Abstract
β-Chiral carboxylic acids and their derivatives are highly valuable structural motifs in the fields of asymmetric synthesis and medicinal chemistry. However, the introduction of a sterically demanding sidechain to the β-carbon, such as an all-carbon quaternary center, remains a significant challenge in classical polar processes. Recently, N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) mediated coupling reactions involving persistent ketyl radicals have emerged as a promising strategy to assemble highly crowded carbon-carbon bonds. Nevertheless, achieving enantioselectivity in these reactions remains highly challenging. In this work, we report our recent progress in controlling enantioselectivity for relay coupling of perfluoroalkyl and persistent vinylogous ketyl radicals. We developed a chiral bifunctional NHC-squaramide catalyst that achieves high facial selectivity in a critical bond-forming event involving the coupling of a congested tertiary carbon radical and vinylogous ketyl radical. Chiral carboxylates bearing an all-carbon quaternary center at the β-position can be prepared in good yield and excellent enantiomeric excess. Results from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) experiments indicate that the N,N'-diaryl squaramide motif adopts an unusual syn-syn conformation, enabling hydrogen bonding interactions with the enolate oxygen, thereby rigidifying the overall conformation of the transition state.

Abstract
The first synthesis of Pd-PEPPSI N-heterocyclic carbene complexes derived from the abundant and renewable natural product caffeine is reported. The catalysts bearing 3-chloro-pyridine, pyridine and N-methylimidazole ancillary ligands were readily prepared from the corresponding N9-Me caffeine imidazolium salt by direct deprotonation and coordination to PdX2 in the presence of N-heterocycles or by ligand displacement of PdX2(Het)2. The model Pd-PEPPSI-caffeine complex has been characterized by x-ray crystallography. The complexes were successfully employed in the Suzuki cross-coupling of aryl bromides, Suzuki cross-coupling of amides, Heck cross-coupling and Sonogashira cross-coupling. Computational studies were employed to determine frontier molecular orbitals and bond order analysis of caffeine derived Pd-PEPPSI complexes. This class of catalysts offers an entry to utilize benign and sustainable biomass-derived Xanthine NHC ligands in the popular Pd-PEPPSI systems in organic synthesis and catalysis.

Abstract
Here, we demonstrated a transition metal-mediated/monophosphorus ligand system for the selective synthesis of ketones or chiral allylic alcohols in high yields/enantiomeric excess from the 1,2-addition of arylboronic acids to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes. Notably, isomerization of the chiral allylic alcohols to ketones was suppressed by the Ru-catalyzed/monophosphorus ligand system. The asymmetric catalytic system provides an alternative and efficient method of preparing chiral allylic alcohols.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of C(sp3)-hybridised boronic compounds still remains a challenging task, thereby hindering the broad application of alkyl boron substrates in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions. Herein, we developed an NHC/photoredox dual catalytic cross-coupling of alkyl trifluoroborates with acid fluorides, providing an alternative solution to the classical acylative Suzuki coupling chemistry. With this protocol, various ketones could be rapidly synthesised from readily available materials under mild conditions. Preliminary mechanistic studies shed light on the unique radical reaction mechanism.

Abstract
In this study, 2,3-dicyanopyrazino phenanthrene (DCPP), a commodity chemical that can be prepared at an industrial scale, was used as a photocatalyst in lieu of Ru or Ir complexes in C-X (X = C, N, and O) bond-forming reactions under visible-light irradiation. In these reactions, [DCPP]n aggregates were formed in situ through physical π-π stacking of DCPP monomers in organic solvents. These aggregates exhibited excellent photo- and electrochemical properties, including a visible light response (430 nm), long excited-state lifetime (19.3 μs), high excited-state reduction potential (Ered([DCPP]n*/[DCPP]n·-) = +2.10 V vs SCE), and good reduction stability. The applications of [DCPP]n aggregates as a versatile visible-light photocatalyst were demonstrated in decarboxylative C-C cross-coupling, amidation, and esterification reactions.

