Coexistence of Magnetic-Optic-Electric Triple Switching and Thermal Energy Storage in a Multifunctional Plastic Crystal of Trimethylchloromethyl Ammonium Tetrachloroferrate(III)

The past 10 years of molecular ferroelectrics: structures, design, and properties

Ferroelectricity, which has diverse important applications such as memory elements, capacitors, and sensors, was first discovered in a molecular compound, Rochelle salt, in 1920 by Valasek. Owing to their superiorities of lightweight, biocompatibility, structural tunability, mechanical flexibility, etc., the past decade has witnessed the renaissance of molecular ferroelectrics as promising complementary materials to commercial inorganic ferroelectrics. Thus, on the 100th anniversary of ferroelectricity, it is an opportune time to look into the future, specifically into how to push the boundaries of material design in molecular ferroelectric systems and finally overcome the hurdles to their commercialization. Herein, we present a comprehensive and accessible review of the appealing development of molecular ferroelectrics over the past 10 years, with an emphasis on their structural diversity, chemical design, exceptional properties, and potential applications. We believe that it will inspire intense, combined research efforts to enrich the family of high-performance molecular ferroelectrics and attract widespread interest from physicists and chemists to better understand the structure-function relationships governing improved applied functional device engineering.

Molecular ferroelectric with low-magnetic-field magnetoelectricity at room temperature

Magnetoelectric materials, which encompass coupled magnetic and electric polarizabilities within a single phase, hold great promises for magnetic controlled electronic components or electric-field controlled spintronics. However, the realization of ideal magnetoelectric materials remains tough due to the inborn competion between ferroelectricity and magnetism in both levels of symmetry and electronic structure. Herein, we introduce a methodology for constructing single phase paramagnetic ferroelectric molecule [TMCM][FeCl4], which shows low-magnetic-field magnetoelectricity at room temperature. By applying a low magnetic field (≤1 kOe), the halogen Cl‧‧‧Cl distance and the volume of [FeCl4]- anions could be manipulated. This structural change causes a characteristic magnetostriction hysteresis, resulting in a substantial deformation of ~10-4 along the a-axis under an in-plane magnetic field of 2 kOe. The magnetostrictive effect is further qualitatively simulated by density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, this mechanical deformation significantly dampens the ferroelectric polarization by directly influencing the overall dipole configuration. As a result, it induces a remarkable α31 component (~89 mV Oe-1 cm-1) of the magnetoelectric tensor. And the magnetoelectric coupling, characterized by the change of polarization, reaches ~12% under 40 kOe magnetic field. Our results exemplify a design methodology that enables the creation of room-temperature magnetoelectrics by leveraging the potent effects of magnetostriction.

Synergetic Responses of Multiple Functions Induced by Phase Transition in Molecular Materials

Materials that integrate magnetism, electricity and luminescence can not only improve the operational efficiency of devices, but also potentially generate new functions through their coupling. Therefore, multifunctional synergistic effects have broad application prospects in fields such as optoelectronic devices, information storage and processing, and quantum computing. However, in the research field of molecular materials, there are few reports on the synergistic multifunctional properties. The main reason is that there is insufficient awareness of how to obtain such material. In this brief review, we summarized the molecular materials with this characteristic. The structural phase transition of substances will cause changes in their physical properties, as the electronic configurations of the active unit in different structural phases are different. Therefore, we will classify and describe the multifunctional synergistic complexes based on the structural factors that cause the first-order phase transition of the complexes. This enables us to quickly screen complexes with synergistic responses to these properties through structural phase transitions, providing ideas for studying the synergistic response of physical properties in molecular materials.

Colossal Barocaloric Effect of Binary Fatty Acid Methyl Esters under Low Pressures near Room Temperature

Refrigeration technology based on the caloric effect is one of the more environmentally friendly alternatives to gas compression refrigeration. The barocaloric effect utilizes pressure to induce phase transition and results in a large entropy change. In this work, a colossal barocaloric effect in the liquid-solid transition (L-S-T) of binary fatty acid methyl esters (BFAMEs) was discovered. At 295 K, an isothermal entropy change as high as 591 J kg-1 K-1 and a reversible entropy change of 356 J kg-1 K-1 at a hydrostatic pressure of 80 MPa were obtained by mixing methyl palmitate and methyl stearate with a specific ratio to synthesize a BFAME. The value of the isothermal entropy change of the BFAME is comparable to that of a commercial gas compression refrigerant, R134a. This work will provide a new L-S-T candidate material to replace commercial refrigerants for the potential application of caloric effect refrigeration technology.

