio difference method (RD) to estimate the ratio spectrum's amplitude difference (DP318-342) and (DP284-292) for VER and ADP; respectively. Method C uses a first derivative ratio method (1DD) to estimate the peak ratio spectrum amplitude of the first derivative at 318 and 275 nm for VER and ADP; respectively. Method D uses the mean centering of the ratio spectra (MCR) to estimate amplitude values for VER and ADP at 337 and 292 nm; respectively. In a concentration range of 5.00-50.00 µg/mL for VER and 5.00-100.00 µg/mL for ADP, the methods were validated following ICH criteria and utilized to estimate VER in bulk and its dosage form. The methods' greenness was assessed via three tools: the green analytical procedure index (GAPI), analytical eco-scale, and analytical greenness assessment (AGREE).

Application of lipid and polymeric-based nanoparticles for treatment of inner ear infections via XGBoost

Taking hearing loss as a prevalent sensory disorder, the restricted permeability of blood flow and the blood-labyrinth barrier in the inner ear pose significant challenges to transporting drugs to the inner ear tissues. The current options for hear loss consist of cochlear surgery, medication, and hearing devices. There are some restrictions to the conventional drug delivery methods to treat inner ear illnesses, however, different smart nanoparticles, including inorganic-based nanoparticles, have been presented to regulate drug administration, enhance the targeting of particular cells, and decrease systemic adverse effects. Zinc oxide nanoparticles possess distinct characteristics that facilitate accurate drug delivery, improved targeting of specific cells, and minimized systemic adverse effects. Zinc oxide nanoparticles was studied for targeted delivery and controlled release of therapeutic drugs within specific cells. XGBoost model is used on the Wideband Absorbance Immittance (WAI) measuring test after cochlear surgery. There were 90 middle ear effusion samples (ages = 1-10 years, mean = 34.9 months) had chronic middle ear effusion for four months and verified effusion for seven weeks. In this research, 400 sets underwent wideband absorbance imaging (WAI) to assess inner ear performance after surgery. Among them, 60 patients had effusion Otitis Media with Effusion (OME), while 30 ones had normal ears (control). OME ears showed significantly lower absorbance at 250, 500, and 1000 Hz than controls (p < 0.001). Absorbance thresholds >0.252 (1000 Hz) and >0.330 (2000 Hz) predicted a favorable prognosis (p < 0.05, odds ratio: 6). It means that cochlear surgery and WAI showed high function in diagnosis and treatment of inner ear infections. Regarding the R2 0.899 and RMSE 1.223, XGBoost shows excellent specificity and sensitivity for categorizing ears as having effusions absent or present or partial or complete flows present, with areas under the curve (1-0.944).

Unlabelled LRET biosensor based on double-stranded DNA for the detection of anthraquinone anticancer drugs

Based on upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) as energy donor and herring sperm DNA (hsDNA) as molecular recognition element, an unlabelled upconversion luminescence (UCL) affinity biosensor was constructed for the detection of anthraquinone (AQ) anticancer drugs in biological fluids. AQ anticancer drugs can insert into the double helix structure of hsDNA on the surface of UCNPs, thereby shortening the distance from UCNPs. Therefore, the luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) phenomenon is effectively triggered between UCNPs and AQ anticancer drugs. Hence, AQ anticancer drugs can be quantitatively detected according to the UCL quenching rate. The biosensor showed good sensitivity and stability for the detection of daunorubicin (DNR) and doxorubicin (ADM). For the detection of DNR, the linear range is 1-100 μg·mL-1 with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.60 μg·mL-1, and for ADM, the linear range is 0.5-100 μg·mL-1 with a LOD of 0.38 μg·mL-1. The proposed biosensor provides a convenient method for monitoring AQ anticancer drugs in clinical biological fluids in the future.

Plasmonic Nanoparticle-Enhanced Optical Techniques for Cancer Biomarker Sensing

This review summarizes recent advances in leveraging localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) nanotechnology for sensitive cancer biomarker detection. LSPR arising from noble metal nanoparticles under light excitation enables the enhancement of various optical techniques, including surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), dark-field microscopy (DFM), photothermal imaging, and photoacoustic imaging. Nanoparticle engineering strategies are discussed to optimize LSPR for maximum signal amplification. SERS utilizes electromagnetic enhancement from plasmonic nanostructures to boost inherently weak Raman signals, enabling single-molecule sensitivity for detecting proteins, nucleic acids, and exosomes. DFM visualizes LSPR nanoparticles based on scattered light color, allowing for the ultrasensitive detection of cancer cells, microRNAs, and proteins. Photothermal imaging employs LSPR nanoparticles as contrast agents that convert light to heat, producing thermal images that highlight cancerous tissues. Photoacoustic imaging detects ultrasonic waves generated by LSPR nanoparticle photothermal expansion for deep-tissue imaging. The multiplexing capabilities of LSPR techniques and integration with microfluidics and point-of-care devices are reviewed. Remaining challenges, such as toxicity, standardization, and clinical sample analysis, are examined. Overall, LSPR nanotechnology shows tremendous potential for advancing cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring through the integration of nanoparticle engineering, optical techniques, and microscale device platforms.

Fabrication of an ultra-sensitive electrochemical DNA biosensor based on CT-DNA/NiFe2O4NPs/Au/CPE for detecting rizatriptan benzoate

A novel and first electrochemical biosensor based on Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as a biological component to measure an antimigraine drug, rizatriptan benzoate (RZB) for patients under treatment in biological samples was developed. A carbon paste electrode (CPE) was modified by calf thymus (CT) double-stranded (ds)-DNA, nickel ferrite magnetic nanoparticles (NiFe2O4NPs), and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The morphology of the CT-DNA/NiFe2O4NPs/AuNPs/CPE was characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The presence of NiFe2O4NPs and AuNPs was confirmed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) image of the NiFe2O4NPs/AuNPs/CPE surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) were used to determine the structure and electrochemical characteristics of the CT-DNA/NiFe2O4NPs/AuNPs/CPE. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to investigate the electrochemical behavior of RZB. Chronoamperometry (CA) was applied to study the effect of CT-DNA immobilization time on the peak oxidation current of RZB accumulated on the surface of the CT-DNA/NiFe2O4NPs/AuNPs/CPE. The results showed that, under optimum conditions, the prepared electrode responded linearly to RZB concentrations between 0.01 and 2.0 μM, with a 0.0033 μM detection limit (LOD) and 0.01 μM limit of quantification (LOQ). The parameters influencing the biosensor performance (temperature, CT-DNA immobilization time, and RZB/CT-DNA accumulation time) were optimized. DPV showed the displacement of the peak potential towards positive values and the reduction of its current, indicating that the drug could intercalate between the guanine base pairs of CT-DNA. Our biosensor was successfully applied for RZB measurement in human urine, blood serum, plasma samples, and tablets. The presented biosensor was fast response, sensitive, selective, cost-effective, and easy-to-use for RZB determination in pharmaceutical formulations and biological samples.

