XANES Reveals the Flexible Nature of Hydrated Strontium in Aqueous Solution

Hydration Structure of 102No2+: A Density Functional Theory-Molecular Dynamics Study

The hydration structure of No2+, the divalent cation of nobelium in water, was investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. First, a series of benchmark calculations were performed to validate the density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods for a molecule containing a No atom. The DFT-MD simulation of the hydration structure of No2+ was conducted after the MD method was validated by simulating the hydration structures of Ca2+ and Sr2+, whose behavior was previously reported to be similar to that of No2+. The model cluster containing M2+ (M = Ca, Sr, or No) and 32 water molecules was used for DFT-MD simulation. The results showed that the hydration distance of No2+ was intermediate between those of Ca2+ and Sr2+. This trend in the hydration distance is in good agreement with the elution position trend obtained in a previous radiochemical experiment. The calculated No-O bond lengths in the optimized structure of [No(H2O)8]2+ was 2.59 Å, while the average No-O bond length of [No(H2O)8]2+ in water by DFT-MD was 2.55 Å. This difference implies the importance of dynamic solvent effects, considering the second (and further) coordination sphere in the theoretical calculation of solution chemistry for superheavy elements.

Madrid-2019 force field: An extension to divalent cations Sr2+ and Ba2

In this work, we present a parameterization of Sr2+ and Ba2+ cations, which expands the alkali earth set of cations of the Madrid-2019 force field. We have tested the model against the experimental densities of eight different salts, namely, SrCl2, SrBr2, SrI2, Sr(NO3)2, BaCl2, BaBr2, BaI2, and Ba(NO3)2. The force field is able to reproduce the experimental densities of all these salts up to their solubility limit. Furthermore, we have computed the viscosities for two selected salts, finding that the experimental values are overestimated, but the predictions are still reasonable. Finally, the structural properties for all the salts have been calculated with this model and align remarkably well with experimental observations.

Protein Ca2+-Sites Prone to Sr2+ Substitution: Implications for Strontium Therapy

Strontium (Sr), an alkali metal with properties similar to calcium, in the form of soluble salts is used to treat osteoporosis. Despite the information accumulated on the role of Sr²⁺ as a Ca²⁺ mimetic in biology and medicine, there is no systematic study of how the outcome of the competition between the two dications depends on the physicochemical properties of (i) the metal ions, (ii) the first- and second-shell ligands, and (iii) the protein matrix. Specifically, the key features of a Ca²⁺-binding protein that enable Sr²⁺ to displace Ca²⁺ remain unclear. To address this, we studied the competition between Ca²⁺ and Sr²⁺ in protein Ca²⁺-binding sites using density functional theory combined with the polarizable continuum model. Our findings indicate that Ca²⁺-sites with multiple strong charge-donating protein ligands, including one or more bidentately bound Asp^-/Glu^- that are relatively buried and rigid are protected against Sr²⁺ attack. On the other hand, Ca²⁺-sites crowded with multiple protein ligands may be prone to Sr²⁺ displacement if they are solvent-exposed and flexible enough so that an extra backbone ligand from the outer shell can bind to Sr²⁺. In addition, solvent-exposed Ca²⁺ sites with only a few weak charge-donating ligands that can rearrange to fit the strontium's coordination requirements are susceptible to Sr²⁺ displacement. We provide the physical basis of these results and discuss potential novel protein targets of therapeutic Sr²⁺.