Temperature-Tuned Variable Confined Space for Modulating Dipolar Polarization of a Disc-Shaped Ammonium Ion

Free accessible confined space and loose interaction are crucial for most solid-state ionic motions. Here, by using a near-spherical anion and a disc-shaped ammonium as two distinct but rigid building blocks, we report a new ionic crystal, (HMIm)3[La(NO3)6] (HMIm = 1-methyl-1H-imidazol-3-ium), in which the different confined spaces of three (HMIm)+ ions are fine-tuned over a broad temperature range. This effect can be utilized to modulate the dipolar polarization across a wide temperature/frequency range. Additionally, small-scale substitution of (HMIm)+ by its isomer of almost identical shape/size affords molecular solid solutions, which can further tune the dipolar polarization by varying the doping ratio. It is revealed that the differences in dipole moment and hydrogen bond rather than that of shape/size lead to a distorted crystalline environment for these solid solutions. Overall, we provide an exceptional model for understanding and regulating the dipole motion of polar aromatic molecules/ions in a crystalline environment.

Halogen Engineering To Realize Regulable Multipolar Axes, Nonlinear Optical Response, and Piezoelectricity in Plastic Ferroelectrics

Compared with uniaxial molecular ferroelectrics, multiaxial ferroelectrics have better application prospects because they are no longer subject to the single-crystal form and have been pursued in recent years. Halogen engineering refers to the adjustment of halogens in materials at the atomic level, which can not only explore multiaxial ferroelectrics but also help to improve piezoelectrics, recently. In this work, we successfully synthesized and characterized three multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics through the precise molecular design from I to Cl, confirming the increase of the number of polar axes of ferroelectrics from 3 to 6, the increase of second-harmonic generation density from 2.1 times to nearly 6 times of monopotassium phosphate, and the increase of piezoelectric coefficient by 140%. This systematic work has proved that halogen engineering can not only enrich the family of multiaxial plastic ferroelectrics but also promote the further development of nonlinear optical and piezoelectric materials.

A porous cobalt(II)-organic framework exhibiting high room temperature proton conductivity and field-induced slow magnetic relaxation

A two-dimensional (2D) cobalt(II) metal-organic framework (MOF) constructed by a ditopic organic ligand, formulated as {[Co(Hbic)(H₂O)]·4H₂O}_n (1) (H₂bic = 1H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid), was hydrothermally synthesized and structurally characterized. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions, as coordination nodes, are bridged to form 2D honeycomb networks, which are further organized into a 3D supramolecular porous framework through multiple hydrogen bonds and interlayer π-π interactions. Dynamic crystallography experiments reveal the anisotropic thermal expansion behavior of the lattice, suggesting a flexible hydrogen-bonded 3D framework. Interestingly, hydrogen-bonded (H₂O)₄ tetramers were found to be located in porous channels, yielding 1D proton transport pathways. As a result, the compound exhibited a high room-temperature proton conductivity of 1.6 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 under a relative humidity of 95% through a Grotthuss mechanism. Magnetic investigations combined with theoretical calculations reveal giant easy-plane magnetic anisotropy of the distorted octahedral Co²⁺ ions with the experimental and computed D values being 87.1 and 109.3 cm^-1, respectively. In addition, the compound exhibits field-induced slow magnetic relaxation behavior at low temperatures with an effective energy barrier of U_eff = 45.2 cm^-1. Thus, the observed electrical and magnetic properties indicate a rare proton conducting SIM-MOF. The foregoing results provide a unique bifunctional cobalt(II) framework material and suggest a promising way to achieve magnetic and electrical properties using a supramolecular framework platform.

Ferroelectric Ionic Molecular Crystals with Significant Plasticity and a Low Melting Point: High Performance in Hot-Pressed Polycrystalline Plates and Melt-Grown Crystalline Sheets

Among ferroelectric crystals based on small molecules, plastic/ferroelectric crystals are currently receiving particular attention because they can be used as bulk polycrystals. Herein, we show that an ionic molecular ferroelectric crystal, guanidinium tetrafluoroborate, exhibits significant malleability and multiaxial ferroelectricity despite the absence of a plastic crystal phase. Powder samples of this crystal can be processed into transparent bulk crystalline plates either by press-forming or by melt-growing. The plates show high ferroelectric performance and related properties, demonstrating the largest hitherto reported spontaneous polarization for bulk polycrystals of small-molecule-based ferroelectrics. Owing to the ready availability of large-scale materials and processability into various bulk crystalline forms, this ferroelectric crystal represents a highly promising functional material that will boost research on diverse applications as bulk crystals.