A nanoscale electrochemical guanine DNA-biosensor based on a flower-like nanocomposite of Tb-doped ZnO for the sensitive determination of pemetrexed

Pemetrexed is an antineoplastic drug used in chemotherapeutic treatments, especially in malignant mesothelioma and non-small cell lung carcinoma, but can also cause a variety of complications, like stomach pain, nausea, burning, vomiting, numbness, and tingling, emphasizing the need for an approach to quantify the drug in biological matrices. Herein, a DNA-based biosensor was introduced for pemetrexed determination. A hydrothermal approach was used for synthesizing flower-like nanoparticles (NPs) of zinc oxide (ZnO) doped with Tb (FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO). Moreover, energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), zeta potential, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were used for characterizing the as-prepared nanocomposite. According to the impedance analysis, FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO was accompanied by very good electrochemical functions for a simple transfer of electrons. In the case of the immobilization of double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid (ds-DNA) on the FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO and polypyrrole (PP)-modified pencil graphite electrode (ds-DNA/PP/FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO/PGE), a considerable enhancement was found in the electrochemical oxidation of guanine in ds-DNA residue bases. Since there was an interaction between ds-DNA and pemetrexed, the voltammetric current of guanine over the ds-DNA/PP/FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO/PGE declined in the presence of pemetrexed in the electrolytic solution. Moreover, under optimum conditions (25 mg L-1 of ds-DNA and 10 min incubation time, in acetate buffer at 25 °C), a linear decrease in the guanine signal was observed on the ds-DNA/PP/FL-NP Tb3+/ZnO/PGE as the pemetrexed concentration increased in the range from 0.001 μM to 175.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.17 nM. Finally, the new DNA-based biosensor was successfully used for determining pemetrexed in real samples, indicating its application potential.

Glycolysis in human cancers: Emphasis circRNA/glycolysis axis and nanoparticles in glycolysis regulation in cancer therapy

The metabolism of cancer has been an interesting hallmark and metabolic reprogramming, especially the change from oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria to glucose metabolism known as glycolysis occurs in cancer. The molecular profile of glycolysis, related molecular pathways and enzymes involved in this mechanism such as hexokinase have been fully understood. The glycolysis inhibition can significantly decrease tumorigenesis. On the other hand, circRNAs are new emerging non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecules with potential biological functions and aberrant expression in cancer cells which have received high attention in recent years. CircRNAs have a unique covalently closed loop structure which makes them highly stable and reliable biomarkers in cancer. CircRNAs are regulators of molecular mechanisms including glycolysis. The enzymes involved in the glycolysis mechanism such as hexokinase are regulated by circRNAs to modulate tumor progression. Induction of glycolysis by circRNAs can significantly increase proliferation rate of cancer cells given access to energy and enhance metastasis. CircRNAs regulating glycolysis can influence drug resistance in cancers because of theirimpact on malignancy of tumor cells upon glycolysis induction. TRIM44, CDCA3, SKA2 and ROCK1 are among the downstream targets of circRNAs in regulating glycolysis in cancer. Additionally, microRNAs are key regulators of glycolysis mechanism in cancer cells and can affect related molecular pathways and enzymes. CircRNAs sponge miRNAs to regulate glycolysis as a main upstream mediator. Moreover, nanoparticles have been emerged as new tools in tumorigenesis suppression and in addition to drug and gene delivery, then mediate cancer immunotherapy and can be used for vaccine development. The nanoparticles can delivery circRNAs in cancer therapy and they are promising candidates in regulation of glycolysis, its suppression and inhibition of related pathways such as HIF-1α. The stimuli-responsive nanoparticles and ligand-functionalized ones have been developed for selective targeting of glycolysis and cancer cells, and mediating carcinogenesis inhibition.

Application of nanotechnology in breast cancer screening under obstetrics and gynecology through the use of CNN and ANFIS

Breast cancer is the leading reason of death among women aged 35 to 54. Breast cancer diagnosis still presents significant challenges, and preventing the disease's most severe symptoms requires early detection. The role of nanotechnology in the tumor-treatment has recently attracted a lot of interest. In cancer therapies, nanotechnology plays a major role in the medication distribution process. Nanoparticles have the ability to target tumors. Nanoparticles are favorable and maybe preferable for usage in tumor detection and imaging due to their incredibly small size. Quantum dots, semiconductor crystals with increased labeling and imaging capabilities for cancer cells, are one of the particles that have received the most research attention. The design of the research is cross-sectional and descriptive. From April through September of 2020, data were gathered at the State Hospital. All pregnant women who came to the hospital throughout the first and second trimesters of the research's data collection were included in the study population. 100 pregnant women between the ages of 20 and 40 who had not yet had a mammogram comprised the research sample. 1100 digitized mammography images are included in the dataset, which was obtained from a hospital. Convolutional neural networks (CNN) were used to scan all images, and breast masses and mass comparisons were made using the malignant-benign categorization. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) then examined all of the data obtained by CNN in order to identify breast cancer early using inputs based on the nine different inputs. The precision of the mechanism used in this technique to determine the ideal radius value is significantly impacted by the radius value. Nine variables that define breast cancer indicators were utilized as inputs to the ANFIS classifier, which was then used to identify breast cancer. The parameters were given the necessary fuzzy functions, and the combined dataset was applied to train the method. Testing was initially performed by 30% of dataset that was later done with the real data obtained from the hospital. The accuracy of the results for 30% data was 84% (specificity =72.7%, sensitivity =86.7%) and the results for the real data was 89.8% (sensitivity =82.3%, specificity =75.9%), respectively.