Direct Observation of Contact Ion-Pair Formation in La3+ Methanol Solution

An approach combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been used to carry out a comparative study about the solvation properties of dilute La(NO₃)₃ solutions in water and methanol, with the aim of elucidating the still elusive coordination of the La³⁺ ion in the latter medium. The comparison between these two systems enlightened a different behavior of the nitrate counterions in the two environments: while in water the La(NO₃)₃ salt is fully dissociated and the La³⁺ ion is coordinated by water molecules only, the nitrate anions are able to enter the metal first solvation shell to form inner-sphere complexes in methanol solution. The speciation of the formed complexes showed that the 10-fold coordination is preferential in methanol solution, where the nitrate anions coordinate the La³⁺ cations in a monodentate fashion and the methanol molecules complete the solvation shell to form an overall bicapped square antiprism geometry. This is at variance with the aqueous solution where a more balanced situation is observed between the 9- and 10-fold coordination. An experimental confirmation of the MD results was obtained by La K-edge XAS measurements carried out on 0.1 M La(NO₃)₃ solutions in the two solvents, showing the distinct presence of the nitrate counterions in the La³⁺ ion first solvation sphere of the methanol solution. The analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) part of the absorption spectrum collected on the methanol solution was carried out starting from the MD results and confirmed the structural arrangement observed by the simulations.

The formation of contact ion pairs between the La³⁺ ions and the nitrate anions has been demonstrated in diluted methanol solution using a combined approach using Molecular Dynamics simulations and X-ray absorption spectroscpy.

Caught while Dissolving: Revealing the Interfacial Solvation of the Mg2+ Ions on the MgO Surface

Interfaces between water and materials are ubiquitous and are crucial in materials sciences and in biology, where investigating the interaction of water with the surface under ambient conditions is key to shedding light on the main processes occurring at the interface. Magnesium oxide is a popular model system to study the metal oxide-water interface, where, for sufficient water loadings, theoretical models have suggested that reconstructed surfaces involving hydrated Mg²⁺ metal ions may be energetically favored. In this work, by combining experimental and theoretical surface-selective ambient pressure X-ray absorption spectroscopy with multivariate curve resolution and molecular dynamics, we evidence in real time the occurrence of Mg²⁺ solvation at the interphase between MgO and solvating media such as water and methanol (MeOH). Further, we show that the Mg²⁺ surface ions undergo a reversible solvation process, we prove the dissolution/redeposition of the Mg²⁺ ions belonging to the MgO surface, and we demonstrate the formation of octahedral [Mg(H₂O)₆]²⁺ and [Mg(MeOH)₆]²⁺ intermediate solvated species. The unique surface, electronic, and structural sensitivity of the developed technique may be beneficial to access often elusive properties of low-Z metal ion intermediates involved in interfacial processes of chemical and biological interest.

Solubilization and coordination of the HgCl2 molecule in water, methanol, acetone, and acetonitrile: an X-ray absorption investigation

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been employed to carry out structural characterization of the local environment around mercury after the dissolution of the HgCl₂ molecule. A combined EXAFS (extended X-ray absorption fine structure) and XANES (X-ray absorption near edge structure) data analysis has been performed on the Hg L₃-edge absorption spectra recorded on 0.1 M HgCl₂ solutions in water, methanol (MeOH), acetone and acetonitrile. The Hg-Cl distance determined by EXAFS (2.29(2)-2.31(2) Å) is always comparable to that found in the HgCl₂ crystal (2.31(2) Å), demonstrating that the HgCl₂ molecule dissolves in these solvents without dissociating. A small sensitivity of EXAFS to the solvent molecules interacting with HgCl₂ has been detected and indicates a high degree of configurational disorder associated with this contribution. XANES data analysis, which is less affected by the disorder, was therefore carried out for the first time on these systems to shed light into the still elusive structural arrangement of the solvent molecules around HgCl₂. The obtained results show that, in aqueous and MeOH solutions, the XANES data are compatible with three solvent molecules arranged around the HgCl₂ unit to form a trigonal bipyramidal structure. The determination of the three-body Cl-Hg-Cl distribution shows a certain degree of uncertainty around the average 180° bond angle value, suggesting that the HgCl₂ molecule probably vibrates in the solution around a linear configuration.