Emerging Solid-to-Solid Phase-Change Materials for Thermal-Energy Harvesting, Storage, and Utilization

Phase-change materials (PCMs) offer tremendous potential to store thermal energy during reversible phase transitions for state-of-the-art applications. The practicality of these materials is adversely restricted by volume expansion, phase segregation, and leakage problems associated with conventional solid-liquid PCMs. Solid-solid PCMs, as promising alternatives to solid-liquid PCMs, are gaining much attention toward practical thermal-energy storage (TES) owing to their inimitable advantages such as solid-state processing, negligible volume change during phase transition, no contamination, and long cyclic life. Herein, the aim is to provide a holistic analysis of solid-solid PCMs suitable for thermal-energy harvesting, storage, and utilization. The developing strategies of solid-solid PCMs are presented and then the structure-property relationship is discussed, followed by potential applications. Finally, an outlook discussion with momentous challenges and future directions is presented. Hopefully, this review will provide a guideline to the scientific community to develop high-performance solid-solid PCMs for advanced TES applications.

Insights into the Molecular Dynamics of Quasi-Spherical (Chloromethyl)triethylammonium Confined in a Weakly Bound Ionic Cocrystal

Here, we report a weakly bound ionic cocrystal, (Et₃NCH₂Cl)₂[ZnCl₄], which undergoes a reversible structural phase transition owing to the switched molecular dynamics of the quasi-spherical (Et₃NCH₂Cl)⁺ cation from static to dynamic. Interestingly, a unique rolling and moving mechanism is uncovered for such a cation in the high-temperature phase, where its two methylene groups exhibit different kinetic energy barriers. This study provides a meaningful insight into the solid-state molecular dynamics of large-size quasi-spherical molecules that contain both a rigid core and flexible shell.

Inorganic-Organic Hybrid Molecular Materials: From Multiferroic to Magnetoelectric

Inorganic-organic hybrid molecular multiferroic and magnetoelectric materials, similar to multiferroic oxide compounds, have recently attracted increasing attention because they exhibit diverse architectures, a flexible framework, fascinating physics, and potential magnetoelectric functionalities in novel multifunctional devices such as energy transformation devices, sensors, and information storage systems. Herein, the classification of multiferroicity and magnetoelectricity is briefly outlined and then the recent advances in the multiferroicity and magnetoelectricity of inorganic-organic hybrid molecular materials, particularly magnetoelectricity and the relevant magnetoelectric mechanisms and their categories are summarized. In addition, a personal perspective and an outlook are provided.

An Exceptional Thermally Induced Four-State Nonlinear Optical Switch Arising from Stepwise Molecular Dynamic Changes in a New Hybrid Salt

Switching materials in channels of nonlinear optics (NLOs) are of particular interest in NLO material science. Numerous crystalline NLO switches based on structural phase transition have emerged, but most of them reveal a single-step switch between two different second-harmonic-generation (SHG) states, and only very rare cases involve three or more SHG states. Herein, we report a new organic-inorganic hybrid salt, (Me₃ NNH₂ )₂ [CdI₄ ], which is an unprecedented case of a reversible three-step NLO switch between SHG-silent, -medium, -low, and -high states, with high contrasts of 25.5/4.3/9.2 in a temperature range of 213-303 K. By using the combined techniques of variable-temperature X-ray single-crystal structural analyses, dielectric constants, solid-state ¹³ C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Hirshfeld surface analyses, we disclose that this four-state switchable SHG behavior is highly associated with the stepwise-changed molecular dynamics of the polar organic cations. This finding demonstrates well the complexity of molecular dynamics in simple hybrid salts and their potential in designing new advanced multistep switching materials.

Speciation of Copper(II)-Betaine Complexes as Starting Point for Electrochemical Copper Deposition from Ionic Liquids

The application of ionic liquids for the dissolution of metal oxides is a promising field for the development of more energy- and resource-efficient metallurgical processes. Using such solutions for the production of valuable chemicals or electrochemical metal deposition requires a detailed understanding of the chemical system and the factors influencing it. In the present work, several compounds are reported that crystallize after the dissolution of copper(II) oxide in the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ]. Dependent on the initial amount of chloride, the reaction temperature and the purity of the reagent, copper crystallizes in complexes with varying coordination geometries and ligands. Subsequently, the influence of these different complex species on electrochemical properties is shown. For the first time, copper is deposited from the ionic liquid [Hbet][NTf2 ], giving promising opportunities for more resource-efficient copper plating. The copper coatings were analyzed by SEM and EDX measurements. Furthermore, a mechanism for the decomposition of [Hbet][NTf2 ] in the presence of chloride is suggested and supported by experimental evidence.