Hyaluronic acid-functionalized lipoplexes and polyplexes as emerging nanocarriers for receptor-targeted cancer therapy

Cancer is an intricate disease that develops as a response to a combination of hereditary and environmental risk factors, which then result in a variety of changes to the genome. The cluster of differentiation (CD44) is a type of transmembrane glycoprotein that serves as a potential biomarker for cancer stem cells (CSC) and viable targets for therapeutic intervention in the context of cancer therapy. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a linear polysaccharide that exhibits a notable affinity for the CD44 receptor. This characteristic renders it a promising candidate for therapeutic interventions aimed at selectively targeting CD44-positive cancer cells. Treating cancer via non-viral vector-based gene delivery has changed the notion of curing illness through the incorporation of therapeutic genes into the organism. The objective of this review is to provide an overview of various hyaluronic acid-modified lipoplexes and polyplexes as potential drug delivery methods for specific forms of cancer by effectively targeting CD44.

Advanced multifunctional nano-lipid carrier loaded gel for targeted delivery of 5-flurouracil and cannabidiol against non-melanoma skin cancer

Non-melanoma skin cancer is one of the most common malignancies reported around the globe. Current treatment therapies fail to meet the desired therapeutic efficacy due to high degree of drug resistance. Thus, there is prominent demand in advancing the current conventional therapy to achieve desired therapeutic efficacy. To break the bottleneck, nanoparticles have been used as next generation vehicles that facilitate the efficient interaction with the cancer cells. Here, we developed combined therapy of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cannabidiol (CBD)-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier gel (FU-CBD-NLCs gel). The current investigation has been designed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of developed 5-Flurouracil and cannabidiol loaded combinatorial lipid-based nanocarrier (FU-CBD NLCs) gel for the effective treatment of skin cancer. Initially, confocal microscopy study results showed excellent uptake and deposition at epidermal and the dermal layer. Irritation studies performed by IR camera and HET cam shows FU-CBD NLCs was much more tolerated and less irritant compared to conventional treatment. Furthermore, gamma scintigraphy evaluation shows the skin retention behavior of the formulation. Later, in-ovo tumor remission studies were performed, and it was found that prepared FU-CBD NLCs was able to reduce tumor volume significantly compared to conventional formulation. Thus, obtained results disclosed that permeation and disposition of 5-FU and CBD into different layers of the skin FU-CBD NLCs gel could be more potential carrier than conventional gel. Furthermore, prepared formulation showed greater tumor remission, better survival rate, reduction in tumor number, area, and volume with improved biochemical profile. Thus, prepared gel could serve as a promising formulation approach for the skin cancer treatment.

Therapeutic potential of marine peptides in malignant melanoma

Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer. It is becoming more common globally and is increasingly resistant to treatment options. Despite extensive research into its pathophysiology, there are still no proven cures for metastatic melanoma. Unfortunately, current treatments are frequently ineffective and costly, and have several adverse effects. Natural substances have been extensively researched for their anti-MM capabilities. Chemoprevention and adjuvant therapy with natural products is an emerging strategy to prevent, cure or treat melanoma. Numerous prospective drugs are found in aquatic species, providing a plentiful supply of lead cytotoxic chemicals for cancer treatment. Anticancer peptides are less harmful to healthy cells and cure cancer through several different methods, such as altered cell viability, apoptosis, angiogenesis/metastasis suppression, microtubule balance disturbances and targeting lipid composition of the cancer cell membrane. This review addresses marine peptides as effective and safe treatments for MM and details their molecular mechanisms of action.

Harnessing function of EMT in hepatocellular carcinoma: From biological view to nanotechnological standpoint

Management of cancer metastasis has been associated with remarkable reduction in progression of cancer cells and improving survival rate of patients. Since 90% of mortality are due to cancer metastasis, its suppression can improve ability in cancer fighting. The EMT has been an underlying cause in increasing cancer migration and it is followed by mesenchymal transformation of epithelial cells. HCC is the predominant kind of liver tumor threatening life of many people around the world with poor prognosis. Increasing patient prognosis can be obtained via inhibiting tumor metastasis. HCC metastasis modulation by EMT and HCC therapy by nanoparticles are discussed here. First of all, EMT happens during progression and advanced stages of HCC and therefore, its inhibition can reduce tumor malignancy. Moreover, anti-cancer compounds including all-trans retinoic acid and plumbaging, among others, have been considered as inhibitors of EMT. The EMT association with chemoresistance has been evaluated. Moreover, ZEB1/2, TGF-β, Snail and Twist are EMT modulators in HCC and enhancing cancer invasion. Therefore, EMT mechanism and related molecular mechanisms in HCC are evaluated. The treatment of HCC has not been only emphasized on targeting molecular pathways with pharmacological compounds and since drugs have low bioavailability, their targeted delivery by nanoparticles promotes HCC elimination. Moreover, nanoparticle-mediated phototherapy impairs tumorigenesis in HCC by triggering cell death. Metastasis of HCC and even EMT mechanism can be suppressed by cargo-loaded nanoparticles.

Efficient cobalt hydroxide nanosheets for enhanced electrochemical sensing of Hg (II) ion

A sensitive electrochemical device was suggested via the modification of a simple graphite rod electrode (GRE) with cobalt hydroxide (Co(OH)₂) nanosheets. After closed circuit process on the modified electrode, the anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) technique was used for measuring of Hg(II). In optimal experimental conditions, the suggested assay depicted a linear response over a broad range in the range 0.25-30 μg L^-1, with the lowest detection limit of 0.07 μg L^-1. Besides good selectivity, the sensor also indicated excellent reproducibility with a relative standard deviation (RSD) value of 2.9%. Moreover, the Co(OH)₂-GRE showed satisfactory sensing performance in real water samples with appropriate recovery values (96.0-102.5%). Additionally, possible interfering cations were examined, but no significant interference was found. By taking some merits such high sensitivity, remarkable selectivity and good precision, this strategy is expected to provide an efficient protocol for the electrochemical measuring of toxic Hg(II) in environmental matrices.