Abstract
We have developed a carbonylative approach to the synthesis of diversely substituted 2-aroylbenzoate esters featuring a new protocol for the carbonylative coupling of aryl bromides with boronic acids and a new strategy to favour carbonylative over non-carbonylative reactions. Two different synthetic pathways - (i) the alkoxycarbonylation of 2-bromo benzophenones and (ii) the carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of 2-bromobenzoate esters - were evaluated. The latter approach provided a broader substrate tolerance, and thus was the preferred pathway. We observed that 2-substituted aryl bromides were challenging substrates for carbonylative chemistry favouring the non-carbonylative pathway. However, we found that carbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura couplings can be improved by slow addition of the boronic acid, suppressing the unwanted direct Suzuki coupling and, thus increasing the yield of the carbonylative reaction.

Abstract
The direct reduction of carboxylic acids to aldehydes is a fundamental transformation in organic synthesis. The combination of an air-stable Ni precatalyst, dimethyl dicarbonate as an activator, and silane reductant effects this reduction for a wide variety of substrates, including pharmaceutically relevant structures, in good yields and with no overreduction to alcohols. Moreover, this methodology is scalable, allows access to deuterated aldehydes, and is also compatible with one-pot utilization of the aldehyde products.

Abstract
Acyl Suzuki cross-coupling involves the coupling of an organoboron reagent with an acyl electrophile (acyl halide, anhydride, ester, amide). This review provides a timely overview of the very important advances that have recently taken place in the acylative Suzuki cross-coupling. Particular emphasis is directed toward the type of acyl electrophiles, catalyst systems and new cross-coupling partners. This review will be of value to synthetic chemists involved in this rapidly developing field of Suzuki cross-coupling as well as those interested in using acylative Suzuki cross-coupling for the synthesis of ketones as a catalytic alternative to stoichiometric nucleophilic additions or Friedel-Crafts reactions.

Abstract
A highly efficient acylative cross-coupling of trialkylboranes with activated amides has been effected at room temperature to give the corresponding alkyl ketones in good to excellent yields by using 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropyl)phenylimidazolylidene and 3-chloropyridine co-supported palladium chloride, the PEPPSI catalyst, in the presence of K₂CO₃ in methyl tert-butyl ether. The scope and limitations of the protocol were investigated, showing good tolerance of acyl, cyano, and ester functional groups in the amide counterpart while halo group competed via the classical Suzuki coupling. The trialkylboranes generated in situ by hydroboration of olefins with BH₃ or 9-BBN performed similarly to those separately prepared, making this protocol more practical.

Abstract
An efficient and mild method for acyl-Csp3 bond formation based on the direct conversion of carboxylic acids has been established. This protocol is enabled by the synergistic, Ir-photoredox/nickel catalytic cross-coupling of in situ activated carboxylic acids and alkyltrifluoroborates. This versatile method is amenable to the cross-coupling of structurally diverse carboxylic acids with various potassium alkyltrifluoroborates, affording the corresponding ketones with high yields. In this operationally simple cross-coupling protocol, aliphatic ketones are obtained in one step from bench stable, readily available carboxylic acids.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is among the most important C-C bond-forming reactions available due to its reliability, chemoselectivity, and diversity. Aryl halides and pseudohalides such as iodides, bromides, and triflates are traditionally used as the electrophilic coupling partner. The expansion of the reaction scope to nontraditional electrophiles is an ongoing challenge to enable an even greater number of useful products to be made from simple starting materials. Herein, we present how an NHC-based Pd catalyst can enable Suzuki-Miyaura coupling where the C(acyl)-O bond of aryl esters takes on the role of electrophile, allowing the synthesis of various ketone-containing products. This contrasts known reactions of similar esters that provide biaryls via nickel catalysis. The underlying cause of this mechanistic divergence is investigated by DFT calculations, and the robustness of esters compared to more electrophilic acylative coupling partners is analyzed.
