(Benz)Imidazolin-2-iminato Aluminum, Zinc, and Magnesium Complexes and Their Applications in Ring Opening Polymerization of ε-Caprolactone

Tri-coordinated zinc alkyl complexes with N^S/Se coordination of imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands as precursors for efficient hydroboration of nitriles and esters

A series of tri-coordinated zinc alkyl complexes with the general molecular formula [κ2NE-{NHIRP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}ZnEt] [R = Dipp (2,6-diisopropylphenyl), E = S (3a), Se (3b) and R = tBu (tert-butyl), E = S (4a), Se (4b)] bearing imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands were prepared in good yields from the reaction between the protic imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligand [NHIRP(Ph)(E)NH-Dipp] [R = Dipp, E = S (1a), Se (1b) and R = tBu, E = S (2a), Se (2b)] and diethylzinc at room temperature. The molecular structures of all the zinc complexes were established by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In the solid state, all complexes exhibited a distorted trigonal planar geometry around the zinc ion. Metal-chalcogenide (Zn-S/Se) interactions were observed in the coordination sphere. These zinc alkyl complexes were employed as pre-catalysts in the hydroboration reaction of nitriles and esters to obtain the corresponding N,N-diborylamines and boronate esters, respectively, under ambient conditions. A wide substrate scope of nitriles and esters is presented.

Exploiting Multimetallic Cooperativity in the Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Esters and Ethers

The use of multimetallic complexes is a rapidly advancing route to enhance catalyst performance in the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters and ethers. Multimetallic catalysts often outperform their monometallic analogues in terms of reactivity and/or polymerization control, and these improvements are typically attributed to "multimetallic cooperativity". Yet the origins of multimetallic cooperativity often remain unclear. This review explores the key factors underpinning multimetallic cooperativity, including metal-metal distances, the flexibility, electronics and conformation of the ligand framework, and the coordination environment of the metal centers. Emerging trends are discussed to provide insights into why cooperativity occurs and how to harness cooperativity for the development of highly efficient multimetallic catalysts.

Titanium and Vanadium Complexes of Tridentate Phenoxy-Imine and Phenoxy-Amine Ligands and Their Application in the Ring-Opening Polymerization of Cyclic Esters

Phenoxy-imine and phenoxy-amine proligands, with the additional OH donor groups 2,4-tBu2-6-(2-CH2(OH)-C6H4N=CH)C6H3OH (L1H2), 6-(2-CH2(OH)-C6H4N=CH)C6H3OH (L2H2), and 2,4-tBu2-6-(2-CH2(OH)-C6H4NH-CH)C6H3OH (L3H2), were synthesized and their titanium (Ti-L1-Ti-L3) and vanadium (V-L1-V-L2) complexes were prepared in reactions with Ti(OiPr)4 and VO(OiPr)3, respectively. All new compounds were characterized with the use of FTIR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy; X-ray crystallography was also used to study proligands. All the complexes proved to be active catalysts in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of ε-caprolactone, rac-lactide, and L-lactide in the melt. The effects of the complex structure (transition metal type, presence of tBu substituents, and type of nitrogen donor group), as well as the polymerization time and temperature, on the monomer conversion and polymer properties were investigated in detail.

N^N vs. N^E (E = S or Se) coordination behavior of imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands towards aluminum alkyls: efficient hydroboration catalysis of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes

The synthesis, characterization, and catalytic application of six aluminum alkyl complexes supported by various imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands are described. Six different unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands [NHI^RP(Ph)(E)NH-Dipp] [R = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dipp), E = S (2a-H), Se (2b-H); R = mesityl (Mes), E = S (3a-H), Se (3b-H); R = tert-butyl (^tBu), E = S (4a-H), Se (4b-H)] were prepared by the oxidation of respective imino-phosphanamide ligands (1a, 1b and 1c) with elemental chalcogen atoms (S and Se). The aluminum complexes with imino-phosphanamidinate chalcogenide ligands with the general formulae [κ²_NN-{NHI^RP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe₂] [R = Dipp, E = S (5a), Se (5b); R = Mes, E = S (6a), Se (6b)] or [κ²_NE-{NHI^RP(Ph)(E)N-Dipp}AlMe₂] [R = ^tBu, E = S (7a), Se (7b)] were synthesized in good yields from the reaction of the suitable protic ligands (2a,b-H-4a,b-H) and trimethylaluminum in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in toluene at room temperature. All the protic ligands and aluminum complexes were well characterized by multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy, and the solid-state structures of 2a,b-H-4a,b-H, 5a,b-6a,b and 7b are established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The aluminum complexes 5a,b-7a,b were tested as catalysts for the hydroboration of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes under mild conditions. The catalytic hydroboration reactions of nitriles, alkynes, and alkenes were accomplished with complex 5b at a mild temperature under solvent-free conditions to afford a high yield of the corresponding N,N-diborylamines, vinylboranes and alkyl boronate esters, respectively.