On the Role of Water in the Formation of a Deep Eutectic Solvent Based on NiCl2·6H2O and Urea

The metal-based deep eutectic solvent (MDES) formed by NiCl₂·6H₂O and urea in 1:3.5 molar ratio has been prepared for the first time and characterized from a structural point of view. Particular accent has been put on the role of water in the MDES formation, since the eutectic could not be obtained with the anhydrous form of the metal salt. To this end, mixtures at different water/MDES molar ratios (W) have been studied with a combined approach exploiting molecular dynamics and ab initio simulations, UV–vis and near-infra-red spectroscopies, small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements. In the pure MDES, a close packing of Ni²⁺ ion clusters forming oligomeric agglomerates is present thanks to the mediation of bridging chloride anions and water molecules. Conversely, urea poorly coordinates the metal ion and is mostly found in the interstitial regions among the Ni²⁺ ion oligomers. This nanostructure is disrupted upon the introduction of additional water, which enlarges the Ni–Ni distances and dilutes the system up to an aqueous solution of the MDES constituents. In the NiCl₂·6H₂O 1:3.5 MDES, the Ni²⁺ ion is coordinated on average by one chloride anion and five water molecules, while water easily saturates the metal solvation sphere to provide a hexa-aquo coordination for increasing W values. This multidisciplinary study allowed us to reconstruct the structural arrangement of the MDES and its aqueous mixtures on both short- and intermediate-scale levels, clarifying the fundamental role of water in the eutectic formation and challenging the definition at the base of these complex systems.

In Situ Determination of Speciation and Local Structure of NaCl-SrCl2 and LiF-ZrF4 Molten Salts

Understanding the local environment of the metal atoms in salt melts is important for modeling the properties of melts and predicting their behavior and thus helping enable the development of technologies such as molten salt reactors and solar-thermal power systems and new approaches to recycling rare-earth metals. Toward that end, we have developed an in situ approach for measuring the coordination of metals in molten salt coupling X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Raman spectroscopy. Our approach was demonstrated for two salt mixtures (1.9 and 5 mol % SrCl₂ in NaCl, 0.8 and 5 mol % ZrF₄ in LiF) at up to 1100 °C. Near-edge (X-ray absorption near-edge structure, XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra were measured. The EXAFS response was modeled using ab initio FEFF calculations. Strontium's first shell is observed to be coordinated with chlorine (Sr²⁺-Cl^-) and zirconium's first shell is coordinated by fluorine (Zr⁴⁺-F^-), both having coordination numbers that decrease with increasing temperature. Multiple zirconium complexes are believed to be present in the melt, which may interfere and distort the EXAFS spectra and result in an anomalously low zirconium first shell coordination number. The use of boron nitride (BN) powder as a salt diluent for XAFS measurements was found to not interfere with measurements and thus can be used for investigations of such systems.

Structural and mechanistic insights into low-temperature CO oxidation over a prototypical high entropy oxide by Cu L-edge operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

High entropy oxides (HEOs) are an emerging class of materials constituted by multicomponent systems that are receiving special interest as candidates for obtaining novel and desirable properties. In this study we present a detailed investigation of the relevant intermediates arising at the surface of the prototypical HEO Mg_0.2Co_0.2Ni_0.2Cu_0.2Zn_0.2O during low-temperature CO oxidation. By combining Cu L_2,3-edge operando soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (soft-XAS) with density functional theory simulations and in situ FT-IR spectroscopy, we propose that upon HEO exposure to CO at 235 °C reduced Cu(I) sites arise mostly coordinated to activated CO molecules and partly to bidentate carbonate species. When the HEO surface is then exposed to a stoichiometric mixture of CO + 1/2O₂ at 250 °C, CO₂ is produced while bidentate carbonate moieties remain interacting with the Cu(I) sites. We structurally characterize the carbonate and CO preferential adsorption geometries on the Cu(I) surface metal centers, and find that CO adopts a bent conformation that may energetically favor its subsequent oxidation. The unique surface, structural and electronic sensitivity of soft-XAS coupled with the developed data analysis work-flow and supported by FT-IR spectroscopy may be beneficial to characterize often elusive surface properties of systems of catalytic interest.