A Modified Electrochemical Sensor Based on N,S-Doped Carbon Dots/Carbon Nanotube-Poly(Amidoamine) Dendrimer Hybrids for Imatinib Mesylate Determination

Imatinib mesylate, an anticancer drug, is prescribed to treat gastrointestinal stromal tumors and chronic myelogenous leukemia. A hybrid nanocomposite of N,S-doped carbon dots/carbon nanotube-poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (N,S-CDs/CNTD) was successfully synthesized and used as a significant modifier to design a new and highly selective electrochemical sensor for the determination of imatinib mesylate. A rigorous study with electrochemical techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry, was performed to elucidate the electrocatalytic properties of the as-prepared nanocomposite and the preparation procedure of the modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE). A higher oxidation peak current was generated for the imatinib mesylate on a N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE surface compared to the GCE and CNTD/GCE. The N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE showed a linear relationship between the concentration and oxidation peak current of the imatinib mesylate in 0.01-100 μM, with a detection limit of 3 nM. Finally, the imatinib mesylate's quantification in blood-serum samples was successfully performed. The N,S-CDs/CNTD/GCE's reproducibility and stability were indeed excellent.

The development of electrochemical DNA biosensor based on poly-l-methionine and bimetallic AuPt nanoparticles coating: Picomolar detection of Imatinib and Erlotinib

We report on the preparation of a new and simple electrochemical DNA biosensor based on DNA/AuPt/p-L-Met coating on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPE) and its use in the determination of the cancer therapy agents, Imatinib (IMA) and Erlotinib (ERL). Poly-l-methionine (p-L-Met), gold, and platinum nanoparticles (AuPt) were successfully coated by one-step electrodeposition onto the SPE from a solution containing L-Met, HAuCl_4, and H₂PtCl₆. The immobilization of DNA was achieved by drop-casting on the surface of the modified electrode. Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDX), and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) were used to investigate the morphology, the structure, and the electrochemical performance of the sensor. Experimental factors influencing the coating and DNA immobilization processes were optimized. The peak currents originating from guanine (G) and adenine (A) oxidation of ds-DNA were used as signals to quantify IMA and ERL in the concentration range 2.33-80 nM and 0.032-1.0 nM with the LODs of 0.18 nM and 0.009 nM, respectively. The biosensor developed was suitable for determining IMA and ERL in human serum and pharmaceutical samples.

The convergence of traditional and digital biomarkers through AI-assisted biosensing: A new era in translational diagnostics?

Advances in consumer electronics, alongside the fields of microfluidics and nanotechnology have brought to the fore low-cost wearable/portable smart devices. Although numerous smart devices that track digital biomarkers have been successfully translated from bench-to-bedside, only a few follow the same fate when it comes to track traditional biomarkers. Current practices still involve laboratory-based tests, followed by blood collection, conducted in a clinical setting as they require trained personnel and specialized equipment. In fact, real-time, passive/active and robust sensing of physiological and behavioural data from patients that can feed artificial intelligence (AI)-based models can significantly improve decision-making, diagnosis and treatment at the point-of-procedure, by circumventing conventional methods of sampling, and in person investigation by expert pathologists, who are scarce in developing countries. This review brings together conventional and digital biomarker sensing through portable and autonomous miniaturized devices. We first summarise the technological advances in each field vs the current clinical practices and we conclude by merging the two worlds of traditional and digital biomarkers through AI/ML technologies to improve patient diagnosis and treatment. The fundamental role, limitations and prospects of AI in realizing this potential and enhancing the existing technologies to facilitate the development and clinical translation of "point-of-care" (POC) diagnostics is finally showcased.

Synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes functionalized with platinum nanoparticles to sense breast cancer cells in 4T1 model to X-ray radiation

In recent years, various types of radiosensitizers have been developed to address the challenges of cancer radiotherapy. Here, platinum-functionalized oxygenated single-walled carbon nanotubes (O-SWCNTs-Pt) coated with folic acid (FA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) (O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA-FA) were synthesized, characterized, and used as radiosensitizers to improve the therapeutic efficacy of X-rays in a mouse model of breast cancer (4T1) in vitro. The nanosensitizer was characterized by different techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, X-ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet-visible (UV-visible), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry. The evaluation of cell viability with nanocarriers O-SWCNTs-BSA, O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA, Pt-BSA-FA, and O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA-FA is reported at the concentrations of 10, 30, and 90 μg/mL by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in the presence and absence of X-rays at 4 and 8 Gy. The results showed that administration of O-SWCNTs-BSA, O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA, Pt-BSA-FA, and O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA-FA + 8 Gy at a concentration of 90 μg/mL reduced survival by 75.31, 65.32, 67.35, and 60.35%, respectively. O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA-FA has a hydrodynamic size of 88.57 nm and a surface charge of -29 mV, which indicates special stability. Compared with O-SWCNTs-BSA, O-SWCNTs-Pt-BSA, and Pt-BSA-FA, it has very strong cell-killing activity in the 4T1 cell line. It is also noteworthy that SWCNTs can act as a controlled release and delivery system for PtNPs due to their unique properties and easy penetration into biological membranes. As a result, the  new nanosensitizer may play a role in cancer treatment in conjunction with radiotherapy technology. Graphical abstract.

The MIL100(Fe)/BaTi0.85Zr0.15O3 nanocomposite with the photocatalytic capability for study of tetracycline photodegradation kinetics

The visible light-active nanocomposite with the photocatalytic capability was facile one-pot solvothermal method successfully synthesized. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry and Derivative Thermogravimetry (TG-DTG), Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis (SEM-EDX), Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS), and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FT-IR) analysis were employed to characterize the synthetized BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O3, MIL-100(Fe), and the MIL-100(Fe)/BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O₃ samples. As a result of the Scherrer equations, the size of grains for MIL-100(Fe), BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O₃, and MIL-100(Fe)/BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O₃ was estimated to be 40.81, 12.00, and 22.70 nm, respectively. MIL-100(Fe), BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O₃, and MIL-100(Fe)/BaTi_0.85Zr_0.15O₃ samples showed bandgap values of 1.77, 3.02, and 2.56 determined from their absorption edge wavelengths. In the photodegraded solutions, chemical oxygen demand (COD) data and tetracycline (TC) absorbencies were used to obtain the rate constants of 0.032 min^-1 and 0.030 min^-1, respectively. This corresponds to t_1/2-values of 27.7 min and 21.7 min, respectively, for the degradation and mineralization of TC molecules during photodegradation process.