A polar oxyhalogen-vanadate compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 with optical and two-staged dielectric switch behavior

Polar organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been applied in ferroelectricity, as well as in devices based on nonlinear optical and piezoelectricity properties. Here, we used a rectangular pyramid structure of [VOCl4]2- to construct a polar compound (C5NH13Cl)2VOCl4 (1). Compound 1 crystallized in the monoclinic P21 space group. Coexistence of nonlinear optical switching behavior (space-group change from P21 to P21/n) and two-staged thermosensitive dielectric switching properties could be achieved under the stimulus of temperature. Our findings provide an effective approach for construction of polar materials.

Thermo- and light-triggered reversible interconversion of dysprosium-anthracene complexes and their responsive optical, magnetic and dielectric properties

Artificial smart materials with switchable multifunctionality are of immense interest owing to their wide application in sensors, displays and memory devices. Lanthanide complexes are promising multifunctional materials integrating optical and magnetic characteristics. However, synergistic manipulation of different physical properties in lanthanide systems is still challenging. Herein we designed and synthesized a mononuclear complex [DyIII(SCN)3(depma)2(4-hpy)2] (1), which incorporates 9-diethylphosphonomethylanthracene (depma) as a photo-active component and 4-hydroxypyridine (4-hpy) as a polar component. This compound shows several unusual features: (a) reversible thermo-responsive phase transition associated with the order-disorder transition of 4-hpy and SCN-, which leads to thermochromic behavior and dielectric anomaly; (b) reversible photo-induced dimerization of anthracene groups, which leads to synergistic switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties. To our knowledge, compound 1 is the first example of lanthanide complexes that show stimuli-triggered synergistic and reversible switching of luminescence, magnetic and dielectric properties.

A Promising Phase Change Material with Record High Ionic Conductivity over a Wide Temperature Range of a Plastic Crystal Phase and Magnetic Thermal Memory Effect

The emerging organic ion plastic crystals (OIPCs) are the most promising candidates used as solid-state electrolytes in a range of ionic devices. To endow an OIPC with additional functionality may create a new type of material for multifunctional devices. Herein, we present an ion plastic crystal, [EMIm][Ni(mnt)₂] (1; [EMIm]⁺ = 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium and mnt^2- = maleonitriledithiolate), and its crystal consists of twin dimeric chains of [Ni(mnt)₂]^- anions, embraced by [EMIm]⁺ cations. A crystal-to-plastic crystal transformation with a large latent heat that occurred at ∼367/337 K on heating/cooling is confirmed by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique. The plastic crystal phase in 1, characterized by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and optical microscopy images, spans a broad temperature range with ΔT ∼123/153 K on heating/cooling (DSC measurement), and the wide ΔT is relevant to an extra stable anion chain owing to the strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions protecting the chain from collapse in the plastic crystal state. 1 is a single-component ion plastic crystal with a record high ion conductivity, 0.21 S·cm^-1, at 453 K. The crystal-to-plastic crystal transformation in 1 is coupled to a bistable magnetic transition to give a multi-in-one multifunctional material. This study provides a creative thought for the design of OIPCs with striking thermal, electrical, and magnetic multifunctionality.

Magnetoelectric Coupling Springing Up in Molecular Ferroelectric: [N(C2H5)3CH3][FeCl4]

A molecule-based ferroelectric triethylmethylammonium tetrachloroferrate(III) ([N(C₂H₅)₃CH₃][FeCl₄]) powder was designed as a multifunctional material exhibiting excellent multiple bistability. Prepared by the slow evaporation method at room temperature, the compound crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric assembly of hexagonal symmetry (P6₃mc space group) which undergoes a reversible temperature-triggered phase transition pinpointed at 363 K to the centrosymmetric packing within the P6₃/mmc space group. Aside from the inseparable role of the symmetry-breaking process smoothly unveiled from the X-ray powder diffraction data, a striking change in the dielectric permittivity observed during the paraelectric-to-ferroelectric phase transition directly discloses the bistable dielectric behavior-an exceptionally high increase in the dielectric permittivity of about 360% at 100 kHz across the heating and cooling cycles is direct proof showing the highly desirable stimuli-responsive electric ordering in this improper ferroelectric architecture. Due to the magnetically modulated physical properties resulting in the coupling of magnetic and electric orderings, the flexible assembly of [N(C₂H₅)₃CH₃][FeCl₄] could be used to boost the design and development of novel magnetoelectric devices.

Bistable molecular materials with dynamic structures

In this Feature Article, we introduce how to manipulate the motion of electrons or molecules by external stimuli, to achieve switchable properties in molecule-based single crystals.