Two Faces of the Same Coin: Coupling X-Ray Absorption and NMR Spectroscopies to Investigate the Exchange Reaction Between Prototypical Cu Coordination Complexes

The satisfactory rationalization of complex reactive pathways in solution chemistry may greatly benefit from the combined use of advanced experimental and theoretical complementary methods of analysis. In this work, we combine X-Ray Absorption and ¹ H NMR spectroscopies with state-of-the-art Multivariate Curve Resolution and theoretical analyses to gain a comprehensive view on a prototypical reaction involving the variation of the oxidation state and local structure environment of a selected metal ion coordinated by organic ligands. Specifically, we investigate the 2-cyano-2-phenylpropanoic acid reduction of the octahedral complex established by the Cu²⁺ ion with terpyridine to the tetrahedral complex formed by Cu⁺ and neocuproine. Through our interdisciplinary approach we gain insights into the nature, concentration time evolution and structures of the key metal (XAS measurements) and organic (¹ H NMR measurements) species under reaction. We believe our method may prove to be useful in the toolbox necessary to understand the mechanisms of reactive processes of interest in solution.

Hydration and Charge-Transfer Effects of Alkaline Earth Metal Ions Binding to a Carboxylate Anion, Phosphate Anion, and Guanine Nucleobase

To investigate the ability of alkaline earth metal ions to tune ion-mediated DNA adsorption, hydrated Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Ba²⁺ ions bound to a carboxylate anion, phosphate anion, and guanine nucleobase were modeled using density functional theory (DFT) and a combined explicit and continuum solvent model. The large first solvation shell of Ba²⁺ requires a larger solute cavity defined by a solvent-accessible surface, which is used to model all hydrated ions. Alkaline earth metal ions bind indirectly or directly to each binding site. DFT binding energies decrease with increasing ion size, which is likely due to ion size and hydration structure, rather than quantum effects such as charge transfer. However, charge transfer explains weaker ion binding to guanine compared to phosphate or carboxylate. Overall, carboxylate and phosphate anions are expected to compete equally for hydrated Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Ba²⁺ ions and larger alkaline earth metal ions may induce weaker ion-mediated adsorption. The ion size and hydration structure of alkaline earth metal ions may effectively tune ion-mediated adsorption processes, such as DNA adsorption to functionalized surfaces.

On the Coordination Chemistry of the lanthanum(III) Nitrate Salt in EAN/MeOH Mixtures

A thorough structural characterization of the La(NO₃)₃ salt dissolved into several mixtures of ethyl ammonium nitrate (EAN) and methanol (MeOH) with EAN molar fraction χ_EAN ranging from 0 to 1 has been carried out by combining molecular dynamics (MD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XAS and MD results show that changes take place in the La³⁺ first solvation shell when moving from pure MeOH to pure EAN. With increasing the ionic liquid content of the mixture, the La³⁺ first-shell complex progressively loses MeOH molecules to accommodate more and more nitrate anions. Except in pure EAN, the La³⁺ ion is always able to coordinate both MeOH and nitrate anions, with a ratio between the two ligands that changes continuously in the entire concentration range. When moving from pure MeOH to pure EAN, the La³⁺ first solvation shell passes from a 10-fold bicapped square antiprism geometry where all the nitrate anions act only as monodentate ligands to a 12-coordinated icosahedral structure in pure EAN where the nitrate anions bind the La³⁺ cation both in mono- and bidentate modes. The La³⁺ solvation structure formed in the MeOH/EAN mixtures shows a great adaptability to changes in the composition, allowing the system to reach the ideal compromise among all of the different interactions that take place into it.

The structural properties of the La(NO₃)₃ salt dissolved into EAN/methanol mixtures were characterized by molecular dynamics and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The La³⁺ solvation shell undergoes significant changes with increasing the ionic liquid content of the mixture, progressively losing methanol molecules to accommodate more and more nitrate anions. The La³⁺ solvation structure shows great adaptability to composition changes, passing from a 10-fold bicapped square antiprism geometry in pure methanol to a 12-coordinated icosahedral complex in EAN.

