Spiers Memorial Lecture: New directions in molecular scattering

The field of molecular scattering is reviewed as it pertains to gas-gas as well as gas-surface chemical reaction dynamics. We emphasize the importance of collaboration of experiment and theory, from which new directions of research are being pursued on increasingly complex problems. We review both experimental and theoretical advances that provide the modern toolbox available to molecular-scattering studies. We distinguish between two classes of work. The first involves simple systems and uses experiment to validate theory so that from the validated theory, one may learn far more than could ever be measured in the laboratory. The second class involves problems of great complexity that would be difficult or impossible to understand without a partnership of experiment and theory. Key topics covered in this review include crossed-beams reactive scattering and scattering at extremely low energies, where quantum effects dominate. They also include scattering from surfaces, reactive scattering and kinetics at surfaces, and scattering work done at liquid surfaces. The review closes with thoughts on future promising directions of research.

Probing the interfacial structure of aqueous surfactants through helium atom evaporation

Dissolved helium atoms evaporate from liquids in super-Maxwellian speed distributions because their interactions are too weak to enforce full thermal equilibration at the surface as they are "squeezed" out of solution. The excess speeds of these He atoms reflect their final interactions with solvent and solute molecules at the surfaces of water and other liquids. We extend this observation by monitoring He atom evaporation from salty water solutions coated with surfactants. These surface-active molecules span neutral, anionic, and cationic amphiphiles: butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, pentanol, pentanoic acid, pentanoate, tetrabutylammonium, benzyltrimethylammonium, hexyltrimethylammonium, and dodecyltrimethylammonium, each characterized by surface tension measurements. The helium energy distributions, recorded in vacuum using a salty water microjet, reveal a sharp distinction between neutral and ionic surfactant films. Helium atoms evaporate through neutral surfactant monolayers in speed distributions that are similar to a pure hydrocarbon, reflecting the common alkyl chains of both. In contrast, He atoms appear to evaporate through ionic surfactant layers in distributions that are closer to pure salty water. We speculate that the ionic surfactants distribute themselves more loosely and deeply through the top layers of the aqueous solution than do neutral surfactants, with gaps between the surfactants that may be filled with salty water. This difference is supported by prior molecular dynamics simulations and ion scattering measurements of surfactant solutions.

Mechanistic Insights into N2O5-Halide Ions Chemistry at the Air-Water Interface

The activation of halogens (X = Cl, Br, I) by N2O5 is linked to NOx sources, ozone concentrations, NO3 reactivity, and the chemistry of halide-containing aerosol particles. However, a detailed chemical mechanism is still lacking. Herein, we explored the chemistry of the N2O5···X- systems at the air-water interface. Two different reaction pathways were identified for the reaction of N2O5 with X- at the air-water interface: the formation of XNO2 or XONO, along with NO3-. In the case of the Cl- system, the ClNO2 generation pathway is more favorable, while for the Br- and I- systems, the formation of BrONO and IONO is barrierless, making them the predominant products. Furthermore, the mechanisms of formation of X2 from XNO2 and XONO were also investigated. The high energy barriers of reactions and the high free energies of the products compared to those of the reactants indicate that ClNO2 is stable at the air-water interface. Contrary to the widely held belief regarding X2 producing from the reaction of XNO2 with X-, our calculations demonstrate that BrONO and IONO initially form stable BrONO···Br- and IONO···I- complexes, which then subsequently react with Br- and I- to form Br3- and I3-, respectively. Finally, Br3- and I3- decompose to form Br2 and I2. These findings have significant implications for experimental interpretation and offer new insights into halogen cycling in the atmosphere.

Phase Transitions in Organic and Organic/Inorganic Aerosol Particles

The phase state of aerosol particles can impact numerous atmospheric processes, including new particle growth, heterogeneous chemistry, cloud condensation nucleus formation, and ice nucleation. In this article, the phase transitions of inorganic, organic, and organic/inorganic aerosol particles are discussed, with particular focus on liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). The physical chemistry that determines whether LLPS occurs, at what relative humidity it occurs, and the resultant particle morphology is explained using both theoretical and experimental methods. The known impacts of LLPS on aerosol processes in the atmosphere are discussed. Finally, potential evidence for LLPS from field and chamber studies is presented. By understanding the physical chemistry of the phase transitions of aerosol particles, we will acquire a better understanding of aerosol processes, which in turn impact human health and climate.