Modern Electrochemical Biosensing Based on Nucleic Acids and Carbon Nanomaterials

To meet the requirements of novel therapies, effective treatments should be supported by diagnostic tools characterized by appropriate analytical and working parameters. These are, in particular, fast and reliable responses that are proportional to analyte concentration, with low detection limits, high selectivity, cost-efficient construction, and portability, allowing for the development of point-of-care devices. Biosensors using nucleic acids as receptors has turned out to be an effective approach for meeting the abovementioned requirements. Careful design of the receptor layers will allow them to obtain DNA biosensors that are dedicated to almost any analyte, including ions, low and high molecular weight compounds, nucleic acids, proteins, and even whole cells. The impulse for the application of carbon nanomaterials in electrochemical DNA biosensors is rooted in the possibility to further influence their analytical parameters and adjust them to the chosen analysis. Such nanomaterials enable the lowering of the detection limit, the extension of the biosensor linear response, or the increase in selectivity. This is possible thanks to their high conductivity, large surface-to-area ratio, ease of chemical modification, and introduction of other nanomaterials, such as nanoparticles, into the carbon structures. This review discusses the recent advances on the design and application of carbon nanomaterials in electrochemical DNA biosensors that are dedicated especially to modern medical diagnostics.

Preparation of nanocellulose grafted molecularly imprinted polymer for selective adsorption Pb(II) and Hg(II)

Heavy metal pollution has become a major problem in environmental pollution. Ion imprinted polymers with specific identification and wide practicality have gradually become an important tool for wastewater treatment. In this work, ion-imprinted polymer-grafted modified nanocellulose was designed as an adsorbent for the serious hazard of Pb(II) and Hg(II) in wastewater. This work used medical cotton wool as raw material to prepare a nanocellulose suspension by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis. The high reactivity of carbonyl diimidazole (CDI) was utilized to react with acrylic acid (AA) to generate reactive intermediates, which then reacted with nanocellulose to form activated nanocellulose (AA-CDI-NC). Crown ether was used as functional monomers to synthesize Pb(II) ion-imprinted polymers and grafted onto the AA-CDI-NC surface (Pb(II)-MIP-NC). Meanwhile, Hg(II) ion-imprinted polymer was synthesized and grafted onto the AA-CDI-NC surface (Hg(II)-MIP-NC) using thymine as a functional monomer. The experimental results showed that Pb(II)-MIP-NC and Hg(II)-MIP-NC could effectively adsorb Pb(II) and Hg(II), respectively. Their adsorption behaviors for Pb(II) and Hg(II) were consistent with the secondary kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The adsorption capacities of Pb (II)-MIP-NC and Hg (II)-MIP-NC for Pb (II) and Hg (II) were 27.55 mg/g and 161.31, respectively.

Regulating the microenvironment with nanomaterials: Potential strategies to ameliorate COVID-19

COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has resulted in serious economic and health burdens. Current treatments remain inadequate to extinguish the epidemic, and efficient therapeutic approaches for COVID-19 are urgently being sought. Interestingly, accumulating evidence suggests that microenvironmental disorder plays an important role in the progression of COVID-19 in patients. In addition, recent advances in nanomaterial technologies provide promising opportunities for alleviating the altered homeostasis induced by a viral infection, providing new insight into COVID-19 treatment. Most literature reviews focus only on certain aspects of microenvironment alterations and fail to provide a comprehensive overview of the changes in homeostasis in COVID-19 patients. To fill this gap, this review systematically discusses alterations of homeostasis in COVID-19 patients and potential mechanisms. Next, advances in nanotechnology-based strategies for promoting homeostasis restoration are summarized. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects of using nanomaterials for COVID-19 management. This review provides a new strategy and insights into treating COVID-19 and other diseases associated with microenvironment disorders.

Bibliometrics Analysis of Research Progress of Electrochemical Detection of Tetracycline Antibiotics

Tetracycline is a broad-spectrum class of antibiotics. The use of excessive doses of tetracycline antibiotics can result in their residues in food, posing varying degrees of risk to human health. Therefore, the establishment of a rapid and sensitive field detection method for tetracycline residues is of great practical importance to improve the safety of food-derived animal foods. Electrochemical analysis techniques are widely used in the field of pollutant detection because of the simple detection principle, easy operation of the instrument, and low cost of analysis. In this review, we summarize the electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics by bibliometrics. Unlike the previously published reviews, this article reviews and analyzes the development of this topic. The contributions of different countries and different institutions were analyzed. Keyword analysis was used to explain the development of different research directions. The results of the analysis revealed that developments and innovations in materials science can enhance the performance of electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics. Among them, gold nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are the most used nanomaterials. Aptamer sensing strategies are the most favored methodologies in electrochemical detection of tetracycline antibiotics.

A Review on CNTs-Based Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors: Unique Properties and Potential Applications

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), are safe, biocompatible, bioactive, and biodegradable materials, and have sparked a lot of attention due to their unique characteristics in a variety of applications, including medical and dye industries, paper manufacturing and water purification. CNTs also have a strong film-forming potential, permitting them to be widely employed in constructing sensors and biosensors. This review concentrates on the application of CNT-based nanocomposites in the production of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. It emphasizes the synthesis and optimization of CNT-based sensors for a range of applications and outlines the benefits of using CNTs for biomolecule immobilization. In addition, the use of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP)-CNTs in the production of electrochemical sensors is also discussed. The challenges faced by the current CNTs-based sensors, along with some the future perspectives and their future opportunities, are also briefly explained in this paper.