Coordination of the Co2+ and Ni2+ Ions in Tf2N- Based Ionic Liquids: A Combined X-ray Absorption and Molecular Dynamics Study

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) have been combined to study the coordination of the Co2+ and Ni2+ ions in ionic liquids (ILs) based on the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Tf2N]-) anion and having different organic cations, namely, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium ([C4mim]+), 1,8-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)octane ([C8(mim)2]2+), N,N,N-trimethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium ([choline]+), and butyltrimethylammonium ([BTMA]+). Co and Ni K-edge XAS data have been collected on 0.1 mol L-1 Co(Tf2N)2 and Ni(Tf2N)2 solutions and on the metallic salts. MD simulations have been carried out to obtain structural information on the metal ion coordination. The analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of the solutions has been carried out based on the atomistic description provided by MD, and the studied ILs have been found to be able to dissolve both the Co(Tf2N)2 and Ni(Tf2N)2 salts giving rise to a different structural arrangement around the metal ions as compared to the solid state. The combined EXAFS and MD results showed that the Co2+ and Ni2+ ions are surrounded by a first solvation shell formed by six [Tf2N]- anions, each coordinating in a monodentate fashion by means of the oxygen atoms. The nature of the IL organic cation has little or no influence on the overall spatial arrangement of the [Tf2N]- anions, so that stable octahedral complexes of the type [M(Tf2N)6]4- (M = Co, Ni) have been observed in all the investigated ILs.

Water mediated growth of oriented single crystalline SrCO3 nanorod arrays on strontium compounds

Morphology-controlled strontianite nanostructures have attracted interest in various fields, such as electrocatalyst and photocatalysts. Basic additives in aqueous strontium solutions is commonly used in controlling strontianite nanostructures. Here, we show that trace water also serves an important role in forming and structuring vertically oriented strontianite nanorod arrays on strontium compounds. Using in situ Raman spectroscopy, we monitored the structural evolution from hydrated strontium to strontianite nanorods, demonstrating the epitaxial growth by vapor-liquid-solid mechanism. Water molecules cause not only the exsolution of Sr liquid droplets on the surface but also the uptake of airborne CO2 followed by its ionization to CO32-. The existence of intermediate SrHO+-OCO22- phase indicates the interaction of CO32- with SrOH+ in Sr(OH)x(H2O)y cluster to orient strontianite crystals. X-ray diffraction simulation and transmission electron microscopy identify the preferred-orientation plane of the 1D nanostructures as the (002) plane, i.e., the growth along the c-axis. The anisotropic growth habit is found to be affected by the kinetics of carbonation. This study paves the way for designing and developing 1D architecture of alkaline earth metal carbonates by a simple method without external additives at room temperature.

Activation of C-H bonds by a nonheme iron(IV)-oxo complex: mechanistic evidence through a coupled EDXAS/UV-Vis multivariate analysis

The understanding of reactive processes involving organic substrates is crucial to chemical knowledge and requires multidisciplinary efforts for its advancement. Herein, we apply a combined multivariate, statistical and theoretical analysis of coupled time-resolved X-ray absorption (XAS)/UV-Vis data to obtain detailed mechanistic information for on the C-H bond activation of 9,10-dihydroanthracene (DHA) and diphenylmethane (Ph2CH2) by the nonheme FeIV-oxo complex [N4Py·FeIV(O)]2+ (N4Py = N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine) in CH3CN at room temperature. Within this approach, we determine the number of key chemical species present in the reaction mixtures and derive spectral and concentration profiles for the reaction intermediates. From the quantitative analysis of the XAS spectra the transient intermediate species are structurally determined. As a result, it is suggested that, while DHA is oxidized by [N4Py·FeIV(O)]2+ with a hydrogen atom transfer-electron transfer (HAT-ET) mechanism, Ph2CH2 is oxidized by the nonheme iron-oxo complex through a HAT-radical dissociation pathway. In the latter process, we prove that the intermediate FeIII complex [N4Py·FeIII(OH)]2+ is not able to oxidize the diphenylmethyl radical and we provide its structural characterization in solution. The employed combined experimental and theoretical strategy is promising for the spectroscopic characterization of transient intermediates as well as for the mechanistic investigation of redox chemical transformations on the second to millisecond time scales.

Direct structural and mechanistic insights into fast bimolecular chemical reactions in solution through a coupled XAS/UV–Vis multivariate statistical analysis

A combined multivariate and theoretical analysis of coupled XAS/UV–Vis data was proven to be an innovative method to obtain direct structural and mechanistic evidence for bimolecular reactions in solution involving organic substrates.