Molecular Insights into Chemical Reactions at Aqueous Aerosol Interfaces

Atmospheric aerosols facilitate reactions between ambient gases and dissolved species. Here, we review our efforts to interrogate the uptake of these gases and the mechanisms of their reactions both theoretically and experimentally. We highlight the fascinating behavior of N2O5 in solutions ranging from pure water to complex mixtures, chosen because its aerosol-mediated reactions significantly impact global ozone, hydroxyl, and methane concentrations. As a hydrophobic, weakly soluble, and highly reactive species, N2O5 is a sensitive probe of the chemical and physical properties of aerosol interfaces. We employ contemporary theory to disentangle the fate of N2O5 as it approaches pure and salty water, starting with adsorption and ending with hydrolysis to HNO3, chlorination to ClNO2, or evaporation. Flow reactor and gas-liquid scattering experiments probe even greater complexity as added ions, organic molecules, and surfactants alter the interfacial composition and reaction rates. Together, we reveal a new perspective on multiphase chemistry in the atmosphere.

Highly Selective Tandem Photoelectrochemical C-H Activation via Bromine Evolution Reaction in Two-Phase Electrolyte

The development of environmentally friendly and safe chemical processes using renewable energy sources is important. In this study, a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell was used for the tandem bromination of sp3 carbon within a unique two-phase electrolyte system. By incorporation of a RuOx cocatalyst, the Ta3N5 photoelectrode demonstrated a remarkable selectivity for Br2 close to 100%. The kinetic study for charge carriers of photoelectrodes reveals that the improved charge transfer at Ta3N5/RuOx interfaces contributed to excellent photoelectrochemical Br2 evolution activity. The photoelectrochemically produced Br2 was utilized for bromination of α-sp3 carbon in toluene, 1-methylnaphthalene, ethylbenzene, or cyclohexane by the Ta3N5/RuOx photoanode with 100% regioselectivity. The coupling of the Ta3N5 photoanode and InP photocathode generated H2 and Br2 under light illumination without external bias. This study provides systematic insights into the design of photoelectrodes for solar-driven tandem bromination systems within the unique environment of a two-phase electrolyte system.

Creation and Reaction of Solvated Electrons at and near the Surface of Water

Solvated electrons (e_s^-) are among nature's most powerful reactants, with over 2600 reactions investigated in bulk water. These electrons can also be created at and near the surface of water by exposing an aqueous microjet in vacuum to gas-phase sodium atoms, which ionize into e_s^- and Na⁺ within the top few layers. When a reactive surfactant is added to the jet, the surfactant and e_s^- become coreactants localized in the interfacial region. We report the reaction of e_s^- with the surfactant benzyltrimethylammonium in a 6.7 M LiBr/water microjet at 235 K and pH = 2. The reaction intermediates trimethylamine (TMA) and benzyl radical are identified by mass spectrometry after they evaporate from solution into the gas phase. Their detection demonstrates that TMA can escape before it is protonated and benzyl before it combines with itself or a H atom. Diffusion-reaction calculations indicate that e_s^- reacts on average within 20 Å of the surface and perhaps within the surfactant monolayer itself, while unprotonated TMA evaporates from the top 40 Å. The escape depth exceeds 1300 Å for the more slowly reacting benzyl radical. These proof-of-principle experiments establish an approach for exploring the near-interfacial analogues of aqueous bulk-phase radical chemistry through the evaporation of reaction intermediates into the gas phase.

Effects of Microhydration on the Mechanisms of Hydrolysis and Cl- Substitution in Reactions of N2 O5 and Seawater

The reaction of N₂ O₅ at atmospheric interfaces has recently received considerable attention due to its importance in atmospheric chemistry. N₂ O₅ reacts preferentially with Cl^- to form ClNO₂ /NO₃ ^- (Cl^- substitution), but can also react with H₂ O to form 2HNO₃ (hydrolysis). In this paper, we explore these competing reactions in a theoretical study of the clusters N₂ O₅ /Cl^- /nH₂ O (n=2-5), resulting in the identification of three reaction motifs. First, we uncovered an S_N 2-type Cl^- substitution reaction of N₂ O₅ that occurs very quickly due to low barriers to reaction. Second, we found a low-lying pathway to hydrolysis via a ClNO₂ intermediate (two-step hydrolysis). Finally, we found a direct hydrolysis pathway where H₂ O attacks N₂ O₅ (one-step hydrolysis). We find that Cl^- substitution is the fastest reaction in every cluster. Between one-step and two-step hydrolysis, we find that one-step hydrolysis barriers are lower, making two-step hydrolysis (via ClNO₂ intermediate) likely only when concentrations of Cl^- are high.