Powerful and fast nanostructure electrochemical sensor for monitoring of carbidopa catechol-based drug in water and biological fluids

Herein, to monitor the concentration of carbidopa in an aqueous solution, an analytical approach based on electrode surface modification by Pt/SWCNTs as a sensor has been proposed. Pt/SWCNTs was synthesized by polyol strategy and characterized by the TEM method. Results confirmed spherical Pt nanoparticles with a diameter of about 10 nm decorated at the surface of SWCNTs with good distribution. The carbon paste electrode modified (CPEM) with Pt/SWCNTs was fabricated by mixing 12% of nanocomposite as an optimum condition with graphite powder in the presence of paraffin oil as a binder. Carbidopa's oxidation signal was enhanced by about 2.73 times when using the CPEM/Pt/SWCNTs, and its oxidation potential was decreased by about 110 mV. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated a linear dynamic range of 1.0 nM-120 M with a detection limit of 0.5 nM at pH = 7.0 as the ideal condition for monitoring carbidopa. Therefore, carbidopa in water and dextrose saline can be detected using CPEM/Pt/SWCNTs with an acceptable recovery range.

Design and fabrication of new anticancer sensor for monitoring of daunorubicin using 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolinium chloride and tin oxide/nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposite electrochemical sensor

In this study, a novel tin oxide/nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dot nanocomposite (SnO₂-NDGQD) and 1-methyl-3-octylimidazolinium chloride (1M3OICl) ionic liquid amplified carbon paste electrode (CPE) was fabricated as an efficient and fast-response sensor to determine daunorubicin, an anticancer drug. The electrochemical characteristics of daunorubicin at the surface of the 1M3OICl/SnO₂-NDGQD/CPE was explored via various voltammetric methods. The high-resolution transmission electron microscope (HR-TEM) images were recorded to examine the morphological structure of the as-synthesized nanocomposites. The 1M3OICl/SnO₂-NDGQD/CPE offered a wide linear concentration of 0.001-280.0 μM with a low detection limit of 0.40 nM at the optimized experimental conditions using square wave voltammetric (SWV) method. In a nutshell, the developed electrode illustrated outstanding selectivity in the presence of interfering agents and long-term stability. The1M3OICl/SnO₂-NDGQD/CPE was used as new and powerful analytical tool for determination of daunorubicin in real samples with recovery range 98.75%-104.8%.

Chemically modified covalent organic frameworks for a healthy and sustainable environment: First-principles study

Pure water is a key element for a sustainable and healthy environment of human inhabitation. Since major sources of water contamination are industrially generated heavy metal cations there is great demand for efficient methods of their treatment. Here, using density functional theory, we investigate the covalent organic framework's electronic and optical properties and their interaction with the most dangerous heavy metal pollutants, namely Hg⁺², Pb^+2, and Cd⁺². We consider biphenyl boroxine covalent organic frameworks before and after chemical modification with CN, COOH, NH₂, and NO₂ groups. In addition to the molecular geometries, such parameters as the dipole moment, chemical potential, electronegativity, chemical hardness, and binding energy are calculated. It is found that CN, COOH, and NO₂ functional groups are favorable for intermolecular bonding with harmful transition metals. The functionalization with the mentioned groups reduces the band gap of the pristine covalent organic frameworks and increases their reactivity. As a result, strong complexes with Cd⁺², Hg⁺², and Pb⁺² can form, which, as follows from our calculations, can be detected by the red shift in their optical absorption spectra.

A review of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy for bioanalytical sensors

Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful technique for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. This review uses a systematic approach to examine how electrodes are tailored for use in EIS-based applications, describing the chemistries involved in sensor design, and discusses trends in the use of bio-based and non-bio-based electrodes. The review finds that immunosensors are the most prevalent sensor strategy that employs EIS as a quantification technique for target species. The review also finds that bio-based electrodes, though capable of detecting small molecules, are most applicable for the detection of complex molecules. Non-bio-based sensors are more often employed for simpler molecules and less often have applications for complex systems. We surmise that EIS has advanced in terms of electrode designs since our last review on the subject, although there are still inconsistencies in terms of equivalent circuit modelling for some sensor types. Removal of ambiguity from equivalent circuit models may help advance EIS as a choice detection method, allowing for lower limits of detection than traditional electrochemical methods such as voltammetry or amperometry.

Gold nanoparticle decorated dithiocarbamate modified natural boehmite as a catalyst for the synthesis of biologically essential propargylamines

Here, we prepare an Au NP decorated dithiocarbamate functionalized boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)@C-NHCS2H·AuNPs). This stepwise synthetic method gives an efficient, cost-effective, and green heterogenous Au-based nanocatalyst for the A3-coupling preparation of the biologically essential propargylamines. Different characterization methods, including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX spectra, and elemental SEM-mapping, were employed to investigate the structure of the manufactured γ-AlO(OH)@C-NHCS2H·AuNPs. Then we used the prepared composite as a heterogeneous gold-based nanocatalyst for the one-pot A3-coupling preparation of propargyl amines by reacting a variety of aldehydes, amines, and phenylacetylene which exhibited promising results.

A scientometric study on application of electrochemical sensors for detection of pesticide using graphene-based electrode modifiers

Pesticide testing is an important topic in environmental protection and food safety. The development of green, accurate and reliable pesticide residue detection methods is an important technical support for implementing of agricultural quality supervision. Electrochemical sensors are a very promising analytical method for pesticide detection due to their high sensitivity, speed, low cost and portability. Performance enhancement of electrochemical sensors is often accompanied by research advances in materials science. Among them, carbon material is a very important electrode material for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. The discovery of graphene makes it the most promising candidate among carbon materials for sensor performance enhancement. The topic of this review is the use of graphene-modified electrochemical sensors for pesticide detection in the last decade. Traditional literature summaries and bibliometric analyses were used for an in-depth analysis of this topic. In addition to the introduction of different sensor types and performance comparisons, this review also parses the authors' country, keywords and publication frequency. The related research experienced rapid growth several years ago and has now reached a relatively stable stage. We also discuss the perspectives on this topic.