Elusive Coordination of the Ag+ Ion in Aqueous Solution: Evidence for a Linear Structure

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been employed to study the coordination of the Ag⁺ ion in aqueous solution. The conjunction of extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) data analysis provided results suggesting the preference for a first shell linear coordination with a mean Ag-O bond distance of 2.34(2) Å, different from the first generally accepted tetrahedral model with a longer mean Ag-O bond distance. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations with the Car-Parrinello approach (CPMD) were also performed and were able to describe the coordination of the hydrated Ag⁺ ion in aqueous solution in very good agreement with the experimental data. The high sensitivity for the closest environment of the photoabsorber of the EXAFS and XANES techniques, together with the long-range information provided by CPMD and large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS), allowed us to reconstruct the three-dimensional model of the coordination geometry around the Ag⁺ ion in aqueous solution. The obtained results from experiments and theoretical simulations provided a complex picture with a certain amount of water molecules with high configurational disorder at distances comprised between the first and second hydration spheres. This evidence may have caused the proliferation of the coordination numbers that have been proposed so far for Ag⁺ in water. Altogether these data show how the description of the hydration of the Ag⁺ ion in aqueous solution can be complex, differently from other metal species where hydration structures can be described by clusters with well-defined geometries. This diffuse hydration shell causes the Ag-O bond distance in the linear [Ag(H₂O)₂]⁺ ion to be ca. 0.2 Å longer than in isolated ions in solid state.

Oxygen vacancies induced photoluminescence in [Formula: see text] nanophosphors probed by theoretical and experimental analysis

We report, for the first time, the influence of oxygen vacancies on band structure and local electronic structure of [Formula: see text] (SZO) nanophosphors by combined first principle calculations based on density functional theory and full multiple scattering theory, correlated with experimental results obtained from X-ray absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopies. The band structure analysis from density functional theory revealed the formation of new energy states in the forbidden gap due to introduction of oxygen vacancies in the system, thereby causing disruption in intrinsic symmetry and altering bond lengths in SZO system. These defect states are anticipated as origin of observed photoluminescence in SZO nanophosphors. The experimental X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) at Zn and Sr K-edges were successfully imitated by simulated XANES obtained after removing oxygen atoms around Zn and Sr cores, which affirmed the presence and signature of oxygen vacancies on near edge structure.

Direct Mechanistic Evidence for a Nonheme Complex Reaction through a Multivariate XAS Analysis

In this work, we propose a method to directly determine the mechanism of the reaction between the nonheme complex Fe^II(tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine) ([Fe^II(TPA)(CH₃CN)₂]²⁺) and peracetic acid (AcOOH) in CH₃CN, working at room temperature. A multivariate analysis is applied to the time-resolved coupled energy-dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EDXAS) reaction data, from which a set of spectral and concentration profiles for the reaction key species is derived. These “pure” extracted EDXAS spectra are then quantitatively characterized by full multiple scattering (MS) calculations. As a result, structural information for the elusive reaction intermediates [Fe^III(TPA)(κ²-OOAc)]²⁺ and [Fe^IV(TPA)(O)(X)]^+/2+ is obtained, and it is suggested that X = AcO^– in opposition to X = CH₃CN. The employed strategy is promising both for the spectroscopic characterization of reaction intermediates that are labile or silent to the conventional spectroscopic techniques, as well as for the mechanistic understanding of complex redox reactions involving organic substrates.

A combined multivariate and theoretical XAS analysis was proven to be a powerful method to obtain direct evidence for the mechanism of the reaction between the nonheme complex Fe^II(tris(2-pyridymethyl)amine) ([Fe^II(TPA)(CH₃CN)₂]²⁺) and peroxyacetic acid. This approach allowed to determine the time evolution of the concentration profiles for all reaction intermediates and to quantitatively characterize their structures, suggesting the sixth coordinating ligand of the nonheme oxo complex [Fe^IV(TPA)(O)(X)]^+/2+ is X = AcO⁻ in opposition to X = CH₃CN.