Exploring Gas-Liquid Reactions with Microjets: Lessons We Are Learning

Liquid water is all around us: at the beach, in a cloud, from a faucet, inside a spray tower, covering our lungs. It is fascinating to imagine what happens to a reactive gas molecule as it approaches the surface of water in these examples. Some incoming molecules may first be deflected away after colliding with an evaporating water molecule. Those that do strike surface H₂O or other surface species may bounce directly off or become momentarily trapped through hydrogen bonding or other attractive forces. The adsorbed gas molecule can then desorb immediately or instead dissolve, passing through the interfacial region and into the bulk, perhaps diffusing back to the surface and evaporating before reacting. Alternatively, it may react with solute or water molecules in the interfacial or bulk regions, and a reaction intermediate or the final product may then desorb into the gas phase. Building a "blow by blow" picture of these pathways is challenging for vacuum-based techniques because of the high vapor pressure of water. In particular, collisions within the thick vapor cloud created by evaporating molecules just above the surface scramble the trajectories and internal states of the gaseous target molecules, hindering construction of gas-liquid reaction mechanisms at the atomic scale that we strive to map out.The introduction of the microjet in 1988 by Faubel, Schlemmer, and Toennies opened up entirely new possibilities. Their inspired solution seems so simple: narrow the end of a glass tube to a diameter smaller than the mean free path of the vapor molecules and then push the liquid through the tube at speeds of a car on a highway. The narrow liquid stream creates a sparse vapor cloud, with water molecules spaced far enough apart that they and the reactant gases interact, at most, weakly. Experimentalists, however, confront a host of challenges: nozzle clogging, unstable jetting, searching for vacuum-compatible solutions, measuring low signal levels, and teasing out artifacts because the slender jet is the smallest surface in the vacuum chamber. In this Account, we describe lessons that we are learning as we explore gases (DCl, (HCOOH)₂, N₂O₅) reacting with water molecules and solute ions in the near-interfacial region of these fast-flowing aqueous microjets.

Impact of Tetrabutylammonium on the Oxidation of Bromide by Ozone

The reaction of ozone with sea-salt derived bromide is relevant for marine boundary layer atmospheric chemistry. The oxidation of bromide by ozone is enhanced at aqueous interfaces. Ocean surface water and sea spray aerosol are enriched in organic compounds, which may also have a significant effect on this reaction at the interface. Here, we assess the surface propensity of cationic tetrabutylammonium at the aqueous liquid-vapor interface by liquid microjet X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the effect of this surfactant on ozone uptake to aqueous bromide solutions. The results clearly indicate that the positively charged nitrogen group in tetrabutylammonium (TBA), along with its surface activity, leads to an enhanced interfacial concentration of both bromide and the bromide ozonide reaction intermediate. In parallel, off-line kinetic experiments for the same system demonstrate a strongly enhanced ozone loss rate in the presence of TBA, which is attributed to an enhanced surface reaction rate. We used liquid jet XPS to obtain detailed chemical composition information from the aqueous-solution-vapor interface of mixed aqueous solutions containing bromide or bromide and chloride with and without TBA surfactant. Core level spectra of Br 3d, C 1s, Cl 2p, N 1s, and O 1s were used for this comparison. A model was developed to account for the attenuation of photoelectrons by the carbon-rich layer established by the TBA surfactant. We observed that the interfacial density of bromide is increased by an order of magnitude in solutions with TBA. The salting-out of TBA in the presence of 0.55 M sodium chloride is apparent. The increased interfacial bromide density can be rationalized by the association constants for bromide and chloride to form ion-pairs with TBA. Still, the interfacial reactivity is not increasing simply proportionally with the increasing interfacial bromide concentration in response to the presence of TBA. The steady state concentration of the bromide ozonide intermediate increases by a smaller degree, and the lifetime of the intermediate is 1 order of magnitude longer in the presence of TBA. Thus, the influence of cationic surfactants on the reactivity of bromide depends on the details of the complex environment at the interface.