Graphdiyne applications in sensors: A bibliometric analysis and literature review

Graphdiyne is a two-dimensional carbon nanomaterial synthesized artificially in 2010. Its outstanding performance is considered to have great potential in different fields. This article summarizes the work of graphdiyne in the sensing field by literature summary and bibliometrics analysis. The development of graphdiyne in the field of sensing has gone through a process from theoretical calculation to experimental verification. Especially in the last three years, there has been very rapid development. The theoretical calculations suggest that graphdiyne is an excellent gas sensing material, but there is little experimental evidence in this direction. On the contrary, graphdiyne has been widely reported in the field of electrochemical sensing. At the same time, graphdiyne can also be used as a molecular switch for DNA sequencing. Fluorescent sensors based on graphdiyne have also been reported. In general, the potential of graphdiyne in sensing still needs to be explored. Current research results do not show that graphdiyne has irreplaceable advantages in sensing. The bibliometric analysis used in this review also provides cooperative network analysis and co-citation analysis on this topic. This provides a reference for the audience wishing to undertake research on the topic. In addition, according to the analysis, we also listed the direction that which this field deserves attention in the future.

A bibliometric analysis of graphene in acetaminophen detection: Current status, development, and future directions

Acetaminophen is a widely used analgesic throughout the world. Detection of acetaminophen has particular value in pharmacy and clinics. Electrochemical sensors assembled with advanced materials are an effective method for the rapid detection of acetaminophen. Graphene-based carbon nanomaterials have been extensively investigated for potential analytical applications in the last decade. In this article, we selected papers containing both graphene and acetaminophen. Bibliometrics was used to analyze the relationships and trends among these papers. The results show that the topic has grown at a high rate since 2009. Among them, the detection of acetaminophen by an electrochemical sensor based on graphene is the most important direction. Graphene has moved from being a primary sensing material to a substrate for immobilization of other active ingredients. In addition, the degradation of acetaminophen using graphene-modified electrodes is also an important direction. We analyzed the research history and current status of this topic through bibliometrics. Authors, institutions, countries, and key literature were discussed. We also proposed perspectives for this topic.

Electrochemical Determination of Morin in Natural Food Using a Chitosan-Graphene Glassy Carbon Modified Electrode

This report presents a new application for the chitosan-graphene glassy carbon electrode (Ch-G/GCE) system in the determination of the hydroxyflavonoid morin (MR), one of the flavonoids with the highest favorable activity for people, due to its natural properties by square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The anodic peak current for MR was observed at 0.50 V with an increase of 73% compared with the glassy carbon electrode unmodified. The surface areas of Ch-G/GCE, Ch/GCE and GCE evaluated by cyclic voltammetry were 0.140, 0.053 and 0.011 cm², respectively. Additionally, an increase greater than 100% compared to the electrode without modification was observed. The detection limit was 0.30 µmol/L for MR, and the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.8% (n = 6). Possible interferences as quercetin, rutin, and applications in real samples were also evaluated with very acceptable results.

Electrochemical DNA sensors for drug determination

In this review, recent achievements in the development of the DNA biosensors developed for the drug determination have been presented with particular emphasis to the main principles of their assembling and signal measurement approaches. The design of the DNA sensors is considered with characterization of auxiliary components and their necessity for the biosensor operation. Carbon nanomaterials, metals and their complexes as well as electropolymerized polymers are briefly described in the assembly of DNA sensors. The performance of the DNA sensors is summarized within 2017-2022 for various drugs and factors influencing the sensitivity and selectivity of the response are discussed. Special attention is paid to the mechanism of the signal generation and possible drawbacks in the analysis of real samples.

Human hair rich in pyridinic nitrogen-base DNA biosensor for direct electrochemical monitoring of palbociclib-DNA interaction

Carbon material derived from the waste-based biomass human hair (H), which is naturally rich in pyridinic nitrogen, provides a significant benefit in biosensor applications with its dominant conductivity character. The carbon material was synthesized from human hair waste by the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) method, which is a promising green synthesis. A morphological characterization of the carbon materials was performed. In this study, H and amine-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (NH₂-MWCNT) were combined for the first time as a modifier, which enhanced the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface area for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) biosensor studies. Palbociclib (PLB) is clinically used in the treatment of breast cancer. The novel electrochemical nanobiosensor was used to investigate the dsDNA-PLB interaction to evaluate the possibility that PLB causes conformational changes in DNA structure and/or oxidative damage. The interaction was conducted based on the voltammetric signals of deoxyguanosine (dGuo) and deoxyadenosine (dAdo) by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) on a bare and H + NH₂-MWCNT modified GCE. The proposed analytical method was applied to a pharmaceutical dosage form with a satisfactory recovery of 98.25 %. The nanobiosensor was tested in the presence of some interfering agents. The binding mechanism of dsDNA-PLB was also evaluated by spectroscopic and theoretical calculations.

Cyclic and Linear Sweep Voltammetric Studies of a Modified Carbon Paste Electrode with Nickel Oxide Nanoparticles toward Tamoxifen: Effects of Surface Modification on Electrode Response Kinetics

Due to the serious adverse futures of some anticancer drugs, the determination of trace amounts of these drugs by simple analytical techniques is of great interest. In this regard, knowing about the mechanism of the analyte with the sensing material plays an important role. Nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) modified by a carbon paste electrode (NiO-CPE) showed an irreversible cyclic voltammetric (CV) behavior in the NaOH (pH 13) supporting electrolyte based on the peak separation of 311 mV. Its peak current was decreased by adding tamoxifen (TAM), confirming that TAM molecules can consume NiO before participating in the electrode reaction. For this goal, TAM can be oxidized or reduced, and the corresponding mechanisms are schematically illustrated in the text. This study focused on the kinetic aspects of the process. Based on the CV results, a surface coverage (Γ) value of 2.72 × 10^-5 mol NiO per cm² was obtained with charge transfer coefficients α_a and α_c of 0.317 and 0.563, respectively. α_a and α_c values were changed to 0.08 and 0.72 in the presence of TAM. Further, the rate constant (k _s) value was 0.021 ± 0.01 s^-1 in the presence of TAM. In linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), an α value of about 0.636 ± 0.023 and an exchange rate constant (k _o) value of about 0.097 ± 0.031 s^-1 were obtained in the absence of TAM, which changed to 0.62 ± 0.081 and 0.089 ± 0.021 s^-1 in the presence of TAM, respectively. Despite more published papers, when the TAM analyte was added to the NaOH supporting electrolyte, both anodic and cathodic peak currents of the modified NiO-CPE decreased. We suggested some reasons for this decreased peak current, and four mechanisms were illustrated for the electrode response in the presence of TAM.