Ab initio molecular dynamics studies of hydroxide coordination of alkaline earth metals and uranyl

Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and UO22+ ions in either a pure aqueous environment or an environment containing two hydroxide ions have been carried out at the density functional level of theory, employing the generalised gradient approximation via the PBE exchange-correlation functional. Calculated mean M-O bond lengths in the first solvation shell of the aquo systems compared very well to existing experimental and computational literature, with bond lengths well within values measured previously and coordination numbers in line with previously calculated values. When applied to systems containing additional hydroxide ions, the methodology revealed increased bond lengths in all systems. Proton transfer events (PTEs) were recorded and were found to be most prevalent in the strontium hydroxide systems, likely due to the low charge density of the ion and the consequent lack of hydroxide coordination. For all alkaline earths, intrashell PTEs which occurred outside of the first solvation shell were most prevalent. Only three PTEs were identified in the entire simulation data of the uranium dihydroxide system, indicating the clear impact of the increased charge density of the hexavalent uranium ion on the strength of metal-oxygen bonds in aqueous solution. Broadly, systems containing more charge dense ions were found to exhibit fewer PTEs than those containing ions of lower charge density.

Manifestations of Weak O-H···F Hydrogen Bonding in M(H2O) n(B12F12) Salt Hydrates: Unusually Sharp Fourier Transform Infrared ν(OH) Bands and Latent Porosity (M = Mg-Ba, Co, Ni, Zn)

Eight M(H₂O) _n(Z) salt hydrates were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (Z^2- = B₁₂F₁₂^2-): M = Ca, Sr, n = 7; M = Mg, Co, Ni, Zn, n = 6; M = Ba, n = 4, 5. Weak O-H···F hydrogen bonding between the M(H₂O) _n²⁺ cations and Z^2- resulted in room-temperature Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra having sharp ν(OH) bands, with full widths at half max of 10-30 cm^-1, which are much more narrow than ν(OH) bands in room temperature FTIR spectra of most salt hydrates. Clearly resolved ν_asym(OH/OD) and ν_sym(OH/OD) bands with Δν(OH) as small as 17 cm^-1 and Δν(OD) as small as 11 cm^-1 were observed (Δν(OX) = ν_asym(OX) - ν_sym(OX)). The isomorphic hexahydrates ( R3̅) have two fac-(H₂O)₃ sets of H₂O ligands and nearly octahedral coordination spheres. They exhibited four resolvable ν(OH) bands, one ν_asym(OH)/ν_sym(OH) pair for H₂O ligands with longer O(H)···F distances and one ν_asym(OH)/ν_sym(OH) pair for H₂O ligands with shorter O(H)···F distances. The ν(OH) bands for the three H₂O molecules with shorter, slightly stronger O(H)···F hydrogen bonds were broader, more intense, and red-shifted by ca. 25 cm^-1 relative to the bands for the three other H₂O molecules, the first time that such small differences in relatively weak O(H)···F hydrogen bonds in the same crystalline hexahydrate have resulted in observable IR spectroscopic differences at room temperature. For the first time room temperature ν(OH) values for salt hexahydrates showed the monotonic progression Mg²⁺ > Co²⁺ > Ni²⁺ > Zn²⁺, essentially the same progression as the p K_a values for these metal ions in aqueous solution. A further manifestation of the weak O-H···F hydrogen bonding in these hydrates is the latent porosity exhibited by Ba(H₂O)_5,8(Z), Sr(H₂O) _n,m(Z), and Ca(H₂O)_4,6(Z). Finally, the H₂O/D₂O exchange reaction Co(D₂O)₆(Z) → Co(H₂O)₆(Z) was ca. 50% complete in 1 h at 50 °C in N₂/17 Torr H₂O( g).