Titanium complexes with unsymmetrically substituted imidazolin-2-iminato ligands

The reaction of the unsymmetrical N-heterocyclic carbenes 1-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-3-(adamantyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene (IAdMes, 1a) and 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3-(adamantyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene (IAdDipp, 1b) with trimethylsilyl azide furnished the 2-(trimethylsilylimino)imidazolines 2a (Im^AdMesNSiMe₃) and 2b (Im^AdDippNSiMe₃). Desilylation by stirring in methanol gave the corresponding imidazolin-2-imines 3a (Im^AdMesNH) and 3b (Im^AdDippNH). 2a and 2b were treated with [TiCl₄(THF)₂] (THF = tetrahydrofuran) and [CpTiCl₃] (Cp = η⁵-C₅H₅) to form the mono- and bis(imidazolin-2-iminato) titanium(IV) complexes [(Im^AdRN)TiCl₃] (4, R = Mes, Dipp), [Cp(Im^AdRN)TiCl₂] (5, R = Mes, Dipp), and [(Im^AdRN)₂TiCl₂] (6, R = Mes, Dipp). The crystal structures of all compounds except 2b were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis.

Aluminium alkyl complexes supported by imino-phosphanamide ligand as precursors for catalytic guanylation reactions of carbodiimides

Herein, we report the synthesis, characterisation, and application of three aluminium alkyl complexes, [κ²-{NHI^RP(Ph)NDipp}AlMe₂] (R = Dipp (2a), Mes (2b); tBu (2c), Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, Mes = mesityl, and tBu = tert-butyl), supported by unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamide [NHI^RP(Ph)NDipp]⁻ [R = Dipp (1a), Mes (1b), tBu (1c)] ligands as molecular precursors for the catalytic synthesis of guanidines using carbodiimides and primary amines. All the imino-phosphanamide ligands 1a, 1b and 1c were prepared in good yield from the corresponding N-heterocyclic imine (NHI) with phenylchloro-2,6-diisopropylphenylphosphanamine, PhP(Cl)NHDipp. The aluminium alkyl complexes 2a, 2b and 2c were obtained in good yield upon completion of the reaction between trimethyl aluminium and the protic ligands 1a, 1b and 1c in a 1 : 1 molar ratio in toluene via the elimination of methane, respectively. The molecular structures of the protic ligands 1b and 1c and the aluminium complexes 2a, 2b and 2c were established via single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Complexes 2a, 2b and 2c were tested as pre-catalysts for the hydroamination/guanylation reaction of carbodiimides with aryl amines to afford guanidines at ambient temperature. All the aluminium complexes exhibited a high conversion with 1.5 mol% catalyst loading and broad substrate scope with a wide functional group tolerance during the guanylation reaction. We also proposed the most plausible mechanism, involving the formation of catalytically active three-coordinate Al species as the active pre-catalyst.

Three aluminium alkyl complexes, [κ²-{Im^RNP(Ph)NDipp}AlMe₂] (2a–2c), supported by unsymmetrical imino-phosphanamide were synthesised and utilised as competent precatalysts for the hydroamination of carbodiimides under ambient conditions.

Isoselective Polymerization of rac-Lactide by Aluminum Complexes of N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Phosphinidene Adducts

The N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene adducts (NHC)PH were reacted with AlMe3 in toluene to afford the monoaluminum complexes [{(IDipp)PH}AlMe3 ] and [{(IMes)PH}AlMe3 ] (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene, IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene). In contrast, the dialuminum complex [{(Me IMes)PH}(AlMe3 )2 ] was obtained for Me IMes=1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-4,5-dimethylimidazolin-2-ylidene. These complexes served as initiators for the efficient ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide in toluene at 60 °C. High degrees of isoselectivity were found for the poly(rac-lactide) obtained in the presence of the monoaluminum complexes (Pm up to 0.92, Tm up to 191 °C), whereas almost atactic polymers were produced by the dialuminum complex. Detailed mechanistic studies reveal that the polymerization proceeds via a coordination-insertion mechanism with the carbene-phosphinidene ligands acting as stereodirecting groups.

Ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone initiated by titanium and vanadium complexes of ONO-type schiff base ligand

A phenoxy-imine proligand with the additional OH donor group, 4,6-tBu2-2-(2-CH2(OH)-C6H4N = CH)C6H3OH (LH2), was synthesized and used to prepare group 4 and 5 complexes by reacting with Ti(OiPr)4 (LTi) and VO(OiPr)3 (LV). All new compounds were characterized by the FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and LTi by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The complexes were used as catalysts in the ring opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone. The influence of monomer/transition metal molar ratio, reaction time, polymerization temperature as well as complex type was investigated in detail. The complexes showed high (LTi) and moderate (LV) activity in ε-caprolactone polymerization and the resultant polycaprolactones exhibited Mn and Mw/Mn values ranging from 4.0 · 103 to 18.7 · 103 g/mol and from 1.4 to 2.5, respectively.

Sodium complexes bearing cavity-like conformations: a highly active and well-controlled catalytic system for macrolactone homo- and copolymerization

Me CAAC=N- : A Cyclic (Alkyl)(Amino)Carbene Imino Ligand

A cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) has been shown to react with a covalent azide similar to the Staudinger reaction. The reaction of Me CAAC with trimethylsilyl azide afforded the N-silylated 2-iminopyrrolidine (Me CAAC=NSiMe3 ), which was fully characterized. This compound undergoes hydrolysis to afford the 2-iminopyrrolidine and trimethylsiloxane which co-crystallize as a hydrogen-bonded adduct. The N-silylated 2-iminopyrrolidine was used to transfer the novel pyrrolidine-2-iminato ligand onto both main-group and transition-metal centers. The reaction of the tetrabromodiborane bis(dimethyl sulfide) adduct with two equivalents of Me CAAC=NSiMe3 afforded the disubstituted diborane. The reaction of Me CAAC=NSiMe3 with TiCl4 and CpTiCl3 afforded Me CAAC=NTiCl3 and Me CAAC=NTiCl2 Cp, respectively.