Application of carbon nanotubes in sensing/monitoring of pancreas and liver cancer

Liver and pancreatic tumors are among the third leading causes of cancer-associated death worldwide. In addition to poor prognosis, both cancer types are diagnosed at advanced and metastatic stages without typical prior symptoms. Unfortunately, the existing theranostic approaches are inefficient in cancer diagnosis and treatment. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted increasing attention in this context due to their distinct properties, including variable functionalization capability, biocompatibility, and excellent thermodynamic and optical features. As a consequence, they are now regarded as one of the most promising materials for this application. The current review aims to summarize and discuss the role of CNT in pancreatic and liver cancer theranostics. Accordingly, the breakthroughs achieved so far are classified based on the cancer type and analyzed in detail. The most feasible tactics utilizing CNT-based solutions for both cancer diagnosis and treatment are presented from the biomedical point of view. Finally, a future outlook is provided, which anticipates how the R&D community can build on the already developed methodologies and the subsequent biological responses of the pancreatic and liver cancer cells to the directed procedures.

Facile synthesis of green and efficient magnetic nanocomposites of carrageenan/copper for the reduction of nitrophenol derivatives

A green and facile method for preparation of Kappa-Carrageenan or Iota-Carrageenan grafted N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide/Fe₃O₄/Cu nanoparticles (κC-g-MBA/MNPs/Cu and ιC-g-MBA/MNPs/Cu) catalysts was developed to place copper on a magnetic carrageenan surface. The structure and morphology of the prepared catalysts were identified using FT-IR, XRD, BET, VSM, TGA, EDX, mapping, FE-SEM, TEM, and ICP-OES analyses. The catalytic activity of the catalysts was investigated to reduce 4-nitrophenol, 2-nitrophenol, 3-nitroaniline, and 4-nitroaniline compounds using the UV-Vis spectrum. To reduce 4-nitrophenol using κC-g-MBA/MNPs/Cu and ιC-g-MBA/MNPs/Cu, the rate constants (K_app) obtained were 0.37 and 0.25 min^-1, and the activity factors (k') were 134 and 193 s^-1 g^-1, respectively. The catalysts had a good performance in reducing the nitrophenol compounds and due to the magnetic properties of the catalysts, they could easily be separated and used multiple times.

Electrochemistry as a Powerful Tool for Investigations of Antineoplastic Agents: A Comprehensive Review

Cancer is most frequently treated with antineoplastic agents (ANAs) that are hazardous to patients undergoing chemotherapy and the healthcare workers who handle ANAs in the course of their duties. All aspects related to hazardous oncological drugs illustrate that the monitoring of ANAs is essential to minimize the risks associated with these drugs. Among all analytical techniques used to test ANAs, electrochemistry holds an important position. This review, for the first time, comprehensively describes the progress done in electrochemistry of ANAs by means of a variety of bare or modified (bio)sensors over the last four decades (in the period of 1982-2021). Attention is paid not only to the development of electrochemical sensing protocols of ANAs in various biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical matrices but also to achievements of electrochemical techniques in the examination of the interactions of ANAs with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), carcinogenic cells, biomimetic membranes, peptides, and enzymes. Other aspects, including the enantiopurity studies, differentiation between single-stranded and double-stranded DNA without using any label or tag, studies on ANAs degradation, and their pharmacokinetics, by means of electrochemical techniques are also commented. Finally, concluding remarks that underline the existence of a significant niche for the basic electrochemical research that should be filled in the future are presented.

99mTc- Anionic dendrimer targeted vascular endothelial growth factor as a novel nano-radiotracer for in-vivo breast cancer imaging

Since breast cancer is the commonly cause of death among women around the world, diagnosis at the early stages is significantly important to prevent the metastasis of the cancer. Among the various growth factors that are involved in angiogenesis, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is believed to be the most important factor. Overexpressed VEGF receptor on tumors surface, is particularly interesting for cancer cells targeting purposes. In this study, citric acid dendrimer conjugated with VEGF antagonist peptide was synthesized. The obtained product was confirmed by FT-IR, TEM, DLS, and EDS. In vitro cytotoxicity assay showed no toxicity on normal cells and indicated the notably dose-dependence toxicity on cancer cells. Box-Behnken software as a computational method was used to determine the optimum amount of radiolabeling parameters. Optimized parameters for reducing agent, dendrimer-anti-VEGF, and time were 1.4 mg, 17.5 mg, and about 30 min respectively. Radiochemical purity of radio-labeled conjugated dendrimer was determined about 90 percent. SPECT imaging was done to observe the in vivo accumulation of dendrimer-anti-VEGF in the tumor site. Images showed high accumulation of radio-tracer in the tumor region. All in all, obtained results confirmed our hypothesis that the dendrimer-anti-VEGF can be a good radio-tracer for diagnosis of cancer.

Relationship between graphene and pedosphere: A scientometric analysis

The mass production and application of graphene have gradually expanded from academic research to industrial applications, which will inevitably lead to graphene entering the soil actively and passively. Therefore, the relationship between graphene and the pedosphere has attracted a lot of attention in the last decade. The most important question is whether graphene will harm soil health. Fortunately, the evidence is that graphene can alter soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities to some extent, but not dramatically. On this basis, the role of graphene in soil has been investigated in all directions. This review summarizes the literature on the relationship between graphene and soils. Topics include remediation and sensing of soil using graphene materials, the effects of graphene on soil, and the effects of graphene in soil on plant growth. At the same time, this review also uses bibliometrics to review the history of the topic. The number of papers published each year, participating countries, participating institutions and important articles were analyzed in detail. Finally, based on the published literature, we described the future perspectives of graphene and the pedosphere.