A Kirkwood-Buff derived force field for alkaline earth halide salts

The activity and function of many macromolecules in cellular environments are coupled with the binding of divalent ions such as calcium or magnesium. In principle, computer simulations can be used to understand the molecular level aspects of how many important macromolecules interact with ions. However, most of the force fields currently available often fail to accurately reproduce the properties of divalent ions in aqueous environments. Here we develop classical non-polarizable force fields for the aqueous alkaline earth metal halides (MX₂), where M = Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Sr²⁺, Ba²⁺ and X = Cl^-, Br^-, I^-, which can be used in bimolecular simulations and which are compatible with the Simple Point Charge/Extended (SPC/E) water model. The force field parameters are specifically developed to reproduce the experimental Kirkwood-Buff integrals for aqueous solutions and thereby the experimental activity derivatives, partial molar volumes, and excess coordination numbers. This ensures that a reasonable balance between ion-ion, ion-water, and water-water distributions is obtained. However, this requires a scaling of the cation to water oxygen interaction strength in order to accurately reproduce the integrals. The scaling factors developed for chloride salts are successfully transferable to the bromide and iodide salts. Use of these new models leads to reasonable diffusion constants and dielectric decrements. However, the performance of the models decreases with increasing salt concentration (>4m), and simulations of the pure crystals exhibited unstable behavior.

Effect of humic acid & bacterial exudates on sorption-desorption interactions of 90Sr with brucite

One of the nuclear fuel storage ponds at Sellafield (United Kingdom) is open to the air, and has contained a significant inventory of corroded magnox fuel and sludge for several decades. As a result, some fission products have also been released into solution. 90Sr is known to constitute a small mass of the radionuclides present in the pond, but due to its solubility and activity, it is at risk of challenging effluent discharge limits. The sludge is predominantly composed of brucite (Mg(OH)2), and organic molecules are known to be present in the pond liquor with occasional algal blooms restricting visibility. Understanding the chemical interactions of these components is important to inform ongoing sludge retrievals and effluent management. Additionally, interactions of radionuclides with organics at high pH will be an important consideration for the evolution of cementitious backfilled disposal sites in the UK. Batch sorption-desorption experiments were performed with brucite, 90Sr and natural organic matter (NOM) (humic acid (HA) and Pseudanabaena catenata cyanobacterial growth supernatant) in both binary and ternary systems at high pH. Ionic strength, pH and order of addition of components were varied. 90Sr was shown not to interact strongly with the bulk brucite surface in binary systems under pH conditions relevant to the pond. HA in both binary and ternary systems demonstrated a strong affinity for the brucite surface. Ternary systems containing HA demonstrated enhanced sorption of 90Sr at pH 11.5 and vice versa, likely via formation of strontium-humate complexes regardless of the order of addition of components. The distribution coefficients show HA sorption to be reversible at all pH values studied, and it appeared to control 90Sr behaviour at pH 11.5. Ternary systems containing cyanobacterial supernatant demonstrated a difference in 90Sr behaviour when the culture had been subjected to irradiation in the first stages of its growth.

A New Methodology for Evaluating the Structural Similarity between Different Phases Using a Dimensionality Reduction Technique

A new methodology for definitively evaluating the structural similarity between different phases in an impartial manner is proposed. This methodology utilizes a dimensionality reduction (DR) technique that was developed in the fields of machine learning and statistics. The basis of the proposed methodology is that the structural similarity between different phases can be evaluated by the geometrical similarity of pair and/or angular distribution functions that reflect the atomic-scale structure of each phase. The DR technique is used for the analysis of this geometrical similarity. In this study, the proposed methodology is applied to evaluate the similarity in the atomic-scale structure, as obtained from molecular dynamics simulations, between amorphous CaCO₃ and CaCO₃ crystal phases in the presence or absence of additives, namely, Mg²⁺ ions, Sr²⁺ ions, and water molecules. The results indicate that in the absence of additives, the structure of the amorphous phase is closer to that of vaterite than to those of calcite or aragonite. However, the degree of structural similarity between the amorphous phase and vaterite decreases if Mg²⁺ ions are present. This tendency is also evident when Sr²⁺ ions are present, although these ions do not influence the structure of the amorphous phase as strongly as Mg²⁺ ions. In addition, the results indicate that at a high water concentration, the amorphous phase is separated into small particles by hydrogen-bonded networks of water molecules and the structure of the amorphous phase more closely approaches that of vaterite. The proposed methodology is widely applicable to the evaluation of the structural similarity between different phases for complex multicomponent systems.
